80 Viking Sportfish [Boat Review + Video]

Take an extensive tour of the 80 viking sportfish [set in my waves] in jupiter, florida with mike burke..

This article is a transcription of the 80 Viking video from Denison’s YouTube Channel . Tune in daily to discover the latest yacht video walkthroughs from the world’s largest yacht video collection. Watch the full video below:

Hi, my name is Mike Burke . I’m with Denison Yachting, and we’re aboard the SET IN MY WAVES , an 80 Viking here in Jupiter, Florida. We just got back in from an awesome sea trial where the boat hit 40 knots handled beautifully. There’s a few things I’d like to show you today, including this beautiful salon that we’re in, the massive cockpit going back and the four state rooms down below. This galley is so great for entertaining while you’re making dinner or hors d’oeuvres.

You’ve got people sitting at the bar, you’ve got people sitting at the salon and you actually have more space over there in the dinette. This boat is set up perfectly. If you want a cruise, you can sit back and enjoy the ride. If you’re a serious fishing guy and you need a fighting chair, we could put one in, it comes with a plate already there.

So it’s easy to mount, but you’re already set up with your live wells and your outriggers ready to go either way. One of my favorite things about this 80 Viking is the enclosed fly bridge. Later on, you’ll see the electronics, you’ll see the space. The greatest thing, or one of the greatest things about a big enclosed bridge boat like this is that the family can all be together. How many times have you been running your boat and everybody’s downstairs, but an enclosed bridge boat, you can come up here in the comfort of AC with no wind, no noise and enjoy a nice movie or watch NASCAR on one of the screens and everybody can spend their time together.

80 Viking Salon

One of the spaces I look forward to showing you is the engine room. She’s powered with twin 2,600 horsepower MTU engines. She only has about 1,450 hours, has extended warranties and is ready to go, all updated with all of her services. Normally we would start on the outside, but we’re going to show you the spacious interior on this boat to let you know that you can either fish these boats or you can cruise them.

This boat is set up for cruising. With her 21-foot beam, she’s spacious inside, pop up TV over here. Storage underneath all these cabinets here and then of course, the staircase to the enclosed bridge. Another thing you find here below the stairs is an ice maker. This boat comes equipped with carpet runners throughout, covers for all the tea tables. This happens to be a high-low table. You could actually have dinner on, or you could use it as a cocktail table.

80 Viking Galley

I’m going to take you into the forward part of the salon area, where we have a big dinette where we have seating for four here and we also have three bar stools over here. We also have a nice custom wood floor inside the galley and the dining area along with custom rod storage down below. We have two TVs, one on the wall, one in the salon there, along with the day head that’s right here. Outside the day head here, we have a very nice wine cooler.

Next to the wine cooler, we have a pantry, large amount of storage, and then this takes you right into the galley. This boat’s pretty unique in the sense that it’s actually got an oven. So if you like to cook, this could be the boat for you. It also has a dishwasher back here along with refrigerator freezers, all in the cabinets here.

80 Viking Master Stateroom

Now that we’ve seen the salon and the galley, follow me down to the master state room. She’s full beam and very spacious. We’re here in the master state room where we have a full size king bed here with upgraded mattresses throughout. Over my shoulder here, you have a very nice large window, which gives you a lot of natural light.

It’s very spacious, nice walk around into the master head with vanity and shower. Come follow me forward to the cruise quarters on the starboard side. Here we have the cruise quarters with a nice upper and lower birth with storage. You have separate hanging closets for both the captain and the mate and going aft, you have a nice unsuited, large head and shower for the crew. And across the hall from the crew, we have our first VIP state room king size bed walk around with a hanging closet and storage on both sides.

80 Viking VIP Stateroom

There’s a reason why we started today’s walkthrough on the interior. This boat is a totally custom 80 Viking and the owner wanted specifically to have a large laundry room for the crew. In this space, we have full size washer and dryer along with a folding table, custom storage and hanging space. Following in to the fourth and final state room, the VIP.

Before we head outside, I’d love to show you the state room and the size and the storage. Over on the port side, you have a full length hanging closet. Above the bed, you have very nice storage that opens up to a skylight over the bed with storage underneath the bed and a large TV above you. Like all the other state rooms, this state room also has a large VIP head with a shower and custom flooring. Coming out of that air condition saline area, we’re moving into the cockpit.

80 Viking VIP Stateroom

The cockpit on this Viking’s broken down into two sections. You have the mezzanine area with the tables that can flip up and flip out of the way. Nice place to come out, have a cigar, have some lunch, maybe drink a cup of coffee, or if you’re fishing, you’re actually watching the bates from up here.

We also have refrigerated drink boxes with the ice chipper. Storage tackle center over here, access to the injury room over here, freezers over here, both left and right which is nice.

And then you move into the other part of the cockpit, the fishing part, two fish boxes here, there’s split with access to the Sea keeper gyro, which got upgraded to a 32, a year and a half ago. Very little time on it, works great. You come over here to this nice live well with the window in it, got a couple lights in it. So you can see your bay fish at night, or just sit back and enjoy the view. Lots of storage underneath both sides for your shimmies and your mops to keep everything out the way.  Nice and clean.

80 Viking Cockpit

We touched on this earlier. This is engine room access conveniently located in the mezzanine floor. This is the area we’re going to check out next. On the motor yachts, you have your water tight door aft. On the Vikings, they all have the engine room door right here, which is a water tight door coming down the stairs from the mezzanine seating area.

And in the mechanical space itself, we have a pair of MTU, 2,600 horsepower engines currently with about 1,475 hours on it with one year of extended warranty, which you could add to up to 10 years. Forward, we have the membranes for the water makers. We have the engine room vents and all the way aft, we have a pair of Cummins generators, 29 kW each with about a thousand hours on them.

80 Viking Engine Room

Now that we’ve finished up in the engine room, let’s go forward to the bow where we could talk about the toys, which is another great part of this boat. This 80 Viking has such a massive bow on it. That it’s able to take a 17-foot Dinghy or a nice flats boat or two jet skis, whatever you choose. It depends on your fun program. It also has a 2,200-pound davit that’s hydraulically left to right and up and down. The thing that completes this boat is having the Dinghy on the bow.

Should you want to go explore a little island or you want to run to the bar, you can lower the Dinghy over the side. It makes for great family fun and is a great reason to own a boat like this. Another thing to point out is the safety of this bow rail. This bow rail actually extends back towards the fly bridge house.

80 Viking Bow

So when you’re lowering this Dinghy, it keeps people from falling off. And all the way forward on the bow, we have a large anchor locker here for fenders and a fresh water wash-down. This large bow pulpit makes it incredibly easy to drop the anchor.

I’ve already shown you the mezzanine and the mezzanine seating. I want you to see this large overhang to keep you in the shade with the air conditioning. I’m going to go upstairs and show you the fly bridge seating and overhang as well. I want to bring you up to one of my favorite spots on the boat. The view overlooking the cockpit is awesome. You have a nice seating area here with storage. You have the spreader lights up top and a nice overhang for some shade. I want to bring you over to the aft docking station where the captain runs the boat, to dock the boat or fish the boat.

80 Viking Flybridge

This beautiful teak helm pod was an upgrade along with bow thruster buttons, right in the handles. Below this hatch, you have your hydraulic outriggers, both port and starboard so you can let your riggers out. You also have a garment GPS as well as start and stop engine MTU controls. And directly overhead of the wheel here, you have some teaser reels, US nine. They’re the biggest ones they make to pull a dredge, or pull whatever you might want to do as far as your fishing goes.

Wrapping up here, follow me back inside. We started with the interior and we’re going to finish with the interior. We’re here in the fly bridges. This 80 Viking going to show you the controls and the spaciousness of what a large enclosed fly bridge boat looks like. The enclosed fly bridge is broken down into two halves. The back half is for your guests or anyone that may want to sit and watch TV while the boat’s running. Up here doing 30 knots. There’s no wind, no noise, super quiet.

80 Viking Control Station

A lot of stores underneath the sofas. You have a set of refrigerators over here and a nice cocktail table finishes off the space. Also, this couch can be converted into a sleeper sofa. So if the four state rooms below aren’t enough and you need a little extra space, you can use this as a fifth stay room.

And the forward area of the enclosed bridge is where the captain runs the boat from. And this is where the captain monitors all the systems. This boat has a very intense, upgraded electronics package to the tune of $250,000. All garment electronics, you can control your ice chippers from here. You’ve got all your gauges FLR night vision and of course, a bath raster.

Thanks for joining me today on the walkthrough on this 80 Viking, SET IN MY WAVES. If you would like a private showing, please feel free to gimme a call. She’s sitting at the Bluffs in Jupiter, Florida.

Viking Yachts 80 Convertible Profile Image

Viking Yacht’s latest creation in the 80-foot sportfish category combines heart-pounding acceleration, hardcore fishing options, and a cockpit made for fighting angry Marlin. Step through the door into the salon however, and you are greeted with satin walnut joinery, leather appointments, and a convenient day head just to the left. The J-shaped lounge and hidden 60-inch flatscreen t.v. provide an excellent area to take a break from fishing. A dinette is built-in and sits slightly above the rest of the salon because it doubles as rod storage with the ability to hold 80-pound outfits. And for the captains that like to cook, everyone will appreciate the size of the walk-in pantry in the galley which is literally the size of an extra stateroom.

Outside on the cockpit, which measures 216-square feet, everything is rigged for the serious tournament angler. This fish-focused area includes a transom door for pulling in your catch, tackle storage, freezer, live well, fish boxes, and an ice chest. And of course, looking down onto the cockpit is the custom tuna tower from Palm Beach Towers that includes all electronics and equipment already installed.

The Viking 80C has five staterooms on board including a luxurious full-beam master suite that boasts the full king-sized walkaround bed just like her bigger sibling, the 92 Convertible. Each stateroom on board has their own private head and shower in true Viking fashion.

All that boat can reach 40+ knots? Powered with tier 3 MTU Series 2000 V16 M96L engines each pushing over 2,600HP launches the 80C right out of the water and can hit max speed in no time with a comfortable cruise in the mid 30 knots. There is plenty of power on board as well to run the A/C with two 29KW Onan generators so you never have to worry about fishing in the heat. Success Comes Standard

  • By Ken Kreisler
  • Updated: June 10, 2016

Viking Yachts, Viking 80, Sportfishing

During the past 20-plus years, I’ve reviewed many of the sport-fishermen that have slipped down the ways at the Viking facility in New Gretna, New Jersey. I have even been on the production line of some of those very boats. I reported on the advances in technology and building techniques that have allowed Viking CEO Patrick Healey and his designers, technicians, workers, installers, captains, and sales and support staff to live up to the Viking mantra: building a better boat every day. Proving the point anew is the builder’s Viking 80C.

To be sure, there’s beauty in this beast, and it is obvious to the eye and the senses as she comes into view. She bears all the hallmarks of her 92 Enclosed Bridge big sister, starting with a wonderfully symmetrical profile topped off by a skyscraper-like tower, built by Viking’s own Palm Beach Towers.

Immediately noticeable are her sharp entry, proud bow and foredeck, well-proportioned house, striking black mask, low-slung 216-square-foot cockpit and curved transom with eye-catching tumblehome in the corners. “One of the things we do on all our boats, right up through the 92, is to figure out how best to use the space by looking at the previous one,” says Ryan Higgins, Viking’s corporate captain. That philosophy leads to constant evolution in aspects such as cockpit ergonomics, interior stowage and especially engine-room layout.

This yacht’s engine room is well laid out, even with the big, optional, 2,635 hp MTU 16V 2000 M96L diesels that were installed on our test boat. (Twin 1,915 hp Cat C32 ACERTs are standard.) Plenty of headroom (6 feet 4 inches on centerline), total access to all maintenance areas and equipment, refrigerator-white Awlgrip finish and places for all the redundant systems (including a pair of 29 kW Onan gensets and two centralized sea-water pumps) are just some of the features found here. “It comes from all the members of our design teams actually getting out on the boats and using them as they are meant to be used,” Higgins says.

Viking Yachts, Viking 80, Sportfishing

It might seem like a small point, but I noticed that the sitting height on the lower mezzanine gives the crew perfect sight lines aft, to either side or while right behind the burly Release Marine fighting chair. A forward-facing curve on the mezzanine’s edge provides a bit more space behind the chair too.

The business end of the 80C has stowage under each gunwale together with an oil X-Change-R system with quick connects, drop-in deck boxes, a dedicated compartment for a Seakeeper 26 gyro, transom and in-sole livewells, Eskimo shaved-ice makers, chill boxes, four stainless-steel bait trays, a refrigerated step box and an upper mezzanine bench with more stowage underneath. And yes, the mezzanine is air-conditioned from above.

“Laying out these bigger boats has become more and more custom for us,” Higgins says. “With this boat, and the 92, each one is different. And as long as the synergy between the owner and the factory is planned well in advance, there is enough leeway to accommodate their needs.”

The interior layout is given equal weight, with the portside galley forward, turned stern-to-bow instead of the usual athwartships position. Past the starboard dinette — with its rod stowage drawer below — and down the stairs, a companionway leads to the staterooms. “We introduced this layout on the 92, and it went over so well that we decided to offer it here,” Higgins says.

Viking Yachts, Viking 80, Sportfishing

The salon has a C-shaped sofa to port with stowage below each section, as well as space for three guests to stretch out on a long run. Just as I entered the electric sliding door from the cockpit, there was a day-head to starboard. (On the 80 Enclosed Bridge model, the head will move forward of the dinette.) This part of the salon also has a stowage console with a 60-inch TV.

“As far as A/V equipment, we’re running a [universal remote control] system from any remote in whichever stateroom you are in,” Higgins says. “You can pull up navigation equipment, plotters, sounders, radar and cameras, as well as controlling all the lighting and the Sirius radio and weather.” In addition, the 80C has Dometic’s new Smart Touch Integrated Intelligence Control system, allowing onboard or off-site smartphone or tablet control of the watermaker, refrigeration, air conditioning and any other Dometic component.

The space just forward of the galley has a bunk room, which can be an office, extra pantry or rod and tackle stowage. “Hull No. 4 put a full-size, side-by-side washer and dryer in here, with lots of shelving space,” Higgins says.

Viking Yachts, Viking 80, Sportfishing

A five-stateroom, five-head layout belowdecks includes a full-beam master, a queen-berth VIP forward to port, a pair of bunk staterooms to starboard and, fully forward, a forepeak stateroom. All are spacious, with headroom averaging between 6 feet 4 inches and 6 feet 7 inches, plus all the stowage needed for extended time away from home.

Topsides, the bridge is well laid out, with clean sight lines forward and aft. Because of an elevated helm platform, views of the bow are unobstructed, even while guests are gathered in the seating area.

The helm itself is big enough to hold an array of displays under a glass cover. Many operations are controlled by easy-to-reach, soft-touch buttons, all within an arm’s length to either side. The Dometic STIIC touchscreen and the Carling Technologies OctoPlex system, which controls all the breakers on the boat, are readily accessible, along with management of the FLIR cameras, Viking VIPER independent rudder steering system, Seakeeper gyro, fire systems and more.

Viking Yachts, Viking 80, Sportfishing

“I can control just about every system on the boat from here,” Higgins says. And, as with everywhere aboard the 80C, this space has plenty of stowage, along with refrigerated drink boxes and freezers.

I finished my tour and Higgins hit the starters. It was time to leave the dock from the Viking Service Center in Riviera Beach, Florida. Underway, the 80C delivered pure Viking excitement and performance.

Thanks to weight-saving techniques throughout the boat — including a Kevlar-infused hull, carbon-fiber laminate in the deckhouse and hardtop, and a smoother running bottom with strut cones and many of the pickups flush-mounted — this 145,461-pound battlewagon moved through the water at 41-plus knots at her top end, with a comfortable 2,100 rpm cruise of 35.2 knots. She carved precise turns at those 35-knot speeds and backed down with nimbleness, assurance and control as the electric tabs automatically retracted. I had the feeling of hitting the throttles and letting raw power take over as she jumped out of the hole. Once you get your hands on the wheel, it’s hard to let go.

As a portent of positive things to come, and alongside some hefty weed lines, we sighted no fewer than three large baitballs breaking on top and a slew of cutting sailfish rounding up their food. They were sure signs the future is bright for the Viking 80C.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

viking 80 sportfish yacht

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

viking 80 sportfish yacht

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

viking 80 sportfish yacht

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

viking 80 sportfish yacht

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

viking 80 sportfish yacht

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

viking 80 sportfish yacht

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

viking 80 sportfish yacht

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Viking Truvor Review

viking 80 sportfish yacht

Despite political pressures that have created one of the chilliest travel climates in Russia since the Cold War, Viking Truvor's regular "Waterways of the Tsars" river cruises between St. Petersburg and Moscow give Western passengers an in-depth, exceedingly comfortable introduction to the world's largest country.

Built in the former East Germany in 1987 for Soviet vacationers (think bare-bones cabins and bathrooms so small the sink doubled as a shower), the 204-passenger Truvor was renovated from stem to stern in 2013. Like its sister Viking ships sailing in Russia, Truvor merges a muted Scandinavian sensibility with a nod to its Russian surroundings. Light woods combine with blue and beige upholstery, and walls are hung with reproductions of vintage Russian maps and posters.

As a pioneer in Russian cruising -- the company owns its ships, rather than leasing them, and has operated there since 1997 -- Viking holds an edge in staff and programming. In addition to local guides, Truvor sails with three Russian tour escorts who provide expert -- and, at times, surprisingly candid -- commentary on the country's rich history and fascinating, complicated present.

Truvor's itinerary includes three days each in St. Petersburg and Moscow, with complimentary guided excursions. The ship docks about an hour's drive outside the city centers, but Viking offers free bus transportation for passengers who want to explore on their own, as well as detailed instructions on how to access the cities' excellent subway systems.

In between the major cities, Truvor winds through a web of rivers, canals and lakes (including Ladoga and Onega, Europe's largest), with scenery that ranges from wild to suburban. Highlights include a stop at remote Kizhi Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its wooden, onion-domed churches built without nails, and the "Golden Ring" city of Uglich, where passengers stop for homemade moonshine and conversation at the home of a local resident.

Fellow Passengers

Most Truvor passengers have taken at least one other river trip, and on a recent cruise, more than half of the cruisers were repeat Viking customers. While the average age has been skewing younger in recent years, the demographic for Russia cruises is decidedly 55 and older. American couples dominate, though this itinerary also draws Canadians, Brits and Australians.

Viking Truvor Dress Code

Like most river ships, Truvor emphasizes comfort over high style. As one pearl-draped London passenger noted somewhat disappointedly during an August sailing, pullovers and khakis were as common at the captain's welcome and farewell dinners as at every other meal, despite Viking's suggestion that those special evenings called for "dressy, but not formal" attire. (Those who plan to attend a performance at Moscow's famed Bolshoi Theatre might want to pack a sports jacket and dress, however.)

Layered clothing, comfortable walking shoes and rain gear are essential in Russia. Truvor sails between early May and mid-October, and even midsummer weather can be blustery and cold.

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

viking 80 sportfish yacht

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

viking 80 sportfish yacht

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

viking 80 sportfish yacht

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

viking 80 sportfish yacht

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

viking 80 sportfish yacht

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

viking 80 sportfish yacht

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

viking 80 sportfish yacht

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

viking 80 sportfish yacht

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

viking 80 sportfish yacht

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

viking 80 sportfish yacht

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

viking 80 sportfish yacht

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

viking 80 sportfish yacht

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

viking 80 sportfish yacht

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

viking 80 sportfish yacht

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

viking 80 sportfish yacht

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

viking 80 sportfish yacht

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

viking 80 sportfish yacht

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

viking 80 sportfish yacht

Inspiration:

For some more inspiration, you can look through the Street Photography of Moscow photographer Artem Zhitenev  and check out 33 of my photos taken in Moscow .

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

viking 80 sportfish yacht

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.
