Terrible experience. They don't even deserve a single star. Here is what happened. On 4.9.2018 I engaged Seven Seas Yacht Transport to move a 37' Boston Whaler fishing vessel from St Thomas, USVI to Ft Lauderdale, FL. The boat was promised to be delivered in May and wound up arriving in late July. The boat was received by Shane Mancuso with Mancuso Marine who did an inspection and found a number of areas damaged on the boat. See Exhibit A - Invoice I then began reaching out to Dmitry Farber with Seven Seas to find a resolution. I have been given the runaround ever since. Finally in early February of 2019 I was contacted by the shipping agent in St Thomas who did the actual shipping work and found out that Seven Seas never paid them either. Here are some of email correspondences with Dmitry Farber. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dimitry, I've made numerous attempts to contact you with no luck. Ultimately I need to know what your willing to do about the damage to my boat. You have all the pictures. Advise ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Jesse, Sorry for not getting back to you until now and for making you wait all this time. I would like to make it right. I sent request to my agent in St Thomas to get me a condition report and photos of the boat upon pick up in St Thomas. I also checked with my loadmaster who says that there was no damages reported during loading and unloading on our vessel. I conclude that if damages did occur then likely they could have occurred during transfer by captain between St Thomas and Tortola. What do you think happened based on nature of damages? Im really not sure what happened. My theory is the captain hit the bottom at some point which is what would have caused the hull damage and the stabilizer to be ripped off. It looked like on the trailer and other hull damage near the anchor that when they dropped the boat on the trailer it smashed the trailer and caused the trailer to rub up on the hull. Maybe they dropped it to hard on the trailer? I have a captain that picked up the boat and he is also a mechanic so if it is useful Id be happy to connect you with him and he can give you his ideas. We had to wait for St Thomas agent to clear any light on this situation and person in charge Tracy had taken a maternity leave for 90 days and just returned last week She can't seem to confirm what could have happened to cause these damages besides speculating that it was a delivery captain's fault during moving her from St Thomas to Tortola. Captain is not responding to us.

Dear Jesse, we have shipped your boat once before and all went well showing that we care and can do our job well. It is never fun to leave the boat for a year and note damages on the boat after receiving her later. We take each damage claim very seriously and work with clients to find a resolution. Our record is less then 2% damages for shipped boats and we ship apprx 400 boats per year. We have investigated the incident with our agent in St Thomas who was in charge of arranging pick up of your boat from St Thomas yard and delivery to Tortola anchorage alongside our transport vessel. Agent (St Thomas Cargo) provided definite confirmation that boat did have preexisting damages to the hull prior to pick up. In March we had refunded you over 2,000 USD as good faith to help you offset some of the expenses even though there was no clear evidence that Seven Seas had caused these damages. Under normal conditions, we would direct client to file insurance claim and follow procedures listed by underwriters to file a claim. We wanted to settle this matter directly to expedite refund process and to save you a deductible. After studying this case in detail, I see some discrepancies: It appears that trailer was in poor condition at the time when it was received by Seven Seas or our agent Traci. Having a trailer in poor condition attributed to majority of the damages listed on your estimate. We did not handle boat on trailer and when boat was offloaded from our ship, I believe she went into the water upon unloading from cargo vessel in Florida Regarding trim - there is not physical way for our captains to rip it apart during move from St Thomas or for our loading team / loadmaster to damage it during lift Lifting slings do not go anywhere close to where trim tab is and captain who ran the boat from St Thomas to Tortola did not report any damages or issues while boat was in his control. Traci confirmed that delivery captain did not report any issues and he is obligated to report if he ran aground or caused damage while in control of the boat. Our loadmaster ( I checked with him again Charles Delbridge +1-305-332-4728 and you may call him to verify) also confirmed that no damages happened during loading / unloading. I also checked with vessel captain / master and chief officer - they did not report any damages during loading or unloading. All of these parties are obligated by report any issues to us immediately and provide a damage report as standard protocol This raises a question if there is a possibility of these damages being preexistent before we took possession of the boat. When boat was picked up, we informed that it needed a new battery which means it sat a while without use Can we look at the issue objectively and answer these questions together: What happened between May 2017 until May 2018 in St Thomas? Irma and Maria came though in September 2017 and a lot of storage yards and boats took damages Was boat used or in storage for a year or used and what could have caused damages to trailer or rendering it to be in poor condition? When did you see the boat last before shipping took place in June 2018 and do you have photos showing condition of the boat taken shortly before loading? Is it possible that damages to trim tab or theft occurred while boat was in the storage yard as part of storm damage or other reason? As per evidence from Traci (St Thomas agent) Item 1 on the estimate relating to trailer repairs is pre-existing damage Item 3 on the estimate is also related to preexisting damage from trailer and she mentions that there were preexisting damages to the hull +++++++++++++ Here is my input on the first 2 pictures: The white spot on the port bow in the blue hull paint existed prior to me taking possession of the vessel. The roller on the trailer was already bent when I took possession of the boat and trailer. I was astonished to see the condition of the trailer when we launched the boat into the water. The carpet no longer covered the wood supports and screw tips (the pointy ends) were exposed toward the hull of the Boston Whaler. I took pictures of the trailer while it was still in the water.

I just got back to California from Miami after dropping my new boat off at the Seven Seas chartered ship, and so far it has been SEAMLESS!! Dimitry was stupid patient with all of my panic stricken questions, I realize now that this is not like moving from house to house, tons of moving parts. The surveyor of the ship, Louis Marino was again very patient with us and went out of his way to help. THANK YOU LOUIS! The ship is now hauling ass towards the Panama Canal then towards Ensenada. I will follow up later with update. So far GREAT JOB!! THANKS PS bring lots of fenders for when your boat is against the ship

Seven Seas Yacht Transport has been a very professional and reliable company. Seven Seas Yacht Transport moved my 40 foot sailboat from New York to Oregon and handled every step of the way with competence. The few problems that were encountered were dealt with quickly and professionally. Shipping costs were very reasonable. This is an outstanding transport company managed by great people. Do not hesitate to use them for yacht transport.

WE had an agreement to ship a 85 ft Yacht from Genoa to Miami and on the very last day before the ship was supposed to leave they told us they could only ship it to the Caribbean instead. So, we had to send a crew to drive it 1200 nautical miles which cost us an extra $20,000 of what was quoted. Do not trust these guys! Read the fine print on their contracts...you are at their complete mercy on every shipment.

Dear Patrick, we are sorry that you had a negative experience prompting you to write this review. After yacht was discharged in Antigua safely, Patrick called me few times on other projects asking to help him move additional yachts. I am not sure what later prompted him to to leave a negative review. I contacted him multiple times to try to discuss it the issue was resolved and what we can do to resolve it. He never replied to any of my inquiries. Up to this date, we are open to his call. While it is impossible as a business owner to keep everyone 100% satisfied, we always try our best to follow up and resolve any issues. It should be noted respectfully, that Patrick's narrative is not exactly accurate and contains some false facts as well as it omits the full story which must be disclosed to have a full understanding of this project. It is correct, we did have agreement to ship 85 Azimut from Genoa to Florida. We advised 14 days before intended departure (not 1 day before) that due to yacht's weight and equipment issues at Port Miami, Miami port terminal operator in Florida had come back to us saying that they would be unable to lift the yacht of the ship upon arrival. This was a complete surprise to us as we had previously offloaded 88 Ferretti and other similar size yachts with same terminal operator in Miami. Apparently they were having equipment issues at the terminal at that time. We offered alternative option to ship the yacht with lift on / lift off yacht carrier ex Genoa to Antigua for a discount of over 20,000 USD from initial freight agreed to allow Patrick's client to bring his yacht back from Caribbean to Florida. Patrick asked his client if this option would work and responded that it would be fine. We had client sign addendum to contract stating that they are accepting revised / discounted rate and revised discharge port. Client also told us that they would like this option because they can spend few days in the Caribbean to enjoy their yacht and that 20,000 USD discount is fine to bring the yacht to Florida. Additionally, we also paid 3500 USD to cover costs of berthing and crew to move the yacht to loading as additional incentive. We had really done everything that was asked of us and decision to switch discharge port to Antigua was welcomed by both client and broker. Later in September of 2016, same client (Josh Wilske) purchased another yacht in Europe (Spain to be exact) through another broker and contracted Seven Seas to transport Maiora 23 from Spain to Ft Lauderdale Boat show.

They dont deserve even 1 star. Unreliable, late and yacht got damaged.

Client of mine needed a referral to get the yacht he just purchased in Miami transported to Dubai. I got Dmitry's card at a networking event and passed it on to my client. I'm glad I did. My client was very happy. I will definitely recommend Seven Seas again.

The 109m/357'7" motor yacht 'Seven Seas' was built by Oceanco in the Netherlands at their Alblasserdam shipyard. Her interior is styled by Dutch designer design house Sinot Yacht Design and she was delivered to her owner in July 2023. This luxury vessel's exterior design is the work of Sinot Yacht Design.

Seven Seas has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to 14 guests in 7 suites. She is also capable of carrying up to 35 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.

The 2001-built Seven Seas Mariner cruise ship is the second-oldest of RSSC-Regent boats, together with the "old-timers" Navigator (1999) and Voyager (2003).

The vessel (IMO number 9210139) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 311622000) and registered in Nassau .

History - construction and ownership

Regent Cruises (officially Regent Seven Seas Cruises / RSSC ) is an all-inclusive, top-luxury cruise brand fka "Radisson Seven Seas". Until 2014, the company (as part of "Prestige Cruise Holdings") was owned by Apollo Management LP - one of the world's largest private investment equity funds. Since September 2014, RSSC and the sister company Oceania Cruises are owned by NCL Norwegian (shipowner), acquired at the total cost of USD 3 billion. Regent cruise ships are medium-sized, with capacity up to 800 passengers. The fleet consists of 6-star rated all-suite and all-balcony vessels with a space-to-guest ratio around 70 and staff-to-guest ratio 1-to-1,6 (some of industry's best). As building cost per berth , RSSC liners are among the world's most expensive ships.

The 700-passenger ship Seven Seas Mariner was the world's first 100% balcony 100% suite cruise ship. In an era where cruise vessels and guests practically require their own zip codes, RSSC introduced a completely retro concept: mid-size liners with reduced capacity to emphasize on personalized service and larger public spaces . Although Regent Mariner debuted in 2001, it has been kept in perfect condition as the company frequently pours lots of money into refurbishments. The January 2009 drydock, for example, cost USD 20+ million.

Decks and Cabins

Seven Seas Mariner staterooms (354 total, in 14 Suite categories) and all cabins (100%) have private step-out balconies. The largest accommodations are the Master Suites (1210 ft2 / 112 m2 plus 375 ft2 / 35 m2 terrace).

Regent Mariner cruise deals offer all-inclusive luxury prices – and some of the most expensive rates available on the top luxury cruise travel vacation market. The cost of Seven Seas Mariner cruise in a Master Suite accommodation provides the ultimate Regent Mariner luxury packages for one of the ship’s two best passenger accommodations (located on Deck 9). The lowest cabin category is “Deluxe Suite” (about 3 times cheaper than the Master Suite’s fares).

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Compass Rose restaurant is the main dining room on Seven Seas Mariner. It functions on an open seating basis and offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner without set dining assignments. La Veranda is ship's daytime buffet, serving breakfast and lunch. In the evening it is transformed into a bistro serving Mediterranean cuisine. The speciality steak house Prime 7 is free of charge but requires reservations for dinner. Dinner is served alfresco on Mariner's pool deck at least once during each cruise. Another choice for casual lunch is the poolside grill. Dinner can be ordered from the MDR menu during restaurant hours to be served en suite.

Signatures (French speciality restaurant, dinner-only, reservations-only; in 2016 replaced by Regent Cruises new Chartreuse speciality restaurant with traditional French cuisine)
Pool Grill (fast food bar, poolside; serves the pool deck area)
Prime 7 (reservations-only dinner restaurant with American Steakhouse menu)
La Veranda / Sette Mari (casual dining venue; operates as ship’s self-service buffet restaurant; in the evenings, the buffet transforms into “Sette Mari” Italian dinner restaurant, complimentary).

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

Seven Seas Mariner cruise ship is an ideal blend - both big enough to offer roomy, cruise-like facilities and little enough to feel comfortable at the same time. With a double-time-occupancy capacity of seven hundred passengers onboard, it sports an exclusive passenger-to-space ratio of 71.43 and a none-too-shabby passenger-to-crew ratio of 1.57. Тravelers do not have to hesitate, because even the bottommost accommodations are suites, and each cabin has its own veranda.

Itineraries

Seven Seas Mariner itinerary program is based on luxury World Cruises visiting exotic ports in the regions of South Pacific, South America, South Africa (departing from Cape Town ), and the Caribbean (out of Miami ). In the summer, Mariner cruises in Europe on Mediterranean itineraries from Civitavecchia-Rome , Venice , Barcelona , with Transatlantic repositioning crossings.

The Regent Mariner ship was built in St Nazaire France and is the fleet's second of all three vessels providing ultra-inclusive "big yacht" luxury cruise vacation experiences.

Regent Mariner's itinerary calendar features a diverse set of sailing routes and destinations on 5 continents. The ship operates in In Europe (Mediterranean Sea), South Africa, around South America, in the South Pacific (including Australia, New Zealand and Tahiti).

Regent Seven Seas Navigator is among the top-luxury World Cruise ships offering each year an Around The World itinerary. It includes up to 30 different countries and numerous exotic ports of call in Asia, Australia, South America, Caribbean, Africa, also Transatlantic crossings, Panama Canal and/or Suez Canal transits.

On September 2, 2014, NCL Norwegian purchased the company "Prestige Cruise Holdings" (owner of Oceania Cruises and RSSC) for USD 3,025 billion, thus becoming the official owner of all vessels in both fleets.

In mid-April 2016, RSSC announced upgraded fares adding free international flights to all 2017-2018 cruise itineraries. These are round-trip air travel deals (business class) added to the company's signature (standard) all-inclusive package - wines, spirits, soda, water, unlimited internet, free shore excursions, prepaid gratuities, pre-post cruise hotel stays and transfers. The air-inclusive cruise deals involve international flights leaving from 26 cities (the USA and Canada), regardless of the suite category booked.

The company Apollo Group provides all RSSC ships with the entire onboard hotel product and services. This includes administration, food staff (preparation and serving), housekeeping staff, also vessel's provisioning and crewing. Other cruise lines served by Apollo are Thomson UK (Marella Cruises) and Oceania .

Seven Seas Mariner refurbishment 2018 review

The ship's last drydock refurbishment (March 15 - April 3, 2018) was done in Marseille France (at Chantier Naval de Marseille). The 20-day project completed RSSC's fleet renovation program budgeted USD 125 million. Ship's upgrades and updates included new food menus, renovated and redesigned cabins, completely renovated public areas.

Deck 6's outdoor area received new teak decking and furniture (sun loungers).
Pool Deck was comprehensively redesigned and received new teak flooring. The swimming pool received new mosaic tiles and broader ledge in its shallow water area for sun lounging.
Pool deck's outdoor dining was upgraded with new/expanded lunch options, which include prime steaks, chops, sausages, seafood (salmon), chicken. The "fast food" is cooked a la minute at the new infrared BBQ grills and new buffet food bars now part of the Pool Grill restaurant.
The Atrium, walkways and public spaces received new carpeting, furniture, decors, art.
The Library was remodelled and received new dark-wood bookshelves, updated furnishings, new chandelier.
The Connoisseur Club (indoor smoking lounge) received a new colour scheme.
Promenade Deck 6 (outdoor area) received new teak flooring.
Canyon Ranch SpaClub was re-designed and received new (pebble-stone) tiling in treatment rooms.
The Gymnasium (fitness and aerobics studio) were upgraded with new equipment.
Compass Rose Restaurant received new crystal chandeliers, recessed ceiling lighting, comfortable leather chairs, new tables, new plush drapes.
Chartreuse Restaurant is a new speciality dining venue serving modern French cuisine. It replaced the old Signatures Restaurant.
Extensive renovations received also the Reception/lobby area (new marble desks, new original artwork), Card Room, Coffee Connection (expanded by taking some space from the Library), Casino, shops.

On March 22, 2023, Regent opened for booking the brand's ever-longest World Voyage (themed "The Sense of Adventure") planned for the Mariner ship.

The 154-night (5-month-long) itinerary departs from Miami (Florida USA) on January 10, 2026, includes 431 free tours/shore excursions, and visits 77 destinations (ports and islands, including 16 overnight ports and 47 UNESCO sites) in 41 countries on 6 continents. The route includes 3 new for RSSC ports - two islands in New Caledonia (Lifou, Mare) and Indonesia's Waingapu (on Sumba Island/East Nusa Tenggara).

World Voyage 2026's prices varied between USD 95,000 per person with double occupancy (Deluxe Veranda) and USD 266,500 pp (Master Suite).

RSSC World Cruise 2025 (Seven Seas Mariner)

Regent's "Navigate The World Away In Wonder" (World Cruise 2025 scheduled for Seven Seas Mariner) is a 168-night itinerary departing roundtrip from PortMiami.

The voyage visits 106 destinations (ports and islands) in 32 countries (including 48 UNESCO sites and 16 port overnights), 5 continents, total navigation 36295 NM/nautical miles (41770 mi / 67220 km), 3 oceans, 12 waterways (seas, gulfs, bays, straits, channels), 395 total shore excursions (all complimentary). Maiden destinations for RSSC (visited during the voyage) are two - Robinson Crusoe Island (Chile) and Muroran (Japan Iburi Subprefecture, Hokkaido Island).

Bookings were officially opened on June 15, 2022. Prices ranged from USD 87000 per person (Deluxe Veranda Suite with double occupancy) to USD 250,000 pp (Master Suite).

Curiously, World Cruise 2025 was sold out prior to June 15th.

RSSC World Cruise 2024 (Seven Seas Mariner)

In July 2021 Regent introduced Mariner's "Moments In Time" (later renamed "Navigate The World") voyage planned for 2024. The 132-night itinerary is scheduled to depart roundtrip from Miami (January 6 through May 17, 2024) and explore the regions of Central America, West Coast USA, Hawaii, South Pacific Islands, Australia-New Zealand, Asia (Southeast, Middle East, India), Europe (Mediterranean), Bermuda (Hamilton).

Seven Seas Mariner's World Voyage 2024 features ~34500 NM (~63900 km / 39700 mi) of navigation (3 oceans, 15 seas-straits-gulfs-bays), visiting 66 ports (31 different countries on 4 continents), 12 port overnights, total 442 shore excursions (all complimentary), total 61 UNESCO Sites, transitting Panama Canal and Suez Canal.

Signature destinations include Gondwana Rainforests (Australia), Goa's Churches and Convents (India), Medici Villas and Gardens (Tuscany Italy). California Yacht Club is located at: 4469 Admiralty Way, Marina del Rey, CA 90292 .

If driving, please park in the CYC visitor’s lot adjacent to Admiralty Way and accessed from the driveway which is between Café del Rey and the Warehouse Restaurant.
Once parked, proceed by foot and enter the member’s parking lot by passing by the main entry gate.
After passing the main entry gate, continue walking, bearing hard left along the chain link fence at the north end of the large parking lot until it ends at a dark green shade cloth covered rowing shed.
We meet, at the rowing sheds which are opposite the tall bamboo plants separating the Warehouse Restaurant and CYC.

Participants should bring: athletic shoes (running shoes), socks, shorts, shirts, sunscreen, water, a change of clothes,

towel and personal items (hats, sunglasses, orthotics, inhalers, etc).

To keep all the gear organized, a small duffel bag or back pack is recommended.

Clothes should fit reasonably tightly so while rowing, hands won’t get caught in shirts and shorts won’t get caught in the sliding seats.

Dressing in layers and using wicking type fabrics is recommended.

Peter Duncan and Relative Obscurity Return to the Podium as J/70 World Champion at California Yacht Club

Peter Duncan’s Relative Obscurity has prevailed over 60 other teams and challenging wind conditions to capture the 2021 J/70 World Championship title at California Yacht Club, today. In a five-day series that tested the skill and patience of top-notch competitors from 11 nations, Duncan – sailing with Willem van Waay, Morgan Trubovich and Victor Diaz de Leon – secured a top five position in the beginning of the regatta and never let go.

“I’m elated!” said Duncan as he returned to the dock, bustling with activity. “That was a tough day out there. We didn’t start very well but had a bit of a break with a header on the first run of the second race that let us get close to everybody and sail through some folks we need to sail through,” he explained. “We have a lot of fun onboard – joke and laugh and keep it light – and that worked in our favor when we had to grind through. Everybody knows what their job is, and these guys do them exceptionally well.”

The J/70 is 22.75 feet with an 11 foot long cockpit and deck-stepped carbon mast for easy rigging and stepping.

The crew shall consist of 3 or more persons. The number of crew shall not be changed during an event.

The J/70 Class has been created as a strict one-design Class where the true test when racing is between crews and not boats and equipment.

Well, chances are it will not be like Day 1 of the Pre-Worlds. Maybe more like Day 2. But then again, this is MdR—anything can happen.

Founded originally in 1922 by yachtsmen including Charles Hathaway and Frank Garbutt, the California Yacht Club's first clubhouse was built in Wilmington, CA in Los Angeles' inner harbor (berths nos. 192 & 193), just opposite Terminal Island. Close by were the yards of renowned yacht builders Wilmington Boat Works and Fellows & Stewart (second location). In the club's inaugural year, member yachtsmen formed the first Star class fleet on the Pacific coast. Involved in all aspect of the sport, the club has encouraged a variety of pleasure boating, first in Los Angeles Harbor, and now in Santa Monica Bay.

Over the years CYC has been the club for numerous prominent yachtsmen including Merritt Adamson, Pierpont Davis, Roy E. Disney, J. Paul Getty, Samuel K. Rindge, William Stewart, James Kilroy and navigator extraodinaire, Ben Mitchell. Movie mogul Cecil B. DeMille once served as a trustee of the club and donated a gold cup for powerboat racing. Comedy film producers Al Christie and Hal Roach were both deeply involved in club activities in the twenties and thirties.

Power boating has always been a part of the club's mission along with sailing and rowing. The first CYC powerboat regatta was run in 1922 and the winner was none less than the famous Gar Wood in his Harmsworth Trophy winner Miss America. CYC's Catalina Challenge race for powerboats has been run annually since 1922.

A fire on Thanksgiving Day, 1930 severely damaged the original clubhouse although the heroic efforts of some members saved all of the trophies.

In 1932, several CYC members figured prominently in the sailing events at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Owen Churchill, inventor of the SwimFin, won the gold medal in the Eight-Metre Class with Angelita.

Unfortunately, the club was forced to relinquish its key location in the East Basin to the Coast Guard for the war effort in 1941. A dormant period followed.

With the development of the long-awaited Marina Del Rey in the early 1960s, the club reformed in '63 and elected Fritz Overton, Commodore in 1923, as head of the "new" club. In 1966, they opened the modern clubhouse and marina facility that is their home today. The radial design of the building allows sweeping panoramic views of the marina.

The California Yacht Club is owned by the Hathaway family, owners of the Los Angeles Athletic Club. The annual "Great Catalina to Marina del Rey Rowing and Paddling Event" pays tribute to Charles Hathaway's row in 1976 from Catalina Island to the club on his 50th birthday.

The unique combination of private ownership and annually elected flag officers has worked well to establish California Yacht Club as one of the outstanding clubs in the nation.

In an instant, an overnight seaside blaze engulfed decades’ worth of boating trophies, historical artifacts and cherished memorabilia at the California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey on Monday.

Fire crews attempted to control the blaze as heavy smoke and flames consumed the two-story building. By the time they had subdued the fire two hours later, only the skeletal remnants of the clubhouse were left standing.

John Myers, senior vice president of the club, said the blaze had been reported by an employee working late in the clubhouse Monday night. The fire spared the remainder of the facilities on the ground, including the docks and the yachts moored there. But the clubhouse, and particularly its second floor, was all but wiped out.

“We are working closely with the Los Angeles County Fire Department in their investigation of the cause of the incident and will share those findings when they become available to us,” Myers said.

Members are left mourning, comparing the loss to the death of a loved one.

Jennifer Dakoske Koslu awoke in Rancho Mirage at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, before the sun had risen, to find her phone inundated with text messages from club members.

The first message she read simply stated, “The CYC is gone.”

“As soon as I opened my phone, it went to a link on the Citizen app and saw a video of the club burning. I was shocked,” Dakoske Koslu said.

For the last 24 years, Dakoske Koslu and her family have been dedicated members of the CYC, whose clubhouse is a few miles away from their home in Playa del Rey. She said it is where her children have grown up, familiarizing themselves with every inch.

“I remember taking my son there on the Fourth of July when he was just 3 weeks old. It was the first place we went with him as a newborn,” Dakoske Koslu said.

She and her husband biked to the club in the aftermath of the fire, greeted by the charred remains of the building on Wednesday afternoon.

“The destruction is unbelievable. It’s clear that the fire was burning intensely on the second floor,” Dakoske Koslu said. “There’s nothing left.”

The second floor once housed a collection of the club’s prestigious racing trophies, kept on display for members and visitors. The fire melted all but a single salvageable California Cup. Most notably, the priceless King of Spain Trophy, acquired in 1929 from King Alfonso XIII, was lost.

Additionally, the club lost cherished photographs of every past commodore, a significant position within a yacht club. Members said they didn’t know if anyone had digitized the images of the commodores or of the club’s founders.

“We would tell yachting stories at the bar around lots of memorabilia, and the yachting artifacts behind the bar are all gone now,” Tom Materna said. “The yacht club provided us a facility for the off-the-water celebrations after hard-fought competition on the water.”

The CYC dates to the early 1920s, started by boat owners from the Los Angeles Athletic Club and other yacht clubs. The Board of Harbor Commissioners approved the first clubhouse in 1922, designed by famed architect Edwin Bergstrom, co-designer of the Pentagon.

In 1965, the yacht club submitted a proposal for an all-encompassing $1-million, two-story, 10,000-square-foot clubhouse on four acres off Admiralty Way. Members envisioned a state-of-the-art facility with 170 boat slips, a guest dock, a small boat hoist and a dry land storage facility for boats. The clubhouse that resulted was dedicated on June 10, 1967.

Then-Commodore William A. DeGroot Jr. told The Times that the triangular parcel of land on which the clubhouse still sits is a “perfectly logical place for a club facility, and a commanding view down the main channel of the marina.”

Though the building has historical significance to its members, it does not have a historic designation, according to Linda Dishman, president of the Los Angeles Conservancy.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and so grateful for the outpouring of support from the community and our members,” Myers said. “CYC has been a beacon for the nautical community for the past 101 years.”

Materna, 68, first found out about the fire through Facebook as friends posted videos and photos of the damage Tuesday morning. Then he began receiving calls and text messages from friends.

“Everybody woke up in the morning and realized we’d lost a significant part of the sailing community,” Materna said.

His connection to the club dates back nearly 52 years, to when he was just 16 years old. After spending 30 years sailing professionally with Hobie Cats, mainly racing catamarans — a watercraft with two parallel hulls of equal size — he recently served as a crew member on other club members’ racing yachts.

The CYC is pivotal in the boat racing community, organizing and hosting events such as the Optimist National Championship and Junior Olympic trials, Materna said. He fondly remembers the hundreds of people from across the globe converging on the marina for similar events.

The main topic among members now is what’s next for the club. Dakoske Koslu noted that the club’s ownership changed over the last few years, and many are unsure and concerned about the club’s continuation after the fire.

The club relocated to the marina in 1967, leasing the land it sits on from the county.

“I don’t think the county has really valued the contributions of the California Yacht Club as an important part of the Marina. They value Trader Joe’s because it’s more money for them,” Dakoske Koslu said.

Dakoske Koslu said she’s seen numerous small marine-oriented businesses displaced from the marina, making way for more commercialized developments such as Trader Joe’s and Recreational Equipment Inc.

California Yacht Club was established in 1922 and boated its' first competitive rowing team back in the 1930's. In 1977, after a long hiatus, Stan Mullin, Ken Jacobs and Charles Hathaway reactivated rowing at the Club. CYC rowers now number about 60, and represent all abilities, ages and motivations.

Adult Rowing - California Yacht Club CYC is a great place for adults of all ages and skills to row out of Marina Del Rey. We have more than 60 active adult rowers with a wide range of interests and motivations varying from recreational, fitness, social, open water, and racing.

CYC Rowing - California Yacht Club - Rowing About us CYC Junior Rowing CYC offers a range of rowing programs suitable for girls and boys ages 12 - 18. CYC membership is not required to participate. Our junior rowing programs include: a highly successful competitive rowing team, a recreational program and private lessons.
