What makes sailing in Boston so special? Boston is a city of great diversity, both in terms of culture and landscape. Although Boston is known for its colonial architecture, narrow old streets and cobble stones that take the traveler back straight to 18th century England, the city really opens up from the water. Boat rentals in Boston will deliver a completely new experience and Sailo guarantees to provide it.
Boston Harbor sailing tours are one of the most interesting and fascinating in the United States. You will discover the sights from a boat and learn about Boston's shores’ history, which is not found anywhere else in the world.
Boston Harbor Islands by boat
When you get tired of the urban landscape, you can choose one of our luxury boat charters and sailing cruises in Boston which will help you explore the true beauty of nature. Boston Harbor Islands are really diverse. This national and state park is a true oasis just a few minutes from Boston’s shore. This place will make you feel like a part of nature. Fall in awe with breathtaking views, hike dozens of trails, get a feel for local wildlife, or take one of Sailo’s fishing boat rentals from Boston and catch some fish. It’s definitely the place to escape from Boston’s streets and deep into nature’s beauty.

Museum on the water
Here, at Griffin’s Wharf in Boston, on December 16, 1773, when three tea ships, Beaver, the Eleanor, and the Dartmouth arrived in Boston Harbor, the colonists insisted that the tea must be sent back to England. After the Massachusetts Governor refused, the underground resistance group leader Samuel Adams organized the “tea party”. The British tea that was worth $18,000 was thrown into the Boston Harbor. This set off the chain of events leading to the revolution and the proclamation of the US Independence in 1776.
Sailing to Georges Island
You must not miss the opportunity to visit the famous Georges Island. The gorgeous arches of historic Fort Warren will meet you once you arrive to see the island. Construction of the fort began in 1833 and completed in 1861 shortly after the American Civil War had broken out, during which it was used as a prison for Confederate soldiers, it’s also home to the legend of the Lady in Black. Now it’s a peaceful, beautiful attraction where you can have a tour or just enjoy a picnic in nature.
Boston partying cruises
Whether you organize a corporate event or celebrate an anniversary with the family, Sailo’s more than happy to provide you with a party boat in Boston . We also have the best sailing cruises for big groups in Boston, which can hold up to a thousand people. If you want to unwind with a small group of friends or family, rent one of Sailo’s luxury yacht charters, so you can leave behind the noise and stress of the big city , and get surrounded by soothing water, blue sky and loving people on a Sailo boat rental in Boston.
Sailing at Sunset in Boston
What could be more romantic and astonishing than watching nightfall right above a shimmering metropolis? Experience the beauty of the city’s skyline along Boston Harbor at sunset on one of Sailo’s luxury yacht rentals in Boston. It is unforgettable to enjoy the changing colours of the sky, to see their reflection in the water and to find yourself in the bliss of the moment.

USS Truxtun Pulls into Boston for Port Visit
From lt.cmdr. david carter.
BOSTON, Ma - The Arleigh-Burke class guided missile destroyer, USS Truxtun (DDG 103), arrived in Boston for a scheduled port visit, Thursday, Mar. 14.
The visit coincides with the city’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration and provides an opportunity to showcase the Navy’s capabilities and talent of its Sailors, with a goal of increasing awareness and understanding within the local community. “We’re excited to show our Nation’s flag and tell the Navy story,” said Cmdr. Chance Smith, Truxtun’s commanding officer. “Our Navy is doing extremely important work all around the world every day, so it’s an honor for Truxtun to be here, share that story and serve as ambassadors on behalf of our service.” A city already steeped in Navy heritage, Boston is home to the world’s oldest commissioned warship afloat, USS Constitution, which sits just across town from where Truxtun is moored. With both vessels in town over the weekend, visitors will have the unique opportunity to see warships reflective of both the Navy’s origins at “Old Ironsides,” or a more modern approach onboard a destroyer. The history in Boston this week isn’t limited to just ships either, as Truxtun has ten Sailors on board with ties to the Greater Boston area or surrounding parts of the Northeast. “I’m very excited to be back home and bring the Navy with me,” said Lt. Meghan Brooks, operations officer on Truxtun and Pepperell, Mass. native. “There are so many amazing things this city has to offer and I’m excited for our crew to experience it, and similarly, I’m excited for Boston to interact with the talented men and women making up our force.” The ship’s crew are scheduled to participate in a number of engagements around the city, ranging form community service projects to veteran events, and will wrap up the visit by taking part in South Boston’s St. Patrick’s Day / Evacuation Day parade. Truxtun was commissioned in 2009 and is named after Commodore Thomas Truxtun, who was one of the first six commanders appointed by George Washington to the newly-formed U.S. Navy. She currently serves as part of Commander, Naval Surface Force Atlantic (SURFLANT). SURFLANT mans, trains and equips assigned surface forces and shore activities, ensuring the capable force for conducting prompt and sustained operations in support of the United States national interests. More than 70 ships and 34 shore commands make up the SURFLANT force.

Comet 12P/Pons Brooks (12P), also known as the devil comet, is a 10.5-mile-wide (17 kilometers) comet that circles the sun on a highly elliptical orbit every 71 years or so. 12P is a cryovolcanic, or ice volcano, comet. This means that it occasionally erupts when solar radiation cracks open its icy shell, or nucleus, allowing it to shoot out a combination of ice and gas, known as cryomagma, into space. When this happens, the cryomagma massively expands 12P's coma — the cloud of gas and dust surrounding the nucleus — making the comet appear much brighter for the next few days.
In July 2023, astronomers watched 12P blow its top for the first time in almost 70 years , and it has erupted reasonably frequently ever since. During the comet's early eruptions, 12P's expanded coma grew lopsided thanks to a notch in its nucleus, making it look like it had grown a pair of demonic horns . However, following more-recent eruptions, the horns seem to have disappeared for good . Newer photos of the comet also show that it has developed a green glow, which is caused by high levels of dicarbon (two carbon atoms stuck together) in its coma and tail, which is quite rare.
12P is expected to make its closest approach to Earth on June 2 after first slingshotting around the sun in late April. After it passes us, it will then journey back into the outer reaches of our cosmic neighborhood, where it will spend a majority of the next 70 years.
As it continues to hurtle toward the inner solar system , 12P can now be spotted in the same part of the night sky as the Andromeda galaxy — a spiral galaxy located around 2.5 million light-years from the Milky Way , which is destined to collide with our own galaxy in around 4.5 billion years .
You can watch this extremely rare conjunction (an astronomical phenomenon that occurs when two objects appear close in the sky, despite being trillions of miles apart) take place in real time thanks to livestreams from the Virtual Telescope Project , which will showcase the cosmic spectacle as seen from the project's observatory in Manciano, Italy from 2:30 p.m. ET on Sunday (March 10) and Tuesday (March 12).

For now, the wide conjunction is most clearly visible just above the horizon after sunset, according to Spaceweather.com . Andromeda is visible to the naked eye with clear skies but you will need a good telescope , camera or decent pair of stargazing binoculars to spot 12P, which is around 10 degrees below the galaxy. (That's approximately the same width as your fist when held up to the sky, according to Time and Date .)
The Virtual Telescope Project has already captured a stunning long-exposure shot of 12P and Andromeda shining side-by-side (see above).
Astrophotographer Petr Horálek , has also captured a series of stunning images of the pair from Slovakia. The Triangulum galaxy (M33) and the star Mirach, often used as a "guide" to find Andromeda, are also clearly visible in these photos.

This is not the first time that 12P has photobombed a cosmic structure: In January, the comet passed in front of the Crescent Nebula — a massive cloud of ionized red gas located 5,000 light-years from Earth.
Astrophotographers are also hoping to snap the comet during the upcoming total solar eclipse on April 8 , when 12P will be orientated very close to the temporarily obstructed sun. If it erupts in the days leading up to the eclipse, the comet may also be visible to the naked eye during totality .

Local News | Hot Property: Luxury new custom home the Marion kind
hot property - 5 Deer Run, Marion,MA-02738
Admittedly, we didn’t know much about Marion but one look around its adorable village center, stately homes, and the waters lapping at Sippican Harbor and we’re big fans. Tucked into Plymouth County, you can still see a show in Boston or boat to Martha’s Vineyard before retreating to your idyllic in-between spot at 5 Deer Run.
Built in 2024, the gleaming custom home’s exterior is a marriage of traditional lines and contemporary design. The property sits at the end of a long driveway on a whopping 8.4 acres abutting a thicket of trees, in a private enclave of just a few similarly high-end homes. Enter through the dramatic double front door — or the door to the neatly organized mudroom — or park in the giant three-car garage and settle in.
In a home with three floors and more than 6,200 square feet, you’re bound to find more than a few highlights, but one of the standouts is the kitchen and living space that open to the home’s expansive patio. Paneled, professional-grade appliances, an oversized eat-in island, and a view that extends to the living room’s sleek fireplace feature prioritizes eating and gathering as a family, plus plenty of room to invite a gaggle of friends.
Five bedrooms, all on the second floor, each have their own en-suite bath, but naturally, it’s the primary suite that shines with a custom walk-in closet, a spa bath with a freestanding soaking tub, and a sweet balcony overlooking the treeline.
In the morning, take the elevator down to the home’s lower-level gym for your workout, which is where you’ll also find a roomy den, movie theater, and storage space.
The town center’s eateries, Beverly Yacht Club, and golfing at the Kittansett Club are all just minutes away.
The sale of the home, on the market for $3,000,000, is represented by Jane Migdol and Nancy Moore with the Migdol Moore Team at Gibson Sotheby’s International Realty.

Climate change and boat strikes are killing right whales. Stricter speed limits could help them

Amid a difficult year for North Atlantic right whales, a proposed rule to help protect them is one step closer to reality.
Earlier this month, a proposal to expand speed limits for boats — one of the leading causes of death for the endangered whales — took a key step forward: It’s now under review by the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, the last stage of federal review.
Fewer than 360 of the whales remain; only about 70 of them are females of reproductive age. Every individual whale is considered vital to the species’ survival, but since 2017 right whales have been experiencing what scientists call an “unusual mortality event,” during which 39 whales have died.
Human actions — including climate change — are killing them.
When the cause of a right whale’s death can be determined, it is most often a strike by a boat or entanglement in fishing gear. Three young whales have been found dead this year, two of them with wounds from boat strikes and the third entangled in gear. One of the whales killed by a boat was a calf just a few months old.
Climate change, meanwhile, has disrupted their food supply , driving down right whale birth rates and pushing them into territories without rules in place to protect them.
“Our impacts are so great right now that the risk of extinction is very real,” said Jessica Redfern, associate vice president of ocean conservation at the New England Aquarium. “To be able to save the species, we have to stop our direct human-caused impacts on the population.”
This is not the first time humans have driven North Atlantic right whales to the brink of extinction .
Their name comes from whaling: They were known as the “right” whale to hunt because they spend time relatively close to coastlines, often swimming slowly and near the surface, and they float when dead. They also yielded large amounts of the oil and baleen whalers were after. So humans hunted them to near extinction until it was banned in 1935.
Many of those same characteristics are what make right whales so vulnerable to human-caused dangers today. Because they’re often near the surface in the same waters frequented by fishing boats, harbor pilots, and shipping vessels headed into port, it’s easy for boats to collide with them.
“They’ve been called an urban whale,” said Redfern. “They swim in waters that humans are using; they have high overlap with humans.”
To reduce the risk of vessel strikes, ships over 65 feet long have to slow down during set times of year when the whales are likely to be around. In the southeastern U.S., the speed limits are in force during the winter when the whales are calving; off the New England coast, the restrictions are in place in the spring and summer when they’re feeding. Regulators can also declare voluntary speed restrictions in localized spots if whales are seen, known as dynamic management areas.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, in 2022 proposed expanding those restrictions in three ways.
First, the new rule would cover larger geographical areas. The protection zones would extend down the coast from Massachusetts to Florida at various times of year, instead of only applying in certain distinct areas.
Second, the change would apply the speed limits to smaller craft like fishing boats, rather than only ships over 65 feet.
Third, the new rule would make the speed restrictions — the temporary speed limits where whales have been spotted — in dynamic management areas mandatory.
Since NOAA published and gathered feedback on the proposed rule in 2022, whale advocates have been clamoring for the agency to implement it. Those calls have increased in recent months as dead right whales have washed up on beaches.
“There have been three deaths, and that has been really devastating this year, and two of them are related to vessel strikes,” said Redfern. “It’s just highlighted that absolute urgency, the necessity of getting this rule out.”
A leading boating industry group is speaking out against the expanded speed restrictions, arguing they could hurt small businesses in the recreational boating industry.
“We are extremely disappointed and alarmed to see this economically catastrophic and deeply flawed rule proceed to these final stages,” said Frank Hugelmeyer, president and CEO of the National Marine Manufacturers Association, in a statement. “The proposed rule is based on incorrect assumptions and questionable data, and fails to distinguish between large, ocean-crossing vessels and small recreational boats.”
Right whale scientists have documented in recent years that small, recreational boats can injure and kill right whales. At least four of the lethal vessel strikes since the current restrictions began in 2008 have involved boats smaller than 65 feet and thus not subject to that speed limit, according to Redfern.
NOAA estimated that, based on the size and placement of the propeller wounds, the boat that killed the months-old calf this year was between 35 and 57 feet in length — too small to fall under the existing speed restrictions, but subject to the new rule if it were to be implemented.
In his statement, Hugelmeyer also pointed to new marine technologies aimed at detecting right whales in the water to reduce vessel strikes without expanding the speed rules.
Scientists like Redfern remain skeptical, though.
The tech “offers a lot of promise,” she said, but the speed limits are proven.
“It’s really important, I think, that we rigorously evaluate the technology that’s proposed to make sure that it is going to achieve the same type of risk reduction that we see with the slowdowns in expanded areas,” she said.
Many groups, meanwhile, have raised concerns that offshore wind turbines could harm whales. There is no evidence of that, according to NOAA.
