Lagoon 410 catamaran.

The successor of the Lagoon 42 , the Lagoon 410 catamaran is quite different in terms of the massive bridge deck saloon, saloon leveling, and the genoa jib it offers. It is wider which means it offers more lateral stability, safety, and volume.

DESIGN – INTERIOR & EXTERIOR

Accommodations.

The Lagoon 410 offers four large double cabins with a bathroom in each or one large washroom and a study in the starboard hull. The aft and the forward cabins are spacious, and can easily accommodate a family of 8 onboard, although the forward cabins are slightly narrower than the aft cabins. There is also headspace in not only the cabins but also the passageway to make movement easy and fluid. The bathrooms, however, are quite small but functional nevertheless.

The interior is finished with Mukali plywood which gives Lagoon 410 an elegant look while also being easy to clean and maintain.

Accessed via a wide doorway, the saloon is directly level with the cockpit without there being a need for a step.  The bridge deck saloon means that the saloon is even more spacious. It houses a comfortable seating area in the form of a settee that wraps around a table. A party of friends and family can easily be hosted while enjoying the panoramic views offered by the vertical windows. The navigation station inside the saloon comprises only a navigation desk where all the controls along with two monitors are installed.

Positioned to starboard, the galley is well-equipped with not only a refrigerator but also a chest freezer and two-burner gas stove. There are lockers in the aft lounge which allow for storage of enough supplies so various stopovers are not needed. Adjoining the galley is the lounge so reaching out for supplies or passing over snacks is easy and efficient.

The Lagoon 410 has a spacious saloon, cockpit, and side-decks. The movement around the deck is made safe with raised ledgers so there is no risk of falling over on a rough day. The storage lockers underneath the side-deck run deep and have enough space to store multiple things such as ropes and other gear.

The cockpit of the Lagoon 410 is the most redesigned part of the boat with a raised helm station. The helm station has an elevated helm seat and all the motor controls are within reach, with a control panel on the console. The cockpit itself is well-protected from sea spray to ensure no one on deck gets wet when on rough seas but the bimini protecting the cockpit from the sun also has an opening so that the helm person can stand up and maneuver with excellent visibility if need be.  There is also a table surrounded by the bench in the cockpit which makes for a good seating area.

The foredeck does not have much to offer except for one large trampoline. There are multiple lockers on deck which hold water tanks while there are generators to starboard and to port.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

As far as the sails of the Lagoon 410 are concerned, it offers Spectra mainsail with an area of 53 sq. meters and a genoa jib which has an area of 36 sq. meters. The sails require a team of people to work and are dangerous for a single-person crew to maintain as the positioning of the winches requires running to and fro. However, installing an additional winch can help solve the problem by leading all the lines to the helm station.

The hull of the Lagoon 410 catamaran is made up of polyester-vinyl which provides 410 with increased buoyancy and reduced weight. The overall length of Lagoon 410 12.37 meters while the maximum beam is 7.09 meters. The minimum draft of the catamaran is 1.20 meters. The total water capacity is 390 liters while the total fuel capacity is 200 liters.

Lagoon 410 catamaran is powered by two 40-horsepower diesel engines. The engine bay of the Lagoon 410 has easy access underneath the bed via stairs which means that the engines can be easily maintained and checked. However, the downside of having the engine bay located in such a way is that the vibrations of the engines can be felt while sleeping in the cabins. The diesel for the engines is stored in the tanks beneath the aft cabin floor which means it is important to make sure that the tank is not completely full or else it will rub against the floorboards.

PRICE RANGE

The price of the Lagoon 410 catamaran varies from $200,000 to $250,000.

In conclusion, the Lagoon 410 catamaran is a good, low-budget choice for a family to go offshore sailing. It is comfortably equipped, has enough storage space and follows an easy layout. Some minor adjustments can further help customize the boat to fully meet the owner’s expectations.

The Lagoon 410 is a 40’7” (12.37m) cruising catamaran designed by VPLP Design (France). She was built between 1997 and 2006 by Lagoon (France) with 283 hulls completed. The Lagoon 410 S2 Catamaran is an updated version of the Lagoon 410. After launching more than one hundred Lagoon 410’s since its first introduction in 1997, Lagoon introduced the Lagoon 410-S2. Modifications to the Lagoon 410 were made in many areas: ergonomic, comfort, maneuverability and more standard equipment.

lagoon 410 catamaran

The Lagoon 410 was one of the French manufacturer’s most successful 2nd Generation models, along with the L380 . This boat remains very popular on the second hand market.

The 410 replaced the 1st generation 42 in 1997 and was the first in the new series of designs after Lagoon was bought by Beneteau. This is where they started to veer towards comfort over performance, but these early models still had punchy Sail Area to Displacement ratios (SA/D) and were sturdily built. The world has moved on considerably of course, with yachts like the Bali Catspace competing in this market segment, but the 410 has stood the test of time. It remains an excellent 2nd hand option in this size range.

Compared to the sportier Lagoon 42, VPLP designed this boat with more space inside and put the saloon on a level with the cockpit (pretty innovative at the time). The keels were made fuller, with more volume on the ends of the hulls to reduce pitching. It’s no exaggeration to say that this boat has inspired many later designs though. Read our Leopard 42 review for an example.

Photo credit: Nicolas Claris, Insta @jessicaandryanadventures, @sailingfamily_troppo

The 410 was built wider to increase lateral stability, safety and volume. They reduced the size of the main and increased the size of the jib with the same overall sail area. This is no performance cat (read our O-Yachts Class 4 review if that is what you are after), but it does what it set out to do very well.

The 410 is now a classic catamaran.

  • If you keep her light, she performs very well for a cruising catamaran.
  • The Lagoon is a very easy boat to access and work on.
  • More living space than a 380, more storage, more comfortable galley.
  • Probably 10-20% faster than a 380 under sail and power and more comfortable in a seaway
  • Will do 50-60% of windspeed on a reach and point to 45 degrees, although you are better dropping off 10.
  • Spacious heads for this size boat
  • Good visibility from the helm position
  • The interior furnishing doesn’t wear too well (eg delaminating wood interiors). That’s an easy fix though
  • The 410s are solid glass below the waterline with a balsa core above the waterline. If it stays dry this is no problem, but if moisture has crept in, it can be expensive to repair. Check all deck gear is firmly attached and sealed (pad eyes, bolts, blocks, stanchions, posts, etc).
  • Engines are under the bunks. You could also argue this as a “Pro” as it keeps the weight centred. Access is through the rear cabins though.
  • Owners have reported slapping on the flat surface under the aft berths (square step). In big waves, this can get noisy

410 and 410 S2

As with many of the Lagoons of this generation, the 410 had a design upgrade halfway through its life and became the Lagoon 410 S2

The main changes from the 410 to 410 S2 are:

  • Bigger windows in cabins letting more light in and improving the view  from the berths.
  • They  rearranged the galley.
  • The halyards were moved from the mast to the cockpit
  • Electric winch installed for main halyard and mainsheet
  • The anchor placement to the bow.

The Lagoon 410 is easy to move around in, with decent headroom, and wide passageways. The helm position design was such a success, that they haven’t really changed it since (on this size of Lagoon).

They developed the 410 as a roomier boat than its predecessor (the 42). a big market for this boat was the charter market, of course, but it was also a popular owner’s boat with the owner’s hull configuration: a large starboard shower-room and head and a study in place of the fore starboard cabin on the charter versions.

The charter versions can have up to four double cabins, each with a head.

The Raised Helm

The Raised Helm on the 410 was an undoubted design success and has been continued into the newer Lagoon designs and copied by much of the competition.

The 410 is pleasant to sail, with good handling in a seaway and moderate pitching. On port tack, close hauled on a windy day, you will need your wet weather gear, but on most points of sail you are well protected. She is an easy boat to sail short handed, despite the fact that she doesn’t have a self tacking jib, and well organised, particularly on the 410 s2.

You can expect  7 knots or so close-hauled with 16 knots TWS, and these speeds will head just over 10 knots as you bear away and the wind freshens. 100 degree tacks are achievable in decent conditions.

If you are looking for a 40 foot second hand cruising catamaran, the 410 should be on your list. She matches the 380 as a classic catamaran design. They built less of the 410s though, so it will be harder to find a decent one. The extra length and stability of the 410 over the 380 is worth considering if you have the budget or you are considering longer passages.

How much is a Lagoon 410 on the second hand market? What is the price for one of these catamarans? These boats are popular. You can expect to pay between US$ 180,000 and $250,000 depending on the age and condition.

How many 410 hulls did Lagoon build? The 410 was in production from 1997 to 2006. A long run! They build around 280 units in that time. Not as many as the 380, but still, a substantial number.

The Lagoon 410 catamaran is a super fun toy to sail in, thanks to its superb performance and the many comfy amenities it offers on board.

Considering how spacious this vessel is, you can actually hop aboard with a couple of family members or a bunch of friends and sail your holiday away in style.

Here is the Lagoon 410 catamaran review that will give you a clear picture of what this beautiful vessel has to offer.

Table of Contents

Accommodation

The Lagoon 410 has a total of 8 berths (four double berths) and four toilets, which are just enough to enjoy with all your guests while on a charter sailing trip. Both the rear and forward berths are spacious enough to accommodate the sleeping needs of an entire family or a couple of friends.

Two of the aft berths run athwartships while those on the fore run longitudinally. The aft berths are well-ventilated and feature an opening skylight and a number of portlights too. There’s also sufficient space in the lockers and the under the bed where you can store your belonging for the entire trip.

The forward berths are narrower and can be a great place for big teenagers to sleep in. A larger part of the berth is finished with Mukali plywood, something that makes the space simple while lending it a classic feel.

The interior of the Lagoon 410 cat is as comfortable and cozy as it can ever be. The saloon, which can be accessed via a wide doorway, features a premium seating space with a double bench seating around the table for a sizable amount of guests to relax as they enjoy a conversation or watch TV.

It also boasts of 1.85 meters of headroom, which means you can come along with some tall friends without worry. Another amazing feature of the saloon is its wide windows that allow you to enjoy panoramic views of the sea and the surroundings.

The galley, which is situated on the starboard’s forequarter, is both practical and well-equipped. Aside from the two-burner gas cooker, the galley also has a chest freezer and a refrigerator, where you can keep your perishables.

There’s also enough storage space in the aft lounge lockers, where you can store supplies for a weeklong or so cruise without the need to restock at various stopovers. The galley adjoins the lounge, which makes reaching for supplies quite easier.

After cruising the whole day and engaging in various water sports activities, you require a comfortable bed on which to lay your head. And the Lagoon 410’s cabins are both spacious and cozy, which means you are guaranteed a sound night’s sleep.

The Lagoon 410 has plenty of usable deck space perfect for lounging or relaxing while sitting. The cockpit is set on the catamaran’s rear, and there’s a bimini that provides effective protection from the sun.

You can also chill at the al fresco dinette table as you wait for or enjoy your favorite seafood or any other meal. The foredeck has a large trampoline, where you can lounge as you read a book or sip your favorite tipple or drink.

Moving around the deckhouse is quite seamless thanks to the vessel’s raised ledgers. And if you would like to enjoy some swimming or snorkeling action, then you can conveniently get into the water via the rear skirts.

The Lagoon 410 is a great toy that offers excellent performance at sea. It features Spectra mainsail and genoa jib as well as well-cut sails.

The hull is made of a polyester-vinyl ester foam sandwich that promotes positive buoyancy and minimizes weight for a perfect sail. The crew can enjoy excellent visibility from the helm, which makes mooring relatively simple.

The catamaran, which features two hulls, can also maneuver well in crowds marinas without the need for a thruster, unlike vessels with large monohulls. And apart from the engine alternators, there are two 145W solar panels that can charge the battery.

The cat’s dual 40hp Yanmar sail drive diesel engines are powerful enough to get you sailing for hundreds if not thousands of miles without stopping. This is something any sailor would love.

Accommodation on the Lagoon 410 is great, thanks to the comfortable and spacious four double berths. The well-organized saloon seating, kitchen area, and lounge room, as well as the sufficient ventilation, also add to the comfort aspect of the cat.

In addition, there’s plenty of space on the foredeck with a trampoline where you can lie lazily as you enjoy the scenery around you. Everything about the Lagoon 410 is literally easygoing, and that’s what a sailing trip should be all about.

It’s a rich man’s dream, for a modestly rich one. It’s like a house on the water!

I didn’t know that house boats had their own terminology for areas in a house. For example, I didn’t know that “saloon” could mean “living room in a boat” (pronounced “salon”).

Reading this review makes me excited to have such a boat one day, for my own home.

Hi Michael,

Yes, that’s right, you rent a comfortable house on the water:) What could be better?

You don’t have to be rich to rent a boat. There are many affordable yachts for sailing holidays. Here is an excellent article about yacht charter vs. Hotel . I am sure you’ll enjoy the reading:)

Thank you or the comment and wish you a great day!

I must say that this lagoon 410 catamaran certainly looks like a winner. Having 4 double beds, toilets and wash room makes it very suitable for families and friends. When you charter such a boat, does it come with someone to sail it or can you easily do it yourself if experienced? It boggles the mind that you can have your home at sea for a while with all the amenities this yacht offers. Thanks for this eye-opener.

Indeed, the 410 is a spacious boat that can accommodate a large family.  If you have sailing experience and a skipper license, then yes you can handle the boat yourself. If you don’t have any experience, then you may hire an experimented skipper and a hostess for more comfort. And, you are absolutely right, this boat is like a real home that floats on the water:)

Thank you for the comment and wish you a fantastic day!

Looks beautiful! It’s bigger than any I’ve used in the past.

Are these available to rent and what’s an expected price range for the rental? I would consider this if I return to Aruba or visit the Caribbean with my whole extended family.

This is in a very different category but do you have experience with jetskis? What would be your advice to a buyer if so??

    Hi Jordan,

Yes, the 410 Lagoon is a spacious boat, and it is for charter. The price starts from $2700 per week and can rise depending on your requirement, seasons and other factors. My advice to you for jet skis, rent one before you buy it! That way you can feel it and decide whether it is or not for you. If you like it and you can afford it, then go for it:)

I hope it helped and please, don’t hesitate to contact me with any question, I’ll be more than happy to assist!

Thank you for the comment and wish you a lovely day.

Multihull of the year

Lagoon 410 S2

We conducted our test of the new version of the Lagoon 410 in the first days of September. The convoy from Hyères to the Cannes Boat Show at this time of the year usually requires having the accessories to deal with lull: gennaker and light sheets! The unexpected swelling of a major “Cévenol phenomenon” with its high winds presented completely different conditions and, while all that hot air was causing unprecedented catastrophic flooding in the Gard département, we were fighting the 30-knot spots of an unpleasant easterly wind accompanied by choppy seas with a contrary current at 2 knots. This tough unforeseen sailing provided a full-scale test of what many owners and renters of multihulls experience when they are required to reach a destination against the local winds and weather!

Under sail, this Lagoon 410S2 showed her mettle: excellent seaworthiness despite difficult conditions…

Test Lagoon 410

The new version of the 410S2 has all the 410’s sailing qualities…

Introduction

When production first began, the Lagoon 410 appealed to over 100 buyers! Very much present in rental fleets, this model was also greatly appreciated by many owners who view her as a simple reliable boat on a human scale. Produced by a well-known shipyard and resulting from prestigious designers, the 410’s 12 meters provide the arguments necessary to convince a family of travelers. The restyling in the S2 version of this commercial success was, for us, an opportunity to test the 410 in her maturity.

The 410 S2, a versatile catamaran, as pleasant for rental as for longer cruises…

What’s new onboard the 410 S2?

Most of the changes concern the features and the deck layout. Thus, the transoms were redesigned with trunks providing access to the helm transmissions. In the starboard hull, the companionway was advanced and the galley block reworked (it now opens onto the cockpit with a sliding partition). In the owner’s version, the starboard hull is a real private apartment, closed with a door, which completely separates it from life onboard. The organization of the fittings was restruc...
