Panama-Pacific International Exposition

Discover the history behind the PPIE

An introduction to the panama-pacific international exposition.

One afternoon in mid-July of 1915, several thousand people standing on San Francisco’s blustery Marina Green collectively craned their necks to watch aviator Art Smith pilot his hand-built craft through a series of aerobatic stunts overhead. For many, this was the first time they’d ever seen an airplane fly. Some held their breath as Smith’s machine rolled and looped above the stately complex of ivory palaces accented with luminous colors and cut-glass jewels that stood at the verge of the sparkling silver-blue bay: the Panama-Pacific International Exposition (PPIE).

Overview: What Was the PPIE?

In 1904, when city leaders first envisioned San Francisco as host of a grand international exposition commemorating the completion of the Panama Canal, could they have imagined a 635-acre "city within a city" arising out of the ashes of a devastating earthquake and fire? Could they have predicted—just a decade later at the outbreak of World War I—the astonishing success of this world’s fair? The story of the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition is a tale of vision and imagination, perseverance and fortitude, talent and ingenuity that captivated a city, a state, the nation, and the world on the cusp of momentous globalization, innovation, and creativity. Revisiting it today, we recognize our achievements as well as our dreams.

In the crowd, a child might be standing shoulder to shoulder with an actual gold rush forty-niner, a Civil War veteran, or a survivor of the Donner Party. And that same child would be transfixed by the images on her home television set sixty-four years later as she watched a man walk on the moon. The span of history witnessed by visitors to the 1915 Exposition reveals an era of astounding change. An examination of this event—perhaps the last in the original era of great world’s fairs—offers a kaleidoscope of culture and progress. The Exposition’s highs and lows echo into the twenty-first century.

The story of the PPIE, officially nicknamed the "Jewel City," began more than two decades before it opened, and surprisingly gained momentum following the Great Earthquake and Fire of 1906. San Francisco leaders’ first thought, as they surveyed the nearly four square miles of shattered masonry and charred wood left by the disaster, was to rebuild. Their second thought was to throw a giant celebration and invite the world to come. Perhaps a judicious course would have been to delay or cancel the world’s fair the city had contemplated since 1891, but San Francisco—steep, brash, wayward San Francisco—was never known for its prudence.

In name, the celebration would commemorate the United States’ completion of the Panama Canal. More importantly to the city, and to California, it was intended to replace in the eyes of the world the image of a destroyed San Francisco. Organizers hoped the international exposition would increase tourism, settlement, and investment, and spur development and cement the Golden State as a trade gateway between Europe and Asia through the newly opened waterway.

The city’s audacity was rewarded when the subsequent years of intense labor culminated in the triumphant 1915 opening of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. "Just think of what they have done!" said Current Opinion magazine. "San Francisco nine years ago was in ruins. To-day it is rebuilt; and…they have brought into being at the same time this superb International Exposition…." The PPIE aspired to present no less than "a microcosm so nearly complete that if all the world were destroyed except the 635 acres of land within the Exposition gates, the material basis of the life of today could have been reproduced from the exemplifications of the arts, inventions and industries there exhibited," stated the Fair’s official history. Essentially, the Exposition attempted to "curate the planet," a concept that seems grandiose and naïve by modern standards, yet was magnificent in its aspiration.

This Fair provides a lens through which to view the discoveries, celebrities, politics, arts, and zeitgeist of the era. Visitors could watch the assembly of a pair of Levi’s jeans or a brand new Ford, take in an avant-garde art display or listen to a speech by Teddy Roosevelt.

They could see a temple molded entirely from soap or a tiny rosebush made of gems—or butter. When tired of riding around a six-acre replica Grand Canyon or a five-acre model of the Panama Canal, attendees could ascend nearly three hundred feet into the sky in a "house" attached to a steel arm. If the midway did not attract, they could enjoy a daily rotation of bands, parades, pageants, and headlining entertainers, including bandmaster John Philip Sousa, renowned composer Camille Saint-Saëns, and flamboyant dancer La Loïe Fuller.

Even as the PPIE strove to present the finest of mankind’s products and achievements—a "comprehensive and representative contemporary record of the progress and condition of the human race," according to its director of exhibits—the Exposition also unintentionally exposed the evils of the era. Prurient shows and racist material were on display adjacent to booths offering delicacies, handicrafts, or the latest technologies. Radium, touted during the Fair as a source of bountiful clean power, eventually was proven lethal. The Palace of Education and Social Economy presented public health programs designed to improve quality of life around the world, but at least one ideology—eugenics—promoted what are now widely considered human rights abuses. And overshadowing every aspect of the PPIE was the Great War then engulfing half the globe.

With its moments of sublimity and iniquity, the PPIE also represented a tremendous enterprise, the collaboration of tens of thousands of individuals, many of whom were otherwise foes, who worked in concert toward a greater goal.

As US vice president Thomas Marshall said during his dedicatory visit to the Fair: "A people dies when it loses its vision, when it ceases to dream its dream, and when from its loins there come forth no more pioneers or pathfinders." Exploring the wonders of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition allows us to celebrate the dreamers, pioneers, and pathfinders of that era, and to draw parallels with the visionaries of our own epoch.

The goals of the fair, which ran from February 20 to December, 1915, transcended any expected economic boost for the city. In the exposition’s official history, published in 1921, San Francisco journalist Frank Morton Todd reflected on a lofty ambition: "to produce in San Francisco a microcosm so nearly complete that if all the world were destroyed except the 635 acres of land within the Exposition gates, the material basis of the life of today could have been reproduced from the exemplifications of the arts, inventions and industries there exhibited." 1

Less than half a century before the fair opened, San Francisco had transformed itself from a small frontier town to a bustling city boasting the most active mint in the nation. 2 Drawing, perhaps, on this past success, civic leaders rose to the challenge to create a new identity for a city ravaged by natural disaster—a cultural and economic hub capable of playing a major role in regional, national, and international affairs.

Perseverance and Fortitude

From the first proposal in 1904 to erect a commemorative fair in San Francisco, local businessmen were undaunted in their pursuit to acquire the necessary funds. Of the nearly $50 million it cost to build the fair, the city and state gave approximately $17.5 million. Concessionaires and exhibitors accounted for the rest. 3 Fair planners matched this optimism. Although three sites were originally intended to house the fairgrounds, the planners selected Harbor View, a marshy section of the city’s northern shore known today as the Marina District. In just three years, laborers cleared the area of structures and debris and filled the mud flats with sand dredged from the bay. Though the excavation did not match that of the Panama Canal in scope and complexity, the fair’s boosters drew parallels with the Herculean efforts to build the canal. Perham Nahl’s image of a muscular Hercules parting the continents to form the canal appeared on the cover of the official guide book and as a poster. Nahl titled his lithograph The Thirteenth Labor of Hercules, a reference to the canal itself, more than fifty years in the making.

The city even confronted the global effects of World War I and local strife from political scandal, labor unrest, and prevailing biases of race, gender, and class while hosting the fair—a grand citadel of eleven exhibition palaces, twenty-one foreign pavilions, forty-eight state buildings, and a 65-acre amusement zone.

Talent and Ingenuity

In its technological, artistic, and architectural innovations, the PPIE offered fairgoers an experience unlike their encounters at past world’s fairs. According to historical geographer Gray Brechin, the site plan itself was "one of the most brilliant layouts ever created for a world’s fair" and was innovative to a remarkable degree: in its compact design, illumination, color scheme, and building materials and architectural styles. 4

Indeed, the fairground was a mini-metropolis of inspirational architecture and design, destined, like all world’s fairs, for eventual demolition. But so compelling was its effect on visitors that preservation efforts began before the fair even closed. Organizations such as the Exposition Preservation League, led by Phoebe Apperson Hearst, honorary president of the exposition’s Woman’s Board, saved some of the fair’s artifacts from demolition.

No artifact has inspired more passion than the beloved Palace of Fine Arts, constructed to exhibit works of art and the only fair building still situated on its original site. Designed by Bernard Maybeck (1862–1957), the Palace was a tour de force of technical and inspirational architecture. In its Greco-Romanesque rotunda, grounds, and colored exhibition walls, Maybeck aspired to find "forms of architecture and gardening for the general composition of the Fine Arts Palace and lake that will best convey the same impression to the heart and mind as those impressions made by the works of art inside." 5

Among its many attractions, the fair boasted the world’s largest wood and steel building (the Palace of Machinery), the largest state building (the California Building), a juried exhibition described as the nation’s best modern art collection (the Palace of Fine Arts), the first transcontinental telephone call (made by Alexander Graham Bell to the fairgrounds before the fair opened), and indirect lighting for outdoor effects used for the first time at an exposition.

Complementing the spectacular illuminations were "jewels" of polished crystal and colored glass accentuating architectural features, most visibly on the 43-stories-tall Tower of Jewels, giving the fair its nickname, the Jewel City.

"Audacious San Francisco"

Almost 19 million fairgoers found inspiration, education, and amusement in the ten months of the fair’s duration—about 450,000 attending on closing day. 6 If we could see the fair through their eyes, collectively and individually, what might we learn and understand about our urban centers today?

As architectural historian Laura A. Ackley has observed: "The overwhelming message of the PPIE, mounted a veritable instant after the tragedy of the 1906 earthquake and fire, is one of an optimistic, audacious San Francisco, not unlike the city of today. . . . San Francisco’s Jewel City was the realization of the common dream of many individuals, a goal achieved." 7

I recently purchased a Toi et Moi engagement ring from the art of jewels and it's absolutely stunning. Adi, the owner, was incredibly attentive and brought my vision to life perfectly after discussing my ideas over the phone. The craftsmanship and quality are exceptional, and every detail was meticulously executed. Thank you, Art of Jewels, for creating a piece that is not only beautiful but also holds so much sentimental value. I highly recommend Art of Jewels for exquisite jewelry and top-notch customer service.

An amazing experience for the new love of my life. The ring has six stone on each side of the main stone for the 6 kids in our new blended family. I bought it while deployed for the DOD in Haiti and the entire process was smooth and very customer focused. When the ring arrived I was blown away by the beauty and brilliance of the stones and the setting. It exceeding expectations and filled my future wife with joy as we start our new life together. Be confident in this team as they will take care of your jewelry needs and then so much more. We both are very happy.

Adi and AOJ have the absolute best selection of stones that we have found, with the best price. We ended up going with an emerald cut, lab-created diamond from AOJ, with one of their settings. Tracking the order was simple, and when we called to check on the ship date, Adi offered to upgrade our shipping on the house. The ring was just received yesterday, and after careful consideration, the setting wasn't quite what I wanted. My fiancee called Adi, who immediately said we could get it changed out-- no problem. I looked through their selection, and with a little research on my own, picked out a setting I believe will make this ring feel more like "me" than I ever could've imagined. The stone itself is absolutely gorgeous, and everything I liked about it from the website, rings true in person. I've added a photo of the original ring, and will update once the new setting is achieved. So far, I 100% recommend AOJ and their team!!

The pricing for their center stones is unbeatable but the quality of their ring was not up to my standards. I spoke to 3 different people via chat, email and phone and did not get the sense that they were going to help they kept claiming that the setting was meant to be like that and told me to submit a customization form instead of helping me fix it. They did offer to have my ring mailed back to them but unfortunately due to the poor customer service and being unsure if a new setting was going to solve my issues with safety and durability I did not want to take the chance. I also saw that they were not responsible for lost or damaged items which added onto my mistrust of their process. It may have been my wants were too high but I want to wear my ring daily and not be afraid of how durable it is. Dawn in the marketing team did say they would have preferred I expressed my concerns by email but after multiple people failed to help me in a caring manner I was to frustrated to argue with someone to fix things for me or acknowledge my concerns. Dawn did apologize for the bad customer experience and provided some insight on why I did not get the experience I hoped for when speaking with people at their company. I am hoping that they will implement changes for future customers

The pricing for their center stones is unbeatable but the quality of their rings is poor. To make it worse I reached out to get this fixed and they said that their setting was supposed to be that thin giving my center stone no security. The center stone was barely attached to the band. They offered to replace it but since they never acknowledged how the setting was poor quality and not secure I did not trust that any other setting would truly make a difference. They also make you send this back by normal unsecured mail and say they are not responsible for any lost or damaged items instead of investing in higher security shipping to fix their mistakes. The setting pictures they have online are not the same as their CAD design and they don't disclose this to you. Overall I got what I paid for I guess and I ended up taking it to a local jeweler to get my center stone reset into a sturdy reliable setting. Customer service is not great quality of the settings is even worse I would not recommend.

I know there are multiple jewerly stores in the bay area but art of jewels is fantastic! I made purchases through their online portal because I recently moved away from the bay. Let me say that the customer service (anna) , on top of price and craftmanship is phenomenal!! Cant beat it anywhere else. The store and representatives really cares for the customer and their special occasion. I would recommend them to all of my friends looking for the perfect jewelry (one of my best friend is going to make a purchase through them this month and super excited for them) ! Thank you

I just got engaged a few days ago and I am OBSESSED with my ring. AofJ I can't thank you enough for creating the magical stunning ring. I wasn't in on the customer service but from what my fiancé said it was top tier and easy.

My ring

Ordered a custom diamond/setting combo and they contacted me to say that the diamond I had picked was actually not a good one. They explained that it would look like a piece of glass and not shine properly which I respected. They suggested another (cheaper) diamond which they said would be much better. Was supposed to get a refund of ~$2500 on May 22 but after calling and contacting them for literally 3 weeks they finally said there was an issue with their accounting department and supposedly processed the return when I threatened fraud with AMEX. A few days later...magically on the 30 day of the return policy....I got the refund. Now I am stuck with a crap ring that still looks like glass and that I cannot do anything with. Did they follow their stated policy? Absolutely. Would I recommend them to anyone? Absolutely not.

We ordered from Art of Jewels on their website on 3/16/23. My ring shipped 3/28 and arrived 3/30. Such a huge selection of settings that were really hard to choose between! Their lab diamond prices were way better than Rare Carat or Ritani, which are some of the leading websites for lab diamond engagement rings. I'm so glad we went with Art of Jewels instead! I'm in love with my ring. You've made a customer for life

This review will be long-winded as I want to be very thorough in my honest review of AOJ. My experience began on the 13th of September when my husband and I placed an order for our 10-year anniversary upgrade. On the 15th I asked if it was possible to see a video of the stone we ordered as I was worried the bowtie might be too strong. I was told "The video is taken under 30x. After each order, our team will quality-check the diamond. We will make sure that it's 100% eye-clean. Every oval will have a Bow Tie. It's part of our QC process. If there is anything wrong with the diamond we will reject it." Well ... we finally received the ring after needing to postpone our belated anniversary trip and as suspected, the bowtie was very extreme and the setting was not up to par. To be clear, despite the quality of the stone and setting, the shipping delay was NOT of any fault of AOJ, and Adi did go above in tracking the shipment down. I reached out to AOJ about the quality on the 3rd of October and stated that the bowtie was extreme, that the setting was crooked, and that the metal felt very lightweight and cheap. I attached pictures and stated I was willing to pay for a completely new setting if I needed to. I also provided the specs of exactly what I was looking for. Adi then suggested a phone call, but with my schedule, I was unable to make it work, so I again emailed the exact specs I was looking for. On the 6th of October, I asked to be advised on how to do an exchange and asked if we could do a virtual appointment so I could view some stones that might be of better quality. Adi responded, "he did not see any significant bow tie in the diamond. Every oval will have one. Yours is minor. From the image you sent, your diamond looks to have no Bow tie. In his opinion and the QC's opinion, the diamond was perfect." I responded by sending the photos again, as well as stating, "you can very CLEARLY see the bow tie is significant. I am not sure how it ever passed your QC." Adi responded that he suggested going on a call a long time ago It had been 3 days, and restating the same thing I had in two previous emails seemed redundant to me. I responded via email, "Please advise on how to exchange the stone - for one of your own picking that the quality doesn't look like this." After some back and forth, Adi agreed to QC two stones and sent me the link to customize a new ring. He also stated they would send a link with the difference between the cost of the first ring and the new one. I immediately sent in the customization request for the new setting through the link Adi sent me that day, and over the next several days, I was sent a few different CAD markups after sending additional images in. On the 19th, I received videos of the new stone. I thanked Adi for tracking the new stone down, that I was very happy with the final CAD sent, and asked what the next steps were. On the 20th, I asked again for a payment link for the new ring. I promptly paid it once I received it, and shipped the first ring back to them on the 23rd as Adi specified to not ship it over the weekend. On the 29th, I reached out via email for a status update as the order progress in the backend of my account wasn't showing any progression and I wasn't sure if the process was a little quicker this go round since the CAD had already been approved and the stone was in their possession for 11 days at that point. Adi had also indicated during our phone call (on the 22nd) that the ring would be completed "this week". On the 31st Tina stated the ring would not be ready to be shipped for this weekend, that they would not rush and compromise the quality, and that Adi wasn't part of the manufacturing or QC departments. That seemed strange as he is the owner? I wrote back and asked for clarification as I wasn't understanding how the quality would be compromised when a part of the process for the time it usually takes for completion had already been done prior to the casting. Only after I probed for this clarification was I told that the ring had gone into casting on the 23rd, and the casting failed on the 25th, so the ring needed to be recast. That she would know something about the expected completion date after 4:30 PST the following day and would be in touch. I never heard from her the following day. 2nd of November, Lisa reached out to me to let me know they expected it to be complete by the following day. They did and they overnighted the ring to me at no additional charge. I received it on the 3rd and upon inspection, the head of the setting is shifted slightly to the left which you can see by the distance the prongs are to my wedding band on the left vs the right, and the prongs are pegs instead of claws as I requested, paid for and the CAD I approved reflected. QC could be improved. At this point, I'm keeping the ring so I can have the stone reset by a local jeweler because the stone itself is significantly better than the first one.

After 104 years of successful family jewelry making , we have decided to call it a day. All our customers have given us so much, we have been so lucky and now it is time to return gratitude in the form of high jewelry at very affordable prices before we close for good.

Of course, although we are closing our physical shop on the 1st of May 2024 , the online shop will remain open until the 31st of December 2024 as will our customer service. Due to the prices and discounts we have set, we will probably run out of stock before the end of 2023 , so we will be available for one more year for any queries or returns.

There are different ways to check it, we recommend the following options:

- Make an XFR Report to check with technology the chemical composition of the jewel.

- Check that the jewel incorporates its certificate of quality and authenticity .

- Take the jewel to a trusted jewelry shop for its study.

Certainly! Here are some recommendations for keeping your 925 silver, gold, and precious gemstone jewelry in good condition:

For 925 Silver Jewelry:

Regular cleaning: Use a jewelry polishing cloth or a soft cloth to clean the silver and remove excess dirt. Avoid contact with chemicals: Remove your jewelry before applying lotions, perfumes, or cleaning products to prevent silver oxidation. Proper storage: Store your jewelry in a cool, dry place. Use jewelry bags or boxes with anti-tarnish lining to prevent oxidation.

For Gold Jewelry:

Gentle cleaning: Clean gold jewelry with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid using hard brushes that may scratch the surface. Avoid contact with abrasive substances: Remove jewelry before engaging in activities that may expose it to abrasive substances, such as exercise or intensive cleaning. Separate storage: Store gold jewelry separately to avoid scratches. You can use soft fabric bags or boxes with compartments.

For Gemstone Jewelry:

Delicate cleaning: Clean gemstones with a soft brush immersed in warm water and mild soap. Dry them carefully. Avoid impacts and scratches: Store gemstone jewelry in places where they won't come into contact with other hard pieces that could damage them. Regular inspection: Regularly check the setting of gemstones to ensure they are secure. Remember that each type of jewelry may require specific care, so it's advisable to follow the manufacturer's instructions or consult with a professional jeweler if you have any doubts.

Determining the size of a ring is crucial to ensure a comfortable fit. Here are some recommendations for measuring your ring size:

Visit a jeweler: The most accurate way to determine your ring size is to visit a jewelry store and request a professional measurement. Jewelers use specialized tools to obtain an accurate measurement.

Use a ring sizer: You can purchase a ring sizer, which is a thin strip with marked sizes. Place the sizer on the finger where you plan to wear the ring and adjust until you find a comfortable fit.

Measure an existing ring: If you already have a ring that fits well on the finger where you plan to wear the new ring, you can measure its inner diameter with a ruler. Then, use a ring size chart to find the corresponding size.

Do it yourself with thread or paper: Wrap a piece of thread around the finger and mark the point where it meets the end. Measure the length of the thread with a ruler and use a size chart to find your size.

Consider the temperature: Ambient temperature can affect the size of your fingers. It's advisable to measure your ring size in a climate similar to the one where you'll regularly wear the jewelry.

Remember that it's important to measure the size on the finger where you plan to wear the ring, as sizes can vary between fingers. Additionally, keep in mind that wider rings tend to have a tighter fit, so you may need to choose a slightly larger size for wider rings.

Due to our retirement we offer Free Shipping nationwide . You will receive your jewelry in 24-48 hours .

Monday to Saturday 10:30-6 Sunday 11-6

*** PERMANENTLY CLOSED ***

Gallery of jewels began as a dream shared by two.

That dream has since grown to encompass the shared vision and commitment of 14 dedicated employees. Gallery of Jewels was conceived as a place to showcase Ornaments by Dona, the fledgling fashion jewelry company founded by owners Bill Hoover and Dona Taylor, and the jewelry of five of Dona’s designer friends. What began as a small operation in 1990 has since expanded into two unique galleries showcasing the work of over 100 talented artists. Though the scale of the concept along with the number of staff has grown, the Gallery of Jewels mission has remained the same since its inception: build a strong artistic community, support those artists to the fullest, and bring quality jewelry to our clientele.
