- SWAN 411 ILL WIND
ILL WIND is a very well maintained Swan 411. She is hull #32 of 42 built between 1977 and 1979. In about 2014 ILL WIND was sailed to Florida where she has been only lightly day sailed.
ILL WIND features newly painted non-skid fiberglass decks and freshly painted hull. She has an updated chart plotter and new upholstery throughout. With an impressive sail inventory, sea kindly design and typically over built like all Swans, ILL WIND is an excellent daysailor or she will happily cross oceans.
The present owner has enjoyed sailing her for the past 20 years. Now it is time for someone else to create their own memories. ILL WIND is ready to go. Offers are encouraged!

The Overview
Nautor’s Swan 411
This is an extremely well maintained 411. The previous custodian had taken great care of her during ownership since 1996. The current custodian has again spared no expense over maintaining her and on her purchase soon undertook a number of upgrades.
Under the previous owners ownership she was extensively cruised in fair weather and foul. They explored the South Coast, channel harbours, the Bay of Biscay and many Portuguese ports. In 2019 they cruised from Inverness, via the Caledonian canal, on to Belfast and Dublin, then to Fowey in Cornwall and finally to Portland marina. She never let them down and has been maintained in part to sustain a remarkable Sparkman & Stephens Swan. The current owner has kept her in Royal Clarence Marina and she has been enjoyed on frequent trips along the South Coast, west country and Channel Islands for the last two summers.
Since ownership in May 2021 the current custodian had undertaken the following;
- Replaced all seacocks with Blakes seacocks
- Installed shore power
- Replaced the Hot water tank
- Replaced the fridge
- Replaced the sea toilet
- Replaced genoa sheet winches and main halyard winch with ST
- Installed Lewmar electric windlass and 60m of anchor chain
- Replaced the cabin windows
- New mainsail cover, wheel cover and pram hood cover with grey canvas
- New guard rail wires fitted
- Replaced batteries
- Installed Victron battery charger
- Cabin heater serviced
- Renewed all red stripes
- New life raft
- New outboard engine
- New 3D tender
- Diesel tank flushed and cleaned (2023)
- Coppercoating completed (2023)
- The engine has been professionally serviced each year.

Swan 411 – Video review
- Dick Durham
- October 10, 2013
YM reader John Bailey invites Dick Durham for an overnight cruise aboard a classic from the 1970s
Product Overview
Manufacturer:, price as reviewed:.
What’s she like to sail? For her size, the Swan 411 is a marvel of manoeuvrability. She points higher than most boats yet runs off downwind quickly – although you’ll want to set a kite to enjoy her at her best. Her masthead rig was originally sloop, but John has set up a permanent babystay to make her a cutter. Her keel-stepped mast is so strong that you only need to fuss about with running backstays when going to windward in heavy weather. John has replaced the original wire runners with Dyneema. The main and headsail halyards are operated at the mast, but you could have them led back to the cockpit, which would boost both safety and friction. Her mainsheet is led to a winch in front of the bridge deck, which is where the traveller is mounted. This arrangement keeps the sheet clear of the crew during gybes, but a singlehanded helmsman has to leave the wheel and walk forward to trim the mainsail – and John’s retrofitted 48-inch wheel gets in the way. On passage, the crew must clip on their harnesses before exiting the main hatch because they are high up and exposed when crossing the bridgedeck en route to the cockpit. What’s she like in port and at anchor? Down below, her teak panelling, holly and teak cabin sole and teak bulkheads, shelving and cupboards give a warm, inviting and traditional feel. But she is darker than a modern yacht. When she was launched, boatbuilders thought ‘windows’ were for houses, not yachts. But then again, many modern hulls are bulbous and misshapen in order to accommodate a master bedroom aft. Not so this Swan – the shape of the hull comes first and is not allowed to be compromised by internal comfort. That said, the accommodation is reassuring: the upright surfaces are not at great lurch-distance from each other in a seaway. There are a good many handholds throughout and you could live aboard in comfort. Her deep bilge allows for generous standing headroom without the need for skyscraper topsides, and her low freeboard is a boon when you’re moored up alongside a pontoon – just an easy step up through the rail gate without the need of a clumsy Speaker’s Corner box on the dock. And like all Swans, she has a sump so that the bilges can be washed through and drained when she’s laid up. Would she suit you and your crew? Her draught rules her out as a creek crawler, but for pure sailing pleasure, peerless sea-keeping and sheer beauty, very few other boats can hold a candle to this all-time classic. She’s a fine, fast passage-maker that revels in a good blow and offers her crew a comfortable motion at sea, yet she has the manoeuvrability that most comparable yachts lack, performs well in light airs too, and can sail closer to the wind than most modern cruisers. The genoa is a beast but the staysail is manageable and you’ll rarely need to use the runners, so short-tacking won’t be a chore. The accommodation, though tratitional, is more than adequate for a modern crew of six to live aboard in harbour, or to cross an ocean in comfort. You may want for ventilation in steamy tropical anchorages, but otherwise she’s good for Trade Wind sailing, too. The downside of nearly all 1970s Swans, for cruising purposes, is that their deck layout and huge headsails demand a full crew. Certainly, singlehanding Avista keeps John on his toes, but he’s proved that it’s possible for a keen connoisseur to cruise her solo.

Extensive decorative rope work on yacht. Avon Redstart dinghy with 2.5 HP Mariner outboard. 6 leg Jacobs galvanized yacht storage cradle new 2006. Owners comment; “AVISTA” is a modern classic by Sparkman & Stephens and Nautor Swan. I have very extensively overhauled and updated the equipment on “Avista” without compromising the original design since buying her in 1998. Close to £155k has now been spent. S&S Swans are probably the best of all Swans produced to date and certainly “Avista” is the best 411 in the world. Swan 411s are a development of the popular Swan 41 and is a very well proportioned yacht, forty were built. She is a wonderful compromise between the aesthetics of yesterday and the performance of today. Her long overhangs, tumblehome and graceful sheer combined with a hull and rig designed to work in any conditions. The Swan 411 is a very powerful yacht; the hull design combined with the large sail area and ample weight make her very capable in difficult sea conditions and is particularly competent upwind, a hallmark of all S&S designs. Avista is hull no 010 and was the first 411 to have the deeper rudder fitted by Nautor following feedback received from previous 411 yachts. The 65 HP engine makes motor sailing or motoring home a breeze in any conditions. The legendary S&S design combined with the highest Finnish build quality of Nautor Swan make these yachts rugged ocean wanderers, second to none. The tried and tested traditional configuration below deck, make her a very safe and comfortable passage making yacht. “AVISTA” attracts attention and comments from discerning yachtsman wherever she is goes. She requires little or no engineering work and is very extensively equipped. Ownership History Date hull completed 05-09-1977 Date launched 06-02-1978. 1st owner based in Saro, Sweden. 2nd owner was based in Bremen Germany from 05-11-1987. A C T O N E
It’s Prince Siegfried’s 21 st birthday. Young people have gathered to celebrate the occasion including the Prince’s friend Benno, and his old tutor Wolfgang. The festivities are spirited and there is much dancing and games. In the midst of the activity, the Prince’s aunt arrives to remind her nephew that his coming of age is a serious affair – it is time for him to marry. A Ball has been arranged for the following evening and there, from a group of prospective fiancées, he is to choose a bride.
Siegfried is disconsolate at the thought of his carefree youth slipping away. He has no desire to marry. The day draws to a close and in an attempt to cheer his friend, Benno points to a flock of wild swans in flight and suggests a hunting expedition. Deciding that life is still to be enjoyed Siegfried orders pursuit.
A C T T W O
The hunting party follows the swans thought the woods, reaching a clearing where they settle on a nearby lake. Siegfried’s attention is suddenly attracted by a beautiful white swan, which is transformed into a lovely young maiden. She is Odette, Queen of the Swans. The evil sorcerer Von Rothbart holds her under his spell – by day she and her friends are and must remain swans, but between midnight and dawn they may resume their human form. Only the pure love of a young man can remove the curse. Astonished by her beauty and full of love for Odette, Siegfried’s love will destroy evil powers. Von Rothbart suddenly appears in the form of an owl, beckoning menacingly to Odette. As dawn breaks, the lovers bid farewell. Odette returns to the lake, resuming her guise as a swan and Rothbart plots to make the Prince break his vow.
A C T T H R E E
The entire court is assembled for Siegfried’s betrothal Ball, where the invited Princesses and their families eagerly await the decision of the Prince. The Prince’s aunt indicates he is to choose a bride from the maidens present, but none pleases him. The young Prince’s mind is still filled with images of the beautiful Odette. Mindful of his vow of Fidelity, he pays little attention to the eligible young women with whom he is presented. Suddenly, a fanfare announces the arrival of two new guests. It is Von Rothbart disguised as a nobleman with his daughter Odile.
The Prince stands transfixed by her likeness to Odette and overwhelmed by the unexpected appearance of his true love, he asks her to dance. Odile so bewitches the Prince that he asks for her hand in marriage. Convinced he is with his beloved Odette, he declares his fidelity in front of all present. Triumphantly, Von Rothbart and Odile reveal themselves. The Prince realizes too late that he is a victim of their cruel treachery. Odette has been betrayed and now can never be released from her enchantment. In despair, the Prince runs to the lake to search for her.
A C T F O U R
The swan maidens are anxiously awaiting Odette’s return when she runs in and tells them in anguish of Siegfried’s betrayal. The evil magician Rothbart has triumphed and there is no salvation for the swan maidens now. A storm springs up on the lake. The Prince comes running to the lakeside and begs Odette to forgive him, but Odette is destined to die. The Prince fights and overcomes Von Rothbart, and at last the swan maidens are freed from the evil spell, and the souls of Siegfried and Odette are united in eternal happiness.
Moscow City Ballet Presents Swan Lake Review
Being only my second ever Ballet and following on the foot steps of the enchanting and very emotional Manon, Swan Lake had an awful lot to live up too. That’s an odd thing to say about a world famous Ballet.
During my last ballet encounter I found myself falling head over heels in love with the ballet. With its ability to command such emotions through expertly choreographed dance, and an orchestra that could have you holding your breath with the drama of the score.
If you want to see me create my projects, follow me on Tik Tok and Instagram.
Love at first sight is tricky kind of love, will it live up to its expectations the second time around. Would I still feel so enchanted by the beauty the ballet?
The Moscow City Ballets presentation of Swan Lake was spellbinding and the perfect Ballet to confirm that indeed Ballet is an art I aim to enjoy at every possible opportunity. And that it is never to later to discover love for a new art.
Swan Lake starts out at Prince Siegfried’s 21st birthday (Daniil Orlov) where he is told that coming of age is a serious affair and he must find a wife. A Ball has been arranged for the very next evening and there, where a group of beautiful and carefully selected young ladies are invited as prospective fiancées, he must choose a bride.
Siegfried has no desire to marry, wanting to maintain his youth and freedom. His good friend Benno (Dzmitry Lazovik) in his endeavour to cheer him up points to a flock of wild swans in flight and suggests a hunting expedition.
During the hunt Siegfried is drawn to a captivating white swan who transforms into the most beautiful young woman. She is Odette, Queen of the Swans (Liliya Orekhova). The evil sorcerer Von Rothbart (Talgat Kozhabaev) had put her under a spell, where by day she and her friends must remain swans, but between midnight and dawn they return to their human form.
The spell dictates that only the pure love of a young man can remove the curse. Captivated by her beauty Siegfried instantly falls in love with Odette and feels confident his love will destroy the spell. However dawn arrives and Odette must return to the lake and return to her swan form. The lovers bid farewell with the hope that the spell with be broken. However Rothbart plots to make the Prince break his vow.
As soon as the Orchestra started to play Swan Lake had drawn me in. The enchanting score that was first penned by Tchaikovsky in 1871 and the Ballet first performed in 1877 draws you in to a world of breathtaking music telling the tale of heartbreak and despair, yet is portrayed in the most beautiful way.
It’s mind-blowing to think audiences were enjoying this very same ballet 142 years ago. That the beauty of the music and dance has stood the test of time, to allow us to be enchanted by the very same score all these years later.
The choreography and timing was perfect, when you are faced with in excess of 20 swans in costumes that are every little ballet loving girls dreams, and quite frankly some adults too! It’s apparent there is not an inch of room for error. Yet every step and graceful hand movement was perfectly delivered in a way that had you holding your breath in disbelief.
Swan Lake is the epitome of grace, elegance and perfection that’s draws you in and has you feeling as if you are the only person in the audience. The music has a mesmerising calming effect on your soul, which enables you to forget everything in the world apart from what is going on right there on that stage. I honestly never believed anything had the ability to demand my concentration to such a level. And I left the theatre despite the sad overtone of the story feeling calm and uplifted having experienced such beauty on every level.
The Moscow City Ballet is touring throughout January click here for the dates and if you are lucky enough to catch it, prepare to be utterly captivated.
Disclaimer, I was gifted the tickets for Swan Lake for review purposes, however all opinions are my own and I had no idea the profound effect this truly stunning work of art would have on me.
