Regarded by many as the ‘driving licence' for powerboats, our RYA Powerboat Level 2 course offers a thorough introduction to powerboat handling.

This certificate can also be exchanged for the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) for vessels up to 10 m / 33 ft. The ICC is only available to people aged 16 years+ who are either British Residents or British Passport holders. We also offer the CEVNI (European inland waterways theory) test FREE of charge to anyone taking a practical course with us.
There is a direct assessment option for those students with at least one seasons prior experience and is only available on a one instructor per student basis.

Plymouth Sailing School and Plymouth Powerboating has courses running throughout the year, the next couple of months course dates are listed above however most of the year has already been planned. Please contact us for details of dates not listed, practical courses take place most weeks and weekends from March through to November and less frequently from November to February.
Provides the skills and background knowledge needed by the competent powerboat driver and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence. It aims to teach boat handling and seamanship in powerboats. It focuses on low speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planing speed, and collision regulations. The course can be taken at an inland or coastal location. It may be conducted in a variety of boat types, both planing and displacement. The certificate issued will be endorsed to show the type of boat in which the training took place.

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course is one of the most popular courses we run. This course, also called Powerboat Handling Level 2 or PBL2, is a two-day course that covers all the theory and practical aspects of using a powerboat.
After you have got your certificate, you can then apply for your International Certificate of Competence (ICC).
When you take the PBL2 course with Duck-2-Water, qualified RYA instructors will provide training on a modern and fully-equipped powerboat. Your instructor will cover the following topics with you during your 2 days with him or her:
- Launching and recovery

- Securing to a buoy
- Leaving and coming alongside
- Man overboard
What Does The Powerboat Level 2 Course Cover?
The RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course takes place over two consecutive days at our training school near Plymouth. On the first day, you will learn about the theory aspect of powerboats. This covers a lot of information including the different types of powerboats, safety concerns, communication, emergency procedures and lots more.
The second day usually focuses on the practical assessment. This is where you show that you can handle the powerboat and carry out standard manoeuvres on the water.
What are the Course Requirements?
Students of this course must be over 12 years of age. However, you do not require any prior experience of powerboats, nor do you need to take the Powerboat Level 1 Course before signing up to this course.

Before attending a Powerboat Instructor course you will need to have passed the pre-skills assessment, we have an assessment scheduled before the Instructor course starts.
The first two days of the Powerboat Instructor course look at how to best teach power boat syllabus and teaching technique. Candidates will be teaching parts of the syllabus under guidance. The last day consists of the moderation of the course by a second trainer. Candidates will continue the same pattern, but with another trainer to check consistency of the course and to give a second look at the individuals.
During the course you will be asked to present a short, classroom presentation on a topic you have prepared as well as sessions afloat.

The Power Boat Level II is an essential course for deck crew working in the superyacht industry. It is also advisable for steward/stewardesses, and engineers to hold a powerboat license. This two-day entry-level course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat in a safe and effective manner. The powerboat level II is a requirement for crew wishing to drive a superyacht tender up to 10m.
Course Breakdown
The majority of the course is practical with a short theory classroom session. The theory learning will continue during the practical training and assessment. The powerboat level II usually takes two days to complete, weather permitting. The topics covered are as follows:

- Confined space maneuvering
- Man overboard procedure

Powerboat Level 2 Certificate Outcome:
Apart from providing a strong base upon which powerboat handling skills can be built, the powerboat level 2 course is the basis for the ICC (International certificate of competence). A commercially endorsed power boat level II certificate can be used to transport guests and passengers, in tenders up to 10m in length.
The RYA Powerboat level II certificate does not have an expiry date.

With our waterside training centre at Turnchapel Wharf, Plymouth and shore-based classroom facility in London, Plymouth Powerboating offers over 20 motor boat and powerboat RYA accredited courses from entry level to instructor training. The Plymouth centre has a dedicated Navigation Simulation room for ECDIS and Radar training as well as a workshop for engineering and Seamanship training, allowing specific and specialised training.
Our waterside location in Plymouth, along with our range of boats, compliments the shore-based aspects of the courses, providing students with all the on-site facilities needed to successfully complete their courses.
