A recent report by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) highlights the need for more competent mariners with STEM skills, specifically engineering. UKSA has responded to the shortage of engineering skills in the maritime industry by launching an Engineering Crew training course for experienced or new crew who wish to work on small vessels or enter the superyacht industry through the engineering route.
The 5-week Engineering Crew Training Course trains students in professional workshop practices and correct and safe use of tools and workshop equipment. In addition, it delivers the MCA Approved Engine Course 1 and 2, STCW basic safety training and Powerboat training. Finally, students will complete the Mental Health for Seafarers course, preparing them for life challenges at sea.
Chris Frisby, Director of Training and Operations at UKSA, said: “At UKSA, we are developing skills for future roles and creating the next generation of crew while supporting students to ensure they have the best opportunities for career progression.”
“At UKSA, our experienced and dedicated team are really excited to be offering this new engineering course, which will help students start a career in the superyacht industry or wider marine industry after just five weeks”.
Taught by UKSA’s expert tutors, the Engineering Crew training course takes place at its Cowes headquarters on the Isle of Wight and is part of UKSA’s all-inclusive offering. This includes accommodation, freshly prepared meals every day, one-to-one mentoring, access to a dedicated careers course manager, use of the on-site swimming pool and a fully equipped gym.
The qualifications gained on completion of the course include the UKSA Superyacht Crew Training Certificate, MCA AEC1, MCA AEC2, MCA Workshop Skills Training, STCW Basic Safety Training, MCA Proficiency in Designated Security Duties, Mental Health for Seafarers as well as a number of RYA qualifications.
The qualifications gained through this course will also be transferable between many industries, including superyachts, tugboats, workboats, standby, seismic survey, oceanographic research vessels, government patrol vessels and fishing vessels.
UKSA is also offering funding opportunities to many of its students to ensure training and qualifications are accessible to anyone wanting to embark on a career in yachting or watersports.

The four-year course offers a structured pathway into the superyacht industry….
Maritime training and education charity UKSA has announced the graduation of 30 students from its flagship Superyacht Cadetship course. With the support of UKSA, over 40 per cent of the course’s graduates have already secured employment, with the remaining students actively seeking new opportunities across the superyacht industry.
The four-year programme offers a career path to Officer of the Watch (Yacht <3000GT) and onward to Master (Yacht <3000GT) qualifications, and combines academic studies with periods of paid work on superyachts. Cadets also have the option to complete a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Operational Yacht Science through Falmouth Marine School.
UKSA’s charitable partners made the professional course possible for 37 per cent of this year’s cohort, with sponsorship funding for the cadets coming from The Seafarers Charity and Trinity House, with others receiving support from the Steven Thomas Bursary, and the Michael (Milo) Hanlon Bursary.
The funding options that are available to UKSA students are crucial for many in securing their places on the course. As UKSA’s CEO Ben Willows explains; “For some students, the difference between starting their journey and not, is the funding options we have available at UKSA. We are continually working to grow the number of funded students.”
For 2022, UKSA anticipates seeing the numbers participating in the Superyacht Cadetship course increase, with 40 young people expected to graduate from the first phase of the course next time around. This means that the UKSA will provide even more young people with a structured and supported pathway into a rewarding, long-term career.

Have you ever wondered what it takes to become a Superyacht Captain? To do so, it requires a combination of education, experience, and certifications across numerous years. In this article, we hear from Will Satterly, Head of Careers at UKSA , about how to become a Superyacht Captain.
As Captain, specialising in commanding and managing luxury yachts over 24 metres in length, you’ll be responsible for a crew and the safety of passengers. As well as this, you answer to the yacht’s owner about the decisions you make. Effective communication and leadership are crucial. Will elaborates:
“The Captain is responsible for the safety of the vessel and crew/passengers. Building an effective culture and maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and safety whist complying to all regulatory requirements. Managing expectations of owners and other stakeholders such as management companies, is another key part of being a successful captain.”
The smaller the yacht, the more hands-on the Captain must be. Yet they will have hold more administrative duties if the yacht is larger.
Naturally, depending on the candidate, this will vary. However, Will remarks that “6+ years is realistic to gain the necessary experience, sea time, and modules.”
As Captain, you will need:
