MAIN Yacht – High-end $65M Superyacht

The MAIN yacht is a 65.0m superyacht built in 2008 and delivered later that year by Codecasa at their shipyard in Viareggio. 

She is the largest yacht ever built by the Italian company, being the first hull in its 65.0m series. She is also in the top 5% by LOA and she is currently sailing under the Italian flag.

MAIN yacht interior

The MAIN yacht’s interior was penned by Italian design house Ortelli Achitetti and the yacht.

A monochromatic palette decorates the inside of the vessel, perfectly matching the natural birchwood and marble.

Armani designed a lot of the furniture and decor in their in-house interiors divisions.

Armani himself insisted on designing the blinds and windows, as he wanted to ensure a panoramic view of the ocean. 

Overall, MAIN features a combination of a minimalist and modern Asian style that can be found all over the ship.

MAIN can easily accommodate 12 guests in seven comfortable suites, one master suite, and six guest cabins.

She is also capable of carrying 14 crew members on board, including the captain of the yacht. 

Some of the luxurious amenities the MAIN yacht has to offer are a large sundeck jacuzzi, cinema, spa pool, indoor gym, and an electric fireplace.

The MAIN yacht features exterior design by Codesa, as well as naval architecture.

Her exterior is built with a steel hull and aluminum superstructure.

The vessel’s sleek appearance was designed to hide all technical details that could “stain” her spotless aesthetic. 

Unlike many others, MAIN was created to camouflage at sea with a dark-green exterior color, according to the owner.

Her unique style was inspired by military vessels.

This 65.0m superyacht has an 11.2m beam, a 3.7m draft, and a volume of 11.47 GT. 

Powered by twin diesel Caterpillar (2,470HP) engines, the MAIN yacht cruises at 14 knots, reaching a maximum speed of 17 knots with a range of 6,910 n/M.

She has a fuel capacity of 160,000 liters. 

She is fitted with zero-speed stabilizers, which make the onboard experience even more comfortable. In 2008, the MAIN yacht received the RINA (Registro Italiano Navale) certification. 

Currently, MAIN is not for sale or available for private charter. However, her current price is $65 million with her annual running cost fluctuating between $6 – $14 million.

As you’ll see in the luxury yacht interiors below, the quality and aesthetics are simply gorgeous. And we merely feature a small handful of such boats. There are thousands and thousands of these worldwide.

Our epic yacht interiors article is split into 5 galleries:  staterooms, guest bedrooms , salons and dinettes, kitchens and bathrooms. We kick off our yacht interiors gallery with the stateroom. When it comes to the primary bedroom on these boats, no expense is spared. They are large, comfortable and stunning in design. These bedrooms are bigger than our primary bedroom.

Yacht Guest Bedrooms (2 Beds)

Many guest bedrooms on a yacht have two beds so that it can accommodate more people. However, they are, as you’ll see below, still very, very luxurious. These are certainly cozy sleeping quarters.

Salon and Dinette Photos

My favorite room on the boat is the salon and/or dinette area. In many cases, the dinette doubles as the living room. Mega yachts have dedicated salons and dining areas. I love these superb lounge designs below in the cabin as well as the upper lounge areas.

I must admit that kitchens on these super yachts are fairly small. I guess the cooking is done by the staff and yacht owners prefer to have more space for bedrooms, deck space and lounge space. That makes sense given there really is limited space. Nevertheless, these kitchens are gorgeous and the yacht designers certainly didn’t skimp with respect to quality.

Most boats dedicate very little space to bathrooms. Not these. The primary bathrooms below are incredible. The smaller bathrooms are guest bathrooms. These luxury yachts are so large and spacious that even the bathrooms are both beautiful and comfortable to use.

Giorgio Armani has been a pioneer in bringing minimalist high-end menswear fashion to the mainstream audience. A living legend, he successfully built his business empire worth $9.53 billion today. As many successful men are known to own yachts , Armani was no different. After visiting others and chartering a few for several years, he decided to design his yacht. The designer believed that none of them suited his style. He concluded that yachts were too white and had flashy designs. As a fan of elegant simplicity, he designed a yacht to let the interior do the talking . Unlike anything seen before, Maìn's design is truly one of a kind.

From creating comfortable yet luxurious rooms to using innovative technology for the amenities, the yacht designed by Giorgio Armani is perfection on water. Let’s take a glimpse inside the $65 million and what truly makes it an elegant home on the water.

Giorgio Armani decided to design the superyacht himself when he needed to own a yacht that would cater to his needs. According to L’Official USA , it took 30 months to create and design the yacht, and it was completed in 2008 with the help of the construction company Codecasa. The 65-meter hull has a unique color scheme, and Armani took it upon himself to design every inch, including the blinds and windows that offer a scenic view of the ocean.

The designer has multiple yachts in his collection, and one of the yachts is called Mariù, which was his mother’s nickname for him. He named his 65-meter yacht Maìn after his mother’s other affectionate nickname, which is a constant reminder for Armani of his humble beginnings in Italy . Armani has mentioned that his mother was an elegant woman, and he has used her approach to create interiors and fashion over the years. In the study of his cabin in Maìn, Armani has a picture of his mother on the desk.

Armani wanted to design the yacht to look like a military boat. As he was in the army during the 1950s, his idea to paint the yacht army green comes from the same roots, as noted by Vogue . As the Maìn is not meant to be flashy, Armani decided to use a camouflage shade to blend the boat and the sea to remain reclusive from the other bright yachts around.

A luxury enterprise in every form, the yacht has crystal glass at the top to give better visibility of the sea. The floors feature natural birchwood, bulkheads, and Venetian blinds. The galley is designed with retro lacquered glass, while the main deck features an electric fireplace. The ceilings are colored in the shades of metal grey, while the other areas are in the shade of army green to echo the exterior.

The overall interior of the yacht looks like it does not have walls. Armani found it challenging to find space to create his designs since most of the work done by Codecasa was under the floors. As mentioned by Yacht Harbor , the vessel has seven cabins that can accommodate 12 people and separate cabins for 14 crew members. Along with the unique color scheme, people on board can enjoy the marble bathrooms, cinema room, and gym. The heart of the yacht is the living room that features decor from Armani Casa. The main deck has two separate areas, the fireplace space and the sitting room. Most of the furniture aboard the Maìn is customized by the Interior Designer specialists at Armani Casa.

Not only does the Maìn offer an unforgettable experience on the boat, but it also ensures a safe passage over the ocean with its potent engine and built. The yacht is equipped with 2 Caterpillar engines that give her a maximum speed of 17 knots. With a volume of 1,147 knots, it has a range of 6,000 miles at 14 knots. It offers enough power for Armani to travel between his favorite homes located in Saint Tropez and the Italian island Pantelleria.

Growing up on the Mediterranean Sea, Armani has always loved the water. While creating the yacht, he arranged spaces that would provide visual freedom. His favorite part of the Maìn is the veranda-attached living space and his cabin that is designed with skillfully crafted paneling that is made from precious materials. The interior of his cabin also features an antique Japanese cabinet, as reported by Boat International .

One of the most prominent aspects of any vessel is the decks. Every luxurious superyacht is always equipped with multiple decks; however, Armani never built decks for Maìn. To not disturb the purity of the design and structure, he removed the characteristics seen in an old ship. The technical parts mainly on display are tucked in the stern garage under the staircase that takes people straight to the water from the yacht.

Giorgio Armani’s superyacht Maìn is an experience in itself. He worked closely with his designers to create a home on the water to design it. The designer is frequently seen aboard the yacht, spending his summer vacations with family and friends. In March 2021, he teamed up with The Italian Sea Group to design a 236-foot yacht that will debut in 2024.

Winch Design

Our list of the best yacht interior designers kicks off with  Winch Design. Originally founded by Andrew Winch and his wife Jane in 1986, at the time it was known as Andrew Winch Designs. It was rebranded as Winch Designs in 2015 but has been one of the UK’s leading superyacht and private jet design studios for over thirty years. Winch Design’s yacht studio is now led by Jim Dixon and the team has created a multitude of extraordinary projects, all of which are highly bespoke and tailored to each client’s specific requests.

One of Winch Design’s most recent yacht projects was the 260 ft M/Y Excellence , which shipbuilder Abeking & Rasmussen say was its “most challenging project to date”. Its owner worked closely with the design studio to create a yacht with interiors inspired by the “Floridian East Cost Deco” style and that felt both personal to him and welcoming to any guest on board. “ Excellence was a very exciting project to be involved with and [she] tested the team to their creative limits,” says senior partner, Ignacio Oliva-Vele.

Terence disdale design.

Based in the UK, Terence Disdale Design is one of the yachting industry’s most respected design studios. The team works on both the interior and exterior design of some of the world’s most incredible yachts, with previous projects including M/Y Eclipse , one of the biggest superyachts in the world. The studio was founded by Terence Disdale, who – despite having no formal training – is one of the most sought-after designers in the industry.

Disdale set up his eponymous studio in 1972 after working for famous designer Jon Bannenberg (Bannenberg’s studio was also where Andrew Winch and Tim Heywood learned their craft). Across his extraordinary 40-year career Disdale and his studio have designed over 100 yachts, including more than 50 superyachts. His wide-ranging design style often follows the mantra of ‘beach house, not penthouse’, with concepts often finding inspiration from the ocean.

Sorgiovanni Designs

Australian yacht designer Sam Sorgiovanni’s career began after he studied Industrial Design and found his first position working for shipbuilder Oceanfast. It was thanks to the experience he gained at this renowned shipbuilder that Sorgiovanni decided to set up his own studio, launching Sorgiovanni Designs in 1997 in Fremantle, Western Australia. The studio has also recently opened an office in Monaco in order to expand its design services to Europe.

Sorgiovanni believes it’s important to “keep one eye on the past” when designing projects, “in order to avoid making the same mistakes” as before. Previous yacht designs that he has worked on include the 390 ft Amana in collaboration with Oceanco, and the exteriors of the 270 ft Secret. When Sorgiovanni is not working on a particular project, he is also traveling the world to consult on yacht designs for clients, working with a variety of suppliers and shipbuilders.

Next up on our list of the best yacht interior designers is Zaniz Studio. The company was founded in New York City by English-American designer Zaniz Jakubowski – who up until recently, had rarely been able to discuss her astounding portfolio of projects due to the NDAs that came with the commissions. The studio has an international reputation for creating iconic and innovative projects, which always have strong attention to detail. As well as designing for both private and commercial yachts, Zaniz Studio works across other industries, including creating theatre sets and residential and commercial interiors.

One of Zaniz Studio’s latest projects – and one it was able to share – was the 350 ft superyacht Luminosity , which went on the market last year for over $266 million. The studio was responsible for both the interior and exterior of Luminosity, which was built by Italian shipyard Benetti. What is most interesting is that the team abandoned the typical format of designing the exterior first, followed by the interior; instead, the superyacht has been designed from the inside out.

Nuvolari Lenard

Well known for its timeless design style, Nuvolari Lenard is one of the largest – and most active – luxury yacht design studios in the world, founded in 1992 by naval architect and mechanical engineer Carlo Nuvolari and stylist Dan Lenard. The studio is based in Italy’s island city, Venice, and draws heavy influence from the city for its classic yacht designs, combining strong architectural lines with a deep passion and understanding for the sea. One of its latest projects was the 465 ft Nord (previously called Project Opus).

Not only is Nuvolari Lenard based in Venice, but it also has a renowned Design Center on the outskirts of the city that hosts architects and designers working on a range of tasks. Inside the Design Center is a scale yacht model workshop that gives designers the opportunity to visualize their concepts and research shapes before confirming a final design. The interior design section of the studio’s Design Center also features a showroom where clients and designers can discuss fabrics and materials.

Patrick Knowles Designs

With decades of experience in the marine industry under his belt, Patrick Knowles is one of America’s top yacht designers. His studio, Patrick Knowles Designs , specializes in custom megayacht and superyacht interiors, as well as designing for private aircraft. The team at Patrick Knowles Design prides themselves on their creativity and a strong commitment to making sure projects are finished on time, while also exceeding expectations.

One of Patrick Knowles Designs’ award-winning projects was a Key West-inspired 206 ft ISA displacement superyacht. The owners requested an interior that felt like a five-star tropical resort; through a design that incorporated vibrant murals of plants and aquatic life, lush fabrics and furnishings, and the use of environmentally friendly, natural materials including bamboo, palm wood and coconut shells, Patrick Knowles delivered. The onboard showcase piece is a 30-foot-tall light fixture constructed from Murano glass that sits within the spiral staircase, joining all three levels.

Our list of the most exclusive yacht interior designers would not be complete without mentioning Tillberg Design of Sweden. Founded in 1964 in Höganäs, the practice has been designing timeless Scandinavian-inspired interiors on board some of the world’s most luxurious vessels for over five decades.

Known for its meticulous craftsmanship, use of quality materials and expert lighting, when it comes to creating beautiful spaces you’re in safe hands with Tillberg Design of Sweden. Perhaps most impressive is the studio’s latest project designing the interiors onboard the gigantic 728-foot superyacht Somnio .

The recently released renderings reveal stunning dream-like rooms expertly blending indoor and outdoor spaces. Future owners that are lucky enough to live on the world’s first residential yacht liner will be given the opportunity to work with the prestigious design firm over three months to create their dream apartment.

Monaco Yacht Show: 7 Yacht Interiors That Will Steal the Show

Running from September 28 through October 1, the Monaco Yacht Show is the highlight of the global boat show circuit. This year’s edition promises to deliver plenty of buzzy debuts, headline-making yacht news, and high-design highlights. There are several new additions to this year’s event in Port Hercules including a sustainability hub and a gadget- and gizmo-filled adventure area , packed with new water toys and flashy supercars —it is Monaco , after all.

For denizens of design, the Yacht Design & Innovation Hub is returning for a second year, with presentations, galleries, and exhibits by yacht architects and designers. But, of course, the big boats steal the show. With yacht interiors that range from the classically nautical to the budget-blowing bonkers, these are the superyachts to have on your radar at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show.

Lürssen, Ahpo

All eyes will be on the whopping 377-feet Ahpo , by Lürssen, when it debuts this year at the Monaco Yacht Show as the largest yacht in the port. Venice-based exterior and interior designer Nuvolari Lenard added plenty of personality and luxury to the vessel with oversized crystal light features, a hammam made of mosaics in the massive wellness area, and a grand staircase at the center of the yacht, crafted to resemble an olive tree.

Feadship, Rock.It

The 198-foot Rock.It is not short on style: Gleaming wood panels with creamy white leather inlays feature throughout; glowing white onyx contrasts with rich black Portoro marble; and the well-dressed owner’s cabin rivals the top suite of an old-world European hotel with a warm wood study and bathroom with a claw-footed tub. The refined design can be attributed to the Netherlands with Dutch shipyard Feadship behind the build and Dutch design studio Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design taking on the interiors.

Modern and laid-back, Come Together is effortlessly cool. 

Amels, Come Together

Built in the Netherlands by Amels with interiors by London-based Winch Design, the 197-foot Come Together has soft and laid-back beach-y vibes with a dose of Southern California cool. Elements like bleached oaks, woven linen fabrics, cabinetry with natural coconut shell, and hair-on-hide leathers all unite to bring the natural world aboard this chic ship.

Crisp and clean, the interiors of Be Cool are to-the-point in a refreshing way. 

Swan 98, Be Cool  

There’s a fleet of around a dozen large sailing yachts on display at this year’s yacht show in the dedicated Sailing Yacht Area. One of the most notable new launches of the bunch is Swan 98 Be Cool  by Finnish shipyard Nautor’s Swan. The clean and crisp interior hull design by Genovese architect Misa Poggi embraces graceful nautical style and Scandinavian practicality with navy linen and cotton fabrics, dark oak, and handsome tobacco-hued leather.

Kokomo ’s interiors will speak to the minimalist.

Packed with cutting-edge green tech and ultralight solar panels, Sunreef’s newest catamaran  Eco 80 will be making waves at this year’s show. However, it’s the interiors of the 80-foot Kokomo (done in-house by Sunreef) that will impress the design lovers. Outfitted in cool and calm shades of white with rattan finishes and eucalyptus veneers, Kokomo is both on-trend and a complete classic.

Abeking & Rasmussen, B2

One of the largest vessels currently on the market, the 281-foot B2 by German yard Abeking & Rasmussen, will be showing off an ultra-chic over-$4-million interior refit just completed in July at this year’s show. Sprawling out over five decks, Winch Design has curated a serene floating sanctuary of indoor-outdoor living, the highlight of which is the main deck’s glass-bottom pool, stationed above the light-filled beach club lounge with fold-down balconies that extend the living space right to the water’s edge.

With dark wood, tubular steel accents, and black furnishings, the interiors of State of Grace could be described as a nautical take on the Bauhaus aesthetic. 

Perini Navi, State of Grace

State of Grace by Italy’s Perini Navi is a gorgeous high-performance sailing sloop. It’s picture-perfect with polished teak decks, an ocean-blue hull, and billowing white sails. Inside is a study in midcentury-modern elegance with a split-level saloon and a spacious and full-beam owner’s suite with a hammam shower.

Inside track: The yacht interior design brands to know this season

Many brands claim to provide comfort and functionality, but few strike the balance with such finesse as Loro Piana. Once Milano

“Veneto is full of artisans and is famous for its furniture, textiles and glassware. It’s very much the fashion here to have everything made by someone local,” explains Allegra Marchiorello. “Every little house in this corner of Italy has its own company in the backyard.” It’s one of the reasons Marchiorello co-founded Once Milano with his long-time friend, linen aficionado Valeria Piovesana Thompson. The house’s Italian-made linen is of the highest quality, made from the longest threads, using flax grown near Milan. The weave is the smoothest, strongest and most absorbent money can buy: cooling in the summer months, cocooning in the winter.

When the company was approached to produce a collaboration with Sanlorenzo , it seemed a very natural fit. “Linen is the perfect material on a boat: it’s light, low-maintenance and understated, yet incredibly luxurious,” says Piovesana Thompson. “That’s the beauty of it,” agrees Marchiorello. “It never looks contrived. It’s also all custom-made — we’ve worked with clients to create bespoke finishes and have included their monograms.”

Designing a collection for boats proved an interesting challenge. “It’s quite different to designing for a home,” says Marchiorello. “For starters, the water is such a central element, and the space you’re working with is contained. We wanted to create something that was sophisticated yet highly refined.” The brand’s covetable Piping Collection was born from this collaboration, and Once Milano enjoys a good working relationship with Jonathan Fawcett, one of the UK’s leading luxury supplier to superyachts.

As part of luxury Italian linen house Pratesi’s ambitious five-year plan towards international expansion, it has launched a new range specifically for yachts. The collection of sumptuous bedding, table linens and towels is made to order, with customisation options including bespoke monogramming available.

Run by the fourth generation of the Pratesi family, the house is focused on delivering faultless craftsmanship, drawing on the skill of its team of designers, weavers and embroiderers, who create the linen in its Florence headquarters. COO and future CEO Simone Bocchio and president Federica Pratesi bring a personal insight into the yachting industry to the production of timeless, elegant linens.

Molteni&C

Architect, industrial designer, artist and publisher, Gio Ponti was a giant of 20th century Italian design. During his long and fruitful career, Ponti developed an all-encompassing approach to his work, creating not just the structure of a building but also conceiving its entire interior scheme, from furnishings to lighting fixtures. His finest achievements include the Pirelli Tower — Milan’s first modern skyscraper — and the distinctive, castle-like Denver Art Museum.

One of Ponti’s most enduringly popular designs, however, is something altogether closer to home. The 1957 Via Dezza chair is an angular, upholstered armchair built on a linear metal frame. It was created by Ponti along with the entire furnishings of his self-designed Milan home (pictured) from which it takes its name.

FM Architettura d’Interni

“All projects start as dreams in the mind of an owner.” This is the philosophy of the Italian company that has designed the interiors of some of the world’s finest superyachts and most luxurious hotel suites and palatial private homes. FM Architettura d’Interni was founded by the architect Francesca Muzio and the interior designer Maria Silvia Orlandini in 2009, and in a few short years, has amassed an incredibly impressive portfolio of clients in all corners of the world.

The company made its name by creating yacht interiors that are effortlessly elegant, yet at the same time have an inviting, natural feel. As its reputation grew, it was commissioned for high-profile interior design projects such as the luxurious Presidential Suite of Shangri-La at The Shard, London - along with other Shangri-La properties in China and the Philippines — as well as premium residential properties stretching from Bahrain to Beverly Hills.

Despite the long list of people lining up to benefit from their expertise, Muzio and Orlandini never forget the views of the most important person in any project: the owner. Tai Ping has been making and supplying one-of-a-kind carpets to discerning clients all over the world for 50 years. Its first-ever commission, from the Grauman’s Theatre in Los Angeles, was for a carpet so large it needed to be constructed in a tent erected outside the factory. Today, the Hong Kong-headquartered company has five distinct divisions and showrooms across Europe, North America and Asia.

New for 2016 is a collaboration with award-winning florist Jeff Leatham. The artistic director at Paris’s Four Seasons Hotel Georges V, Leatham is famed for creating stunning floral installations and bouquets for everyone from the Dalai Lama to Oprah Winfrey.

The Bloom collection comprises 14 handmade wool-and-silk rugs that were inspired by geometric shapes and the organic forms of solid, liquid and vapour. Each of the custom-made designs explodes with colour, with even Leatham admitting to feeling “chills” when he saw them realised for the first time.

Adrian Sassoon

Back in 2012, when Frank Pollaro was commissioned to create a desk for Brad Pitt’s château in the South of France, little did he know a new partnership was about to be forged. On delivering the piece, he noticed the actor’s sketchbook was full of furniture sketches and suggested they make them a reality.

The Pitt-Pollaro Collection is designed by Pitt and crafted by Pollaro. It demonstrates the attention to detail the likes of Robert De Niro have sought out and majors in art deco-inspired pieces in opulent materials, such as the decadent Statuario Venato marble Toi et Moi bath (above, in a limited edition of three), which can accommodate two well-heeled people. Should you require further credentials, Pollaro has designed yacht furniture for tech giant Larry Ellison, and Pitt-Pollaro was one to the top luxury and interiors brands at the Monaco Yacht Show .

6 Architects That Are Now Creating Designs for Superyachts

<p>Exciting yacht design doesn’t require reinventing the wheel. But a fresh view always helps. That’s why more yacht owners are looking for land-based architects and designers for their new build and refit interiors, preferring a cross-pollination of ideas over the tried and true.</p> <p>The first owner to shy away from the traditional yacht designer set was billionaire Lukas Lundin, who tasked Italian architect Cristina Gherardi Benardeau to design the interior of the 274-foot Savannah. The Feadship, launched in 2015, is largely remembered as the first superyacht with a hybrid propulsion package. But the interior is just as radical.</p> <p>Benardeau, a designer of retail space for Giorgio Armani and Christian Dior Couture, gave the 262-foot yacht the world’s first “Nemo lounge,” or a bubble in the hull where the owners and guests could see underwater.  It also featured what looked like a floating superstructure, employing long strips of tinted glass inspired by skyscrapers. (The same visual trick was employed later in Oceanco’s 361-foot Jubilee.) Savannah was the first boat to receive full metallic exterior paint job to blend in with the ocean surroundings—an idea later seen on superyacht Kensho, when it delivered in 2022.</p> <p>Since then, a number of owners and boatbuilders have employed residential architects to do interior designs, as well as offer exterior flourishes (though naval architects complete the structures and running surfaces.) Rome architect Achille Salvagni has done projects for Rossinavi and Azimut, Lord Norman Foster created a series that later became the YachtPlus fleet, Lazzarini & Pickering designed the Benetti Motopanfilo 37M, and next year, Matteo Thun & Antonio Rodriguez will show their talents on Azimut’s SeaDeck Series.</p> <p>Even residential stalwarts like Zaha Hadid Architects can’t help but experiment with nautical projects. Following the 2016 reveal of the firm’s Unique Circle Yachts series, the studio collaborated with Vitruvius Yachts this year on Britain’s new “royal yacht” project. And more recently, the architects unveiled concept renderings for Oneiric, a proposed catamaran in collaboration with Italian shipyard Rossinavi.</p> <p>From skyscraper to sea, here are six yachts designed by mainstream architects.</p>

And more recently, the architects unveiled concept renderings for Oneiric, a proposed catamaran in collaboration with Italian shipyard Rossinavi.

From skyscraper to sea, here are six yachts designed by mainstream architects.

<p>Architect Roberto Palomba has been designing houses for decades. His Milan-based studio, Palomba Serafini Associati, includes the Italian Consulate in Detroit, home décor and even tableware, among its past projects. His first yacht is the <a href="https://robbreport.com/motors/marine/amer-41-explorer-superyacht-cool-innovations-1234794265/">Amer</a> F100, which features a unique “Glass Cabin” as the main salon. It was designed in partnership with Ludovica Serafini. “My aim was to change some standard boat elements to create something completely different,” Palomba told <em>Robb Report</em> during the yacht’s world debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival. “Certainly, our perspective offers a fresh look, an architectural vision rooted in the world of architecture and interior design, translated into the realm of yacht design.” The Glass Cabin is an architectural glass box that encases the main salon and formal dining area with windows that are larger than other yachts with similar dimensions. The garden creates openness, light and a continuous connection with the sea. Continuing the theme, reflective surfaces are used on the walls and ceiling across all social areas to bring more light in, while stairs joining the main deck to the bridge are topped by more glass, opening the heart of the yacht to blue skies.</p>

Amer F100, Architect Roberto Palomba

He looked beyond the pool of yachting talent for a designer who could create a signature statement inside the 246-foot Admiral. The owner eventually decided on Paris design house Jouin Manku, an experienced architecture and industrial design studio, without a single yacht to its name. Co-founder Sanjit Manku took the design brief and ran with it, eschewing traditional yachting layouts for high-volume and big sea views. Variations on the established interiors include lofty 8.9-foot-tall ceilings, open-plan cabin layouts (where the bathrooms are on display) and locating the owner’s salon—more akin to an observation lounge—to the upper deck where the captains’ wheelhouse is traditionally located.  “We drew on our restaurant design experience to create an ambience and furniture that is practical yet opulent,” Manku told <em>Robb Report</em>. “The dining chairs have ski feet that make it easy for guests to slide in and out, and we incorporated flattering lighting rather than ceiling spotlights.” The end result is a stunning, personalized interior that is unique in yachting. </p>

‘Kensho,’ Jouin Manku

Kensho ‘s owner was a first-time yacht buyer who wanted a one-of-a-kind vessel. He looked beyond the pool of yachting talent for a designer who could create a signature statement inside the 246-foot Admiral. The owner eventually decided on Paris design house Jouin Manku, an experienced architecture and industrial design studio, without a single yacht to its name. Co-founder Sanjit Manku took the design brief and ran with it, eschewing traditional yachting layouts for high-volume and big sea views. <p>Refits are also getting design overhauls by non-yacht designers. Lürssen’s 318-foot <a href="https://robbreport.com/motors/marine/superyacht-carinthia-vii-refit-lurssen-1235333612/"><em>Carinthia VII</em></a>, first delivered in 2002 and designed by Tim Heywood, was sold in 2022 to a new owner. He called on Italian studio Bizzozero Cassina Architects for what turned out to be a major refit in a nearly record 300 days. The architectural studio is experienced in real estate, including a few of the owner’s private properties. But yacht refits are a recent addition to its portfolio. “The key to any project’s success is to know the person, their lifestyle and the way they think,” architect Paolo Bizzozero said. “Only with these three ingredients can you remedy a truly bespoke environment that works for them and for their life.” Key additions include a 1,334-sq. ft. sundeck, with a large dining table and teppanyaki grill. Equally impressive was the 39-foot-long glass-paneled swimming pool on the main deck (with two large televisions to view live sports), and a 968-sq. ft. air-conditioned gym on the bridge deck that also serves as a winter garden.</p>

Bentley fans who dream of a book-matched yacht interior might look closely at the 67-foot Contest 67CS.  Commissioned by a private client and launched in November, it is the first collaboration between Bentley and Contest Yachts. with all the design flair Bentley could bring to a yacht. Conceived to match the luxe design of a custom continental GT coupe, the sailboat features the same materials, motifs and craftsmanship on its cars and home designs, including the same hand-stitching found on the Bentley steering wheel and the yacht’s Malvern Chair. Most significantly, Burdi reversed the central stairwell and tucked it into the perimeter of the yacht to create a wider walkthrough and, in so doing, a work of art.</p>

He had clear ideas about the functional layout of the boat, so he appointed commercial design firm Burdifilek to realize that vision. That is apparent in areas like the the lower-deck staterooms where the bulkheads hug the curve of the hull. A Closer Look at Giorgio Armani's Yacht "Main"

Of all the yachts sailing, perhaps one of the most elegant is Giorgio Armani's Yacht "Main." The sleek deep green (bordering on black) vessel is, after all, owned by fashion designer Giorgio Armani. The iconic Main is a study in decadence and grandeur. If you're going to have a sixty million dollar home on the water and run a fashion empire, it's vital to adorn it in the most excellent and tasteful decor, which is exactly what Armani did. We can only imagine what it would be like to spend our time out at sea in a ship like Main.

Italian Yachtmaking at its Finest

The outstanding Codecasa went all out in creating this one of a kind ship for Armani. It was conceived and built in their Viareggio, Italy shipyard. They worked closely with Georgio himself who proudly had a hand in designing every aspect of the Main over the course of the thirty-month build. The whole interior is based on the concept of balance and harmony in a minimalist style. It succeeds beautifully, but we'd never expect less from Armani. After all, he is one of the tastemakers of the world, paving the future of beauty. On the outside, even the color of the Main is made to blend in with its surroundings. The dark green was specially chosen to camouflage her at sea. Armani himself has noted that the ocean is rarely the idyllic Carribean blue we think of for pictures, and his ship is at one with her backdrop. The aesthetic is both attractive and highly functional, affording the designer the peace and tranquility he can't have in daily city life.

While there's no doubt about Codecasa's experience and skill at making superyachts, Georgio Armani did have a couple of requests they found slightly challenging. It might not seem like curtains are a big deal in the grand scheme of designing the interior of a yacht, but making windows with louvered blinds that line-up Smoothly to give a perfect panoramic view is harder then it sounds. The second request was harder still. Armani wanted one of the decks to slide outward where the Saloon is located to give a larger space. Naturally, they rose to the challenge. As any millionaire fashion mogul can tell you, sometimes it's all about the fine details. This is never truer than when you're creating a minimalist appearance. A space that isn't visually cluttered draws the eye to its smooth lines, color choices, and pleasing shapes. The decking and wood details are all attractively laid out to give the most space without taking your focus off whatever the host and designer have in mind. It's truly an ingenious way to work, stage a fashion show, or even have a quiet meal with friends.

The Main houses fourteen crew members to keep her running smoothly. In addition to his master suite, there are six stunning cabins for guests, and it can accommodate up to twelve people in luxuriant style. Most of the interior mirrors the green on the outside, paired with pale birch and metal grey ceilings to carry the same essential mood as you go from one end to the other. However, each of the guest cabins has its own singular style with rich fabrics and color story for the discerning guests' comfort and pleasure. A spiral staircase shows off the classic handsomeness of pale wood and timeless design as well as any part of the pleasing-to-the-eye space. Something about the natural flow of the wood and contrasting walls is especially lovely without even trying.

The Veranda is the perfect place to catch some sun or gather around to watch the sunset. It's outfitted for both informal and formal dining, and Armani's own interiors division created all the furniture. Some yacht owners go for gold filigree and intricately patterned artworks along the walls. Armani's favorite features on the other hand, are the outdoor space and an extraordinary, utterly breathtaking antique Japanese cabinet installed in his quarters. For the fitness conscious, Main has a private indoor gym. Doubtless, after a few lavish meals, the models and celebs he has for guests will want to work up a sweat and keep their perfect figures. No need to worry about overheating though because the whole ship has air conditioning. After a sumptuous meal and a solid workout, the hot tub is a great place to relax and unwind. For those seeking a more cooling dip without the need for scuba gear, the pool is available. What luxury yacht would be complete without a private cinema for viewing the Cannes films the designer is so fond of?

Final Thoughts

We don't have a yacht, but in our dreams, Armani would be the designer if we did. His impeccable sense of elegant and understated style is relaxing merely to look on. The smooth, perfect lines and simple yet bold color choices are simultaneously exotic and comforting. We could stare at The Main for ages just perusing images of its sophisticated appointments and sumptuously serene bearing. 7 Trends in Sailing Yacht Interior Design

There’s some irony when it comes to looking at the hottest interior design trends for custom sailing yachts: much of the inspiration for today’s designs draw from the past – combined with modern innovation.

Interior designs that emphasize simplicity, balance, and natural materials are hardly revolutionary.  Quite the opposite.  But there is a new take and balance between old and new, iconic and innovative, that seems to provide the perfect balance for creating incredible interior spaces.

We’re exploring the top 7 trends in custom yacht design for 2023.

Natural Light and Connection Between Interior and Exterior Spaces

The use of larger windows is a trend that has been gaining popularity in yacht design in recent years, as yacht owners increasingly want to maximize their views of the surrounding environment and bring more natural light into their living spaces.

One way that yacht designers are incorporating larger windows is by using high-strength glass materials that can withstand the harsh marine environment. For example, tempered glass or laminated glass with multiple layers can provide the necessary strength and durability to withstand the wind, waves, and impact from flying debris.

In addition to using strong glass materials, yacht designers are also using innovative engineering techniques to maximize the size and placement of windows. Lightweight structural materials such as carbon fiber and titanium in the yacht’s construction, allow for larger windows without compromising the yacht’s structural integrity. In the photo of ANNA, above, the white-painted transverse structural knees are part of a carbon fabrication that strengthens the cabin and carries the mainsheet loads while blending into the classic joinery.

 M ulti Functionality and Flex Spaces

The design for 68-ft CIRRUS comes from blending 40’s & 50’s era style. The large saloon is designed to provide long-term comfort and versatility with innovative vertical storage and a vaulted ceiling that includes panoramic angled glass as well as overhead skylights. Owners are spending more time aboard their vessels and are adding to the list demands and programmatic needs. These include home-office, fitness centers, gourmet kitchens, and gathering places for family and friends to spend longer durations of time together.

Because space is at a premium on a yacht, designers are creating multi-functional spaces that can serve multiple purposes. For example, a seating area that can be converted into a bed or a dining table that can be lowered to create additional seating. Clever storage solutions are also being incorporated into yacht design to make the most of available space.

Old World Charm Meets Modern Sensibilities: Spirit of Tradition

Yacht designers have always had a particular reverence for heritage and history.  The notion of heading out to sea conjures images of bygone eras past.  Capturing that essence requires a balance that avoids becoming kitsch or contrived.  While mid-century design may be considered the hot design trend of 2023, as designers steeped in a Spirit of Tradition design philosophy, we feel we’ve never left the genre.

Spirit of Tradition designs embody some historically identifiable link, particularly expressed in the shape and aesthetic exhibited in the design form of the hull and superstructure. Equally important, a Spirit of Tradition vessel must embrace modern development in materials, construction methods, mechanical systems and naval architecture science. Without the Spirit in development, we’re left with only Tradition.

Natural Materials

Yacht owners by their very nature are drawn to water and the natural world, so it makes sense to incorporate natural elements such as wood, stone, and other organic materials in design. These materials create a sense of warmth and connect the interior spaces to the natural surroundings.

As experts in wooden boat design, we have long touted the benefits of timber for structural elements.  However, incorporation of hardwoods, as well as a growing trend in sustainable timbers, have become increasingly popular with owners looking to achieve aesthetic, durability, and sustainability objectives in interior design.

Other natural materials such as leather and wool are also being incorporated to add texture and comfort. These finishes not only look beautiful, but they are also durable to withstand the harsh marine environment.

Renovation and Restomods

The popularity of restomods has been well established in the world of classic cars, but it has only recently grown in popularity in the world of yachting. Fortunately, this is changing with plenty of success stories to point to.  Restomods are ideal for owners looking for cost-effective transformations that maintain sentimental connections to vessels and deliver stunning customized spaces that can be more cost effective than new custom builds. They are also popular with owners who inherit family boats, but need more utility and comfort for future generations.

Historical interiors often lack the ergonomics and amenities most owners seek today.  Good restoration projects embrace as much of the original charm and character of the original design as possible while improving comfort and livability.  Upgrades to electrical systems, electronics and navigation, plumbing and propulsion systems are low hanging fruit.  The interior design aesthetics requires a careful and complementary approach which honors the original character while updating comfort, utility, and aesthetics.

Flexible Spaces for a Crew Cabin

Owners often struggle with the balance between the desire for a larger vessel with larger interior spaces and the challenge of maintaining a total vessel size (and cost) which is manageable.

As we get older the idea of managing and skippering our own vessel can come at the expense of enjoyment.  Hiring crew alleviates some of the operational challenges and burdens, but it also means sharing interior space with others.

Flexible crew cabins provide a cost effective way to optimize space for when crew is and isn’t aboard. One solution is the installation of pocket doors on sleeping quarters. This converts square footage from private berths (crew quarters) to main salon gathering space when doors are opened and transforms the space to private rooms for guests and crew when needed.

Smart technology

Yacht owners are increasingly interested in incorporating smart technology into their vessels. This includes lighting, climate control, entertainment systems, and security features that can be controlled remotely. Smart technology allows yacht owners to control the environment on board and manage energy consumption more efficiently. It also adds an extra layer of security by allowing the owner to monitor their yacht from afar.

The city is divided by the River Oka into two major parts: the Upper city ( Verkhnyaya or Nagornaya chast ) on the hilly right side and the Lower city ( Nizhnyaya or Zarechnaya chast — what literally means "the part over the river") on the left bank of the river. The Upper city is the old historical part of Nizhny Novgorod, whereas the Lower city is larger, newer and consists of more industrial districts.

The city was founded by Grand Duke George II of Russia in 1221 at the confluence of two most important rivers of his principality, the Volga and the Oka. Its name literally means Newtown the Lower , to distinguish it from the older Novgorod . A major stronghold for border protection, Nizhny Novgorod fortress took advantage of a natural moat formed by the two rivers.

Along with Moscow and Tver, Nizhny Novgorod was among several newly founded towns that escaped Mongol devastation on account of its insignificance and grew up into important centers of Russian political life during the period of Tatar yoke. For a short period of time it was the capital of the Suzdal Principality and competed with Moscow for the power in the region. However the competition with Moscow was lost and in 1392 the city was incorporated into Muscovy. Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin was built in 1508-1511 (under supervision of the Italian fortress engineers) and became one of the strongest Russian citadels. There is a legend saying that the project was initially developed with participation of Leonardo da Vinci. However there is no documented proof of Leonardo's work for that project, the only thing the legend is based on is the striking resemblance of Leonardo's sketches and the actual Kremlin schemes. The fortress was strong enough to withstand Tatar sieges in 1520 and 1536.

In 1612, the so-called national militia , gathered by a local merchant Kuzma Minin and commanded by Knyaz Dmitry Pozharsky expelled the Polish troops from Moscow, thus putting an end to the Time of Troubles and establishing the rule of the Romanov dynasty.

In 1817, the Makaryev Monastery Fair, one of the liveliest in the world the 16th-18th centuries, was transferred to Nizhny Novgorod, which thereupon started to attract numerous visitors and by the mid-19th century it turned Nizhny Novgorod into trade capital of the Russian Empire.

Under the Soviet period, the trade connections of the city were abandoned and Nizhny Novgorod became an important industrial centre instead. During the communist time the city was closed to foreigners to safeguard the security of Soviet military research. The physicist and the Nobel laureate Andrei Sakharov was exiled there during 1980-1986 to limit his contacts with foreigners.

The climate in the region is humid continental and it is similar to the climate in Moscow , although colder in winter, which lasts from late November until late March with a permanent snow cover.

By car [ edit ]

Nizhny Novgorod is situated on the M7/E30 road. The road is in decent condition, although with traffic it can take anywhere from 4 to 8 hours to drive to/from Moscow .

By boat [ edit ]

Turflot [dead link] , Infoflot , and many other companies operate multi-day river cruises down the Volga from early May to the end of September.

Many companies operate passenger boat service between Moscow and Astrakhan , with stops at most cities along the Volga River.

Get around [ edit ]

By foot [ edit ].

The city centre is compact and walkable. However, there are many inclines or steps from the river banks. The bridges are not pedestrian friendly since the sidewalk is very narrow and cars drive extremely fast close to the pedestrians.

By city rail [ edit ]

The City Rail connects areas where there are no metro lines. Connects with the subway at the Moscow railway station. It has 2 lines: Sormovskaya and Priokskaya. The fare by train costs 28 rubles. According to the Citicard Transport Card, the fare is 26 rubles. Also by train you can get to the nearest suburb, or transfer to suburban trains to Dzerzhinsk, Bor, Semenov or Arzamas.

By bus and trolleybus [ edit ]

As of May 2017 in each district of the city there are several city bus routes. The number of trolleybus routes is much less. In one district of the city there are 1-2 trolleybus routes. Trolleybus routes are completely absent in the Leninsky city district. It is worth noting that trolleybuses do not connect the Lower City to the Upper. This is because the trolleybuses do not have enough power to climb the mountain.

The trolleybus network is divided into 3 parts:

  • The upper trolleybus network (it unites all three districts - Nizhegorodsky, Sovetsky and Prioksky) with a turning circle on the Minin Square, near the Kremlin.
  • The lower trolleybus network (connects Kanavinsky, Moskovsky and Sormovsky districts)
  • The Avtozavod trolleybus network (connects all the distant sleeping microdistricts among themselves)

By tram [ edit ]

Throughout the city, land trams run. The longest route of all is 417. It connects the outskirts of Avtozavodsky district with the Moskovsky Rail Terminal. The journey takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. The route passes through the sleeping areas (approximately 75% of the way). Also in remote neighborhoods there are routes of several more trams, but in most cases, they are in the Upper City. By the way, you can reach there by tram 27 or 10 directly from the Moscow railway station.

By marshrutka [ edit ]

Marshrutkas do not stop at every stop. To indicate your intention to exit a marshrutka, press a button and to indicate your intention to enter a marshrutka en-route, you need to wave your hand.

By bicycle [ edit ]

Nizhny Novgorod has not very developed bicycle infrastructure. Special bike paths exist only on the Upper-Volga and Lower-Volga embankments and on Rozhdestvenskaya Street.

The upper city is very hilly and full of steep inclines and even many locals will get off their bicycles and push their bikes up the hill by foot. Drivers can be reckless and pose a danger to cyclists. The roads can also be icy during the winter. City cyclists solve this problem by replacing summer tires with winter tires.

Also, in 2017 the implementation of a new integrated transport scheme of the city began. It provides for a large number of bicycle paths in the Upper City (including on Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street) and in the Lower City.

Although it's Russia's fifth-largest city, you could be forgiven for never having heard of Nizhny Novgorod. Notwithstanding that another Russian city is simply called " Novgorod ," the current name of the city just doesn't have a memorable ring to it. (By contrast, its name during the Soviet years — Gorky, like the famous author — was much more iconic.) At any rate, this city of just over a million around six hours east of Moscow is more than worth a visit. These are just 12 reasons why!

Tour the Kremlin's 13 Towers

Like most every other city in Russia, Nizhny Novgorod is home to a Kremlin. (The word "kremlin" means "citadel" in Russian, and has nothing to do with the modern Russian government) One thing that elevated the Kremlin of Nizhny Novgorod above others in Russia (with the possible exception of the Moscow Kremlin and one or two others), however, is the fact that its wall has 13 towers. During the summer months, at least one free walking tour per day operates from the main entrance of Nizhny Novgorod's Kremlin.

Climb Russia's Longest Staircase

Named for one of the most famous Russian pilots of the early aviation age (Valery Chkalov), the Chkalov Stairs connect two of Nizhny Novgorod's public squares, which sit on the upper and lower embankments of the Volga River, respectively. Built in 1943 (during the period when Nizhny Novgorod was known as Gorky), the Chkalov Stairs currently have the distinction of being the longest staircase in Russia.

Go Wild at Limpopo Zoo

One thing that surprises many travelers to Nizhny Novgorod is how amazing its zoo, colloquially known as Limpopo is. In addition to being home to a tropical botanical garden (which, not surprisingly, is indoors), the zoo hosts a variety of reptiles, mammals and birds. There's also a small sculpture park on the grounds of Nizhny Novgorod's zoo, including both original and replica pieces.

Shop (or Just Stroll) Along a Storied High Street

Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street has been the de-facto "Main Street" of Nizhny Novgorod for more than 200 years. Well, minus the Soviet Union period, during which the cafes that once (and now) lined it became somewhat worthless, since intellectual conversations were basically forbidden. These days, you can come here for a cup of Russian tea then shop at the dozens of boutiques you'll find on either side of the street.

Sun Yourself at the Spit

Nizhny Novgorod sits at the confluence of the Oka and Volga Rivers, with the triangle of land at the point they meet being known as the Nizhny Novgorod Spit. Ignoring the unfortunate double-meaning of its name for a moment, this is actually a wonderful place to get a tan, if it's summer in the city and the sun happens to be shining. Even if not, photographers will enjoy a trip here for a view of the Kremlin and city center across the Volga.

Marvel at the Open-Air Museum of Rozhdestvenskaya Street

Like Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street, Rozhdestvenskaya Street has long been one of the most important streets in Nizhny Novgorod. However, while the former has become a primarily commercial artery in recent decades, the charm of the latter is in its well-maintained buildings, which hearken back to the mid-18th century. In fact, some locals go so far as to consider Rozhdestvenskaya Street an "open-air museum."

Ride Russia's Newest Cable Car

Russian investment in infrastructure isn't quite as dramatic as that of, say, China, but the Federation has nonetheless built a selection of interesting and modern transportation systems since the fall of the USSR. Among them is the just-opened cable car, which travels from the center of Nizhny Novgorod over the Volga River to suburban Bor. At any rate, a ride over the river and back is definitely worth inclusion on your list of things to do in Nizhny Novgorod.

Taste Traditional Shchi Soup

Shchi is one of Nizhy Novgorod's most delicious local specialties, available in most every local restaurant that serves Russian food. From above, a bowl of shchi seems incredibly complicated, with a colorful palette that suggests the inclusion of dozens of diverse ingredients. In fact, the magic of shchi is in its simplicity. Building on the traditional pan-Russian recipe of cabbage, pork fat and salt (yes, just three ingredients), locals in Nizhny Novgorod sometimes add minced meat or egg whites as bonus items, then top the tangy soup with a dollop of sour cream.

Having served as a monastery from its consecration in the early 15th century up until the beginning of the Russian Revolution, Makaryev became a convent after the fall of the Soviet Union , and is now home to 22 nuns.

Nizhegorodskaya Yarmarka

A yarmarka is something akin to a fair, and this historic former market place was restored in 1991, the site now playing home to a superb modern exhibition center. The city’s yarmarka plays host to international events, fairs, and conventions. In 2011, for the 20 year anniversary of the fair’s refounding, a vast array of exhibitions were organized, attended by thousands including members of the British royal family, Vladimir Putin, Mikhail Gorbachev , and Margaret Thatcher . The fair is not only a buzzing center of business and culture, it is also one of the city’s most impressive sights.

The Nizhegorodsky State Art Museum

Located inside Nizhny Novgorod’s ancient Kremlin, the building that houses this art gallery was once the home of the governor of the city. The exhibits are wide-ranging and include everything from 14th century religious icons, to work by 20th century contemporary Russian masters. Particularly dazzling is the collection by Russian painter Nicholas Roerich. The Chkalov Staircase

An idyllic spot from which to watch the sun’s rays set over the city, this monumental creation was constructed by the Soviet government and is unique to the city of Nizhny Novgorod. The staircase derives its name from pilot Valery Chkalov who, in 1937, became the first man to fly from Moscow to Vancouver through the North Pole. A monument to Chkalov stands at the top of the stairs. The construction of the staircase cost almost 8 million rubles – an immense sum at the time. Over 1,500 stairs connect the city center with the river embankment – making Chkalov’s landmark the longest flight of stairs along the Volga. Nowadays the staircase is a favorite meeting place and relaxation spot for locals.

The Rukavishnikov Estate Museum

The Rukavishnikovs were a family of immensely wealthy merchants originating from the region around Nizhny Novgorod. This superbly restored palace , their former home, has been transformed into a museum of Russian history and gives a realistic snap-shot of life for the wealthy under tsarist rule. The Sakharov Museum

Nizhny Novgorod’s Sakharov Museum is dedicated to dissident Russian scientist Andrei Sakharov . The nuclear physicist and human rights activist was exiled for six years to the very flat in which the museum is now housed. Sakharov’s support for civil reform and improved human rights in the Soviet Union earned him harsh persecution from the Russian government, but also, in 1975, a Nobel Peace Prize . Sakharov was incarcerated here until 1986 when a KGB officer arrived to install a phone in the flat. Just after the phone was installed it began to ring: the caller was Mikhail Gorbachev, ringing Sakharov to inform him of his release. This phone is now one of the museum’s most treasured artifacts.

Inside the walls of Nizhny’s Kremlin can also be found one of the best modern art galleries in Russia. Nizhny Novgorod: A ‘Russian Detroit’ from 19th to 21st centuries (PHOTOS)

Founded in 1221, Nizhny Novgorod (260 miles east of Moscow) is still one of the most visited and populated Russian cities (it has more than 1.2 million inhabitants). Its ancient kremlin, cozy paved streets with centuries-old buildings (a regular city plan was adopted after Empress Cathrine the Great visited the city in 1767) and scenic views of the Volga River warm the hearts of locals and tourists. By the way, many people confuse it with Veliky Novgorod (established in 859) in the north-west of Russia. In Russian, the word ‘Novgorod’ literally means “new city” and, luckily, there are only two in the whole country: ‘Lower new city’ and ‘Great new city’. One of the oldest and largest automobile plants that produces GAZ cars is still located in Nizhny (Russians often omit ‘Novgorod’) - and that’s why the city is often known as the ‘Russian Detroit’. In Soviet times, it bore the name of main Soviet writer Maxim Gorky , who was born there.

And despite its steel and metal history, today, Nizhny Novgorod has the poetic epithet of the capital of sunsets. We compared some vintage and recent photos of the city.

The stone citadel of Nizhny Novgorod was built in the 16th century around the Chasovaya (Sentry) Hill. Here is the most famous view of the fortress with the Dmitrievskaya Tower. Previously, a moat was dug in front of the tower, which was filled with water. At the end of the 18th century, the moat was filled and the tower sunk about 6 meters into the ground. The tower received its a-la Rus facade only at the end of the 19th century.

On Moscow’s Red Square, there is a monument to Minin and Pozharsky , who were the leaders of the people’s militia against the Polish intervention of 1611. Interestingly, exactly the same monument stands in Nizhny Novgorod! And all because the militia gathered there. City official Kuzma Minin called on all residents to fight and Prince Dmitry Pozharsky was chosen as the militia head. The date of Moscow’s liberation from the Poles (November 4) has been celebrated as National Unity Day in Russia since 2005. In the same year, Nizhny Novgorod’s Skoba Square, where the militia gathered, was renamed ‘National Unity Square’ and a monument to the two national heroes was erected there, as well.

With 560 steps, these are some of the longest stairs in Russia! The site where this staircase was built was called the ‘Volga Downhill’ and was very popular among locals, since it had one of the most picturesque views of the Volga. The stairs, named after a pilot named Valery Chkalov, connect the upper and lower embankments in the historical center of Nizhny Novgorod. Among the architects was Lev Rudnev , who worked in the Stalinist Empire style and designed the Moscow State University and the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw.

Amazing: At the end of the 19th century, in the center of Nizhny Novgorod, two funiculars operated near the kremlin. They literally worked on water. Imagine a water tank in the car: filled at the upper station, empty at the lower station. When one car went down, the lower one went up under its gravity. They would move at the same time. The funiculars were abandoned in the 1920s, when a tram line was completed. Today, only ruins remain in place of the historical funiculars, although the city administration has already promised to recreate this type of transport. There still is one funicular operating in Nizhny Novgorod, which connects it with the city of Bor on the other side of the Volga River.

5. Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street

The main street of Nizhny Novgorod has undergone many changes over the centuries. Before the revolution of 1917, it was the favorite area of nobles to settle. Along the street, you can still see old stone mansions, theaters, churches. One of the most beautiful buildings is the main state bank built in Neo-Russian style. It was opened for the 300th anniversary of the Romanov house in 1913. At the beginning of the 20th century, a tram line passed there - one of the first in Russia. But, since the 1980s, the street has become pedestrian only.

6. Rozhdestvenskaya Street

A historical tram line has been preserved on the other oldest street, Rozhdestvenskaya. However, now it’s a tourist transport and it operates only in summer. The street has also preserved its appearance since pre-revolutionary times. There, you can see almost all the same buildings that were in Tsarist Russia, including the Stroganov and Golitsyn estates, the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Blinov Passage - the first shopping center outside of Moscow and St. Petersburg.

The metro here was opened in 1985: In Soviet times, only cities with the population over 1 million residents had a subway. It consists of only two lines and sees about 115,000 commuters a day, which makes it less popular than ground transports. In the near future, there are plans to build new stations on the other side of the Oka River.

The Referees Tower built in the Neo-constructivist style on the embankment of the Grebnoy Canal was built in 1988 for the 2nd All-Union Youth Rowing Games. Over time, it was severely destroyed and only recently restored, for the 800th anniversary of the city. Of course, with cafes and places to relax. It’s beautiful, isn’t it?

The GAZ (Gorky Automobile Plant) plant in Nizhny Novgorod became one of the first in Russia. Early models of trucks and passenger cars were produced under a Ford license. In the 1920s-1930s, American specialists also helped to build the plant itself and the socialist city for workers In the post-war years, the ‘Volga’ and ‘Chaika’ cars were the most expensive among Soviet cars - a citizen’s dream! These days, the plant still operates, but produces mainly trucks and minibuses.

The Cathedral Church of Nizhny Novgorod is located in one of the most picturesque places of the city - on the arrow of the Volga and the Oka rivers. People used to call it ‘fair church’, since its parishioners were merchants who came to fairs from all over the country. It also was only open in the summertime. In the Soviet years, the iconostasis was dismantled for firewood to heat houses and then it was even planned to demolish it altogether and build a lighthouse and a monument to Lenin on the same site. Nevertheless, the cathedral was preserved (in the 1980s, it was restored by volunteers) and, in 2009, was reinstated as the city’s main church.

It isn’t hard to identify Aaron Donald’s career highlight. In fact, Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay knew it was coming before it even happened:

Technically, this play goes down in the record book as just an incomplete pass. Here’s the official play-by-play:

In reality, Donald’s pressure forced the fourth-down incompletion that won Super Bowl LVI for the Rams. The image of Donald pointing at his finger after the play, shouting “ring me” to the crowd in SoFi Stadium , will define his career. And not for nothing, it’s also worth remembering the play before this one, when Donald tackled Bengals running back Samaje Perine on third down, less than a yard short of the first-down marker. It wasn’t just one play to win the Super Bowl. It was back-to-back plays. As single-handed of a Super Bowl win as a defender can possibly have. He should have been the MVP in that game, but the league’s archaic voting process required ballots to be cast before the game ended, so Cooper Kupp took home that honor.

Oh, and for what it’s worth, Donald provided the pressure that forced Jimmy Garoppolo into the interception that clinched the NFC championship game for the Rams two weeks prior, to send the team to the Super Bowl in the first place. Another play that doesn’t show up for Donald in the stat sheet:

On Friday, Donald announced his retirement from the NFL . He’ll go down for many as the best defensive lineman of all time, if not the best defender of all time, full stop. His 2022 Super Bowl run is possibly the best postseason by a defensive player in league history. His retirement doesn’t just end an era of Rams football, but closes the book on one of the most dominant careers in NFL history, at any position.

The championship ring may be Donald’s crowning achievement—you can see that from the tears streaming down his face when he forced that incompletion—but Donald retires with as much hardware as nearly any defender who ever played. In 10 NFL seasons, he made the Pro Bowl 10 times. He was named a first-team All-Pro eight times. He won Defensive Player of the Year three times. He won Defensive Rookie of the Year when he first came into the league in 2014 and was named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team for the 2010s (it’s not out of the question that he’ll also make the all-2020s team, despite retiring less than halfway through the decade).

Now would be the cute part of a career retrospective where I’d write something like “It’s appropriate that Aaron Donald’s career-defining play didn’t count in the stat sheet because his contributions were often invisible.” Except that isn’t true. Donald had plenty of invisible contributions, sure (if you ever closely watched him, you quickly noticed how many bodies teams committed to stopping him), but he was also incredibly visible. He often stuffed the stat sheet. Some of the numbers barely make sense.

Donald recorded 111 sacks in his career— by far the most among players since he entered the league in 2014 . The fact that Donald did that while primarily playing on the interior is difficult to comprehend, even for those of us who are lucky enough to have watched him. For future generations, it’ll be downright mind-boggling until they turn on the tape.

The nine players below Donald on the sacks list since 2014 are all true edge defenders—the closest defensive tackle is Kansas City’s Chris Jones, who has 75.5 sacks. By nature of the position, interior defensive linemen usually face double-teams, while edge defenders more frequently exploit one-on-one matchups. Donald’s ability to beat double- and triple-teams literally changed the math on defense and made him the outlier of all NFL outliers during his career. I mean, just look at this:

Now look again and consider that that graph is from the 2021 season, one of the “down” years for Donald. He was only third in Defensive Player of the Year voting that season!

Given the level of difficulty he faced, Donald’s production cannot be overstated. How many players instantly get multiple hits if you search their name with the phrase “quadruple-team” attached?

Donald is only 32, and he was still one of the most disruptive pass rushers in the league last season. He could have had many more productive seasons ahead of him. But this announcement didn’t come as a surprise—Donald had been publicly toying with retirement for several years now. And who can blame him, seeing the type of attention he gets from defenses on every snap?

As it stands, Donald had nothing left to prove. He almost single-handedly delivered his team a Lombardi Trophy. He rewrote record books and created a highlight reel that will be hard for anyone to top. He’s a surefire first-ballot Hall of Famer and one of the best players in league history. His career is over, and we’re still trying to comprehend his dominance. We maybe never will.

EVANSVILLE — The massive hole on Main Street won't be filled for another two years, but developers have a tentative start date for construction.

Work should start in May, CRG Residential Director of Development Ross Merder told Evansville's Design Review Committee during a March 12 meeting. From there, the build will take two years, meaning The Vault, located at 424 Main Street in Downtown Evansville, will be complete in 2026.

The project is currently in site review, which is the process where permits are approved for the development.

This timeline has construction set to start about three years after the tower at 420 Main St. was demolished. The former Old National Bank headquarters was housed there from 1970 to 2004. After ONB left, the building deteriorated, and efforts to rehabilitate it did not materialize.

Matt Wallace with Morley Corp, the civil site designer on the project, said the project will be a four-story building with 161 apartments and commercial tenant space on the Main Street side of the main floor.

There will be a lower-level parking garage, and an interior courtyard with landscaping and a pool, he said.

Regarding construction, Wallace told the Design Review Committee all the sidewalks around the site will need to be demolished and repoured. But there are no full road closures planned, he said.

The plan for any partial closures is still being developed with the City Engineer's office, Wallace said. There likely will be temporary lane closures, and some of the parallel parking on Sycamore Street will need to be closed.

There will also be a pedestrian traffic plan finalized as well to help people traveling on foot in the area.
