The Hylas H63 was designed for maximum comfort and safety while cruising the coast or enjoying an extended stay of living life on the water.

SPECIAL FEATURES

  • Built using modern techniques and precision
  •  Alternating layers of Twaron and fiberglass making the hull light with optimal impact resistance
  •  Elegant cabinetry using an array of wood types and finishes
  • Specialized countertops and cabinets offering plenty of storage
  • Breathtaking plush interiors, perfect for entertaining or relaxation
  • Luxury galley kitchen with top of the line modern appliances
  • Customized to represent each owner’s specific style and taste

HULL DESIGN

German Frers designed the H63 hull for a great sailing experience whether for a day or for long-distance cruising. The construction uses modern vacuum-bag techniques and selective coring for superior stiffness and reduced weight. While the fine modern entry slices smoothly through the worst chop, the broad stern enables great surfing speeds, a luxury master cabin aft, and a huge deck cabin under the stern steps—big enough to house any number of inflatable water toys and dive gear. The standard shoal fin keel is bulbed and draws 7’ 8”. The deep modern spade rudder offers a tight turning radius for crowded marinas, clear wheel feedback for a sporty feel, and exceptional performance in all ocean conditions.

Hylas 44 is a 44 ′ 1 ″ / 13.5 m monohull sailboat designed by German Frers and built by Hylas Yachts USA and Queen Long Marine between 1984 and 1993.

Drawing of Hylas 44

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

From BlueWaterBoats.org :

The Hylas 44 from designer German Frers is a center cockpit offshore cruiser known for her good looks and build quality from Queen Long Marine of Taiwan. Introduced in 1984 production spanned eight years before ending in 1992. These days Hylas 44s are particularly popular for their accommodation layout, her idiosyncratic hull shape carries her maximum beam far aft allowing for a wide aft stateroom. You can find them on the market today with variations in the keel configuration (deep or shoal) as well as their rigs with both cutter and sloops being offered.

Queen Long Marine commissioned German Frers to design two cruising sailboats in the early 1980’s. These became the racy Hylas 42 and the more “cruiserly” Hylas 44 in 1984 which now are part of a well known Hylas series of yachts.

The Hylas 44 in particular became popular among charter boat circles in the Caribbean with Bill Stevens of Stevens Charters and then Dick Jachney of Caribbean Yacht Charters (CYC) purchasing most of the boats. Private dealers throughout the world also sold these Hylas yachts. In 1990, CYC became the sole importation agent for new Hylas yachts. By 1992, CYC had Queen Long add a sugar scoop stern to the 44. In 1995, they introduced a wholly new German Frers designed 46 footer with a different cabin trunk, deeper forefoot, and fully integrated swim platform. These 46 Hylas yachts are currently in production as of 2010.

The accommodations are the most attractive feature. All 44’s have a offset berth forward and settee with a private head and shower. The main salon includes a dinette arrangement to port and a starboard settee. Leading to the master stateroom are dual walk-throughs, a tremendously popular feature. Along the port side is the master head and shower while the galley is along the opposite side. The master stateroom has a centerline queen on all except the first thirteen hulls which had a berth offset starboard side.

Construction

The hull is solid hand laid up fiberglass by Queen Long Shipyards, the Taiwanese builder. The construction includes an impressive stiffening network of full length fore and aft stringers and transverse floors. The deck is balsa or Airex cored and fastened to the hull via stainless bolts and 5200. Chainplates are massive and tie into glassed over stainless steel I-beams. Queen Long was already well known for their Kelly Petersons and Stevens 47’s before producing the 44.

The Hylas 44 is a wet boat. Offshore, a steady stream of water slides over the fine bow and back to center cockpit because of the low freeboard. You often see complete enclosures. She never pounds but slices through waves. Downwind with her sexy beam at 3.8 ratio, she surfs down waves.

Buyers Notes

Many Hylas 44s underwent the hard life of a Caribbean bareboat charter. Caribbean Yacht Charters ran a purchase and charter operation out of the British Virgin Islands. The owner saved on the purchase of a new Hylas 44 from Queen Long but leased the yacht into charter for four years. It is difficult to tell between non-chartered and chartered 44s. Tell tale signs are high engine hours, eyebrows along the cabintrunk, and a Hylas logo in the cockpit. Late in production in 1992, Queen Long decided to extend the 44 with a swim platform into the 45.5. This 45.5 has a different deck mold. Subsequently, owners retrofitted 44s with swim platforms. These aftermarket 45.5s often have unique issues.

As of 2010 the asking prices are in the approximate range of: Hylas 44, 1984-1986 $100k-$150k USD (have smaller cockpits and offset aft berths) Hylas 44, 1986-1992 $150k-$175k USD Hylas 45.5, 1989-1992 $175k-$200k USD (aftermarket swim platform) Hylas 45.5, 1992-1994 $200k-$250k USD (new deck mold, factory swim platform)

Hylas 60

Let’s play a game of “what if.” So what do you think would happen if you commissioned your new $2 million flagship from a naval architect who’d enjoyed an unparalleled career spanning multiple decades designing some of the most memorable cruising and racing yachts ever conceived, such as a long line of iconic Swans? Who was well-known in both Europe and the Americas—you know, Western civilization—as one of the legendary figures in contemporary boat design? A guy like, oh, say, Argentinian Germán Frers.

And what if you teamed up Frers with one of, if not the , most well-established boatyards in the Far East, a family-run company that’s been in business for just over four decades, an outfit where the torch has been passed down through the generations, and that’s now run on the sales side by a pair of young siblings who not only wish to make their mark, but who are also obsessed with making the product the best it could be? A firm like, we don’t know, maybe Queen Long Marine in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

What you might get—in fact, what we have gotten from this exact collaboration of Frers, the artist, and Queen Long, the artisans—is the new Hylas 60, the second of our Best Luxury Cruisers for 2021. And it’s pretty darn wonderful.

2021 Boat of the Year Winners at a Glance

Murphy grew up on a 1970s-era Taiwanese yacht, back in the day when many an offering built on the island was disparaged as a “leaky teaky.”

Murphy said: “I went through this boat closely, taking many pictures, because I also do some work with the ABYC for their study guides, and these are exemplary, exemplary installations. They’re really showing, in many ways, the high watermark in marine craftsmanship. So, whatever ideas people might have had about Taiwanese builders before this, this company totally turns that upside down.”

And Murphy was just getting started: “In terms of design, it felt very wholesome. We’ve talked thematically about some of the ways that innovation is used; some boats felt a little bit tired, like they were actively avoiding any innovation. Other boats may have strayed a little bit too far in that direction. I thought this boat was beautiful in the way they were taking on technology and innovation in a very seamanlike way. One example is the CZone digital-switching distribution that they use for electricity. It’s a 24-volt DC system with just a handful of 12-volt appliances. But the digital switching allows you to cut down on the wiring that’s run all through the boat. At the same time, there’s a manual backup. So if you have any trouble with any of the circuits, every single circuit is backed up by an actual physical fuse that you can swap out. And under sail, it felt really good. Again, thematically, one of the things we’ve seen throughout the whole fleet this year is twin rudders. And we saw them again here as well.”

Murphy concluded: “They even used 316 L stainless steel for the tankage. The L means ‘low carbon’ so that you’re using the same metal for the plate as for the welding material itself. Again, this is a thing where Far East builders had a horrible reputation because they were using cheap equipment. You’d hear about the black-iron Chinese tanks that would sort of corrode out after a while. This is top-of-the-line quality. And it’s everywhere.”

“The Hylas was just gorgeous,” Pillsbury seconded. “From the low-profile cabin top, to the thoroughly modern-looking sprit, to the wraparound windows, it was just a beautiful yacht. There were multiple blueprints with labeling for all of your plumbing, every single pump, every single through-hull fitting, the electrical circuit, and so on. The wiring was all color-coded and labeled. The level of detail was incredible. I mean, every seacock had a label on it. Engraved! Not written with a magic marker; it was engraved as to what that seacock did. There was even a little display in the galley showing you the temperature in both refrigerators and the freezer. Truly, the attention to detail in the boat was really quite something from a build standpoint.”

And then, finally, there was the ultimate compliment: “This Hylas feels like a boat built by sailors,” Pillsbury said. And winning sailors at that.
