M/Y THIS IS IT – C-130

The new motor catamaran of the Tecnomar fleet, 43.5 meter in length and 14.5 meter in width, with approximately 750GT.

A groundbreaking project which sets a new benchmark in yacht design.

“The realisation of this extraordinary project challenges the “conventional” perceptions, driving us to completely recreate the boundaries of aesthetic parameters.“ – comments Giovanni Costantino, Founder and CEO of The Italian Sea Group. – “THIS IS IT is born as the perfect blend between the desires of a forward-thinking owner and a brand like Tecnomar, capable of taking on such an ambitious and demanding challenge. This Iconic yacht made its world premiere at Monaco Yacht Show 2023”

THIS IS IT represents an exciting new presence on the catamaran landscape.

The new Tecnomar Catamaran defines conventional thinking with its unique and innovative design. Tradition and innovation come together to create a concept of radical lifestyle and elegance. Defined by a layout with striking asymmetries and a bold, eye-catching silhouette enveloped by more than 600 square meters of impressive glass windows.

The inspiration is technological, clearly far from typical yachting design and definitely more close to civilian architecture.

The exterior lines, sinuous and soft, evoke fantastic sea creatures, challenging our perception of what is truly possible. This is a project that goes beyond the status quo, establishing a new benchmark for being an iconic project.

Hydrodynamic efficiency, reduction in fuel consumption and emissions

The hull lines are optimized to enhance hydrodynamic efficiency, leading to a significant reduction in fuel consumption and, therefore, emissions. In compliance with IMO Tier III requirements, the yacht is equipped with innovative exhaust gas treatment technology (SCR – Selective Catalytic Reduction) to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions.

Curved shape evoking a fantastic sea creatures THIS IS IT was a significant challenge for the TISG design team. Starting with weight control, a factor of utmost importance considering the extensive amount of glass used. The complex curved shape of the aluminium superstructure pushed the performance of this precious material to its limits. Where unconventional becomes a unique reality, there is only one: THIS IS IT. Setting new standards in radical design. Attention to architectural and design detail has resulted in a layout that is private and convivial in equal measure, providing ample space for hosting friends and family. Multiple decks with adaptable exteriors provide space for moments of privacy and reflection. A vertical garden on the sea The spacious owner’s area, in addition to a large skylight with an extraordinary height of 3.3 meter and a superb panoramic terrace, features a special vertical garden spanning two decks, giving the feeling of being in a seaside villa.Innovative design, speed and sportiness, characteristic elements of Tecnomar motor yachts, make “THIS IS IT” a unique and exceptional catamaran.

Inspired by supercar automotive design, an aerodynamic profile is complemented with fluid and organic interior lines to create spaces that are as invigorating as they are relaxing. Leather and Alcantara, oak and teak, dialogue with the sinuous shapes, marked by bold geometric cuts and grey marble inserts. The dominant mood is dynamic, in motion, enveloping and sporty, yet the colour palette is also elegant and refined, in which light tones of beige and platinum grey prevail. The precious accent is provided by the combined use of noble metals such as gold, bronze, titanium and carbon in contrast to the calmness of the natural wood tones and leather finishes.

The Italian Sea Group have announced the launch of their brand-new catamaran THIS IS IT under the Tecnomar brand. This unique and exceptional 43.5 m (142’7″) superyacht will make her debut at the Monaco Yacht Show later this month and is characterised by her unique and bold silhouette.

The exterior is sinuous and soft and features 600sqm of glass, challenging the perception of what is possible using conventional construction processes. This amount of glass needed careful weight management and the complex profile pushed the limits the aluminium’s capabilities.  Ultimately the optimised shape enhances the hydrodynamic efficiency, leading to a significant reduction in fuel consumption and, therefore, emissions.

The interior mirrors the futuristic exterior and presents with a unique galley featuring polarised glass enabling a subtle connection with the guest areas. Using sophisticated materials including leather and Alcantara, oak and teak plus grey marble with bronze, titanium and carbon creates a stunning and elegant contrast throughout the spaces.

Accommodation is across six suites with The spacious owner’s stateroom featuring a skylight with an 3.3m skylight, superb panoramic terrace and a unique vertical garden spanning two deck and giving the feeling of being in a seaside villa.

Founder and CEO of The Italian Sea Group Giovanni Costantino had this to say at the launch, “The realisation of this extraordinary project challenges the ‘conventional’ perceptions, driving us to completely recreate the boundaries of aesthetic parameters.” He explained, “The yacht is born as the perfect blend between the desires of a forward-thinking owner and a brand like Tecnomar, capable of taking on such an ambitious and demanding challenge. We will present this iconic yacht for the world premiere at the Monaco Yacht Show.”

Tecnomar is recognised as one of the most innovative yacht builders in the world backed by it’s Italian heritage and excellence. Each model aims to balance the elegance of the best Italian nautical tradition and the use of technologies and highly innovative materials.

Futuristic catamaran THIS IS IT enters charter market following Monaco debut

By Anna Ingles   14 November 2023

Tecnomar's 43.58m(143ft) iconic catamaran charter THIS IS IT stands as a beacon of modern yacht design. In September, the Monaco Yacht Show buzzed with excitement over this silver-hulled vision, with expansive, full-height glass windows boasting nearly 6,500 square feet and an asymmetrical, sinuous interior taking cues from oceanic fauna and high-end automobiles. THIS IS IT is without a doubt this year's most captivating and conversation-provoking launch.

Whether it enraptures or divides opinion, catamaran THIS IS IT sets itself apart as a singular marvel of the seas. Its silhouette features a dramatic arch cradling a transparent facade with a private owner's balcony on the upper deck. The stern grants access to a spacious, asymmetric aft deck, a highlight of uninterrupted space, complemented by views of the central pool and sunbathing areas that stretch across the yacht's substantial 14.6m (48ft) beam.

Aft rendering of charter yacht THIS IS IT

More akin to a sovereign isle than a mere catamaran charter, THIS IS IT boasts a hull finely tuned for hydrodynamic efficiency, offering fuel conservation without compromise. According to Signe Putna, marketing expert at The Italian Sea Group, Tasos Papanastasiou, a self-made entrepreneur from Cyprus, was instantly smitten upon seeing the designs and it was a moment of revelation that christened the luxury charter yacht and set the course for Papanastasiou's dream creation.

The aft deck melds with the interior lounge, forming an open environment that can be shielded from the elements with large doors. The main salon sets the stage for social engagement, with a crystal chandelier and a curved cocktail bar as centerpieces. Varied social spaces are delineated by form rather than walls, with a starboard lounge offering a cinematic experience and a formal dining space accommodating 12 guests, making THIS IS IT an ideal choice for both family gatherings and corporate yacht charters .

The interior design, crafted by Mattia Piro and Gian Marco Campanino of the Italian Sea Group, truly stands out with its glass features, including floor-to-ceiling windows and thoughtfully positioned skylights. Despite the openness, the interior maintains a cozy, intimate ambiance, thanks to clever backlighting and LED accents in key areas.

The yacht's upper deck reveals a spa complete with a treatment area, sauna, and sensory shower, neighboring a convertible children's playroom. The interior is adorned with leather, Alcantara suede, oak, marble, and silk wall panels, under metallic-painted ceilings. The design language intertwines fluid shapes with bold geometric lines, truly an understated symphony of style.

The master suite is a sanctuary of light, crowned with an 11-foot skylight above a centrally placed king-sized bed, offering sea views and a private balcony. A vertical garden enhances the coastal villa atmosphere, while the master bathroom and galley boast space-age designs, the latter ready for culinary showcases.

Accommodations include five additional guest cabins with en suites, allowing for 12 guests, alongside quarters for a crew of 12 and conveniently located day heads on each level.

Mousetrap Catamaran

After completing a decade-long world voyage, Mousetrap underwent an extensive, multi-year refit from 2021 to 2023. The owner’s directive was to spare no expense to restore her to as-new condition, with a knowledgeable crew and a significant capital investment helping with the makeover. The revamp included new machinery, new sails, servicing of mast and rigging, new teak decks, fresh paint, and overall refinishing.

“With outstanding sailing performance, impressive dimensions, and ‘as new’ condition, Mousetrap stands out as the finest large sailing catamaran available today,” Fraser says.

Mousetrap has a large, open-plan layout that will appeal to modern seafarers, too. With an innovative carbon-fiber arch supporting the mast, the main salon is free of posts and bulkheads that might otherwise interrupt flow. She also has a wide 46-foot beam that results in a light, airy interior with 180-degree ocean views.

The aft deck spans the entire beam, creating a huge alfresco dining and lounging space. A large sliding door leads to the main salon, enabling seamless indoor and outdoor living. The main salon is divided into four sections that can be used for relaxation, dining, working, and more. The space features an elegant desk, a large central bar, a giant wraparound sofa, and a formal dining table for fancy dinner parties. The salon extends to the foredeck where guests will find a custom six-person Jacuzzi, a plush lounge, and a concealed ladder for easy water access.

  • Guide to Russia

What is the history of Gorky Park?

  • In the pre-revolutionary period, Gorky Park was a city dump and wasteland, which was cleared in 1923 to host the All-Russian Agricultural and Artisan Industrial Exhibition
  • In 1928, a huge park was planned on the former site of the exhibition. It would not just be a place of leisure, but a place to proudly display Soviet culture and daily life
  • Gorky Park has remained a cultural hub ever since, and has been renovated and added to over the years to make it one of Moscow’s top attractions today

Gorky Central Park of Culture and Recreation

Gorky Park is the most famous park of Moscow, created during the Soviet period as a hub for relaxation and cultural activities. The park is beloved by Muscovites and tourists alike, who visit in all seasons to stroll, enjoy sports, admire the park’s attractions, and attend cultural events. Gorky Park is the central part of an ensemble of four green spaces – Muzeon Park of Arts, Neskuchny Garden, and Sparrow Hills Nature Reserve – which curve around the southern bank of the Moskva River to the south-west of Moscow city centre. Here you may spend some time and enjoy nature and contemprary art during your vacation in Moscow .

History of Gorky Park

Imperial russia.

In the 17th century, the eastern bank of the Moskva River beyond Moscow’s city limits was home to floodplain meadows, where palace horses grazed. From the mid-1850s, events such as cockfights, fistfights, and races were held here, and by the 20th century this area had become a city dump where the unemployed and homeless people of Moscow lived, which remained this way until the Soviet period. This wasteland lay in stark contrast to the adjoining Neskuchny Sad – ‘merry garden’ – which lay to its south, an area of aristocratic country estates and elaborate gardens.

Following the October Revolution, Vladimir Lenin travelled around Moscow to find a suitable site for the first All-Russian Agricultural and Artisan Industrial Exhibition, which would reveal opportunities for socialist development of agriculture and industry. Lenin decided on the wasteland alongside the Moskva River, which was cleared with a programme of community work. In 1923, the exhibition began. It encompassed 250 pavilions dedicated to different themes of agriculture and industry, and was divided into thematic zones, such as villages, livestock, crops, engineering, railways, republics of the USSR, and foreign countries. The organisation of the exhibition demarcated the future layout and size of Gorky Park, and the paths, ‘zones’, and main square of the exhibition have been preserved until the present day. In March 1928, Moscow City Council decided to establish a park of culture and recreation on the site of the former exhibition, which would also encompass the Neskuchny Garden. Moscow’s residents were instrumental in the construction of the park – they voiced their desires for events spaces, physical education and leisure facilities, and gave up their weekends to build the park. The park’s main architect was Konstantin Melnikov.

Did you know? Konstantin Melnikov also helped to construct Lenin’s Mausoleum and the Rusakov Worker’s Club, one of Moscow’s Constructivist masterpieces .

Over 100,000 Muscovites flocked to the opening of the park on 12th August 1928. The brand-new park was equipped with two theatres, a cinema, nursery, reading room, restaurant and café, music stages, sports arenas, rowing boats, and even a giant helter-skelter slide. Unfortunately, because of the vast size of the crowd and the general excitement, the park was damaged and closed until September.

Did you know? The park was not named after Maxim Gorky, writer and founder of Socialist Realism, until 1933.

In 1929, Betty Glan – at the mere age of 26 – became director of the park. She decided to reconceptualise it, uniting leisure, design, and ideology with the help of Moscow’s most eminent architects, designers and artists. Over the next decade, more cultural venues were established in the park, the Pushkinskaya Embankment along the Moskva River was developed, and the landscaping of the park was carefully cultivated. Architect Alexander Vlasov was particularly influential, and won the Grand Prix at the 1937 World Exhibition in Paris for his design of Gorky Park. This period under Glan’s directorship until 1937 was known as the ‘golden age’ of Gorky Park, which became not just a place for recreation, but a public space where Soviet culture and everyday life could be proudly displayed.

Did you know? During the Second World War topical events were held in Gorky Park, such as the championship in bayonet combat, grenade-throwing competitions, and air defence training. What’s more, an exhibition of captured enemy weapons – tanks, artillery, aeroplanes, and more – was organised in Gorky Park and continually updated throughout the war.

In the post-war decades new attractions were continually added to Gorky Park. These included the majestic 24-metre triumphal arch at the entrance to the park, an astronomical observatory (which remains open today), the famous Ferris wheel (unfortunately dismantled in 2008), and a fountain with lights and music.

The Gorky Park ensemble continued to flourish as a centre of culture and recreation in post-Soviet Russia. The adjoining Muzeon Park of Arts was founded in 1992, and Garage Museum of Contemporary Art was established in Gorky Park in 2008. The ensemble underwent serious reconstruction in 2011. Many new sports facilities were added, including centres for beach sports and extreme sports, bicycle paths and sports equipment rental hubs, and much effort was devoted to reviving original buildings, sculptures, and landscape compositions. Two years later, the embankment of the Moskva River from the southern tip of Zamoskvorechye Island all the way to Sparrow Hills was redeveloped and pedestrianised, making it possible to peacefully walk or cycle along the Moskva for many kilometres.

What can you do at Gorky Park today?

  • Explore the park and see architectural attractions, fountains, and beautiful gardens
  • Visit Garage Museum of Contemporary Art and the Gorky Park Museum
  • Go boating on the lakes and stroll down the Pushkinskaya Embankment
  • Rent bicycles or scooters, skateboard, and visit the sports centres

What can you do at Gorky Park?

Park attractions.

While exploring the treelined paths of Gorky Park, you’ll come across a number of attractions. To the west of the main entrance, near the river, is a beautiful geometric bandstand used for music and literary evenings in the Soviet period. As you head down the central alley of Gorky Park from the main entrance, you’ll see a statue of Maxim Gorky on your right, and discover the light and music fountain with its dancing jets of water – find the schedule of its performances here .

Did you know? Don’t be afraid to feed the red squirrels and birds you encounter on your walk around Gorky Park – there are even vending machines which sell special food for the animals!

The southern section of Gorky Park is occupied by the Golitsynsky Garden. In 1802, the Golitsyn Hospital was founded here as a hospital for the poor; it still adjoins Gorky Park today. Gardens were created as a relaxation place for patients, extending from the hospital building to the riverbank, and included landscaped gardens, a Chinese Bridge, and two ponds. On the riverbank is the Rotunda of the Golitsyn Hospital, which has been preserved since the 19th century. There is also a rose garden and fountain by the Bolshoi Golitsynsky Pond.

Did you know? In the Golitsynsky Garden is also located an unusual architectural monument – a public toilet designed by Alexander Vlasov in the 1930s, which is recognised as an ‘object of cultural heritage’!

Outdoor activities

Gorky Central Park of Culture and Recreation

Gorky Park’s extensive and varied grounds aren’t only good for walks! You can relax on the water by renting boats to sail on the Pionersky and Bolshoi Golitsynsky Ponds, or visiting the Olivkovy Beach on the Pushkinskaya Embankment to sunbathe. As well as this, you can hire bicycles, electric scooters, longboards or even roller skates to explore the park and embankments, play table tennis, visit the sports complex to play football, basketball, handball, badminton or volleyball, or visit the Vans skatepark or Nike sports centre for workouts and classes such as rooftop yoga.

Gorky Park Museum

Visit the Gorky Park Museum, located in the left pier of the entrance arch. The current exhibition is dedicated to Gorky Park in the ‘golden age’ of the 1930s, and shows the development of Moscow’s central park through the eyes of Betty Glan. There is an observation deck on top of the arch, which offers a lovely view over the park and Moscow’s skyline.

Did you know? In the entrance arch there is also a gift shop where you can purchase balls, frisbees, blankets, and other items to enjoy your visit to Gorky Park.

Garage Museum of Contemporary Art

Garage Museum

Photo from  https://muzeolog.com/

In Gorky Park you will find Garage Museum, Russia’s first philanthropic institution dedicated to contemporary art, founded in 2008 by Roman Abramovich and Dasha Zhukova. 10 major exhibitions are hosted each year to showcase the work of established and up-and-coming artists. Also organised are a rich programme of events including curator-led excursions, workshops, masterclasses, lectures, concerts, performances, festivals, and film screenings at Garage’s outdoor cinema. Food and drink

There are plenty of excellent cafes and restaurants dotted around Gorky Park, where you can stop for a quick coffee or enjoy a long meal with a view. They include the stylish lakeside café Ostrovok (Little Island) and upmarket restaurant Vremena Goda (Seasons) which serve European and Russian food, colourful lakeside Thai restaurant Lebedinoe Ozero (Swan Lake), trattoria Merkato with its huge summer terrace, restaurant Syrovarnya (Cheese Factory) with a menu focused on its homemade cheese, food-truck court Restoparking which is stylised as a drive-in café, and ice-cream and tea shop Chaynaya Vysota.

What’s nearby?

Gorky Park is bordered by Muzeon Park of Arts, Neskuchny Garden, and Sparrow Hills Nature Reserve. This huge ensemble curves for eight kilometres along the bank of the Moskva River, providing a beautiful oasis of green in Europe’s biggest city.

Muzeon Park of Arts

Muzeon Park

Photo from  https://new-magazine.ru/

Muzeon Park of Arts is the largest open-air sculpture museum in Russia, home to 1,000 sculptures by Soviet and Russian sculptors, including those by famous artists. A large part of Muzeon is occupied by the New Tretyakov Gallery , which houses Russia’s most complete exhibition of national art from the 20th century to the present day. The pedestrianised Krymskaya Embankment which extends alongside Muzeon has recently undergone redevelopment, and is one of Moscow’s most popular spots to relax.

Neskuchny Garden

Neskuchny Garden is the oldest park in Moscow, founded in 1728 by Prince Nikita Trubetskoy, who threw fantastic festivities in his manor house and gardens – neskuchny means ‘merry’ in Russian. Many other noble families also built their country estates in this area, which became a public park and garden after being acquired by the royal family. Today, the Neskuchny Garden is home to historical buildings, fountains, and gardens from the 18th and 19th centuries, sports facilities, an open-air theatre, and a huge greenhouse which supplies flowers to Gorky Park.

Sparrow Hills

Sparrow Hills Nature Reserve is a huge forest park lining the steep bank of the Moskva River and the only specially protected nature area near the city centre. It is home to ecological trails, ponds, natural springs, rare species of plants and animals, many spots for picnicking, cafes, and a mini zoo. At the bottom of the park lie the Vorobyovskaya and Andreevskaya Embankments, with promenades along the Moskva River, a beach, and piers offering boat trips. As with Gorky Park, Sparrow Hills is hugely popular for sports and outdoor activities in all seasons. A new winter sports complex with snowboarding, ice skating, and ski tracks and jumps is currently under construction. When the weather is pleasant, you can rent a bicycle to ride the 8 kilometres along the river from Muzeon to Sparrow Hills.

Three people rescued after catamaran runs aground off Windy Harbour, WA

Three men have been rescued from their damaged boat near Windy Harbour.

Authorities responded after the men set off a distress beacon just after 7am on Monday.

What's next?

The men were examined by paramedics before their rescue and reportedly escaped life-threatening injuries.

A crew has been winched to safety after a catamaran struck rocks in treacherous waters more than 20 kilometres off Western Australia's rugged south coast.

Three men were airlifted from the 11-metre vessel on Monday after it ran aground near the remote Cow and Calf Rocks about 25km south-east of Windy Harbour and 150km west of Albany.

A split image showing the damaged hull of a catamaran and the same vessel being towed by another boat.

The crew set off a distress beacon at 7am and the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) launched its Challenger jet in response.

WA's Department of Fire and Emergency Services rescue helicopter was also dispatched from Bunbury.

Swell in the area neared three metres and there were wind gusts of up to 60 kilometres per hour this morning.

Photos taken by marine rescue crew show damage to the starboard hull of the sailing catamaran.

An AMSA spokesperson said a paramedic was lowered onto the boat to check the crew before all three were winched to safety.

Windy Harbour Marine Rescue towed the vessel to shore.

Man thrown out boat's window

Crew commander Fabio Renzullo said they were not expecting the callout.

"[It was] pitch black and we headed out and got the guys — we didn't know what to expect," he said.

"They managed to stay on the catamaran, and they were very lucky the rescue chopper got there.

"A lot of the crew did struggle with those conditions — they were very happy to get home."

He said the men suffered a significant impact, with one sustaining a significant gouge to his head.

"One of them was asleep and another was thrown out the window," he said.

"Very unlucky for the guys, but [they were] lucky to come home tonight."

A catamaran is pulled across the ocean by a rescue boat.

The AMSA spokesperson said the crew were well prepared and had several emergency beacons on board.

"Given the remoteness of the incident, the crew of the catamaran demonstrated exceptional preparedness, carrying three different distress beacons, all of which contributed to their successful rescue," they said.

Mr Renzullo agreed, saying the early alert was a critical factor in the successful rescue.

The coastline is the roughest in the state and winter swells occasionally peak at 10m.

Burling skippers Kiwis to New York regatta win and clinches spot in SailGP’s $2M Grand Final

Peter Burling and the New Zealand Black Foils sailed a flawless podium race on the Hudson River on Sunday to win the Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix and clinch a spot in SailGP’s $2 million, winner-take-all Grand Final in San Francisco next month.

Burling and his mates took the inside position at the start and kept their 50-foot foiling catamaran ahead of Phil Robertson of Canada and Giles Scott of Britain to win for the fifth time in 12 regattas. They still need to get through the San Francisco regatta in one piece on July 13 and 14 but will have a spot on the starting line of the three-boat Grand Final for the second straight year.

Three-time defending SailGP champion Tom Slingsby and Team Australia missed the podium race for the second straight regatta but leap-frogged Spain into second place in the season standings. The Aussies went 9-1 in Sunday’s two fleet races and finished fourth overall.

The Kiwis have exerted dominance despite a stunning setback in the season’s third regatta, when their wingsail suddenly shattered and fell into the Mediterranean minutes after they had completed the first day of racing in Saint-Tropez. They were forced to the docks for the rest of that regatta and the next regatta.

Image

It’s not surprising the Kiwis have bounced back, considering their deep experience. Burling and wing trimmer Blair Tuke won three Olympic medals together, including one gold, and are the core of two-time defending America’s Cup champion Emirates Team New Zealand.

“I knew we had a long road ahead of us to be top of the leaderboard going into the Grand Final, missing an event, not only the points side of things but just the lack of training time, which this group has had less training time than anyone else in the whole league this season,” Burling said.

“It’s been a tough season but to just charge through that and get these wins on the board is something we’re super proud of,” he said before the crew members sprayed each other with Champagne.

The Kiwis lead the trans-Tasman Sea rival Aussies 93-78 on the season leaderboard, while Spain’s Diego Botin is third with 76 points. France is five points out of podium position, Canada and ROCKWOOL Denmark are another four points back, and the British are 10 points back.

Nothing is given in SailGP, where penalty points, a collision or a capsize can drastically affect a team’s fate.

Slingsby, an Olympic gold medalist and former America’s Cup champion, beat Burlng and Britain’s Sir Ben Ainslie in the Season 3 Grand Final in tech baron Larry Ellison’s global league. The prize money has doubled to $2 million this season for the winning crew.

Robertson had a perfectly timed start Sunday but the Canadians briefly buried one bow into the water. Burling had the inside position and forced Canada and Britain high and wide approaching the first mark to gain control.

“Awesome to get another win on the board. Really tricky conditions, really snakes and ladders, but to get three solid starts today, put together three solid races and end up winning it,” Burling said. “I’m pretty proud of the team.”

Bernie Wilson has covered sailing for the AP since 1991.
