Our History

• Work for us

Hutton's is the UK's leading supplier to the marine industry, offering a wide range of products and services to the international shipping and worldwide offshore industry. Hutton’s Timeline

Started as Hull’s first iron monger known as Metcalfe’s.

Hutton & Co Ships Chandlers is formed.

Taylor Bros, a Hull grocer, begins to supply ship provisions.

Hutton’s helps the war effort by supplying ships visiting the River Humber.

Hull Ship Stores is established - increasing the Taylor’s product range to cover all shipping items.

Hull Ship Stores undertakes its first export order to the four-masted barque “Bellands” in St Nazaire, France. The order included 80 barrels of salted beef and 5,000 square yards of sail canvas.

Following World War II, local ship owners acquire the company and appoint Alan Marshall to run it.

Hutton’s is acquired by the Fitch Lovell Group, later becoming part of the Booker Group.

Hull Ship Stores is rebranded as HSS International.

Hutton’s is acquired by the Taylor family and Alan Taylor is appointed as Managing Director.

Hutton & Co Ship Chandlers and HSS are amalgamated, trading as Hutton’s.

Alex Taylor succeeds his father to be appointed as Managing Director.

Beruldsen’s in Edinburgh is acquired and incorporated under the Hutton’s name, our first Scottish facility.

Marine & Offshore Medical Supplies Ltd, a specialist supplier of medical products and services to the shipping and offshore industries, is acquired and rebranded as Hutton’s Medical.

Hutton’s opens an Aberdeen office and warehouse facility to target the offshore oil and gas market.

Pan Europe Ship Supply Ltd, in Milford Haven, is to establish a Welsh base for Hutton’s.

Hutton’s acquires the Pembroke-based ship supply specialist Lars Knutsen & Clode.

Hutton’s is nominated finalist in Hull Business of the Year.

New head office facilities opened, providing 3 acre site with 50,000 sq ft warehouse containing ambient, chilled and frozen storage.

Norfolk-based offshore supply specialist Harbour Chandlery Marine Services merges with Hutton’s to become Hutton’s Renewables.

Hutton’s achieves full Iso accredition, guaranteeing quality standards across all sectors of the business.

Hutton’s completes 200 years of service to the shipping industry.

Hutton’s is a long-established name that is synonymous with the UK ship supply industry.

Our People & Experience

Hutton’s Group is led by ship supply expert Alex Taylor, a former merchant seaman with logistics expertise, who joined the business in 2001, following a management buyout a year earlier by his father Alan Taylor.

Between them, the Taylors have more than 100 years of experience in the shipping industry, having operated the family-owned Hull Ship Stores, later rebranded as HSS International, since 1925.

Since taking over as Managing Director in 2005, Alex’s leadership has seen us focus on specialist ship supply and we are now the UK’s leading supplier to the marine industry.

From our large warehouse facility and headquarters in Hull, we oversee a network of regional branches and can provide comprehensive UK-wide coverage.

One of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s super yachts has docked in Aberdeen – and locals are confused by its appearance.

The £100million Sherpa has been attracting much attention, with people taking photos of the 243ft ship from Market Street and Regent Quay.

But many people are bemused by its appearance – comparing it to a trawler.

“I’d never have put that as a super yacht,” said one.

“Looks like something out of Trawlermen,” said another.

One person added: “He needs to rethink his boat – some fishing boats look better than that.”

Why does the Sherpa look like it does?

Named Sherpa after its huge carrying capacity, billionaire Sir Jim had the vessel built in 2018 to accompany his first £150 million superyacht – the Hampshire II.

Believe it or not, the Sherpa is one of the smaller members of his fleet.

The cruiser was custom built by Feadship and designed by yacht designers, RWD, with the aim of travelling to extreme locations across the world.

The vessel – which has cruising speeds of 13 knots and a range of 4,500 nautical miles – is described as an expedition yacht.

It is equipped with a crane and storage facilities for long voyages and research trips.

But despite the practical nature, it also has luxury touches and comes equipped with everything one might need while out on the high sea.

It has a helipad, two VIP suites, four guest cabins and a bar and dining area. It can comfortably accommodate up to 12 guests and 22 crew.

The deck is finished to a high standard and has several sheltered areas for guests to sit and enjoy a drink outside.

Who is superyacht owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe?

Sir Jim, the founder and CEO of petrochemical company INEOS , is said to be worth more than $16 billion.

The British billionaire founded the company in 1998, and posted a turnover of $65 billion in 2021.

He also recently made headlines after he bought a controlling stake in Manchester United this year.

The 71-year-old has pledged to pump over £1.25 billion into the English Premier League club back in February.

It is unknown why his yacht has made an appearance in Aberdeen, or if he was on it.

It has been docked since 4pm on Monday.
