What to Wear to a Yacht Wedding? [yacht club wedding attire]
Dressing for a yacht wedding can be both fun and challenging at the same time. On one hand, you have the opportunity to wear something unique and on the other hand, there are some definite do’s and don’ts when it comes to dressing for a yacht wedding. In this post, we’ll take a look at what to wear on land and what to bring with you when you’re cruising on the high seas!
Yacht Club Wedding Attire
Consider the time of year, weather, and location.
When choosing what to wear to a yacht wedding, it’s important to consider the time of year, weather, and location. If the wedding is taking place in the summertime, you can wear lighter fabrics like cotton or linen. However, if the wedding is taking place in the fall or winter, you’ll want to opt for something a little warmer like wool or cashmere.
The weather will play a part in determining what you’ll wear to the wedding too. It can get very hot outside during the summer months, so something breezy would be appropriate. However, if it’s during the wintertime and there’s snow on the ground, opt for something heavy like down instead.
The location of the wedding is also important to consider. If the yacht is docked in a busy city, you’ll want to dress accordingly. However, if the yacht is sailing in open water, you can dress more casually.
Accessories
When it comes to accessories, there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind. First, you’ll want to avoid wearing accessories that are too casual. This look will clash with the occasion’s dress code, so save your beach cover-up for another day.
Instead, opt for necklaces and earrings that are suitable for formal occasions. You can also wear bracelets if there aren’t any stipulations regarding visible body jewelry.
As for shoes, you’ll want to choose something dressy and elegant. If the wedding is taking place on land, you can wear heels. However, if the wedding is taking place on a yacht, it might be better to wear flats so you don’t have to worry about slipping and falling.
Choose a color scheme that matches your personality
When it comes to choosing a color scheme, you’ll want to think about your personality. If you’re the type of person who loves to stand out, you can choose a bold color like red or green. However, if you prefer to stick to neutrals, black, white , and gray are always safe choices.
No matter what color you choose to wear, you’ll want to make sure your outfit coordinates with the rest of the bridal party. If there’s a theme, try wearing colors that match it. For example, if the wedding has a nautical theme, blue and white would be appropriate.
Dress for comfort - this is a long day!
A yacht wedding can be a lot of fun, but it’s also a long day. You’ll want to dress for comfort, so choose something you’ll feel good in all day long. That might mean a flowy dress for women or a comfortable suit for men.
Choose a color that pops
Since you’ll be spending most of the day outside, it’s a good idea to choose a color that pops. This will make you stand out against the background of the ocean and the yachts. Bold colors like red, orange and yellow are perfect dresses for this type of wedding .
Be mindful of what you wear to avoid spills on your clothes or shoes
This seems like a really obvious tip, but the best way to keep your clothes from getting ruined is by simply dressing appropriately.
Don’t wear anything you particularly love if someone spills champagne on it, you will not be pleased! We recommend sticking to neutrals rather than going for bold colors or patterns that may easily pick up dirt or food stains. It’s the unfortunate truth that the risk of spills is high at a yacht wedding, so always dress accordingly.
But also keep in mind what you will be standing on
Wedding boats are usually on the smaller side, so they can get crowded quickly. Don’t wear heels that you can’t walk or stand in and watch where you step not only will you run the risk of falling, but for other reasons, we’ll discuss below.
Wear closed-toed shoes
You may find yourself standing on a boat deck all night long without ever getting into the water (and that’s great!), but there is always a possibility that your feet could get wet.
Plus, there’s the chance you’ll be walking on slippery surfaces or in areas where there may be a lot of seaweed both of which are easier navigated with closed-toe shoes.
If you’re not into the idea of wearing anything other than your favorite pair of sandals, then go for it but you might want to bring a backup pair of shoes (and socks!) just in case.

The only thing more exciting than seeing your friend get engaged to their "person"? Receiving the invite to their dream destination wedding in Tulum or Vegas, baby. Of course, you'll want to look your best on the big day so the pressure is on to find the perfect destination wedding guest dress to pack for the festivities—plus everything else you'll need to enjoy your stay in style, like a travel adapter so you can actually do your hair or a cute coat to keep you comfortable when the sun goes down.
The good news is, most modern couples now have an entire wedding website dedicated to what to bring, wear and a breakdown of what the weather will be like while you're there. Online, you'll typically find more detailed information (and maybe even a mood board too!) unpacking the wedding dress code , which is great if the invitation left you feeling a little bit unsure of what exactly "black-tie optional" means on the Amalfi Coast.
Generally speaking, beachy weddings call for something slightly more casual, flowy and fun—perhaps with a shorter hemline—while a luxe wedding at a historic hotel in Rome will lend itself to more formal attire: think elegant evening gowns or something chic, shimmery and modern. A quick search of the venue/locale and a text to the couple can clear up any confusion too, if you're worried about over or underdressing for the occasion.
From whimsical princess dresses for an Irish fairytale castle wedding to cool, cutout numbers for a hip Palm Springs ceremony, we've searched high and low to discover the best destination wedding guest dresses for every location and style. And if you're stumped on what to say when you inevitably post your fly 'fit to the 'gram? We've curated the best destination wedding captions too! Read on to explore your options.
What to Look for in a Destination Wedding Guest Dress
There's a lot to take into consideration when shopping for a great destination wedding guest dress—from the location and venue to the weather, season, dress code and even the time of day the ceremony starts. To make sure you say "yes" to a dress that slays for the big day, ask yourself these three important questions. And remember, have fun with it—it's your vacation too!
Does it pass the vibe/theme check? Pay attention to the overall vibe of the location, venue and invitations, which will often give you a huge hint as to whether the wedding will be super formal or more relaxed and low-key, in which case, your dress will be too. More and more couples are also choosing to literally spell out the destination wedding dress code (think garden-party formal) for you. Of course, if there's a theme like modern industrial or boho chic, that makes it simple to narrow down the right dress too.
Is it practical? A ball gown on a beach in Bali is a hard pass. Definitely check the weather and what time of day the wedding begins (and ends) before making your dress selection. You don't want to be uncomfortable in a structured evening gown on the sand or shivering in a short cocktail dress after the sun sets.
Do you love it? A destination wedding is a great excuse to buy a fabulous dress you love and that makes you feel amazing. If you can find something that fits your personal style and the dress code, well, that's a win-win.

What To Wear To A Wedding On A Boat – All You Need to Know!
A wedding on the water is different than a wedding on land. There are some dress code rules you need to follow to look good and stay safe. Also, marriages can occur during the day, in the afternoon, or evening and therefore, you’ll have to dress accordingly. So you better be well prepared before you get to the ceremony. The last thing you want is to get stuck with inappropriate outfits. Right? But don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. In this article, you’ll find everything you need to know about what to wear to a wedding on a boat so that you can feel good about yourself and, most importantly, enjoy!
Table of Contents
Attire To Wear a Boat Wedding During The Day
Fashion blunders are difficult to hide during the day. You have to look effortlessly cool and stylish without outshining the bride or groom. Finding the right balance is challenging but not impossible. Fortunately, you have quite a few options at your disposal:
Daylight calls for lighter colors like blue and tan. Again, though, at the end of the day, the dress code dictated by invitation will determine your attire of choice. In most cases, weddings require the same style that would fit a high-end restaurant, regardless of the time of day or night.
In other words, a white-tie affair means black tailcoats, white shirts, vests, bowties, and gloves, not to mention opera shoes. Black Tie events necessitate dark tuxedos, light dress shirts, and an appropriately colored bow tie. Dress shoes are the norm.
But the average wedding on a boat is usually associated with semi-formal attire, which means that colored linen shirts and beige slacks are fine, possibly even a jacket. The bride and groom will also excuse sport coats, khakis, and Polos. Shorts are a stretch. Though, some people can make them work, especially if the wedding encourages casual attire, in which case, you might as well throw a relaxed buttoned-down shirt with short sleeves into the mix.
Ties are not necessary, even with the tan or cream-colored suits that often appear during daytime events. However, depending on the weather, they may become a source of considerable discomfort, which is the last thing you want during a boat wedding.
You cannot go wrong with a long, formal dress for a White Tie event. But the dress shouldn’t be so long that it sweeps the floor. You don’t want to trip on it. Poufy dresses are tricky because they complicate sitting. And as you might expect, heels are highly discouraged.
Black tie events call for similar attire. But again. Since this is a wedding on a boat, and such parties are typically associated with semi-formal clothing, women have many options. They can experiment with dressy skirts, tops, and short dresses (below the knees).
Elegant pantsuits are all the rage in some circles, and for a good reason—the colors matter. Aim for tropical tones that match the environment. With shoes , comfort is crucial, which is why many women target formal flats and wedges.
If the invitation did not specify a dress code, loose-fitting clothing (like a Maxi dress) would make your experience far more pleasant, particularly in warm, humid weather.
In most cases, children can dress however they like. But, naturally, their clothes should be spotless and free of holes and tears. Otherwise, so long as they are comfortable, neither the bride nor the groom will care.
Attire To Wear To A Boat Wedding In The Evening
Evening weddings provide some cover for guests with a less than attractive fashion sense. However, they also place greater emphasis on elegance. Consider the following:
Evening weddings are associated with formal styles. That means darker suits for men. The right man can pull off a white dinner jacket and suits with brighter colors. But evening receptions call for navy blue, black, charcoal, and various shades of black and gray. With shoes , look for dark leather non-slip, non-marking brands.
Casual events are just as strict. You can’t just stroll in with a loose T-shirt and flip-flops. Instead, aim for button-down shirts and dress pants. Slacks and loafers are acceptable.
Look for formal, longer dresses and gowns. But, again, they can’t be so long that they sweep the floor when you walk. You can also wear skirts and dress pants. A wrap dress seems casual, but it would fit right in with an evening wedding on a boat. The same goes for a shirt dress. Identify matching dress slippers, structured sandals, and dress pumps. Aim for shoes with some grip.
Get formalwear for your kids. That means suits with button-down shirts (boys) and appropriate dresses with dressy shoes (Girls). Even though wedding dress codes rarely address kids, your children’s attire has to fit the atmosphere of an evening wedding. So again, make sure their attire is comfortable.
What Not To Wear To A Wedding On The Boat
Boat weddings demand the same precautions as ordinary weddings. That means women cannot wear white. Also, sleeveless and strapless clothing is rarely appropriate for religious ceremonies. However, boat weddings also introduce several complications that do not matter as much on land, which is why you have to keep the following in mind:
1). You can’t be too casual, not unless the invitation says otherwise. Sunglasses are fine. So are hats , especially if they match your outfit. In fact, they are encouraged in sunny conditions. However, shorts are a bad idea. Again, unless the invitation says otherwise, anyone wearing shorts tends to stand out, and not in a good way.
This applies to jeans, stretchy pants, shirts with brands and logos, and any other piece of clothing you usually find in a beach setting.
2). The length of the dress matters. Many women understand the importance of avoiding long dresses that trail across the floor. However, it doesn’t always occur to them to avoid short dresses as well. Boat weddings are typically accompanied by relatively windy conditions. A single gust of wind will send a loose dress flying, and the last thing you want is to unintentionally flash the bride and groom during an emotional speech.
3). Like shorts, sneakers are risky. They may set you apart in the worst way. You should avoid them and shoes that look like sneakers unless the invitation says otherwise. This is true for flip-flops as well.
4). If you want to wear shoes, pants, or dresses that expose your legs and feet, pay careful attention to your grooming ladies. Creams and lotions are just as important for your legs as they are for your face. In addition, of course, pedicures are highly encouraged. And if you don’t feel confident showing the lower extremity, avoid short dresses, shorts, and open-toed shoes.
- If the wedding takes place during the summertime on the deck, you must wear a hat to protect yourself from the sun. However, you don’t need any hats for the evening unless you want to add an elegant style to your look.
- Again, you want to wear polarized sunglasses to protect your eyes from the dazzling sun during the summer and apply sunscreen on your skin.
- Even if it’s a formal wedding, I highly suggest you not wear a floor-length dress. You could trip on it and get a severe injury.
- Some boat owners don’t allow guests to wear shoes onboard because it scratches and damages the deck. So you will either have to take off your shoes or wear non-marking shoes.
- High heels give a sexy look to ladies’ legs, but please, leave them at home and instead wear flat sandals.
- At sea, mosquitoes start to be active around 4:00 pm and work ard all night until dawn. So if you want to enjoy the wedding, make sure to bring some mosquito repellent. I use citronella or lavender oils. Both work fantastically and don’t cause any allergies to the skin.
- The last piece of advice. Some people get sick on a boat , so you should consider using wristbands or take something to prevent seasickness.
Final Words
Wearing the proper attire at a boat wedding is important, but don’t overthink, and if you follow the advice stated in the article, you should find the appropriate outfits. Whatever you decide to wear, it’s super important that your clothes reflect your personality and that you feel comfortable in them!

This was such an excellent article on wedding wear for weddings on a boat. I get the impression that you have had plenty of experience as you picked all the best suggestions and also warned against the worst problems. Thanks for the reminder about not wearing white as I wear this all the time and it certainly would be in bad taste. It is so important to wear shoes with good grip and no or low heels. No dresses too short or fly away. Could you probably wear a type of dress with slacks or thin pants underneath? They may be the most comfortable and very stylish.
Thank you, I am glad you’ve found my article useful:)
Sure, you can wear a dress with pants or slacks underneath if you feel comfortable with it. What matters most is that you feel good with what you wear and, of course, that it adheres to the invitation’s dress code:)
I hope it helped. Please let me know if you need more info. I’ll be more than happy to assist.
Thank you for the comment, and I wish you a lovely day.
I think it can be very interesting to have a wedding on a boat. I am happy that you pointed out the fact that you need to wear some protection against the sun. I also think that it is a good idea to wear white or colors instead of black. Lighter colors help to keep you cool during the day. I think waterproof clothes might also be a good idea, but I don’t think one should go overboard with them.
You are right. Dark colors tend to absorb the heat, so yes, it’s better to dress in light clothes.
If you need any help, please, let,e know. I am always happy to assist:)
Thank you for the comment, and I wish you a lovely day!

How To Dress For A Wedding At A Yacht Club
Table of Contents:
It can be exciting and difficult at the same time to dress for a yacht wedding. You have the chance to wear something distinctive, but there are also some clear dos and don’ts when it comes to dressing for a yacht wedding. What to wear on land and what to pack for a cruise on the open seas will be discussed in this post.
It’s crucial to take the location, time of year, and weather into account when deciding what to wear to a yacht wedding. You can dress in airier materials like cotton or linen if the wedding is in the summer. Choose something a little cozier, like wool or cashmere, if the wedding is taking place in the fall or winter.
What you choose to wear to the wedding will also depend on the weather. Something cool would be appropriate because the summer months can be very hot outside. In contrast, if it’s winter and there is snow on the ground, choose something heavy like down.
How much is the yacht staff paid?
Typically, salaries range from $3,200 to $10,500 per month.
I wonder what they make? is a thought you might have had if you’ve ever binge-watched Below Deck or fantasized about working on a posh yacht. The chance to work on the most opulent ships in the world has attracted a lot of people from all over the world who are eager to mingle with the elite.
If you have wondered what the salaries are for workers on a yacht and want to take the next step toward a great mix of freedom and pay, joining a luxury yacht crew might be for you.
Although they can be challenging, yacht crew jobs can be among the most rewarding professions. When requesting a crew position, it’s crucial to know what to expect. What to look for when applying for a job as a yacht crew is broken down here.
Is it appropriate for a woman to wear pants to a wedding?
Yes, you most definitely can wear pants to a wedding. If you don’t like dresses or your legs aren’t your best feature, wearing pants is totally acceptable as long as you consider the venue and time of day.
The season for summer weddings is in full swing, and some of you may be considering what to wear. Absolutely, you are allowed to wear pants to a wedding. As long as you consider the time of day and the venue, wearing pants is totally acceptable if you don’t like dresses or your legs aren’t your best feature. Here are some tips on how to feel comfortable wearing pants to a wedding.
If you’re unsure, ask the bride, the bride’s mother, or a member of the wedding party for some guidelines. The wedding dress code may be specified on the invitation. As a wedding guest, it’s always preferable to be overdressed than underdressed in a pinch.
Dress pants with a nice flowy look and enough class to be appropriate for a black-tie optional wedding are made of silk, soft crepe, or covered in chiffon.
What do female guests wear to weddings?
Women should wear a formal floor-length gown that covers their ankles at the hem, but if the wedding appears to be a little less formal, a chic cocktail dress might also be acceptable. Elegant pant suits are also available for women.
Between “black-tie optional” and “semi-formal,” the language in wedding invitations can be difficult to understand, leaving you completely in the dark about the appropriate attire for wedding guests. According to Alicia Mae, CEO of the New Jersey-based wedding planning company IL Events, “the most common wedding dress code is formal attire, although many couples would prefer their guests to arrive in black-tie attire.”.
Even though formal attire may be the most typical, a wedding invitation may specify any number of other dress codes. It can be challenging for guests to decide which level of formality they want to adopt because formal, semi-formal, and casual are a bit more ambiguous than, say, black-tie.
Discovering more about the setting is one of the best ways to choose what to wear. “As a guest, I would first think of the wedding location as the background that sets the tone,” says Mae. How much do yacht visitors leave in tips?
Almost every guest on a yacht charter is curious about how to tip the crew. The general rule is to tip between 10% and 15% of your weekly charter fee, excluding running costs and taxes, according to the Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association’s (MYBA) tipping guidelines.
How to Calculate the Right Gratuity for Your Crew: Stress-Free Tipping.
Almost every guest on a private yacht charter is curious about how much to tip and how to tip the crew. According to the Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association (MYBA) tipping guidelines, the general rule is to tip between 10 percent and 15 percent of your weekly charter fee, excluding running expenses and taxes. In light of this, allow the captain to determine who receives how much gratuity during your charter.
It’s customary to place your entire tip in an envelope and give it to your captain on the last day of your yacht trip. Include a personal note, tell the captain how great the crew was, and leave it up to the captain to decide how to split the tip if your trip was fantastic (and why wouldn’t it be?). Fair treatment for all Your yacht is run by a large crew, from the deckhands setting up the slide for you to the stewardesses refreshing your cocktails. Though it may be tempting, it’s not a good idea to tip members who face forward more generously. It’s important to recognize the crew as a unit because they work as a team.
What serves as a yacht club’s purpose?
A yacht club is a social club for people who enjoy boating. Yacht clubs are frequently located close to bodies of water, and their members are either boat owners or people who lease or rent boats. There is a monthly or yearly membership fee. In the clubs’ cafés, bars, and restaurants, members can mingle in a relaxed setting.
Although they might seem intimidating, yacht clubs are not. Honoring boaters and the sports of cruising, sailing, and yacht racing is the goal of a yacht club.

Clubhouse cafés, bars, and restaurants provide a casual setting for members to interact. In some clubs, the restaurant may be open to the public during specific times of the day but closed for yacht club functions.
Should a female wedding guest wear black?
In general, Sabatino says, “Wearing black is totally acceptable, as the hue is very versatile.”. Unless otherwise instructed, you ought to refrain from donning white.
Wedding planners and bridal stylists, two authorities, offer their opinions on this potentially complex subject.
It can be difficult to choose the appropriate wedding attire; for instance, you might wonder if black is appropriate. The quick response is that it depends on the wedding. According to Laurie Arons of Laurie Arons Special Events, “the rules around the color have definitely softened in recent years,” adding that it’s no longer improper to wear a hue so strongly linked to mourning to weddings and other joyful occasions. Today, she notes, “you even see bridesmaids in stylish black gowns of their own choosing.”.
We asked Arons and bridal stylist Julie Sabatino for some key factors to help you decide whether black is appropriate for the wedding you’re attending.
Do you bring heels to a yacht party?
Footwear. Your shoes are a crucial component of your overall outfit when dressing for a yacht party. A lot of yacht rental companies advise customers to wear comfortable shoes while on the vessel, so stay away from high heels. For safety reasons, primarily.
Dubai is a opulent city known for its opulent hotels, spas, resorts, restaurants, entertainment venues, and other establishments. Partying on an opulent yacht is the best thing to do in such a wealthy city. You would want to look your best whether you were attending a staff party, a special event, or a get-together with friends. Read the rest of this comprehensive guide to yacht party attire.
Your footwear is a crucial component of your overall look when dressing for a yacht party. A lot of yacht rental companies advise customers to wear comfortable shoes while on the vessel, so stay away from high heels. For safety reasons, primarily. Although sneakers are fine, most women prefer to wear fancy sandals or flip-flops, depending on the outfit. Whatever shoes you decide to wear, make sure they are comfortable and light.
Less is more when it comes to yacht parties. Women should stick to wearing either an off-the-shoulder maxi dress, a knee-length summer dress, or a flowy dress. You can also choose a shirtdress and complete the look by wearing your favorite sandals or flip flops. Instead of wearing a suit, men should opt for lightweight clothing instead, like a cotton or linen shirt and a pair of chino shorts. You can roll the sleeves of long sleeve shirts up during the day and down at night.
What is inappropriate for wedding attire?
No matter how “casual” the dress code is, guests should never show up to a wedding in jeans, t-shirts, shorts, or sneakers. Dress formally as a sign of deference to the bride and groom. Even if the invitation specifies casual attire, Sabatino advises men to arrive in a suit and tie.
In particular, as dress codes become more and more ambiguous, deciding what to wear to a wedding can be downright difficult. Wedding guests should keep in mind a few basic fashion principles to avoid wardrobe faux pas, regardless of whether their invitation specifies formal, cocktail, festive, or casual attire. No matter what the dress code specifies, here are six things you should never wear to a wedding.
You attend a wedding to honor the couple, says Julie Sabatino, a wedding fashion stylist for The Stylish Bride. That should be evident in the way you look. “Make sure your group respects the occasion and is appropriate. Make the extra effort to ensure you are aware of appropriate and inappropriate attire for a particular ceremony. Avoid being the girl wearing a long ball gown while everyone else is wearing a cocktail dress. Ask a bridesmaid (not the bride) for advice if you’re having trouble understanding what “beachy chic” or “festive casual” mean.
Never try to outdo the bride and groom when dressing for a wedding is one of the most important fashion rules. Do not wear anything that will distract from the bride, such as a sequined ball gown, a sparkling tiara, very high platform heels, or other accessories. Making a strong fashion statement at a wedding is inappropriate.
What should female guests wear to a wedding?
A full-length, formal gown that covers the ankles is required for women to attend. Another excellent choice is a professional pantsuit.
Even though the expression “I have nothing to wear” is fairly common, wedding season makes people shout it from the rooftops. You might attend at least one ceremony every weekend during the wedding season if you’re in your twenties or thirties. Some will be semi-formal, others will be casual, and dress codes are always a possibility. Here are our top dos and don’ts when deciding what to wear as a wedding guest.
Here is a quick list of factors to consider when selecting the ideal attire as a wedding guest, including everything from formal attire etiquette to the weather.
What the couple wants should always be taken into consideration before making any fashion choice, whether the occasion is black tie, semi-formal, casual, or even a costume party.
How should one dress for a nighttime wedding at a yacht club?
Cocktail attire at a yacht club is unquestionably dressier than daytime attire, even though it’s not as formal as black tie. The appropriate attire for an evening event is a full suit or dress slacks with a jacket and tie. Avoid bold colors or prints in favor of neutrals and muted tones. Cached.
You recently received an invitation to your very first yacht club party, which is fortunate for you. The most common response to this is “What on earth do I wear?”. We work with many yacht clubs to make sure their members always look sharp with personalized ties and scarves. Here is some of our fashion advice to help you master yacht club attire and put together a killer look.
There are some items that are simply unacceptable when it comes to yacht club attire, which can vary depending on the club and the time of the event. Always steer clear of the following:
Furthermore, resist the urge to put on an ascot or a jovial captain’s hat. Most people will perceive this as cliche rather than sporty. The best approach to take when creating your dockside outfit is to stick with classic styles, nautical colors, and clever layers. Additionally, you can purchase shirts and ties that are embellished with the club logo from many of the clubs’ shops.
Are tips expected at yacht clubs?
While leaving a tip for the crew is customary, particularly on charter yachts, you shouldn’t anticipate receiving “stacks of cash” on every trip.
As a result of the industry-wide practice of leaving tips for the crew at the conclusion of a yacht vacation, the majority of crew members who work on charter yachts anticipate receiving a sizable gratuity on top of their regular pay.
In an interview with ET, Chief Stewardess Kate Chastain of Below Deck said, “I’ve had charters where we’re anchored in the BVIs, the guests have left, and were eating leftover lobster, drinking leftover Champagne, and counting our stacks of cash.” At that time, I felt quite unique. “.
What do you wear to a yacht club wedding?
It looks like you’ll be fine as long as you can blend in at a cocktail party. You may then include earrings. Pair it with a formal necklace for outfits like this that are far more formal.
What do you wear to an event at the yacht club?
Men should wear slacks, jeans, or shorts during the daytime, and women should wear a skirt, dress slacks, or shorts, along with a top. Except for specific club events and when worn for medical or religious reasons, hats and caps are not permitted.
You must always dress appropriately. Our dress code, a significant tradition at Sarasota Yacht Club, was created to accommodate modern, more laid-back lifestyles while upholding the long-standing standards of excellence for which the club is renowned. Anyone over the age of twelve (12) may use it, including members and visitors.
Most daytime events typically require casual attire. Evening attire takes on a more formal feel. Name tags are encouraged to be worn by members.
In order to make your visit more pleasurable and comfortable for you and your visitors, we hope the following guidelines will be useful. Except for special occasions or functions, the following are the guidelines for appropriate dress: An event’s dress code will be announced or published in Spars and Tacks.
How should I dress for the yacht club?
It accepts fashionable casual attire for lunch, including tidy, clean jeans and shorts. For dinner, guests are expected to step it up by leaving the denim at home and wearing sports coats. Different areas of a club may also have different dress rules. Bars and outdoor decks typically have more relaxed dress codes. Cached.
You’ve never been to a yacht club before, but you’ve been invited to a meal or event there. Suddenly, I started to feel anxious. There are plenty of options for what to wear, and going to a yacht club doesn’t require you to spend a lot of money to blend in. You can really enjoy yourself and have a great time at the club if you follow the advice in this post on yacht club attire.
Check to see if the yacht club you’re going to has a dress code posted online before you even consider what to wear. The majority of clubs have different rules, though. For its dinners, the Nantucket Yacht Club, for instance, requests semi-formal attire. For its dinner dances and balls, men are expected to wear cocktail attire, which may include ties. A little more information is provided by the Hyannis Yacht Club. For lunch, it accepts fashionable casual attire, such as neat, well-kept jeans and shorts. Guests are expected to dress more formally for dinner by forgoing denim and donning sports coats. A club may have different dress codes for various areas. Casual clothing is typically permitted in bars and on outdoor decks.
Eliminating what you shouldn’t wear can occasionally be the simplest way to reduce your options for what to wear. This is only a partial list of how not to arrive at any yacht club unless you want to be turned away or get a lot of disapproving looks. All of the listed guidelines only apply to the club’s interior; rules for the beach and the dock may differ.
What footwear should I wear to the yacht club?
Wear proper footwear, such as closed-toe shoes or sturdy sandals. Although a lot of kids and adults enjoy wearing flip-flops, the yacht club setting might not be the best place for them. Although a bridle bit driver is always appropriate, the boat shoe style is the most popular option here.

The Sailor's Style Guide: How to Dress at a Yacht Club
If you've been invited to a casual yacht club rendezvous, you'll need the right threads to fit in. in this guide, we'll walk you through the yacht club attire you'll need to fit in. hint: you can find the perfect outfit head to toe with castaway.
You've been invited to a meal or event at a local yacht club, but you've never been to one before. Suddenly, the panic sets in. What should you wear? Fortunately, there are lots of options and visiting a yacht club does not mean you have to spend a lot of money just to fit in. This post will give you some pointers on yacht club attire so that you feel neither under nor overdressed, and can really enjoy yourself and have a great time at the club.
Before you even think about what to wear, check to see if the yacht club you're going to has a dress code posted online. Most of them do, and the rules can vary from club to club. The Nantucket Yacht Club , for example, requires semi-formal attire for its dinners and cocktail attire including ties for men during its dinner dances and balls. The Hyannis Yacht Club goes into a little more detail. It accepts stylish casual wear including clean, neat jeans and shorts for lunch. For dinner, guests are expected to step it up by leaving the denim at home and wearing sports coats. Different areas of a club may also have different dress rules. Bars and outdoor decks tend to more lax and allow casual clothing.
Sometimes, the easiest way of narrowing down what to wear is to eliminate what you should not wear. This is just a partial list of how not to show up at any kind of yacht club unless you want to be denied admittance or receive a lot of disapproving glares. All rules listed apply to the inside of the club, and can vary for beach and dock rulings.
Flip Flops or Going Barefoot: This rule applies INSIDE the club, or for any meal time. Most people love the beach, but going barefoot is not only unacceptable, but unhygienic.
You'll want to wear appropriate footwear such as sturdy sandals or closed toe shoes. While a lot of children and adults love their flip-flops, they may be a little too casual for a yacht club atmosphere. The most popular choice here is a boat shoe style but a bridle bit driver is always appropriate - check the latest . The lightly worn leather and pencil-curled laces fit the bill in the cool department.
Torn, Stained, or Worn Clothing: Any attire that is showing signs of wear such as rips, stains that never came out, holes, missing buttons, etc. should be left at home.
Baseball Caps and Other Hats: Most yacht clubs prefer that men remove their caps when inside the venue. Save them for the sailing excursions.
Extra points on the water if you rock the Club’s Burgee on the hat!
Swimwear: Just a no-no. Save it for the boat and the beach. A cover-up can be acceptable for the patio.
Going Shirtless: Nope!
Undershirts as Shirts: See above. You may also want to be careful about choosing a t-shirt, particularly one with graphics, when visiting a yacht club. Most prefer that you wear a collared shirt, even if it's a casual one such as a polo shirt.
Tank tops for men and any tank tops for women that are skimpy and don't hide undergarments should be saved for another occasion.
Women have a lot of options when it comes to visiting a yacht club. Linen and cotton make the perfect summer blouses. A light but structured Sleeveless Top paired with a sweater is perfect for warding off cool sea breezes when you're out on the deck. A polo or collared shirt works well for the yacht club scene as well. You can also consider a dressy blouse that has a little bit of flounce to it. If shorts are allowed for the time and area of the club you're visiting, consider sporting Sailing shorts with a cute anchor embroidery. They're cool, classy, and show off just the right amount of leg. Casual skirts and dresses are perfectly fine as well as long as they're not too short and revealing. If you're attending a party at a yacht club you may need to wear a nice cocktail dress, or a classic Tunic Dress for a day event. Special events such as balls and dinner dances usually specify what is appropriate attire on the invitation.
Don't forget to have fun with accessories! A straw handbag can complete a nautical themed look.
For most casual yacht club occasions, men can't go wrong with a collared shirt and long pants or Cisco Shorts . Pastel and preppy shades such as summer green, hurricane red, and islander blue rule here.
When casual attire is allowed, collared sport or polo shirts are always in fashion. Seersucker and linen shirts are available in several colors and patterns for summer club get-togethers. If jeans are not allowed, seersucker or cotton canvas pants are still casual and comfortable yet dressy enough for all areas of a yacht club. If you really want to show your love of nautical dressing, consider wearing a fun Embroidered Pant !
Or you can opt for solid pants but add some nautical flair with an embroidered belt . Classic summer staples like Seersucker and Madras Patches will make you the talk of the Club, in a good way!
For those chilly sea breezes and evenings, a quarter zip pullover wards off the cool air while keeping you stylish and casual.
It's a good idea to keep a sportcoat and a few ties in your closet just in case the yacht club you're visiting requires it. Opt for a fun all over embroidered jacket, or a Madras Patchwork style to really up your game.
Kids' clothing should conform to the same yacht club rules as established for grown-up guests. If you really want your son to look cute, consider dressing him in the same matching outfit as dad.

How to Get Married on the Water
Expert tips for setting sail to tie the knot.

If you and your partner love being on the water, then hosting your wedding on a boat may be your dream scenario. This is a unique option for those who love sailing or cruising, or simply want the ultimate venue to fit a nautical theme. Not to mention, the photos of open water views with cityscapes or tropical islands in the distance are sure to be stunning. But if you’re thinking of setting sail on open waters for a wedding ceremony, reception, or both, some additional, specific planning is required.
Planning for a wedding on the water not only means working within the restraints of the specific vessel you want, but it also means taking Mother Nature and changing weather conditions into consideration. Here, we consult expert planners to learn tips, tricks, and the most important things to consider before you set sail and tie the knot.
Consider Time, Location, and Weather
Whether you’re choosing to charter a boat, planning a yacht party, or hosting a wedding reception on a cruise ship, time, location, and weather are important factors to consider. “Weather can have a huge impact on a waterfront or boating event and can change the guest experience and comforts quickly,” says Nick and Aleah Valley, owners of Valley & Company Events .
In your planning, be sure to check on where you’ll be leaving from and what the weather may look like that day. “Many coastal areas have zones where gale force winds can appear quickly and unexpectedly. Having a backup plan for wind and chilly temperatures is imperative,” adds the Valleys. “If it's too windy, some boats or yachts can't sail, which could mean your event is docked or canceled completely until conditions improve.”
Meet the Expert
Nick and Aleah Valley are the founders of Valley & Company Events , an event and wedding planning company based in Seattle, Washington.
Boat Options for Getting Married on the Water
Getting married on a boat can come in a variety of different shapes and sizes. Depending on your guest list and wedding vision, one option may be better than the others. Pricing will vary greatly, depending on the size of the boat, the style, and the region where you’re booking. Yacht and charter boat weddings may only require a fee for use of the vessel, while a cruise ship wedding requires paying for the cruise , along with fees specific to your wedding.
Tips for Yacht Weddings
A wedding reception on a yacht provides the ultimate view for a great celebration! You can choose to either host your ceremony elsewhere and then board the boat, or plan for both your ceremony and reception on the water.
To find the ideal yacht for your wedding, think about guest list size first. “Keep in mind that many states have maritime regulations prohibiting the rental of yachts for events or guest counts past a certain number,” says Nick and Aleah Valley. “Contacting the local maritime office is a good place to start for suggestions on how to charter a yacht. They may have recommendations for finding a yacht unless you have your own or have a connection to one.”
Once you know that your guest list count is in line with area regulations for a yacht, it’s crucial to consider space to guest ratio as well. Are there enough restrooms to accommodate your group? Is there enough elbow room to allow for a great guest experience?
You’ll also want to check if the yacht has appropriate kitchen facilities for your culinary team to create the perfect menu for your reception, along with space for other necessary rentals.
Tips for Charter Boat Weddings
If you’re hoping to charter a boat for your wedding, keeping size in mind is crucial here, too. Be sure to choose a boat that can accommodate your guest list and your specific needs. It's also important to double-check that the boat you plan to charter will fit the aesthetic and type of reception you're hoping for.
If you’re chartering a boat, insurance will also be required. “Talk to your insurance carrier about your personal policy and what the needs are to cover the event, the boat owner, and your guests,” says Nick and Aleah Valley.
It’s also important to consider the timing when chartering a boat. “Most charter boats have a very specific timeframe for when they can depart a port or marina, whether it's based on tides, locks, or marina rules, so this can dictate your event timeline,” says Nick and Aleah Valley. They suggest building a buffer into your day-of timeline so guests arrive and board the boat at least 45 minutes before your scheduled departure time. This will give guests time to get settled on the boat, and you can welcome them with happy hour drinks and snacks to kick off the celebration.
Tips for Cruise Weddings
Planning a ceremony or a wedding reception on a cruise ship means you’re on a much bigger boat. Typically, that also means there may be other guests onboard that aren’t part of your wedding. If privacy is important to you, be sure to ask the cruise ship’s planning team what your ceremony or reception space will look like, and what your options are for keeping it private.
Depending on the cruise, you may not be able to get married on open water at all. Legally, you may be required to choose to either celebrate your nuptials before the ship departs, or you can choose to say “I do” at the port of one of the cruise’s destinations. Working with the right planner will ensure you’re following the proper legal guidance for a cruise wedding or cruise wedding reception.
“Keep in mind the guest experience and the logistics of what can take place on a cruise,” suggests Nick and Aleah Valley. It’s important to check if you can have events at your leisure, or if you will have to stick to the cruise ship’s strict timeline and events.
How to Keep Guests Comfortable on the Water
While a boat wedding may be dreamy for you and your partner, especially if you’re used to being on the water, it may be tricky for some of your guests.
“ Seasickness can happen quickly, especially when guests are drinking,” says Nick and Aleah Valley. “Have a solid plan, and if you have an opportunity, pass out seasickness patches to your guests the day before your event so they can be prepared for being on the boat.”
Consider putting together welcome bags that might include bug spray, water bottles, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Another helpful option? Put out a big basket of hats and fans, along with a well-stocked station of snacks and water. It’s important that guests stay hydrated to avoid heat exhaustion.
Questions to Ask Before Booking a Boat for Your Wedding
- Will there be enough space for our guest list?
- Is there air conditioning on board?
- Is there a maintenance crew that can assist with potential mechanical issues?
- What is the galley kitchen’s capacity for creating a meal?
- Is there a refrigerated place to store our cake? Will it fit?
- Can we incorporate our own décor?
- How many life preservers are on board?
- Is there a specific timeline we need to follow?
- What insurance is required for use?
After ironing these questions out, you'll be ready to sail off into the sunset as a married couple!

41 Wedding-Guest Dresses for Every Type of Wedding
It seems to be the summer to get married, if celebrities are any indication: There was Kourtney Kardashian’s D&G-backed Portofino nuptials , Chloe Sevigny’s Connecticut ceremony , and Jennifer Affleck (née Lopez) going the old-fashioned route with a Vegas drive-through . There’s a bona fide wedding boom happening this year, as once-postponed plans now have dates. You might even be sitting on a stack of invitations right now — which inevitably leads to the question of what to wear. To help, we went on the hunt for wedding-guest dresses for almost every type of occasion we could think of. To do so, we considered factors like size range and special design details, along with venue and dress code. Here, you’ll find one for practically any event, from the semi-spontaneous Vegas elopement to the multi-day mini Glastonbury.
For the “resort casual” wedding that’s not actually at a resort
Pair this one-shouldered, cutout number (in that Schiaparelli-esque shocking pink) with a pair of strappy sandals to fit the dress code .
For the wedding at a Punta Cana five-star resort
Just remember to pack your wide-brimmed straw sun hat to get the most of the beach backdrop.
For the park wedding with a well-organized potluck reception
This charming mini has enough of a full skirt for lying on the grass.
For the wedding in a private dining room with only one table
The slip’s easy shape means you’ll be comfortable sitting through dinner and dancing on top of said table at the end of the night.
For your the backyard vow-renewal ceremony
The laid-back occasion calls for a dress that’s equally easygoing.
For the wedding on a Newport Beach yacht
There’s something slightly nautical about the frock’s artful twists on the front and back.
For the wedding that’s on the traditional side
With its sheath silhouette, the dress is as classic as it gets — and comes with a tasteful slit.
For the wedding that’s anything but traditional
Frayed seams give this corseted number a slight edge.
For your friend’s semi-spontaneous Vegas elopement
Even next to a bejeweled Elvis impersonator, the rainbow-hued stars will still be a stunner.
For the wedding at an Atlantic City casino
It’s just flashy enough without going into showgirl territory.
For the black-tie- optional wedding that’s really just black-tie
The white-lined halter neckline makes this dress strikingly similar to the vintage Valentino Julia Roberts wore the night she won her Oscar.
For the (not optional) black-tie wedding
The Barbie -esque magenta will look extra playful against other guests’ muted tones.
For the Hamptons white wedding
The “no white at wedding” guideline isn’t a hard-and-fast rule anymore (at least, not according to the Emily Post Institute ). And when the invite specifically calls for it, this little white dress overlaid with opulent beading will be just the thing.
For the wedding at a greenhouse with no guaranteed air conditioning
Since it’s made completely from cotton, you’ll keep cool in this airy midi.
For the wedding with a jazz three-piece instead of a DJ
Just picture how the pearls will twinkle and twist around.
For the wedding that’s basically a multi-day mini-Glastonbury
Biodegradable glitter (and wellies ) sold separately.
For the wedding with more cowboy boots than high heels
Or add a pair of Docs for a grungier ’fit (and to get through dirt paths).
For the wedding that’s really a second high-school reunion
A capelike neckline makes this cocktail dress look especially sophisticated in an “I have it all together” way.
For the fairycore-inspired wedding in a forest
The pastel purple hits just the right note of whimsical.
For the wedding at a Twin Peaks– style mountain lodge
It has the distinct energy of a secondhand Armani suit — but the “vest” is part of the blazer.
For the wedding with a “Studio 54 on the night of Bianca Jagger’s birthday” vibe
On a light-up dance floor, you’ll fit right in with this combination of Halston-like pleats and metallic threading.
For the family friend’s wedding your parents are hosting at home
The breezy mini features a bouquet’s worth of blossoms.
For the maximalist wedding with centerpieces up to the ceiling
Go all out with this ethereal organza confection.
For wedding at a Myrtle Beach vacation home
The lightweight tie-front dress won’t take up too much valuable luggage space.
For the wedding at a Sonoma estate winery
You won’t have to worry too much about red-wine stains.
For the wedding with lighting reminiscent of an Euphoria episode
This celebratory mini even features explosions of embellishments.
For the wedding with rooftop cocktails in Midtown
Gold plissé will contrast against the silver skyline.
For the post-city-hall brunch party
It’s the exact same shade as a peach bellini.
For the wedding at a (possibly) haunted Victorian mansion
The sweet flocked dots and sheer organza keep it from being too gothic.
For the wedding at a just-renovated farmhouse upstate
Marie Antoinette would have worn this around Petit Trianon.
For the wedding doubling as a grown-up kids’ party (bouncy house included)
So you can jump around without worrying about your skirt flying up in the air.
For the literal big, fat Greek wedding
The red rose embroidery would look especially romantic against the Aegean.
For the wedding at a Portuguese village church
You can pull down the dramatic puff sleeves once the ceremony’s over.
For the wedding at a Tuscan olive grove
Imagine this tangerine color against the sunset. (FYI, Ted Baker was Shiv Roy’s label of choice for her mother’s marriage ceremony .)
For the wedding between two equally obsessive Disney adults
In a sunflower-colored brocade, the Tayla is rather regal.
For the wedding in the Early Renaissance wing of an art museum
Its dreamy, diaphanous skirt reminds us of a Botticelli painting.
For the wedding between two fashion influencers
Don’t forget your tiny Jacquemus .
For your wedding at an oyster bar overlooking the Pacific
The jaunty little knot on the faux wrap is the subtlest salute to all the rope décor.
For a wedding where you’ll dance until sunrise
To help pull you off the all-nighter, this dress features a stretchy spandex and cutout sides for some breathing room.
For the wedding at a summer camp
The elegant firework pattern dresses up this otherwise casual midi.
For the wedding in a garden
It’s the perfect length for frolicking through the flowers.

Guest attire for 5PM yacht wedding
I am attending a 5pm church wedding followed by a reception at a yacht club. The wedding is at the end of August on a Friday night. Do I have to go with black or can I wear color? If black is the best choice, would it be a faux pas to wear the same dress that I wore to the groom’s brother’s wedding 3 years ago?
Rebecca Black, Etiquette By Rebecca
Dear Guest,
The little black dress is just a theme. Just wear the equivalent of the dress. It can definitely have color.
It is not a faux pas and I doubt anyone will remember a dress from 3 years ago. I don’t remember what my husband wore yesterday 🙂
Best wishes,

26 Best Wedding Guest Dress Ideas to Celebrate the Special Day in Style
By Sandy Aziz
Dearly beloved, we’re gathered here today to give you the best wedding guest dress ideas for all your upcoming marriage ceremonies.
With happily ever after season rapidly approaching and multiple save-the-dates cascading in, you may find yourself asking the infamous question: What do I wear? Understandably, even though you’re not a bridesmaid and these are not your nuptials, saying yes to the perfect wedding guest dress (we've got a bunch of cute party dresses and Reformation dress dupes , too!) can still feel like a whole debacle.
The first order of business is understanding the vibe of the wedding. Is this a casual wedding or a formal black-tie affair? You can totally opt for a boho maxi dress or a simple silk midi dress that still gives dressed-up vibes. The follow-up is a seasonal analysis. Is it a spring wedding or a fall wedding? Once you’ve answered these with a simple yes or no, you can narrow down your quest for the best wedding guest dress.
We also did a deep dive on TikTok and polled our peers and friends to understand better what everyone was looking for. The result? Plenty of floral prints, ruffles, loose silhouettes, and sequins! If you're in need of some inspo, peep the options below that will allow you to celebrate with the happy couple while sticking to the dress code and without as many woes.

The back also features a V-neckline, and you don’t have to worry about wrinkles. In other words, this might be the perfect spring wedding guest dress to pack for a destination wedding!

Pretty Garden
Satin Mock Neck Cocktail Maxi Dress
The neckline elevates this satin dress, making it more elegant. Post-wedding, you can rewear this dress as a cocktail dress to other events with ease, especially if you cop it in yellow or brilliant blue.
Best Affordable
Dreamy. That is the only appropriate word to describe this tulle maxi dress. With its cute bows on the shoulders, this dress feels like it is straight from a fairy tale — fitting for attending nuptials!
Abercrombie & Fitch
Best for Spring/Summer
Abercrombie & Fitch
Whether you cop this draped maxi dress in pastel blue, pale green, or sunshine yellow, spring is springing. Not only is the stretchy satin fabric and open back perfect for slightly warmer temperatures, but the dress is also appropriate for a more casual wedding. Given its maxi length and twisted knot waist detail, you could even accessorize this for a more formal spring wedding. We like the versatility!

Sleeveless Tie Neck Pleated Dress
The great thing about DKNY is that it gives subtle corporate chic. This neck-tie sleeveless pleated dress is the perfect way to say you mean business when it comes to celebrating the happy couple. Specifically, the ruffle hem is ripe for movement, and the dress is available in a variety of springtime colors, including, but not limited to, powder, melon, and apple green.
Floral Jacquard Strapless Bustier Midi Dress
No doubt, Lulus has many charming floral dresses. However, this dress undeniably rose to the occasion. Featuring a strapless bustier-style corset, the figure-flattering midi comes with a bouquet of pink shades and a floral jacquard print.
Reformation
Oren Silk Dress
The Reformation
This Reformation pick includes a separate neck scarf that you can style with this dress or even wear it with something else later. The navy silk maxi dress says luxury and is appropriate for either a black-tie wedding or a cocktail event.
Ever Pretty
Best Plus-Size
This mesh dress takes flattery to new levels with its sweetheart neck and off-the-shoulder sleeves. The tulle adds a layer of glam, and you can most definitely wear this to a black-tie wedding. Not to mention, depending on which color you get, you may even be able to rewear it as a bridesmaid later if the opportunity presents itself.
Lupita Draped One-Shoulder Maxi Dress
The stretchy matte fabric makes this dress both fashionable and functional. For those who like to drop it on the dance floor, this dress from The Drop is the one. It even comes in “wild purple.”
Petal & Pup
Rosetta Cutout Cotton & Linen Strapless Dress
Nothing says summer has arrived quite like linen. This dress from Nordstrom is strapless and even features a cut-out, which has also been trending over the last few years.

Long Sleeve Formal Midi Bodycon Dress
Add feathers to the mix! This dress in rust red is the perfect fall wedding guest dress. Its long sleeves and asymmetric hemline with the cross-over slit are the epitome of elegant wedding guest attire.

A wine-colored velvet wrap dress? This dress is textbook winter festive attire. Add that it has long sleeves, is ruched, and includes a deep V-neckline. Yes, please!
Puff Long Sleeve Crewneck Smocked Maxi Dress
This smocked, long-sleeved dress is so easy to wear. You can pair it with chunky statement jewelry or keep it simple with an up-do and pearl earrings. It is versatile and can definitely be reworn for other events.
ASOS Design
Sister Jane Louise Jacquard Mini Dress
Contrary to popular belief, mini-dresses are not only suitable for spring and summer. This Sister Jane Louise jacquard mini in pink and light gold from ASOS is perfect for a winter wedding with tights underneath and closed-toe heels. And the puff sleeves add a little extra festive fun.
Save on the best wedding guest dresses with these ASOS promo codes .
Sarin Mathews
One Shoulder Long Sleeve Cocktail Dress
This one is simple yet stylish with its one shoulder long-sleeve and ruched features. Though it comes in many colors, navy blue is ideal for winter. The above-the-knee slit means you can show a little skin while still staying warm.
Enticing Endeavors Black Jumpsuit
Not in the mood to wear a dress? No problem. This black sleeveless jumpsuit from Lulus is super chic and perfectly suitable as an alternative wedding guest attire. Given its square neckline and lack of sleeves, you can add a blazer over it or a colorful coat if you want to accent the black.
Long Dress With Brallette
Kim Kardashian knows a thing or two about a built-in bralette and maybe that is what partially makes this SKIMS maxi dress one of the viral picks. It also includes a sexy lace neckline and is a true hip-hugger. As is the case with many of the SKIMS line, you can wear this for a more casual event or dress it up and make it more formal.
Save on the best wedding guest dresses with these SKIMS promo codes .
Wrap Tux Midi Dress with Shoulder Pads

Velvet Bardot Midi Dress with Drape Bodice and Fringe Trim
This black velvet bardot midi dress has a fringe trim. We like flirty frills!
Little black dress. Must we say more? This mini-dress is from Reformation and is form-fitting, made of 50% wool and 50% polyester.
ZW Collection Sequin Dress
Voilà ! A sophisticated, but also stand out, sequin dress. This straight-neckline midi dress features a simple slip dress underneath. The sequins are smaller, giving a more subtle sparkle, so as not to outshine the bride, of course.
Adrianna Papell
Best Designer
What is better than a black dress? A beaded black dress! This maxi dress is black-tie wedding-approved with its halter neck, chiffon layer, and beaded detail.

So, you've been invited to a wedding . The dress code is set, and you have no idea where to start, but it's okay - we've all been there. Thankfully in your case, Rolling Stone editors are here to help.
The first step in deciding what you'll wear to their big event is determining the dress code , location , and season. Note - When deciding on color, it's important to consider the location (both geographically and whether or not the event will be held indoors or outdoors) and the overall "theme" of the wedding.
Typically, guests can yield clues from the invitations, wedding websites, what the groomsmen or bridesmaids are wearing, the event venue or even the couples' own interests. If still completely stumped, it never hurts to consult the couple directly, but below we've rounded up an extensive list of stylish dresses that are available to buy online for every dress code, temperature and wedding event theme. Just don't forget to bring along a wedding gift !
What to Wear to a White Tie Wedding
W hite tie is much less commonly requested attire for most modern weddings, this dress code calls for what you'd imagine is worn at a royal wedding or diplomatic affair. Tuxedos are required and expected to include tails and a vest and should be accompanied by formal shoes, white or gray gloves, bowtie and formal shirting. Dresses should be floor length gowns that are accessorized elegantly with jewelry accompanying clutch. A shawl or dress jacket is an optional pairing for formal dresses in colder weather.

What to Wear to a Black Tie Wedding
Black Tie is a step down from White Tie in that tuxedos do not require tails or gloves, and have the option to swap out the White Tie vest for cummerbunds. Dress attire remains relatively the same, however, a jacket or shawl is not necessary and less formal fabrics like silk or linen are acceptable so long as the ankles remain covered. Shorter dresses (long above ankle, midi and cocktail) may be acceptable if fitted in more structured fabrics. If unsure, it's best to consult the bride before making a final dress decision.

Black Tie Optional or Formal is another step towards more casual dressing than the previous Black Tie. For suiting, tuxedos are not required however, a formal dark suit with a white dress shirt paired with a tie or bowtie, is necessary. Dresses can be swapped for pantsuits, formal jumpsuits, long dresses above the ankles or structured cocktail dresses in formal fabrics. These are very minimal differences between the required dress attire for White Tie , Black Tie and Formal or Black Tie Optional dress codes so if unsure of if your dress is an acceptable diversion, we recommend consulting the bride for a gut check.

Semi-Formal / Casual: Semi-Formal or Casual is the broadest of all dress codes. This means that when selecting an outfit, careful attention to location, temperature and venue will be imperative to choosing clothing within the correct palette and theme. Suiting requires dress pants, dress shirt and tie. Matched or unmatched suit jackets are not required but can be worn in lieu of a tie. Dressing is variable and can include any length of less formal dress, structured jumpsuits, or elegant two piece sets. This dress code is most similar to what one might wear to attend church on a normal weekend, not during holidays.

Take It From A Wedding Planner: These Are Nordstrom’s 10 Best Spring Wedding Guest Dresses
Find options for informal, cocktail, and black-tie weddings all under $200.
Southern Living / Daisy Rodriguez
Since elementary school, I’ve always had a fascination with events. So when I got the chance to work with a wedding planner 10 years ago, I jumped at the opportunity to become involved in one of the most monumental days a couple and their families will experience, and I’ve stayed involved in the industry ever since. Other than watching two people get married, one of my absolute favorite things about a celebration is admiring the fashion .
During cocktail hour, I always have a few minutes to admire all of the great wedding guest dresses. Bright colors, lace, florals, and ruffles are some of the details that always catch my eye, and they’re particularly prominent in spring. So, I thought I would share 10 spring wedding guest dresses that you can pick up at Nordstrom for under $200, and I made sure to choose options for casual, cocktail, and black-tie events.
Best Nordstrom Spring Wedding Guest Dresses Under $200
- Sam Edelman Smocked Plissé Midi Dress , $98
- Dress the Population Tiffany One-Shoulder Midi Dress , $103.60 (orig. $148)
- Maggy London Illusion Yoke Crepe Cocktail Dress , $103.60 (orig. $148)
- Dress the Population Catalina Fit & Flare Cocktail Dress , $127.40 (orig. $182)
- Sam Edelman Pleated Asymmetric Hem Satin Dress , $138
- Wayf The Ines V-Neck Tulip Gown , $138
- CeCe Floral Puff Sleeve Linen Blend Dress , $139
- Eliza J Embellished High/Low Chiffon Dress , $188
- Eliza J Ruffle Front Gown , $188
- Dress the Population Alicia Mixed Media Midi Dress , $198
Deciding what to wear to a wedding is almost always the trickiest part, and figuring out the dress code is the first step. Typically, shorter dresses like this Dress the Population Catalina Fit & Flare Cocktail Dress are great choices for more informal fetes, while midi-length frocks like this Dress the Population Alicia Mixed Media Midi Dress are meant for cocktail receptions. If black-tie is on the invitation, stick to long gowns, like this Eliza J Embellished High/Low Chiffon Dress . Of course, there are many more options to shop below, so keep reading while stock and sizes are available.
Sam Edelman Smocked Plissé Midi Dress
The pleats on this Sam Edelman dress make it an instant classic that you can wear for years, and you can choose from black, navy, turquoise, coral, and hot pink in sizes 0 to 14. Thanks to the midi length, high neckline, and smocked waist detail, I think it’s best to wear this style to informal or cocktail weddings. The polyester-like dress is fully lined, and it has a hook and eye closure in the back. To keep wearing this dress after the wedding day, add a cardigan or a blazer for a more business-friendly look.
Dress the Population Tiffany One-Shoulder Midi Dress
When you’re choosing a dress for a cocktail dress code, sticking to a midi-length is one great tip to ensure that your dress is formal enough but not too over the top. And this one-shoulder dress definitely fits the bill. It has the suggested midi length, and it feels more elegant thanks to its one-shoulder style and modern bow details. Plus, the dress has another great benefit: It’s machine washable. The light blue (Sky) is my favorite for a spring wedding, but it’s also available in 13 other colors, too (the off-white is perfect for a bride to wear to a dressier engagement party, bridal shower, or rehearsal dinner). Shop it in sizes XXS to XXL.
Maggy London Illusion Yoke Crepe Cocktail Dress
Although spring is a time for pastels and even bright colors, you can never go wrong with a classic black dress for a cocktail wedding dress code—and this crepe dress is one you shouldn’t miss. It has short sleeves and a back-zip closure, and the illusion jewel neckline that dips into a beautiful V is my favorite aspect of this dress. It’s only available in black, but it’s the only color that truly suits this timeless style. One shopper who “received no less than six compliments on the dress,” said, “It’s amazing… You will [have] something to wear to every event.”
Dress the Population Catalina Fit & Flare Cocktail Dress
This Dress the Population machine-washable dress is one of the most versatile styles that I found, and many shoppers say it’s flattering. It’s made from a comfy crepe fabric that’s designed to “swing and sway” as you move, and it even has pockets. You’ll also find a plunging V-neckline and a hidden zip closure in the back of the dress, which you can shop in sizes XXS to XXL in 14 colors that range from bright shades like Rouge, Bright Fuschia, and Poppy to timeless options like black and navy. You’ll also notice that the dress is available in off-white, which is great news for brides who are shopping for pre-wedding events. Pair this style with sandals for an informal wedding, or dress it up with heels or wedges for a cocktail spring wedding.
Sam Edelman Pleated Asymmetric Hem Satin Dress
Out of the hundreds of spring wedding guest dresses that I found online at Nordstrom, this asymmetric pleated style is the one that stood out the most for cocktail attire. It’s available in light blue (Glacier), black, navy, and hot pink in sizes 0 to 14. It’s sleeveless, which means it will keep you cool even during a warmer outdoor ceremony and cocktail hour, and the asymmetrical pleats turn it into a faux wrap dress. It’s made from polyester that’s designed to look and feel like satin, which makes it even more luxurious, and just like Nordstrom suggests, it’s best to pair this dress with strappy heels .
Wayf The Ines V-Neck Tulip Gown
The key to finding a black-tie wedding guest dress is to stick to floor-length options. Although the length is important, that doesn’t mean you have to shy away from color. In fact, the kelly green shade of this dress that you can pick up in XS to XL is my favorite thing about it. Other than the fun shade, the flattering V-neckline, tulip skirt, and slight pleats at the waist are also worth highlighting about this style. Plus, you won’t have to worry about getting the straps altered because they’re adjustable to allow you to find your perfect fit on your own.
CeCe Floral Puff Sleeve Linen Blend Dress
A spring wedding wouldn’t be complete without a few floral dress sightings, and I can’t stop thinking about this CeCe dress that you can shop in sizes XS to XL. Because it’s made from a linen-blend (55 percent linen and 45 percent rayon), I would keep this dress on your list for less formal outdoor weddings and cocktail-style receptions. The puff sleeves definitely add interest, and so does the V-neckline, floral pattern, adjustable tie at the waist, and ruffle midi-length hem. This dress simply slips over your head for ease, and it’s even machine washable (but you’ll want to line-dry it). Keep in mind that this style is also a perfect one to wear to any pre-wedding events that you’re invited to, especially bridal showers and rehearsal dinners.
Eliza J Embellished High/Low Chiffon Dress
When you’re shopping for black-tie wedding guest dresses, don’t rule out high/low hemlines—they’re some of the most popular at almost every formal celebration that I plan. This chiffon gown is made from 100 percent polyester, and it flows beautifully. You’ll also find that the sleeveless style has a V-neckline, full lining, and a hidden zippered closure in the back. My favorite detail, however, is the beading embellishment at the waist because it instantly dresses it up even more. Shop this dress in sizes 2 to 18, and add strappy heels, simple jewelry, and a clutch to complete your fun wedding-ready look.
Eliza J Ruffle Front Gown
Ruffles are my favorite dress detail, so this Eliza J black-tie wedding guest gown immediately caught my attention. It’s available in classic shades like black and navy, and you can also pick it up in hunter green, blue (pictured above), wine, and fuschia in sizes 0 to 18. The bateau neckline and slight back V create an elegant look, while the ruffles that stream down the waist to the side slit help it stand out. The sleeveless dress is fully lined and made from 88 percent polyester and 12 percent spandex, so it will move with you whether you’re mingling or out on the dance floor.
Dress the Population Alicia Mixed Media Midi Dress
The Dress the Population Alicia Mixed Media Midi Dress immediately made me think of ballet, and I love it for that exact reason. The combination of the crepe bodice and chiffon skirt makes this monochromatic dress feel more special for a cocktail attire wedding, and the scalloped lace hem is the perfect finishing touch. A deep V-neckline, hidden back zipper, and full lining help to complete the style, which is even machine washable. Plan to order this ballet-like dress in 15 colors, including black, off-white (perfect for brides), electric blue, blush, lavender, and dark magenta in sizes XXS to XXL, but realize that Nordstrom does recommend sizing up if you’re in between sizes. Keep this dress on hand for summer weddings, too, as one shopper writes, “It was great for a wedding on the hottest day of the year. Really fun to dance in.”

Party Dresses
There is nothing quite like getting dressed up for a party. When you are at a party, you always look your absolute best and you probably know that no matter what you are going to enjoy yourself. It is important to find party dresses that really fit your needs and really make you look spectacular at the same time.
Finding the Perfect Party Dress
In order to find the best party dresses, there are a few things that you are going to have to think about. These will help you be sure that you've found the right party dresses for your occasion.
First of all, it is important to think about the party and the actual atmosphere that you are going to be a part of. Saying that you are looking for a party dress isn't always all that you need, simply because of the vast differences between types of parties. There are lots of different get-together occasions that might be considered parties, so before you choose party dresses, ask yourself some questions.
Party Formality
The formality of the party is the first thing to keep in mind. A party that is celebrating someone's wedding is going to be much more formal than a party celebrating an afternoon graduation from high school. A party that celebrates a friend's birthday out at a bar is a much different party from the one that celebrates your grandmother's birthday in her dining room. Therefore, the formality of the party is the first thing to figure out before you begin to find party dresses.
For very formal parties, you are going to want to look at dresses that are also quite formal – long dresses that don't show as much skin are often more formal than others, although you can find very formal dresses that are strapless. The form is what is important. For very formal occasions, party dresses should be long, flowing, and high class. However, there are plenty of great non-formal party dresses for parties are more casual.
For the most casual parties, like afternoon garden parties or informal gatherings, you can base your dress selection on what the weather is like. An afternoon garden party in the summer is a great time to wear that new sundress; however, a birthday party in February might be that great occasion to wear the long dress with sleeves. No matter what, if you first look at the formality of the party, and then where the party will be held, you'll be able to come to great conclusions.
Party Dress Rules
There are a few rules that you should follow when you are choosing party dresses so that you can be sure you have chosen the right dress. First of all, for party dresses in the summer you'll want to remember that you can wear white before Labor Day (as long as you aren't wearing white to a wedding). For wedding party dresses, you'll want to be more formal, and you'll want to avoid wearing white because that is the color that the bride will traditionally be wearing. Therefore, avoid white and be sure that you are dressing to the formality of the wedding you are attending.
For garden parties and other outdoor parties, it is a good idea to think about summery short dresses. Dresses like knee-length or tea-length sundresses can be great for this type of party. You'll be able to find that with the right types of dress, you’ll find the right types of accessories.
Using accessories for your party dresses is another thing entirely, and you'll want to be sure that you think carefully about it before you do so. For one thing, the jewelry that you wear is going to be very important because it will help you decide which dresses are going to be more formal and which are going to be more casual. With more formal dresses, you'll want to use more formal jewelry, but you can take a formal dress and make it less formal by adding fun and funky jewelry to it. You can also take a plain and simple dress and make it more formal by adding beautiful jewelry to it. No matter what you might be considering, you'll be able to find that perfect type of dress for your needs when it comes to party dresses.
After you have a good idea of the types of dresses that you are looking for, finding exactly what you need is going to end up being easier than ever. With the right party dresses, you'll be on the right track to figuring out exactly who you are and what you want to look like, at every occasion. As long as you plan ahead, finding party dresses is easy and is something that you can do on your own, very quickly
