'Virgin River' Scores Season 7 Renewal Ahead Of Season 6 Netflix's Longest-Running, Current Scripted Series

With a renewal for Season 7 even before Season 6 premieres later this year, Virgin River is officially Netflix ’s longest-running original series that’s currently on the air.

Ahead of its sixth season, the streamer has confirmed that a seventh season of the show has been greenlit.

Thanks to the early renewal, Virgin River is now the longest-running, current original scripted series, as well as the longest-running English drama series in Netflix history, Deadline reported.

What is Virgin River about?

According to an official show description, “ Virgin River is a romance story centered around nurse practitioner Melinda Monroe’s (Alexandra Breckenridge) move to the remote California town of Virgin River. Yearning for a fresh start, Monroe discovered that small-town living isn’t quite as simple as she expected and that she had to learn to heal herself before she could truly make Virgin River her home. The series is based on the New York Times bestseller and beloved Harlequin book series written by author Robyn Carr. The Virgin River collection features more than twenty books, and together they have sold more than 13 million copies. “

The logline for the forthcoming sixth season is as follows:

Against the backdrop of Mel and Jack’s romantic spring wedding season, this sixth installment promises fresh twists and turns, escalating love triangles, delightful wedding drama, as well as uncovered secrets from Mel’s father’s past which will transport us to the magic and mystique of Virgin River in the 1970s.

Who stars in the series?

The series stars Breckenridge, Martin Henderson, Tim Matheson, Annette O’Toole, Colin Lawrence, Benjamin Hollingsworth, Zibby Allen, Sarah Dugdale, Marco Grazzini, Kai Bradbury, Kandyse McClure, Mark Ghanime,

Patrick Seasn Smith is the showrunner, and he executive produces alongside Sue Tenney, Amy Palmer Robertson, Roma Roth, Christopher E. Perry, Robyn Carr, Erin Cardillo and Richard Keith.

When do Season 6 and Season 7 of ‘Virgin River’ premiere?

Virgin River will return to Netflix on Dec. 19 for its sixth season. All five previous seasons are currently available to binge on the streamer.

No word yet on when season seven premieres.

Fans won't have to leave Virgin River any time soon.

On Wednesday, Netflix announced that the hit series, based upon the novels by Robyn Carr, has been renewed for a seventh season. The sixth season is still forthcoming with all 10 episodes set to drop on the streamer on Dec. 19. Season 7 will also feature 10 hourlong episodes.

The Virgin River cast shared a video on Instagram celebrating the news. "Good news, Virgin River is confirmed to come back for Season 7! More love, drama, and small-town charm coming your way. You're very welcome," the cast announced.

Season 6 is set to follow the run-up to the wedding of Mel ( Alexandra Breckenridge ) and Jack ( Martin Henderson) , diving into Mel's past and her relationship with newly discovered biological father Everett (John Allen Nelson). It will also address Preacher's (Colin Lawrence) trial for the death of Wes (Steve Bacic) and the chef's burgeoning romance with Kaia (Kandyse McClure).

Other storylines in the mix for season 6 include the health and wellbeing of Doc (Tim Matheson); the relationship between Denny (Kai Bradbury) and Lizzie (Sarah Dugsdale) as they await the birth of their child (hopefully, the renewal doesn't mean she'll be pregnant as long as Charmaine) ; a growing romance between Mike (Marco Grazzini) and Brie (Zibby Allen); and Brady (Benjamin Hollingsworth) once again finding himself ensnared in the plotting of local drug dealers.

The season is also set to feature flashbacks to the 1970s, telling the story of when Mel's mom met Everett. Netflix is developing a prequel series about Mel's parents, and many believe these flashbacks could serve as a backdoor pilot.

But in addition to that prequel series, they'll also be making a seventh season of the small-town romance. Who knew one town could contain so much drama?

Virgin River enthusiasts are over the moon as they've received thrilling updates about the beloved Netflix series' continuation, even before the latest instalment hits screens.

Deadline has revealed that the heartwarming drama has been greenlit for a seventh season, a full two months prior to the release of the sixth season to its eager audience.

The upcoming romantic adventures featuring Mel Monroe (played by Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson) are set to grace our screens this coming December.

An additional 10 episodes have now been commissioned, setting Virgin River on course to become the longest-running English-language drama series in Netflix's history.

The show's stars, including Sarah Dugdale, Tim Matheson, Kandyse McClure, Zibby Allen, and Colin Lawrence, took to Instagram to share the exciting update, sparking a frenzy among devoted fans, reports the Mirror .

Sarah Dugdale and Kai Bradbury

"Good news, Virgin River is confirmed to come back for Season 7!" announced the official show account in an Instagram post.

"More love, drama, and small-town charm coming your way. You're very welcome."

Adapted from Robyn Carr's bestselling novels, the series has evidently struck a chord with Netflix viewers, prompting scores of them to express their joy in the comments section.

A particularly ecstatic fan commented: "Congratulations @virginriverseries on your season 7 renewal!!!

"We are so so happy and excited for the cast, crew, writers, and everyone who works so hard to bring us this show! You totally deserve all the success!! Also can't wait to see what is in store for season 6!!"

One enthusiast proclaimed: "Sooo pumped! Whooooo! Can't wait for December 19th!

"As for season 7 can't wait for that either, hopefully we won't have to wait long to see that one! Virgin river is the best show keep the new seasons rolling!!"

Another chimed in with a jubilant: "HOORAY!!!!!! Thank you for this exciting announcement!!!!! I cannot wait for A LOT more VIRGIN RIVER!!!!!!"

With its seventh outing, Virgin River has outpaced formidable competitors such as The Crown and House of Cards, thereby becoming Netflix's longest-running English-language drama series.

Yet, it needs a couple more seasons under its belt to topple the record set by the Spanish hit Elite, which culminated gracefully after its eighth season this year.

Virgin River season 6 will premiere Thursday, December 19 on Netflix.

Virgin River Scores Season 7 Renewal, Becomes Netflix’s Longest-Running Drama

By: Author Tyler Johnson

  • X (Twitter)

We have some very good (and very early) news regarding one of Netflix ‘s most beloved shows.

Ahead of the December 19 premiere of Virgin River Season 6 , the show has already been renewed for a seventh season.

News of the renewal comes courtesy of Deadline , who notes that the series is now poised to become the longest-running current show, as well as the longest-running English-language drama in Netflix history.

Christmas Planning - Virgin River Season 5 Episode 12

Both Grace and Frankie and Orange is the New Black ran for seven seasons, but the former was a comedy, and the latter was submitted as such for award consideration in its first two seasons.

With this renewal, Virgin River will outlast Netflix stalwarts such as The Crown and House of Cards.

The list of the streamer’s longest-running shows is made up mostly of 30-minute comedies like The Ranch, BoJack Horseman, and Fuller House, making Virgin River a major outlier.

Only the Spanish-language high school drama Elite has been around longer, with eight seasons (but fewer episodes).

Jack Frost? - tall - Virgin River Season 5 Episode 12

The success of Virgin River doesn’t come as a total shock, of course.

The show is based on a series of popular novels by Robyn Carr. And anyone who’s ever turned on the Hallmark Channel can attest to the popularity of small-town romances.

But Virgin River has transcended the usual tropes and limitations of its genre, a fact that’s helped the series in developing a legion of cultishly devoted fans.

As for what comes next for the long-suffering couple at the heart of the show, that’s anyone’s guess.

Kiss in the Woods-tall - Virgin River Season 5 Episode 12

Mel and Jack got engaged in Season 4, and Netflix execs have promised that we’ll see a wedding sometime in Season 6.

But you can bet there will be quite a few obstacles between these two lovebirds and the altar.

And that’s just the sixth season. With a seventh on the way, it sounds like we’ll get to see at least a year of the couple’s new life as newlyweds.

It’s exciting stuff, and it’s nice to know that a relatively low-budget show that’s devoid of big-name stars and action scenes can still find this sort of success.

Amelia's Boyfriend -tall - Virgin River Season 5 Episode 12

It’s a story almost as inspirational as Mel and Jack’s.

How a Life’s Commitment to Excellence Saved 155 People Aboard US Airways Flight 1549

A conversation with capt. “sully” sullenberger.

Date: Monday, Nov. 4 Time: 4 p.m. (Doors open at 3 p.m.) Location: Elliott Hall of Music

Purdue University alumnus Capt. “Sully” Sullenberger piloted the safe landing of a commercial airliner on the Hudson River in January 2009, saving all 155 passengers and crew in what became known as the “Miracle on the Hudson.”

Just after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport in New York City on Jan. 15, 2009, a flock of Canada geese took out both engines on US Airways Flight 1549. Capt. Sullenberger told his passengers to brace for impact, and he and First Officer Jeff Skiles deftly and calmly landed the plane on the Hudson River. With the Manhattan skyline as a backdrop, Sullenberger stayed on board until the passengers and crew were safely off the plane.

In his 2009 memoir, “Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters,” Sullenberger describes the events surrounding the heroic water landing that became known as the “Miracle on the Hudson.” Along with his life story, in the book Sullenberger discusses leadership, responsibility, service and how his studies at Purdue prepared him well for the challenges he would face.

“Highest Duty” also inspired a Hollywood movie about his life. The 2016 film “ Sully ” was directed by Clint Eastwood, and Tom Hanks played Sullenberger.

After his gallant feat 15 years ago, Sullenberger spoke throughout the United States about the business of human factors in flying — matching human and machine — and how those human factors helped him land an airplane safely in the water.

“The facts tell us what to do and how to do it, but it is our humanity which tells us that we must do something and why we must do it,” Capt. Sullenberger famously has said.

In June, the Sullenberger Aviation Museum opened in Charlotte, giving people a chance to see up close the US Airways Airbus A320 airliner that Sullenberger landed on the Hudson. US Airways Flight 1549 was bound for Charlotte. Formerly known as the Carolinas Aviation Museum, Sullenberger Aviation Museum was renamed to honor the famous pilot.

Sullenberger’s most recent book, “Making a Difference: Stories of Vision and Courage from America’s Leaders,” was published in 2012 and explores what it takes to lead and inspire.

In 2010 Sullenberger, who earned his master’s degree in industrial psychology in 1973 from Purdue, joined President Emeritus Martin Jischke as the only two individuals to receive the university’s Neil A. Armstrong Medal of Excellence . Sullenberger also received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the College of Liberal Arts, an honorary doctorate from Purdue, and spoke at the university’s Spring 2011 Commencement ceremony.

During Indiana’s Bicentennial celebration in 2016, Sullenberger was featured in the West Lafayette Public Library’s exhibition “Pop! Goes Purdue.” The project featured works from local artists who highlighted pop culture figures from Purdue as their subject matter.

A native of Denison, Texas, who learned to fly as a teenager, Sullenberger received his undergraduate degree from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1973. He earned the Outstanding Cadet in Airmanship Award there. Within weeks, he was at Purdue taking summer classes to complete his master’s work. He also received a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Northern Colorado.

Sullenberger served as a fighter pilot for the U.S. Air Force from 1975-80 and became a flight leader and training officer. Afterward, he joined Pacific Southwest Airlines, which later became US Airways, as a pilot.

He has more than 57 years of flying experience and has served in various safety and investigative capacities in the airline industry. As a safety advocate and expert, he also has served on the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Advisory Committee on Automation in Transportation, and most recently served as the U.S. ambassador and representative to the International Civil Aviation Organization, a United Nations specialized agency, having been appointed by President Joe Biden in 2021.
