Luxury Yacht Rental in South Korea
Luxury yacht charter guide to south korea.
Gorgeous grace awaits you on the refined shores of South Korea, where endearing hospitality, stunning landscapes, and a soft and beautiful culture welcomes you into a whole new world. Nicknamed the Land of Morning Calm, serenity surrounds South Korea and seeps into everything you do, especially when sailing along the coast to remote sea strewn islands or padding through the green rice fields that etch out the countryside. Even though South Korea seems calm and quiet on the surface, scratch beneath the skin and you see a pulsing world of rocking cities, lively night markets, and incredible food.
Reasons to Charter a Yacht to South Korea
Old and new.
There’s a joyous juxtaposition to be found threaded through the culture of South Korea. While the city may buzz with clean lines, shimmering skyscrapers, and futuristic touches, there’s very much an ancient and traditional feel that floats through the country. From the dance performances to the quaint teahouses, and the beautifully embroidered hanbok costumes, you can trace the lineage of change in South Korea and every moment is celebrated.
Incredible Cuisine
South Korean food is a chic culinary affair whether you are seeking five-star style or street food treats. From the tangy spiced delight of kimchi to melt in the mouth sharing feasts of Korean barbeque, and bibimbap lunches, simmering noodle soups, and tender crispy chicken, there are endless edible extravaganzas to enjoy.
Fashionable Fun
South Korean culture can be something of a trendsetter and for those seeking sublime shopping opportunities as part of their yacht charter adventure, the cities will satiate that appetite. Home to some of the finest luxury skincare products on the planet, South Korea knows how to pave the way for wellness wonders. The fashion scene is also fabulous and as a tax free haven, you can hit up all the flagship stores and elite shopping districts to get your fill.
Where to Visit in South Korea
Seoul is the heart and soul of South Korea. Serving as the country’s capital, this is where you will find all that rich history of dynasties etched into sites like the Gyeongbokgung Palace. For an even deeper sense of culture, be sure to stroll around the historic Bukchon Hanok Village where gorgeous galleries and boutiques entice you to splurge on local handicrafts. When you have had your fill of sightseeing and shopping, Seoul’s eclectic nightlife and slick dining scene is here to keep your senses indulged and you singing karaoke until the small hours.
Juju Island
The largest island in South Korea and also the lushest, Jeju Island is the nation's favorite escape. Shimmering blue seas, sprawling sands, and a glut of glorious outdoor activities makes Juju Island ever tempting especially for yacht charters looking to drop anchor and soak up South Korea's authentic summer vibes. Alongside sublime beach beauty, the seafood on Juju is a rare joy, especially when blended in local dishes like kimbap. After splashing and feasting, active adventurers may wish to hike up the onyx slopes of Sunrise Peak for those pristine views out across the island.
Perched on the South East Coast, Busan is a beauty and occupies prime real estate tucked between mountains and the sea. It’s the perfect destination for those looking to combine buzzing city exploration with coastal parks, evocative temples, and a thriving creative scene. The chic and slick shores of Haeundae Beach are certainly the place to kick back and soak up the atmosphere and the Gamcheon Culture Village is a charming quirky spot for perusing the colorful café scene and snapping postcard pretty pictures.
When to Charter a Yacht to South Korea
The shoulder season months of Spring and Autumn are the best times for dropping anchor in South Korea. Between the months of April to June and again in September to November, visitors can enjoy soft and warm sunlight, dry days, and the sight of the flowers in bloom or the foliage wearing her brightest shades of gold and red.

- See Biosecurity for yachting entry protocols during the Pandemic.
- The Korean peninsula is one of rugged mountains and dramatic scenery, bordered by China to the north, with Japan to the east. The border between the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to the north and the Republic of Korea in the south, crosses the 38th parallel on an angle. It is a beautiful and interesting country.
- Although in North Korea the discouragement of foreign visitors is undisguised, in the South, the time-consuming formalities can be a bit off-putting. Officially, most of South Korea is open to cruising, but be prepared for the constant checking by the military and Coast Guard officials.
- North Korea maintains a “maritime military border” in which foreign ships may not enter, this is 200 NM in the yellow sea and 50 NM in the sea of Japan. Care should be taken not to come near the Northern limit line north of Incheon, as naval clashes frequently errupt there.
- The most attractive cruising to be found is along the south coast, roughly between the ports of Kunsan and Pusan, where the coast is indented with countless coves, anchorages and hundreds of small islands.
- Pusan gained temporary fame as the world’s sailing centre during the Seoul Olympics and the marina built for that occasion can now be used by cruising yachts. Pusan is Korea’s principal port and second largest city. It is the gateway to the Hallyo Sudo Waterway, a national sea park comprising hundreds of picturesque islands along the coast west of Pusan. The best repair facilities are in the Pusan area; electrical, electronic and engine repair is available locally.
- Cheju Island, off the southern tip of the peninsula, is a useful stop for southbound yachts or those who wish to make a stop while on passage from Japan towards the Asian mainland. Excellent fresh produce can be bought on the island which has a large farming community. There is a small boatyard at Cheju where boats can be hauled out.
- Generally there are adequate repair facilities in all ports which have a fishing fleet. Diesel fuel can be bought in most places, sometimes being delivered by fuel barges which supply the harbour launches. LPG is widely available, as most taxis run on propane.
- Communist North Korea occupies the northern half of the Korean peninsula and its capital is Pyongyang. All foreign visitors require visas, which must be applied for well in advance. Visiting yachts are not welcome and the country is best avoided.
- Most yachts visiting South Korea come for the racing and are from Japan or Russia. Cruising boats from another country usually attract much friendly interest and curiosity.

South Korea Set to Open Yachting Marina
- By Daniel Harding, Jr.
- Updated: April 18, 2011
Seoul Marina
South Korea is opening a marina on the Han River in the capital city of Seoul, with accommodations for up to 90 yachts. Seoul Marina, which will be the first marina of its type in the city’s history, is set to open this month.
With a population of over 10 million, Seoul is one of the largest cities in the world, as well as one of the most economically powerful, thanks to international conglomerates, such as Samsung, LG, and Hyundai-Kia.
Located in the heart of the city directly next to the National Assembly building, Seoul Marina, which cost $23 million to build, boasts a four-story facility with a convention hall, restaurants, parking and cafes to accommodate mariners.
For those flying into the city, 45 yachts are available to rent from the marina after undergoing a 1-hour instructional course.
Time on the water in any capacity is a luxury that only South Korea’s most elite have ever had the opportunity to enjoy. In an attempt to open its waterways to a larger demographic, the Seoul Metropolitan government has announced Seoul Marina will be the first in their country to offer boat rentals.
Yacht owners looking to explore the Han River in something a little more personal can take advantage of this and rent a dinghy for the equivalent of $3.67 an hour, or a larger boat for $13.76 an hour.
“We aim to develop the river as a venue for marine leisure and water sports. We hope the opening of the marina will lead to a boom in the yachting culture in Korea,” the city official said.

34th America’s Cup: Team Korea is an official challenger

For the first time in its 160-year history, a challenge has been made by a South Korean Yacht Club for the America’s Cup, the oldest trophy in international sports. The Sail Korea Yacht Club, represented by Team Korea, has been officially accepted as a challenger for the 34th America’s Cup.
34th America’s Cup Team Korea is an official challenger
Team Korea will be known as the ‘White Tiger Challenge’. The White Tiger, or ‘Baekho’ in Korean, is one of the revered ancient guardian gods in Korean mythology, ferocious and potent, a fitting image for a team from one of the world’s major industrial nations with long term America’s Cup ambitions.
Founder of Team Korea is Dong Young-Kim, an accomplished sailor and the organizer of one of the biggest prize money sailing events in the world, The Korea Match Cup. In launching Team Korea, he intends to boost public interest and knowledge of the America’s Cup and hopes to attract new people to take up sailing as their support for the team grows.
In announcing the team he said, ‘’The America’s Cup is not only the world’s oldest sporting trophy, it is one of the most celebrated, with a tradition, glamour and attraction like no other. Some of the most famous people in world history have competed in this event trying to win this coveted trophy, enjoying the honor of taking part and representing both club and country.”
“Now it is Korea’s turn to enter this famous competition for the first time, at the start of what will prove to be one of the biggest changes the Cup has ever seen, with these new high speed, radical, wing-sailed catamarans, designed to appeal beyond those already interested in sailing. This is a unique opportunity for us to create excitement around the sport in Korea, and introduce newcomers to the events through the awe-inspiring TV images we expect to see.’’
He continued, ‘’As a new team we do not have the experience and legacy of others involved, and so we are realistic about building together a group of people for this challenge, and setting ourselves sensible targets with our first competitive challenge. We see this America’s Cup campaign as a learning experience which we can build on for the future, while improving through the regatta series this year. We have discussions ongoing presently which we hope will provide the necessary resources, sponsorships and long-lasting commitments we desire, and aim to make more announcements shortly in what is proving to be a very exciting time in the ongoing evolution of the America’s Cup.’’
The inaugural 2011/12 America’s Cup World Series begins this summer with three regattas to be staged in Portugal, UK and USA. A further series is planned for 2012/13, before the Louis Vuitton Cup for all the Challengers in San Francisco in 2013, followed by the 34th America’s Cup match itself. Racing begins in new AC45 catamarans, which are then replaced by giant 72 foot wing sailed ‘monsters’, potentially capable of over 40 knots speed, competing in a combination of both fleet and match racing.
“One of our major goals for the new America’s Cup is to enable teams to be sustainable sports franchises, so we’re excited to see Korea enter the America’s Cup for the first time, with sights set on building a team for the future,” Chairman of the America’s Cup Event Authority, Richard Worth said.
‘’Having a country such as Korea enter the America’s Cup adds to the global impact of our event, so we’re very pleased to welcome Team Korea to our growing field of international competitors.”
Team Korea becomes the ninth Challenger accepted, together with two teams each from France and Italy, one each from China, Sweden, Australia, and New Zealand, plus the Defender from the USA. There are three additional challengers who have yet to announce and two more are in the process of having their challenges vetted, making a total of 15 teams set to compete in the 34th America’s Cup

The world’s first on-land cruise ship, this hotel takes all the joy of a cruise ship and combines it with the usefulness of staying in one place.
The sound of waves lapping at the hull is simulated, so you can imagine you are on a cruise.
The location is on a cliff at Jeongdongjin beach, renowned for having the best sunrise in Korea. The revolving bar and lounge on the top floor allow you the best sunrise and sunset view.
From the urban side of Jeongdongjin, the ship looks like it was run ashore. But in reality, it's perched off a high cliff.
The boat is 541 feet (165 meters) long, 148 feet (45 meters) high, and weighs an incredible 30,000 tons.
God knows how they got it up on the cliff in the first place… perhaps it was stranded up there like Noah’s Ark after the flood.
Jeongdongjin is a popular tourist destination thanks to its beautiful beaches and stunning sunrise/sunset views.
The hotel's grand entrance is along two pools, split like the Red Sea by Moses and decorated by statues on both sides.
The circular lounge's focus-point is a piano standing right in the center of the space.
You will be spoiled for a choice of things to do as there is a lounge, nightclub, karaoke bar, seawater pool, and two restaurants.
Your room is a nautical-themed condominium or hotel-style room and features a luxurious bed and entertainment center.
Check out the observation deck with its glass floor suspended above the crashing waves. It looks exactly how you imagine a luxury ocean cruiser to be.
The dolphin-shaped outdoor pool is dotted with sun loungers, and thanks to its elevated position, the panorama is amazing from here.
The ship is next to a park with a sculpture garden so you can wander through curios and beautiful flowers.

South Korea: A new market for the yachting and top luxury Industries
It has been a year now that the Rodriquez Consulting team has kept a close eye on Korea and together with partner Yacht Designer Andrea Borzelli has drawn some thoughts on the dynamics and future developements of what looks to be a new market for the top luxury segment and specifically for Yachts.
It’s very important to undeline that the number one exported good as a percentage of Korea GDP still comes from the ship building industry. Indeed, Korea is world famous to be home of Hunday in Pusan Daewoo and several other significant commercial ship builders. As a matter of fact Hunday still is the largest shipyard worldwide in terms of facilities and number of employees.
What about luxury yachts? Well, after dealing with a number of players and former government officials, we have to say that we see a solid potential. Since the South Korean government grathed quite a lot of autonomy to local/regional governments the demand for design and development of new yachts to export increased significantly and even more interesting, design and development of new marinas became short and medium term goals.
Although the legislation is still quite closed to luxury yachts, HNWI are growing rapidly in Asia in general and in South Korea specifically Asia as a whole has already outnumbered Europe by quantity of V-HNWI (millionaires) and South Korea is very likely to gain more and more importance in terms of share. Korea is now 11th country among the world fastest economic growth countires and the Korean economy is expected to become among the 10 top economies in terms of GDP by 2050, placing it in 8th position.
“South Korea is definitely the place to be with the impressive project to construct new marinas and boating facilities in Gyeonggi Province within the next few years. As the local yachting industry is still relatively young, it is a perfect moment to take a strong position at the very beginning. ,” says Nicolas Lapp, Sunreef’s vice-president.

- Sailing into the winds of change: Sailing in Korea
My Yacht/Sailing Club was featured in the Joongang Daily.
Joong ang Ilbo (February 23, 2007)
Harold Shim, right, aboard a 21-foot trimaran on the Han River in Seoul with members and guests of the 700 Yacht Club.
In 1965, as an 11-year-old immigrant to the United States, Harold Shim found himself with his brother and sister living with an adoptive family on Wrangell Island in southeastern Alaska. His adoptive parents were teachers, who did a little fishing on the side, and Shim learned to fish and earn candy money by harvesting cheek meat from halibut heads at the local fish processing plant. Because he and his siblings were the only Koreans on the island and his adopted family spoke English, Shim’s native language became rusty with disuse, but that wouldn’t stop him from returning to work in Korea as an adult.
When he reached high school age, Shim began running track and cross-country. To get to track meets on other islands, he could take a plane, a fishing boat or a sailboat. The sailing trips, which sometimes lasted several hours, were the beginning of a love affair that would lie dormant through his early and mid adulthood.
Fast forward to the spring of 2000 in Maui, Hawaii. Mr. Shim and his wife enjoyed an evening sail on board the America II, an America’s Cup contender that competed in 1987 against Dennis Conner’s Stars and Stripes. As the sun set, and waves broke over the bow, a love for sailing re-awakened in Mr. Shim. “I decided right then and there, when I go back to Korea, I’m going to sail,” he said.
The fruits of that determination float now near the shores of the Han River where it flows by Seoul’s World Cup park, about a kilometer from the World Cup soccer stadium ― eight sailboats ranging in length from a 9-foot dinghy to a 34-foot catamaran. Four 21-foot trimarans are used for racing.
This stretch of river, bordered by the Gayang and Banghwa bridges on the north and the Sungsan bridge on the south, is the widest and most consistently deep section of the Han, Mr. Shim said. “This is where sailing will take off [in Seoul],” he said.
OUT ON THE WATER In a city of more than 10 million, it’s hard to ever feel like you’ve completely left it all behind. Parks only muffle the sound of passing traffic and hikers share the trails with literally thousands of others. Being out on the water in the Han River is a welcome exception. On a Sunday afternoon in February, the main sounds are the whistle of the wind from the north and the bow of the 35-foot sailboat pushing through the water. Four members of the 700 Yacht Club sit aboard the Hunter 25, along with two guests, enjoying a winter’s sail. Even though the sun is shining and on-shore temperatures are fairly mild, it’s noticeably colder out on the water. The wind searches your clothing for any opening, finding its way in and chilling the skin underneath. After 10 minutes, my jaws begin to go numb and when I ask a question, my tongue moves like I’ve been eating ice cubes.
The boat leaves port under motor and heads toward the far bank. Mr. Shim, who founded the club in May 2006, is at the wheel and Sean Hayes, an American attorney working for the Korean Constitutional Court, readies the sails. The steady stream of two-foot waves coming from the north frequently break into white caps. Even without the sail there is enough wind for the boat to heel to the left, requiring the passengers to shift to the right for ballast.
Mr. Shim says it’s one of the windiest days of the year, but adverse weather is no deterrent for the members of this club. The final sail of 2006 took place in December when the temperature was 11 degrees below zero Centigrade. The first sail of 2007 came during the first week of January.
Five members of the club recently returned from a sailing trip to the Philippines and next fall, a trip is planned for Victoria, British Colombia, where Mr. Shim has a condominium.
A wind surfer wearing a wet suit streaks across the water in front of us. He reaches the far side of the river, and turns back. It takes him just over three minutes to get back to the World Cup Stadium side, a distance of just under a kilometer.
In the clubhouse, Mr. Shim is a friendly but busy person. He jumps around checking on boats, preparing for upcoming sails and checking on rental groups, but out on the water, his smile becomes less hurried and his conversation takes on a more genuine, interested air.
We sail for an hour with different club members taking turns at the wheel before heading back to the clubhouse for a rest.
A NETWORK IN THE MAKING Mr. Hayes is one of five of the 700 Yacht Club’s foreign members, which includes two Korean Americans. Most are Korean businessmen who work for American companies. Their sailing ability when they join the club ranges from next to nothing to being comfortable on the water, but Mr. Hayes, who is also the club’s vice-commodore, said learning to sail is one benefit of membership.
“Their [new members’] first experience sailing is probably here, and the Han River is quite an easy place to learn to sail,” he said.
Mr. Hayes learned himself last May and along with another yacht club member, became one of the first foreigners to get a Korean yacht operator’s license, which is needed to sail a boat with a five-horsepower or larger engine attached. This applies to only three of the club’s boats, and any club member can sail them as long as someone with a yacht license is aboard.
The club, of which Mr. Shim is the principal shareholder, owns the boats, and members get the right to use them for 3.8 million won per year. Housed in a floating barge, the club leases space from one of the riverboat companies that offers cruises on the Han. Mr. Shim estimates that 200 members are needed before he covers the cost of buying and maintaining the boats, and leasing the space.
Nine months after founding the club, there are 25 members. Mr. Shim hopes to reach 100 members this year.
Inside the clubhouse are pool and foosball tables, sofas, a large-screen TV, a sound system and a kitchenette. Barbecue grills are stowed under a ramp leading down to the water and see frequent use on summer nights. All but one of the members speaks English, Mr. Hayes said, and that is the language used at business meetings.
Mr. Shim chose the name 700 Yacht Club because he envisions having that many members spread across Korea someday. “It’s possible in Korea because there are so few sailors,” Mr. Shim said. “I see that as an opportunity.”
For now, the members happily share eight sailboats, which they can use on a first-come-first-served basis. It’s possible to make reservations but until membership increases, there isn’t any need.
Marcus von Engel, an American financial consultant and the club’s commodore, said he enjoys sailing with his wife and two small children on the 25-foot Hunter sailboat.
On a summer’s evening, the children play for a couple of hours before falling asleep below deck, then he and his wife enjoy the sunset or the lights on the Gayang Bridge.
“When you go on a sunset sail underneath the bridges, it’s outstanding,” Mr. Von Engel said. “Now that they light up the bridges, the best view is from the water.” Mr. von Engel said he also uses the club as a place to entertain business associates. It’s convenient to come sailing after work, have a barbecue and enjoy some down time with clients. He said he prefers it to golf, which if played regularly, costs more than a year’s membership.
Mr. Shim estimates there are around 160 cruising sailboats in all of Korea, 10 of which are in the Seoul area. A cruising sailboat is one that has a lavatory and bunks. Up to 10 communities around the country are also planning their own marinas, Mr. Shim said.
With Korea’s move to a five-day work week two years ago and rising levels of prosperity, sailing is ready to take off, Mr. Shim said. “Once they see these foreigners and their Korean friends getting into yachting, the general population will catch on,” Mr. Shim said. “They’ll follow along.” For more information about the 700 Yacht Club, visit www.700yachtclub.com.
