Prepaid and calculated as a percent of the base charter fee.

Factors Impacting Cost

Type and size of yacht that you can rent for a week.

The cost of renting a yacht week-long largely depends on the type and size of the yacht. Motor yachts, sailboats, catamarans, and super yachts with different price tags. Larger yachts with more onboard amenities will generally cost more.

Season and Location

The time of year and the location also significantly impact the cost. High season, typically during summer months in the Mediterranean or winter in the Caribbean , will have higher rates. Off-season charters can be more affordable.

Sample Price Ranges when you rent a yacht for a week

Here are some example price ranges:

  • 40-50 ft Catamaran : $15,000 – $25,000 per week
  • 50-60 ft Motor Yacht : $25,000 – $50,000 per week
  • 60-80 ft Motor Yacht : $50,000 – $100,000 per week

Additional Costs

Fuel, food, and beverages.

For non-inclusive charters, additional costs include fuel, which varies based on distance traveled, and food and beverages. Provisioning can be customized to your preferences, but it’s an extra expense to consider.

Tipping the crew or your yacht charter guide is customary and usually amounts to 10-20% of the charter fee, depending on the level of service provided.

Docking Fees

Docking fees vary by location and can accumulate, particularly in popular ports and marinas. These fees are not typically included in the base charter rate.

Understanding these costs helps you plan a realistic budget for your yacht charter boat vacation. By being aware of the various factors and potential additional expenses, you can make informed decisions and enjoy a seamless and luxurious yachting experience.

Rent a Yacht for a Weekend | Complete Guide | Nautical Trips

How to rent a yacht for a weekend.

Rent a yacht for a weekend can be a great way to make your next vacation extra special, giving you a taste of luxury on the water. Yachts are available in many places around the world, so wherever you decide to spend your weekend, there is likely to be an option available to rent a yacht for a weekend near you.

Most rental companies cover most major yachting areas in Europe and America. If you see something that looks like it might fit what you need for this weekend’s escapades, don’t hang about – get in touch with them today!

rent a yacht for a weekend

Here are some useful tips:

Some providers will only allow their rental yachts to be used between certain times or days of the week. When it comes to the extras, such as parking and gas, be sure to check what is included in the price of renting a yacht for a weekend before you sign up. The last thing you want is a nasty surprise when you arrive with your friends or family!

Sure it’s easy enough to go online and find a great deal on a rental yacht for a weekend in a fantastic location, but if they do not allow pets at all, then that could be a huge drawback for some vacationers. It would only take one party animal refusing to leave their furry friend behind when everyone else wants to spend time together for this option to be off the table.

In order to avoid any disappointment during planning for your next getaway, make sure that there are no hidden pet fees attached to any yacht you are thinking of renting.

When is the best time to rent a yacht for a weekend?

rent a yacht

The most popular times for people to rent a yacht for a weekend are in the spring and summer months when days are longer and there’s more chance of getting away for a week without having to deal with bad weather. If you’re planning on going somewhere exotic though, then why not always go during the off-season!

This will allow you to take full advantage of being able to see animals that aren’t visible during busy times – plus, you’ll have far less company around your chosen resort! If this sounds like your kind of thing, then be sure to look online at rental yacht companies as soon as possible so that you can get a head start on planning.

How Much Does It Cost to Charter a Yacht For a Weekend?

On average, a yacht rental costs between $15,000 and $35,000 per week. Yachts less than 80 feet in length fall into this price range. If you’re looking for a bigger yacht, from 80 to 120 feet, you can expect to pay between $35,000 and $80,000 per week. Catamarans are even more expensive to rent, with a week in a catamaran longer than 80 feet costing between $40,000 and $100,000. The cost of your charter also depends on whether you want a crewed charter or a bareboat charter.

Consider Rental Yacht Insurance For Your Trip

rent a yacht for a day

One of the risks, when you rent a yacht for a weekend, is that it will be damaged during your rental period. It can happen, especially if you take novice sailors out on it and they don’t know what they’re doing! Luckily, many yacht rentals come with some type of standard insurance included already – this usually covers small scratches and damage to internal fittings and fixtures.

If you want to avoid any possibility of having to pay for damages to the exterior then consider buying extra insurance just in case. There are many Luxury Yacht Charters companies, who offer cover for things like emergency assistance, medical care, and theft from their yachts – so it might be worth knowing about them before you go.

How do you ensure the rental yacht is in good condition?

luxury yacht rental

The last thing you want on your vacation is to be stuck on a rental yacht for a weekend with broken toilets or furniture – this can ruin what would otherwise be a fantastic getaway! One of the main ways of ensuring your rental yacht will be in top working order is by being sure that whoever owns it has had it checked out thoroughly, perhaps even within the past month or two.

This way, there’s less chance that something will break down while you’re using it. You should also ask for proof of insurance so that if anything does happen, it will be covered under their policy rather than being your problem!

Amenities included are another important factor when considering how to rent a yacht for a weekend:

What kind of rental yacht amenities will you have access to?

rent a private yacht

Amenities vary from one rental yacht company to the next, and even between different yachts. Ask what kind of equipment is included in your yacht’s rental price – such as whether or not you’ll have access to satellite TV, WiFi, and other luxuries like toilets with running water. Clean towels should also be provided as well as clean sheets (if sleeping on the yacht).

If you’re keen on cooking up meals at sea then ask whether or not there are any kitchen appliances provided; this could save you extra money if you only plan on packing things like bread and sandwich fillings! It might also be checking how often staff will come onto the yacht to clean it up for you – this way, you can rest assured that you won’t be left with a dirty yacht at the end of your trip.

What is included in renting a yacht for a weekend budget?

yacht charter rental

The price of renting a yacht for a weekend will vary wildly depending on what kind of location, model, and length of time you are planning to rent it out for. This means that no two prices will ever be quite the same; however, there are some general trends that might dictate something like whether or not insurance is included in the fee.

For example, if you’re going with a company such as Bezop then prepare yourself for a slightly higher price due to their more luxurious models being available – but this also means that they have fewer restrictions attached to them which can allow you to have your perfect getaway!

Once you’ve looked into all of the above, then it should be much easier for you to decide how to rent a yacht for a weekend. Plus, when in doubt remember that there is almost always someone online at Bezop who will be happy to answer any questions or concerns that you might have about renting their yachts!

What are the most popular brands for a yacht charter?

Nautal´s boat owners offer a range of different yacht brands and models to rent. The three well-known yacht brands Nautal offers are Jeanneau, Beneteau, and Bavaria. Moreover, other brands include Silverton, Mangusta, Pershing, Baglietto, and more!

It is important to note however that most yachts are chosen for their quality and high spec conditions which make them so unique.

What should I consider when chartering a yacht?

You should first consider how long you want to charter a yacht for, the size, and what activities you and your group may enjoy doing. When renting a boat of this type, the size of the yacht is very important since this will determine how long the yacht charter can be. Most 25-meter (82 ft) yachts are chartered on a weekly basis. Shorter private charters are only available in last-minute bookings, or for smaller yachts that do offer daily charter rates. You can also charter yachts with a captain and crew, who take care of every detail to make your holiday an unforgettable experience. Crewed charter yachts allow you and your family or friends to fully enjoy and relax with your dream boat vacation. Check with the owner if the captain and crew are included in the yacht charter prices!

How much does a yacht rental cost?

Yacht rental prices vary depending on your luxury yacht charter choice. Features that make the price vary are the season, size of the yacht, manufacturer, and more! A yacht charter in the low season can cost anywhere from $1,500 a day and $10,000 per week. In high season yacht rental costs from $1,800 per day and $12,487 per week. The price will increase the more luxurious and extravagant you choose your yacht rental to be. For example, megayachts over 165 ft can cost $500,000 or more per week. A yacht charter cost can also have additional and inclusive rates. Depending on the owner´s boat rental offer, the skipper and crew can be included or be an additional cost. Just imagine your luxury yacht charter with delicious food and drinks for your whole family to enjoy. Each charter experience is different so speak to the owner of the boat for more information on what is included in the price and what type of yacht you are looking for.

Where to rent a yacht?

Nautal charters yachts all around the world with many options available on the Amalfi Coast, Mykonos , Costa Azul, Porto Cervo, and beautiful Ibiza . You can also charter a yacht in the Caribbean, Croatia , or Greece . You can spend your vacation on a yacht, celebrate your birthday, organize a party, and more! Check out our different yacht charter destinations!

What does a yacht charter rate include and what additional fees can I expect to pay?

For one-week megayacht charters, the price is usually given without Taxes. Taxes range significantly by destination and will vary if more than one country is visited. You will also need to pay for an estimated running of expenses paid by an Advance Provisioning Allowance, or APA. Expenses include fuel (the largest cost in yacht rentals), food and beverages, port fees, etc. APA typically accounts for between 25% and 35% of the charter price, and with it, the captain will pay all holiday expenses. Whatever is not used will be returned to the customer after the charter. Finally, you will need to consider the tip for the crew, which is a percentage of the rental price, approximately 10% in Europe and 15% in the US. This is highly recommended since a professional and trained crew has a direct impact on the success of the holidays.

Do I need a license to charter a yacht?

If you want to be the one who sails the yacht, you will need the Yachtmaster Ocean license or the equivalent, depending on the country. However, if you want to sail in luxury and comfort you can charter the yacht with a captain and crew. On the Nautal platform, yachts over 50 ft are chartered with a captain, except for some yacht charters located in Croatia. This is because the yachts are very expensive and the risk of damage for the owner is very high. Also during the high season, the yacht owners often cannot get them repaired easily without an advanced booking.

How much does it cost to charter a yacht?

There are many things to consider and first time charterers can be left confused, that's why we've created a comprehensive guide to yacht charter prices (with a checklist).

charter cost explained banner

The good news: It’s easy to grasp the basics of yacht charter pricing. And with one of our experts in your corner, we can help you more accurately estimate the cost of your next once-in-a-lifetime vacation.

The cost of a yacht charter is dependent on a number of factors, including the type of yacht, the charter destination, local taxes, and the base cost. (If the yacht has a celebrity owner, well that too, can add to the cost.)

Therefore, yacht charters have a wide range of base prices. That’s why charters can cost from $10,000 per week on smaller sailing yachts and catamarans, up to $150,000+ per week on the most luxurious motor superyachts.

What else can you expect to pay? This overview – a part of our planning resource, the Charter Advice Guide – offers an in-depth look at charter yacht costs.

Yacht Charter Price Structure: “All-Inclusive” vs “Plus Expenses”

In the world of yachting, two types of crewed yacht charters are available to you – “All-Inclusive” and “Plus Expenses” charter experiences. What do these terms mean exactly? Here’s a quick look:

  • All-Inclusive Yacht Charters – Some charters (mainly catamaran and monohull charters in the Virgin Islands) offer all-inclusive rates. That means rates are based on the number of guests, and they include all food and drink, water sports, and fuel costs. Dockage and taxes, though, are usually charged separately.
  • Plus Expenses Charters – Rates for larger motor yachts do not include running expenses, which must be paid separately. For these luxury charters, the base price is for the yacht only. Additional expenses, i.e. food, bar, fuel, dockage, port taxes, and other expenses, are charged separately. Most frequently, the running expenses are paid by an Advance Provisioning Allowance, or APA, which is typically 35% of the base price; this is an amount that’s paid prior to the charter.

Our chart below offers a quick overview of what’s included in both of these types of charters.

Factors that Affect Yacht Charter Prices

Since charter yachts are privately owned, prices are set by the owner. This can explain, in part, the wide range of differences in price between boats of similar lengths. Yet, several other factors can significantly impact price, including:

  • The Yacht – The year the boat was built, the builder, previous owners, and the boat’s selection of water toys can also increase the cost of a yacht. Boats can also develop a reputation, i.e. the largest or most luxurious, or having a famous builder or previous owner. Reputation can also affect pricing.
  • Season – Prices typically increase in the high season – i.e. high summer in the Mediterranean or winter in the Caribbean – and decrease in low seasons.
  • Destination – Your charter destination also plays a role in charter cost. For example, prices increase in areas without large charter fleets (i.e. the Galapagos), whereas Bahamas yacht charters,   BVI charters , or Mediterranean yacht charter are priced more competitively.

Additional Costs Considerations on Yacht Charter

In addition to the cost associated with running the yacht and provisioning, there are a number of other costs that must be considered. These are the most significant:

Advanced Provisioning Allowance

The APA on Plus Expenses charters equals roughly 35% of the yacht’s base price. This is a fee that’s collected prior to charter, and it’s similar to an expense account the captain can access during the charter. At the end of the charter, you will receive a detailed accounting of your APA account, plus any unused APA funds in cash.

In the case of overages, you may be required to replenish the APA account during the charter. This can be done with cash, although many choose to set up accounts with their charter brokers , which can be accessed if requested by the captain.

Taxes and Value Added Tax (VAT)

Most boats – whether all-inclusive or Plus Expenses – will not include local taxes or a Value Added Tax into their charter rate. The charterer will be responsible for paying those taxes. Taxes range significantly by destination; here’s a look at some of yachting’s most popular destinations:

  • The Bahamas – Tax: 4% plus 10% VAT
  • BVI – Tax: between $6 and $16 per person per day, depending on the flag of the boat
  • Croatia – VAT: 13%
  • Florida – Tax: 6% for Broward County, 7% for Miami-Dade County
  • France – VAT: 20%, however, 10% can be applied when an itinerary includes International Waters
  • Greece – VAT: 12%
  • Italy – VAT: 22%, however 6.6% (over 24m) and 8.8% (under 24m) can be applied when an itinerary includes International Waters
  • Montenegro – NO VAT
  • New England – NO TAX
  • Spain – VAT: 21%
  • Turkey – NO VAT

Charterers can purchase cancellation and curtailment insurance – which is similar to traveler’s insurance. This insurance can help cover costs if a charterer must cancel or shorten the charter. Charter brokers can help you weigh insurance options, and often offer several different options.

Crew Gratuity

While crew gratuity is certainly not mandatory, it is recommended, particularly if you were truly impressed with your charter experience. In general, crew gratuity is roughly 15-20% of the base charter rate, which is handed to the captain at the conclusion of your charter.

Delivery Fees

While these fees do not apply on most charters, you may be asked to pay delivery costs if you are not chartering in the yacht’s normal cruising ground. In most cases, you will only be required to cover the fuel for the trip.

Additional Charter Cost FAQs

What are standard private charter yacht prices?

There are a number of factors that affect charter yacht pricing. However, on average, a week-long private yacht charter costs anywhere from $10,000 on luxurious sailing yachts and catamarans, and up to $150,000 for superyachts.

What affects charter yacht prices?

There are several things that influence how much your yacht charter will cost. The type of vessel, charter destination, length of trip, base cost, time of year, and local taxes all make a difference.

How much does it cost for a crewed vessel?

Charter yacht prices do increase when hiring a crew along with the boat. At Worldwide Boat, we offer two types of crewed charter experiences: all-inclusive and plus expenses. An all-inclusive charter yacht includes accommodation for all guests, food and drink, water sport activities, and fuel costs – dockage fees and taxes are charged separately. A plus expenses experience accounts for just the yacht’s base price. Things like food, drinks, fuel, dockages, taxes, and other expenses are charged separately and are usually estimated to be about 35% of the base price.

What’s included in all-inclusive boat charters?

At Worldwide Boat, your all-inclusive charter experience includes a diligent and friendly crew, water toys, food, drinks, fuel, water and electric services, and occasionally diving experiences.

What are some additional charter boat costs to consider?

After finding a base price you’re comfortable with and evaluating your package, you’ll also want to consider delivery fees, crew gratuity, insurance fees, taxes, and Advanced Provisioning Allowance rates. If you are responsible for these fees, your crew will handle the necessary transactions on your behalf.

What does it cost to rent a 100- foot yacht charter?

This depends on what type of vessel you’re looking at and how long you’ll need it for. The average weekly cost of a 100-foot sailing yacht is between $50,000-100,000. A weekly 80-foot catamaran charter runs around $40,000-100,000, and a week-long 100-foot motor yacht rental is anywhere between $50,000-80,000.

Does the price to rent a yacht change depending on what type of boat it is?

Yes. Worldwide Boat offers sailing yachts, catamarans, and motor yachts. All of these vessels have different capabilities, but there are other factors that determine the price beyond what type of boat you choose. The year the boat was built, owner, availability of water toys, onboard amenities, and the ship’s reputation can all change how much the ship is priced at.

When is the high season for yacht charters?

The price of a yacht fluctuates depending on the season. A Mediterranean yacht charter cost rises in the summer and drops in the winter, whereas Caribbean boat charter prices are high during the winter and lower in the summer months.

How does my destination affect charter yacht cost?

The more remote an area is, the more expensive it will be to charter a yacht there. That’s because prices go up in areas that have fewer boats. If you were to travel somewhere like the Galapagos, which isn’t a typical yacht destination, you’d pay more than you would if you were traveling to the Caribbean.

How much do I tip the crew when reviewing my yacht charter expenses?

It’s not required that you tip your crew, but it is recommended and appreciated. If you had an enjoyable experience it’s considered polite to tip your crew anywhere from 15-20% at the end of your charter.

We did a couple hour cruise past Peanut Island to a beautiful restaurant for some appetizers, we brought them on the boat and enjoyed them with the wine we brought with us. It was a last-minute, quick, and easy idea! Next time we will take advantage of the snorkeling equipment and fun floats Mackenzie can supply."

How to Rent a Boat with Getmyboat

December 29, 2019

How to Rent a Boat with Getmyboat

Frequently asked questions.

Yes, you can rent a boat for a day with Getmyboat. You can also rent a boat by the hour, half-day, for multiple days, or any duration that owners set on their boat rental listings.

The cost depends on the type of boat you want to rent. A pontoon boat rental can start as low as $200 a day and for something more luxurious like a motor yacht rental the cost can increase to $5,000 a day.

No, you do not need a license to rent a boat. With Getmyboat you can rent a boat that includes a licensed captain so that you can enjoy your time on the water. If you want to drive the boat yourself, depending on the specific location you will need to at the very least have a Boating Safety Certificate.

Depending on availability, you can rent anything from a pontoon boat to a motor yacht. Getmyboat has rental options for every type of boater. We have sailboats, wakeboarding boats, yachts, and party boats all for rent through our easy-to-use platform.

Renting a boat has never been easier thanks to Getmyboat. It’s simple, just search Getmyboat by the location you wish to visit, filter the boats based on type and group size, and submit a rental inquiry once you find a boat you like. Boat owners will respond with a custom offer and you can confirm and pay for the rental all through the website.

Typically a half-day boat rental is any rental duration that lasts 4 hours. Boat owners usually like to split the day into two rentals, one in the morning for 4 hours and then a second for the later part of the day. Through Getmyboat you can specify what timeframe you would like to reserve and the owner will let you know if they can accommodate your rental times.

Renting a boat is simple and quick with Getmyboat. You first search for the type of boat you would like to rent by location. You review the boats available for rent in that location and then submit a rental inquiry to the owner of the boat you want to rent. You specify the dates, group size, and duration of the rental. After you submit the inquiry, the owner will respond with a customized rental offer for you to review. Once you agree on the rental terms, you pay for the rental in full via credit card through Getmyboat to secure your rental reservation.

How we sort results

Properties on Flipkey can be sorted/ranked in the following ways:

Orders properties using various data points, in particular: ratings, number of bedrooms/bathrooms, minimum number of nights, and data relating to the interest in/bookings of the property through us, including the advertiser’s rate of providing quotes to travellers who make enquiries. Other factors include price, property capacity, number of photographs, location, amenities, appearance in search results, page views, and the advertiser’s responsiveness and cancellation rate.

Price low to high / high to low

Orders properties based on either (i) the property’s minimum nightly price, if the traveller has searched without dates, or (ii) the average nightly price for the applicable week of the year, if the traveller has input dates.

Total reviews

Orders properties by total number of reviews attached to the listing (highest to lowest), irrespective of average score. Where there is a listing with the same number of reviews as another (or a listing with no reviews), properties are sorted according to their proximity to the searched location.

Fort Myers to Key West by Boat

yacht rental weekend

Table of Contents

Last Updated on September 26, 2024 by Boatsetter Team

If you’re planning a passage between Fort Myers and Key West, you’re in luck, it’s a great stretch of water to explore with a few fun stops to drop anchor or tie up in a slip and enjoy the scenery. Much of your experience will be dictated by the type of boat and the weather but other than the hurricane season of summer, you should be able to enjoy a great boating adventure.

Explore boat rentals in Fort Myers

Distance, direction, and time

fort myers to key west by boat

The total distance is about 140 miles which a fast powerboat going 30 knots can cover in five hours, non-stop. However, keeping that kind of consistent speed may be fatiguing so plan on a more conservative 20 knots which would take 7 hours. That said, unless you’re truly in a hurry or are on a sailboat that can conservatively move at 5 knots, you’ll want to plan 2-4 stops along the way so plan a few days or a long weekend.

Whatever vessel you choose, it should be offshore capable for coastal or near-coastal work. At the most remote point on a relatively direct route, you’ll be roughly 30 nautical miles west of Everglades National Park so be prepared to be out of the sight of land.

key west trip planning

From one of the many marinas in Fort Myers you’ll head southwest along the Caloosahatchee River, to the southern end of Pine Island Sound and out into the Gulf of Mexico. You’ll have the Ten Thousand Islands off on the left. Once you reach Florida Bay north of the Florida Keys, follow marked channels to Key West, the southernmost point in the continental United States. Follow more markers to enter the harbor and its many marinas.

Bring drinking water, food, sunscreen and layered clothing because you can’t guarantee to be at a dock in a marina every evening, especially if there is an emergency or a change of plan. For at least part of the trip, you’ll be out of cell phone range so make sure there’s a VHF radio aboard.

Routing and stops

Boating from Marco Island to Key West.

Depart Fort Myers and follow markers toward Sanibel and Captiva, two barrier islands that are worth a visit. From here, you can either follow a marked channel under the Sanibel Causeway, or spend a day anchored in the Sound and then exit via Boca Grande Pass, a deepwater channel that leads into the Gulf of Mexico. You’ll cover 20-30 miles that day depending on your routing and may end up anchoring near the barrier islands.

From Sanibel to Naples, you’ll be covering about 18 miles on this stretch. Naples is a lovely area to spend the night at anchor. You can enter via Gordon’s Pass or tuck up near Keewaydin Island Beach for some fishing (with a license) or a shelling along the beach.

Next, make it a leisurely day from Naples to Marco Island that covers only about 20 nautical miles. Call ahead for transient dockage in one of the many marinas and enjoy the waterfront restaurants including Snook Inn, Capri Fish House and the Dolphin Tiki Bar. Take in a round of golf at nearby Hideaway Beach Park or go paddleboarding at Tigertail Beach Park.

The next day will be your longest as you leave the shallows of Ten Thousand Islands and Everglades City to port and head south 80 miles. Following channel markers in Florida Bay and on to Key West will be slow going so plan ahead and get an early start.

The bulk of this passage will be in open water so know what the weather is doing and bring seasickness medicine if needed.

Exploring Key West

exploring key west

Guest dockage is available with prior arrangement in one of many Key West marinas like Key West Bight Marina. Once tied up, head out to Duval Street for nightlife, Mallory Square for its sunset celebration, and the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum. Of course, you’ll need to take a selfie at the Southernmost Point concrete buoy along with the rest of the tourists.

Find boat rentals in Key West

You don’t need to add all the stops outlined above but you’ll be boating through some phenomenal places so why not slow down and enjoy your time on your own boat or one rented from a peer-to-peer sharing service like Boatsetter ?

River Tyne Dragon Boat Race set for dramatic weekend return

This Saturday will see the 'biggest ever' NE1 Newcastle Dragon Boat Race set off from Newcastle quayside

The NE1 Dragon Boat Race on the River Tyne

Get the latest news from Newcastle straight to your inbox

A colourful spectacle makes a return to the Tyne this weekend with the sight of dragon boats, accompanied by drumming, in action.

NE1’s Newcastle Dragon Boat Race will be back on Saturday and those taking part - many of them from local businesses - will be raising money for charity as they compete for the title of Dragon Boat Race Champions 2024. The annual event, which first took place in 2019, always draws big crowds to Newcastle quayside and this year the day of carnival-style entertainment will include games, challenges, face-painting and Chinese crafts.

Dragon Boat racing is a Chinese tradition which involves paddling a long wooden boat, featuring decorative dragon heads and tails, to the rhythmic beat of a drum which is said to be the dragon's heartbeat. The drummer sits at the front of the canoe, at the head of the dragon and facing the paddlers, and sets the rowing beat for the race which is all about synchronised movements.

Each boat will hold a team of 16 paddlers and a drummer who will cover - at speed - a 250-metre-long course between the Millennium Bridge and Tyne Bridge, for a chance to win medals and the champion title. In the run-up to Saturday's race, there also will be a corporate Dragon Boat day on Friday, making, in all, 43 teams competing over two days, in support of the Newcastle Hospitals Charity.

On Saturday 25 teams, with more than 400 contestants, will take part in the main event and the action will again get under way with a Chinese lion dance, involving bells and drums, performed by the Newcastle Kung Fu Club. A warm-up with trainers will follow in front of Quayside Garden then the first boats will take to the water at 10am.

The NE1 Dragon Boat Race on the River Tyne

With 16 paddlers in each team sitting in pairs, over the day there will be three heats in each race, featuring up to three boats, to set fastest times. The six fastest boats will then go head to head in a grand final at the end of the day then at a 4pm closing ceremony there will be the presentation of gold, silver and bronze medals and the crowning of the winners of the NE1 Dragon Boat Race Champions 2024.

There also will be charity collections at the race. Rachel Barlow, head of marketing and events at NE1 said: “We are lining up to host the biggest-ever Newcastle Dragon Boat Race.

A previous NE1 Dragon Boat Race on the River Tyne

"We expect to shatter records and have fun on the quayside and the water. The event will provide hours of fun with activities on dry land for spectators and prize-winning games and fun, all in aid of Newcastle Hospitals charity."

She called it "a fabulous day out for the whole family" and encourages as many people as possible to go and cheer on the racers and enjoy the event in support of a worthy local cause.
