catamaran sailing courses uk

The beautiful South Coast of England is definitely the place to be in the summer and if you have ever thought of spending a weekend or a week on a luxury catamaran with your family or friends, we can make it happen in style. On a private charter, you get the boat to yourself with the skipper there to look after you, to advise on where to go, to show you the ropes and how a catamaran works – ideal as a familiarisation course for charter abroad. The price includes the yacht, the skipper, berthing at Gosport and free parking for a car.

Weymouth, Dorset

Sailing trips

We pioneered the idea of charter-a-berth, with organised weekend trips to exciting destinations at minimal cost to each guest. This year we have an exciting range of destinations. Book-a-berth sailing weekends are a fantastic way to get out on the water at a great price. Trips are suitable for novice and experienced sailors, each being led by a professional instructor. Sailing, sight-seeing, learning or just socialising – the choice is yours, but you are definitely part of the crew. This year, in addition to the weekend trips, there’ll also be long weekends and longer trips to more distant destinations.

Solent Sail is an RYA approved sea school and can therefore run courses at all levels – Competent Crew, Day Skipper, Yachtmaster Coastal and Yachtmaster Offshore. Training on a catamaran is a always a little different to a mono-hull, but your qualification is not restricted and our instructors will explain where the differences are important. Ultimately a catamaran provides more space and comfort for the trainees and we make sure that the equipment on board is of the highest standard. A training course with us is also great primer for chartering overseas. We can show you how to manoeuvre under engine, trim the sails, anchor with a bridle, pick up buoys and all the other skills that are key to safe and enjoyable sailing.

A yacht makes a great venue for some corporate team building, client entertainment or just a treat for a job well done. A catamaran enhances the experience for the guests and puts everyone together on one level, half inside and half outside. The itinerary is up to you, but as an example a day might comprise: 9:00 – join the boat in Gosport with a glass of champagne or juice and croissants or bacon rolls served by our stewardess. 9:30 – the skipper will provide a safety brief and a tour of the boat 10:00 – depart the dock, raise the sails and head out of the harbour 12:00 – stop on the Isle of Wight for lunch overlooking the sea 14:00 – return to the yacht for a virtual yacht race or treasure hunt 17:00 – arrive back at Gosport. Prizes for the winning teams 17:30 – depart the yacht.

About the Catamaran Certification Course — OSS 103/104/114

catamaran sailing vacations

“We had an amazing experience! We came away with way more knowledge and excitement to learn. Mike and I really only took this course because it was important to my brother-in-law who had a passion to learn and we wanted to spend time together. Neil took two beginners with only slight curiosity and made us extremely passionate to sail and continue the journey. We rented the 4600 catamaran right after our courses which will allow us to put all this great information to work.” Heather and Mike Nichols – Selana Beach, CA Read more testimonials here

Learning to Cruise is Fun and Rewarding on a Catamaran Sailing Vacation

Catamarans provide the ideal on-water classroom setting while enjoying a catamaran sailing vacation as you navigate from port to port. The huge airy salons on our catamarans, with 360 o visibility and lots of natural light, are a boon for pre-sail classroom sessions and after-sail relaxation. Each day you sail and navigate through the islands and along coastlines, putting to use all that you have learned. Preparation of meals is also an important part of this course. During your sailing catamaran charter, there is no professional chef. Your instructor will guide you in learning how to prepare meals aboard as all aboard take turns in the galley.

“Everything about my catamaran live aboard cruising course exceeded my expectations. Great sailing, the navigation and itinerary between islands were very well prepared, outstanding course content and sailing practice.” Vincent Schmitt – Hillsborough, NJ Read more testimonials here

The Catamaran Live Aboard Cruising Course Prepares You to Get the IPC for Chartering Overseas

If you plan to charter in Europe or other areas overseas, you may be required to show your certification credentials and an International Proficiency Certificate (IPC). The IPC is issued by US Sailing for a nominal fee, once you have obtained US Sailing Basic Keelboat, Basic Cruising, and Bareboat Cruising certifications. Offshore Sailing School also has a special IPC Prep with Barboat Cruising Certification and Cat Endorsement Course for those who already have big boat sailing experience. For more information, view details on US Sailing organization’s website here.

A Note About Night Sailing During a Live Aboard Cruising Course on Catamarans

Most charter agencies do not allow night sailing and require that you are anchored, docked or on a mooring before sunset. Night sailing is not covered in this course. For those planning to do long distance cruising, this is covered in Passage Making courses , the next step in your learning process. Take the first step and sign up for our learn to sail catamaran vacations below.

Blue Water Sailing School

Catamaran Sailing Courses - Blue Water Sailing School

A catamaran at anchor

Our Cruising Catamaran sailing course (Course A Plus Catamaran) is a weeklong live-aboard catamaran cruising course, offered at the Fort Lauderdale base and the U.S. Virgin Islands base. The sailing course combines the Basic Sailing (ASA 101), Basic Coastal Cruising (ASA103), Bareboat Chartering (ASA 104), and Cruising Catamaran (ASA 114) levels of the ASA curriculum.

We are also one of the only sailing schools to offer a course in advanced catamaran sailing (Course C+ Cat: Advanced Catamaran Skipper) . During this weeklong live-aboard catamaran cruising course you’ll sail from Fort Lauderdale, across the Gulf Stream to the Bahamas, and back again. Along the way, you’ll gain the hands-on experience you need to pass the Coastal Navigation (ASA 105), Advanced Coastal Cruising (ASA 106), and Cruising Catamaran (ASA 114) ASA certification levels.

Please see ASA Course Descriptions for details on each certification standard.

You can find information about all Blue Water Sailing School courses in our course catalog . For course availability and dates, please see our schedule .

Catamaran Sales

Catamaran Company - Catamaran Sales and Service

Well Suited , The Catamaran Company's new team concept in brokerage design, is made up of three Yacht Brokers, a Charter Broker, a Yacht Administrator and a Service Manager who all work together to insure that our Buyers, Sellers and Renters have the best possible experience. Our top priority is to insure that the catamaran you bring home with you is well suited for your lifestyle, not only for today but one that strategically fits into your long term goals.

The concept truly is cutting edge in that it focuses on the strength of the team, customer service and long term repeat business. We typically find that a yacht owner buys a new boat every three to five years. Well Suited takes the necessary time and devotes the human resources to assist in your long term plans. What you need/want today ... what you are looking to grow into or downsize after realizing a dream ... proper market placement ... resale value, etc.

We actually went somewhere (Key Largo), rather than returning to the dock each evening. The course was made to be an adventure, as well as simply instructional. The weather was “made to order” — sun and gentle breeze Saturday through Wednesday, then Force 8 for our ‘foul weather instruction’ on Thursday.

I thought it was an excellent, challenging course. It definitely wasn’t a “cruise.” The instructor expected a lot from the students. I like that.

I have nothing but the utmost praise for your entire operation and the quality of the instruction that I received. Al Hatch is a consummate instructor and brings to this activity a love and a passion that is genuine and expansive. I hope to be able to return to Blue Water to experience some of the higher-level courses of instruction, and I certainly would have no trouble at all recommending your company to anyone.

International Bareboat Skipper Sail - Catamaran

This is a 5 to 6 day course.  This course is not for beginners. This is a certificate of competency for those candidates who wish to train to command a catamaran sailboat up to 24 metres in length, in fair weather and in sight of land.

  • Candidates should be 16 years of age or over.
  • To have logged with proof of a total of 200 nautical miles and 10 days at sea by the end of course.
  • Must have taken IYT’s International Crew physical course with an IYT Partner School (candidates must either hold an IYT International Crew Certificate proving they have taken and passed the course, OR, a gold seal affixed to the IYT Boating & Sailing Passport signed by the school’s principal). Or they must hold an equivalent qualification from another training organisation
  • Hold an IYT VHF Radio Operators Certificate or equivalent from another training organisation. * Please note that we do not accept ISSA VHF qualifications. (I f you are unsure if your radio license will be accepted, please send a scanned copy of the front and back of your license to [email protected] .  We will verify that your license is sufficient to receive the IYT International Bareboat Skipper Catamaran license).

Note:  For IYT recreational certification, a “day at sea” is defined as 8 hours at sea, but not at anchor for prolonged periods of time. This certificate is the level of competence that one needs when chartering a boat in the Mediterranean or West Indies where there are restrictions in terms of cruising area and distance from the base.

IYT’s International Bareboat Skipper Sail – Catamaran Certificate covers command of a sailing vessel with a sail area of greater than 80 square metres/861 square feet. Please see the official statement here.

If a candidate already holds an IYT Flotilla or Bareboat Skipper Sail certificate, the modules for catamaran training should be a 1.5 to 2 day course. A review of the Flotilla or Bareboat Skipper course should be considered at the beginning of the course. Those who have obtained the International Bareboat Skipper Sail – Catamaran qualification, can automatically obtain the “International Certificate of Competency” (ICC), provided the student meets the requirements as laid down by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (Resolution 40).  Please click this link for more information.  Please note that the ICC Certificate will not state “catamaran”.

Certificate Limitations

  • Command of a vessel up to a maximum length of 78 ft /24 metres.
  • In coastal waters up to 20 miles offshore
  • Most charter agencies will insist on daylight hours as a condition to charter.

As you advance and become more proficient as crew or skipper you take on bigger challenges that require proper training to ensure the safety of your family and friends. The bigger the boat or length of adventure the more training you require.

Most of us prefer to spend our time on the water and not in a classroom. To facilitate this, IYT has a series of E-learning courses available for the theoretical part of sail and powerboat training.

  • Take one of our online (Elearning) courses for your next level of training.
  • Plan your practical training at one of our many schools worldwide to earn your final qualification.
  • Book in advance with your school as class sizes and availability may be limited.
  • Review the IYT course progression details to learn about professional level courses.
  • Spend time on the water and properly log your seatime.

The Boating Lifestyle is one of the most rewarding pursuits available. There is something physically and emotionally invigorating when you are offshore. To enjoy the experience fully you need the proper training & skills to be safe, prepared and command a vessel.

Recreational Student Information

IYT Yachting Passport

The IYT Passport is recognized in over 40 countries around the world and offers you an opportunity to study and train worldwide.

  • Spend seven days exploring the beautiful islands of Grenada and the Grenadines while you learn along the way.
  • Even better – extend your adventure! You'll cover the same material at a more relaxed pace with our ten-day Extended Cruise and Learn Catamaran Sailing School! This option is strongly recommended for this course due to a large amount of material to be covered.
  • This Catamaran ASA sailing course covers navigation, maneuvering under sail and power, anchoring, and learning to skipper a cruising catamaran.
  • All of our Cruising Catamaran Sailing School classes are taught aboard well-maintained catamarans in the 38- to 42-foot range.
  • We limit our Caribbean sailing class size to no more than four students to ensure plenty of time for individual instruction and hands-on sailing.
  • While sailing through the islands, your instructor will cover the curriculum for three levels of ASA certification: Basic Coastal Cruising (ASA 103), Bareboat Cruising (ASA 104), and Cruising Catamaran (ASA 114). ASA 101 Basic Keelboat Sailing is a prerequisite for this class. Ask about our two-day class to get certified and ready for a Catamaran Cruise and Learn!
  • Experience the local island flavor when we go ashore for at least three evening meals.
  • Extend your Caribbean sailing course to 10 days and take some extra time to enjoy the islands and learn at a slightly more steady pace.

Whatever your reasons for getting into sailing, it is not as difficult as you might imagine and there are a lot of different ways to get started. With so many destinations to choose and so many sailing experiences, it can be overwhelming to decide where to start.

If exploring fantastic bays, discovering remote islands, swimming and relaxing in the sun with a good book sounds like the kind of yacht cruising you are looking for then Cabin Charter will be the way to go.

If you would like to dip in and see but you are not sure if it’s for you our beach club has a dedicated Yacht where we offer several opportunities including two days Beginner Yachting (16h) while you stay in our Beach Club Hotel .

But you are here to find out how to become a Yacht Skipper, learn a new skill and take the first step towards becoming qualified, opening a whole new world of possibility for holidays and adventure travel. Even if you only ever do one course, you will have experienced the trip of a lifetime.

The RYA is a world-recognised organisation authorised by the UK maritime coastguard agency to issue international certificates of competence. Seafarer instructors are all experienced RYA instructors and can deliver a challenging syllabus to take you from no experience to a qualified licensed skipper through a series of RYA courses outlined below.

Our Training Centers – help you become a skipper

RYA Training In The Mediterranean

For our training yachts in Greece and Croatia, you have the opportunity to learn alongside a fantastic holiday experience. Naturally, it is a more intense experience than a Yacht Charter holiday. You will spend most of your days absorbing the syllabus, but there will also be opportunities to swim and explore the beautiful islands.

Learning alongside our flotilla, you will also have the chance to participate in group meals, our punch, and beach parties. Popular with experienced and newly qualified skippers alike or those seeking to improve their abilities with the support of our skilled lead crews. Filled with like-minded sailors, you will meet skippers who have already taken steps into the sailing world and discovered how accessible it is. It’s a tremendously positive and supportive environment to learn alongside.

RYA Training In The UK

Our UK school offers numerous bespoke courses for those wishing to brush up on any particular skills before flying to their next sailing holiday be it boat handling or just refreshers. Of course, we offer all the practical RYA courses including Competent Crew, Day Skipper & Coastal Skipper (for Day Skippers wishing to take there sailing further)

Based in Southampton, it offers fantastic sheltered waters sailing in the lea of the Isle Of Wight. It’s a great location to challenge your tidal knowledge and experience the lively sailing environment made famous for events like the Fastnet Race, the Round the Island Race and Cowes Week.

How to Become A Skipper

The Competent Crew course is perfect for somebody who has never been on a yacht before. It is the broadest course in the RYA syllabus covering virtually everything to do with sailing and living onboard a boat. You will have the opportunity to test your skills and will come away with a great sense of achievement and a good understanding of where to go next!

As an instructor for many years, I have discovered that even more experienced sailors can benefit from this course, there is always another level of detail to learn. If you haven’t sailed for a while or had any formal training, this course will not only be an excellent refresher, but you will be surprised how many new things you can learn. For more experienced sailors, this is a unique opportunity to polish the essential fundamentals of sailing.

Training in Croatia Training in Greece Training in the UK

Theoretically a skipper

With some sailing experience under your belt, you are ready to study the theory. Reading about navigation, sailing, and charts will seem much less daunting. You are now prepared to take the Day Skipper theory course. The Day Skipper Theory syllabus contains all essential theoretical knowledge required to become a skipper. It can be completed online at your own pace, We offer Navathome with all the needed resources sent to your home, and you can even use your repeat customer discount.

If you don’t feel ready

Not everybody is prepared for the Day Skipper course right away, we all learn at different rates and bridging the gap between the competent crew and Day Skipper courses is best achieved with Bespoke training, this can help you refine those skills that you think you lack. Commonly this is boat handling, we all know there is nothing more exhilarating than bringing a beautiful yacht alongside a concrete harbour wall! We offer bespoke training at all of our bases in Greece, Croatia, and the UK.

The courses in the Mediterranean are all one week. Our UK school offers much more flexibility for weekends or any other length or start days. Talk to one of our consultants to find out more.

General skills training works very well alongside the day skipper course. You will get to see others go through the course while you polish the fundamentals. Having feedback from an instructor while learning alongside the standard RYA courses can give you the confidence to grow without the pressure of a restricted syllabus. Talk to one of our consultants to find out where and how we can help you get to the next level.

The Sailing Licence

With your Day skipper theory ticket in hand and some recent sailing experience, You will be ready for the Day Skipper practical course. Taking everything you have learned in the first two courses, this turns you into a responsible skipper. You will learn to handle the boat, bringing it into port, directing your crew to ensure everyone is safe and comfortable.

Now you are qualified as a skipper

With your internationally recognised license in hand, you now have the opportunity to take your friends and family sailing on Yachts around the world. I am not surprised if this might feel incredibly daunting as this license can be achieved in as little as three weeks.

Flotilla can be a great option to help build your confidence. As well as being fantastically social flotilla offers you the opportunity to grow as a skipper with the security of having our lead crew on standby to assist or advise on any aspect of sailing. You can find more about our flotillas here .

A whole world of sailing

As soon as you feel ready, you will be free to charter yachts worldwide. As an internationally recognised skipper, you can benefit from bareboat prices and the freedom to travel at your own pace. Seafarer has a vast range of worldwide destinations. Click here to find out more.

If you are still not sure

Perhaps you are not sure where you fit into all of this. Why not talk to one of our team? We are a small yet experienced company in the world of sailing, and we would be happy to advise you on how best you can get started.

If you have always fantasized about chartering a sailing yacht or catamaran setting sail towards the open sea, and feeling the excitement and wind in your hair with you behind the steering wheel, contact us!

Sailing Europe offers sailing lessons for beginners, refreshment courses and advanced sailing courses for their clients. We will find a suitable program for you in any of the numerous destinations from our catalogue - from the always popular Mediterranean ( Croatia , Greece , Italy , etc.) to the Caribbean and the more exotic Seychelles and Thailand .

Sailing course with skipper instructor

Whether you already have a license but have not sailed in a while or are a total beginner with an immense will to learn how to sail – you have come to the right place. Refreshment courses are great if you have not sailed in a while and would like an expert near you to refresh your memory and even show you some new tips and tricks.

The usual sailing school course is held on sailing yachts. However, recently, there has been an increase in demand for catamaran sailing schools .  If you're interested in learning how to sail a catamaran and would like to try it out with the guidance of professionals before you charter one on your own, we are happy to find the best sailing course for you.

There are sailing schools that provide just a course (without obtaining a license after the end of the course) and there are courses at the end of which you can receive a sailing license. The usual license obtained is RYA . However, there are others you can obtain – such as ISPA , ASA , etc.

Keep in mind that you can choose individual sailing lessons or decide on a group class. If there are other students with you, then the expenses of sailing school are divided by the number of students.
