Let your taste buds enjoy new discoveries.

Bergen offers its visitors a vibrant cultural scene and is renowned for Bryggen Hanseatic Wharf, the Fish Market, and the surrounding mountains, as well as its fjords, including the breathtaking Hardangerfjord and Sognefjord. In Bergen you will find just about everything from tea rooms to gourmet fish restaurants, from small bistros to discotheques, bars and nightclubs. Sognefjord is Norway's longest fjord, with Naeroyfjord, one of its arms, being on UNESCO's World Heritage List. HARDANGERFJORD

Situated not far from Bergen in the heart of Fjord Norway, the staggering Hardangerfjord is world's third largest fjord and second largest in Norway. It is well known for fruit trees blossoming in spring, the Vøringsfossen Waterfall and the Folgefonna Glacier. Here visitors on a Norway luxury charter yacht could incorporate a lovely Hardanger National Tourist Route hike or see the Barony Rosendal, a historic estate and manors.

Oslofjord is an inlet in the south-east of Norway, stretching from Torbjornskjaer and Faerder to Langesund in the South to Oslo in the North. It is not a fjord in the geological sense, but it refers to a wide range of waterways. Every single island in the innermost part of the fjord boasts its own identity and unique history. The most renowned islands include Hovedoya, Lindoya, Nakholmen, Bleikoya, Gressholmen, and Langoyene.

Oslo is Norway's capital with exciting city life and excellent access to the great outdoors. The most popular attractions comprise the Vigelandsparken Sculpture Park, the Opera House and the Viking Ship Museum. The Vigelandsparken Sculpture Park provides 63 acres of installations by international artists, as well as museums, restaurants and a panoramic view of the city. The modern downtown waterfront area has a fabulous blend of restaurants, museums and chic urban living.

Situated close to Stavanger, LYSEFJORD is renowned for the mountain formations of Kjerag and Preikestolen (The Pulpit Rock). Top activities for yacht charterers here would include a hike to the top of the Preikestolen or exploring the Kjerag Mountain. If you dare, you can stand on Kjeragbolten - a rock wedged in the mountain's crevasse, suspended above a 984-meter deep abyss. Hengjanefossen Waterfall is also a spectacular natural wonder to see.

THE NORTHERN LIGHTS

Vibrant colours and mystic tales spring to mind when thinking of 'The Northern Lights'. A must-see on a Norway superyacht charter, Northern Norway is a destination to include in your itinerary. Theoretically, you can see the northern lights all over Norway. However, the best places are above the Arctic Circle in Northern Norway.

Compared to its relatively modest land area, Norway's coastline is immense, if you include the mainland, the roughly 50,000 islands, the numerous fjords and all indentations it measures 21,925. This gives yacht charters a lot of opportunity for immense sailing and cruising pleasure in protected waters.

In the land of the midnight sun, you'll share your yacht charter experience with few, other than the local fishermen and several species of wildlife. Norway's most pristine cruising area is Lofoten, where rugged pinnacles protrude from the sea. The most visited fjords are Vestlandet, which in cases a long stretch of the Norwegian coastline. The landscape here will inspire the stereotypical images of Norway. Imagine yourself here, cruising through the incredible peaks, on your own yacht charter.

The best time to cruise the Scandinavian coasts, is from April to August, although, with the correct clothing and a heated charter boat, a western coast cruise of Norway, in off season, can be an equally unforgettable experience.

The types of yacht charter available in Scandinavia, Finland, Sweden and Norway include motor, sailing, bareboat charter, skippered, crewed yachts, catamaran, power boat, sailboat, and even the occasional luxury yacht charter.

A yacht charter in Scandinavia will leave you feeling breathless from the shear raw beauty the landscape provides.

We are back from our arctic adventure and had a wonderful time. Everything went perfectly: the boat was excellent, the captain and crew were positive and helpful beyond our expectations, Martin was a great guide, and the sun was shining almost every day. We saw all of the wildlife we expected, including the most unique narwhale sighting imaginable. We were so impressed that we are considering a trip to Antarctic in December M.P chartered HANSE EXPLORER in Norway and Svalbard Archipelago in August.

The Kingdom of Norway (Norwegian Kongeriket Norge). This country,  occupies the western part of the Scandinavian Peninsula in Northern  Europe. Its name originates from the Old Norse word Nor?rvegr – “way to  north." Norway is a great sailing destination, surrounded by three seas:  the Barents Sea to the northeast, the Norwegian – to the West and  Northen Sea – to the south-west it has a lot to offer to most  experienced sailors. Norway has a long and narrow territory with 30%  covered by forests, many rivers and lakes. More than half of the  country's territory is occupied by mountains.

Only Norway yacht charter vacation can offer a unique blend of  gorgeous scenery, diverse wildlife and spectacular Nothern Lighst  watching. Explore drammatic northern nature and spectacular landscapes  form the comfort of your yacht or catamaran.

General description: The kingdom of Norway, one of the largest  countries in Europe, spreads its borders along the North Sea, the  Norwegian Sea and the Arctic Ocean. Norway yacht charter is an ideal way  to explore magnificent fjords, which are unique geological formations  stretching deep into surrounding mountains, indenting its rugged  coastline, present the most spectacular features. Norway is also the  home of the Nobel Peace Prize.

Places of interest:

The capital, Oslo, is a vibrant city centered round a harbor and  guarded by the 14-th century castle. The center of Oslo is home to the  Royal Palace, Viking Ship Museum, a lot of parks and galleries, as well  as other public institutions. Rent a boat in Norway and discover the  area close to Oslo, that is well built-up, with bustling harbors,  guarded by fortresses as early as 1643. But further south the scenery is  like post cards depicting dramatic towns and serene villages with  quaint clapboard houses and boats galore.

Bareboat charter in Oslofjorden area will bring you to the oldest  settlements dated back to Stone and Bronze Ages. Hanko is one of the  islands in this area. Its harbor town has the oldest naval museum in the  world, established in 1853. Although it sits on a bare rock, facing the  fjord, its sheltered eastern side is well forested, providing a  much-favored harbor and anchorage. The Norwegian Yachting Association  was founded here in 1882. Since then the island has been a venue for  national regattas, sailing races and world championship events. Norway  yacht charter in July will give you a chance to see most popular Hanko  Regatta that collects over 200 boats.

Southern Norway bareboat charter

The southern coast ( Oslo and Bergen ),  lined with silver-sand beaches set against a backdrop of high mountain  plateau, and white-painted houses in fish-farming villages, is known as  the sunny side of Norway and summer paradise for holiday-makers. Renting  a boat here you will find numerous harbors with all necessary  amenities.

Western Norway yacht charter

The long lacy western coastline borders the North Sea. This part of the  country is a true land of fjords, waterfalls, glaciers and secluded  beaches. Bergen is the second biggest town in Norway and offers number  of yachts for charter. Back in 10170 Bergen was the largest town in the  country and the capital of a region that included Iceland, Greenland and  parts of Scotland. Even after Oslo became capital of Norway in 1299,  Bergen continued to grow as a trading center, especially for the exports  of dried fish. Now it is a true center of shipping. Bergen is a World  Heritage City and the official residence of the king of Norway.

Northern Norway

Northern Norway ( Tromso and Lofoten )  has been called as "the land of excitement" or "the land of the high  flames". These expressions capture the essence of it - the shimmering  Northern Lights of winter and the midnight sun that shines day and night  in summer. With bareboat charter, you will be able to explore its  unspoiled coast that consists of a multitude of islands, fjords,  snow-clad peaks and glaciers. The northernmost point in Norway, Nordkapp  (the North Cape), is a place of pilgrimage for all-time traveler. Sheer  1,014-ft (309-m) high perpendicular cliffs form this most amazing  landmark as Europe's most northerly point.

Rent a boat in Eastern Norway

The route between Tonsberg and Tjome, known as World's End, is only  19 miles (30 km) but plenty of time needed to explore this stunning  archipelago. There are impressive coves, narrow sounds, old skipper's  houses and boathouses, also a string of inviting holiday resorts.  Bridges connecting the larger islands and the sea is never far away for a  refreshing swim. Mountains, valleys and lakes dominate this incredible  landscape. It has a special appeal for rock climbers and hikers: from  the easy alpine pastures in Alvdal to demanding peaks in the national  parks.

Festivities. There are four defined seasons in Norway and "every  season has its charm". And Norway finds its enjoyment in each of them by  creating a number of festivals: snow and ice sculpture tournament, ski-  kite event, white-water canoe racing, dog-sledding, boat festivals -  fairs and games all the way along the coast.

Although sometimes wind or cold, rain or snow, can bring those  pleasures indoors (Jazz, folklore and dance festivals, film premieres  and art exhibitions), but nothing can spoil high spirit, because  festivals are important part of the nation's cultural life.

While on the yacht charter in Norway do not miss its vibrant cuisine  rich in fresh seafood (smoked, pickled or dried fish including whale  meat and seal) and wild game (reindeer, elk, pheasant, etc.). Although  over the years the local restaurants have become incredibly diverse,  including exotic international meals in the menu, Norwegian specialties,  such as lamb and cabbage stew or reindeer medallions or marinade of  rabbit, cannot be missed. Other traditional favorites include cured  smoked sausage and pheasant breast served with mushroom sauce. One  should not forget Norwegian most famous cheeses, best served on Ryvita  crisps. And for desert try fruits and especially berries (gooseberries  or black- and red currants).

Climate in Norway

Much of the country is habitable due to the warming effects of the  Gulf Stream. It comfortably creates mild winters and cool summers on the  west coast. The south and west of the country have the highest average  temperature 72F (22C) in Oslo in July. Norway is a vast country with  wide variations in its geographical and climate conditions. Both at sea  and in the mountains the wind and weather can change rapidly, thus it is  advisable to consult local people with knowledge of the sea before  setting forth into unknown waters.

Magnificent scenery combined with the wide range of outdoor  activities (whale and seal safaris; cave walking; dog-sledging, mountain  climbing, etc.) - that what makes Norway so appealing to adventurous  travelers. Norway has enormously long coastline interspersed with fjords  and islands, making boating a pure haven. And the most rewarding way to  explore the remote and enticing parts of this unique country is  definitely by sailing. The western coastline provides the most  convenient and safe mooring for the boats. Although anchorage is  free-of-charge in Norway, there are certain (and sometimes complicated)  specifics about mooring and berths. That's why it is better to let  experts deal with it. No matter how well-organized your sailing event  looks like, it is always wise and safe to consult and present your  vacation dream to professionals and let "12 Knots" do what they are good  at.

Yacht Charter Norway

Yacht Charter From Bergen

SAILING WEST COAST NORWAY

Sailing West Coast Norway

Bareboat yacht charter in Bergen is a unique, varied and interesting experience. Due to the large cruising ground and infinite sailing options available a west coast Norway yacht charter will appeal to yacht charter groups for many different reasons. Some like the breath taking scenery, island hopping and quaint villages whist other charterers enjoy the history sites that Norway has to offer.

Stretching from Tananger and Stavanger, south of Bergen all the way up to Trondheim, the Norwegian coast has a unique geographical make up and follows a very distinct pattern. Outer fringes of sheltering islands of various sizes adorn this impressive coastline and a series of large sounds and fjords, formed millions of years ago by glaciers cut into the landscape to form horizontal waterways penetrating miles inland and forming some of the most spectacular natural scenery in the world.

SAILING IN THE FJORDS

Sailing in Norwegian Fjords

This is fjord Norway, a sailor’s paradise in the North Sea through deep and dramatic fjords lying in gorges cut between majestic mountains. The climbing mountains on either side of the fjords are steep and high, and continue as far below the water as above.

The headland of Statt divides the west coast into a southern section, starting in Stavanger, and a northern section, ending in Trondheim, where south and north Norway meet.

Bergen is Norway’s second largest city, and lies conveniently between two of the most famous and interesting fjords, Hardangerfjord, which goes under several names winding its way northwest between low-lying landscapes and steep impressive mountains, and Sognefjord, one of the world’s longest natural fjord.

Stavanger is situated in the southwest corner of a large bay of islands surrounded by fjords. Lysefjord, with its dramatic pulpit rock (usually seen in most of the Norway Fjords’ tourist literature) is as steep and dramatic as the larger longer fjords further north.

Fjord scenery is spectacular, but care and good planning is required for fjord sailing in many regions of Norway. There are small settlements, anchorages, and towns but due to some of the distances attention to detail when planning your passages is required. Winds can be unpredictable in the fjords and can occasionally funnel down through the fjords or from the mountains.

Many people prefer to island hop on either side of the inner lead, and admire the dramatic scenery of the mountains and fjords from a distance whilst ensuring some spirited and varied sailing days and passages.

Harbours are not crowded and you will find only a few other yachts. The islands themselves are diverse and varied – rich in cultural and historical interest. The history of the area tells tales and shows evidence from the era of the Vikings and the small fishing villages and fishing way of life is still abundant today.

Travel connections are excellent to Bergen with many low cost carriers flying in from Europe, the UK and further afield. There are good internal and international flights, along with ferries, trains and long-distance buses.

Places to visit

There are many different interesting sites to visit on a yacht charter in Norway. From Bergen you will find a lot of well protected mooring facilities so that you can get on and off the boat as you wish. There are many small-town docks for you to tie up to and you will always find a space between anchoring and mooring.

After a lovely sail, dock at Bergen and take the Ulriken Cable Car high into the mountains or take a ride on Fløibanen Funicular to the top of Mount Fløyen and once at the top you will have the most magnificent views of Bergen.

Enjoy a walk in the Troll Forest, a film setting for the movie Frozen which is situated at the top. Take a picnic with you and enjoy sitting at the lake at Skomakerdiket on Mount Fløyen and canoe on the lake. There is a café and restaurant at the top if you prefer a full meal after a leisurely day sailing. These will be precious memories made with your family and friends in Norway.

Fjords

Fjords of Norway

When on a yacht charter in Norway, visiting the fjords are an absolute must. Spread across Western Norway, these narrow fjords were created by a succession of ice ages, centuries ago, and they haven’t changed much since.

Today, Norway’s famed Fjords are strewn between tall mountains, cascading waterfalls, and glaciers, and are home to vast wildlife, like seals, eagles, whales, fish and more. Wander into its bordering villages, and you’ll find a local, nature-inspired lifestyle, with each community built around the strengths of its residents.

With individual fjords even named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the fjords are some of the most astounding landscapes in the world. Their natural beauty comes from their steep, narrow crystalline rock walls; most of which rise as high as 4,593 feet and go as deep as 1,640 feet below the Norwegian Sea.

Norway fjord

Going on a luxury yacht charter in Norway ? If you do, make sure you sail through the fjords. While there are currently 1,190 fjords to see, checkout some of our favorites — like the ones listed below.

As the southernmost of country’s largest fjords, Lysefjord stretches 24 miles in length, and ranges from 42 to 1,400 feet deep. It is surrounded by towering mountains, and is home to famed landmarks like the Pulpit Rock, in Forsand, and Mount Kjerag, on the southern side of Lysefjord, in Rogaland.

Hjørundfjord

Stretching 22 miles in length, Hjørundfjord is a fjord arm of a larger fjord, Storfjorden. It is surrounded by dense forests and the dramatic mountains of the Sunnmørsalpene mountain range, with some peaks as tall as 5,600 feet. Adding to its allure, Hjørundfjord is dotted with several small villages, like Bjørke, Leira, Viddal and Urke.

Hardangerfjord

Regarded as the reigning “queen” of Norway’s fjords, Hardangerfjord is characterized by spellbinding scenery you just can’t find anywhere else; like mountains, waterfalls, glaciers, orchards, blossoming fruit trees and more. The Nærøyfjord is an arm of the Sognefjord and has been dubbed a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stretching 111 miles in length, Hardangerfjord is the second longest fjord in Norway.

As Norway’s longest fjord, and the second longest in the world, Sognefjord runs inland for 127 miles and reaches depths of 1,300+ meters. Often referred to as “The King of Fjords,” Sognefjord also includes part of Jostedalsbreen, the largest glacier in all of continental Europe. This part of the world is regarded as one of the most beautiful travel destinations, namely due to its unique landscapes: like glaciers on mountaintops, green farmlands and deep, cascading fjords.

Geirangerfjord

Dubbed a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Geirangerfjord is one of Norway’s most popular tourist destinations. It is lined with cascading water falls and a number of abandoned farms, like Skageflå, Knivsflå and Blomberg, to name a few. The two most notable waterfalls in this part of the world are de Syv Søstre, which translates to “the seven sisters,” and Friaren, which translates to “the suitor.” The two waterfalls sit on opposite sides of the fjord, facing each other; leading to the belief that “the suitor” is trying to seduce “the seven sisters.”

Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, Nærøyfjord is Sognefjord’s most narrow, but best known arm. Only 12 miles in length, Nærøyfjord is filled with majestic mountains, deep valleys, towering peaks, snowfields, waterfalls and small hamlets.

Charter guide

Home to some of the best scenery to be found the world over, Norway treats her visitors to truly awe-inspiring views as they make their passage through her coastlines and fjords. Flanked by steep, dramatic mountains, the mainland also serves as a source of endless inspiration.

With an island count comfortably in the tens of thousands, and a distinctly vibrant city life, Norway presents a wealth of opportunities when it comes to compiling a uniquely memorable charter itinerary. Indeed, as a firmly established yachting hub with a centuries-old marine tradition, Norway offers visitors the chance to enjoy the most sublime sights of Scandinavia both when underway and at anchor. A favoured destination amongst expedition yachts, Norway also benefits from a number of quiet bays which offer charterers the opportunity to vacation in total peace.

Providing something of a bustling alternative to the rolling rural landscapes surrounding the fjords, the city of Bergen is defined by the cosmopolitan vibe which pervades its historic streets. Located on the west coast of Norway, the city is populated by a number of boutique stores and restaurants as well as a number of quaint buildings preserved as part of a World Heritage Site. Due to being one of the smallest cities in Europe, visitors are able to easily take in Bergen’s various charms in a relatively short period of time.

Getting out of Bergen and back into the iconic fjords is nicely straightforward, and it is here that the sheer tranquility of Norway can be felt. With over fifteen thousand miles of coastline being inhabited by less than five million, visitors are afforded a vast amount of space to enjoy their company and surroundings in a totally uninterrupted fashion. Expertly maintained, the Geiranger and Nærøy fjords are UNESCO-protected and boast an assortment of cascading waterfalls, mountain peaks, and even glaciers.

10 things you'll experience on a yacht charter in Norway

10 things you'll experience on a yacht charter in Norway

  • Ideas & Tips
  • Itineraries
  • See & Do
  • Eat & Drink

By Rebecca Bradbury   Last Updated: 21 March 2023

A year-round yacht charter destination,  Norway is known for its dramatic fjords, colourful coastal towns and Scandi flair. But it also has some interesting quirks that make visiting on a superyacht vacation even more interesting.

The demand for superyacht charters in Norway is increasing, as more adventure-hungry charterers set course for Scandinavia to experience a totally different type of vacation. From Heli-skiing in the mountains to whale watching on the fjords, Norway promises a charter vacation that you'll remember forever.

What's more, Norway is actually a great charter destination year-round. Expect blossoming wildflowers in the springtime, and snow-covered terrains in the winter.

map of norway with popular charter destinations

The country covers a huge area, from cultural Oslo and the famously pretty Bergen in the south, to the Arctic region in the north. Here, the Lofoten archipelago offers a true taste of Norway, while Tromso is famed for its great views over the Northern Lights.

Even further North, you'll find the island chain of Svalbard. Located between mainland Norway and the North Pole, this landmass is known for its frozen tundra, glacial waters and polar bear population.

If you're considering chartering a yacht in the region this summer, here are some unusual (but amazing) things you'll discover when you undertake a  Norway yacht charter .

1. Weird and wonderful Norwegian cuisine

Nordic cuisine is inventive, flavourful and doesn't shy away from unexpected combinations. From finnbiff (reindeer stew) to pinnekjott (smoked rack of lamb cooked over birch leaves), there are a number of creative dishes you should try on your next yachting vacation.

yacht in norway

The food scene in Norway is thriving at the moment, with a focus on locally sourced produce, new twists on classic dishes and fresh Scandinavian ingredients.

Whether you fancy fresh seafood, Nordic classics or contemporary fusion of flavours, there’s a restaurant in Norway for everyone.

If you're passing through Stavanger, ask your yacht crew to call ahead and book a table at Re-Naa, a Michelin-starred restaurant that regularly gets the food critics raving. In Alesund, be sure to check out Bro, where you can expect a varied menu and an innovative approach to gastronomy.

2. Whale-watching in the wild

The waters of Norway are home to lots of different whale species, including humpbacks, orcas, porpoises, sperm whales, minke whales and the largest animals on the planet; blue whales. They are more common further north, around Tromso and the Lofoten archipelago.

orca breaches the water in norway

While it's possible to see certain types of whale year-round, there are particular seasons when they tend to be more prevalent. Between late October to mid-January, your chances of seeing whales are very high, particularly humpback whales and orcas.

This activity is particularly well-suited to a yacht charter, since you'll have much more freedom and flexibility to move around and try and catch a glimpse of the whales breaching the water's surface. They tend to congregate in coastal areas, near the fjords where there are more fish to feed on.

3. Witness the immense Northern Lights

Norway is known for being one of the best places to see the Northern Lights, since the northern part of the country lies just below the auroral oval.

While there's no guaranteed season to see the spectacular Aurora Borealis, visiting between September and late March will increase your likelihood. (This coincides with the best times for whale watching, so you can easily incorporate both into your vacation.)

northern lights above town next to the water in norway

Around the Lofoten archipelago and Tromso, you should get the clearest visibility between 6pam and 1am and your best chance of seeing the Northern Lights is during cold, dry weather. Be sure to ask your yacht crew to whip up a hot drink for you, and enjoy this mesmerizing sight from the deck of your superyacht.

4. An insight into Viking heritage

Although thousands of years have passed, remnants of the Vikings can still be found across Norway today. From runes carved into stones to ancient settlements peppered through the fjords, reminders of Norway's ancestry live on.

A monolithic Viking monument in Norway

Many of us are familiar with the concept of bearded men in horned helmets, but there is actually much more to learn. In fact, Vikings revolutionized seafaring with their advanced understanding of shipbuilding. Longboats became a popular mode of transport, aiding in trade and expedition and allowing the Vikings to travel across Europe and even as far as America.

Their distinctive design, with their slender hulls, sea monster figureheads and hundreds of oars, are iconic in Norway, and there are plenty of museums where you can see replicas and authentic versions of these vessels.

5. Cosiness and contentment is an important concept, and it's called Kos

Most of us have heard of hygge – the Danish art of cultivating cosiness and contentment which became an international craze a few years ago. What is not as well-known is a similar but more encompassing Norwegian concept known as Kos.

yacht in norway

Kos is the kind of instant happiness you get when you feel safe, warm and a sense of togetherness. It’s a typical Norwegian luxury of simplicity where small joys make you feel great. Compared to hygge, it’s considered to apply to more things in life, like a house, a dinner, a conversation or a person.

Experience kos on a Norway yacht charter when enjoying a traditional cinnamon bun or gathering round a roaring fire with family and friends. According to Norwegian natives, it even includes the wonder of witnessing the awe-inspiring Northern Lights.

6. Arctic exploration in Svalbard

Situated in the Arctic Ocean over 1000 nautical miles of of Norway, Svalbard is quite a way away. However, the high latitude cruising region is worth the trip for a totally unique vacation.

snowy terrains in norway, with hikers walking across

You will most likely need to charter an explorer yacht if you're looking to cruise as far north as Svalbard, so be sure to view the entire fleet of expedition yachts for charter to get an idea of what's available.

The archipelago is home to many national parks that protect over 3500 polar bears, and is one of the few places in the world where you can see the threatened species up close and personal. They tend to frequent the coasts, so the chances of spotting them from the comfort of your superyacht is pretty high during peak season.

Svalbard is also a prime destination for those looking for the adrenaline-fuelled fun of heli-skiing. Speak to your charter broker about how you incorporate heli-skiing into your yacht charter vacation.

7. Most Norwegians have, or regularly rent, Hyttes (cabins in the woods)

A big part of the Norwegian lifestyle is the hytte, which is the word for a secluded cabin. These small getaway homes are located in remote regions, usually in the mountains, the woods or by the coast.

hytte norway by the sea

On Friday evenings, particularly during the summer, Norwegians often retreat to their hytte and spend a relaxing weekend there. Usually everything is made of wood, from the walls to the furniture, bringing the natural world inside for complete immersion into nature.

Many Norwegians own their own hytte and some are available to rent. Extend your superyacht vacation with a hytte break to truly experience the Scandinavian way of life.

8. The locals value the great outdoors, aka Friluftsliv

Staying in a hytte is widely associated with kos, but also friluftsliv – loosely translated in English as ‘free air life’. Being active and enjoying nature is a key characteristic of Norwegian culture.

yacht in norway

Norwegians recognise the benefits of spending time in the great wilderness that surrounds them; it’s a chance to rejuvenate, find balance, reduce stress, boost creativity and increase happiness.

With Norway’s exceptional landscapes, there is plenty of opportunities for friluftsliv on a yacht charter. Try hiking to waterfalls and spectacular natural landmarks like Trolltunga and Kjerag, as well as foraging, mountain biking and kayaking in the summer months, while winter is perfect for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

9. Norse mythology and folklore are integral parts of Norwegian culture

Stemming from its connection to the natural world, Norway is a land full of myth, magic, and folklore that is well-established and plays a big role in Nordic heritage and culture.

One of the most common themes in Norse mythology are trolls. No-one knows exactly where trolls originated from, but they have become a huge cultural phenomenon across Norway, with statues, figurines and stories about them everywhere.

statue of Thor God in museum in Oslo

From trolls and elves to tremendous thunder bending gods, an astounding number of Scandinavian myths are well-known throughout the world and still used regularly in pop-culture and fantasy.

10. Norway has a keen coffee culture known as Kaffetime

Norway is a nation of coffee lovers. The figures speak for themselves, with 12 million cups made a day, the country ranks among the globe’s top three coffee consuming nations.

yacht in norway

Scandinavia is known for its light roasts and you will find them in all their glory in Oslo’s coffee shops. The most common way to drink it is black and filtered, and many Norwegian natives will make their own at home in a stove-top kettle on a daily basis.

It’s not exactly clear where Norway’s coffee culture came from. Some believe it originates back in the country’s prohibition years (1916 to 1927) when coffee was substituted for alcohol, and has endured alongside the strict alcohol laws and high taxes. Others think it’s down to its ability to warm the soul on those long, dark winter days.

beautiful norwegian landscape

With so many unique quirks and astounding natural wonders, Norway should be top of your list for your next yacht charter. Speak to your preferred yacht charter broker  for more information on how to book.

Though you can charter a yacht on Oslo Fjord to explore the waterways of the capital in the southeast of the country, most Norway sailing holidays are about the fjords, mountains and islands close to the Arctic Circle around the west coast.

Broadly there are two charter areas - the west coast with the fjords and the Lofoten archipelago. Many fly in to this region in winter for the Northern Lights (aurora borealis) but with the freezing gales and difficult sailing conditions, the best time to visit Northern Norway is in the summer months when the sun never sets.

In summer you should bring your hiking boots as there will be mountains and islands you want to explore. Close to Haugesund you will want to do a mountain hike to Pulpit Rock with its astounding views of the fjord for example, while in the Lofoten islands you may want to explore an abandoned fishing village or glacier.

This is not a beach holiday! Though there have been heat waves recently you can expect temperatures to climb as high as 15 degrees C in summer - hardly teeshirt weather! It is about sightseeing, watching great whales and enjoying one of the last great wildernesses of Northern Europe.

Hiring A Yacht In Norway

If you are on a Norwegian sailing holiday with a paid skipper or crew at the helm, you will just have to turn up to the yacht charter base, pay your remaining 50% and get comfortable in your cabin.

For those on a bareboat rental, you will need to present your sailing qualifications to the charter company, inspect the vessel and then off you go. Do remember that gales can spring up at almost any time of the year and prepare for some fun sailing conditions as you set off on your sailing adventure.

Getting to Norway

The main national airport in Norway is at the capital, Oslo. If you are headed for the Lofoten Islands then you will take a connecting flight on to them from here.

There are regional international airports - Bergen notably is the biggest city on the west coast, but Stavanger (a major yacht charter base) also has an international airport. Depending on where you are flying from it is worth planning your journey ahead.

Best Areas To Charter

Norway is a renowned sailing nation with a well developed sailing scene in Oslo Fjord. This has a longer sailing season than the west coast and Lofoten Islands but the scenery isn't as dramatic and many people visit the country for the deep fjords, glaciers and mountains - these are on the west coast and of course in the Lofoten archipelago.

Stavanger is the main base for many a yacht charter company and is the jumping off point for you to explore 'Fjordland' with the steep mountains jutting out of the deep waterways. Haugesund and the famous Pulpit Rock are closeby, the jaw dropping scenery of Sognefjord nearby with quaint towns like Balestrand deep within. The Art Nouveau town of Alesund is far to the north, but is definitely worth exploring.

Lofoten Archipelago

For those who really want an adventure, deep inside the Arctic Circle are the Lofoten Islands. With their main town of Svalbard as a charter base, here you can explore these Arctic islands with their amazing wildlife and stunning scenery. In the 12th Century the Gulf Stream started bringing cod to the islands and villages sprang up as locals harvested the fruits of the sea. Many of these are now abandoned and you can get lost in one of Europe's greatest wildernesses that whales and polar bears call home!

Best Towns To Charter A Yacht In Norway

A small town on the west coast with its own international airport, south of Bergen, Stavanger is a charter base for yacht charterers who wish to enjoy a sailing holiday in the Norwegian fjord country.

Famous for being burned down and completely rebuilt in the Art Nouveau style in the early 20th Century, Alesund is a pretty town in the northwest of Norway. Still in fjordland, it is a great place to explore the mountains and glaciers of the area.

The main town in the Lofoten Islands, Svalbard is the main charter base for Norway yacht charters in these Arctic islands.

Types Of Yachts To Hire

There are three broad types of charter - bareboat charter, flotilla charters, and skippered yacht charter. Where it comes to the types of charter boat you can hire a motorboat charter , a monohull sailing yacht charter , catamaran charter , superyacht charter or luxury yacht charter and RIBs or day boats. Each have their benefits.

Coming in all shapes and sizes from 7 metres to 70+ metres, motorboats are as different as their uses. A seven metre RIB will be a great day boat and can be hired for as little as €110 a day for fishing trips or just blasting about the bay. The 15 metre plus size of motor yacht will have cabins and often en suite heads and cost upwards of €400 a day.

Starting at as 'little' as €10,000 a day a superyacht charter will come with skipper and crew as part of the package. On the crewed motor yacht or sailboat you will be treated like kings and queens on your personal mini-cruise-ship that will often come with tenders and toys such as jet skis and even sailing yachts!

Luxury Yacht Charter

Coming with or without skipper and/or crew, a luxury charter yacht will cost upwards of €700 a day and will come fully fitted out with all the modern conveniences and comforts of the very best sailing craft afloat. Expect en suite heads and comfortable staterooms but also a lot of fun under sail!

Starting at €450 a day, catamarans are luxury yachts that offer lots of space, a fair lick of speed on a reach and a shallow draft for mooring close into shore. They have twin engines in the hulls so while large they are incredibly manoeuvrable when in marinas and so forth.

Monohull Sailing Yacht

Ranging in size from 10 metres up to 20 or so, monohull sailboat form the backbone of the Norway yacht charter industry. Very good to windward, you will find yourself chewing up the miles at all points of sail without relying on the engines. Costing as little as €120 a day you will enjoy comfort and fun for a good budget price.

Skippered Yacht charter or Bareboat?

Where it comes to a Norwegian yacht charter you have two choices - bareboat or crewed yacht charter. Both have their own advantages.

Crewed charter

No sailing qualifications or not confident enough to bareboat charter yourself? That's no problem when it comes to yacht charter - you can take on a skipper and crew for the week or two touring Norwegian waters! With a crewed yacht charter you have someone aboard who knows the ropes and the best places to visit on your sailing holiday. They will know the best spots for what you want, be it hideaway restaurants or the best diving and snorkelling reefs on the islands! Costing as little as €100 a day (depending on the size and type of vessel) you will get the very best from your yacht charter holiday with one aboard. Don't forget the tip at the end of the week!

Bareboat yacht charter

A competent sailor? Have the qualifications required? Dreaming all year of casting off and exploring the Norwegianfjords and islands with just you and your friends? A bareboat yacht charter is just the thing for you. This is cheaper than a skippered yacht charter but you also get the privacy of being in your chosen group without a stranger in your midst. You get to choose your own adventure and go at your own pace - not a bad thing for a holiday to recharge your batteries ahead of rejoining the rat race...

Do you need a licence to charter in Norway?

If you want to bareboat charter you will need an approved boating qualification, below is a list of relevant qualifications:

International Certificate of Competence (ICC): Standard European Qualification for bareboat sailing

ASA 104 Bareboat certificate : The American Sailing Association's skipper standard qualification for hiring bareboat yachts.

RYA: The Royal Yachting Association's qualifications (minimum Day Skipper level) is necessary for bareboat hire, it's also worthwhile seeing do you need to have done a VHF radio course as well as some private yacht owners will require this.

There are also many other European national boating qualifications that are accepted here too, it's worthwhile checking these details before hiring.

If you want a skippered boat rental as a charter yacht then you don't need any sailing certification at all, you just turn up and off you go.

Best Times To Hire

With 24/7 sun in Northern Norway, the best time to charter a yacht is between June and August. This narrow sailing season is due to the climate where storms can batter you at almost any time of the year - but less so in the high summer months. Inside the deep fjords there is a lot of shelter from the winds so even while on the coast there can be quite exciting weather, you'll often be sheltered from it inland. The good news is that the peak tourist season is during the winter (to see the Northern Lights) so you won't exactly be fighting for a mooring as you would in Greece for example in July!

The Climate

June - August: This is dominated by North Atlantic weather systems that at this time of year can be quite benign. Expect westerlies of F3-4 and temperatures as 'high' as 15 degrees C.

How much does it cost for a Norway Charter

There's almost a yacht for every budget when it comes to chartering. For EU €120 a day - €840 a week - you can take a sailboat monohull out with five other adults. That is going to be cheaper than a week in a hotel for everyone.

Catamarans cost a lot more - expect to pay anything from €500 to €2,000 a day depending on the season.

Motor boats taken on a bareboat basis can cost as little as €500 a day if they have sleeping acommodation - much less if they are day boats.

RIBs can cost as little as €50 for an afternoon.

In each of the examples above you can take on a skipper starting at €150 a day depending on what the vessel is and their required qualifications to sail it.

Superyachts and luxury yachts are a different league - expect to pay €15,000 a day and up to €100,000 a day if your budget can manage it.

Is Yacht hire in Norway Legal?

Norway yacht charters are a legal and fun way to enjoy the best of this country. Do visit in the summer months when the weather is right though!

What kind of Yachts can I hire in Norway

You can hire everything from a small motor boat to a large superyacht charter. Monohull sailing yachts are common, though catamarans are more comfortable and spacious metre for metre.

What should I consider when hiring a Yacht?

Your budget for the sailing holiday should come first. Travelling - both getting there and what destinations to explore. What do you enjoy on a Norway yacht charter? Work out your itinerary from there. Who are you taking with you and what are your limitations as a sailor?

What are the best time to hire a Yacht in Norway?

Norway has a very short sailing season - just three months from June to August.

Do you have to pay a deposit when hiring a Yacht in Norway?

There are two deposits to consider. Firstly you will normally have to pay a 50% deposit on booking. This secures your trip. On arrival you will have to pay a refundable security deposit for the trip on your credit card though you can get yacht charter insurance - though non-refundable this can be cheaper.

What happens if my Yacht breaks down?

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to/are on a mooring you will be able to phone a number given by the yacht charter company.

What should I think of before I hire a Yacht in Norway?

Do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter you want to book? Where do you want to go? Bring warm clothing as it's rarely bikini weather!

Do I need a visa to visit Norway?

If you are from a North American, Oceania or European country you shouldn't normally require a visa to sail in Norway. Check with your Norwegian Embassy if unsure.

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat rental before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

If you want to sail without a captain then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

A Norway yacht charter can offer some really lovely sailing.  While it is considerably cooler than some of the other European destinations, you can still enjoy great weather.

You will find July and August to be the sunniest and warmest months, with average temperatures around  20°C / 68°F.  May is the driest month, which is an important consideration given the mountains that trap rain clouds.

However, if you plan to visit between May-August you will be able to see Norway at it’s finest.

Stavanger Airport is about 32 km from the base.

Haugesund is slightly further out, at 62 km away. Both have frequent flights from many European destinations.

Yacht4Less can provide airport transfers to the base if needed. Just speak with your charter consultant, and provide your travel itinerary details.

Buses are also available for a quick and easy transfer. Bus schedules available, here.

Tip #1: Important to note that Norway uses the Krone, so if you would like to pay with cash, you should arrange to do the exchange before you leave, or from a kiosk in the airport. However, many places in Norway accept credit cards.

Tip #3: For more cosmopolitan settings, you can explore the capital city of Bergen, a UNESCO site known for its colorful buildings and unique culture.
