In Conversation With: Guido Orsi, Tankoa Yachts

In January, Northrop & Johnson visited Genoa-based Tankoa Yachts , where we sat down with Guido Orsi, Marketing & Communications Manager and son of the major shareholder of Tankoa Yachts, to discuss Italian shipbuilding, industry trends and the future of the Tankoa brand.

For Guido Orsi, yachting is in the blood. As the son of a passionate yacht owner, the family business began with his father’s luxury Codecasa motor yacht—the vessel that sparked a business interest before it enflamed a legacy. His father bought and sold Baglietto before he founded Genoa-based Tankoa Yachts, a boutique shipyard specializing in custom builds characterized by highly detailed Italian craftsmanship.

Today, Guido is one of the owners of the yard, and having been raised within the yachting industry, is uniquely positioned to guide boutique Italian shipbuilding to new heights of luxury. He sat down with Northrop & Johnson to discuss Italian shipbuilding, industry trends and the future of the Tankoa brand.

N&J: Tell us about the early years of Tankoa.

Guido: Tankoa actually began with my father. He owned a yacht himself and in 1996, he acquired Baglietto from a friend of his. We owned Baglietto for about 10 years and sold it in 2004—he received an offer he couldn’t refuse.

But he still had this interest in yachting and wanted to continue working in the business. So, along with a good friend of his—who eventually became a shareholder—he decided to build a new yacht but the [building] sheds that were available at the time, weren’t designed to handle longer yachts.

At Baglietto, the boats built had, let’s say, a maximum range of 170’ (52m) but the main range was between 98’ (30m) and 131’ (40m). But at the beginning of the 2000s, we could see a trend: boats were getting longer and longer. So, at Tankoa, we were obliged to build new sheds.

First, we took time to decide where to build the sheds. We wanted to keep the business in northern Italy because we like to follow things personally, so distance was one of the main factors in determining the location. We liked Liguria and Tuscany because it’s a region of historical importance to the yachting industry; it has some 400 years of important maritime history.

In the end, we decided to build in Liguria because they saw this location. It was a good opportunity. We began with the two sheds we’re using now. Inside these two sheds, we can build 262’ (80m) to 278’ (85m) maximum length. We can build even longer here—you only need to create a longer shed. But so far, our biggest yacht, SOLO , is 266’ (72m).

At the beginning, we did not have a particularly good time. As soon as we began, many things happened, like the financial crisis. But the biggest impact on us was the death of my father’s best friend, the one whom we named the yard after. But still, we were focused, and we had a strong desire to continue this project. And so far, so good!

N&J: Does the name ‘Tankoa’ mean anything?

Guido: Actually, the name comes from the Genoese dialect word for scorpion, ‘ tancua .’ My father’s best friend and a major company shareholder was a Scorpio. He died in the early years of our company. It’s a nice way to remember him.

You can see the scorpion in our logo. From the front, it’s the hull of a yacht, but the way the line curves is like the tail of a scorpion.

N&J: How has the brand changed over the years?

Guido: The brand is in a constant state of evolution. In 2013, when we sold SUERTE , one of the first yachts we ever built, we decided to give the brand a fresh new look after the rough start we’d had. We wanted to change completely. This year is 2023, ten years since our last brand makeover. I think we will change again with a totally new feel. I really enjoy this sort of creative work and seeing how other shipyards take care of this matter.

But, being a boutique shipyard, there are some core things that will always remain the same. We are a serious shipyard. We do not promise anything that we cannot afford to give the client. We follow the work personally and we make sure that every yacht we deliver is a yacht that is going to make the customer satisfied. We let our work speak for itself.

N&J: Is that what makes Tankoa stand out from other shipyards?

Yes, I believe so. Initially, we said we always wanted to be in a position where people feel as if they are going to a German or Dutch yacht builder but with a creative side that only Italians can have. It’s in our DNA.

Another important point of differentiation is that whenever a customer feels that they want to change something in their project, even if it’s in an important stage of development, they can still do it. We are flexible. I feel that one problem in other shipyards is that, when the project has begun, they aren’t willing to change anything about it without great cost to the client. So, we always like to give this chance to them.

Nowadays, we feel that our main point of difference is that when we give time, dates, costs: that’s it. That is our word, and we can maintain it. Because we are a boutique shipyard, we aim to deliver four to five yachts a year. That gives us the opportunity to follow the clients and the projects directly. They don’t just become a number in a company. It’s a personal touch. A nice relationship, more informal.

N&J: How do you feel Italian shipyards differentiate themselves from the rest of the world?

Italy is a top yacht producer. We are a peninsula, so three-quarters of our country touches the sea. I think, historically, this is why we have so many shipyards. I think we’re also seen as creative. We always have to give something new to the customer, and this is our main strong point, that we can always present new projects to the client, new improvements, and we concentrate on quality. That’s probably why we’re seen as one of the leading yacht builders.

N&J: Can you explain the craftsmanship side of the build process? How do you ensure quality in your builds?

Everything that our designer presents to the client is custom made. So, whenever they see a render, the mood, the internal layout, the external layout, it’s all custom made. Nothing is made in series or in bulk. Even when we speak about, let’s say, the S 501 model—which is our 164’ (50m), of which we have delivered five and are building a sixth—everything is made to order, and everything changes. It may be a series hull and superstructure, but everything else changes totally, from the engine room to the layout of the internal GA, balconies and exteriors. We build everything from scratch.

N&J: Have the demands of your clients changed over the years?

I’d say they’re more interested in hi-fi entertainment, maintenance of the boat, and the propulsion and electrical side of the boat. This is where technology moves quickest. For example, nowadays, clients want fast, continuous wi-fi because plenty of them work while they’re cruising. For example, Cisco solutions with Starlink.

On the other hand, if they are clients that are more traditional and want a more traditional look design-wise, they are often after sophistication with modern design—more straight lines, leather. So, it depends. We have designers who are able to present whatever the client wants.

N&J: How have your clients changed over time?

The age of our clients is going down. There’s a range now between 40 and 60, which is quite interesting. There’s a strong American market and America has younger customers, mainly due to big tech. We still have a strong market in the 50 to 70 age range.

Our younger clients typically have never had a yacht before and many start with a 164’ (50m). That’s quite unusual, and they still need to be guided through the project. But the older the client is, the more likely to know everything, and they’re pretty settled. They usually like to make or stick to the design they like.

That’s the main difference. New clients have to be guided. I see that they often like particular things in their yacht, like hi-fi entertainment.

Another big area is sustainability. We’ve just built a hybrid, the motor yacht KINDA. We’re still looking at hybrid solutions because when you say ‘hybrid,’ it’s a complicated word. It can mean everything, and it can mean nothing. I think there’s still a lot to do here. And technology moves so fast, and there’s plenty we could see in the future. At the moment, we have to deal with little things. Solar panels, for example. You see solar panels, but they cannot deal with the maintenance of the whole yacht, like the lighting. They are still insufficient in what they can give.

Another example is hydrogen. Why not build yachts with hydrogen propulsion? Well, we need a big container and it’s still dangerous. It’s probably the most interesting side of fuel, but it’s still like a target we have to reach. Let’s see.

N&J: Where do you see the future of Tankoa?

We plan a time factor of three years. So, in about 2026, we’ll have new sheds. We’re expanding now. We’re growing from 20 to 30 employees to 60 to 70 employees. We’re still hiring, and I think we’ll end up with around 85 to 100 employees.

Our best plan is to have sheds where we are now. But we also have plan B and a plan C. This will occupy us for the next three years, to build new sites. So far, there are two big sheds, but they’re flexible. We will have a total of five sheds, including the two we have here, where we can build two smaller yachts.

So far, we have a 147’ (45m) entry level but in the future, we want to give an entry-level of 131’ (40m). We’ve acquired 3,000 square meters of sheds. We currently have carpentry and painting where we can build our own custom things, but we were thinking about producing other things for ourselves, like swimming pools. These days, yachts can have two to three pools each. We are watching the market and we have to follow it.

So far, so good!

Tankoa delivers 50m s501 superyacht grey.

The 49.99-metre motor yacht GREY has been delivered by the Tankoa shipyard in Genoa, Italy, as the latest unit in the yard’s S501 series. The owner signed the new-build contract in July 2021 and appointed TWW Yachts as project managers. GREY will be used privately after her owner takes delivery on 12May 2023.

Despite being part of the Tankoa S501 series, GREY is substantially different from her sisterships and the three-deck layout, devised by exterior designer Francesco Paszkowski, was heavily customised to meet her owners’ needs.

In addition to the standard features that come with the timeless Tankoa S501 series design, the owner added a spectacular outdoor home cinema screen. This high-definition and high-luminosity screen is located in front of the swimming pool lounge on the foredeck. GREY is also fitted with a top-of-the-range sound system designed by the award-winning French/British brand Focal & Naim has been fitted throughout the yacht.

The owner also gave attention to the design of the exterior decks and the four open lounging and entertainment spaces available. With alfresco living a key element of her design, GREY features a large Jacuzzi on the fly deck alongside seating and lounging areas as well as a pool on the foredeck.

TWW Yachts supported the owner throughout the entire build process from the initial specification reviews to delivery. “We are particularly proud of GREY, and she has been designed and built for the most charming and passionate owners that a yacht broker and project managers can only dream of representing in a new-build project,” says lead broker at TWW Yachts, Jean-Claude Carme.

Giorgio Cassetta worked closely with the owner to create a luxurious and sophisticated interior. Together they created a warm and inviting look and feel, making great use of an array of natural materials, such as rich woods and veined marbles. The interior also benefits from enlarged windows on the main deck, glass bulwarks and fold-out balconies to heighten the all-important indoor-outdoor connection.

“This interior is one of the finest I have ever seen on any yacht of this size,” adds David Westwood, principal partner of TWW Yachts. The six suites onboard GREY – including two customised suites on the main deck – can accommodate up to 12 overnight guests. There is also space for up to nine crew.

“Our usual flexibility in satisfying customer requests is evident in the customisations made to GREY – such as the installation of a swimming pool in the bow, and the fantastic and never seen before cinema / sound system fitted just in front of the pool. The jet black and whisper grey paint gives a sleek look to GREY,” says Giuseppe Mazza, Tankoa sales and marketing manager.

The Tankoa S501 series sits at 499GT and has a “light alloy 5083” aluminium hull and superstructure. She will soon join sisterships VERTIGE, BINTADOR, KINDA and OLOKUN at sea. The owner opted for the conventional propulsion package offered by Tankoa, which will deliver a top speed of 18 knots if using both the main diesel engines for propulsion and one diesel generator for the hotel load.

A Detailed Look at Tankoa Yachts Built Suerte 69m Superyacht

Tankoa Yachts officially presented its superyacht Suerte at the Monaco Yacht Show in 2015. She was built in 2015 by Tankoa Yachts of Genoa, Italy and is the very first delivery made by Tankoa as a company, though the principal designers have more than 40 years of collective experience with shipbuilding. She achieved perfect balance at her first launch, and this is said to happened only once in every forty new launches. Tankoa engineers achieved an impressive technical achievement.

Her interior features the design talents of Margherita Casprini and Francesco Paszkowski. Paszkowski created her exterior styling as well. Renowned Professor Vincenzo Ruggiero designed her naval architecture. She was commissioned by a Russian client who requested that there be separate passageways for the guests and the crew throughout the yacht. The social spaces are generous, and the private areas are very much so.

Designed for Luxury and Enjoyment

What makes Suerte different from other mega yachts designed for charter, is that she is more than equivalent to first class hotels, and it is her interior styling and architecture which set her apart from the rest. Suerte has two entries that welcome guests directly into a lounge which receives them with a complete bar, and direct access to the beach club via a central staircase. From the moment guests arrive, they are offered refreshment and relaxation.

Located forward, is the saloon, which is as comfortable as any family room. There is a centrally located 4K TV situated directly across from a wide and cozy arrangement of sofa and lounge chairs. The custom mounted fish tank in the forward bulkhead is something to see.

Suerte, means “luck” in the Spanish language. She is a beautiful motor yacht designed for beauty and pleasure. Her interior is modern, minimalistic and sleek. Featuring a color palette of gold, bronze, whites and natural teak wall paneling, oak, black slate, leather, lacquered surfaces and textural variety, she provides plenty of comfortable spaces designed for socializing and relaxation. The main salon includes a library and a cozy sofa.

The dining room features a 900-liter aquarium, floor to ceiling windows and a wine collection which exceeds expectations by showcasing the owner’s favorite bottles. A stunning, contemporary metallic lighting fixture brings generous light over the shimmering metallic oval dining table.

The upper deck includes a sushi bar, which allows Suerte’s chef free culinary range. This area opens to the aft lounge area, which is also convertible to a stateroom by simply sliding a few walls.

The vessel is built over three decks which are spacious. A spa situated at sea level, the beach club, and swimming pool and sundeck terrace are all areas where guests can spend time and enjoy company.

A Modern Interpretation of Italian Shipbuilding Tradition

Tankoa Yachts shipyard is situated in Genoa Sestri Ponente, which is the heart of Italian navigation tradition. Positioned in this strategic location in the Mediterranean Sea provides the company with perfect access to prime global waterways. The shipyard has a large quay for mooring bigger vessels. The quay is 20 meters wide and more than 250 meters long, with 11,000 meters of maneuvering area and an additional 15,000 meters for berth. Extra mooring at the quay’s end is provided for 8 to 10 smaller boats of medium size. Ship building sheds include two production areas enhanced by climate control, each of which are 18 meters high, 90 meters long, and 20 meters wide. The cement structure contains a total square meters of 3,600, facilitated by an operational area. The modern head office is a five story building which houses the administration, commercial, technical and executive management offices.

Tankoa sees its projects as the opportunity to work closely with their clients’ hopes and dreams, providing a high level of customization by including the elements the yacht Owner finds perfect. It is a dream-seeking and idea sharing process which has involved the collaborative skills of Francesco Paszkowski’s Design Studio for twenty years. The two entities merge talents to provide a homogeneous and cohesive architecture throughout the exterior and interior yacht areas.

Tankoa believes that what distinguishes their realization of client’s dreams for the perfect yacht is based on their expertise developed through many years working within the fine traditional craftsmanship of Italian shipbuilders. Answering every wish question with excellence is their goal. They view interpreting dreams as fine art.

Tankoa views its ability to provide a high quality of sailing life is directly linked to their use of technological advances which sensibly use innovative, and hidden, solutions for keeping the working components of their mega yachts out of sight and quiet. Electromagnetic pollution protection is provided by the perfectly automated systems employed in their vanguard designs.

All Tankoa yachts use the latest technologies for insulation, making for a quiet sail, with noise and vibration reduced to their minimums. All of their vessels are tested at the Schiffbautechnische Versuchsanstalt LTD wind tunnel located in Vienna, which ensures proper engine exhaust flow. Tankoa yachts are also have Lloyd’s, RINA and M.C.A. surveys and certifications. They are Green Plus, following the most recent regulations for Maritime Pollution Prevention. The company’s development and research teams invest in safety, well-being and power quality on board their vessels.

The Suerta is now available for charter. She will sail routes in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean Seas. Her class registry is RINA-Italian Naval Registry. Her flag of registry is Malta.

The owner gave quite a bit of attention to the exterior decks, in fact. Grey offers four outdoor areas to facilitate sunning, lounging, and entertaining. There’s another spot for soaking, too, with a large Jacuzzi occupying pride of place on the fly deck.

The interior is nothing to sneeze at, either. Giorgio Maria Cassetta worked closely with the owner to create “warm and inviting” living quarters that are replete with a range of natural materials, such as rich woods and veined marbles.

“This interior is one of the finest I have ever seen on any yacht of this size,” added David Westwood, principal partner of TWW Yachts, who managed the project.

Of course, the layout is geared toward alfresco living. Expansive windows on the main deck, glass bulwarks, and fold-out balconies together create that integral indoor-outdoor connection. As for accommodation, Grey sports six suites for up to 12 guests and space for up to nine crew. The two large suites on the main deck were tailored to her owner’s tastes.

Tankoa delivered the first S501 Vertige back in 2017. Grey was started on speculation and sold to her owner in 2021. She was delivered by the Italian yard in early May and has since been cruising the world’s oceans. Wonder what’s on the TV.

Six of the coolest features on board Tankoa's recently-sold Grey

The new 49.8-metre motor yacht Grey has been sold with Jean-Claude Carme of TWW Yachts representing the seller and the buying broker wishing to remain anonymous. Her new name is expected to be Jimmy . She had a last known asking price of €36,500,000 and was offered for sale in a near-new state, having been delivered in 2023. She is an S501 model with sisterships including Kinda and Olokun . 

Her Francesco Paszkowski exterior sports a "whisper grey" hull and a "jet black" superstructure, earning her a place as a finalist in the Outstanding Exterior Design category in the BOAT Design & Innovation Awards 2024. Grey 's interior styling was completed by Giorgio Cassetta .

1. The forward pool with "magic seats"

One key departure from Grey 's sisterships is the foredeck, which features a larger-than-usual glass-sided swimming pool. It is located in the bow and is flanked by what TWW describes as "magic seats" and lounge seating. 2. The outdoor home cinema screen worth around $ 298,000 

 Her 144' C-seed outdoor cinema is capable of completely retracting and folding away and is estimated to be worth around $233,000 . Integrated speakers are placed around the pool for a supreme audio experience - the broker commented that the "incredible sound system" by the French-British brand Focal/Naim is "not something you encounter very often" and is fitted throughout the vessel. 

3. The sundeck Jacuzzi with one of the largest single pieces of black agate found on any yacht

A particular highlight is the large Jacuzzi located on the sundeck, offering unobstructed sea views and shade from the midday sun thanks to the awning. There is ample lounging space and sunpads, while a backlit agate bar is located aft of the deck. The bar, according to Cassetta, is the largest single slab of backlit agate on any yacht in the fleet.

4. Glass-bottomed balconies in the owner's suite

Offering a little more privacy, the owner's suite is fitted with two fold-down balconies – an extension of the yacht's indoor-outdoor theme. The balconies are fitted with a glass floor, perfect for watching sea life below. Tables and chairs can easily be arranged in the space, providing a lovely spot for a coffee or cocktails. In total, Grey (now Jimmy ) can accommodate a party of 12, with an owner's suite and a VIP cabin on the main deck. The lower deck contains two twin and two double cabins, with further quarters for nine crew.

5. An extensive use of glass

The interior benefits from enlarged windows in the open-plan saloon and dining area, while glass bulwarks on the main deck offer uninhibited sea views. This bright ambience is aided by the use of neutral-toned upholstery and carpets with cushions in a symphony of ocean blues scattered throughout the saloon and cabins.

6. Five outdoor spaces

With the pool forward and large Jacuzzi on the sundeck, Grey offers guests a choice of five outdoor spaces, spread over 300 square metres of deck, to dine or relax on. On the upper deck aft is a shaded al fresco dining area and at beach club level a large swim platform offers easy ocean access. 

In terms of numbers, the MCA-compliant, 499GT yacht has a top speed of 17 knots and cruising speed of 15 knots under her twin 1,400hp MAN diesel engines.

Who is Ajay Thakore? San Diego Lamborghini Yacht owner threatens dock worker in viral video

A n Indian-origin California business owner Ajay Thakore recently made headlines when he reportedly threatened a dockyard worker at San Diego's Marriott Marina after the latter refused to let the former park his $4.5 million Lamborghini Yacht, as per Times Now News.

The video of the incident has now gone viral online. While the face of the man threatening the dock employee saying "I will kill you!" multiple times remains unclear in the footage, many media outlets, including the New York Post confirmed it was Ajay Thakore, who has previously been part of similar confrontations.

Apart from threatening to kill the dock worker, the man in the video also flashed at the latter, as the yacht moved away from the marina. In the wake of this incident, here's looking at who Ajay Thakore is.

Ajay Thakore also goes by the name Ace Rogers

According to Daily Mail, Ajay Thakore also goes by the name Ace Rogers and he is a wealthy businessman and philanthropist based in San Diego, California. He is the CEO of Doctor Multimedia, a local medical marketing agency, and Gopher Media LLC.

He has previously faced similar controversy in 2021 when he was accused of harassing the employees of a La Jolla pizza joint called American Pizza Manufacturing. Its founder Andrew Melone alleged back then that it all started with Thakore defaming the take-and-bake pizza establishment on social media.

However, things escalated when the Indian-origin business owner reportedly parked two of his cars directly in front of the eatery, blocking its entrance, with texts, "Take N Bake Pizza Sucks" glaring on top of it.

Melone also claimed that an airplane flew over the locality with the banner reading, "Just Say No to Take N Bake Pizza." Not only that but Ajay Thakore reportedly involved another pizzeria in the area Carino's, with planes displaying messages like "Carino's Pizza is Better than Take N Bake."

Additionally, Thakore and his companies filed a $10 million lawsuit against Andrew Melone and his public accusations, claiming that they were "exercising their First Amendment Rights" and protesting against discrimination. The owner of the pizzeria countersued, alleging Thakore had persistently harassed him and his company. The two civil lawsuits are still underway.

Exploring the recent controversy surrounding Ajay Thakore

On the afternoon of March 10, 2024, Ajay Thakore's multimillion-dollar Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 yacht was not allowed to park in the Seaforth Boat Rental lot in San Diego's Marriott Marina. He was reportedly there to pick up an employee. The video of the incident has now gone viral.

It shows a man standing on the edge of the yacht threatening to "kill" the worker identified as Joseph Holt, as per CBS 8. Later, as the boat moved away from the dock, the former dropped his pants and made inappropriate gestures toward the 21-year-old employee. The harasser even threw $100 bills at the guy which fell into the water.

Holt told reporters that he "respectfully" told the driver not to park in the private space and was hoping to have a "conversation" with him about his "cool boat," when "it completely went the other way."

"I really didn't know how to process it. I really was trying to restrain myself from getting fired from my job or stepping out of line. The only thing I did was give him the bird," Holt stated.

The employee also mentioned how Thakore berated him for his minimum wage labor and called him a nobody who did nothing on a "silly job." The expensive boat owner allegedly threatened to have him fired using his "connections" and ruin his life.

The dock worker further continued,

"He had dropped his pants and started to make gestures to everybody watching and me. You can't act that way in public. It's just not okay. Especially threatening my life, at the very least. There were women and children there. That's the most important part."

In contrast, Ajay Thakore's public relations team told CBS 8 that the "interaction" was "regrettable."

"What started as a minor misunderstanding escalated into an argument, and I apologize for my actions and to those who witnessed the unfortunate exchange," the statement added.

Later, Ajay Thakore's employee Jason, whom the former was supposed to pick up during the fiasco, also issued a clarification via his boss' Instagram (@acerogersceo). He said that he was not allowed to get aboard, and was asked to "stand back" and even "forearmed" which is when Thakore allegedly "flipped" as he was protective of him, his fiancé, and his other employees, tagging it as a long-drawn misunderstanding.

In the caption of the post, it was Ajay Thakore who seemed to issue a statement:

"As a leader, I defend my own fiercely with everything I have, and I will never apologize for that. You can choose to believe that I just pulled up to the dock and started yelling, or you can realize that a lot happened before the cameras were rolling and that it takes two sides to escalate a situation."

Notably, in the aftermath of the incident, Port of San Diego Harbor Police were called in, who arrived 10 minutes after Ajay Thakore's boat left the marina. Joseph Holt told the news outlet that the officers didn't take his complaints seriously and were even laughing at him.

The department responded by telling CBS 8 that they were called in to deal with a "possible intoxicated vessel operator" who had departed the area before they got there and that they were unable to do anything with. The statement went on to say that a report had been made and that the police had spoken with the complainant and witnesses.

Palm Beach International Boat Show returns to West Palm Beach waterfront

The Palm Beach International Boat Show returns this week with more nearly 1,000 vessels on display, including super yachts from around the world.

Tickets are on sale now for the show that runs March 21-24 along the West Palm Beach waterfront.

The show, which started in 1982, has grown to a major economic engine for the community, with last year's impact estimated at $1.05 billion statewide — nearly as much as the $1.3 billion Miami International Boat Show, said Alyssa Freeman, executive director of the Marine Industries Association of Palm Beach County, which owns the boat show.

"Palm Beach is really not that far behind Miami, and Miami is the biggest in the world," Freeman said. "That was really exciting."

This year's boat show features an expanded Super Yacht Show at Palm Harbor Marina, showcasing yachts that typically stretch longer than 80 feet and have a variety of luxurious amenities that include hot tubs, crew quarters, dance floors and sun decks.

"We have more super yachts there than we ever have before, and they're even bigger," Freeman said, noting that at 236 feet, the vessel Casino Royale takes the title of largest yacht at this year's show. The title of "most expensive yacht" goes to Come Together, a 196-foot vessel priced at $59.95 million.

"Everybody, when they think about super yachts, they think about Monaco and Miami, but Palm Beach is a real player in these boat shows and the yachting world," Freeman said.

Exhibitors continue to be drawn to the Palm Beach International Boat Show by the opportunity for high sales year after year when compared with other South Florida boat shows, she said.

"I've heard from several of them, this is their favorite show to attend," Freeman said, "And that's why, because their sales are higher at Palm Beach."

The show continues to make headway in improving its sustainability efforts, she said. After reducing single-use plastics, a major change this year is the addition of water bottle refilling stations throughout the show, Freeman said.

"I think that's exciting because everybody's talking about sustainability and how we can be more sustainable," she said. "Every year, we take little steps to be more sustainable."

Freeman said she is excited for this year's AquaZone presented by Nautical Ventures. The attraction showcases some of the "yacht toys" that are new or popular on the market.

"It's so cool, because there are people actually in the water demoing yacht toys, and it's usually the latest and greatest," she said. "There's always something new every year that we've never seen before."

The Palm Beach International Boat Show also features a range of seminars, demonstrations and discussions throughout the weekend, including mental health in yachting, tips to boat to the Bahamas, safe boating to protect sea turtles and how to address active threats and piracy.

Freeman, who has children, said she loves the Kids Fishing Clinics scheduled for noon and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday with captain Don Dingman.

"Captain Don has been doing this for years, and he does a fantastic job," Freeman said. "The kids actually get to go home with a free rod and reel once the clinic is over."

The association produces the Palm Beach International Boat Show with Informa Markets' U.S. Boat Shows division.

"As we gear up for the 2024 Palm Beach International Boat Show, we are excited for our return to Downtown West Palm Beach to celebrate the rich history of this esteemed event," Andrew Doole, president of U.S. Boat Shows at Informa Markets, said in a news release. "Each year, we’re grateful for the warm welcome and support from the community, which truly makes this event a highlight on the calendar for both residents and visitors alike."

Informa also produces the Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary art show happening March 21-24, at the Palm Beach County Convention Center. A Windward VIP ticket to the boat show includes admission to the art show as well.

In addition to serving as a cornerstone festival of spring in West Palm Beach, the boat show launched the Palm Beach International Boat Show Gives Back program to provide hundreds of thousands of dollars in contributions to local nonprofits, Freeman said.

The grant program had a soft launch last year and formalized the boat show's four-decade practice of giving back to the community, Freeman said.

"We're really excited about it," said Freeman, who added that the boat show team is working with the Community Foundation to manage the grant program, which they hope to grow. "That's something that's a super high priority for us."

Money raised through a portion of the boat show's ticket sales, optional add-ons and some related activities goes toward the fund.

The boat show in February announced that the first round of grants totaling $500,000 would go to 25 nonprofits that have marine-related programs or projects, including Florida Fishing Academy, Loggerhead Marinelife Center, Florida Atlantic University, Inlet Grove High School, Palm Beach State College, Sea Turtle Adventures and Friends of Manatee Lagoon.

"We're hoping one day we'll be able to say that it's a million dollars," she said. "So fingers crossed. It relies on the success of the boat show and the support of the community. With that, we will continue to grow."
