The story of classic Riva yachts go right back to 1842 , when a young Pietro Riva began repairing and building yachts on Lake Iseo in northern Italy. But it was his great-grandson, the legendary  Carlo Riva , who had the vision to create a range of wooden-hulled speedboats that were to become the epitome of the jet-set era of the 1950s and 1960s.

Carlo Riva was inspired by the products of the American yacht builder Chris-Craft, for which he was an agent, and he used Chris-Craft and Chrysler engines in his classic Riva yachts. We trace the history of the most popular classic Rivas, and round up a few of the most memorable Rivas of all time…

This sporty Riva classic yacht was equally well suited for a day of sunbathing or watersports.

Featuring a large, sunken sun deck and often seen towing water-skiers, this sporty Riva classic yacht was equally well suited for a day of sunbathing or watersports. The Riva Florida is propelled by a single engine and ranged from 5.59 metres to 6.27 metres in her Super Florida size. Though she was built in Italy, like her brethren, her sun-loving demeanour earned her the moniker of the US “Sunshine State” and was named after Florida as at the time it was the place most closely linked with the sport of waterskiing. In her time in build, 426 Florida Rivas were delivered, including 711 of the bigger and more powerful Super Florida models.

Only one left from 40 boats

Corsaro (1946-55): Only one yacht is thought to survive from the 40-strong pack of the first range of classic Riva yachts. The two-seater Corsaro Riva series was designed by Carlo Riva, based on the AR Sport motor boat. Production started on 1950, and the series ranged in length from 4.8 to 5.65 metres LOA and she was fitted with various engines.

Perhaps the best-known by sight classic Riva yacht.

Certainly one of the most popular, is the Ariston, which was built for nearly 25 years. The single-engine Ariston measures 6.7 meters and features a distinctive rounded stern and wooden sax board. There were 823 Riva Ariston yachts built and another 189 Super Aristons delivered.

The first twin-engine classic Riva yacht

the-tritone-is-one-of-the-most-classic-riva-speedboats

The first twin-engine classic range Riva yacht was the Tritone, in build from 1950-1966. While 221 of the standard Tritone version were delivered, far fewer of the far more desired Super Tritone came into being, with only 21 hitting the water. At nearly eight metres LOA, the Super Tritone was a long, powerful version of Riva’s Tritone, its biggest thus far. The Super Tritone is valued at €200,000-€300,000.

The rarest Riva speedboat

ribot-iii-is-one-of-the-rarest-riva-speedboats

Riva owners may commonly have been rich and famous, but it was rare to get special treatment; however, Carlo Riva broke his rule in the case of the Como industrialist, champion sailor and Riva patron, Achille Roncoroni. In 1960, Roncoroni persuaded the company to build him a one-off version of the Tritone Special model classic Riva yacht. He wanted the best, fastest and largest Riva ever. What he got was an 8.3 metre wood-clad wonder powered by two high-performance, marinised Cadillac Eldorado V8 engines, each producing 325hp to push the boat to a stunning 60mph. The unique interior had red, white and blue front seats that could be laid flat to let occupants sunbathe away from prying eyes. The dashboard featured sparkling, chrome bezel instruments befitting the Cadillac-powered Special.

Roncoroni used the boat,  Ribot III , mostly on Como, and kept her until 1970 before selling her on to the second owner who has owned this classic Riva ever since. And, true to his word, Carlo Riva ensured  Ribot III  remained a one-off, even turning down a request for a similar craft from King Hussein of Jordan.

The most expensive classic Riva yacht

the-riva-aquarama-is-one-of-the-worlds-most-expensive-classic-speedboats

The original Riva Aquarama line was delivered from 1962 to 1972. This included first classic Riva Aquarama yacht, of which 288 were sold, and the Super Aquarama, with 203 splashing. The Aquarama Special then emerged, running from 1972 to 1996 with 278 boats built.

The most expensive classic Riva ever built was probably an Aquarama, which crossed the block at Mecum Auctions in Kissimmee, Florida, back in 2011, for an impressive $975,000. Bidders from around the world competed to own the boat, which was considered extra special, because it was the last of the original, wooden-hulled Rivas to be sold to the public. Hull No 774 was completed in 1996 and delivered new to the founding family of the giant Sony Corporation on 23 December 1998.

Surely the ultimate Christmas present, it was one of six “End of the Era” commemorative editions produced. Its owners, however, clocked up fewer than 20 hours aboard her in 12 years, with their most ambitious voyage being a return trip across Lake Garda for lunch.

The celebrity’s choice of Riva

white riva yacht

The Riva Junior was the late 1960s replacement for the basic Riva Florida. At 5.6 metres, the classic Riva yacht model Junior found fame as the choice of the celebrity set such as Brigitte Bardot and Peter Sellers. The Riva Junior is valued at €30,000-€40,000.

The modern classic Riva speedboat

white riva yacht

Despite the move into fibreglass — and now superyacht-size yachts even — Riva’s current owner, the Ferretti Group, is still passionate about preserving the essence of classic Riva yachts in its new runabouts. In 2001, a year after Ferretti Group purchased Riva, the Aquariva was launched. This 11-metre yacht was specifically designed as a successor to the inimitable Aquarama. Though built in GRP, her sweet exterior lines and wood detail harken back to the days of a bygone era when the first classic Rivas plied the waters.

The newest Riva speedboat

the-rivamare-super-yacht-tender-was-designed-by-ferretti-group-and-officina-italiana

Launched in June 2016, the Rivamare is the newest addition to the Riva collection. Despite her effortlessly classic styling, the 11.88 meter Rivamare is packed with modern technology, such as underwater lighting, air conditioning, an electro-hydraulic bimini shade and a Seakeeper NG5 stabilizer.

Riva Yachts

Nothing else, discover riva, where timeless elegance meets innovation.

The Riva shipyard was established in 1842 on Lake Iseo in Sarnico in Italy. A devastating storm severely damaged a large number of boats of local fishermen and prompted the young and newly-arrived boat builder Pietro Riva to offer help, working wonders in rebuilding and repairing most of the boats.

This was the beginning of the Riva Yachts legend and that of its founder. The first boats, which were characterized by style and personality, were developed and the brand quickly gained respect and recognition. Between 1920 and 1930, Serafino Riva, Pietro’s grandson, focused on power boating and produced racing boats that won prizes in national and international competitions.

1949 Serafino´s oldest son, Carlo Riva, took over the shipyard and started to build yachts in reference to American Chris Craft open style yachts. Carlo was driven by boundless passion for boats and his family business since he was a child. Riva by then had become the synonym of elegance, status and perfection and its unique yachts an object of desire for aristocrats and celebrities.

In September 1969 Carlo Riva sold the shipyard, maintaining his role of general manager from which he resigned in 1971, putting in place his brother-in-law, Gino Gervasoni. In 2000 the Italian yacht builder Ferretti Group took over Riva, carrying on the legacy of Pietro Riva following his vision.

The classic Riva Yachts consisted of the elegant wooden hull with seamless, deep red mahogany planking. Plenty of chrome, panoramic windows, a classic dashboard with white steering wheel, white leather armchairs and a padded reclining area are classic design features. Today, Riva continues to offer high-quality pleasure crafts and luxury yachts in various sizes with hulls made from fiberglass.

Wild One: The 30m Riva superyacht with serious style

Moored at the Yacht Club de Monaco during the Formula One Grand Prix , Wild One , the second Riva 100 Corsaro, seems to be in the right place at the right time. The svelte, sporty looking new flagship of the Riva semi-custom series fits right in against the backdrop of the Côte d’Azur’s most famous automotive event.

It is difficult to ignore the design paternity of this new 29.9 metre Riva. The Italian shipyard worked closely with Officina Italiana Design , the studio founded by Mauro Micheli and Sergio Beretta, which designed modern incarnations of its famous dayboats including the Aquariva 33, Rivarama 44, Duchessa 92 and the Domino 86 .

The Corsaro is a new series but it has the brand DNA of elegance and simplicity. “The main starting point was the exterior design, the yacht from the profile,” says Giordano Pellacani, head of sales and marketing at Riva. “It took almost six months to find the right lines.” Wild One ’s profile is a succession of sleek lines emphasised by the grey, black, glass and carbon of the hull and superstructure. This is a sporty motor yacht, a proud successor to the Duchessa 92 series.

Ferretti Group has dedicated a team of 30 to the production of this tailor-made model. The Riva 100 Corsaro is produced only at the La Spezia facility at the moment, with an annual capacity of seven units. “The first six hulls are already sold to clients from Asia, the Middle East and Europe,” says Pellacani. “The next units available are scheduled for mid-2018.”

Even though the 100 Corsaro is a semi-custom yacht, Riva offers a high level of quality and customisation in its construction. For example, the series boasts a gangway designed to client wishes: on Wild One , it is clad entirely in teak, with stainless steel handrails on both sides. It is beautiful, simple and efficient — as is every detail on board.

From here, the aft deck offers a large dining area protected from the sun and wind. A sliding glass door accesses the saloon, which boasts huge windows, as well as a large white L-shaped sofa by Minotti and two red Poltrona Frau chairs. “They were chosen by the owners,” says Pellacani, as were many other details including the walnut wood, black leather and the matt rendering of the ceilings.

Wild One ’s interior, also by Officina Italiana Design, echoes Riva’s heritage again with a mix of wood, leather and stainless steel. “We try to keep it as simple as possible,” says Pellacani, “but we want to let them choose things that are very personal.” Standard colours are soft and timeless, but a large range of furniture, woods, leather, carpets and marbles is available for clients who want to customise details with the help of the in-house designers.

A comfortable dining area follows the saloon, with a glass table by Acerbis International and white chairs by Poltrona Frau for eight guests, and a floor in a light marble from Calacatta Vagli Rosato. Again, clients could adapt this space to their taste, for example with sliding glass doors on to balconies.

All around storage is hidden into Wild One ’s décor. There are similarly clever touches everywhere — USB plugs all over the yacht, and access to the lobby via a mirror door that, when closed, gives a sensation of depth to the dining area, and when open seems to disappear against the wall.

Further forward, the two possible layouts for this yacht are most apparent. One for the Asian market features a full-beam media room on the main deck and three double cabins on the lower deck, including a full-beam master suite .

This was the case for the first Riva 100 Corsaro, Bernardette , which was launched at the end of 2016 and recently delivered to Hong Kong. Wild One , in contrast, has a five-cabin layout with a full-beam master on the main deck. This is a first for a Riva, and the result is a large cabin with a walk-in closet, large windows with opening portholes for fresh air and a bright full-beam bathroom with Magic Brown marble and a large shower.

Four cabins welcome the other guests on the lower deck, with large windows and bathrooms in Amani Brown marble. These cabins feel larger than their true dimensions. “The genius of Mauro Micheli is to add mirrors to give deepness,” says Pellacani.

Back on the main deck, the galley on the forward starboard side is generously sized, entirely white and fully equipped with Miele appliances. A small informal dining area here could be used by guests, but also as a mess for the crew. In a corner, a superyacht staircase gives access to the crew quarters below, composed of three cabins for five and a laundry area. Up top, the 4.2 metre curved windows of the voluminous raised pilothouse afford the captain spectacular views forward, despite the yacht’s sporty profile.

On the technical side, Wild One is equipped with the standard engines — twin 1,792kW MTU 16V 2000 M93s giving a top speed of 26.5 knots, and a range of 310 nautical miles at 23 knots. But longer cruises are on the cards as her consumption reaches only 100 litres per hour at 11.5 knots. Another engine option, used on the first hull, gives a top speed of 28 knots and a range of 300 nautical miles at 24 knots.

As far as you can get from the engine room in every sense, Wild One ’s superyacht sundeck is large for a 30 metre, and teak, carbon and stainless steel give it a sporty feeling. It is largely covered by a hardtop and a second helm station is forward to starboard (an optional third one to port is possible) with customised seats on both sides for the captain and guests.

Just behind, and still protected by the hardtop, is a bar and large dining area for eight. Its table is in steel and teak and the owners have chosen chairs by Dedon to complete the corner. The aft part of the deck is a flexible area protected by sunshades with sofas and sunbeds by Paola Lenti.

Other exterior areas include a foredeck lounge, which can also be protected by sunshades, and at the aft end of the boat a large bathing platform, which can be lowered into the water. The garage here houses a tender of up to 4.5 metres and has enough space for all the usual toys.

But it’s the details that make Wild One stand out: the quality of the finish, with the insides of storage spaces and the engine room door treated as carefully as visible spaces. Or the beach club shower, astutely hidden in one of the handrails. With so much to admire, the Formula One racing cars whizz by in more ways than one.

Riva 82’ Diva: the flybridge that makes yachting divine.

The new Riva yacht premiered at the Cannes Yachting Festival revolutionizes onboard spaces with a new concept of interior and exterior.     La Spezia, 19th September, 2023 – Enchanting and exclusive even in her name, Riva 82’ Diva stole the show at the 2023 Cannes Yachting Festival with a stunning world preview that had everyone gasping in admiration. Bewitchingly beautiful and innovative, she rounds off the already sumptuous range of Riva flybridge yachts by adding a new dimension, not only in terms of length but also of a new concept of interior and exterior spaces. With a length overall of 25.29 m and a maximum beam of 6.08 m, Riva 82’ Diva features restyled interiors and enhanced outdoor liveability, achieving a perfect equilibrium of functionality, comfort and design. Like its predecessors, this new Riva success is penned by Mauro Micheli and Sergio Beretta , founders of Officina Italiana Design , working in partnership with the Strategic Product Committee led by Piero Ferrari and the Ferretti Group Engineering Department. The agile beauty of Riva 82’ Diva is simply unique. The unmistakable features of her predecessors – such as the superstructure’s low and sporty silhouette, the distinctive shape of the forward windshield and the gleaming stainless steel detailing – work with innovative new solutions like the higher and safer side gunwales with painted composite profiles instead of traditional steel handrails. The real stars of Riva 82’ Diva are outdoor areas of unprecedented size in this category. These generous spaces designed to put guests in close contact with the sea offer a yachting experience that takes conviviality and relaxation to the next level. The 40-square-metre flybridge, one of the most generous on a yacht this size , is designed to give each living area its own dedicated space. In the centre, the lounge with a dinette and a large bar unit, personalized according to the owner’s tastes, is protected by a carbon fibre hard top with glass panels . The sun pad forward and another lounging and sunbathing area aft can also be furnished as desired by the owner. At the forward end of the flybridge is also the second pilot station. The boat’s main attraction though is aft on the main deck : a spacious and innovative beach club featuring two large bulwarks (1.6 m) that swing down to create lateral terraces. This new solution for Riva increases the area’s width by over 3 metres and offers endless opportunities for fun and relaxation. There’s a large sun pad (over 2.5m x 2m) in the centre of the beach club and underneath it a garage that can accommodate a jet tender of up to 3.95 m . Moving towards the centre of the yacht, the raised cockpit fitted with facing sea-view sofas provides a living area of nearly 35 square metres and unprecedented comfort. Forward, guests can relax in a large living area fitted with a forward-facing sofa and sun pad, under which the mooring gear is stored. Riva 82’ Diva’s interiors are in classic Riva style . They feature highly polished furnishings and contrasting pale and dark colours, as well as introducing new solutions that achieve a perfect blend of design and comfort. Italian walnut or glossy chocolate wenge are the signature wood that set the style of the yacht’s interior, paired with a light-coloured carpet and ceilings clad in white fabric that contrast with the glossy black lacquered furnishings and the black leather, a stand-out decorative feature of the yacht also found in the night area . In the lounge, the living and dining areas are optically separated by being at different heights, creating a sense of intimacy without actually dividing the two spaces: the former is at cockpit level on entering the lounge , while the latter is further forward in a raised panoramic space . Even the stair well connecting to the flybridge is part of the decor thanks to glass walls that dissolve the visual barrier between interior and exterior. The galley at the forward end of the main deck is designed with a sliding window that either closes it off from or opens it out onto the dining area, creating a seamless space. The galley provides direct access to the helm station and the port-side external walkway leading to the forward lounge area. There are four cabins on the lower deck , all with en suite private bathrooms featuring Corian or Statuarietto marble tops: the full-beam owner’s cabin astern, the VIP cabin forward, flooded with light through the skylight formed by the glass floor of the walkway to the forward lounge area, and two double cabins, providing accommodation for a total of eight guests. The guest cabins are all decorated with signature Riva features plus novel leather elements like the bed headboards, creating an elegant contrast of textures. The crew quarters - two separate cabins with a total of three beds, a bathroom and a laundry station - are amidships and accessed via a dedicated walkway on the side of the superstructure to guarantee complete privacy for both the owner and guests. The helm station , accessed directly from the galley on the main deck, is designed for optimum visibility and functionality , with a sliding glass partition that gives the captain an excellent view out over the starboard walkway. Blinds can be installed inside the windshield for an even more comfortable onboard experience. The helm station also has an adjustable pilot chair, a feature usually found on larger yachts. Ergonomic and elegant, it features an electro-hydraulic steering system and throttles by Xenta , plus a Simrad navigation system that integrates onboard monitoring with navigation and manoeuvring controls managed via three 16-inch monitors as standard, 19-inch monitors optional . Riva 82’ Diva is also fitted with Humphree dynamic trim interceptors and, optionally, Seakeepers and Sleipner fins to minimize rolling both at anchor and under way. On the new Riva 82’ Diva , the owner can decide whether to install a pair of MAN V12 1800 engines for a top speed of 29 knots and a cruising speed of 26 or two MAN V12 1900 engines that drive the yacht to a top speed of 31 knots and a cruising speed of 27 knots (provisional data).

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

white riva yacht

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

white riva yacht

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

white riva yacht

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

white riva yacht

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

white riva yacht

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

white riva yacht

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

white riva yacht

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

White City and Boulevard Ring in Moscow

If you already had your Red Square tour and looking for non-touristy Moscow, off the beaten path and local gems of Moscow, then it’s time for “the Third Circle” or Boulevard Ring in Moscow. Let’s leave Kremlin and Kitay Gorod fortresses and head to more local, authentic part of Moscow – the White City.

What is White City?

The White City of Moscow was a historical area between the walls of the Kremlin & Kitay Gorod and the third defensive ring which was situated at the site of the modern Boulevard Ring.

It was the third fortification of Moscow after Kremlin and Kitay Gorod, and included areas such as Zaneglimene, Kuchkovo field and Kulishki.

By the way, for “white” experience try white nights in the Capital of the North on our summer tours of St Petersburg .

Moscow history

White City of Moscow. Photo by yaroslavova.ru

Origin of the name White City

One version of the origin of the name “White City” is that those nobles didn’t pay any land taxes, so their lands were called “white”, in contrast to the “black” lands of artisans and merchants.

Another version is more prosaic: the walls of the White City were built of limestone.

White City had some other names: Tsarev City or Tsar-Grad (City of the Tsar). It was where the nobility and court officials settled, and the tsar often visited this neighborhood.

History of the White City of Moscow

In the 15 th century the territory of the White City was full of blooming gardens, and that gave the name to Starosadsky (Old Gardens) lane.

Till the middle of the XVI century the line of the Boulevard Ring was an earthen embankment, covered with turf and ground for greater strength and constructed as a fortification to protect the city from the raids.

However, the defensive structure did a bad job of protecting citizens. In 1571 wooden buildings were completely burned after the raid of Davlet Giray.

Beautiful start

During the reign of Tsar Fedor Ioanovich it was decided to put the stone walls, and in 1585 the first work began here.

The building was called the “White City” because “City” at the time was the name for the settlement itself.

Not yet completed, the new frontier helped to prevent an attack on Moscow. This happened in 1591, when troops of the Crimean Horde with the Khan Kazi Giray did not dare to storm the formidable wall and had to retreat.

The construction work was completed by 1593.

Moscow in Old Times

Eartnern City and White City of Moscow

Pride of Moscow

The White City was not only an important defensive (one of the most powerful and reliable in Europe), but also an architectural masterpiece, which decorated ancient Moscow.

The wall of the White City had 27 towers, ten of which had the gates at the intersections with the streets: Trehsvyatskie, Chertolskaya (Prechistenskie) Arbat, Nikita, Tver, Peter Sretensky, Myasnitskaya, Pokrovsky, Yauzskie and Vasilevsky. The total length of the walls of the White City was 10 kilometers with the height  of 10 meters and the width of 4-6 meters.

Old photo of Old Moscow

White City of Moscow.

Tragic turn

During the Time of Troubles the fortification was severely damaged, and by the middle of the XVIII century it completely lost its defensive significance: the gate was no longer guarded and was not locked at night.

Muscovites  started taking away the bricks of the walls for their needs, and in 1760 the authorities allowed to use the materials for urban buildings. The house of Governor-General of Moscow on Tverskaya Street (the present building of the Moscow City Hall) was built exactly from the materials of the White City fortification.

No happy ending

In June 1774 it was decided to completely dismantle the walls of the White City.

Noticeably dilapidated structure gradually began to disassemble, and in its place were planted alleys as had long been fashionable in Europe. Funny enough – the word “boulevard” in a literal translation from French means “fortification”.

Yes to Happy Beginning – New historical sight of Moscow

It was time for the White City to give way to the Boulevard Ring.

Boulevard Ring is a continuous chain of squares and boulevards in the city center. But actually, it does not physically form a closed circle.

The length of the ring is more than 9 km.

Boulevards of Moscow

The famous Boulevard Ring is formed by ten boulevards and is shaped like a horseshoe leading to the embankment of the Moscow River.

The first Moscow boulevard was Tverskoy, which became the founder of the Boulevard Ring in 1796. Tverskoy boulevard is also the longest of all the streets that make up the Boulevard Ring – it stretches for 857 meters. The widest of these boulevards is Strastnoy, or “Holy” in English (123 meters), the shortest was Sretensky, or “Candlemas” (214 meters), and the youngest – Pokrovsky Boulevard, which appeared in Moscow in 1891, almost one hundred years after the first one.

History of the Boulevard Ring of Moscow

In 1880 Boulevard Ring got its first tram route – the legendary “A”, which is called “Annushka”. Nowadays “Anna” covers all the Ring in about an hour.

Boulevard Ring survived the barricades of 1901 and 1905, and the revolution of 1917. During the years of the Great Patriotic war – WWII –   the Boulevard turned into its former defensive role and got occupied with anti-aircraft guns and air defense balloons.

Soviet time in Moscow

Immediately after the war boulevards again became a favorite place for walking.  4000 trees and 130,000 shrubs were planted along the Boulevard Ring. To celebrate the 800th anniversary of Moscow, the Ring was adorned with a new patterned iron barrier and wooden sofas. In 1978, the Boulevard Ring was declared a monument of landscape art, and has been constantly improved since then.

Off the beaten path Moscow

Ideal idea for a  moscow city tour ..

If you stroll through this historic boulevards of Moscow, you will see a lot of interesting, original, very local places and buildings that would never discover on a typical Moscow tour or read in a typical guide book.

In the old days Tverskoy Boulevard was a favorite walking place of aristocrats and the ordinary people were not allowed to walk here. Tverskoy preserved the 19th-century mansion, where lived outstanding personalities of a bygone era: Alexander Pushkin, Alexander Griboedov, Alexander Herzen, Nickolay Ogarev and others. Bulgakov included a lot of places from Tverskoy Boulevard in his novel ” Master and Margarita.” Here are also located the mansions of professor Nickolay Sklifosovsky and prominent Russian actress Maria Yermolova.

No less interesting is the history and architecture of yet another boulevard of Moscow – Gogolevsky Boulevard. Almost every building on Gogolevsky Boulevard  is a monument of architecture that keeps the memory of many famous figures of the past. For example, the building of the current Chess Club once was the center of musical life in Moscow, where you could meet Feodor Chaliapin, Sergey Rachmaninoff, Alexander Glazunov.

Every boulevard has its own manners

Leo Tolstoy shared his memories of different culture and nature of Moscow boulevards. Thus, on Prechistensky Boulevard he could feel free, relax, talk Russian and call his sister simply “Masha” (typical Russian name). On Nikitsky boulevard he used French, demonstrated refined manners, and his sister had the name “Marie”. Finally, on Tverskoy boulevard he used to prim, stood on ceremony with accented stiffness, spoke English and called his sister “Mary.”

In 1845 Vissarion Belinsky called Boulevard zone of Moscow “the best jewelry that St Petersburg has every right to be jealous of”.

During the 20th century Moscow got 20 new boulevards, located outside the Ring, which is residential area, and where tourists give way to locals.
