Inter-war superyacht My Fair Lady re-launched

While there has been a great surge in the restoration of large inter-war motor yachts, the superyachts of their day, it is still quite something for two to appear from the same yard after huge rebuilds at around the same time.

The first was the famous GL Watson Atlantide , listed in this year’s Classic Boat Awards shortlist (Restored Powered Vessel over 100ft category). The other is this, My Fair Lady , a 121ft (37m) motor yacht designed and built in 1928 by Camper and Nicholsons with a steel hull and wooden superstructure.

A new owner in 2021 took her to Huisfit (part of the famous Royal Huisman yard) to be brought back to mint and modernised. This included hull repairs, painting, varnish, systems and engine maintenance, tankage replacement or repair, a new main salon, galley and pantry, and various other interior refreshments.

The owner enjoyed a 2022 season after that, then she went back into the shop for an engine room strip, overhaul of the twin Gardners, new gensets, new stabilisers, further hull repairs and an entirely new bridge.

AYS was delighted to be tasked with carrying out works on this classic Camper & Nicholsons motor yacht to help restore her to her glory days. The vessel underwent a haul-out and a full hydro-jet blast of her underwater hull to remove her silicon-based antifoul. We then placed Fair Lady on a barge for transportation to Royal Huisman, where her works continued at the Huisfit facility.

Historical Summary:

My Fair Lady II was designed by Ed Monk Sr. and construction began in a West Vancouver shed in the backyard of Hugh and Rose Libby.  This was only their second attempt at boatbuilding, having built a 19' runabout prior to this project. Construction began in 1959 and was finished in 1961, when she was registered. She is still powered by her original GM 6-53 diesel. The Libby's took her north to Ketchikan, Alaska in 1964, and the current owner retraced his course in 2010. She has been no stranger to the North & Central BC coast ever since. Since purchasing her in 2008, the current owner has refinished the mahogany exterior as well as most of the interior.  Upgrades to the electrical system and electronics have been carried out as well.

My Fair Lady sold by The Sacks Group

Motor yacht My Fair Lady has been sold by The Sacks Group but is set to join the company's charter fleet with a new name and a fresh look.

The sale of the luxury vessel was brokered by The Sacks Group Managing Director Bruce Schattenburg while the central listing broker was Cromwell Littlejohn of Merle Wood & Associates.

Schattenburg said the refitted Pixel would make an “ideal charter yacht”.

“With the new owner’s plans to refit and upgrade her, to hire a seasoned professional charter crew, and to work with The Sacks Group on implementing an aggressive marketing campaign, we anticipate PIXEL will be a highly successful charter operation.” Schattenburg said.

Pixel has four staterooms and will make her charter debut this winter in the Caribbean.

The Sacks Group Yachting Professionals (TSGYP) is based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA, and aim to cater to the four yachting pillars of New Construction, Yacht Brokerage, Charter Marketing, and Luxury Yacht Vacations. The company is best known for its exclusive Try Before You Buy Program; allowing clients to experience first-hand the size and type of yacht they are interested in prior to purchase.

37m Fair Lady completes two-phase refit at Huisfit

The 36.9-metre Fair Lady has completed a comprehensive refit at Huisfit (the refit arm of the Dutch shipyard Royal Huisman ) over two consecutive winters.

Originally built in 1928, the two-phase programme saw her "thoroughly updated while still maintaining her classic looks", according to Huisfit.

Fair Lady was purchased by her new owner in 2021. Refit work began in November 2021, which included hull repairs, hull painting and varnish repairs, as well as maintenance of the main engines, gensets and stabilisers. Interior work included a new main saloon, galley and pantry with updated equipment. Guest cabins were also refurbished and new carpets were installed. The renovations were completed in "just three months" so that the owner would be able to cruise during the spring and summer of 2022.

Fair Lady returned to Huisfit for "phase two" in September 2022. This time around, work encompassed an entirely new bridge, overhauling the twin Gardener main engines and installing new gensets and stabilisers. Further repairs were made to her hull plating, which then necessitated additional hull painting.

"The on-time and successful relaunch of Fair Lady , is the result of intensive and fruitful teamwork among everyone at Huisfit, as well as the thoughtful owner and his representatives,” said Stefan Coronel, Huisfit manager. "Thanks to the owner’s vision to preserve Fair Lady ’s heritage, this classic motor yacht will not become forgotten history. We wish fair winds to Fair Lady ."

This follows Huisfit's two-year rebuild of the 37.3-metre classic sailer Atlantide .

Endorsements | keeping up with the bezoses: mark zuckerberg buys a super yacht, reports say, a report says that zuckerberg’s luxurious new $300 million vessel was originally was commissioned by a russian oligarch who was the target of sanctions imposed after that country’s invasion of ukraine.

Given that Mark Zuckerberg enjoys a respectable 16th place on a list of the world’s richest people, he probably figured it was time for him to acquire one of the ultimate status symbols for the mega-wealthy — a super yacht.

A new report from The Sun said that Zuckerberg is now the proud owner of a $300 million vessel that he has christened “Launchpad.” The 387-foot-long vessel, which comes with a helipad and a $30 million companion boat, was seen docked this week at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with its unique chrome finish reflecting in the sun.

This purchase shows, among other things, that the Facebook and Meta founder and CEO has branched out from buying islands and building an underground complex to help him survive the apocalypse. Perhaps, he wants to cruise the Mediterranean this summer and be among the moguls who can play host to Leonardo DiCaprio.

The yacht definitely grants him admission to the watery playgrounds of such multibillionaires as Jeff Bezos, Larry Ellison, Bill Gates and any of the Russian oligarchs who haven’t been the target of sanctions imposed by the United States or its allies over Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

In fact, Zuckerberg reportedly came by Launchpad due to the misfortunes of one of those oligarchs. The yacht originally was commissioned to be built by Vladimir Potanin, one of Russia’s richest men who is on multiple sanctions list, according to a report by Autoevolution.com , a transportation industry site. The yacht was known as Project 1010, and the shipbuilder in the Netherlands was legally barred from delivering it to Potanin when it was completed in 2022, though Autoevolution also said that Potanin was not the yacht’s actual owner.

The Sun reported that the yacht recently received “special permission” to be imported. It has since arrived in the United States, a couple months ahead of Zuckerberg’s 40th birthday on May 14 — which raises the question of whether he meant Launchpad as a birthday gift to himself.

It’s quite a gift: Launchpad can comfortably fit 24 guests aboard. It also requires a crew of 48 and is said to cost $30 million a year for upkeep and usage, according to Superyachtfan.com . But shelling out $30 million for maintenance a year shouldn’t be a problem for Zuckerberg, who reportedly earns between $6 million and $12 million a day, The Sun said.

But as spectacular as Launchpad sounds, super yacht fans might say it’s not as spectacular as Jeff Bezos’s super yacht, Koru. The $500 million sailing vessel features very tall masts, a swimming pool, a helipad and room for a second, smaller yacht. The most noteworthy thing about Koru is that Bezos commissioned a special sculpture to decorate its prow. It’s a “curvaceous winged goddess” that is said to bear a striking resemblance to his fiancee Lauren Sanchez.

The Amazon founder, his wife-to-be and the goddess figurehead spent much of last summer sailing around the Mediterranean, cruising from Spain to Croatia and hosting such famous guests as Katy Perry, Orlando Bloom and Usher. The couple also threw a lavish engagement party off the coast of Positano on Italy’s Amalfi coast, attended by another pack of famous friends, including Kris Jenner, Wendi Murdoch and, yes, Leonardo DiCaprio.
