Though there is still some debate, the length of the yacht is the typical differentiator between a motor yacht (50ft to 80 or 100ft), a superyacht (80 or 100ft to about 200ft), and a megayacht is generally 200ft and greater. All megayachts are superyachts, but not all superyachts are megayachts. Superyachts can be power or sail, or motorsailers that run on both power and sail.

They can be monohulled or multihulled, with multiple decks, and have quarters for lots of crew! They can be highly customized yachts, or semi-custom and production builds, though the larger yachts are almost always built-to-order bespoke vessels and built by well-established shipyards. Today’s superyacht shipyards utilize state-of-the-art construction methods, materials, and technologies. Hulls and exteriors are designed and engineered by the world’s top naval architects and interiors are designed by renowned interior design firms to produce award-winning, innovative yachts that are stunningly beautiful, opulently luxurious, and built and engineered to the highest standards of maritime certifications for safe, comfortable transoceanic voyages.

A subset of the superyacht is the expedition/explorer yacht, also known as sport utility vessels. Although they share many of the same design features and capabilities of superyachts, such as long-range cruising, a luxurious interior, and ability to garage a lot of “toys” and tenders, they are built with the features needed to fulfill their special purpose. SUV and Explorer/Expedition yachts are typically built with a full-displacement hull and deep-Vee draft for the highest seaworthiness to provide safety and comfort in extreme weather conditions and in remote locations. They often have ice-class certifications for polar expeditions, and some have been used for scientific research expeditions. Superyacht builder, Amels’ SeaXplorer and Oceanco’s ESQUEL are recently built expedition superyachts. Feadship has also recently built a modern expedition yacht and Abeking & Rasmussen’s expedition yacht features a SWATH hull (small waterplane area twin hull), as owners seek greater adventure in more remote parts.

Another major trend in superyacht design and engineering is for sustainability and reducing environmental impacts. Most superyacht builders today have developed and implemented fuel efficient hybrid propulsion systems, such as diesel-electric, sail-electric, solar power with engine shut-down periods, along with reduction in facility emissions, developing hybrid methanol fuel cells that emit steam, reducing noise pollution, and implementing waste recycling, as a few examples. Many owners, designers, and builders are concerned with the sustainability of natural materials used to create the beautiful interiors, especially rare woods, and are utilizing high-tech architectural films (such as 3M™’s Di-Noc™ Architectural Finishes) that are exquisitely realistic or fantastical surface wraps that are highly versatile, easily installed, reparable, and sanitizable. The owner’s suite is typically palatial and private, and located on the main deck.

The exteriors are often designed for privacy, especially the megayachts, where the voluminous interior space features opulent salons, entertaining and dining areas with wet bars, magnificent accommodations, and more as specified by the owner. Some display the owner’s valuable art collections, have swimming pools with waterfalls or glass bottoms or can transform to a dance floor for DJ dance parties, spas, Jacuzzis, saunas, bowling alleys, paddle tennis courts, fitness centers, game rooms, screening rooms and other theatrical entertainment systems, heliports, luxury tenders, sportfish boats, submersibles, jet skis, scuba equipment, stern beach club/cabana, side balconies and tender garages, and much more. Some have a shadow support vessel for extra crew, provisions, extra guest accommodations, etc. and security escort vessels. They are optimized with the most sophisticated electronics and systems, and redundant equipment and machinery to support lengthy stays at sea.

Some superyachts are available for charter, offering the sumptuous lifestyle of the world’s wealthiest elite. Miami, St Barts (where New Year celebrations are legendary), the Azores and Balearic Islands, Sardinia, the Maldives, French and Italian Rivieras, Greek Isles, and the Adriatic are just a few popular destination ports.

Turkey has a long tradition of maritime construction and is especially known for its wooden motorsailer gulets that are very popular for coastal charters with their vast deck space, interior facilities, and fuel efficiency, able to run on both sail and diesel power, though they don’t truly fall in the private luxury superyacht category. Turkey’s shipyards are also constructing semi-custom and production superyachts—Turquoise Yachts, Alia Yachts, Numarine, Bering Yachts, and AvA Yachts (Kando 110 Series explorer yacht) are some of the more well-known builders. Astondoa is a family-run Spanish shipyard with a 100+ year shipbuilding heritage currently featuring its Century line of luxury built-to-order, customizable superyachts 100 to 125ft in length.

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — A Montana rancher illegally used tissue and testicles from wild sheep killed by hunters in central Asia and the U.S. to breed “giant” hybrid sheep for sale to private hunting preserves in Texas, according to court documents and federal prosecutors.

Arthur “Jack” Schubarth, 80, of Vaughn, Montana pleaded guilty to felony charges of wildlife trafficking and conspiracy to traffic wildlife during an appearance Tuesday before a federal judge in Great Falls. Each count carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Court documents describe a yearslong conspiracy, beginning in 2013, in which Schubarth and at least five other people sought to create “giant sheep hybrids” by cross-breeding different species. Their goal was to garner high prices from hunting preserves where people shoot captive trophy game animals for a fee.

Using biological tissue obtained from a hunter who killed a wild sheep in Kyrgyzstan belonging to the world’s largest species of the animals — Marco Polo argali sheep — Schubarth procured cloned embryos of the animal from a lab, according to court documents.

Federal prosecutors say a Montana rancher illegally used tissue and testicles from wild sheep that were killed by hunters in central Asia and the U.S. to breed “giant” sheep hybrids for sale to private hunting preserves in Texas. AP’s Lisa Dwyer reports.

The embryos were later implanted in a ewe, resulting in a pure Marco Polo argali sheep that Schubert named “Montana Mountain King,” the documents show. Semen from Montana Mountain King was used to artificially impregnate other ewes to create a larger and more valuable species of sheep, including one offspring that he reached an agreement to sell to two people in Texas for $10,000, according to the documents.

Male argali sheep can top 300 pounds with horns up to 5 feet long, according to officials, making them prized among some hunters. They are protected under international convention as a threatened species and outlawed for import into Montana to protect native sheep from disease and hybridization.

A person who was not named in court documents shipped 74 ewes of a prohibited sheep species from Minnesota to Schubarth’s ranch to be artificially inseminated with Montana Mountain King semen, the documents show. Offspring that had only a portion of the central Asian sheep’s genetics sold for lesser amounts.

In 2019, Schubarth paid $400 to a hunting guide for testicles from a trophy-sized Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep killed in Montana. Schubarth extracted semen from bighorn sheep testicles and used it to breed large bighorn sheep and sheep crossbred with the argali species, the documents show.

Assistant U.S. Attorney General Todd Kim described Schubarth’s actions as “an audacious scheme to create massive hybrid sheep species to be sold and hunted as trophies.” Kim said the defendant violated the Lacey Act that restricts wildlife trafficking and prohibits the sale of falsely labeled wildlife.

Schubarth said when reached by telephone on Wednesday that his attorney had advised him not to talk about the case.

“I would love to talk about it but can’t do it now,” he said. His attorney, Jason Holden, did not immediately respond to telephone messages seeking comment.

Authorities agreed under the terms of a plea deal not to pursue further charges against the defendant pending his cooperation in the government’s ongoing investigation in the wildlife trafficking case.

Montana Mountain King is in the custody of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, according to Department of Justice spokesperson Matthew Nies. As part of the plea deal, Schubert agreed to quarantine any other sheep containing Marco Polo argali genetics and any bighorn sheep that were harvested from the wild.

The deal also allows federal wildlife officials to inspect and, if needed, neuter the animals.

Captive animal facilities where game species can be raised and hunted were banned in Montana under a 2000 ballot initiative. But they remain legal in some other states.

Schubarth’s 215-acre ranch is state-licensed as an alternative livestock facility, said Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks spokesperson Greg Lemon. It was grandfathered in when the 2000 ballot initiative passed and has continued to operate, although hunting is prohibited, Lemon said.

Sentencing for Schubarth is set for July 11 before U.S. District Judge Brian Morris.

Russia Maps Show 25% of Moscow Without Power Amid Winter Freeze 'Emergency'

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the nationalization of an ammunition plant in Moscow after a mechanical failure caused tens of thousands of Muscovites to lose heat and water amid freezing temperatures beginning last week.

On January 4, a heating main burst at the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant in the town of Podolsk, which is around 30 miles south of central Moscow. Since then, tens of thousands of Russians are reported to have no heating in their homes in the Moscow region amid subzero temperatures.

Affected areas include the cities of Khimki, Balashikha, Lobnya, Lyubertsy, Podolsk, Chekhov, Naro-Fominsk, and Podolsk, a map published by a Russian Telegram channel and shared on other social media sites shows.

Other Russian media outlets reported that in Moscow, residents of Balashikha, Elektrostal, Solnechnogorsk, Dmitrov, Domodedovo, Troitsk, Taldom, Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Krasnogorsk, Pushkino, Ramenskoye, Voskresensk, Losino-Petrovsky, and Selyatino are also without power.

That means that in total, more than a quarter of Moscow's cities have been hit with power outages and a lack of heating.

Newsweek has contacted Russia's Foreign Ministry for comment via email.

Many residents have taken to publishing video appeals on social media to complain about their freezing conditions. In one clip, people living in Moscow say that they are left with no choice but to warm their homes with gas stoves, heaters, and "whatever else we can find." Others said they are lighting fires in the streets to keep warm.

Andrei Vorobyov, governor of the Moscow region, announced on Tuesday that Putin ordered the ammunition plant to be nationalized because two of its owners have been "located abroad." He didn't name the individuals.

"We received the right to take control of this boiler house within the framework of an emergency," Vorobiev said, adding that the plant's boiler room was managed "very poorly" and there was "virtually no qualified competent personnel."

Russia's Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case over Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant not meeting safety requirements.

On Tuesday, the committee said that because of the incident, the deputy head of Podolsk's administration, the head of the plant's boiler house, and the general director of the ammunition plant had been detained.

Residents of Selyatino have described the situation as "some kind of struggle for survival," Russian Telegram channel ASTRA reported.

Power outages have also struck St. Petersburg, Rostov, Volgograd, Voronezh, Primorsky Territory, and Yekaterinburg.

R esidents across the Moscow suburbs are besieged by a heating problem, for which they plead direct intervention from President Vladimir Putin. These individuals have yet to experience any semblance of home heating since winter started due to a dwindling supply of heating oil. The issue, one largely avoided by local authority communication, has left residents desperate to the point of directly appealing to the president.

While plots have been uncovered to disrupt Ukraine's infrastructure for a second consecutive winter, thus depriving civilians of heating, it seems Russians are now mired in their crisis. Irony drips from the fact that those under Putin's leadership are looking to cause turmoil in Ukraine, yet at home, they face a similar predicament.

Many dwellings within the Moscow agglomeration are presently without heat. The capital's residents are desperate, directly appealing to President Putin due to a perceived lack of alternate avenues for assistance. The absence of suitable heating functionality since winter commenced pushes them towards desperation with no relief in sight.

This seems improbable, but in Russia, it appears that anything can happen.

It remains uncertain if Vladimir Putin is actively addressing the heating crisis. Some experts suggest that Russia's heating oil reserves are depleting, which negatively affects residents' quality of life. Plagued by cold radiators and plummeting winter temperatures, these citizens have directly addressed their pleas to their head of state.

This heating crisis is happening in Elektrostal, a town approximately 71 miles from Moscow.

Ironically, Russia has constantly aimed to destroy the Ukrainian infrastructure since war broke out, deliberately trying to leave Ukrainians without heating during the harsh winters, aiming to break their strong will. It's an irony they now struggle with a domestic heating crisis, particularly near Moscow, their largest and most pivotal city.

Desperate individuals are reaching out to Vladimir Putin. They question his knowledge of the heating infrastructure conditions in the Moscow suburbs and the dire situations residents face there. Sundown brings no relief from the harsh Russian winter and without heating, their houses turn cold. With elections nearing, more and more residents find themselves reaching out directly to their president.

"Since winter's start, we've been without heating. This has been a yearly occurrence for the past three years. Despite paying for heating, we don't have enough. We implore you, help us!" - these are the desperate pleas from the heavily dressed populace dealing with the Russian winter conditions.

Experts attribute the heating oil shortage to international sanctions and surging demands for diesel fuel, pivotal to military operations. Russia now grapples with a dearth of raw materials essential for boiler and heating plant operation. As supplies dwindle, houses grow cold with little hope of any immediate corrective intervention.

It would be adequate if the war ceased, residents were prioritized, and attention accorded to their welfare.
