E1 electric powerboat racing league to bring race to Miami in November 2025

As awareness of the implications of climate change grows, the race towards a zero-emission world has become an adopted goal of people across the globe. Chatter about harmful emissions often focuses on cars, and how to make them run on more sustainable sources of energy. However, boats are also a large contributor to global warming, releasing harmful gases like carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide.

The E1 series, a powerboat racing league, is hoping to bring recognition to this issue. Set in alluring locations across the world like Hong Kong, Venice and Monaco, E1 teams race in electric powerboats to bring awareness and promote the advent of sustainable energy boats.

“We feel that ultimately, like the car manufacturers ten years ago, the boat manufacturers will have to go electric given what’s going on with the oceans,” said Robert Jakobi, a food entrepreneur and owner of the E1’s Team Miami. “Having a fully electric sustainable boat series to showcase boat mobility is very powerful.”

In its first season, the league has already attracted attention across social media. The first race, which took place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, had 90 million views across platforms like Instagram, Facebook and X.

Jakobi attributes part of the leagues social media success to the celebrities that own the teams, including Tom Brady, Will Smith and Rafael Nadal among others.

“The celebrities involved have a very big audience,” Jakobi said. “Whether that be Virat Kohli, the biggest star in Indian cricket, Marc Anthony, Tom Brady or Rafel Nadal. That has resonated with our fans and audience.”

“The celebrity backed owners combined with the mission and vision of E1 has created something very powerful.”

The E1 boat series was founded by Alejandro Agag, who also founded a racing league, formula E, which is a motorsport league that competes with electric cars.

“He realized back then that all the car manufacturers would go electric,” Jakobi said. “There needed to be a motor racing series to showcase electric mobility.”

Jakobi believed in Agag’s vision of the league, but also thinks E1 has more potential than formula E.

“I thought E1 had more potential than formula E because of the celebrity component,” Jakobi said. “That for me is a way to grow the sport. On top of that we have a plan down the road to have a docu-series like Formula 1’s Drive to Survive.”

In December 2023, Jakobi, along with Latin-American salsa artist Marc Anthony, launched Team Miami, which will compete in the E1 series league for seasons to come.

“We wanted to build the team around the city of Miami,” Jakobi said. “A lot of the other teams are named after the actual celebrity. We realized that the Miami brand is far more powerful than any celebrity. With the growth of Miami, we wanted to build a team in Miami to rival the other teams like Inter Miami and the Dolphins.”

“We have a long way to go, but we believe there’s so much potential here that we can become a household name in Miami sports.”

Another aspect that makes E1 unique is that it is a mixed gender racing league, with one female and one male mandated for each team.

“That really fosters inclusivity in motorsport, which you don’t have for example in Formula 1,” Jakobi said. “That was a compelling reason to get involved.”

The pilots for Team Miami are Erik Stark from Sweden, a six-time powerboat world champion and Anna Glennon, an eight-time U.S national jet ski champion.

“Erik is one of those guys who’s straight-faced and gets the job done. On the other hand, Anna is someone who’s all over social media,” Jakobi said. “But with the two of them combined, we got for sure the most powerful lineup on the grid and they complement each other very well.”

The evidence is clear, as Team Miami is currently the leader of this season’s E1 series through three races. The team has also gained momentum off the course, partnering with Azimut Yachts, a company looking to manufacture sustainable energy yachts. The next race in the series will occur in Monaco on Sunday.

While Miami residents won’t be able to see one of their newest sports teams compete in season one, they will be able to attend in-person during season two.

After negotiations with the E1 league, Team Miami was able to get the league to sign a three-year deal to sponsor a race in Miami, which will start in November 2025.

The race in Miami will be the first event in the United States and will serve as the season-finale race for the league’s second season.

“We want to do a three-day festival [in Miami], similar to Formula 1,” Jakobi said. “There’s obviously going to be the racing, which will occur for two days. But [we want to do] an acceleration music festival. Marc will help run that with all the Latin-American talent he has access to.”

With the introduction of a new motorsport to the city, Miami may have another annual sports tradition on their way soon.

30th St. Clair powerboat races taking over downtown

Portrait of Jackie Smith

ST. CLAIR — The roaring of powerboats will return to the river in St. Clair this weekend — and the festivities that take root around it downtown — for a milestone installment of the St. Clair River Classic.

The offshore race will close down M-29, or Riverside Avenue, from 6 p.m. Wednesday when the Racing Village will be set up nearby the water through noon next Monday, according to the St. Clair County Road Commission.

Then, on Thursday, boat teams from all over the country will begin to arrive ahead of the accompanying weekend events and the races on Sunday.

But Bob Currier, race director for the Blue Water Offshore Racing Association, said this weekend marks the 30th year for the classic, and that to help make it stand out, they’re hosting a boat parade and street party Friday night.

“Being a St. Clair guy, born and raised in St. Clair, involved in the community for a number of years, this is probably one of the largest community events of the summer,” he said. “The fireworks on the Fourth of July draw a huge crowd to St. Clair, and that’s always a good time, but this spans over four days, and the race teams absolutely love coming to St. Clair for a couple of reasons.”

“First and foremost, our race venue is relatively compact. They’re able to, for the most part, walk from their spot in Race Village on Riverside to the staging area or the wet pits, which is on the Pine River and Rotary Park right on Clinton Avenue, and the crane area is walkable as well,” Currier said. “They love the interaction that they have with the race fans in St. Clair and the St. Clair area. A lot of the teams say it’s like their second vacation. Even though they’re working hard to race, they enjoy coming to St. Clair because of the community welcome. … A lot of the other race sites, it’s a four- or five-mile drive from where they get and display the boats to the area where the crane is to put them in the water.”

What does the powerboat race entail?

Held in conjunction with the Offshore Powerboat Association, St. Clair’s event is the third stop and one of six this season on the OPA racing schedule.

Participants compete in 10 classes, or sizes of race boats, depending on how long their boat is, as well as what kind of engine and horsepower it has, with individual teams competing for points for a national championship that’ll be awarded in November.

Currier said between 36 and 40 teams are coming to St. Clair this season, citing it as an average boat count over the last several years.

Teams are expected to come in from as far away as Florida, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Missouri, and other parts of Michigan.

Local competitor Knucklehead Racing returns this year with owner Ed Smith, who also owns Rivers Bend Marina in St. Clair. “We think Ed may have been or may be one of the only racers this year that has competed every year in the event in St. Clair,” Currier said.

Magna Electrical Vehicle Structures, in its third year, also returns as the title or presenting sponsor for the classic among 30 sponsors overall.

How can people celebrate downtown?

With race boats arriving all day Thursday, several areas will also be set up to accommodate them with the crane and ramp areas off Fred Moore Highway and the St. Clair city boat harbor, respectively, and the wet and dry pits at Rotary Park and on Riverside.

Live entertainment will be provided on Riverview Plaza in St. Clair each evening on Thursday through Sunday.

The boat parade and street party is set for 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday.

For the parade, Currier said the boats will leave Race Village on Riverside heading north to Brown Street before heading west to Ninth Street, south to Clinton Avenue, and west back toward downtown.

The street party will be held on Clinton from Fred Moore to Riverside.

“Where a number of race boats will be on display,” Currier said. “On the street, teams will be available to sign autographs, meet and greet fans, folks can get up close and personal and get photographs, all that kind of stuff. And that’s kind of taking the street party, if you will, from Race Village to Clinton Avenue. So, Murphy’s (Inn), the Riverside Pub, Pepper Joe’s, and the Voyager all have a part in the festivities. Give them an opportunity to welcome the race fans to their establishments because the city has an open footprint for adult beverages.”

Though not in a state-sanctioned social district, the city of St. Clair has an ordinance that sets an area that allows possession and consumption of adult beverages in a couple of public parks and rights of way.

Also, as part of the street party, Currier said, there will be a face-painter for kids and a balloon guy making characters.

There will be an opening ceremony for the offshore boat races on Sunday, tentatively set for 11:15 a.m., with races set for noon to 5 p.m. There will be an award ceremony at Riverview Plaza at 7 p.m.

Boat explodes, two rescued on Lake Michigan off Chicago's north suburbs

By Todd Feurer , Marybel Gonzalez

Updated on: July 24, 2024 / 9:01 AM CDT / CBS Chicago

WAUKEGAN, Ill. (CBS) -- Two people were rescued after an apparent boat explosion Tuesday afternoon on Lake Michigan near Waukegan.

The U.S. Coast Guard said that around 2:45 p.m., they received a report of a "personal watercraft explosion" about two miles northeast of the Waukegan Harbor.

The call for help came in shortly before 3 p.m. A 25-foot fiberglass hull powerboat on Lake Michigan approximately two miles northeast of the Waukegan Harbor had just exploded.

The boat was seen engulfed in flames and smoke near the power plant at the end of Greenwood Avenue, according to the Waukegan Fire Department.

Two boaters onboard—a 46-year-old from Washington; and a 55-year-old from west suburban Franklin Park—were rescued and brought to shore by a Good Samaritan. But both were seriously injured.

Both men, officials said, suffered burns and smoke inhalation. They were taken in serious condition to Vista East Medical Center in Waukegan.

"I've been out on this lake since I was 7 years old. I've had my own boat since I was 17," said boater Jim Schiffman, "and we don't see boats explode."

Schiffman was nearby when the boat exploded, and he immediately noticed the smoke from several miles away.

"Lots of flames. Smoke was billowing," he said. "Out of curiosity, we want to go see what was going on—and they had unloaded two passengers off a pontoon boat that had been thrown or blown into the water by a boat that exploded."

The rescue was nothing short of a miracle, Schiffman said. Due to the bad weather, there were hardly any boats out on the water.

Another boater captured the moments the flames slowly went out, before what was left of the boat quickly sank into the lake.

Investigators said the boat was a total loss. The only part that could be salvaged from it was a cushion that was pulled out of the water by boaters in the area.

"New boaters, old boaters—number one, if you're going to boat on this lake, you have to respect the lake," said Schiffman. "This lake is so dangerous."

The cause of the explosion remained under investigation by Illinois Conservation Police late Wednesday.

Meanwhile, as the summer continues, boaters are urging safety.

"Know the lake, understand it, check your weather, check your boating forecast—and make sure somebody knows you're out there," Schiffman said.

The U.S. Coast Guard said there was no evidence of any pollution from the burning boat, but that salvage crews and pollution responders were monitoring the situation.

The cause of the explosion remained unknown late Tuesday.

Two fishermen had to leap from their boat Tuesday afternoon when a whale breached and fell on top of the vessel, flipping it onto its side.

A video posted to Instagram shows a whale breaching next to the power boat and landing on its stern, causing it to flip near Odiorne State Park in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The video was captured from a nearby boat.

Two brothers from Maine, Colin, 16,  and Wyatt Yager, 19, shot the video on Tuesday and then rescued the fishermen who fell from the overturned boat.

The Yagers were out fishing when they first noticed the whale, which appeared to be interested in the striped bass they were fishing for. They did their best to stay a safe distance from the whale, they said.

Colin took out his phone and started filming, hoping to catch the whale breaching. But they were shocked when it emerged right next to a nearby boat and fell across its stern. The two fishermen leapt from the boat as the whale struck it.

“Neither of us had ever seen anything like that before,” said Colin. “We were just completely in shock for a second or two.” Advertisement

Wyatt drove the boat over and helped the two fishermen out of the water. Just one was wearing a life jacket, but they both appeared to be uninjured.

“One of them had a life jacket and the other didn’t; he said he was holding on to the other guy’s life jacket. They said they were happy to have that one because it could have gone south otherwise,” said Wyatt.

“They seemed to be in good spirits and were OK,” said Colin.

The Yagers dropped the fisherman off and spoke with the Coast Guard, which arrived shortly after they’d pulled the fishermen out of the water. After they went home they saw videos of the Coast Guard retrieving the overturned boat from the water.

“It was a nice day, the water was calm, nobody would have expected to flip over today,” said Wyatt. He said it was a good reminder to always wear a life jacket and be safe in the water.

The whale appeared to be uninjured and the capsized boat has been salvaged, the Coast Guard wrote in a statemen t on X, formerly known as Twitter.
