Green Point beach near Yamba littered with debris after abandoned boat runs aground

A remote beach near Yamba on the New South Wales north coast is littered with debris and diesel after a boat ran aground and was smashed to pieces in the surf overnight.

Witnesses said the boat was abandoned by its occupants as they were attempting to cross the Clarence River bar around lunchtime on Monday. 

NSW Road and Maritime said the occupants were evacuated from the vessel by a NSW Marine Rescue crew.

Angourie resident Oli Coe said he later saw the vessel adrift about 2 kilometres offshore.

He watched the boat throughout the day and at one point saw another vessel alongside it.

He said someone boarded vessel and put out its anchor.

"As the wind got up through the rest of the afternoon, we watched the boat drifting and dragging on its anchor and eventually it just dragged way too far and ended up on the beach," Mr Coe said.

At one stage Mr Coe and two friends used jetskis to get out to the boat to see if they could do anything to help.

He said he could not understand why it was not salvaged before it ran aground near Green Point.

"There was definitely some damage to the boat but it was in perfectly good condition [before that]," Mr Coe said.

Clean-up concerns

Locals spent Tuesday morning on the beach, dragging piles of debris above the high tide mark in a bid to ensure it is not taken back out to sea with the next high tide on Tuesday evening. 

Angourie resident Kim Wood said the usually pristine beach at Green Point looked like a "rubbish dump".

"I'm looking at kilometres of debris," she said.

"There is timber, there is oil cans, jerry cans full of diesel, so much plastic, and everything is soaked in diesel.

"You can still see all debris in the ocean."

Ms Wood said the area was home to a wide range of birdlife including oyster catchers and curlews.

Too dangerous to tow

NSW Maritime said the boat was deemed too dangerous for authorities to board or tow.

Senior boating safety officer Bret Ryan said authorities needed to put safety first.

"Marine Rescue revisited the boat several times on Monday, and eventually the Water Police came from Coffs Harbour," Mr Ryan said.

"They came to the same conclusion that it was too dangerous."

"At that point the vessel was secure and the hope was it would remain in that position but unfortunately that didn't happen."

Mr Ryan said the main hazard on the beach was from any sharp objects that might remain buried in the sand.

The city is divided by the River Oka into two major parts: the Upper city ( Verkhnyaya or Nagornaya chast ) on the hilly right side and the Lower city ( Nizhnyaya or Zarechnaya chast — what literally means "the part over the river") on the left bank of the river. The Upper city is the old historical part of Nizhny Novgorod, whereas the Lower city is larger, newer and consists of more industrial districts.

The city was founded by Grand Duke George II of Russia in 1221 at the confluence of two most important rivers of his principality, the Volga and the Oka. Its name literally means Newtown the Lower , to distinguish it from the older Novgorod . A major stronghold for border protection, Nizhny Novgorod fortress took advantage of a natural moat formed by the two rivers.

Along with Moscow and Tver, Nizhny Novgorod was among several newly founded towns that escaped Mongol devastation on account of its insignificance and grew up into important centers of Russian political life during the period of Tatar yoke. For a short period of time it was the capital of the Suzdal Principality and competed with Moscow for the power in the region. However the competition with Moscow was lost and in 1392 the city was incorporated into Muscovy. Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin was built in 1508-1511 (under supervision of the Italian fortress engineers) and became one of the strongest Russian citadels. There is a legend saying that the project was initially developed with participation of Leonardo da Vinci. However there is no documented proof of Leonardo's work for that project, the only thing the legend is based on is the striking resemblance of Leonardo's sketches and the actual Kremlin schemes. The fortress was strong enough to withstand Tatar sieges in 1520 and 1536.

In 1612, the so-called national militia , gathered by a local merchant Kuzma Minin and commanded by Knyaz Dmitry Pozharsky expelled the Polish troops from Moscow, thus putting an end to the Time of Troubles and establishing the rule of the Romanov dynasty.

In 1817, the Makaryev Monastery Fair, one of the liveliest in the world the 16th-18th centuries, was transferred to Nizhny Novgorod, which thereupon started to attract numerous visitors and by the mid-19th century it turned Nizhny Novgorod into trade capital of the Russian Empire.

Under the Soviet period, the trade connections of the city were abandoned and Nizhny Novgorod became an important industrial centre instead. During the communist time the city was closed to foreigners to safeguard the security of Soviet military research. The physicist and the Nobel laureate Andrei Sakharov was exiled there during 1980-1986 to limit his contacts with foreigners.

The climate in the region is humid continental and it is similar to the climate in Moscow , although colder in winter, which lasts from late November until late March with a permanent snow cover.

By car [ edit ]

Nizhny Novgorod is situated on the M7/E30 road. The road is in decent condition, although with traffic it can take anywhere from 4 to 8 hours to drive to/from Moscow .

By foot [ edit ].

The city centre is compact and walkable. However, there are many inclines or steps from the river banks. The bridges are not pedestrian friendly since the sidewalk is very narrow and cars drive extremely fast close to the pedestrians.

By city rail [ edit ]

The City Rail connects areas where there are no metro lines. Connects with the subway at the Moscow railway station. It has 2 lines: Sormovskaya and Priokskaya. The fare by train costs 28 rubles. According to the Citicard Transport Card, the fare is 26 rubles. Also by train you can get to the nearest suburb, or transfer to suburban trains to Dzerzhinsk, Bor, Semenov or Arzamas.

By bus and trolleybus [ edit ]

As of May 2017 in each district of the city there are several city bus routes. The number of trolleybus routes is much less. In one district of the city there are 1-2 trolleybus routes. Trolleybus routes are completely absent in the Leninsky city district. It is worth noting that trolleybuses do not connect the Lower City to the Upper. This is because the trolleybuses do not have enough power to climb the mountain.

The trolleybus network is divided into 3 parts:

• The upper trolleybus network (it unites all three districts - Nizhegorodsky, Sovetsky and Prioksky) with a turning circle on the Minin Square, near the Kremlin.
• The lower trolleybus network (connects Kanavinsky, Moskovsky and Sormovsky districts)
• The Avtozavod trolleybus network (connects all the distant sleeping microdistricts among themselves)

By tram [ edit ]

Throughout the city, land trams run. The longest route of all is 417. It connects the outskirts of Avtozavodsky district with the Moskovsky Rail Terminal. The journey takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. The route passes through the sleeping areas (approximately 75% of the way). Also in remote neighborhoods there are routes of several more trams, but in most cases, they are in the Upper City. By the way, you can reach there by tram 27 or 10 directly from the Moscow railway station.

By marshrutka [ edit ]

Marshrutkas do not stop at every stop. To indicate your intention to exit a marshrutka, press a button and to indicate your intention to enter a marshrutka en-route, you need to wave your hand.

By bicycle [ edit ]

Nizhny Novgorod has not very developed bicycle infrastructure. Special bike paths exist only on the Upper-Volga and Lower-Volga embankments and on Rozhdestvenskaya Street.

The upper city is very hilly and full of steep inclines and even many locals will get off their bicycles and push their bikes up the hill by foot. Drivers can be reckless and pose a danger to cyclists. The roads can also be icy during the winter. City cyclists solve this problem by replacing summer tires with winter tires.

Also, in 2017 the implementation of a new integrated transport scheme of the city began. It provides for a large number of bicycle paths in the Upper City (including on Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street) and in the Lower City.

Must see for ballet or opera fans

This is easily one of my favorite ballet companies in the world, and one of the best opera companies in Russia outside of Moscow. I visited Moscow often back in the good old days just after the fall of the Soviet Union when the exchange rate between dollars and rubles was such that I could go to the Bolshoi every week. No more, as it can be hundreds of dollars a ticket there now. But that did give me a taste for ballet and the experience of viewing 50 or so performances at the Bolshoi taught me both to have very high standards and to know good ballet from bad. Based on that experience the ballet in Nizhny is very, very good - not to be missed! I've seen almost everything in their repertoire and most of the ballets more than once. The Pushkin Opera and Ballet Theater is known as the "Opera Theater" to locals, which is how the bus stop in front of it on Belinsky Street is known. It's easy to get to from anywhere in the upper or old city. You can walk there in fifteen minutes from Minin Square in front of Nizhny's kremlin, for example. The building itself started life as a civic center over a hundred years ago with about half the funds contributed by Nizhny's famous writer Gorky. In the 30's it was converted into a theater but the origin as a large social hall remains in that the main floor of the hall is more flat than is typical for performance venues. It therefore is a good idea to get a seat in the first ten rows or so for the best view of the stage. Performances start at 6 PM, not at 7 PM as is the case in Moscow. The early start allows visitors coming by bus to make it home after the longer opera performances. Buy tickets by visiting the box office from 9 to 5 any day, including weekends. You can check their website at http://www.operann.ru/ for upcoming performances about a month in advance. Tickets for the next month are released around the tenth of the prior month. For the best seats in popular performances, such as the Nutcracker around Christmas, buy a couple of weeks in advance. However, for almost all performances you can get reasonably good seats just a few days in advance and often on the day of the show if you don't mind sitting a bit further away. I always buy front row center seats and those go for around 350 rubles, about $12 at current exchange rates. This is an absolute bargain. By the way, "Row 1" is the second row of seats. The very first row is the "Null" or "zero" row and is reserved for disbursement by the theater's administration. It is where dancers or their families or other invited guests sit. The general rule is that no matter where your seat is, if there are unoccupied better seats further up you can move to them when it is clear they will not be occupied. For example, if you have a seat way back in the 20th row or so and there are many empty seats in the third or fourth rows when the lights go down and the music starts up for the performance, move up. If their occupants arrive late you can always shift a few seats to a nearby empty seat. The theater itself is very beat up and in need of renovation, with much cracked plaster that should be repaired or painted over and a woefully threadbare curtain. However, the talent is superb with an incredibly broad and deep pool of talent both in the ballet and the opera troupes. For example, in a big ballet like the Nutcracker the Russian productions use Vainonen's choreography that requires a *lot* of male-female pairs in secondary, but very important and semi-soloist, roles in addition to the corps de ballet. The Nizhny troupe has the depth and breadth of talent to put that on. To take another example, the Waltz of the Flowers in Western ballet is often staged with all female dancers, I suppose for lack of enough male dancers to put on the waltz as it should be done with a dozen or so couples. Nizhny has enough very strong male dancers to put this on with over a dozen couples, plus in addition have couples for the various "dances" that are in the second act, plus in addition have the lead roles. In December 2012 I saw the Nutcracker in San Francisco (very disappointing - beautiful theater and sets and very small and limited cast), in San Diego (much better, but still a limited cast) and Nizhny and Nizhny was by far the best if dancing is what you want in ballet. The current prima ballerina is Yulia Anufrieva, with very strong contenders for prima in the persons of Elena Baksheyeva and Yana Dubrovina. Very strong up and coming ballerinas include Tatiana Kainova, Marina Mastika, Alexandra Solovyova and many others. The male contingent is very strong as well with Vasily Kozlov and Alexander Lisov doing most of the leads but with very strong contenders in the persons of Artyom Maurer, Pavel Smaev, Leonid Sichev and rising stars such as Artyom Zrelov, Mikhail Bolotov and the Malov brothers Maxim and Alexander. Nizhny also has an extremely strong orchestra. The only downside to this is that the orchestra will often tour for a month in the spring, in which case performances at the theater have to make do with recorded music during that time. Otherwise, you can't beat a Tchaikovsky ballet like Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty or the Nutcracker with fantastic live music from an orchestra that really knows its Tchaikovsky. All of the ballet performances are very, very good. In addition to the classic standards, I also recommend local favorites such as "Plamya Strasti i Lyubvi" ("Flames of Passion and Love"), a collection of "scenes," the Nizhny performance of "One Thousand and One Nights" and for those whose taste runs to the modern and stylized, the famous Soviet ballet "Juno and Avos." As regards opera, the opera company is also extremely strong with the ability to put enormous numbers of people on stage, for example, in their new production of Verdi's Aida. They often have guest performers in leading roles as well. For pure fun, they also do musicals, like "My Fair Lady." Don't miss the classic Russian operas, such as Eugene Onegin and The Queen of Spades. Operas, including Italian operas, are translated and sung in Russian. If you speak Russian that's great, because finally you can understand what all the singing dialog is about in a fine Verdi or Puccini or Rossini opera. If you are an English speaker you're in the same boat as you would be listening to the original Italian - incomprehensible, so you may as well print out a cheat sheet to the opera from Wikipedia or whatever to bring with you to the performance so you know what is going on. Russian ballet, by the way, is often somewhat different than staging in the West. Nizhny, for example, does the original story line and choreography for Swan Lake, where Rothbart dies and Odette and the Prince live happily ever after. Most Western productions do the later, more popular, revision where it is the Prince and Odette who perish. Most Western productions of the Nutcracker do the original version where Clara is a child, usually played by a pre-adolescent child, and thus does not dance but more or less just stands around and mimes while the Prince and others dance. Nizhny, like many Russian companies, does the variation created by Gorsky and Vainonen where Clara is a young adolescent, easily played by ballerinas that tend to be young in their prime, and thus does a lot of dancing including the famous pas de deux with the Prince just before the Dance of the Snowflakes in the first act as well as a lot more dancing in the second act. Get to the theater about 5:30 so you'll have time to check your coat and tuck into a drink and perhaps a snack before the performance. The "buffet" has several ladies who dish out small slices of bread with salmon, caviar or ham on top along with chocolates, some simple pastries and plenty of strong drink. Champagne and sodas and such are not refrigerated and there is no ice. Most locals will get some fruit juice and some vodka for gentlemen and cognac for the ladies. The prices you see are for 100 grams of the hard stuff, about two and a half Western shots. Ask for 50 grams if you don't want a full drink to Russian standards. It gets extremely crowded very quickly during an intermission so head downstairs to the buffet quickly if you want a drink or snack. Wheelchair access is limited since one has to go up stairs to get from the ground level entry floor up to the level of the theater. However, I have seen many people attend in wheelchairs and the staff is always solicitous. The way they deal with the stairs is that whichever strong men are standing about in the vicinity will be called upon to carry the wheelchair and occupant up the stairs. Russian men are proud of their strength so there is never any lack of volunteers. By the way, if you want to see a video of some of the dancers Amazon has a series of "Russian State Theatre" rehearsal videos that were filmed in the rehearsal studios at the Pushkin theater in Nizhny in which Yulia Anufrieva and Vasily Kozlov appear. These are interesting "back stage" views at the intense preparation that goes into a performance.
