News Nilaya, owner IMA Member Philip Balcaen, wins second consecutive Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta & Rendezvous

Nilaya, owner ima member philip balcaen, wins second consecutive loro piana caribbean superyacht regatta & rendezvous.

It is the second consecutive year and third time in the past four years that the 111-footer Nilaya has won the trophy at the seventh annual regatta presented by Italian brand Loro Piana and co-organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and Boat International Media. Built by Baltic Yachts, Nilaya won all three races in Class A by an average of more than 6 minutes.

"It comes down to good management and, of course, a great owner," said tactician Bouwe Bekking. "Without a great owner you can't put a good team together and he puts a lot of emphasis on good team work. It's a combination of a couple of pros, a lot of friends, and a lot of history; we've been sailing together for nearly seven years now.

"The boat likes the medium to medium-heavy conditions we had this week," Bekking said. "The boat was well prepared. The owner bought all new sails. It just went well, the whole week."

Nilaya also won the Loro Piana Cup for winning Class A, as did the 38m P2 in Class B, the Swan 90 Freya in Class C and the 60m Perseus3 in Class D.

With a brisk wind of 13 to 20 knots propelling the 17 yachts around the 23-nautical-mile course set about the Sir Francis Drake Channel, P2 won its final race showdown with Ganesha to capture Class B.

The two were tied on points heading into today's finale, but the P2 crew signaled their intention to take no prisoners this morning when they fired their cannon-a 39-inch barrel, 2-inch bore armament that was captured from the French frigate Le Medee in 1801-upon leaving the YCCS dock. When they fired it again after finishing, everyone in ear shot knew the job had been done.

"The cannon has become our signature move," said Tony Rey, the tactician. "The poor fellow who has to fire the cannon has the hardest job because you don't want to misfire. But we had a great race with Ganesha, it seems it always comes down between us. Matt Humphries and the guys on Ganesha are incredible competitors. We like to think we're getting better and better at sailing P2. We all take pride in getting on the podium here. It's a big deal."

Don MacPherson's Freya also captured its second consecutive class victory and third in the last four years, winning all three races in Class C by an average of more than 5 minutes.

"It was a fantastic week, we did well because we're a crew," said MacPherson. "It was really good racing and we made very few mistakes. I attribute our success to the crew, they did a great job."

For MacPherson and crew it was their fifth consecutive victory in the past year. They started winning at last year's Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta, continued at the St. Barth's Bucket last year, then won the Rolex Swan Cup last September in Sardinia and finally the Rolex Swan Cup last week in Virgin Gorda.

MacPherson is no different than Nilaya's owner; there's always a new sail to purchase. "The new sail this week was the yellow A2 spinnaker. I think it was a great sail for us. We sailed quite well downwind," said MacPherson.

In Class D the 60m Perseus^3 completed its first class victory with a come-from-behind win. Perseus^3 suffered a problem with its roller furling system that prevented the crew from using the large headsail for half of the race's upwind work. The crew was able to get the issue sorted out in time to score a 45-second win over Action, the new 123-footer from Dykstra Naval Architects and built by Royal Huisman.

At the final awards Action, helmed by Olympic medalist Shirley Robertson with Volvo Ocean Race winner Ian Walker calling tactics, was presented the British Virgin Islands Trophy for best newcomer to the event.

All winners were heartily cheered by their peers at the final awards presentation, signaling a fantastic end to another successful Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta & Rendezvous.

"The Loro Piana Superyacht regattas represent one of the highlights on both sides of the Atlantic and these last four days have been incredible," said YCCS Commodore Riccardo Bonadeo. "Here we have such a range of boats, from the smallest at 23 metres to the largest at 60 metres. We also have classic designs such as Wild Horses, to new boats, such as the Swan 115 Shamanna. I want to thank our title sponsor Loro Piana for supporting us and the owners who make all of this possible. I look forward to seeing you in June in Porto Cervo and in 2018 back here in Virgin Gorda."

In its 50th anniversary year, the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda racing calendar continues in May in Porto Cervo with the Audi Italian Sailing League and the Mediterranean edition of the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta.

Topinvesteerder Filip Balcaen: 'Alles is zeer duur. 't Is het moment om te verkopen'

philip balcaen yacht

We beleggen alleen onze eigen centen.

Balcaen : ‘Onze projecten kosten 20 à 100 miljoen euro.

Balcaen : ‘It’s getting crowded. Daarom zoeken we net complexe, grootschalige projecten.

Alles is zeer duur.

Balcaen : ‘Mohawk is onze belangrijkste participatie. Daarin willen we verder groeien.’

Balcaen : ‘Alles is zeer duur.

Balcaen : ‘Voortdoen. Osan deure doen, zeggen we in West-Vlaanderen.

Filip Balcaen's Swan 56, Aqua Equino took line honours yesterday, won Class A and continues to retain the top spot at the Swan Europeans

Filip Balcaen’s Swan 56, Aqua Equinox, proved to be the boat to beat in the 2003 Swan European Regatta by taking line honours and winning Class A, holding on to the top spot on the leader board with three races to go in this five-day regatta at Cowes. However, this victory was not enough to keep one of the smallest boats in the fleet, John McIntyre’s Swan 36 Shaytana from snatching overall winner of the day.

David Ross, helm on Shaytana shares his tactics for the day: “What happened today evolved around the serious changes in weather. It started off very light and we were near the back of the fleet approaching the forts, then the wind swung round and we managed a gain a few places on the spinnaker legs. We took advantage of the second wind shift at Bembridge Ledge, compared to other smaller boats, improving our position all the time. We used the bigger boats ahead to give us a gauge of the wind and an indication of the best route to take – this definitely helped.”

Ross added: “This is a great result for us today – we are just a crew made up of purely amateur sailors all from RAF Brize Norton. We’ve never sailed together before Sunday!” Both classes started early this morning off the Royal Yacht Squadron line, after a decision made by the Race Committee to change the planned Round the Island Race to two separate courses set towards the Nab Tower, East of the Solent. It was a slow Spinnaker start with very light winds of 5-6 knots, at times dropping to virtually nothing. The Swan 45s yet again rose to the challenge of light airs as Keith Miller’s, Crackerjack, crossed the line first ahead of Aqua Equinox and the only Russian entry, Swan 48 Murka. Paul Winkelmann’s Swan 60 Island Fling made a valiant attempt to get out infront, but was hampered by the conditions and the superior boat speed of the Swan 45’s. The dominant Swan 60 was never able to recover as a runner broke, off Bembridge Ledge forcing her to retire.

In Class B the battle continued between Stephen James’ Swan Jacobite and Libby Deegan’s Swan 441 Menenes. At the start, Jacobite found herself hemmed in at the Squadron end of the line and overtaken by the majority of the fleet, however this minor set back didn’t stop this well raced Swan from gaining ground and eventually joining Menenes and Alan Foulquier’s Swan 441 Saga at the front of the fleet as they made their way East along the Solent towards Bembridge Ledge.

As the front runners in Class A rounded the Nab Tower and made their way back up the course, Aqua Equinox and Graham de Zille’s Swan 45 Amnesia had managed to separate themselves from the fleet by 10 minutes thanks to the breeze filling in to 10-12 knots. This advantage was maintained as they tackled the sprint legs on their way back to The Royal Yacht Squadron finish line, with Aqua Equinox taking line honours just ahead of Amnesia. In Class B, Jacobite yet again proved her racing prowess by pulling away from Menenes after six and half hours of sailing to cross the finish line first, but suffered against the better rating awarded to Shaytana when it came to winning the class.

Current Build Phase

The use and requirements of the future client determine the size, speed and GT of the yacht. After the first layout we start developing the general arrangement and building specs, followed by tank tests and engineering.

Staggering deck space

Saturnus is a 65-metre yacht with a Fast Displacement Hull Form. As a result, she has achieved what was considered impossible when thinking along conventional lines. Fortunately, Heesen does not. In a world where a 5 per cent gain is considered a triumph, this hull is more efficient than any other yet tested.

First impressions

Leave aside the technical and enjoy the lifestyle. Deck space is staggering with over 267 square metre on her three upper decks. The foredeck is both a helipad and sun terrace set over gull wing doors that open to reveal a full-beam tender garage.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

philip balcaen yacht

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

philip balcaen yacht

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

philip balcaen yacht

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

philip balcaen yacht

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

philip balcaen yacht

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

philip balcaen yacht

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

philip balcaen yacht

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA
