35 foot boat guide: how to find your perfect vessel.

  • December 3, 2019

Whether you’re considering downsizing from a larger yacht or upgrading from a smaller bowrider or center console, a 35 foot boat is an excellent option for boaters seeking the ability to do a wide range of activities on the water while still owning and operating a very manageable vessel. Safely handling your boat is of utmost importance and most experienced boaters can handle a 35 foot boat. Moreover, when jumping in size to, say, over 40 feet in length,  insurers  may request new boaters utilize a captain for a period of time. Typically this isn’t an issue for 35 foot boats.

Is this size right for you? The primary factors to consider when answering this question are your planned uses for the boat and the number of people you plan to regularly have aboard the vessel. Depending on the type of boat, a 35 foot boat can typically handle most boating activities such as offshore fishing, cruising and more. As you get up in size, boats can also accommodate more guests on board, and typically a 35 foot boat is sufficient for most families and groups. If overnighting is planned, you’ll want to ensure you’re narrowing down your options to those with the appropriate accommodations.

What type of boat is best for you? If fishing is your love, a center console boat is ideal, but dual console boats are gaining in popularity even for dedicated anglers due to the enhanced versatility. A 35 foot center console or dual console is a sturdy boat that can handle offshore conditions easily. If cruising and pleasure boating is your scene, boats that get into the size range of 35 feet and up can begin coming with more spaciousness and amenities for your enjoyment. Some boats like the Carver C34 Coupe are an incredible couples boat with luxurious accomodations for a couple that spends their time cruising and overnighting.

What else should you be considering as you plan a 35 foot boat purchase? Propulsion is an important consideration. Outboard engines are quite popular, but some boats will have inboard, sterndrive and jet propulsion systems.

Other questions you may want to record answers for include:

  • Will you be doing more day boating or long range cruising? The range of a particular vessel can be important depending on how you answer this question.
  • Where do you plan to keep the boat?
  • Is speed important to you?
  • Are there bridge height considerations you need to factor in where you will be keeping the boat?
  • Are there depth and draft considerations to factor in based on where you will be keeping and operating the boat?

New vs. Used Boats

Once you know the type and general size of boat you plan to purchase, the question of new vs. used is one that must be answered. Often times, new boaters purchase new boats while experienced boaters might opt for a used vessel more frequently. And it’s not terribly difficult to see why that might be the case. Buying a new boat gives a new boater more comfort and security, and it limits the unknowns that come with jumping into boating. The boat won’t have any broken down components and will come with a warranty. It’s certainly an easier path to start boating than with a used boat.

Experienced boaters can pursue the used boat market easier. They’ve likely taken a depreciation hit on a newer vessel previously. Maintenance and repairs is a less intimidating arena for seasoned boaters, and perhaps even more importantly, they can navigate the used market and know what to look for based on previous experience. Of course, navigating the used boat market is much easier with a knowledgeable broker regardless of the boater’s experience level, but still the comparison here between new and experienced boaters holds.

If you’ve purchased an automobile, a similar dynamic exists when choosing between a new and used boat. New boats are more expensive, come with the latest features and technology, come with the security of a warranty, won’t require repairs for a while, but also tend to depreciate more quickly. While a used boat (or automobile) costs less on the front end, the cost of ownership on an annual basis will typically be higher due to higher maintenance and repair costs. If you plan to own the boat for a number of years, it can be advantageous to buy new since you’re extending your ownership through the worst part of the depreciation curve and it can be a number of years before major repairs or other costs surface.

If you scour the used boat market, you’ll find some impressive vessels for cheap! These boats are often quite old, however, and the perceived value of these boats can be misleading. While there can be good value in the used boat market, this is typically only true to a certain point. As boats age many years, their value on the used market drops considerably. When planning your purchase, it’s typically better to go with a smaller, newer boat than a very old, large boat. Sticking with higher quality will often yield a better ownership experience over time.

If you do go the used route, be sure to get a survey from a reputable surveyor. If you don’t know a good surveyor, ask other boat owners at a local marina. Not only will the survey tell you quite a bit about the boat you’re considering for purchase, but the surveyor can help you get the problems fixed prior to taking delivery of the boat.

Lastly, if you purchase used, you’ll want to thoroughly review the maintenance records to determine if there is any deferred maintenance that will fall on you. Not all boat owners keep their boats maintained as they should, and if you’re getting into a situation with deferred maintenance, your cost of ownership is likely to be higher than normal.

Purchasing & Insuring Your Boat

If you’re planning to finance part of your boat purchase, lenders will typically want between 10 and 20% of the boat purchase as a down payment. If you’re borrowing more than $150,000, lenders will generally want more documentation such as tax returns, proof of income and proof of liquidity. Interest rates are typically based on the size of the loan and the credit score of the buyer, though every situation is unique.

You’ll need an insurance policy for your boat, and it needs to be factored into your total cost of ownership. A general rule of thumb is that insurance premiums will run 1.5-2% of the value of the boat. You can read more about boat insurance  here .

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of boat should i get.

The type of boat you purchase will be mostly dictated by how you plan to use the boat. If you want to get offshore for fishing, center consoles and larger dual consoles might be worth considering. For dayboating, consider a runabout or open bow type vessel. If overnighting is key, larger runabouts with small cabins or express cruisers with better accommodations are likely your best bet.

Should I buy new or used?

This is a common question regardless of the type or size of boat. With a used boat, your upfront cost is less, but your cost of ownership will often be higher due to higher maintenance and repair costs. Buyers new to boating often go with a new boat due to ease of ownership and included warranties.

How can I learn more about potential boat options for me?

A boat show is often a great starting point to see a lot of boats. After that, building a relationship with a reliable sales person at a local boat dealer or working with an experienced broker is a great way to get advice on options worth considering.

Yachts vs. Boats: What are the Differences?

is a 35 foot boat a yacht

Table of Contents

Many people use the words “boat” and “yacht” interchangeably, and some lean on the latter to make their ride sound more impressive. But what are the key differences between boats and yachts?

First, let’s look at some broad definitions of a boat, a yacht, and other related vessels.

  • “Boat” can refer to just about any kind of vessel— towboat , fishing boat , center console , houseboat , and so on.
  • “Dinghy” designates a small boat with a human or wind means of propulsion including a rowing dinghy or sailing dinghy. It also refers to a tender to a bigger boat or yacht.
  • “Ship” is a large commercial boat, often used for distance travel and transport of goods or passengers – cruise ship, container ship, etc.
  • “Yacht” is typically a larger boat with luxury amenities used as a recreational vessel— motor yacht , sailing yacht .
  • “Superyacht” is a large yacht and is often also called a mega yacht . The delineation used to be at 80-feet but again, with today’s size creep, anything under 100 feet would just simply be called a yacht.

So, yacht or boat? Let’s dive deeper into the elements that differentiate a boat from a yacht.

Size of the Vessel

Yachts and boats of various sizes.

Some place a hard line at 35 feet. Below that, you have a boat and above, it’s a yacht. However, that’s an artificial differentiator.

Just 30 years ago, a 30-foot boat was considered large and could have been a yacht but as recreational boats grow longer, the term yacht has been pushed up the scale.

That said, a well-kept 40-foot boat designed for recreation can technically still be called a yacht (although larger vessels are likely to cost more, price isn’t a good indicator of yacht status primarily because it fluctuates with brand, age, and amenities).

Check out local yacht rentals near you to understand how size plays a difference.

What it’s Used For

A yacht is a vessel designed for recreational purposes. It generally operates on open waters (rather than small lakes or rivers) and has accommodations for overnight guests.

A cruise ship, on the other hand, accommodates a large number of passengers in a commercial setting whereas a yacht carries a smaller number (of paying or non-paying) passengers for private recreation.

Onboard Technology

yacht navigation electronics

Advanced technology for navigation, communications, and system operation as well as redundant systems for safety can be found on a yacht that is likely to venture farther.

Again, there are caveats because today’s towboats that are fun day boats also feature technology such as GPS and digital switching that integrates many electrical and electronic features.

Propulsion Types

This is a tricky one. “Yacht” comes from the Dutch word “jaght” which referred to a sailing vessel that was used by the navy to capture pirate ships and later for recreation by the affluent.

Today, a yacht can be a large sailing vessel or a motor yacht. All larger yachts will have a motor for propulsion whether they have sails or not. Sailboats by design have smaller motors so trying to put a horsepower minimum on yacht propulsion is simply inaccurate.

Some define a yacht as having multiple crews to operate the vessel and tend to passengers or guests. The larger the yacht, the more crew will be required to navigate, maintain and service the vessel. That said, a couple who owns a 50-footer can call their boat a yacht although it’s owner-operated.

Luxury and Amenities

Yacht luxury interior.

This is perhaps the best measure of a yacht. If the vessel offers accommodations, a galley , a head , and is luxurious in its presentation, it’s most likely a yacht.

That said, there are lots of center console fishing boats and towboats that are pretty nicely equipped these days and they wouldn’t be called a yacht.

All yachts are boats, but not all boats are yachts—and the lines are blurry. The word yacht elicits images of posh seafaring experiences while a boat evokes ideas of fun and perhaps work. Do some research to learn what size and type of boat or yacht is best for you .

To a degree, the point at which a boat becomes a yacht is in the ear of the beholder but if you focus on size, amenities, and the type of use, you’ll be able to discern the difference. Then all that remains is to find a way to spend time and have fun on any kind of vessel.

10 New Cruising Sailboats Under 35 Feet

  • By Cruising World Staff
  • Updated: November 3, 2020

It wasn’t so long ago that 30- to 35-foot cruising sailboats were likely to be the largest yachts found in many a harbor. And while 40-something and even 50-something footers are all the rage at boat shows today, there’s a lot to be said for setting sail on a boat big enough to carry family and friends, but still small enough to be easily maintained and handled alone from time to time. Small cruising sailboats are simple to dock or tie up to a mooring, and finding long-term marina space is easier as well.

Choosing a cruising sailboat, no matter the size, is a big decision. And it helps to have a trusted list of boats to get started. Here, then, is a look at 10 of the best daysailers , weekenders and coastal cruising sailboats under 35 feet that are all in production and can be purchased new.

Alerion Sport 30

is a 35 foot boat a yacht

A quarter-century ago, Garry Hoyt launched what would come to be known as the daysailer genre with the introduction of the Alerion Express 28, a boat designed by the late Carl Schumacher that featured a minimal interior and a large cockpit where an owner and guests could enjoy the simple joy of sailing. Traditional and lovely looking—but with a quite modern underbody and a powerful sail plan—Hoyt, ever the marketer, proclaimed the boat to be “the prettiest girl at the dance.”

Since then, a number of siblings ranging from 20 to 41 feet have been added to the Alerion family, including the Alerion Sport 30, which retains the graceful sheer line, oval ports and stylish overhangs of the original Schumacher design. Yet with input from naval architect Langan Design Partners, it also embraces a solid measure of performance-oriented DNA.

Bavaria Cruiser 34

is a 35 foot boat a yacht

In every Boat of the Year contest, it seems, a boat rises up after sea trials to make a lasting impression on the judges. For 2018, that boat was the Bavaria Cruiser 34.

Says Boat of the Year Judge Tim Murphy, “The Bavaria was a lovely boat to sail. It has a single rudder, and she answered her helm just beautifully in the conditions we had today. We started off with around 10 knots of breeze that built to 13 to 15 knots. As a sailboat, it was just a pleasurable sailing experience, among the best we had during our judging. It was among the boats that felt like a really happy sailing experience.

Beneteau Oceanis 30.1

Beneteau Oceanis 30.1

Sailed as part of the 2020 Boat of the Year sea trials, the 31-foot-3-inch Beneteau Oceanis 30.1 was the compact yacht best-equipped and spec’d out as a dedicated cruising boat, and not coincidentally, it was also awarded the title of Best Performance Cruiser for 2020. But don’t let her cozy interior accommodations fool you; this is also one peppy little vessel.

Dehler 34

The 2017 Boat of the Year (BOTY) contest featured a stellar crop of crossover cruiser/racers; however, when all the testing was said and done, our independent panel of judges was sold on the Dehler 34, naming it the year’s Best Performance Cruiser. Designed by the highly regarded Judel/Vrolijk naval-architecture consortium, whose reputation was fostered by longtime success in international yacht-racing circles, the 34-footer combined contemporary good looks and a sweet turn of speed with better-than-average comfort and accommodations below. It didn’t hurt that the boat, nicely equipped at $215,000, was the least-expensive entry in the entire 2017 fleet. All in all, it proved to be a winning formula.

Dufour Grand Large 360

is a 35 foot boat a yacht

Dufour Yachts introduced its new 360 Grand Large model to CW’s Boat of the Year team in 2018 as a coastal cruiser intended for a couple or perhaps a small family. With that in mind, judge Alvah Simon found numerous clever elements to praise within the boat’s 35-foot-2-inch hull—a relatively modest LOA compared to the many 40-, 50- and 60-footers on display at the U.S. Sailboat show in Annapolis, Maryland.

After a roughly 10-year hiatus from the U.S. marketplace, the Slovenian builder Elan is back in a big way. For the 2017 Boat of the Year contest, the company launched a pair of new boats in the States, including the Elan E4, a 34-foot-9-inch performance cruiser with an emphasis on performing, designed by renowned British naval architect Rob Humphreys. The brand has been in business for seven decades and lately is perhaps even better known in America for its skis. Not surprisingly, given its complementary product lines—lots of sailors are fine skiers—its boats are as sleek and sporty as its boards.

Grand Soleil 34

Grand Soleil 34

Way back in the 1970s, when the well-known Italian boatyard Grand Soleil was just getting started, its first model was a Finot-designed 34-footer. With over 300 units sold, it was an instant success, and launched the company on an upward trajectory that spanned the intervening decades, mostly with an ongoing series of much larger, more complex racer/cruisers. For 2020, the builder decided to return to its roots with a completely revamped Grand Soleil 34, and it’s a terrific boat.

Value. How does one determine it? Price is most certainly a factor. In the case of new boats, and our Boat of the Year competition, it means something more. As sailors, we wish to recognize good boats that not only are affordable but offer other, tangible rewards. The ability to get couples and families out on the water, to have a weekend escape, to take them on coastal vacations and even maybe a sabbatical to the islands, all without breaking the bank. For 2019, the judging panel determined that one boat had the potential to do these things better than the rest, which is why they awarded the Best Value prize to the Hanse 348.

With a price tag under $200,000, during sea trials the Hanse 348 wowed the judging team from the get-go. “In only about 8 knots of breeze, we were seeing 5.7 knots upwind and pointing very nicely, and even registered 6.5 knots once we cracked off,” said Tim Murphy. “It’s a pretty sweet little boat.”

Italia 9.98

Italia 9.98

Of the performance cruisers that made their North American debut in 2020, in terms of sheer appearance, the futuristic 34-foot Italia 9.98 was easily the most distinctive. There are actually two versions of the boat: the 34 Club—which is the cruising alternative, the primary features of which are its twin wheels—and the 34 Fuoriserie—the racing model, and the one we tested, with its tiller steering being the identifying characteristic.

J/99

Beginning with the popular little J/24 way back in 1977, J/Boats has become famous for its steady introduction of terrific racing and cruising boats, almost all of which shared one main characteristic: They sailed like a witch. More than four decades later, having built more than 50 separate, mind-boggling models, the Johnstone family that designs, markets and sells the brand shows no signs of slowing down. Their latest offering, for 2020, was another fast and fun racer/cruiser: the 32-foot-7-inch J/99.

What Size Boat is Considered a Yacht?

How big does a boat have to be to be considered a yacht?

Boat purchasing can be a bit confusing if you are new to the market. There are various brands, types, and terminology which can quickly befuddle the boat seeker. One such term is the word “yacht”. In most instances, the term yacht gives a vibe of luxury and exclusiveness that other boats do not have. Yet, oftentimes one will find that boats which are not exceptionally large have the title of Yacht attached to them. Does this mean that they are not yachts, or does it mean that the term Yacht is a bit subjective? Neither. The size of the boat as well as the style in which it is constructed determines if it is a yacht or just a boat. What Size Boat is considered a Yacht? This article will tell you.

The Length of a Yacht

Yachts are typically considered to be vessels which are longer than 30 feet. In most instances, boats which are smaller than 30 feet have the outboard motors and are usually single to double engine configured. These size vessels are properly called luxury craft, not yachts. Boats which would fall into the category of the luxury craft would include the cabin cruisers, double console boats, and many of the single decked sports cruiser boats.

The length of the boat does not determine the title in itself. Yes, the larger and more expensive the boat is, the more apt it will be to be dubbed a yacht. But, for example, if you were to purchase a 35 foot walkaround boat, it would not be considered a yacht by mariners. On the other hand, a 60’ HydraSport would be considered a Yacht. If you were to purchase a 100 foot vessel or larger, it would be considered a super-yacht.

It is more than the horizontal, it’s the vertical as well?

When considering the size of the boat, the L.O.A does play into the overall terminology. Also, the horizontal size, more specifically the cabin, decks, and the hardtops, contribute to whether or not a boat is considered a yacht. As the yacht is known for being a luxurious vessel capable of sailing from one port to another. The boat must have a means of accommodating such travels. Boats which do not have a cabin space are not, technically, Yachts but luxury cruisers or luxury boats. Boats with a cabin which are over 36’ are usually considered miniature yachts. Once a boat exceeds the 45’ mark and has the cabin or multi-deck configuration, are they considered to be full yachts. Boats over the 100’ mark, as stated earlier are super-yachts.

Does the size of the motor matter?

The size of a Yacht does not have a great deal to do with the engine power or configuration. Granted, most serious mariners do not consider outboard engines to be yachts, but rather to be luxury vessels if they are in anything less than a tri or quad configuration. Inboard motors are almost always considered to be a yacht as the size to accommodate such motors are typically larger than the 35’-45’ range.

The motor size has been debated and is still a grey area when it comes to the classification of a boat being either a yacht or a luxury craft.

What really defines a Yacht?

While the size and the power are considerations, the yacht is defined by its luxuriousness. This means that the attitude of the boat, the materials used, the function of the boat, and its uniqueness all play into its title. Yachts are the boats which have a function on the water, but also demand attention on the water. They are not the run of the mill boats, but rather the elite.

14 Great Pocket Cruisers in 2023

  • By Victor Tan
  • Updated: July 20, 2023

Pocket cruisers and mini yachts are generally vessels under 50 feet in length overall, and can include express cruiser designs, flybridge yachts as well as either monohull or catamaran hull forms. They are cruising boats easily handled by a small, or even shorthanded, crew. Pocket cruisers generally have wave-taming hull designs and have the ability to take on sporty seas, offer comfortable accommodations belowdecks with one or two staterooms for extended voyages, “homelike amenities,” and the ability to cruise as slowly or as quickly as an owner desires with inboard- and outboard-power options. These pocket-cruising boats have the range for longer voyages , can pull up in skinny water at the sandbar thanks to shallow drafts, and head over the horizon where cruising adventure awaits. Pocket cruisers are true multitasking yachts. When it comes to family and couples cruising, it’s hard to beat a well-built and well-equipped and pocket cruiser.

Best Cruising Boats Under 50-Feet

The following 14 pocket cruisers and mini yachts are all vessels we’ve seen, been aboard, and tested. They are listed in no particular order.

  • Hood 35 LM: high-tech, family-friendly pocket cruiser
  • Galeon Yachts 375 GTO: mid-size boat with plenty of below-deck space
  • Aquila 42: sleek power catamaran ready to entertain
  • Azimut Verve 42 : small, yet mighty yacht ready for open water
  • Hinckley Yachts 35: luxury picnic cruiser with range
  • Beneteau Gran Turismo 45: sleek cruising yacht with all the amenities
  • Solaris Power 48 Open: eye-catching power yacht with 360-degree views
  • Cruisers Yachts 42 GLS: luxury cruiser yacht with powerful outboard options
  • Back Cove 34O: modern outboard power combined with classic Downeast styling
  • Picnic Boat 40: speedy and fuel-efficient vessel with great looks
  • Aquila 36: comfortably seat up to 20 guests for fun on the salt
  • Boston Whaler 350 Realm: multitasker built for fishing and entertaining
  • MJM 35z: sporty, aesthetically pleasing, cruising-conscious features and elegant lines
  • Greenline 39: sturdy-looking lines and environmentally-friendly power

When Android co-founder, Rich Miner, wanted a new family-friendly pocket cruiser , he turned to a custom-penned C.W. Hood design and a Lyman-Morse-built 35-footer, which has a timeless Down East profile matched to seriously modern technology under the hood.

This yacht looks like a traditional, cold-molded Down East dayboat, but actually, it has everything, from Hamilton HJX Series water-jet drives to a planned Sea Machines autonomous command-and-control system . Top speed: 40-plus knots.

Quick Specifications

Galeon yachts 375 gto.

Even the remnants of Hurricane Ian, couldn’t dissuade the Galeon Yacht 375 GTO from its cruising mission. The small yacht’s wave-splitting hull form is paired to torque-filled 600 hp Mercury Verado outboards , giving this fun-in-the-sun boat a 47-knot top hop.

The 375 GTO is a speedster, to be sure, but it’s also so much more. Just about every aspect of the main deck seating is transformable and multifunction, from the aft seating to the alfresco dining abaft the helm, and beyond. It also has a family-size and eminently cruise-worthy belowdecks space for four guests, all while providing a foredeck entertaining lounge too.

The Galeon Yachts 375 GTO ticks all the boxes for an easy-to-handle and sporty cruiser.

Galeon Yachts 375 GTO

Aquila 42 Yacht Power Catamaran

Following the success of its 44-, 54- and 70-foot power catamaran models, Aquila has launched the stable-as-a-table, owner-operator-ready Aquila 42 Yacht Power Catamaran .

The Aquila 42 is the entry point into the builder’s yacht line and is noteworthy for its ability to accommodate anywhere from a two- to four-stateroom layout, depending on the owner’s cruising requirements. There are alfresco spaces to manage the sunset cruise with friends and family, including a foredeck lounge area that can be accessed via centerline steps from the flybridge. The Aquila 42 is available with several Volvo Penta diesel-engine options .

Aquila 42

Azimut Verve 42

Want to cruise from Florida to Bimini in about an hour? The Azimut Yachts Verve 42 can do that thanks, in part, to triple 450 hp Mercury Racing outboards and a hull designed to dice-and-slice a seaway. Top hop: 45 knots. The Verve 42 also has style for miles with a fine entry, raked hardtop, and a razorlike sheerline accented by sweeping hull glass from bow to stern. It’s striking.

With accommodation for a family of four, the Verve 42 is also solid under the hull tokeep everyone safe on those passages. The Verve 42’s hull is built of fiberglass and uses vinylester resins for blister protection. The yacht’s deck and hardtop are comprised of carbon fiber for strength without added weight. This all means that the Azimut Verve 42 is built to CE Classification Type A , making it suitable for sea voyages where winds can exceed 45 mph and seas to 13 feet.

Azimut Verve 42

Hinckley Yachts 35

The Hinckley Yachts 35 takes everything that yachtsmen like about this pedigreed-brand’s classic profile and infuses today’s modern outboard power to create 40 knots of sheer fun wrapped in sheer luxury.

This 35-foot Hinckley is built on a Michael-Peters-penned hull form with a fine entry, wider-than-average chines and a moderate deadrise. While the boat is built to sprint when desired, it’s also a relatively economical cruiser. For instance, a comfortable 24-knot cruise the Hinckley Yachts 35 has a 276-nautical-mile range.

It also has a tech-build thanks to vacuum-infused carbon-fiber composites and epoxy resin. An integrated interior structure is infused with the hull adding rigidity. The hull is then post-cured in an 80-foot oven, further strengthening the structure.

Hinckley 35

Beneteau Gran Turismo 45

The Beneteau Gran Turismo is the flagship of the builder’s four-model GT series, which also includes 32-, 36- and 41-foot models.

The Gran Turismo 45 ’s cruise-centric layout includes two staterooms and two heads belowdecks, as well as a galley down. There is also a dinette for meals and a settee for rainy-day lounging. Entertaining guests and enjoying the sun is the primary mission of the main deck.

Beneteau Gran Turismo 45

Solaris Power 48 Open

The Solaris Power 48 Open was the first powerboat from this longtime builder known for its sailing yachts, ranging from 40 to 110 feet length overall. The Solaris Power 48 Open is notable for its wave-slicing plumb-bow design, high freeboard forward and 32-knot-plus speed. Power is twin 480 hp Volvo Penta IPS650 diesels.

The high freeboard keeps the deck dry and help creates sizable volume belowdecks with an average 6-foot-6-inch headroom. This enables real estate for either one or two staterooms. With the single-stateroom setup, there is a forepeak master stateroom while an L-shaped settee converts to sleeping accommodations for family or occasional guests. Interior wood options are oak or walnut.

Solaris 48 Open

Cruisers Yachts 42 GLS

Outboard-power cruising aficionados will appreciate the triple-engine options for the Cruisers Yachts 42 GLS . The 42 GLS we got aboard had the triple 400 hp Mercury Verados , which produced a top hop of 45 knots, but triple 450 hp Verados are available. Triple 350 hp Mercury Verados are the standard engine option. No matter the power arrangement, this express cruiser can easily be used for wakeboarding and tube towing. The 42 GLS is designed to handle the rough stuff too, with a fine entry and 21-degree transom deadrise.

For cruising enthusiasts, the 42 GLS has a master stateroom with an athwartships and a nearly queen-size berth, and the lower salon’s U-shaped dinette converts to a queen-size berth for the kids.

Cruisers Yachts 42 GLS

Back Cove 34O

Combining modern outboard power with classic Downeast styling, the Back Cove 34O touts award-winning standards with cruising in mind. The 34O is equipped with twin 300 hp Yamaha outboards, engines that allow the Newport International Boat Show’s 2018 Best Powerboat Under 35 Feet winner to travel up to 214 nautical miles at 24 knots on a 250-gallon fuel tank.

Belowdecks, the 34O has an island double berth and a split-head arrangement with the toilet to port and a separate shower stall to starboard. On the main deck, a U-shape dinette to port accommodates four or more guests on the Back Cove Yachts vessel. The 34O’s galley is equipped with a Cuisinart microwave, a two-burner Kenyon electric cooktop and a Vitrifrigo fridge and freezer.

Picnic Boat 40

Hinckley Yachts unveiled its first Picnic Boat more than two decades ago. Now, after two previous, sub-40-foot models, the Maine-based boatbuilder has developed its largest and most advanced model to date: the Picnic Boat 40.

Twin 480 hp Cummins diesel engines paired to twin Hamilton 322 jet drives propel the yacht to a 30-knot cruising speed and 34 knots on the pins. With optional twin 550 hp Cummins diesels, cruise and top-end speeds jump to 35 and 38 knots, respectively.

There is an L-shaped settee with a table and a wet bar on the main deck to port. The helm station is forward and to starboard with a benchseat for two. There is also a companion seat across from the helm. Belowdecks, there is 6-foot-2-inch headroom, and the dinette table drops to form a California-king berth for overnights and weekending.

hinckley picnic boat 40

Aquila Power Catamarans started its line with 44- and 48-footers, and now the builder’s Aquila 36 takes the line into the midsize market.

The 36 features a single, main-living area from bow to stern, helped in part by the vessel’s 14-foot, 7-inch beam. The boat can comfortably seat up to 20 guests for fun on the salt. Several Mercury Verado engine options are available for the Aquila 36, including twin 250-, 300- and 350-hp four-strokes. With the 350s, the Aquila has a top-end speed of 37 knots.

Other notable features include a fiberglass hardtop, a dinette, a cooktop, a fridge, a sink and a smokeless grill. Belowdecks, there are two staterooms with nearly queen-size berths, en suite heads and 6-foot-6-inch headroom in each.

Boston Whaler 350 Realm

From fishing and entertaining guests to diving and overnight cruising, Boston Whaler ‘s 350 Realm is a multitasker. And it’s fast, too. It’s powered with either triple 300 hp or triple 350 hp Mercury Verados. The 350 Realm can reach a top speed of 46 knots.

At the helm, two Raymarine displays provide vital navigation data. The captain can take in the displays’ view from a doublewide helm seat. There’s a flip-down platform for standing when needed and a footrest when desired.

There is a V-shaped berth that converts into a double berth with a filler cushion. The separated head has a VacuFlush MSD and a hot-and-cold shower. Owners also have the option to add a microwave and a flat-screen TV.

Boston Whaler 350 Realm

The MJM 35z can reach a top speed of 44 knots and a cruising speed of 33 knots on its optional 350 hp Mercury Verado outboards; twin 300 hp outboards are standard on this MJM Yachts vessel. Additionally, the 35z can travel up to 304 nautical miles on its 250-gallon fuel tank.

The 35z has a flush-deck layout and to port is space for an electric grill, a baitwell, a sink, an ice maker and a fridge. There are two Stidd helm seats—one for the helmsman and the other for a copilot—that rotate to face the rest of the seating aft. In the cabin is V-shaped seating forward that can be converted to a berth.

Owners also have the option of adding a Seakeeper 3 gyrostabilizer and a full-length Bimini top to shade the cockpit.

MJM 35z

Greenline 39

Greenline Yachts ‘ vessels are aptly named for their environmentally friendly means of moving about; the Greenline 39 is no different. The Slovenian yacht manufacturer produces two types of this model: hybrid and solar.

If owners opt for the latter, the 39’s four solar panels atop the salon power all of the vessel’s systems for three hours. With the power of the sun, the 39 can achieve a max speed of 6.5 knots and a cruising speed of 4 knots. The hybrid type uses those same panels to help power a 220 hp Volvo Penta D3 with a Mahle electric-drive system. Owners have the option of replacing the standard engine with a 370 hp Yanmar 8LV diesel.

Belowdecks, scissor berths provide accommodations for long weekends.

Shoot Out: 35′ Express Cruisers

  • By Kevin Falvey
  • Updated: January 10, 2008

Midsize express cruisers around 35′ are hot sellers. They’re not too big for handling solo, are roomy, and won’t break the bank. We picked four models with prices ranging from $220,000 to $279,000 and gave them our usual fine-toothed inspection. Not all are available with the same power, so to keep it close, we tested each with twin stern drives totaling between 600 hp and 640 hp. Inboards and diesels are available, but gas stern drives are still the most popular.

CROWNLINE 340 CR , www.crownlineboats.com 618-937-6426

HOT STANDARDS: Hardtop; windlass; vacuum-flush commode; 7.3kW genset; 16,000-Btu a/c; galvanic isolator; MerCruiser DTS controls; camper canvas; 48-quart carry-on cooler.

PERFORMANCE: Even though it has the least power and is the heaviest of the group, it hit a top speed of 43.3 mph. That’s within 1 mph of the others, denoting an efficient hull. At 30 mph, it burned 28 gph, a shade over 1 mpg, for a range of 186 miles. Excessive bowrise while getting on plane required the use of tabs to maintain forward visibility. It docked like a champ with the drives alone. The optional Axius joystick control made it even easier.

CRUISEABILITY: After a day on deck, the standard mahogany cabin sole makes this cabin cozy-and easy to clean. It has the largest genset, ensuring plenty of power at anchor, and its galvanic isolator protects against corrosion while plugged into its dual 30-amp shorepower. Hardtop means less canvas to deal with.

HIGHS & LOWS:

HIGHS: High cabin trunk, no side-decks, and a slab master bunk (instead of an island berth) make this cabin biggest in class. Excellent mechanical rigging and installation.

LOWS: No sidedecks makes deploying fenders and spring lines tricky. Hardtop requires you to duck when going forward to the bow. High cabin trunk makes you reach way down to tie off to a cleat.

FOUR WINNS V 338 , www.fourwinns.com 231-775-1343

HOT STANDARDS : Hinged radar arch; 5.0kW genset; 12,000-Btu a/c; windlass; vacuum-flush commode; cockpit icemaker; cockpit refrigerator; port and starboard windshield wipers.

PERFORMANCE : This boat lifted onto plane more smoothly than the rest, with little noticeable hump and no loss of forward visibility. Credit the after-pods incorporated into its Stable-Vee hull. It topped out at 44.8 mph-and that’s with the full camper canvas up. At 30 mph, it burned 26 gph, or 1.1 mpg for a range of 204 miles. I had no trouble laying it side-to a dock while pointing into the wind-without turning on the thruster. It’s the loudest boat, posting higher decibels at all rpm.

CRUISEABILITY : Standard cockpit icemaker and refrigerator help you be a great host and provide extra cold stowage for cruising. Its 10.5-gallon water heater keeps the shower going. Folding arch gets you in where others can’t go. Companionway screen lets in air and repels bugs, so you can enjoy sleeping without the AC on.

HIGHS & LOWS

HIGHS: Swanky decor includes glass-fronted cabinets and grainy leather upholstery. The bowrail features a mid-height safety rail per ABYC. Handles well at all speeds.

LOWS: The head seacock is hard to reach. Bow thruster should have easier service access from within the boat.

MONTEREY 330 SY , www.montereyboats.com 352-528-2628

HOT STANDARDS: Bow sunpad; 40a battery charger; dual 30a shorepower; galvanic isolator; vacuum-flush commode.

PERFORMANCE : The 45-mph top speed this boat posted makes it the fastest of the group. It planed smoothly, without loss of visibility over the bow. Cruising at 30 mph, it burned 26.2 gph for a range of 216 miles. Boasting a fiberglass stringer grid, it has a firmer feel coursing through waves. At the dock, it was more responsive than the rest, possibly due to its 38″ engine spacing, which is 4″ wider than typical.

CRUISEABILITY : Standard aft convertible U-lounge/sunpad, bow sunpad, and cockpit chaise make this boat a hit for those who want to tan at the cove. The 40-amp battery charger is the biggest in this group and it has dual 30-amp shorepower protected by a galvanic isolator.

HIGHS & LOWS ****

HIGHS: Wonderful helm, featuring a sporty “muscle car” gauge array and dual flip-up bolster seats. Excellent engine compartment rigging. Loved the cabin interior as much as the cockpit sun island.

LOWS: Access to the bow thruster and the starboard side fuel tank’s supply line should be improved. Wires running into the arch not chafe-protected.

RINKER EC 330 , www.rinkerboats.com 574-457-5731

HOT STANDARDS: Camper canvas; windlass; cockpit blender; cockpit icemaker; cockpit refrigerator; 12,000-Btu a/c; 5kW genset; dual-sided shorepower inlets; auto. fire extinguisher system; 30a battery charger; Lowrance GPS; spotlight.

PERFORMANCE : This boat’s 43.8-mph top speed was preceded by a smooth transition onto plane and no loss of visibility over the bow. Powering along at 30 mph, it burned 23.8 gph, with a 1.3 mpg that gave a range of 190.5 miles. This was the lowest fuel burn at cruise, along with the smallest fuel tank. It delivered excellent docking control-without relying on the thruster-despite gusty winds.

CRUISEABILITY : Cockpit blender, cockpit icemaker, and cockpit refrigerator keep the party going and provide enough cold stowage for extended weekends. Rumble seat is the perfect place for a “sun-downer.” Fiddled counters keep goods in place. Standard GPS-hey, you need it. Port and starboard shorepower inlets are convenient.

HIGHS: Attention to serviceability: There’s a support pole to keep that engine hatch up if the lift fails. Fiddled countertops and a wastebasket in the head prove Rinker’s designers are boaters themselves. ****

LOWS: The other boats feature split flip-up bolster helm seats. Here only the skipper can stand and lean. Single 30-amp shorepower may not be enough for a boat with standard air conditioning.

The Bottom Line

Not one of these boats is a tub. The Rinker offers the most standard equipment and is rich with practicality, but its decor isn’t as plush and its styling isn’t as exciting as the others. The Crownline wowed us with style and substance, but we didn’t like that it needed trim tabs to see ahead while getting on plane. The Monterey is great looking and fast-always good things. But it’s short on standard equipment, despite its amped-up electrical system. We think an express cruiser should possess style, luxury, performance, a long standards list, and dollops of practicality. Which model does all that? The Four Winns 338 Vista. Put it at the top of your list.

Specification & Arrangements

is a 35 foot boat a yacht

When we created the original Picnic Boat 25 years ago, we were determined to empower boaters to escape for a moment or the day with those that mean the most. As our lives have gotten busier and as technology has evolved, those moments seem fewer and farther between. In the 1950s, Hinckley built 115 Kingfisher powerboats with inboard and outboard configurations. With the Hinckley 35, we have combined Hinckley design language with the benefits and performance outboard propulsion.

Secondhand boat buyers’ guide: 4 of the best 35ft sportscruisers for sale

  • Top stories

Nick Burnham argues that a 35ft sportscruiser is the optimum size and style of boat. Here are 4 options from Sealine, Cranchi, Beneteau and Birchwood

One of the many platitudes bandied around about boating is “the smaller the boat, the more fun you have”. Unlike “a boat is a hole in the water into which you pour money”, it’s somewhat inaccurate, otherwise we’d all be charging about in Williams Minijets and giggling insanely. Nonetheless, there is a faint ring of truth to it.

I’ve known several long-term boaters who’ve worked their way up to large luxury motor yachts with hot and cold running crew, only to realise that the joy has diminished sufficiently that they’ve worked their way back down again.

So what actually is the optimum size? I think the mid-30ft sportscruiser is in with a shout. Big enough to cross the Channel , small enough to single-hand, easy to slot into any marina and roomy enough for a week’s family cruise. Something, in fact, like one of these…

secondhand-boat-buyers-guide-35ft-sportscuiser-Sealine-S38-exterior

Sealine S38

Built: 2004 Price: £104,000

Launched at the London Boat Show in 2003, the S38 had a short yet successful career. By the time the SC38 (based on this model but offering a hard top option) was launched in 2007, over 100 S38s had been built by the Sealine factory, then in Kidderminster.

Interior Despite a fairly standard two-cabin layout, split by the saloon and galley in the centre, there are two particularly standout features. The first is in the surprisingly generous mid-cabin at the aft end of the accommodation. The two athwartship single beds you’d expect to find here are present and correct, but there is also a third bed in the lobby area at the head of the twins – a massive advantage if you have three children.

The other standout feature is at the other end, where rather than a single heads, the toilet and shower are split, one either side and both accessible from the master cabin forward or from the saloon.

secondhand-boat-buyers-guide-35ft-sportscuiser-Sealine-S38-interior

Lower saloon splits the two sleeping cabins along with a separate shower and heads

There are a few nifty details to the exterior too. The anchor hides neatly in a recess beneath the foredeck, rather than hanging over the top of the stem, and the forward sloping radar arch is thick enough to create a little shade over the helm as well as concealing the canopy in a neat clamshell storage locker. There’s also masses of cockpit seating and a small wet bar.

Performance

Sealine fitted various engine options, all twin sterndrive installations. The twin Volvo Penta AQAD 41 200hp motors fitted to this boat give a circa 30 knot top speed for a mid 20 knot cruise, the alternative KAD 44 (260hp) and KAD 300 (285hp) lifted the top speed into the mid thirties. Later boats got the D-series engines, either twin D4 or D6.

secondhand-boat-buyers-guide-35ft-sportscuiser-Sealine-S38-cockpit

Canopies pack neatly away into the radar arch when not protecting the open cockpit

The S38 rides a chop pretty well, with a low trim angle keeping the ride level. Rough seas can make things a little more bouncy, but nothing that can’t be solved by slowing down a little.

secondhand-boat-buyers-guide-35ft-sportscuiser-Beneteau-Monte-Carlo-37-exterior

Beneteau Monte Carlo 37

Built: 2008 Price: £127,950

In an era in which you can easily pay £120,000 for a cuddy cabin sportsboat with a single outboard engine, it’s staggering to look up the 2007 boat test of the Beneteau Monte Carlo and find that the base price with twin diesel engines for the soft top version was £147,000, including VAT. It’s French though, so things like a cockpit canopy and a windscreen wiper were extra. With a proper spec, the hardtop and larger engines this boat would have cost far more, but still…

It’s the usual central saloon and galley flanked by cabins either end, but with a twist. The forward cabin is pretty standard with its central double bed. But head aft and you’ll find the mid cabin on the centreline with its two beds running lengthways. It allows the cabin, and particularly the walkway between the beds, to sit deep in the centre of the hull, maximising headroom.

secondhand-boat-buyers-guide-35ft-sportscuiser-Beneteau-Monte-Carlo-37-cabin

The forward owner’s cabin is supplemented by a generous twin guest cabin further aft

The optional hard top on this boat offers far more protection and the ability to slide the roof back on a nice day or close it up in inclement weather. Beneath it, the helm gets a single bucket seat with a bench seat for two more alongside it. There’s a dinette and wet bar aft.

We tested a boat with the same twin Volvo Penta D4-260 engines as this example and recorded a very acceptable 33 knots flat out with a 28-knot cruise at 500rpm off max.

secondhand-boat-buyers-guide-35ft-sportscuiser-Beneteau-Monte-Carlo-37-interior

Not the highest quality fitout but the accommodation is bright, modern and spacious

Where this boat gets really interesting is the hull. Not only is it a twin-stepped hull, rare enough in itself, but it’s also an air step. What that means is that air is channelled through vents down pipes and released at the first step, meaning most of the boat is running on an air/water mix to reduce drag and soften the ride. Does it work? In the 3ft chop of our test it ran “very smoothly with hardly any slam”. And 42lph at 20 knots from a twin engine 37-footer is not too shabby.

secondhand-boat-buyers-guide-35ft-sportscuiser-Birchwood-370-exterior

Birchwood Commando 370

Built: 2003 Price: £64,950

The Commando 370 was quite the departure for Nottinghamshire based Birchwood Marine Limited when it launched at the London Boat Show in 1999. Well known for its comfortable, if slightly staid, aft cabin cruisers, it was the only open cockpit sportscruiser the marque had in the range and was designed to broaden the appeal of this British builder, and maybe even take on the mighty Princess and Fairline .

Offset stairs into the cabin mean that you must lead with your left foot every time, but they do free up space in the saloon, which is rather nicely finished. Cabins are a good size, especially the mid cabin, which has a generous lobby and two single beds 6ft 6in long that infill to create a double berth.

A particularly clever feature is the saloon table. Many boats have demountable tables but nowhere to stow them. On the Commando 370 it stores vertically against the bulkhead creating a headboard.

secondhand-boat-buyers-guide-35ft-sportscuiser-Birchwood-370-cabin

The two single berths in the mid cabin can be filled in to create one big double bed

The hull of the Commando 370 is actually that of the Birchwood TS34 and later 340, the extra length justifying the 370 badge created by a larger bathing platform. Scalloped topsides were a Birchwood trademark feature and the cockpit features an unusually high window line, giving extra protection at higher speeds.

When we tested the boat in 1999 it was from the rather unusual location of Chelsea Harbour on the River Thames in London. We took it down to the Medway where we achieved 31.7 knots on the (pre GPS) radar gun from its twin Volvo Penta KAD 43 230hp diesels. This boat has the KAD 300 285hp diesels, which give it 40 knots according to the broker.

Horseshoe-shaped cockpit seating is well protected by the raised helm and side windows

A wide cruising peed range and a level ride was how we described it at the time. Low noise levels merited a mention too.

secondhand-boat-buyers-guide-35ft-sportscuiser-Cranchi-Zaffiro-37-exterior

Cranchi Zaffiro 34

Built: 2002 Price: £69,950

A good-looking boat that offers great value, the Cranchi Zaffiro should be on the shortlist of any mid 30ft sportscruiser hunt.

The interior isn’t quite as ‘cherry ’n leather’ as a Fairline, but the pale linings and light upholstery look fresh and contemporary (and high-gloss wooden doors throw in a little contrast). Another classic two-cabin layout, one either end of the saloon, might be entirely conventional, but it’s a proven formula that works well.

The mid cabin features two single berths that infill to create a double – best of both worlds, and although the cabin bed is offset, it’s still able to be accessed from either side.

secondhand-boat-buyers-guide-35ft-sportscuiser-Cranchi-Zaffiro-37-cabin

Forward cabin is nice and bright with a large overhead hatch and two small portholes

The split-level cockpit has a raised section forward protected by a sweep of windscreen with space for crew on an L-shaped settee next to the helm. Drop down to the lower section aft to discover a big three-sided dinette that converts to a sunpad to port and a wet bar opposite.

Access forward is via narrow but perfectly useable 6-inch wide side decks, but unusually there is also access through a central opening section of windscreen – very handy for fast access forward from the helm.

Twin 5-litre V8 petrols were a fast but thirsty option, so twin diesels were more popular. Base diesel engines were Volvo AQAD 41 at 200hp but most got the more powerful KAD 43 230hp motors for a mid 30-knot top end. Some of the last boats got the new D4-260hp engines when they came on stream in 2005.

secondhand-boat-buyers-guide-35ft-sportscuiser-Cranchi-Zaffiro-37-interior

Interior finish isn’t as classy as some but the build quality and seakeeping is very good

We were given four consecutive days in the South of France to test the Zaffiro when it launched in 1997 – happy days! Sadly, our carefully crafted plan to spend them cruising from Antibes to Iles d’Hyères and back to St Tropez (all in the interests of serious consumer journalism) were thwarted by 25 knot Mistrals. They did at least give us the chance to test the seakeeping, finding a ‘useful sea boat and fun performance drive’.

Completely in keeping with its time, the Oceanis 35 adapts to different lifestyles at sea and throughout life.  The ocean’s your playground with this evolving cruiser. Made for cruising single-handed or with family and friends on seas the world over, she always delivers great speeds.

Exterior design

The Oceanis 35’s chined hull offers particularly surprising cruising comfort. Good and taut to aft and low on the water, the rigidity under sail of this cruiser takes her further and faster, with exceptional stability. It is a real joy to have two helm stations, a mainsail arch and a huge swim platform on a sailing yacht this size.

Interior design

The interior design’s strength stems from the evolving boat concept, which allows you to personalize the ambiance created by the fittings and woodwork. Whatever the layout, the incredible feeling of space inside is due to the impressive amount of headroom.

Evolving yacht

The Oceanis 35 comes in Daysailer, Weekender or Cruiser versions, which maintain the possibility of a later evolution in terms of living space organization.

is a 35 foot boat a yacht

Like a floating loft, open in every respect, even the layout of its cockpit, this version offers very generous space inside in an unpretentious fashion. The comfortable companionway opens into a single space, with absolutely no bulkhead.

An evolving yacht par excellence, this version offers a choice of layout with either two or three cabins. There is great freedom of layout: open or closed cabins, separate shower compartment, fitted galley, extra indoor/outdoor table, helm seats, and so on.

Much closer to the cruising tradition, the Cruiser version offers a choice between two or three bulkheaded cabins. However, this decision is never irreversible, since the partition closing off the fore cabin can be removed. This ability to open up space allows you to adapt it to the loft spirit of its sisters. You will love the large fitted galley opposite the saloon.

Is a 35 Foot Boat a Yacht?

Before we dive into the question of whether a 35-foot boat is a yacht or not, let’s first establish what exactly constitutes a yacht.

What is a Yacht?

A yacht is typically defined as a recreational boat or ship that is at least 33 feet (10 meters) in length and is used for pleasure cruising or racing. However, the term “yacht” can also be subjective and may be used to describe vessels that are smaller or larger than this benchmark.

Is a 35-Foot Boat Considered a Yacht?

In general, yes – a 35-foot boat can be considered a yacht. In fact, many manufacturers produce yachts in this size range. However, it’s important to note that the term “yacht” can also depend on other factors such as the vessel’s design, amenities, and intended use.

Factors That Determine Whether a Vessel Can Be Classified as a Yacht

  • Length: As mentioned earlier, the length of the vessel is an important factor when determining whether it can be classified as a yacht.
  • Design: Yachts are often designed with sleek lines and luxurious features such as teak decks and leather upholstery.
  • Amenities: Many yachts come equipped with amenities such as air conditioning, refrigeration systems, and entertainment systems.
  • Intended Use: While some yachts are designed for racing or day trips, others are built for extended cruising or even liveaboard use.

While many 35-foot boats can certainly meet these criteria and be classified as yachts, it ultimately depends on how the vessel owner chooses to define their boat. Some owners may prefer to refer to their vessel as a “cruiser” or “motorboat” instead of a yacht, regardless of its size.

Frequently Asked Questions

IFC is Insetta Boatwork's Internal Foiling System.

You can expect a significant increase in cruise speed; Improved handling and stability in rough conditions; Better acceleration; A boat that is less affected by increased payload; A 20-40% increase in fuel efficiency; and a 20-40% further cruise range! Additionally, the IFC technology will also provide a drier ride in choppy conditions and Provide for more responsiveness when turning at speed!

The system is a fixed setup, there is nothing to operate and there are zero moving parts.

The IFC Technology in effect smooths out rough seas by allowing the boat to run from wave crest to wave crest at a relatively smooth and stable attitude. The IFC System creates lift which help to in effect “Carry” the hull higher in the water. The system acts as a set of wings carrying the boat at speed, keeping the hull from having to follow each wave across its entire contour. In other words the surface of the waves have less effect on the hull as the IFC system is lifting the boat. Additionally, the aerodynamic lift created by the catamaran hulls creates even more lift at the bow of the boat, keeping the nose high and preventing the “slamming” or sneezing found in other catamaran hulls.

No, you don’t. The foils are flush mounted to the bottom of the keels of each sponson (as well as up in the tunnel.) At its centerline the main foil of the IFC system is only slightly lower than the keel line. The boat will easily load onto a standard catamaran trailer. There is no big contraption hanging way down under the boat.

Remember, the foils are INTERNAL to the tunnel. At its lowest point the main foil is only slightly lower than the hull and is higher than the props. Because of this the odds of striking the foils are extremely low. The boat is designed to be lifted by the foil. The structural integrity of the foil system is such that the weight of the boat could be supported many times over by the foil. As such, if you did somehow manage to strike the foil on something EXTREMELY SUBSTANTIAL, like a stone shoal, the likely outcome is that you may (in a very worst case scenario) bend or break a foil wing. If that were to happen, you could still operate the boat to port with the remaining foils. The IFC foils are made from a very high-grade stainless steel and designed to meet or exceed relevant guidelines for impact and strength.

As water travels through the tunnel and around the foil, a tremendous vortex is created. This force keeps most debris from being trapped in the tunnel or around the foil. Between the pressure of the air moving through the tunnel, and the vortex created in the water, the tunnel and foils will stay clean and clear.

The outboards of the 35 IFC are mounted on a slight outward angle to place the propellers properly to maximize the thrust and flow efficiency created as the water travels through the tunnel and around the foils. This mounting also helps the boat to lean into a corner, much like a monohull.

Firstly, we’d ask, “Why would you want to?” But the short answer is no. IFC is an integrated system that is integral to the design of the boat.

The short answer is that boats with technology similar to IFC have been in use for many years, but not in the recreational market. Commercial and Military applications are quite prevalent. The initial design of a hull and system like this is quite complex and can be cost prohibitive. We at Insetta feel the gains in efficiency, speed, range and ride quality far outweigh the initial design and build cost.

Upon deciding to build a foiling Cat, Insetta assembled a team of naval Architects and Marine Engineers to refine an existing and proven design. Using their own state of the art construction techniques, Insetta brought an application specific version to the fiberglass Center Console market.

Why did Insetta Boatworks decide to build a boat with IFC?

For decades, Hydrofoil power boats have proven to be the most efficient craft for a variety of offshore operations.

While pursuing a B.S. in physics in 1960, Victor Insetta was employed doing anti-submarine research that utilized high speed Deep-V patrol boats equipped with hydrofoils. Their ability to pursue submarines at high speed, operate safely offshore, and, being foil borne: allowed their hull to run clear of the water avoiding direct hits from torpedoes. Decades later, Vic and his family rode comfortably on hydrofoil ferries in Italy, flying over white capped waves in the bay of Naples.

In 2017, The Insetta 45 was chosen to be the official chase boat of the America’s cup! Four 45’ Insetta’s catamarans were shipped to Bermuda to assist at various cup events. Sailboats, competing from several countries, were catamarans with hydrofoils ! The Insetta 45’s ran parallel to these “foiling sail cats” to assist with TV coverage. The sailing cats were traveling at speeds approaching 50 mph, 2 ½ times the wind speed . Efficient … you bet . They could also turn on a dime at over 40 mph…

It became obvious: that a foiling cat would make a great offshore outboard power boat… Many foil power boat designs in the past, had wide foils that stuck out the sides, increasing their beam and draft. It made them difficult to dock, and they couldn’t operate in shallow waters. Joel Shine (chief operating officer) of Insetta Boatworks found a catamaran design that had hydrofoils mounted in the tunnel, (that location between the tunnel walls actually improves their efficiency), and does not add to its draft. Further improvements could be added by using our ultra-light high strength infused composite construction.

Joel, Vic and our technical staff reviewed the foiling cat’s initial specifications and performance data, and then sea trialed two foiling cats with internal hydrofoils. Our staff includes a second physicist and pilot… Glen Dobbs. We are all active boaters and we determined we would build our version of a foiling outboard powered cat. We contacted a Naval architect, who designed several successful foiling power cats . He is now a member of our technical staff.

Our 35 “foiling cat” design has set the standard for Foil-Assisted Sportfishing boats. The hull, foils, materials, and engines are synergistically combined, to provide: unrivaled high-speed cruising efficiency , and provide safe offshore handling, with unimpeded shallow water operation, including beaching, without foils or props contacting the bottom.

Mainly personal effects etc. If you have any questions or wish to arrange an inspection feel free to contact me to discuss.________________________________________________________________________________ In answer to the many of the questions posed to me here are a few more details:- I've owned the boat for two years. Initially it was purchased in Houston with big plans to sail the Caribbean but life unfortunately got in the way. During that time I've refit many of the items on the boat and this is outlined above.- Yes the boat can be viewed in Key West, Florida, USA. For those that are interested message me and I'll give you the contact details of my local Key West broker.- The boat is currently Australian registered but will be de-registered as part of the sale. So the new owner can get the boat re-registered with the USCG.- Yes the boat is capable of offshore voyages, but no I wouldn't jump in this tomorrow and sail across the Pacific. Not due to any structural fault in the boat. I would add better water storage, a water maker, fit the wind vane, purchase some spare sails, fit a full bimini cover etc. before committing to such a voyage. Of course you would want to have had a lot of experience offshore before crossing the North Atlantic.- More images of the boat and the trips we've taken can be found at www.formosa46.com- No I will not trade for another boat unless someone has a similar size/condition vessel in Australia.- Yes the price is negotiable within reason as are the sale terms. Please contact me to discuss.- The boat is very well equipped with all the safety gear you could ever hope for and is in a good condition.

2001 J46 sailboat sail boat J-46 sailing cruiser racing fresh water. UPGRADES!

Charlevoix, Michigan

Make J Boats

Length 46.0

Beautiful, generously equipped and meticulously cared for freshwater J46 owned by senior couple. Used only for day sailing and minimal light cruising in northern Lake Michigan, Lake Huron and Lake Charlevoix for only 12 four month seasons (was not launched in 2012 and 2013). Always kept in inside heated storage when not in the water for the four month summer season. It is in pristine condition. J/46 may be the only investment grade sailing yacht of its size not requiring professional crew to sail at designed performance levels…..or to maintain. Two people can easily manage her upwind and down to achieve the same 8 knot passage-making speeds under sail that is possible when motoring with 76hp diesel auxiliary. The joy of sailing the perfect boat is, after all, a goal we believe every owner ultimately seeks. To insure that good sailing days are spent sailing rather than scrubbing and varnishing, J/46 is designed to be virtually maintenance-free. Her exquisite joinerwork is protected from the sun……below decks where it’s beauty can be preserved More photos available in this link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1QEllizB6x4FKTe3kGwlbjYaLgJMrQEg8x6PdVtIa14Y/pub Factory Options: Refrigeration Package: -Seafrost Mechanical Refrigeration.-Additional Plates & controls for Freezer.-Supplementary 110VAC Shore power Assist. Helped by new materials and techniques, they evolve from the joint experiences of designer, builder and owners to become state-of-the-art. J/46 is such a vessel, inheriting the proven hull shape of the J/44, an offshore blue water classic, having won the Fastnet, Sydney-Hobart, NYYC Queen’s Cup and Trans-Atlantic races. J/44 is the only Class of yacht ever to be given its own class start by the Cruising Club of America in the Newport-Bermuda Race. To create the J/46, a foot of sailing length is added for speed; a transom swim/boarding platform for convenience; a carbon fiber mast and low VCG 6.2’ shoal draft keel for more stability; and a resin-infused, composite hull and deck for greater strength. Below decks, the choice was clear, use the same beautifully varnished cherry or teak joiner work, entertainment center and styling so highly acclaimed in our deluxe J/160. J/46 is a maxi-Ditch yacht, the tallest yacht that can fit under the bridges of the Intra-Coastal WWaterway. Yet she is non-intimidating. A high length-to-beam ratio on the waterline of this sea-kindly yacht significantly improves tracking offshore in large waves and makes sail plan balance less critical. J/46 sails with either main or jib only, always responding predictably to a light touch on the helm. Sail power with good stability allows cruising with working jib rather than large genoa. That’s less work for the crew and improved visibility for the person on the helm. J Boats’ unique spinnaker system makes downwind sailing possible for two. A modern asymmetric spinnaker attaches to the top of the anchor roller, is contained within a cockpit-controlled snuffer, and is stored, ready-to-use, in the bow locker. The spinnaker is hoisted to the masthead, 2’ above the headstay intersect, leaving space for the snuffer to shift on a jibe. Jibing is then easy. One simply lets off one spinnaker sheet and pulls in the other.

Model Legend

Length 37.5

Owned by a 50T Coast Guard Master Licensed Captain with sailing/towing endorsements. We're offering for sale our Legend 37 sailboat. She has around 500 hours on the Yanmar 3HM35F 34hp diesel. Injectors and injection pump have been rebuilt. New lift pump. ~450w of solar panels and a Xantrex 2000 inverter. Sails are two years old. 3 year old Hypalon dinghy on davits with 9.8hp Tohatsu outboard. Honda eu3000i generator. Cash only (no seller financing, etc). She is priced on the upper end of her class, but the others aren't necessarily turn-key. We'd be happy to take a serious buyer out for a daysail to experience how quick and smooth she runs. Our vessel is turn key after we have gone through everything over the years. We have owned her around 5 years and now have 10 footitis.Five year old bimini and dodger installed (along with targa fill piece) and replaced the standing rigging.September 2010 we replaced the steering chain, steering cable, throttle cable, and shift cable. In March 2011 we installed a new Mermaid M16 (16,500 BTU) reverse cycle heat and air unit with FX1 digital control system. We also hauled out in March 2011 for fresh bottom paint. SR60 by Petit was what we used. 3 coats overall and 4 along the waterline, leading and trailing edges. Paint is still in great condition according to our diver and will probably last another year or two with maintenance, but we'd be happy to repaint the bottom for a buyer after closing.August 2011 we purchased a Honda eu3000i electric start generator, which runs the a/c and all power as needed.November 2011 we installed a complete new Coldmachine refrigerator with a small freezer box. It is a large fridge area. November 2011 we rebuilt all of the winches and replaced any worn parts.February 2012 we replaced the head.May 2012 we installed 3 140w solar panels and a Xantrex SW2012 100amp charge/inverter with control panel.June 2012 installed 4 Klipsch outdoor speakers ($500/pair).August 2012 we replaced the two burner stove/broiler, with a new Force 10 two burner stove/oven and a new 17# fiberglass propane tank.September 2012 we replaced the mainsail with a new custom built sail and a new mainsail cover; we still have the repaired original that is usable, but not necessary with the new sail. We also rebuilt the injectors, injection pump, and replaced the lift pump, so the fuel system is in top shape.March 2013 we replaced the holding tank with a 20 gallon waste grade bag.August 2013 repainted the non-skid.September 2013 we replaced the headsail with a new one. We still have the old one, which is still usable. We still have the usable sail we removed. November 2013 we installed the R2D2 Raycor filter gauge.August 2014 replaced the wall carpet in the v-berth. We also had the a/c professionally serviced by the factory to keep it in top running condition. We have also touched up the non-skid in high wear areas.Manson Supreme anchor, which has held over 300k pounds of boat (rafter on a single hook) with friends who will back that up. We have 120 feet of chain and 250 feet of line for a 370 foot total rode.Wifi boost antenna and router which enhances wifi reliability on the boat tremendously. She has well supported davits holding a 2011 RIB and 2012 9.8 4-stroke outboard. She also has a spinnaker with sock.6 Group 29 batteries with nearly 700aH of capacity. With the solar, you can stay out for days without charging.

1983 J Boat J/35 The American Sailboat Hall of Fame is a very select group of boats that merit special consideration. The J35 happens to be in that select group and for good reason. Combining both the attributes of speed and of comfort, the J is perfect for not only race time, but post-race relaxing as well. Six foot standing headroom, ample beam, stove, built-in icebox, galley sink and berths for 6 are just a few examples of this.  Hot Ticket has had some big ticket upgrades - newer Hall Spars mast, rudder bearings, and like new Dacron sails. But at the same time, she could use some TLC. She has a fuel tank leak and is thus priced to reflect this. Come join the Great Lakes level 35 class with one design starts for such events as the Chicago to Mackinac race or get to your favorite cruising ground before everyone else. Do you know your numbers when it comes to sizing up your boat? Accurate measurements for figures like length, draft, beam and clearance will keep your boat free from damage in marinas and private boat dock slips as well as while traveling beneath fixed bridges.

Boat length is measured from the bow to the stern. However, the number is not as set in stone as it may seem. It can vary depending on whether there’s a swim platform, a bow pulpit, a dinghy on a davit or other things that contribute to the length overall (LOA). Knowing the correct length of your boat is just as important as knowing how to properly operate it. We’re not talking about that number the manufacturer says it is … the one that’s part of the model name. For example, a Hatteras GT45X is 45 feet long, but with a swim platform and a bow pulpit, it could technically come closer to a total of 47.5 feet. This number can change from boat to boat (even among the same model and manufacturer) as well as type of boat. Correct length is especially useful when docking or choosing a private boat dock rental. Trying to fit a boat into a slip that’s too small can result in damage to the boat, the dock and other property around it.

Example Average Length

  • Cruising Sailboat: 16’ – 50’
  • Catamaran: 32’ – 47’
  • Cabin Cruiser: 25’ – 45’
  • Motor Yacht: 29’- 65’
  • Center Console: 18’ – 32’

Another important factor is draft. A boat’s draft refers to the vertical distance from the waterline (where the hull touches the water) to the bottom of the hull, or keel on a sailboat. It determines the minimum depth of water a boat can safely navigate without running ashore (which, by the way, is very bad). Put simply, it helps you know how deep the water needs to be. Like length, it can vary from boat to boat. A sailboat can have a very large draft based on whether it has a keel (and whether the keel is removable). Each dock has its own specific draft allowance, which is based on things like water level, tides and how flat or angled the ground is under the water. One dock can be vastly different than others in the area. Dock draft measurements can be taken by dropping a long length of rope (weighted) or chain into the water, marking it at the water level and then measuring from the bottom up out of the water. Private docks on our site are listed at the low tide water level. This way, you know the absolute minimum depth of water. It’s always best to be conservative by one or two feet if you’re not completely sure you’ll be able to dock at that boat slip – due to things like changing tides, weather and boat wakes.

Boat Size vs Draft

  • Low Draft: A boat 32 feet long and under needs 3 feet or less of water
  • Medium Draft: A boat 45 to 65 feet long needs 4 to 5 feet of water
  • High Draft: A boat 65 feet long or greater needs 5 to 7.5 feet of water

To throw a wrench into these statistics, there are instances where this might vary. Sailboats can be an exception as they may have a non-retractable keel, which gives them the need for a larger draft (since the keep gives them a bigger draft measurement). On the other hand, since catamarans are wide and displace water very efficiently, they may only need 4.5 feet of draft even if it falls into a bigger category.

Average Boat Draft

  • Cruising Sailboat: 5’ (but could be more if it has a non-retractable keel)
  • Catamaran: 2’ – 4’(large cats could need more)
  • Cabin Cruiser: 3’
  • Motor Yacht: 4’ (the bigger the yacht, the bigger the draft)
  • Center Console: 2’

As a general rule, the bigger the boat is, the deeper the draft will need to be. Factors like weight and beam play into this concept. The hull shape can also play a part. A flat or multi-hull boat (like pontoon boats, jet skis and dinghies) has a low draft. A deep V-shaped displacement hull (like most power boats and cruisers) allows the boat to sit deeper in the water, resulting in a high draft.

Beam refers to the distance from the widest point of the boat to the other side (think: middle of the boat from side to side). Catamarans are very wide compared to that of center consoles and cabin cruisers. Most boats fall into the 18 to 20-foot beam category, but cats can be as wide as 22 to 30 feet.

The beam of a boat will determine how wide of a boat slip rental you need. You’ll want to measure the dock to make sure it’s wide enough that your boat won’t bang against the sides.

Average Beam

  • Cruising Sailboat: 12’
  • Catamaran: 22’ to 30’
  • Cabin Cruiser: 8.5’
  • Motor Yacht: 13’
  • Center Console: 9’

Clearance, or vertical clearance, is important for sailboats and catamarans with a fixed mast, as well as sportfish boats with tall towers. It refers to the height of the boat from the waterline to the top of the mast or flybridge (or any non-removable part). Some masts can be lowered, so that would not be included in your clearance number.

Out in the wide-open ocean, clearance isn’t too much of an issue. The time it becomes an issue is when you’re sailing under a fixed bridge. A drawbridge is no problem. You just need the patience to wait till it opens. Sailboats can require anywhere from 35 to 75 feet of vertical clearance, so you’ll want to check out those fixed bridge heights when charting your course or choosing a boat dock for rent. Be sure to take into account low tide when determining clearance.

Average Boat Clearance

  • Cruising Sailboat: 50’
  • Catamaran: 39’
  • Express Cabin Cruiser:  9’ 10 “ with tower up / 7’ 7” with tower down
  • Motor Yacht: 14’ to 15’
  • Center Console: 9’ 6”

Whether you’re docking your boat at a marina, a mooring or a private boat dock rental, the correct measurements play a big factor. Hopefully this has given you some good advice to make the whole docking process a bit easier. Now if you could just control the wind while docking.

All aboard S.S. Facebook.

Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly gifted himself a $300 million megayacht, dubbed “Launchpad,” ahead of his 40th birthday.

The staggering 387-foot-long vessel was seen floating at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., after arriving at its berth earlier this week, The Sun reported Thursday.

Mark Zuckerberg.

The multi-layered luxury ship’s sleek exterior was designed by Espen Øino International and boasts a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure, according to SuperYacht Times.

Reportedly ranking as the 45th largest yacht in the world, the interiors are just as aesthetically pleasing and reportedly executed by Zuretti Interior Design company, a France-based company specializing in unique and custom yacht design.

The breathtakingly beautiful floater stands out with a navy blue theme matching an American flag perched proudly on its wood-paneled stern.

There are several outdoor areas where the social media maven will be able to relax with his family and the indoor levels feature glass paneling allowing for tons of natural light.

There also appears to be a helipad perfect for whenever the Facebook co-founder wants to travel to his vessel by air.

The Feadship-built yacht, built in 2022, can comfortably fit 24 guests aboard, requires a crew of 48, and is said to cost $30 million a year for upkeep and usage, according to Superyachtfan.com .

Boatworld insiders have been buzzing with speculation that Zuckerberg is the owner of the newly minted mega-cruise ever since it made its main voyage from the Netherlands last week.

The tech titan was spotted touring the Russian-commissioned megayacht in early March, though the impressive boat didn’t arrive stateside until this week due to sanctions, according to The Sun.

The website reported that Zuckerberg purchased the pricey yacht – along with its own $30 million partner boat — most likely as an early 40th birthday present to himself.

The boat reportedly traveled to Florida after being granted special permission to be imported just weeks ahead of Zuckerberg’s birthday on May 14.

Zuckerberg’s yacht is just 30 feet shorter than the length of fellow billionaire Jeff Bezos’ 417-foot megayacht Koru, which the Amazon boss snagged for a whopping $500 million.

Zuckerberg’s rep did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.

atlante yachts classic yacht mengi yay shipyard

Hull turned on Atlante Yachts' first 35m explorer yacht

Construction is officially underway on Atlante Yachts' 34.5-metre explorer series, the Atlante Classic 35. The first unit has had its hull turned at Mengi Yay 's shipyard in Tuzla, Turkey.

Commissioned by an "experienced Northern European client", the yacht is scheduled for delivery in spring 2025.

The Atlante Classic 35 is a modern interpretation of the full displacement explorer yacht, with Atlante Yachts committed to an all-Italian design. Exterior and interior design is therefore owed to VYD Studio , while naval architecture will be completed by Arrabito Naval Architects .

Accommodation is across five en suite cabins. Interior renderings reveal a fresh, contemporary style with floor-to-ceiling windows, light-wood wall panelling and a gentle colour palette of blues and greys. The design was developed with extensive input from the owners, including the choice of high-quality Italian materials and fabrics.

Leisure highlights include a beach club with an unfolding transom and ample entertainment areas across its three decks. The hardtop sundeck is the main communal area, fitted with fixed sunpads, an al fresco dining area with U-shaped sofa seating and a dry bar.

"With the layout of the Atlante Classic 35 we have aimed to achieve a perfect equilibrium within the parameters of length, beam and within a very high volume of 330GT usually only available in vessels several metres longer," said Paolo Dose of VYD Studio. "This allows a harmonious balance between accommodation, living, exterior and technical areas."

Powered by twin Volvo Penta engines, the Atlante Classic 35 will have a cruising speed of 11 knots and a range in excess of 5,000 nautical miles.

According to BOATPro , Mengi Yay has seven other hulls currently under construction. This includes the first two hulls in its "go anywhere" explorer series Virtus XP, both scheduled for delivery in 2025.

  • Open Space, Eco-Friendly Tech: What a Rising Class of Millennial Superyacht Owners Is Looking For

Surveys predict that, 10 years from now, the average age of a superyacht buyer will be 35 to 40.

Millennials Are Buying Yachts

Ten years from now, Millennials will have taken over the superyacht world. At least that’s the forecast by several experts who are seeing ages of yacht buyers trending younger.

That trend is expected to continue, according to research from Italian yacht builder Rossinavi and the University of Monaco, with the average age of superyacht buyers decreasing 10 to 15 years over the next decade. That could make Millennials the primary buyers of superyachts.

The topic of younger buyers is a constant discussion in shipyard boardrooms and among designers looking to modify their designs to this changing market. It was also one of the topics at the recent Yachtmaster event in Key West, hosted by Benetti Yachts. Benetti sponsors Yachtmaster events twice a year (the European edition was in Budapest last month) to brief captains and other professionals on new trends in the superyacht industry.

Benetti Yachtmasters 2024

“We have been doing this event for 24 years now,” Benetti Americas manager Nick Bischoff told Robb Report . “The intent is to continue to build relationships with influencers of our current and prospective owners. In the beginning that meant mostly captains, but it’s expanded to include surveyors and owners’ reps, too.” The ultimate goal, says Bischoff, is for participants not only to network, but “put their heads together to create an ever-improving onboard experience both for owners and crew.”

Many seminars focused on the concept of onboard lifestyle, which most brokers and shipyards see as a primary driver for purchasing a yacht. Benetti’s head of product, Sebastiano Vida, also spoke about how lifestyle influences new designs in the yachts.

But Jason Dunbar, a broker and appraisal surveyor with Vessel Value Survey, recommended tough love to the brokers. His discussion about managing expectations for newbie owners included advice about being “realistic” with owners who are flush with cash, but might be new to the superyacht world. If an owner wants a brand-new 120-footer with a crew of six, but has a budget of $8 million, the broker is the one who needs to break the bad news. “A good broker has to tell people ‘Listen, that’s just not going to happen,’” says Dunbar. “That will save a lot of headaches down the road and will hopefully keep a client in boating for the long term.”

Benetti Yachtmaster Even Oasis Deck

A new buyer is often coming off a one-week charter that was magical: perfect weather, a well-oiled boat, and a crew looking forward to a little R&R after hustling all week for the charter guests. “It’s relatively easy to make things work like that one week at a time,” says Dunbar. “But a new owner who wants to use their boat for 10, 15, or 30 weeks, that’s a totally different thing. You may have to tell them they need to hire two crews and rotate them—which will be news to them.” He said that overworking the crew will “burn through humans.” The crew will be miserable, he says, which will make the boat not live up to the owners’ expectations. “The next thing you know these new owners will be long gone from yachting.”

Fraser Yachts CEO Anders Kurtén sees the new buyers as a boon for design creativity in an old-school industry. “It starts with a piece of paper,” he says. “We sit down and start designing these boats for younger clients and we see similar trends. Basically they all want to live their shore-based lives on a yacht.”

The segmented and often claustrophobic interiors of many current superyacht designs, says Dirand, just doesn’t float with the new generation. “Young owners’ preferences are honed by hospitality and a knowledge of architectural trends,” he says.

Azimut Benetti Group

Because of that, wellness centers have become focal points of design. As moguls like Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg have made clear as of late, having six-pack abs in middle age is the new Lamborghini. These new owners expect their boats to be designed with beach clubs with gyms, saunas, massage areas that allow owners and guests to work out or relax, amidst warm sun rays and luscious sea breezes.

Kurtén also pointed to green tech as key for the new generation of clients. “We’ve hit a point where a 150-foot sailboat can go across the Atlantic without burning a drop of fuel. And motoryachts can function on battery-only mode, at least when they are close to port,” he says. “That’s important to these new clients—they want to be green. A few years ago that was something you said at a cocktail party, but today it’s a reality for a lot of buyers.”

Peter Selivanoff, senior yacht service manager for Fraser, also spoke about how owners are seeking highly specialized crews who can perform multiple functions across the yacht.

Navigating these new realities is an important part for the industry to future-proof itself in the competitive realm of ultra-luxury products. This is a place where youth may not spring eternal but, at least for now, it reigns supreme.

Mark Zuckerberg’s $300million ‘birthday present’ mega yacht arrives in US – it even has its own $30m ‘wingman’ boat

FACEBOOK founder Mark Zuckerberg has shown off his wealth at sea, bringing his multimillion-dollar yacht to the United States just weeks before his birthday.

After rumors the billionaire was looking to invest in a yacht began circulating, Zuckerberg was quick to snag a $300 million mega yacht complete with its own $30 million partner boat.

Mark Zuckerberg's $300 million mega yacht arrived in port just weeks before the billionaire's 40th birthday

He was seen in the Netherlands touring Project 1010, a Russian-commissioned mega yacht, in early March.

Due to sanctions involved in importing the vessel to the United States, delivery of Zuckerberg's multimillion-dollar boat was delayed.

It was first spotted in home waters on March 20.

The 387-foot-long vessel docked at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with its chrome finish reflecting a harsh sun.

Project 1010 made its maiden voyage from the Netherlands after receiving special permission to be imported just weeks ahead of Zuckerberg's birthday, which is on May 14, raising questions about whether it could be a gift to mark the occasion.

The mega vessel is not far off the size of Amazon mogul Jeff Bezos' $500 million 417-foot tall mega yacht, Koru, which was spotted in the same state in November 2023.

The Abeona, his mega yacht's support vessel, a 264-foot garage to hold Bezos' luxury cars, private helicopter, and jet skis, was docked at a slip four miles away.

To put into perspective the additional costs Zuckerberg is looking at, Bezos reportedly bankrolled a $16,500 per week bill for Koru to stay at the port, part of the $25 million in annual costs the ship will rack up.

But cost is no object to 39-year-old Zuckerberg, as he was the youngest billionaire to make the top 10 wealthiest people in the world list.

In 2021, Zuckerberg was reportedly worth $108 billion, an amount that rose to $138.4 billion by January 2024.

Zuckerberg is hardly known for conserving his money when faced with large purchases.

In December 2021, it was reported that Zuckerberg was breaking ground on an estimated $270 million, 57,000-square-foot Doomsday bunker.

Plans for the structure include filling the football field-sized space with 30 bedrooms, elevators, a swimming pool, sauna, tennis court, and full-sized gym.

EARNING $48,328 - MINUTE BY MINUTE

While a $330 million purchase might sound outlandish to most, especially when coupled with a $270 million bunker, Zuckerberg can make that money back in about two months.

The Meta, formerly Facebook, founder reportedly makes between $6 million and $12 million each day, equating to an estimated yearly earning of more than $3 billion.

In 2018, Zuckerberg earned roughly $1.7 million an hour, according to previous Business Insider calculations.

By 2020, he ranked as the fourth richest person on the planet.

Breaking News

Florida news | rep. carolina amesty notarized document that teacher says he never signed | special report, florida news, florida news | go inside research boat that studies florida’s overheated corals.

The Coral Reef II is docked in Miami on March 13, 2024. The research team left that morning for Key Largo.(Tampa Bay Times)

While you might first notice the glossy super yachts or a fishing trawler on the Miami River, there’s also an 80-foot vessel packed not with partiers, but scientists, trying to protect the coral offshore.

Bridget Coughlin, the CEO of the Chicago-based Shedd Aquarium, said their research vessel named the Coral Reef II is docked in Miami because of the diversity of marine life in the area.

“We teach climate change through empathy with animals,” said Coughlin. “If you talk about how otters are starving, that empathy for that otter is going to catalyze you to act.”

The vessel can go out to sea for three weeks at a time and can travel as far south as the Dominican Republic. The researchers study a plethora of animals including queen conch, endangered rock iguanas, sharks and climate change’s impact on the coral reef. From March through October, the crew often works days that stretch from 7 a.m. to midnight.

How to come aboard the research vessel

The Coral Reef II also acts as a live-in laboratory for aspiring marine biologists. High school and college students can go on a weeks-long journey that includes snorkeling in crystal-clear water with Caribbean reef sharks and working side-by-side with scientists. Chuck Knapp, a 30-year employee of Shedd and the head of conservation on the vessel, said he got his start that way.

Rep. Carolina Amesty notarized document that teacher says he never signed

“I was originally a high school marine biology student back on the boat as a 17-year-old in the late ‘80s so it’s been a thrill of a lifetime to come back,” Knapp, who gave a tour of the vessel in the video said.

This summer, high schoolers will be taking a trip to the Bahamas to learn about how to protect dolphins, snorkel shipwrecks and observe firsthand from Shedd’s shark research biologist.

Conducting research on coral reefs bleaching

One of the most unique parts of the vessel is its live well system, which consists of large built-in tanks at the front of the boat filled with seawater.

These mini aquariums are a safe harbor for wildlife that scientists are trying to study or move. The live well system makes it easy to scoop marine life like coral up, perform heat stress tests and return them back to sea in hours.

Ross Cunning, a coral biologist with Shedd, said researchers can use technology onboard to test how well the coral absorbs sunlight and observe what temperature and speed cause corals to bleach.

Mark Schick, the senior director of animal operations on the Coral Reef II research vessel owned by Shedd aquarium, dumps water overboard. (Tampa Bay Times)

Even two corals of the same species might bleach at different speeds, and they’re looking for the most heat tolerant coral, Cunning said.

Last summer he worked alongside South Florida research groups, like the University of Miami, the Coral Restoration Foundation, and Reef Renewal to test snippets of these baby corals in nurseries that have been growing in higher water temperatures.

“Finding interventions to boost the heat tolerance in coral reefs is more important than ever,” Cunning said. “But the most critical thing we need to do is stop climate change.

“All the research in the world will not boost coral heat tolerance enough to cope with oceans that continue warming. We must stop the root of the problem and stop greenhouse gas emissions as quickly as possible.”

For instance, some may not agree that a 40-foot boat is a yacht. Others might say that 35-feet is the bare minimum, while others might say it must be 50-feet or more.
