Andreas Simic :

Without planning you are like a sailboat at sea. You will go in the direction of the wind’s whim and you will never get to where you want to go. The wind is like the opinion of others, take it for what it is and use it only when it will take you where you want to go.

Mark Reinecke :

I've had it there behind the house trying to think of something to do with it, that boat is like part of our family, but we also feel that the sailboat deserves to be at sea, not just sitting there, so when this situation came up, we said, 'Let them have it'. It's like passing it on to the next generation.

Tracy Chavous :

I started out wanting to sail and then I saw there was a sailboat that took you whale watching, that was awesome. And then there was a guarantee of seeing the whales. It was traditional and we wanted to see people sailing. That's what we got.

DHEC to test out boat turn-in program

BEAUFORT, S.C. (WTOC) - A sustainable way of disposing of old boats is coming to the Lowcountry this summer. The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, or DHEC, is testing out a vessel turn-in program.

The program is part of DHEC’s effort to keep abandoned and derelict vessels out of the water. They say abandoned vessels can damage coastal ecosystems and also become navigational hazards for boaters. Boats that are turned in will be dismantled into separate materials, where they will be thrown away or recycled, if possible. Fiberglass will be used to create an alternative fuel for a South-Carolina based cement kiln.

Accepted applicants can either haul their boats to drop-off sites or have them picked up by DHEC contractors. DHEC says working with local contractors is an important part of the program.

“There’s so many moving parts to this project, so we need somebody that’s able to transport these vessels, we need somebody that’s able to break them down, we need someone that has knowledge of the different recycling avenues, and of course someone with a huge shredder that can shred the fiberglass hulls,” said Julia Chrisco, Coastal Services Project Manager, SC DHEC.

You can find links to apply for the vessel turn-in program here . Applications are due on April 5.

75-year-old Georgia missionary escapes Haiti by boat as gang crisis rises

ATLANTA — As the crisis in Haiti grows , more people around the U.S. and Georgia are working to help their loved ones leave the country.

“Everything just kind of escalated,” Kim Patterson told Channel 2′s Audrey Washington .

Patterson said her concern has been growing with each passing day as her 75-year-old father, Boyce Young, sat stranded in Haiti for days.

“It was still unnerving,” Patterson explained.

She said her father arrived in the country in February to do missionary work.

But when political instability and gang violence started to rise, Patterson knew it was time for her father to get out of Haiti and back to Georgia.

“If people can’t get food, clean water and just the basic necessities, then desperation sets in,” Patterson added.

The crisis in Haiti grew to dire levels in early March when coalitions and rival gangs took control over certain areas.

According to the United Nations, about 80% of Port-Au-Prince is now controlled by gangs.

Fuel, food, and water remain scarce.

Late Monday, Patterson received the news she’d been hoping for: her father and his friend escaped Haiti safely.

“They were able to find a Haitian that took them by boat to the Haitian border. My dad said it was a four and half hour boat ride in six-to-eight-foot waves,” Patterson told Washington.

Patterson’s father and his friend eventually made it to the Dominican Republic and then to Santo Domingo.

Patterson said her thoughts are now with the people of Haiti.

“That’s what I keep thinking about are the people that are in that nation. I hope we as a country and other countries can come together and help them find a solution,” Patterson said.

Richard Simmons clarifies he's not dying after cryptic social media post

Fitness guru Richard Simmons works the crowd during one of his classes at Slimmons Studio on March 9, 2013 in Beverly Hills.

Fitness guru Richard Simmons shared a cryptic post Monday saying, “I am ... dying” while encouraging people to eat healthy and “hug” their loved ones.

He later clarified, saying he is not dying and apologizing for any confusion.

Simmons, 75, the fitness coach known for his eccentric personality and “Sweatin’ to the Oldies” workout videos, wrote Monday morning on Facebook and X that he had some news.

"Please don’t be sad. I am ... dying,” he said in the post. "Oh I can see your faces now. The truth is we all are dying. Every day we live we are getting closer to our death."

He continued: “Why am I telling you this? Because I want you to enjoy your life to the fullest every single day. Get up in the morning and look at the sky ... count your blessings and enjoy."

Simmons then encouraged his followers to start the day with a healthy meal and exercise.

“There is something else very important that you must do. Tell the ones that you love that you love them. Hug those people and children who you really care for. A big hug really goes a long way,” he added.

“If you have time I want you to listen to a terrific song. It is by Tim McGraw it is called Live Like You Were Dying. Live today and don’t forget to pray,” he concluded his post.

On Monday afternoon, Simmons posted an update.

"Sorry many of you have gotten upset about my message today. Even the press has gotten in touch with me. I am not dying," he wrote. "It was a message about saying how we should embrace every day that we have."

NBC News was among the outlets that asked Simmons for comment.

Once a frequent presence on TV, Simmons has been a recluse since 2014.

In January, he spoke up about a coming biopic about his life starring actor and comedian Pauly Shore, which Simmons said he never gave permission for .

“I have never given my permission for his movie. So don’t believe everything you read,” he wrote on Facebook at the time. “I no longer have a manager, and I no longer have a publicist. I just try to live a quiet life and be peaceful. Thank you for all your love and support."

Since his post about the biopic, Simmons has been writing with relative frequency on social media — offering motivational messages and sharing stories about moments and people who have affected his life. The posts have delved into topics like his childhood in New Orleans, racial segregation, fitness and his family.

He has also released several songs on YouTube, which he said in a post this month that he wrote with his partners, Chris and Kathy Phillips. "Most people have never heard them,” Simmons wrote.
