The traditional Turkish Gulet is a handmade vessel crafted from wood by highly skilled master craftsmen. Also known as motor sailors, Gulets are extremely comfortable and ideal for long sea voyages as well as inshore coastal trips.

The origin of Gulets can be traced back to the Bodrum area in Turkey but the growth of a demanding market led to their construction being started in Bozburun, Marmaris, Fethiye and Istanbul. High quality and durable wood such as teak, maun and iroko are chiefly used to construct beautiful and sturdy Gulets.

GULET TYPES

Gulet: The most popular type of traditional yacht for the "Blue Cruise" is the gulet. It is a cruising yacht with large, rounded stern area which is well-suited for comfortable eating and lounging. Gulets usually have ketch (marconi) or schooner-rigging, with one, two or three foresails. Their lenghts change between 15 to 55 meters and they accommodate 6 to 24 persons in 3 to 12 cabins with private shower and WC.

Aynakic (Ketch): It has a raised, squared-off stern that allows space for additional cabins below compared to a gulet. There may be a large master cabin at the stern. They accommodate 6 to 24 persons in 3 to 12 double bedded cabins with private shower and WC. They are generally ketch (marconi)-rigging and measure 15 to 55 meters.

Tirhandil: It is the oldest type of local wooden boat with a pointed stern which is suited best for sailing in Aegean waters. Originally most had lateen sails; now the rigging varies from sloop to cutter to gaff. They normally measure between 11 to 24 meters in lenght and accommodate 6 to 10 persons in 3 to 5 double bedded cabins with private shower and WC.

FACILITIES ON GULET

The design of traditional Turkish Gulets has indeed evolved along the ages and a modern day Gulet is a plush and comfortable blue cruising boat varying from 11 to 55 meters (36-180 feet) in length. The length of the Gulet is proportional to its passenger capacity. Gulets are furnished with great taste and style to offer maximum comfort and facilities to the passengers on board. Each standard cabin in a Gulet has portholes, wardrobe, mirror, air conditioning system, en-suite shower and WC. Master cabins are furnished beautifully with sofa sets, dresser, work desk and Jacuzzi or hydro massage shower to pamper the guests on board. There are separate cabins for the crew.

The deck area is exceptionally spacious and complemented by the finest sailing equipment, sun mattresses and cushions so that passengers can enjoy a pleasurable vacation at sea! The very first meaning of the word ‘gulet’ is actually very interesting since it is in a big relation with the blue seas and the beautiful nature. Apart from the etymology, the gulet has been a boat type appropriate for various activities such as fishing and transportation. How Gullets Gained Popularity

After answering the question ‘ what is gulet ?’, lets continue with the history of it. The gulet started to serve for mercantile purposes at the very beginning. What is Gulet and How to Charter One

Gulet is a traditional wooden motor-sailing vessel meant for comfortable cruising. The history of gulets is somewhat veiled in secrecy. It remains uncertain how gulets got their name - whether it comes from the Italian word "guletta" or the French word "goullette". This schooner type of vessel is used as a sweeping net, trawl net or sponging vessel in Turkey in the Aegean and Mediterranean.   

Gulets we know today are known as the Bodrum type of schooners. They date back to the beginning of the 1970s when they were created as a result of the need to carry tourists who began visiting the Aegean region and especially Bodrum and Marmaris at the end of the 1960s, to nearby bays. These gulets had chambers and seating on the back of the deck as opposed to gulets used in fishing or sponging till those years.  

Although charter gulets do sail when the winds allow, they are most of the time propelled by engine power . They are configured as motorsailers, with diesel engines to provide primary power, while sails offer additional strength.   

Gulets have a raised bow, a broad, flat stern, the main foremast and a secondary mast aft. Their broad beam provides plenty of deck space and spacious cabins below decks. 

Gulet Charter Types and Services

Gulets come in many sizes , ranging from small 15-meter-long craft to luxurious 33-meter air-conditioned vessels with every convenience and luxury imaginable. Charter gulets offer hotel-like accommodation in comfortable air-conditioned cabins with bathrooms and enough storage for all your luggage. Gulet Charter Holidays

A typical gulet charter agreement includes the gulet , crew , insurance , and fuel for 4-5 hours of sailing per day without port taxes and fees. Half board is in many cases included in the price.

Typical Day on a Gulet Charter

A typical day on a gulet ship is not as different from a day on board a sailboat . Except there is less sailing done. The first day on board a gulet looks like this.   

Upon the arrival of the gulet, you are assisted into your cabin. Once you settle, there will be a welcome meeting held on deck. This meeting will also include the briefing regarding the route, as well as the security briefing about life on board.   

The cruise starts right after the meeting, or the following day, depending on the weather conditions and guests’ arrival times. The usual duration of cruising is 3 to 4 hours per day . Charter gulets usually visit a bay or two every day. The food however was a little poor in content and didn't offer much choice. If you like to party, this tour is for you. If you do not like to party, this tour is NOT for you. Overall, great tour. Got to go to all the locations and see everything I wanted to. Everyday, breakfast is served with hot cheesy eggs, cold cuts, coffee (instant) fruit, oats, bread. Lunch is always 4 courses; salad bread, carbs, hot meat and veggies, and then dessert. BBQ was great: save room for chicken wings! Every night, happy hour from 9-10:30pm. Drinks were a good deal here but generally expensive on the boat. Happy hour involves loud house music. If you like that, great. If you want to sleep…this is not the trip for you. Cocktails on the ship are made weakly. Barely any alcohol, which they may do on purpose. I did not like the beer, a bit hoppy, but others enjoyed it. The first day we start with a 3 hour trip after lunch to get to the first location. Markska. Small town to grab dinner and drinks. Cute. I went to a wine bar and a great restaurant that has no menus bc the fish is caught daily! It’s called Kalalarga. The wine bar was Spina bar. The second day we were off to Mljet National Park. Nothing to do there except go to the park. I really enjoyed the kayaks. Seemed too hot to hike or bike. Then we were off to Spian. Do the BBQ, as there are very very very limited food options here. BBQ was great: save room for chicken wings! Sunset was good. Final day was Dubrovnik. Not much to do here. Do a walking tour and/or buggies. Cruise can arrange them on whatever days you like. I liked the walking tour a lot! Easy way to see all the sights. Again, great trip for groups, solo travellers. Not really couples or families. This trip is for folks who want to stay up late and party. All this said, i loved the trip. However, I believe there was a lot of misbehavior ignored or unbeknownst to the crew. We were a group of 10 friends who decided to go on a gulet cruise in Montenegro. The idea was to see the beautiful Adriatic Sea and to spend our time on the boat. We booked a gulet through a company called Boutique cruises. We were really satisfied with their service.

The care and attention received from all of the crew to ensure a comfortable experience.

The staff was really nice, they would give us suggestions for places, the food was very delicious. The boat room is pretty small and the bathroom also, but you’re not gonna spend a lot of time there anyway. They stop everyday in nice swim spots and the boat we have been on had also stand-up paddle board which I think it’s a very cool idea.

Ultimate guide to a gulet sailing experience

Gulets are classic handmade wooden yachts very unique to Turkey and are mainly built in Bodrum and Marmaris on the southwestern coast of the country. They are traditionally two-masted or three-masted vessels about 20 to 30 metres long.

What can I expect from a gulet sailing experience?

A gulet sailing experience is nothing short of idyllic. The Mediterranean coastline in Turkey is beautiful with numerous islands dotted off-shore just waiting to be explored.

Each gulet cruise will have multiple breaks in different scenic bays, small fishing villages, with lots of stops for swimming and snorkelling. You can also bathe in hot springs, see some ancient temples and churches, and enjoy great Turkish and Greek food on the islands.

Will we sail all day?

At night we find a beautiful bay or seaside village to moor up in, with other gulets as your neighbours. In good weather conditions, you sail around three to four hours per day. The captain may sail a bit longer to make up time if the weather didn't permit more sailing the day before.

What can I do on board the gulet?

During your time on board and sailing you do little bits of nothing and truly have a holiday. Swimming, tanning and laying around on the deck relaxing, together with hearty meals are the things to look forward to.

The crew also keep basic snorkelling equipment on board for anyone wishing to spot some sea life during one of the many stops.

What facilities can I expect on board the gulet?

Although the gulets can look similar from the exterior, internally some are extremely luxurious whilst others are more basic.

Traditionally Gulets were purely sail-powered, but these days also have diesel engines to help them along if the wind is still.

All gulets feature comfortable below deck cabins, the vast majority with en-suite bathrooms (toilet, basin, shower), a spacious indoor common area also known as the saloon, and a large deck that is decorated with cushions.

Gulets have between two and ten cabins, depending on the size of the vessel.

The gulets we like to use most have set departure dates that anyone can join and have six en-suite cabins, carrying up to 12 people in total.

When is the best time to go on a gulet sailing experience?

The peak season for gulet sailing is from July to August, with the shoulder seasons of June and September also popular and a little cheaper. On some routes, the boats operate into May and October.

Our shared boat itineraries from Marmaris to Fethiye are four days, from Bodrum to Gokova and back to Bodrum eight days, and our tours from Marmaris to Fethiye and back to Marmaris are also eight days long.

Some of these tours take in several Greek islands along the way. All of these start and endpoints are easily accessible by domestic flights from Istanbul and many low-cost airlines also fly directly into Bodrum and Dalaman (which serves both Fethiye, around 45 minutes away and Marmaris, which is just under a two-hour drive).

We can arrange transfers to and from the airport and the start/finish of your gulet cruise on request.

How big is the crew on a gulet?

Your crew is made up of a captain, a chef and three to four helpers depending on the size of the vessel.

What meals can I expect on a gulet sailing experience?

You are served three main meals per day as well as a tea time refreshment. All meals are served on deck.

Breakfasts are typical Turkish spreads such as olives, cheeses, fruits, bread, pickles and yoghurts.

Lunches are light yet hearty and include items such as pasta, salads, rice and stews.

Dinners are feasts in the form of barbeques whether meat, chicken or fish, served with salads and sides. On the gulets, we enjoy the meals around one large table and everyone on board eats together, which is an essential part of Turkish life.

After dinner, the guests turn in for the night. Despite having their own private cabin, many people prefer to sleep on the deck as the summer nights are warm and tranquil and its a great pleasure to sleep under the stars while hearing the soft sounds of the waves lapping ashore or against the boat.

Overall, gulet cruises are one of Turkey's tourism highlights and one of the country's great holiday experiences. They can be enjoyed on their own as a short holiday, or easily added onto a longer stay in the country, perhaps as an extension onto one of our other Turkey tours.

Gulet Rental is being operated by traditional Turkish wooden boats, from all the marinas which are known around the Mediterranean and Aegean Coast, including Antalya, Kas, Fethiye, Gocek, Marmaris and Bodrum. Each gulet rental offers well-equipped yachts, local harbour fees, fuel expenses fort he engine and air-conditioning, transitlog, using water, crew, bedding.

This traditional boat type is a favourite for the Blue Voyage. With its broad, rounded stern it is ideally for relaxation, conversation and sociable dining.

Gulets are motor-sailers designed for leisurely cruising and are usually between 15 and 30 metres in length. They can accommodate between six and fifteen passengers and each cabin has its own private bathroom.

The 'ayna kıç' (meaning 'mirror-stern' in English) is a close relative of the gulet, but instead of being rounded like the gulet, the stern is flat. This flat stern is its main advantage, because it allows space for two extra cabins at the rear.

With the increasing demand for space in blue cruise tourist, the 'ayna kıç' has become more popular than the original gulet, although sailing purists prefer the gulet, or, even more so, the 'tirhandil'.

The Tirhandil is a traditional boat type with a single mast, long bow, pointed stern and a fairly large hull. Because of its uncluttered space on deck, Bodrum sponge-divers favoured this design. True sailors are said to prefer Tirhandil's, too. Their length varies between 10 and 20 metres.

TURKEY GULET YACHT

A gulet is a classic wooden, motorized, and sailing boat that is perfect for long sea voyages and close-to-land cruises.

Traditional Turkish gulets are made-to-order boats that skilled artisans construct from wood. Because they provide a very comfortable cruising experience, gulets, often referred to as motor sailboats, are perfect for coastal excursions and lengthy sea cruises.

We are aware that the first gulet construction began in Turkey’s Bodrum region. However, production is also taking place in Bozburun, Marmaris, Fethiye, and Istanbul as a result of the expanding market and demand.

Types of Gulets

Tirhandil is the oldest local wooden boat type with a pointed stern and the best-suited wooden yacht for sailing. Today, the equipment has changed from sloop to lifeboat and from sail to sail; the majority of them are three-corner sails.

They do not construct them on particularly lengthy decks, often between 15 and 25 meters, like other kinds. The same standards apply to their cabins. If you like sailing, this is the best option.

Accommodation on Gulets

Traditional Turkish gulets have evolved in appearance over time. A modern gulet today resembles a high-end floating hotel and can be anywhere between 15 and 55 meters (50 and 180 feet) in length. Gulet length and passenger capacity are not inversely related.

A 20-meter gulet, for instance, might contain three guest cabins or six. The cabins must be smaller in order to accommodate additional cabins of the same size. But in general, taller gulets make up vessels with six or more multi-cabs.

Every cabin on gulets of different shapes and sizes was created with the needs of the passenger in mind, including a bed, wardrobe, separate shower, and toilet.

However, extra comfort amenities like sofa sets, dressers, work desks, and jacuzzis are also available, depending on the size of the rooms and the level of luxury of the boat. There are separate cabins for personnel in the guest cabins.

MOSCOW (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday Moscow is in dialogue with with the United States on the issue of bringing home jailed Americans Paul Whelan and Evan Gershkovich and the Kremlin hopes to “find a solution,” even though “it’s not easy.”

Putin spoke about Whelan and Gershkovich during his year-end news conference in response to a question about a recent offer the Biden administration made to secure the two men’s release. The U.S. State Department reported it earlier this month, without offering details , and said Russia rejected it.

“We have contacts on this matter with our American partners, there’s a dialogue on this issue. It’s not easy, I won’t go into details right now. But in general, it seems to me that we’re speaking a language each of us understands,” Putin said.

“I hope we will find a solution,” he continued. “But, I repeat, the American side must hear us and make a decision that will satisfy the Russian side as well.”

Speaking to reporters in Washington, U.S. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said the U.S. has “put multiple offers on the table,” including “one significant offer that we made as recently as a few weeks ago.”

“We have seen those offers rejected every time by the Russian government,” he said.

Miller said Washington would welcome Russia engaging seriously in talks that would lead to the release of Gershkovich and Whelan but that “so far we’ve seen them refuse to take us up on our proposals, and we hope that they will change the way they handle this going forward.”

Whelan, a corporate security executive from Michigan, has been jailed in Russia since his December 2018 arrest on espionage-related charges that both he and the U.S. government dispute. He was sentenced to 16 years in prison.

Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal reporter, was detained in March while on a reporting trip to the Russian city of Yekaterinburg, about 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) east of Moscow. He was accused of espionage — Russia’s Federal Security Service alleged that the reporter, “acting on the instructions of the American side, collected information constituting a state secret about the activities of one of the enterprises of the Russian military-industrial complex.” He has been behind bars ever since.

The Lefortovo District Court in Moscow on Nov. 28 ruled to extend his detention until the end of January, and the appeal Gershkovich has filed against that ruling was rejected by the Moscow City Court at a hearing Thursday.

Gershkovich and the Journal deny the allegations, and the U.S. government has declared him to be wrongfully detained. Russian authorities haven’t detailed any evidence to support the espionage charges.

Gershkovich is the first American reporter to be charged with espionage in Russia since 1986, when Nicholas Daniloff, a Moscow correspondent for U.S. News and World Report, was arrested by the KGB. He is being held at Moscow’s Lefortovo prison, notorious for its harsh conditions.

Analysts have pointed out that Moscow may be using jailed Americans as bargaining chips after U.S.-Russian tensions soared when Russia sent troops into Ukraine. At least two U.S. citizens arrested in Russia in recent years — including WNBA star Brittney Griner — have been exchanged for Russians jailed in the U.S.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has said it will consider a swap for Gershkovich only after a verdict in his trial. In Russia, espionage trials can last for more than a year.

Lynne Tracy, the U.S. ambassador to Russia, attended the court hearing for Gershkovich’s appeal on Thursday and told reporters that “Evan’s ordeal has now stretched on for over 250 days. His life has been put on hold for over eight months for a crime he didn’t commit.”

“Although Evan appeared as sharp and focused as ever today in the courtroom, it is not acceptable that Russian authorities have chosen to use him as a political pawn,” Tracy said after the hearing.
