Catamarans are categorised as multihull sailing boats: they are composed of two parallel hulls linked together by a rigid body. Multihulls are thinner than monohulls, which means catamarans can reach higher speeds due to reduced water resistance. They also have greater stability and more deck space as a result. Travelling at greater speeds doesn't necessarily mean greater thrills. Due to their stability, catamarans produce fewer sensations compared to monohulls. Like all sailing boats, catamarans are wind-propelled and equipped with daggerboards or fins positioned on the hulls to prevent drifting.

Historically, the first catamarans emerged in Polynesia 4000 years ago, where the local population used outrigger canoes as rafts. The first western catamaran emerged as late as 1662 and was designed by William Petty, an English philosopher and economist.

Before buying a catamaran, it is important to consider the various features of this type of boat. First of all, despite having very low heel, catamarans pitch back and forth more easily, especially in bad weather. In addition, they are often more expensive to maintain. Their length and deck equipment as well as two engines should be taken into account. Finally, given their large size, these types of multihull boats have more difficulty entering harbours, which sometimes means they have to be moored outside the harbour to a mooring buoy and reached by dinghy, row boat, semi-rigid boat, or inflatable boat.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a catamaran?

Catamarans offer a wealth of advantages for any sailor tempted by sailing:

• they are resistant to listing, making sailing more enjoyable;
• they are faster downwind;
• they have two engines providing greater manoeuvrability and making entering harbours easier;
• and they have a low draught, which means they can sail in shallow waters.

However, for those who prefer thrills, it is wiser to go for a monohull, as catamarans are generally heavier which makes them more stable and less sporty.

Layout of a catamaran

The space aboard catamarans with a length of 12 metres and above is larger and more comfortable than monohulls of the same size. This provides more living space with a beautiful galley, large lounge area and a roomy cockpit. This feature is sure to be appreciated when sailing with several people, whether friends or family. In addition, the number of cabins increases to 4 with one at each end of the hulls, combining privacy and tranquillity.

Alexis grew up racing dinghies in the waters of Brittany, France. He immigrated to the United States as a young man and developed his interest in offshore cruising and racing in New England and the Bahamas. Alexis began his professional yachting career as a charter captain sailing the storied seas of French Polynesia on a Fountaine-Pajot Marquises 56 catamaran. There he developed a talent for sharing and communicating his love for bluewater sailing to his worldly guests. More recently, Alexis spent ten years managing Nautor’s Swan Charters, a high-end charter company with over fifty Swans based in the Caribbean, New England and the Mediterranean. While at Nautor’s Swan, Alexis coordinated sales of new yachts through the French defiscalisation program. He later instituted a successful yacht sales and management program to develop the fleet in non-French territories. This experience gave him substantial experience in the many facets of yacht sales and brokerage in the United States, Europe and the Caribbean. Alexis is bilingual English-French. He was educated in the United States and has worked in the US, Europe and the Caribbean. He has sailed extensively on multihulls and particularly enjoys performance cats.

Bernard discovered his passion for catamarans at the age of 16, sailing in Brittany and spent several years honing his skills at sailing schools. At 18, he purchased his own Hobie Cat 16 and raced along the French and Italian coastlines. From 1986 to 1990, he served as a permanent crew member on several racing catamarans, including JET SERVICE and ORANGE. He also raced on Formula 40’ and set records aboard CHARLEMAGNE. In 1992, he had the opportunity to join the largest cruising catamaran project at the time, working on HIGHEST HONOUR 1 & 2, which were built in the South of France. He served as a technical reference for seven months and completed four Atlantic crossings on board, as well as a refit back in France. His technical expertise was highly valued throughout this period. With his professional French captain’s license in hand, he has since sailed on large monohull and multihull boats in the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, the East Coast of the United States, and French Polynesia.

Jean was born in 1985 in Toulouse where he grew up on the family farm with four sisters. From the age of 22 to 30, he worked 7 months a year as offshore cruising instructor for a sailing school in Brittany, while the rest of the year he was a freelance captain doing deliveries and charters between Europe, the Caribbean, USA, Tahiti and New Zealand. He then went full time as a freelance captain, mostly delivering for charter companies and boat manufacturers before slowly transitioning on providing personalized boating instruction and experience to new boat owners. After 40+ deliveries, including 11 Atlantic and Pacific crossings, and 18 years working in the industry, Jean has been all over the world and intensely sailed Europe, Baltic Sea, Mediterranean, and the Caribbean, on monohull and catamarans ranging from 30 to 82 feet, across 10+ yacht builders. Jean is now using this knowledge and expertise to help owners on their coastal and offshore projects, from finding the right boat until they reach full autonomy.

I bought a yacht that I had never seen. I did this because I trusted my broker Andrew Holland. It was not an easy job for Andrew, as I am an experienced boat builder and owner of previous yachts, but work in West Africa. Imagine how hard it was to communicate what I was looking for. Andrew came up with exactly what I wanted. He dealt with time delays, all my questions at odd hours, and was there for the survey. He reported honestly and professionally. After buying the yacht, I arrived at the boat on a Sunday night, after dark, after travelling from West Africa to the Caribbean, and found it was better than expected. He never pulled punches and made me aware of shortfalls. I expected to spend my one month leave working on the boat, but actually spent less than one week, and was able to spend 3 weeks sailing – wonderful bonus.
