A circumnavigation sailing trip on a catamaran : a 1,546-day adventure across 27 countries

David and Amy

Round-the-world

Trip duration

Témoignage-David&Amy-Helia44-Hero

A round-the-world in 1,546 days

Onboard their Fountaine Pajot Hélia 44 “Starry Horizons”, the couple criss-crossed the seas and oceans for no less than 546 days, covering more than 34,140 nautical miles and 27 countries from the port of Antigua in the Caribbean, forming a loop around the equador.

Presentation of the crew

“We are David and Amy Alton, two thirty-something-year-old Americans. When we met, Amy was an engineer and David was in the oil and gas industry in finance. While Amy had grown up around boats all her life, David had only been sailing once!  Soon after we met, Amy took over the family business in the maritime industry.

Eventually, we both got our USCG 100 Ton Master’s licenses and David came to work for Amy driving her boats. This is why we call her the Admiral!”

Preparation for the circumnavigation

“Since we were both licensed captains and had been day sailing around Galveston Bay on our previous 30 feet catamaran, we had an advantage over cruisers who are starting from scratch. We did want to get more experience on bigger boats, so we chartered down in the Caribbean.

Of course, we read a lot of books, blogs, and magazines. There were hardly any sailing YouTube channels out at the time, so that wasn’t a big thing for us.”

catamaran-boat-fountaine-pajot-circumnavigation

A cruise of more than 34,140 nautical miles

“We picked up our boat from the factory in La Rochelle in October of 2014. From there, we did a self-delivery, bringing the boat to Florida in three steps to do some outfitting to kit her out for a long-term cruising boat.

From Florida, we sailed the Bahamas, then up to Nova Scotia and Maine before heading down to the Caribbean. Three months later, we passed through the Panama Canal and spent two seasons in the South Pacific.

After seven months in Australia, we sailed up through Southeast Asia, then across the Indian Ocean, exploring lots of remote islands. In December of 2019, we passed the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, and in March of 2020, we docked in Antigua,  crossing our wake and completing our world circumnavigation. “

catamaran-boat-fountaine-pajot-circumnavigation

Favorite sailing areas

“The South Pacific is easily our favorite sailing ground. The islands are remote and incredibly beautiful, and the people are amazingly friendly. French Polynesia is a dream destination, with rugged islands in the Marquesas, or idyllic atolls in the Tuamotus. Bora Bora exceeded expectations with crystal clear water and manta rays.”

catamaran-boat-fountaine-pajot-circumnavigation

Choosing the right catamaran for a circumnavigation

“When we were boat shopping, we had a list of requirements that we wanted. We did primarily look at the biggest production yards because we wanted to keep a strong resale value and yards like Fountaine Pajot have a good reputation – they’ve been building great boats for so long.

We went to the Annapolis Boat Show with a few models in mind, and when we got on the Helia is was an easy decision. The layout of the boat is amazing, and while she’s got plenty of space, she is definitely on the faster side for cruising boats.

All around the world we have meet Fountaine Pajots of all ages and sizes. Starry Horizons has held up very well in the nearly six years we have owned her, so we’ve been very pleased with our purchase.”

Circumnavigate on a catamaran

“On our entire circumnavigation, we spent less than 13% of our nights at sea. This means that 87% of the time we were stationary, at anchor or in a marina, taking advantage of the space our catamaran offered us.

Moreover, when we were sailing, we were mainly sailing downwind. Although we didn’t have much experience with monohulls, many friends complained about the performance of their boat downwind. Starry Horizons is super comfortable downwind.

It is also extremely performant and very safe, we always had confidence in our boat, even when the sea was rough, in squalls or tropical storms.”

Next adventures

“Right now, Starry Horizons is taking a well-deserved rest on the hard for hurricane season. We are back in Texas visiting our families.

We will launch again sometime within the next twelve months and cruise close to home; the Bahamas, Chesapeake Bay, or other nearby places. After that, we don’t have any plans!”

9 Best Power Catamarans For Rough Seas and Coastal!

Power catamarans are gaining popularity in the cruising world thanks to their enhanced stability and ease of operation. They’re ideal for coastal cruising but can also be used for ocean crossing thanks to their stability and speed.

Here are some of the best power catamarans on the market:

  • Fountaine Pajot MY6
  • Nautitech 47 Power
  • Horizon PC74
  • Lagoon Seventy 8
  • ArrowCat 420
  • Sunreef Supreme 68

In this article, I’ll review some of the best power catamarans out there. I’ll also go over the main features of different power cats and if they can handle rough weather.

But before we dive in, let’s get a better understanding of what power cats are.

Table of Contents

What Is a Power Cat?

A power catamaran (power cat) is a motor-powered boat that, unlike traditional boats, has two hulls connected by a bridge deck. These vessels are more stable than monohulls because of their wide base.

Power cats also don’t have a leaded keel to weigh them down, so they’re pretty lightweight and fast. The lack of a keel also means that power cats are more suitable for shallow waters.

circumnavigate power catamaran

They feature large engines designed to handle their bigger bodies and weights, and serve different purposes, like fishing, cruising, or crossing rough seas. In addition, each hull has a separate engine which makes them more maneuverable, especially at turns and tight spaces.

Power catamarans don’t have sails or masts and get all of their power from the combustion engine (or electric motor), unlike their sailing cousins. In addition, these vehicles are much easier to steer because of their increased stability.

Power catamarans have more interior and exterior space thanks to their multihull design, making them perfect for cruising and liveaboard . They also have ample space for storing everything you need on a cruise without worrying about weighing it down. Catamarans offer increased privacy as well because each hull houses one sleeping area, separated by the living area between them.

Are Power Cats Good in Rough Water?

Power catamarans are good in rough waters particularly because of their multi-hull design. Their wide base makes them stable, and their high speed allows for outrunning bad weather.

Power cats that feature a high bridge clearance, will handle rough waters effortlessly. With the added height, you won’t experience pounding and slamming even in heavy waves, allowing the crew to easily control the vessel in challenging situations.

circumnavigate power catamaran

These boats are also faster than their sailing counterparts, which means they can get you out of rough waters quickly.

In addition, since catamarans are large and tall, maneuvering is easier because you have a better view of the surroundings. Additionally, you can steer from the interior cockpit (on certain models), making it easier to control the vessel in bad weather.

Finally, although a power cat doesn’t have a keel to help it right itself in case of capsizing, it will still float easily because of its positive buoyancy.

Are Power Catamarans More Efficient?

Power catamarans are more fuel-efficient than monohulls because they don’t have leaded keels. While keels are designed to offer stability by weighing down the vessel, they increase the wetted surface and thereby add drag.

Due to the catamarans’ narrow bow entry, there’s lower resistance, leading to smoother acceleration and greater fuel economy in catamarans. In addition, power cats show fewer spikes in fuel consumption in a single power band, especially because of their smooth acceleration and fuel consumption.

The figures reported by cat owners or manufacturers show that power cats have the best power-consumption-to-speed ratios.

That being said, you can improve fuel efficiency by maintaining lower speeds; studies have shown that speed can be the most important factor in fuel efficiency, regardless of the number of engines or hull types.

Now that you have a better understanding of power catamarans, let’s take a look at the ten best models on the market.

1. Leopard 53

This 53ft (16.19m) power cat is the fourth generation of the widely popular Leopard catamarans, and brings with it all the great features from her predecessor, the 51.

Although the 51 was the company’s best-selling cat, they added these features to the 53 along with new ones to repeat its success. For example, they have built an enormous saloon, flybridge, and galley by removing the foredeck cockpit in the 51 PC, making it 30 percent larger than the previous model.

This model comes with three or four stateroom layouts, with the 3-stateroom version featuring an owner’s stateroom, two sinks, a loveseat, and lots of storage space.

With two Yanmar 370 hp engines, a maximum speed of 22 knots, and a cruising speed of 17.5, you can enjoy a magnificent ride, whether it’s long-distance cruising or a fun night out with friends.

2. Fountaine Pajot MY6

This luxury power cat is 44ft (13.40m) long, making it super spacious and suitable for families and big parties. With its spacious flybridge, sunbathing lounge, and enormous galley, it’s nothing short of a second home on the water.

You can steer the cat from the saloon or the 21sqm (68 sq ft) flybridge which features a sunbathing lounge, a pool, and a galley.

This motor yacht continues to delight with its luxurious combination of privacy and pleasure, with views of the sea in almost every interior space. With three cabins, two bathrooms, six cabin beds, ample storage, and a kitchen that opens into the cockpit, you can enjoy practicality and luxury in one place.

The MY6 is exceptionally seaworthy and stable thanks to its wave-piercing hulls and Volvo IPS engines.

Like all power cats, it has straightforward steering, enabling you to control this beast even in the roughest circumstances.

3. Nautitech 47 Power

Powered by dual Volvo Penta D4 engines, this model can output 225-300hp, reaching a maximum of 22 knots and a cruising speed of 18-20 knots . This 46′ 8″ (14.23m) long power cat comes in three or four cabin versions, depending on the customer’s preference.

No matter which layout you choose, you’ll get a spacious, luxurious, and comfortable catamaran with panoramic views from the cabin. The sleek, streamlined exterior design ensures elegant sailing and seaworthiness.

It’s easy for passengers to navigate the deck thanks to its seamless design that connects the saloon to the cockpit and the rear deck. The stern features a big swimming platform that can also accommodate a tender. The cockpit is usable in different weather conditions thanks to the clear covers wrapping the whole area.

This efficient catamaran promises long cruising for big families and groups with two 300L water tanks and a pair of 645L fuel tanks.

4. Horizon PC74

The Horizon PC 74 is another luxury power cat that can give you the comfort of your home on water. This 73′ 9” (22.48m) long power cat with a 2,000gal (7570L) fuel tank is an enormous vessel that can accommodate more than 14 people.

The enormous hardtop on the three-piece windshield, the teak dining table, the U-shaped bar, the sun pad, and the swing-out stools all guarantee that you’ll have the luxury cruising experience of a lifetime.

This vast and wide catamaran allows you to access the aft deck from the flybridge via a curving staircase. The vast aft deck has a ten-person dining table, a wet bar, and storage space. You can separate the interior and exterior spaces through sliding glass doors and make the space appear bigger by opening them.

Reaching a top speed of 23 knots and a cruising speed of 19 knots, this enormous catamaran was built for efficiency and practicality.

5. Lagoon Seventy 8

This 78’1″ (23.80m) power cat with two 494 HP engines and a 2246gal (8500L) fuel capacity is one of the largest power cats on the market, offering both comfort and reliability. The enormous flybridge can feature a jacuzzi, a sunbathing area, a large foldable dining table, and a hardtop with a moveable roof. However, you can customize the flybridge based on your preferences.

The designers have compromised nothing in terms of elegance and high-quality materials with top-of-the-line finishes and interior paneling to create the kind of luxury you want.

The saloon is huge, well-ventilated, and separated from the exterior by glass doors and panoramic windows.

But what sets Lagoon Seventy 8 apart from other power cats, in addition to its enormous size, is the wide choice of layouts. You can choose between five different versions, all offering the same amount of storage space, living and sleeping area, and privacy.

Additionally, some versions are fully customizable, allowing you to pick every detail to your liking.

6. ArrowCat 420

This 41′ (12.73m) long express cruiser is a semi-custom catamaran with two-stateroom and three-stateroom layouts. The ArrowCat 420 is designed and built with comfort and strength in mind, and capable of handling rough waters safely.

The two Suzuki 350 hp engines give this model a maximum speed of 40 knots and a cruising speed of 20 knots.

The streamlined design and the angled hulls ensure the vessel cuts through the waves effortlessly, making it easy to maneuver.

The fully-equipped head features an electric toilet, a shower, sink, and mirrors, coupled with a dining table, floor storage locker, and teak-finished floors. This cat is built to combine luxury and comfort for both onshore and offshore cruising.

7. Bali 4.3

This 43′ (13.1m) power cat is made for ocean crossing in mind. With five different layouts featuring different combinations of cabins and heads, the company ensures you’ll get the kind of setup you want. Regardless of the layout, this cat offers a spacious master suite with a large double bed and other private sleeping quarters.

You can quickly add to the overall space by removing the adjustable glass doors to merge the cockpit with the saloon.

A feature that sets the 4.1 apart from its predecessor is the fixed aft deck between the hulls, which provides a passageway and eliminates the need to go from one hull to the other without entering the cockpit.

8. Sunreef Supreme 68

According to its designers, this model was built with a radical concept in mind while staying true to the company’s promise of building the most comfortable and spacious power cats in the world.

One of the greatest features of the Supreme 68 is its aft garage that houses a 5m (16 ft) tender and two jet skis in addition to other water toys.

You can also transform the aft to a large platform for water sports by lowering the garage door.

The four-stateroom layout features ample storage, ensuite guest cabins, queen-sized beds, and TVs to create a memorable stay. The white and beige furniture with chrome details and floor-to-ceiling glazing create a soothing atmosphere that blends with the practicality of the well-equipped galley.

However, if you’re looking for something different, you can opt for a customized model from three different layouts.

9. Hudson 48

The sleek, diamond-cut design of this 46.46’ (14.16m) long power cat is usually the first thing to catch your eye.

It’s a light displacement cat that ensures fast cruising with a top speed of 24 knots and cruising speed of 8 knots thanks to the two 370hp Yanmar V8 engines.

The three-cabin layout features a master stateroom with a spacious and well-ventilated design made possible via the three overhead windows and opening deck hatches.

The saloon’s enormous helm station allows for comfortable and safe accommodation, making it great for rough waters and bad weather conditions.

This model also offers a few entertainment options with its large TV systems and mood lighting. The storage areas and the full-sized walk-in wardrobe give this model a comfortable, homely setting.

Here are Some of My Favorite Catamaran Cruising Resources

Thank you for reading this article. I hope you found it helpful as you hopefully start your sailing adventures. Here are some resources that I use as a sailor that I hope you’ll also find helpful. These are affiliate links, so if you do decide to use any of them, I’ll earn a commission. But in all honesty, these are the exact things that I use and recommend to everyone, even my own family. Sailboats: If you’re looking for the best boat to suit your needs, I would recommend a catamaran. If you’re interested, I can show you the differences between catamarans and other types of sailboats .

Books:  For getting started, I really like  Cruising catamarans made easy . It is actually a textbook from the American sailing association; it is used to get a cruising catamaran certification. There are some other great books, and I have compiled a list of books about cruising catamarans that you will find useful.

Communication:  Being out on adventures, whether it be sailing or climbing mountains, good communications are essential to being safe. I recommend two things Google fi (incredibly simple cellular data all over the world) and Garmin inreach mini (for text and voice in remote areas without cell coverage)

Sailing courses: Online sailing courses are great for beginners starting out their sailing career; it’s an efficient way of learning the basics of navigation, throttle controls, and maritime safety. I suggest starting with two free courses from NauticEd .

Seventeen years after quadriplegic sailor and Wetwheels founder Geoff Holt’s trail-blazing voyage around Britain in a 15ft dinghy, he is planning another UK circumnavigation.

Geoff unveiled a sneak preview of his plans on the main stage of BoatLife at NEC Birmingham .

The official launch event of Geoff’s “Finishing the dream” project will be taking place on 14 March at Dover, when the revamped Wetwheels vessel will be unveiled.

The vision is to take the first ever Wetwheels wheelchair-accessible power catamaran around the UK safely this May and June; the plan will be to visit approximately 17 harbours and ports, covering a distance of 1,750 miles.

Founder of Wetwheels, Geoff will Captain the vessel, supported by co pilot James Dunn and technician Sam Taylor-Nobbs.

The departure date is set for 13 May, from Tower Bridge, London. Lord Mayor of London Michael Mainelli will “do the honours” and the 9m Cheetah catamaran, will set off, travelling ‘westabout’ along the South coast, up the West coast, over the top of Scotland via Cape Wrath and back down the East coast.

Speaking on Friday, Geoff said: “This time I won’t be in a 15ft dinghy getting soaking wet and cold. At least I’ll be in a big Wetwheels power catamaran.”

Another lesson he has learned from his last challenge is not to be too optimistic with the timescale.

Geoff said: “It would be great it was four to six weeks. But having been burned so badly with my sailing ‘personal Everest’ when I told my wife it was going to be 30 days and it was 110. Try living in a campervan with a five year-old child for 110 days, it’s not easy.”

The Wetwheels project

An impetus for the challenge, is that the charity Geoff created is now running across the UK enabling people with major disabilities to experience the thrill of going to sea, yet there are four locational gaps. Geoff is keen to create Wetwheels boat bases at: Northern Ireland; East Coast; South Wales; and an ‘Outreach vessel.’

This is a £1million fundraising task.

Currently there are seven existing Wetwheels locations in: Edinburgh, Scotland; Whitby, Yorkshire; Dover; Jersey, Channel Islands; Portsmouth; Hamble; Falmouth and another one to be launched in Torbay next month.

Describing Wetwheels goals, Geoff said: “It’s getting people out, particularly those with profound, complex disabilities, from environments where they may be in sensory rooms or not normally leave their hospice or their medical setting, out on a powerboat and giving them the most amazing opportunities.”

Getting ‘out out’

After Geoff’s round-Britain challenge aboard Free Thinker in 2007, and his subsequent five-week transatlantic voyage in a 60ft catamaran, which saw Geoff become the ‘ first quadriplegic to Captain a boat across the Atlantic ‘, he began to be contacted by people from across the world asking: ‘How do you go sailing with a disability?’ ‘How do you get on the water with a disability?’

Geoff said: “Well trust me, it’s hard. It has been hard for a long time. It’s got better, it’s still not ideal. “Luckily, RYA Sailability exists, so there’s a lot of opportunities for dinghy sailing on reservoirs and rivers but there’s nothing to get ‘ out out’ as Micky Flanagan would say. “‘Out out’ on the water to feel the wind on your face, the spray on your face, to do 30 knots and have an amazing time, offshore, away from the coast . “For disabled people there was nothing. So in 2011, I did some research and discovered that the best catamaran for me to use would be a Cheetah Catamaran, two hulls , two engines on the back, just over 9m long. Every time a Wetwheels adapted Cheetah power catamaran goes out it can take up to 12 passengers of which three can be wheelchair users – pictured with Geoff Holt “The reason I went for a catamaran is it’s stable , plenty of room for people, including wheelchair users, and it was fast.” He added: “I created the boat deliberately so it wasn’t just a participatory experience. This wasn’t a trip boat that took you around the harbour and dropped you back and said ‘Did you have a nice time?’ This was about going out there and getting your heart rate up, and getting wet and getting really buzzing. “In particular that meant driving the boat [under the supervision of a qualified Captain] so the whole ethos of Wetwheels was to make it as barrier-free as possible, a shared experience with mums, and dads, friends and family, but also to just get out there, forget about your disability and have a bloody good time on the water.”

What is ‘finishing the dream’?

Within a year of creating Wetwheels the team had taken 500 people on the water with Wetwheels Solent. Fastforward 12 years and there are eight identical Wetwheels boats around the UK and Channel Islands, taking in excess of 10,000 people a year out on the water.

Geoff said: “Every time we go out we take up to 12 passengers of which three can be wheelchair users.” He added: “When I started this in 2011, my dream was to ensure that around the UK coastline there were enough Wetwheels boats to provide the opportunity for anyone with a disability to get out and have a good time. window._taboolaSlots=window._taboolaSlots||[];window._taboolaSlots.push({"mode":"thumbnails-a-mid","container":"taboola-mid-article","placement":"Mid Article","target_type":"mix"}); “Slowly, over the years we’ve started to build that network but there are gaps.”

Wetwheels is a national charity, of which Geoff is a trustee, each operator is a social enterprise. Each Wetwheels Cheetah catamaran costs £250,000, plus £100,000 a year to run.

Geoff said: “You can do the maths, it’s not cheap.” He added: “ Finishing the dream is to find a way to acquire these final four boats .”

Geoff, who became paralysed from the chest down following a shallow diving accident in 1984, told BoatLife visitors: “I’ve spent most of my life in a wheelchair, the last 40 years or so, with a severe disability. But yachting and sailing is something that’s incredibly important to me and I’ve been very fortunate to do a number of adventures.

“I sailed around Great Britain in a little dinghy , I sailed the Atlantic Ocean a couple of years after that and I’m very fortunate to be able to go sailing as much as I can through a number of charities.

“RYA Sailability is a charity I set up 25 years ago with the Royal Yachting Association and more recently with a charity called Wetwheels which I started 10 years ago.”

First circumnavigation

Geoff said: I sailed my little dinghy Free Thinking 1,500 miles around Great Britain in 2007. We stopped at 51 locations and this was a project I put together to prove to myself that as a disabled yachtsman I could still do al those amazing things that I couldn’t do before my accident in 1984. “It was a huge project, I had lots of sponsors, some of those sponsors are still with me today. “It was an incredible journey, 51 starts, 51 stops, 110 days travelling around the country, going to some quite amazing places – amazingly beautiful as well. The further North you get, the scenery and the people are just remarkable. “The plan was to go over the top, to go over Cape Wrath and the Pentland Firth. 2007 was a particularly bad year so we took the decision to go through the Caledonian Canal, it’s stunningly beautiful . “One thing that still surprises me today is all of the sea around Great Britain, on average, the deepest bit is 50-60 metres if you’re lucky. If you go through the middle of Scotland, Loch Ness, it’s 250 metres deep.”

He added: “That was my personal Everest.

“When I got back I sailed across the Atlantic Ocean. I became the first quadriplegic to Captain a boat across the Atlantic. It was a 60ft catamaran, one start, one stop, 3,000 miles and it took me five weeks.”

Geoff said being on the water, and the freedom you get from it, “everything you hear, see, smell” is something he wants to share with everyone: “Being able to do that in a safe, inspiring way was something I was very keen to create.”

Sponsors wanted

“The Project” of taking Wetwheels around the UK on a circumnavigation has already gained the sponsorship support of: Stelios Philanthropic Foundation; Raymarine – a supporter of Geoff’s since his ‘around the Isle of Wight voyage in 1992; Hugh James law firm; Cheetah Marine and the RS Marine Group; RS Electric Boats; Henri Lloyd another long time supporter of Geoff’s since 1992; plus other supporters.

In addition to his crew on board, Geoff will have a shore team, including his wife and a wheelchair accessible motorhome, a regular motorhome and another vehicle travelling around the UK.

The media launch will be taking place on 14 March at Dover, when the boat will be revealed. Geoff said: “I promise you, it looks stunning. If I say the control centre of Star Trek: Enterprise, you might get an idea of what it’s going to look like.”

Hydrogen Powered Catamaran Energy Observer Will Circumnavigate The World

circumnavigate power catamaran

Around the world in six years

circumnavigate power catamaran

An expedition that wants to circumnavigate the globe in six years using a catamaran powered by renewable energy and hydrogen is due to get underway in February 2017.

The ship is named Energy Observer and it is under construction in St. Malo, France. It is a 30.5 m catamaran fitted with solar panels. The hull is not new, having previously completed a round the world trip in 1994.

Energy Observer will use only solar panels and wind turbines to power its electric motors. But what happens at night or when is no wind? The vessel is also fitted with groundbreaking technology that uses electrolysis to charge its hydrogen fuel cells. These will power the motors when the other means are depleted.

“We are going to be the first boat with an autonomous means of producing hydrogen. For many, hydrogen is a condemned technology and the idea is to prove that these impossible things are possible" , said Victorien Erussard, co-founder of the Energy Observer project.

The project has support from a group of French naval architects, as well as the LITEN research institute. The six-year trip around the world will be used to gather data that will be used in development of hydrogen fuel cell technology for the maritime and transport industries.

Solar-Powered Catamaran Circumnavigates Earth

By Mark Fischetti

This article was published in Scientific American’s former blog network and reflects the views of the author, not necessarily those of Scientific American

This Friday, May 4, a vessel named Tûranor PlanetSolar will become the first totally solar-powered boat to circumnavigate the Earth. The broad, V-shape catamaran left Monaco on September 27, 2010, traveled west on a mostly equatorial route, and will return to the Monaco Yacht Club 584 days later. Now crossing the northern Mediterranean Sea from Corsica toward France, Tûranor will have covered 53,000 kilometers, roughly 28,600 nautical miles.

The carbon-fiber boat, 31 meters long and 15 meters wide, has a flat deck that is plastered with solar panels made by SunPower . Flaps can fold out to expose additional panels, creating a total solar area of 537 square meters (5,700 square feet). The panels, which average 18.8 percent efficiency—among the highest for commercial products—charge six banks of lithium-ion batteries that can generate up to 93.5 kilowatts of power (about 127 horsepower) and keep the catamaran going for three days with no sun. Top speed: 27.3 kilometers per hour (17 mph, 15 knots). The hull and outriggers are designed to minimize air and water resistance.

The 38,000 silicon solar cells power the boat’s motor, water systems, lights—everything except the small propane cooking stove. The six-man crew that crossed the Atlantic Ocean from Monaco to Miami was subsequently reduced to four people to demonstrate “that it is not necessary to have a large crew to operate these technologies,” says Raphaël Domjan, an independent Swiss engineer who founded the project, designed the boat and serves as its skipper. He and his team derived the name Tûranor, meaning “the power of the sun,” from J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel The Lord of the Rings .

Domjan, 39, posts a daily log on the ship’s multimedia Web site. His April 30 entry conveys a mix of excitement and melancholy: “I realize that all the details surrounding our adventure were actually the engine of our life for the last 18 months. It is an awkward feeling to think that in a few days, all these little things that had become our life will disappear forever. When we left Monaco in September 2010, I was looking forward to seeing my mountains again, but…today, I realized…that I will be missing this feeling I have when sailing off, once I will be back to my life on the ground.” His last post will be May 7, after a weekend of dockside festivities at the Monaco Yacht Club.

Armchair adventurers can follow the final two days of the crew’s journey through frequent updates on Facebook and Twitter ; Tûranor is scheduled to arrive in Monaco on Friday at 2 p.m. local time (8 a.m. EDT). The Web site also has lots of data about the boat , profiles the scientific team and details the catamaran’s current position and the course it took around the world.

Less-smitten pragmatists may wonder why Domjan built the $24 million vessel and spent millions more dollars to conduct the 18-month journey. Domjan says the planet “deserves a better, brighter and less polluted future.” The project, he says, “will help to motivate engineers and scientists to develop innovative technologies, inspire people around the world and show that the impossible can become possible.”

Less Traveled 3 Crew Spots opening up shortly!!!

circumnavigate power catamaran

Many Nations Sailing As One

I left my corporate job and suburban existence to buy an expedition catamaran, bring people from around the world together, circumnavigate, see what may be soon gone -- local cultures and pristine natural beauty -- and have a lot of laughs along the way.  I hope to have you with us one day on the crew of LESS TRAVELED.

COME WITH US

Recruiting new team members now.

Would you like to join us?  Now is the time to let us know.  We have 3 amazing people, Alex, Louise, and Dave, moving on to their next step in life, all in late December.  We will be in the Caribbean by then, and would welcome people in January, February, or March.

Our platform is fairly straightforward.  We wish to have people who will make at least a 3 month commitment, truly invest themselves in this ongoing campaign, share food and fuel costs, and otherwise bring something awesome to the table.  All boat costs are my responsibility, including spare parts, insurance, cost of the boat, etc.  We try to repair everything ourselves, but do use yards when necessary.  Regarding actual costs, we run a very lean operation and eat well but do so buying in bulk.  We can share our specific costs with you if you are interested (and I'll do a video on this soon).  We want to make this as accessible as possible to all.

Who are we seeking?  Are you from a country we never had on the boat?  Or are you a great sailor, a mechanic, healthcare professional, a videographer, super cook, a divemaster, play the didgeridoo (automatic acceptance), served in your nation's military, know how to eat 50 hotdogs in 15 minutes?  It doesn't really matter what is is, but we do enjoy learning things from each other and keeping the boat refreshed with new talents, nations, and perspectives.

Even a relatively large yacht like LESS TRAVELED gets small when you are with 6 or 7 other people for months.  Some things that really help are a great deal of emotional intelligence and self-awareness, putting others before yourself at all times, never being late to a watch or a daily duty, eagerness to learn and improve, a very positive outlook on life, a sense of adventure, patience, and love of laughter, nature, and culture.  We do not want political activists or sermonizers plying their trade aboard.

It is difficult to maintain a job while here, due to the challenges of communications and the group dynamic -- if someone always has to work it can be a buzzkill for others.  I get this question a lot.  So while it's possible, really think about how much you would want to work if you joined us.

Finally, we do enjoy a good time.  You can see this in our videos.  But we have a zero tolerance policy while sailing.  Alcohol or drugs have no place whatsoever while underway.  If you are cool with that, then you don't have to worry about being thrown off the boat in some remote location.

So, with that gentle admonishment, if you want to discuss with us, contact us and let us know as much about you as possible.  Send a video if you can.  Then we will reach back out to you so we can all meet and see if it's a good match . It's that simple.

Go for it.  You won't regret it.
