Oh this thread should be fun. It's no secret that the Admiral and I are actively searching for a 53-65' MY. I've limited my search to 2 quality brands - Hatteras and Viking. I have to be honest- the Admiral prefers the layout of Viking. Especially the 55' Viking MY. She likes the stairway to the bridge as opposed to the lower helm ladder on most 58'+ Hatts. Besides that, she thinks the 55 Viking is just cozier. She also likes the complete walk around deck as opposed to having to go through the salon when going bow to stern. So give me some counterpoints to compare or I might just end up with a Viking MY.

What? You've been a HOF memeber for 10 years and have over 2K post and you need to ask a question why is hatteras better than Viking? I bought a Hatteras mainly because of this HOF site that I knew I could count on people to help me when I had a question. Ford or Chevy? Did I miss something? Your screen name is Passages. Have you been traveling by boat? Sorry for the questions, I havent read some of your previous post. I dont mean to be a pain either. I am loyal to Hatteras only because I have met so many great people here on the HOF and we all like our boats.

OK, I deserved that. FWIW - I've been out of big boats since I sold Passages in 2008. (Got out in just the nick of time) I really have not posted much for the last few years. From a technical point, I have some ammo such a better sea keeping, DD 71's as opposed to the more sensitive 92's, structural integrity - but Viking ain't no Carver either, build records & spare parts availability (Thanks SAMS) and of course you wonderful folks here on HOF (even Freeebird). On the downside for Hatteras - less cozy interiors according to Admiral, window leaks are more of an issue, Deeper drafts means fewer harbor options and more fuel consumption. Did I miss anything?

Vikings are big and plush. Id consider it a better live aboard but choose your days for crossings more cautiously than a Hatt.

Honestly, if I were looking at a liveaboard, I wouldn't limit myself to Hatteras either. In fact, my "realistic" liveaboard dream boat is a 61' Tollycraft. Come to think about it, I believe Jim boarded one of those with me at FLIBS a few years ago. Only the second one I've ever been on with the first being over 25 years ago. Fell in love with that one and never got over it.

I had always heard that the vikings had a flatter bottom and therefore tended to pound more in comparable seas. Also remember being told that they had hull issues for a few years. Something regards the stringers not being robust enough. I too like the layout of the Viking, but my a$$ is worth something to me and if I get myself into trouble (more than likely) I would like to know I have the most sea worthy vessel in the MY class. Let her pick the curtains, you pick the boat.

My only experience with them is a delivery a few years ago, a 60 something with 12v71. Good boat, well built. Fantastic engine room. Viking MY were built by the Lazzara family near Tampa, who later went on building their own boats obviously (before Viking they build gulfstars trawlers and motor sailors) I didn't care for the 80s vintage modern interior decor, but no worst that hatteras white wash if that era I never ran her in rough stuff, we had a smooth gulf steam crossing that day

When I started looking at my 53, I also looked at the 44 Viking. Both nice boats. Not knowing what Viking put in the "other" boat your looking at for engines, I would guess that the Viking is a little faster (maybe double)? My initial and still opinion is that the Viking MY's are ugly. Bad lines. Looks like a sport fish with a hard camper top mounted on the the cockpit. Just sayin'… The biggest reason I chose the Hatt is 1) looks; 2) stout construction; 3) this forum and its knowledge. Don't under estimate this forum's ability to keep you on the water with what could be expensive repairs for a yard to complete (and half @$@ the repair). I myself, just traded out of my Hatt to go with "another brand" (due to how I'm currently using my boat) and the other brand also has a forum. Its crap. I can't get any info from it. The members on that forum are clueless about their boats, and boating in general. Its like doing a solo crossing without a VHF or ice maker! Go with the Hatt.

You might be able to match the lengrh and width to some of the older models listed here: http://www.fiberglassics.com/library/Viking_(Indiana ) Any family history in Indiana? That ^^^ Viking was based in Indiana. For now, I'll leave the 2 topics separate, but try not to start more then 1 topic in multiple forums about the same project.

Thanks. This post isn't about the project, its more of some research since Google just gives me pics of Viking style boats. I do live in Indiana, third generation. Something that may or may not be interesting, this Viking boat, my GW Invader, and my Sylvan pontoon were all made in Indiana...

That boat, was made in Canada, the link I posted in the restoration section actually shows the original ID plate on another Viking 12 footer. Where I grew up in Washington, we used a see a lot of Viking boats on the lakes and fishing in the Columbia river.

Viking Yachts- What do you think

viking yacht forum

Wanted to get some feedback on Viking Yachts. Does anyone on the board have one? Had one? Opinions? Thanks Brandon

THEY DON"T SUCK!!!

He's right...they don't suck! I have my own opinions about boats, but there's nothing wrong with a Viking (or an Egg Harbor as talked about a few threads down). If buying new, I'd give serious consideration to a Carolina built hull. But that's JMO. Jay

Viking makes an awesome boat for a being a production hull. Ask reel doozy (TFM), aka: Kenny who is a Yacht Broker and been a Captian for many years. he can give you both side of the story. Currently owns and runs a 58 foot Sculley.

Top notch! (Fishin board bizness must be very good for you).[smile]

I have worked on the express modle the 55, 61 enclose and a 65 and they have all been great i loved the ride and the raised fish well, justin

brandon, call mike lohr of lohr custom boats. he is building a 45 express right now and his prices are good. like the other guys i love vikings but these carolina boat are unreal. good luck! Lohr Custom Sportsfishing Boats P.O. Box 497 Mayo, Maryland 21106 757-676-6738 p.s. i dont work, own or represent lohr. just thinking about having a boat built

viking yacht forum

I beleive Capt Joe is running a 57 Viking and just returned from a trip to the islands.

My father-in-law to be has a 57" It is an awesome machine. Not the fastest vessel but very fishable and the most comfortable ride I have ever been on.

Thanks for all the feedback. One of my concerns was that it was a production hull, that has its +'s and -'s. What is everyone's thoughts on Hatteras Yachts. There are a bunch of 60's on the market with enclosed bridges that looks pretty nice? Thanks! Brandon

Hatteras makes a heavy boat. I would go the custom route. You have 2 awesome custom builders in this area, Weaver and F&S. I work on a 58 F&S. Twin 1300 MANS that cruise easily at 33 to 35 knots. We burn 1/2 of what a Viking does. Here are some pics and info: http://www.fsboatworks.com/Espadon.aspx Karl

Brandon, I fished my father's Vikings, SUNDOG, for >25 years. He started with a used 40', then a new 41', and retired with a used 45'. We got to know the Healey family pretty well at Viking Yachts, and of course we know the Hall's of Bluewater Yacht Sales as well. All of these people are top notch, and fully stand behind their products. In my opinion, they are the best production boat on the market. Hatteras is a close second. If you want to speak with someone at Bluewater, or someone with a big Viking, or someone with a Hatteras 60 sportfisherman, bmail me. I be happy to put you in direct contact with them Tom

Brandon, When I chartered, I almost lost two trips when the port transmission went out of my Luhrs. With clients coming the next two days a friend let me use his Viking 60 so I wouldn't loose the business. After clearing the inlet on the first day in the Viking I wanted to go back and burn the Luhrs. All I can say is WOW! You can look around most boats and find faults. Not on the Viking. From the engine room to the top of the tower the Viking is one well-built ride. Even the wiring is all neatly wrapped and perfect looking. If you have the time, e-mail Viking and arrange for a sea trial. There are other well-built boats, Cabo, Egg Harbor, etc. But Viking is the standard that the others are measured by. My opinion, of course. Good luck! Tom

Go up to New Gretna, NJ and take a tour of the Viking facility. Very impressive. Their workmen are top notch. I'd agree that they're the best or close to the top of the production builders. Very responsive to customers. If you call them up with a problem they'll dig out the plans for your boat and take you through it. The Healeys are good people.

TESNOW I would like to have a father inlaw with a 57, Any chance?

brandon, you guys need to be looking at custom boats- paul mann,p spencer, davis, johnson. these boats will run circles around most of the production boats(less fuel, faster per foot, per hp). my2cents. good luck

Catstevens mentioned Mike Lohr, who builds custom boats in Maryland, was building a 45' Express now. Not sure if it's the same boat, but I was at S & S Marine in Norfolk last week & there is a new 45 Express sitting in the boat yard next door that caught my eye. I walked over to take a look...INCREDIBLE!!!!![excited][excited]. I asked the yard mgr if he knew who built the boat & if I remember correctly, he said Mike Lohr out of Maryland. They had just installed the full tower & elects. Looks to be about 90% complete...Just FYI...

Viking Marks 60 Years With New Model

Founded by bill and bob healey in 1964, the builder will launch the viking 82 this fall at the fort lauderdale show..

Viking Yacht Co. is launching a new model, the Viking 82, to commemorate the builder’s 60th anniversary.

The five-stateroom, six-head sportfish will debut later this year at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.

“Early on, my father drove home the point that Viking was about building a better boat every day, and uncle Bob insisted that we like the view from the top of the mountain and plan to stay there,” president and CEO Pat Healey, Bill Healey’s son, said in a statement. “On our 60th anniversary, the co-founders’ statements are stronger than ever.”

Viking was founded in 1964 with a winter storage shed on 17 acres in New Gretna, N.J. Today, the campus covers nearly a quarter mile with five manufacturing lines. The company also has manufacturing in Mullica, N.J.

The builder continues to be family-run, with the second and third generation of the Healey family leading Viking into its next decade. Viking includes sister companies Valhalla Boatworks, Princess Yachts America, Valhalla Boat Sales, Atlantic Marine Electronics, Viking Yacht Service Center, Palm Beach Towers and Viking Yachting Center.

The company said it has built more than 5,500 boats.

4 Most-Common Problems With Viking Boats (Explained)

' src=

Viking Boats has been a leader in cruising motor yachts and luxury sport fishing boats.

The Viking company has been in existence since the early 60s. They have built a solid reputation as a reliable motor-yacht brand.

We already looked at how reliable Viking boats are , and now we’ll turn to the most seen issues with these fine boats.

They use quality materials and continually update their innovative techniques for boat construction.

Viking Yachts have managed to keep the company afloat during difficult times to become one of the world’s leaders in semi-custom fiberglass boat production.

If you are shopping for a Viking Boat, you have come to the right place. In this article, we will share the most common concerns faced by boat owners.

We have searched through all the Viking information to find the issues you might face with a Viking Yacht.

Table of Contents

viking yacht forum

1) Water Intrusion

While there are not many problems Viking boat owners have with their boats, looking through the forums, there are some problems that owners do have.

One of these problems is hairline cracks in different areas of the boat. Some of the areas you may find them are on the open bow, hatches, and on the hull.

Typically, these cracks are just cosmetic and do not allow water intrusion or moisture. If these cracks allow in moisture, there could be rot. It would be best if you verified that no moisture is getting in by doing a moisture test.

Most often these cracks do not look good on the boat and you will want to fix the problem with the cracks. You can fix most of these cracks yourself.

2) Engine Bed System

Viking boats use a unique engine bed system that can have problems where they attach to the hull. Therefore, you want to inspect these points of attachment carefully.

You want to pay attention to the stringers. If the holes are not lined up correctly, you may not want to purchase that Viking. In many cases, this type of stringer problem is because someone drilled holes where they do not belong.

When the holes are drilled in the wrong place, it is expensive and could be beyond repair.

3) Older Model Boats

Viking has been through many changes over the decades. They also had some rough moments when they had to slim down their crew of employees.

However, they managed to make it through the tough times to create a solid reputation for constantly improving their boats.

If you have an older boat or are interested in purchasing an older boat, there are some issues you should look out for when looking at the boat.

The older versions of Vikings have wood stringers which have a tendency to rot. In addition, these older models may have engine mounts that are loose. Unfortunately, these problems are not universal for every Viking model.

Some of these problems could be as a result of someone building the boat incorrectly. If you want to purchase a used Viking, you should have a qualified marine surveyor assess the boat.

4) Old Viking Boat Parts

Viking boats are still going strong, and they are making durable and reliable boats.

Unfortunately, this also means that the parts for Viking boats are still being made.

Viking Yachts has created a large network where their customers can look for older or spare parts. They also have a customer service team is full of experts that have been trained on all the different models and systems.

Even when a customer is looking for a replacement part, that is hard to find. The customer service team can help customers find any part for all their boating needs.

General Pros and Cons for the Viking Yacht

Viking Yachts have a reputation no other boat builders can claim. Hardly any other boat manufacturer can make this assertion.

Viking uses their own production facilities to manufacture all parts for their boats, with the exception of engines, electronics, transmission systems, and air conditioning units.

Viking Yachts pay attention to all details when building their boats. No matter if it is the wiring harness, fiberglass fuel tank, or a hull-to-deck through-bolted joint.

Viking Yachts use a vacuum suction process on their boats. This process is in combination with the resin infusion of the fiberglass sheets.

This process sucks the air from the molding and pulls the resins in to replace this space. In addition, this process pulls composite material evenly in all sections of the molds.

  • Some models have cracks that may allow water to get in.
  • Older models may have stringers in the wrong place due to poor building.
  • Some older models may contain rot where water has come in.

What Do the Reviews Say?

While there is some mention of water intrusion, it is not a wide spread problem.

Even if you find a boat with some amount of water intrusion, it may not be enough to prevent you from purchasing the boat.

“You could survey the areas for water intrusion with tapping and or moisture testing. Having said all that, they are rarely a deal breaker but should be taken into account. I don’t like them unattended, but bazillions of boats float around quite happily with them.”

[Source: yachtforums.com]

Viking boats have continued to build better, more innovative, and more durable boats. Each new boat model is an improvement on the one that came before.

“Owner and dealer feedback contribute the input necessary to accumulate all the knowledge that adds up, checking every box for the boat’s purpose.”

What is the Resale Value on the Viking Yachts?

For those that can afford a Viking Yacht, they find that they hold their value well.

There are not many brands in the industry that have had the success the Viking has. They have a high owner satisfaction. Many owners have bought more than one Viking.

These boats sell well and for a high price on the pre-owned market. They sell quickly, and the resale price is often close to the original price.

Viking yacht sales are up over 50%, especially specific models. Viking 52, 54, and 56 models that were built between 2002 to 2008 are so popular that they are selling before they make it to the market.

Viking yachts that were built between 2000 to 2015 are also selling really well. So again, this is a strong market for used Vikings.

Not only do they have a high resale value, but Viking lasts a long time. Their fiberglass hull can last as long as 50 years, as long as you have taken great care of the boat.

Final Thoughts

Not only does Viking have a solid and proven reputation, but their designs are also technologically advanced while providing exact handling and stability.

The Viking company is still owned by the brothers that originally founded the company. They continue to have a family run business. Their factory is in New Jersey and employs over 1,300 employees.

They work to build a better boat every day, and with every model they build. Today, they offer 36 different yachts. They build 90% of their own boats but also have partnered with two companies to ensure the highest quality parts.

Palm Beach Towers provides aluminum tuna towers which Viking Yachts use because of their quality design and engineering.

Palm Beach Towers builds custom accessories from fiberglass and aluminum. These parts include rod lockers, fiberglass hardtops, and electronic boxes. When you customize your Viking Yacht, you can add any of these accessories.

Atlantic Marine Electronics is the other partner for Viking Yacht. They manufacture accessories such as entertainment, navigation, and communication systems.

These items can also be added to your yacht when you are ordering and customizing your next boat. For example, you may want to add an entertainment system, a multiple stations layout, and a single helm station package.

  3. Problems with Viking Yachts

One of the typical problems is the fact that the resin under the dark color will shrink more due to the much higher temperature which will eventually result in the roving pattern being visible. I have seen several MYs that have black/dark blue sides and all of them have the roving pattern visible under the dark paint.

Saw a 80-ish 48 Viking sf years back the owner had considerable wet coring repaired just to be able to sell the boat, supposedly started at the rub rail wetting very large hull side areas. All boats with balsa or plywood coring should have extensive moisture surveying when buying.

  20. Viking Owners a Special Breed?

Viking owners may be a special breed. Not everybody buys a Viking (they are not for everybody). There are many lesser makes at lower costs. Perhaps we (Viking Owners) are an elite group. I think Viking's commitment to quality, excellent customer support and their moto "Building a better boat every day" has lead to fewer issues than other makes.

  21. 4 Most-Common Problems With Viking Boats (Explained)

    1) Water Intrusion. While there are not many problems Viking boat owners have with their boats, looking through the forums, there are some problems that owners do have.
