Richard J Stephenson & Stacie J. Stephenson

Stacie and Richard J Stephenson , both born and raised in the heart of the Midwest, believe that empowerment is a fundamental human right and that the strength of the human spirit knows no bounds. As philanthropists, entrepreneurs, and healthcare professionals, the Stephensons live by this ethic in everything they do. From their leadership of Gateway for Cancer Research , to their tireless support of global poverty, disaster relief, and child welfare organizations, to their commitment to advancing our understanding and treatment of neurological diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, among many other causes, Richard and Stacie are champions of organizations working to empower people with the information, resources, and tools they need to overcome adversity.

Richard and Stacie share both a commitment to fighting cancer and a core belief in patient-centered treatment and care. These are the founding principles of Gateway for Cancer Research, which Richard launched in 1991 to fund clinical trials for all types of cancer. Under his leadership as chairman and with Stacie by his side as a vice chairman , Gateway engages patient representatives at every level of the organization to ensure its investments put patients first, prioritizing clinical trials that enhance quality of life so patients can begin healing, today.

Stacie spearheads Gateway’s largest event – the Cures Gala in Chicago – and she  is also the founder and chairwoman of Gateway’s flagship western region event, Vino con Stelle. Due in part to the successful launch of Vino con Stelle , as well as her passionate support of Childhelp , Celebrity Fight Night , and the American Heart Association’s annual Phoenix Heart Ball , in addition to many others, Stacie was named one of 2018’s most influential people by Arizona Foothills Magazine .

In March 2018, Richard and Stacie received Celebrity Fight Night’s National Humanitarian Award in recognition of their generous and unwavering commitment to the organization, and in celebration of  the many other important causes they support. These include organizations such as the David Foster Foundation, the Andrea Bocelli Foundation, the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands, Wabash College, and the community of Barrington, Illinois, among many others.

Richard is the founder and chairman of Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA), a comprehensive cancer care network of hospitals and outpatient care centers in Atlanta, Chicago, Philadelphia, Phoenix and Tulsa. Prior to founding CTCA®, he enjoyed a career as a successful global merchant banker. Richard graduated in 1962 from Wabash College and, while earning his J.D. degree from Northwestern University, established International Capital Investment Company (ICIC) where he still serves as Chairman.

Stacie is a recognized leader in functional medicine with expertise in integrative, regenerative, anti-aging, and natural medicine modalities. In addition to her functional medicine and anti-aging board certifications, she is a Certified Nutrition Specialist® and doctor of chiropractic. “Dr. Stacie,” as she is known by her patients and friends, is the founder and CEO of a new health and wellness media venture, VibrantDoc , and serves as the Chair of Functional Medicine at Cancer Treatment Centers of America®. She is also a member of the Board for Certification of Nutrition Specialists, American Nutrition Association.

Stacie and Richard reside in Barrington Lakes, Illinois where they are active citizens of the local community. Together, they have made a lasting impact on the local school system, the city’s historical landmarks, and the institutions charged with preserving them.

While their work and philanthropic endeavors have them on the road frequently, the Stephensons remain true Midwesterners at heart, happiest when they are at home in Illinois. Avid equestrians and outdoor sports enthusiasts, Richard and Stacie enjoy western and English riding and are particularly fond of their Haflingers, a horse breed known for its hardiness and chestnut coat. Together with Richard’s five children and their families, all of whom share the same devotion to philanthropy, the Stephensons find time to relax and reenergize during summer weeks spent with friends and family in Leland, Michigan. During the winter months, Stacie and Richard enjoy time in Scottsdale, Arizona, working directly with CTCA’s and Gateway’s western region staff.

Founder and Chairman of Cancer Treatment Centers of America,  Richard J Stephenson, to Receive 2017 Horatio Alger Award Horatio Alger Association names 11 exceptional individuals, each of whom has overcome significant challenges to achieve professional and personal success, to its Member Class of 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C. (December 6, 2016)  –  Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, Inc. , a nonprofit educational organization honoring the achievements of outstanding individuals and encouraging youth to pursue their dreams through higher education, today announced that  Richard J Stephenson, founder and chairman,  Cancer Treatment Centers of America ,  has been selected for membership in the prestigious organization. Mr. Stephenson, widely recognized for his philanthropic efforts, global business leadership, and establishment of a new standard in personalized cancer care, joins 10 other esteemed business and civic leaders from across North America in receiving this honor in 2017. For the last 70 years, the Horatio Alger Award has been annually bestowed upon admirable leaders who have succeeded despite facing adversity, and who are committed to higher education and charitable efforts in their local communities.

Mr. Stephenson grew up in Sheridan, IN, a small farming town of 1,200, and was raised with his brother, Michael, by loving and devoted parents who taught him to understand and follow a morally centered and principled way of life. Much of Mr. Stephenson’s childhood and early adulthood was devoted to caring for his brother, who faced many lifelong health challenges. His dedication to helping those around him remains a driving force behind everything he pursues. An entrepreneur from a very early age, Mr. Stephenson would help his father with his work at a pharmacy and later took on various jobs around town – mowing lawns, collecting trash, distributing milk and delivering newspapers. His business acumen expanded in college, as he created a handyman services and consulting company, hiring college friends as part-time employees. After graduating from Wabash College, he started his own merchant banking firm before receiving his juris doctor degree from Northwestern Law School.

Mr. Stephenson quickly developed a highly successful international merchant banking career, building businesses and employing many thousands around the world. While his business grew, his family always took center stage in his life. When his beloved mother, Mary, endured a lengthy battle with cancer before succumbing to the disease, he witnessed firsthand through her painful journey the failure of healthcare providers to listen to her needs and put her care and concerns first. He noted, also, the lack of comprehensive, compassionate, innovative and integrated treatment options that took the whole person into account, and he vowed to change the face of cancer care in his mother’s memory.

In 1988, he opened his first Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) hospital and committed this new chapter in his life’s work to delivering cancer patients and their families what he aptly coined the Mother Standard ®  of care; the kind of care you would want for your loved one. Today, CTCA is a nationally recognized network of five regional medical centers providing a personalized, clinically outstanding, patient-centered Mother Standard ®  of care throughout the United States.

“My fellow Horatio Alger Members and I are pleased to welcome Richard to the Association,” remarked Byron Trott, president, Horatio Alger Association, and 2011 Horatio Alger Award recipient. “His entrepreneurial spirit and passionate commitment to caring for others are traits that both Scholars and Members can appreciate and strive to emulate. Richard’s entire career has been devoted to helping others rise above a different kind of adversity – cancer – providing them with the support, care and comfort needed to face this life-threatening challenge. We are confident that Richard will lend that same heart and dedication to the Association and we look forward to working alongside him.”

Mr. Stephenson also founded and supports five unique charities in each of the regions where his hospitals are located. The Assistance in Healthcare Foundations provide millions of dollars in important financial support to families in need of simple relief from “everyday” stressful expenses back home ( i.e. rent, food, utilities ). He is a Distinguished Eagle Scout in America, a 33° Scottish Rite Freemason, and a dedicated global philanthropist offering his time, talent and treasure to many non-profit organizations with a focus on liberty, private property, free markets and individual freedom. Additionally, in 1991, Mr. Stephenson created the Gateway for Cancer Research, setting out on a personal quest to transform cancer research and care by empowering patients with integrative therapies and innovative treatment options. Twenty five years, 3,000 patients, 140 breakthrough clinical trials around the world and more than $70 million raised later, his personal quest has become transformative and a beacon of hope for those diagnosed with cancer.

“Receiving the Horatio Alger Award means a great deal to me and my family, and I am grateful,” said Mr. Stephenson. “My mother inspired my career and as a strong supporter of education herself, I know she’d be very proud as I receive this honor. The loving ‘wind beneath my wings,’ my five dynamite children, eight grandchildren, and beautiful wife, Dr. Stacie Stephenson, share in this pride. The Horatio Alger Association is all about lifting people up and providing hope and support during their most challenging times. This has been my life’s mission and I look forward to working with my fellow Members to provide support for young people as they work to overcome adversity in pursuit of their dreams.”

Through its Members, Horatio Alger Association aims to educate young people about the limitless opportunities afforded them by the free-enterprise system. To further this goal, the organization awards scholarships to outstanding high school students who are committed to pursuing higher education and giving back to their communities. Like Association Members, Horatio Alger Scholars have faced significant adversities, but have also displayed unmatched resilience in overcoming their challenges. Since the scholarship program was established in 1984, Horatio Alger Association has provided more than $125 million to students in need. Scholarships are funded solely through the generosity of Association Members, Life Partners and friends.

Mr. Stephenson and the Member Class of 2017 will be formally inducted into the Association on March 30-April 1, 2017, during the Association’s 70 th  Horatio Alger Award Induction Ceremonies in Washington, D.C. The annual three-day event honors the achievements of both Members and National Scholars, affording both groups the opportunity to meet and interact, exchanging stories of hardships and triumphs.

Personal Biography

Richard J Stephenson is the founder and chairman of Cancer Treatment Centers of America ®  (CTCA). He has been Chairman of the Board since the company’s inception in 1988.

Mr. Stephenson was taught by his parents to live a life in accordance with the moral code:

When you see someone who is less well off than yourself, and you are in a unique position to do something about their plight, without harm to self, family or Lord, you simply step into the opportunity and do it. No fuss, no muss, no conversation.

He is a 33° Scottish Rite Freemason, Shriner, Knights Templar, Distinguished Eagle Scout in America, and recipient of the prestigious 2017 Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans , which since 1947 has honored the achievements of admirable leaders who have succeeded despite facing adversity, and who are committed to higher education and charitable efforts in their local and global communities.

Following his mother’s death from cancer, and the painful reality of her lack of hope-fulfilling options, treatment and care, Mr. Stephenson made a promise to change the face of cancer care: “I never wanted to see another cancer patient suffer the agony of living without hope.” Thus, he and his family founded CTCA ®  in 1988 to fulfill that promise and introduced to the world what he aptly coined the Mother Standard ®  of care, the kind of care you would want for your loved one.

During Mr. Stephenson’s tenure as Chairman, CTCA has pioneered and proven the importance of a new paradigm in cancer care that empowers patients and their caregivers by providing them with services and programs they desire, where and when they desire them, in one seamless and comprehensive setting. In this setting, they are offered more innovative, integrated and hopeful options with which to better manage their cancer and enjoy a greatly enhanced quality of life.

CTCA also offers qualified patients a range of clinical trials that may reveal new treatment options supported by scientific and investigational research. CTCA patient satisfaction scores consistently rank among the highest for all cancer care providers in the country.

Prior to founding CTCA, Mr. Stephenson developed a career as a highly successful international merchant banker. He graduated in 1962 from Wabash College and, while earning his J.D. degree from Northwestern University, he established International Capital Investment Company (ICIC), where he still serves as Chairman.

In 1991, Mr. Stephenson founded Gateway for Cancer Research , which he still chairs and supports and which to date has raised more than $80 million to fund more than 150 cutting-edge clinical trials around the world. This nonprofit organization spends 99 cents of every dollar received from public contributions to fund these trials which have changed the course of life and hope for thousands of cancer patients.

Today, the Stephenson family, including his wife, Dr. Stacie Stephenson , and his five children, are all actively and passionately devoted to his mission.

Breaking News

Local news | 2024 illinois primary day election results, local news | cancer center founder asked about new wife’s jewels at divorce trial.

Richard Stephenson, founder of Cancer Treatment Centers of America, left, and his ex-wife, Alicia Stephenson, head into the McHenry County Courthouse on Oct. 17, 2016.

Richard Stephenson, the multimillionaire who founded Cancer Treatment Centers of America, took the stand in his divorce trial Monday and repeatedly responded “I don’t know” when questioned about the ownership of big-ticket items at his disposal.

Stephenson spent most of Monday afternoon on the witness stand in McHenry County court, calmly receiving questions about his finances during his marriage to Alicia Stephenson, and about the cost of jewels purchased for the woman he married in June, months after his union to Alicia was dissolved.

Alicia Stephenson’s lawyer, Elizabeth Felt Wakeman, asked Richard Stephenson the cost and size of his current wife’s engagement ring, as well as the cost of the union ceremony they held in 2014. Wakeman pressed him about who owns a home where he has spent time in Arizona; he said he didn’t know but denied he owned the residence.

Similar questions were asked about several other pieces of jewelry for Stephenson’s new wife, as well as the acquisition of an array of sea vessels, including three yachts, a sailboat and several personal watercraft.

Wakeman pressed Richard Stephenson on how much each item cost, who paid for them and who owns them. To each question he calmly replied: “I don’t know.”

Richard Stephenson’s attorney David Grund objected several times, to which Wakeman replied that it was “positively absurd” that Stephenson wouldn’t know the answers. She accused him of engaging in “gamesmanship.”

But Richard Stephenson sought to explain that he operates several “ventures,” and those ventures own various assets.

“I don’t keep track of these things,” he said.

Seven years after Alicia Stephenson filed for divorce, the former couple has gone to trial over how much she will receive in monthly payments and in other assets, having been unable to come to terms privately. She is seeking $400,000 per month, far more than a prenuptial agreement she signed would provide.

The weeklong trial has so far been a procession of witnesses for Alicia Stephenson — from a dermatologist who performs her Botox treatments to a man who cared for the private planes the couple used — who have provided a glimpse into the no-limits lifestyle the couple led during more than 15 years of marriage before their separation.

Richard Stephenson’s attorneys have sought to show that it was their client who was footing the bill, that many of the fancy parties her friends described were also charity events and that Richard Stephenson has many financial holdings that are, and should remain for the sake of a financial settlement, separate from the couple’s marital property.

Monday morning, a corporate planner testified that she helped produce several lavish parties and charitable events for Alicia and Richard Stephenson over the years that included such performers as the Spinners, the Drifters and Bon Jovi.

Donna Bliss said she had known the couple since before they married. She described Alicia Stephenson as the “spiritual leader” and chairman of the charitable events and galas thrown over the years for the Cancer Treatment Centers’ nonprofit arm, Gateway for Cancer Research.

Bliss said it cost $5,000 for the Drifters and $14,000 for the Spinners to perform at the couple’s wedding in 1991 on their Barrington Hills estate, where the bride received a Porsche.

Grund objected to the testimony saying, “These are not lifestyle expenses that should be factored into lifestyle maintenance. She’s not going to marry Dick again.”

But the testimony continued, and Bliss further said the Stephensons paid $70,000 to have Al Green perform at a wedding of a family member held on their property. Bliss also detailed the 16th birthday party the former couple threw for their daughter, which was held at Brookfield Zoo, included party buses, a DJ and fire spinners and cost $48,000.

Among several other events, Bliss described a $225,000, four-day party thrown for the couple’s fifth wedding anniversary, which included entertainment by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons and Mary Wilson of the Supremes. This event also included a newsletter called “Tudor Oaks Times,” named for their estate and detailing the couple’s life and family.

Bliss also testified that a surprise 40th birthday party Richard Stephenson threw for Alicia for $340,000 included a private backstage meet-and-greet with Jon Bon Jovi for Alicia and 30 of their friends.

Grund pointed out that this birthday party was also a charity event where guests were asked to make donations to cancer research in lieu of birthday gifts. He also noted that Richard Stephenson paid for all of these events.

Also Monday, Wakeman, requested that the trial be suspended, saying she still has not received various financial documents requested from Richard Stephenson’s camp.

While Richard Stephenson has had several lawyers in court representing him each day, Wakeman noted she is Alicia Stephenson’s only attorney and that her client has sought to sell some of her jewelry in order to hire additional counsel.

Grund said all documents requested have been turned over and suggested Wakeman was trying to mislead the court. He also said Richard Stephenson has paid $2.5 million in Alicia Stephenson’s legal fees.

Grund said “this court has bent over backward” in extending time to ensure Alicia Stephenson is “properly prepared” to go to trial.

Judge James Cowlin denied Wakeman’s motion to halt the proceedings. Richard Stephenson’s testimony is expected to continue Tuesday.

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

richard j stephenson yacht

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.
