Russian Oligarch’s 'Black Pearl' at the Center of Huge Legal Dispute Over His Fortune

By: Scott Way

Black Pearl sailing yacht

Pirates weren't the type to write a will, but the one written by a Russian billionaire who owned the Black Pearl is now the focus of an epic estate battle. It seems there is no hiding on the seven seas.

The 350-foot long $200 million Black Pearl sailing yacht was commissioned by Russian oligarch Oleg Burlakov, who passed away in June at age 72. Burlakov was a self-made industrial tycoon with the nickname "The Cement King" who had business dealings across the chemical, aerospace, and energy industries. He was also a patriot and served in the Russian Air Force, then under the USSR moniker, through the 70's and 80's with a distinguished record. Upon leaving the military he invested heavily in the oil industry and eventually took control of one of Russia's biggest national companies, Novoroscement. He also later took the helm of oil exploration company Burneftgaz. When he sold Novoroscement in 2007 for $1.5 billion and Burneftegaz in 2014 for $1 billion, his fortune became massive. Oleg and his wife Lyudmila moved to Canada in 1995, and he was laid to rest in July 2021 in North York, a borough of Toronto. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, and two daughters Elena and Veronica.

Aside from his wealth and economic pursuits, Burlakov was also considered an eco-sailing pioneer for his work developing the Black Pearl , which he commissioned in 2010. The unique sailing yacht is widely considered an engineering feat due to both its size and self-sustaining construction. The ship carries three carbon fiber masts with over 31,000 sq ft of sail area, and has a maximum speed of 30 knots (35 mph) under wind power. The sails themselves absorb solar power to run the ship's electronic systems. The ship's builder, Oceanco , claims the Black Pearl can cross the Atlantic unsupported without burning any fossil fuel (although it does have diesel engines as backups).

But despite his wealth and influence Burlakov's death has triggered one of the biggest estate battles in human history. His first will, allegedly written in 2004, gave his entire fortune to his wife and daughters. However, three years ago Burlakov was accused of infidelity and he and his wife Lyudmila were in the midst of divorce proceedings at the time of his death. Now, a mysterious second will has emerged that favours Burlakov's sister and brother-in-law. The second will is apparently a two-page handwritten document written in a notebook that was discovered after Burlakov's death.

The assets in dispute include more than just the Black Pearl . There is also a $100 million mansion in Monaco, a private jet, and an estimated $4 billion in cash. The legal battle is taking place in court in Monaco, Italy, but focuses on a series of meetings between Burlakov and his wife and daughters in London in 2018. There, the family claims, Burlakov began a fraudulent scheme to hide his wealth and put it in the hands of his brother-in-law Nikolai Kazakov. According to Lyudmila and the daughters, Oleg claimed an agreement had always been in place with Kazakov for the bulk of his wealth. The meetings in 2018 didn't come to a resolution, and now with the appearance of a handwritten second will that favours Kazakov, the legal battle is just starting to set sail.

As for the Black Pearl , she is the second largest sailing yacht in the world behind fellow Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko's 469-foot Sailing Yacht A (although they were both set to get bumped down by Jeff Bezos' rumored 500-footer ). She was built by Dutch shipyard Oceanco, who also built Sailing Yacht A and are rumoured to be building the Bezos yacht. The ship is equipped with a unique propulsion system that harnesses solar energy generated while under sail, meaning it rarely needs to use its diesel engines to power its internal systems or provide propulsion. Each of her three carbon fiber masts is a staggering 229 feet high, and her custom-built DynaRig sails can be set in just seven minutes. Below deck there is room for 12 guests, a spa swimming pool, a hot tub, a cinema, and a beach club.

As for the legal proceedings, things are just heating up as Oleg's mistress Sofia Shevtsova has now entered the fray. The 27 year old Russian woman is threating to have Burlakov exhumed for a DNA sample to prove he fathered her child. If that proves true, Shevtsova will also be entering the legal battle for a share of the fortune.

Step Inside the Black Pearl Yacht

Care for the environment is at the very heart of this game-changing superyacht's design.

By Emma Al-Mousawi

Black Pearl Yacht With Sails

Standing at 350ft, Black Pearl is the world’s largest sailing yacht and is estimated to have cost in excess of $200 million. The unique vessel was garnering global attention long before her maiden voyage thanks to her revolutionary design, eco-credentials and technological advancements, all of which have set a new industry standard and seen her scoop-up numerous awards for innovation.

Delivered in 2018 by Dutch shipyard Oceanco, the three-mast yacht is said to be the realization of a radical vision by her owner who wanted “to build something that was out of the ordinary in every way,” according to the ship’s captain Chris Gartner. Who is Black Pearl’s owner? This, along with much of her interior details, has never been officially released, all adding to  Black Pearl’s mystique. That being said, she is widely believed to belong to the Russian businessman, Oleg Burlakov.

This unmistakable vessel is not the product of one designer but in fact the result of an ambitious cross-industry collaboration between some of international yachting’s greatest creative minds. UK-based Ken Freivokh Design (responsible for the iconic Maltese Falcon ) and Italian studio Nuvolari Lenard (behind Steven Speilberg’s Seven Seas yacht) teamed up to create her striking exterior. However, it is not just her aesthetics that sets her apart, but also her utilization of the very latest green technology, which according to Oceanco, has rendered her capable of crossing the Atlantic without using any fuel. “How?” one might ask.

Let’s start with her three imposing 230ft DynaRig carbon masts designed by Dykstra Naval Architects. The innovative structure sees her sails subdivided into smaller sections that can be set or furled at the touch of a button. “The key to the DynaRig’s effectiveness is just how easy it makes sailing Black Pearl rather than relying on propulsion from fossil fuels,”  says Gartner. “With a single person able to set 2,900 sq meters (31, 215 sq ft) of sail area in just under seven minutes, we can quickly and simply turn off the main engines and harness the power of the wind, which costs nothing and is better f or the environment.”

In fact, under sail, the yacht can reach an incredible 30 knots and regenerate enough energy to power the boat’s full house load, removing the need to run generators.

Black Pearl is also powered by an advanced hybrid propulsion system that Oceanco designed in collaboration with specialist consultancy BMT Nigel Gee. Gartner explains how the complex system generates electricity through the vessel’s spinning propellers: “Her hybrid propulsion installation has two shaft lines, each with a controllable pitch propeller.

In normal sailing mode, the propellers are set to minimize drag and prevent the shafts from turning. But when we want to harvest some of that kinetic energy to be stored and used onboard, the pitch of the propellers is altered to create a lifting force as the water passes over them. This rotates the shafts, which are connected to a permanent magnet electric propulsion motor, effectively converting the wind energy that is moving Black Pearl through the water into electrical energy.”

Little information has been released about Black Pearl’ s interiors / ©Tom Van Oossanen

Her interiors – which remain a closely guarded secret – were also designed by Nuvolari Lenard and French architect Gerard Villate . Other than that, what we do know is that she has six cabins providing accommodation for up to 12 guests, including a master suite and two VIP cabins. Black Pearl’s total interior volume is a roomy 2,700 GT, significantly overshadowing the world’s second-largest sailing yacht the EOS at 1500 GT.

No actual pictures of the inside of the vessel have ever been released but according to Nuvolari Lenard, the interior is a celebration of Louis XVI French design (think elaborate neoclassical touches like wood carvings, gold accents and sumptuous fabrics) as well as some art deco touches. The Italian design studio has also shared a handful of interior renderings to give us a hint of what may lie inside the Black Pearl yacht . These include an elaborately decorated dining room that can seat up to 16 guests. We would expect to see this same level of grandeur throughout her accommodation.

Black Pearl is said to have a wealth of recreational spaces spread across her three decks, though due to her secretive nature, little information has been published as to what delights she offers her passengers. Aerial photographs reveal a pool aft of the main deck as well as a hot tub aft of the upper deck. There is also a fold-down platform at the aft of the yacht which is likely to transform into a full-beam beach club.

Ken Freivokh Design features a mysterious unnamed 328-ft-plus DynaRig yacht on its website which some may speculate could give us an insight into the luxury facilities on board the vessel. The unidentified yacht includes a su bstantial toy and tender garage housing two limousine tenders, a hydroplane and a range of utility tenders and jet skis. It is also said to feature a helipad and an extending forward deck that can be used for entertaining guests as well as spotting dolphins. If that wasn’t enough, other out-of-this-world amenities include a glass-fronted swimming pool and an aquarium. Could Black Pearl host similar facilities? It’s anyone’s guess.

The sailing yacht is regularly seen in European ports / ©Oceanco

A true sailing vessel, the Black Pearl yacht is built for adventure and her lower carbon footprint means her voyages are much kinder to the planet than those of a typical motor yacht of similar stature.

Despite her transatlantic credentials she appears to spend most of her time cruising around Europe with regular sightings in Gibraltar as well as stopovers on the Isle of Portland on England’s south coast, the Spanish ports of Cadiz and Tarragona, the Russian city of St.Petersburg and of course Monaco where her owner is said to reside.

According to Marine Traffic , at the time of publication, she was docked in Montenegro at the small but glamorous port of Tivat, located in an enclave of the Adriatic.

£3bn fortune and Black Pearl superyacht at heart of oligarch’s bitter battle over will

Oleg Bourlakov

An oligarch’s £150 million superyacht named the Black Pearl and his £3 billion fortune are at the centre of a bitter international feud which has torn his family apart.

When Oleg Bourlakov died from Covid in June, the 72-year-old left behind an unfinished divorce battle with his wife Loudmila and a raging battle over brother-in-law and business partner Nikolai Kazakov’s stake in his fortune.

The billionaire , who made his money through energy and cement in Russia , was married to Mrs Bourlakova for 47 years but their marriage collapsed three years before his death when she learned he had a mistress in her twenties who claimed to have had his child.

Mrs Bourlakova, 70, with her daughters Elena and Veronica, claims she fell victim to “fraud on an epic scale” when her husband — facing a costly divorce — allegedly planned to hide his assets and hand vast sums over to Mr Kazakov.

Since his death, the family are now locked in another dispute over the ultimate fate of his fortune, including the 107-metre Black Pearl and a £75 million home in Monaco.

black pearl yacht owner

Mr Bourlakov, a former Air Force officer who survived an assassination bid in 2018 when shots were fired at his car, had a showdown meeting with his wife in London in April 2018 when he allegedly first suggested Mr Kazakov had a stake in his £3 billion fortune and the divorce pot would have to be halved.

Helen Davies QC, for Mrs Bourlakova, said the businessman later claimed he had “debts in the hundreds of millions of dollars which further reduced the value of the Bourlakov family’s assets,” the High Court heard. “These statements were lies, which Mr Bourlakov confected in order to obtain Mrs Bourlakova’s assets and retain the vast majority of the family’s assets.”

The legal fight over his estate is now accompanied by a row over his dying wishes. Mr Bourlakov’s 2004 will left everything to his wife, but a second handwritten will from 2019 — on two pages of a notebook and leaving his fortune to the Kazakovs — has been found.

Mrs Bourlakov and her daughters claim the document is “a forgery and/or invalid” and are challenging it in court proceedings in Monaco.

At the High Court, Mr Kazakov and his wife dispute allegations of fraud, and say Mrs Bourlakov used underhand tactics to get her hands on disputed assets from the marriage.

The legal dispute began in Monaco in December 2018 when Mrs Bourlakova filed for divorce and division of the family assets, and she later brought an £8.6 million compensation against the Kazakovs in the UK courts. The Kazakovs argue the feud should be decided in its entirety in Monaco, the “centre of gravity” for the dispute.

Mr Justice Trower is due to rule at a later date whether Mrs Bourlakova’s High Court claim against the Kazakovs and five linked companies can go ahead in London.

BLACK PEARL Yacht – Huge $200M Sailing Yacht

Taking the title of the second largest sailing yacht in the world, BLACK PEARL yacht is a site to behold.

Cruising across the water with her stunning black exterior, the Black Pearl yacht certainly lives up to her name.

BLACK PEARL yacht interior

BLACK PEARL has a spacious interior, almost like a large motor yacht. She has a glass elevator, a spa pool, and a hot tub for the people on board to enjoy. There is also a beach club cinema.

Designed by Nuvolari Lenard , in collaboration with architect Gerard Villate, the interior is not very well known. No pictures of the interior have ever been released.

We do know that the interior design was a tribute to the design of Louis XVI, with ornate wooden details and gold accents.

There are also some influences from the Art Deco era. We also know that there is a grand dining room, set up to host up to 16 dinner guests.

Specifications

The Black Pearl yacht has an overall length of 106,7 meters (35 ft). The beam is 15 meters (49,3 ft) and has a top speed of 15 knots.

The cruising speed is 12 knots. Her sails can be raised in just seven seconds with the push of a button, and she can cross the Atlantic using under a liter of fossil fuel.

She is economical in other aspects too. Regenerative power under sail, for example.

The late owner wanted to have less of an impact on the environment and set up several environmentally friendly solutions.

The Black Pearl yacht has room for up to twelve guests in her six staterooms.

The Black Pearl yacht’s exterior was designed by Nuvolari Lenard, the same as the interior. In collaboration with Ken Freivokh Design, they created her distinct look.

136403445 403702960956695 3191130754082443078 n

The black color covers most of her exterior, and her sails have a mechanism that allows them to be folded, in order to pass through the Panama canal.

She also possesses the largest DynaRig in the world. In fact, she has three of them.

There is some mystery regarding the different features of her exterior, same as for the interior, but thanks to aerial photographs there is known to be a hot tub aft on one of the three decks, and a pool aft on the main deck.

By Nina Done   13 January 2023

It has just been announced that the iconic 107m (350ft) sailing yacht BLACK PEARL is ready to welcome her first charter guests on board from the A-lister-approved superyacht hub of St Barts . Now you too can be among the first to experience the ground-breaking yacht for yourselves on a Caribbean yacht charter  this winter.

Delivered in 2018 by the renowned Dutch yard Oceanco , the award-winning tri-deck  sailing yacht has been hailed as an innovative triumph, with its iconic DynaRig sailing system, high-tech design and wave-piercing bow, and has been turning heads ever since.

BLACK PEARL is one of the largest and most ecological sailing yachts in the world, capable of crossing the entire Atlantic burning just 20 liters of fuel thanks in part to her DynaRig sailing system and an innovative propulsion system that harvests kinetic energy under sail.

Her striking exteriors are from the boards of the illustrious Nuvolari Lenard and Ken Freivokh, while her naval architecture comes courtesy of Dyksra Architects, who previously worked on the renowned sailing yacht MALTESE FALCON , from which she drew her inspiration.

Her interiors, penned by Valentina Zannier and architect Gerard Villate, have long been kept under wraps, but now they have been revealed to showcase a luxurious palette with design cues from the neoclassic Louis XIV period, characterized by elegance and refinement, with touches of gilded opulence throughout. So, as sleek and slightly menacing as she may seem from the outside, she is the very essence of sumptuous luxury on the inside.

Sailing yacht BLACK PEARL provides accommodation for up to 12 charter guests across 5 beautifully-appointed suites.

On board highlights include vast alfresco deck spaces replete with an array of sun loungers, a Jacuzzi and bar for the perfect daytime hangout while on charter, as well as a 4,000-bottle wine cellar and tasting room, and a beach club featuring ceiling lights mimicking the night sky constellations for an added ethereal touch. She also boasts a wealth of convivial social and dining areas for her guests to enjoy while on board.

On board with Dr Mohammed Al Barwani, owner of Black Pearl-builder Oceanco

Related articles.

A life-long love of the sea led Dr Mohammed Al Barwani to acquire not just one but two major shipyards, Oceanco and Turquoise Yachts. He tells BOAT about balancing the business of yachting and life on board his own 32m motor yacht in Oman...

“I remember building a small boat from planks of wood when I was a kid. My friends and I carried the boat to the sea but as soon as we put that thing in the water it sank and all my friends walked away,” says Dr Mohammed Al Barwani with a wry smile. Thankfully his shipbuilding has gone better than his raft building, as he is now the owner of Dutch yard Oceanco and the major investor in Turkey’s Turquoise Yachts .

“I’ve always lived by the sea, and I have always loved the sea. I remember going fishing when I was about six and it was me that got hooked,” he explains as we take respite from a hectic Monaco Yacht Show in the Yacht Club de Monaco. However, despite being a lifelong owner of various boats – ranging from a Laser sailing dinghy to his current 32-metre Hatteras motor yacht – it wasn’t until 2010 that the Omani businessman, who is founder and chairman of MB Holding Group, became involved with the industry from a business perspective.

“It was during the financial crisis, and I was visiting Oceanco hoping to find an abandoned project,” he explains. “I didn’t find a project, but the owner at the time wanted to sell and do something else. I was impressed by the people I saw; I was impressed by the cleanliness of the shipyard, and I thought maybe we should get into this.” Taking on a shipyard during the economic uncertainties of the period was undoubtedly a gamble, but it paid off. “We were very lucky because soon after the financial crisis the business came back. We acquired it in April 2010; in 2010 we didn’t sell any boats, but in 2011 we sold three boats.”

Over the past decade Oceanco has been behind some extraordinary and innovative yachts – including 106.7-metre sailing yacht Black Pearl , 110-metre Kaos (formerly Jubilee ) and 90-metre DAR . “I am proud of every yacht that we have produced; we produce beautiful yachts,” he says. Dr Al Barwani keeps in regular contact with the management but only visits the yard every couple of months. “When I took over, I gave freedom to the management to do what they want to do. I have a final ‘yes’ or ‘no’ but it is the management that is driving it. I enjoy it, it’s not work, it is more of a pleasure.”

In 2015 Dr Al Barwani decided to expand his investment in the superyacht industry further, acquiring a majority stake in Turquoise Yachts. “I thought at the time, and I still do, that Turquoise has a lot of potential for growth. Turkey has been growing as an industrial country and Turquoise was also growing. Since we acquired it, the company has come some way,” he says.

On the eve of Monaco Yacht Show, Turquoise announced the sale of its largest project to date – an 87-metre custom superyacht named Project Vento. This project sits at the top end of the sweet spot that Dr Al Barwani would like the yard to focus on. “We want to concentrate on yachts from 55 metres to about 90 metres,” he explains. “The 40-metre range is too demanding, and we can’t make money there.”

Dr Al Barwani has owned his current 32-metre Hatteras for 12 years and predominantly keeps the yacht in Muscat. When the weather is good, he often hosts meetings on the aft deck in the marina, ordering in food from the local restaurants. “It’s nice for my clients because instead of being in an office and talking business, we are out on a boat.” But when it comes to the weekends it is all about family. “I have eleven grandchildren, we could start a football team, they are my pride and joy,” he says. “On the weekends we all go out on the boat to relax. I may go for a half an hour dive and the kids enjoy being on the jet skis or the sea bobs.”

His favourite cruising spot is the Daymaniyat Islands, situated less than 20 nautical miles from Muscat. Comprising nine small islands, the nature reserve is famous for its hawksbill and green turtles. “The islands are beautiful,” he says. “I have scuba-dived in a lot of places, but for me Daymaniyat is one of the best diving spots in the world.”

He is passionate that more yachts should come and experience the Omani coastline for themselves. “Oman has a lot to offer, you will be alone on a beautiful beach, the islands are unspoilt and clean. It is just one of the best places to be,” he says. “Going back a few years ago there were a lot of yachts coming into the Indian Ocean but then unfortunately piracy came up and the yachts stopped coming. Now the yachts are coming again, but the problem is there are no facilities and services. It is a chicken-and-egg situation.”

As well as diving, Dr Al Barwani’s other passion while on board is photography. “I inherited the interest from my father. I still travel with a camera – I have three or four of them, but unfortunately my smartphone is taking over,” he says. “I take photos of anything, passing yachts, the sea, the kids. All of my photos are on my phone or the cloud, at my last count there were more than 20,000 pictures.”

With his football team of grandchildren, it’s perhaps not surprising that Dr Al Barwani has considered upsizing to an Oceanco. “We started building a 90-metre on spec and I got the kids to come to the keel-laying ceremony and then a year down the line someone wanted to buy it,” he says. “It has actually happened a couple of times and now the kids are saying, ‘Grandfather, we don’t want to do that anymore because you keep on selling them!’”

Having failed to build his own yacht (without selling it in the process), Dr Al Barwani now has his sights on a 70-metre and has a new plan. “I may consider buying a used Oceanco or Turquoise,” he explains. “A lot of these boats have a life that could go on forever. I would buy a 15- or 20-year-old boat, take it back to the yard to get it refitted and make it more environmentally friendly. It would come back out as a new boat.”

Sustainability is becoming increasingly important for both yards Dr Al Barwani is involved with. “There is definitely a move towards conservation of energy, conservation of the environment and recycling of materials,” he says. “The clients are driving it, the public are driving it but the regulations are also driving it. There will be ports in future where you can’t go in unless your boat meets certain minimum emissions.”

There are of course multiple hybrid and green fuel solutions hitting the market, but Dr Al Barwani also thinks there might be a simpler solution. “There is nothing cleaner than building a sailboat; for 3,000 years there have been sailboats and for 3,000 years they haven’t polluted the oceans.” Oceanco has increased the number of sailing yachts it is producing, and there is currently a 127-metre vessel under construction at the yard . “Ten years ago, we were not building sailboats; now we are probably the leading builder of large sailboats,” he adds.

Aside from his involvement in the superyacht industry Dr Al Barwani’s career has predominantly been based in oil and gas and he sees a lot of similarities between the two. “Oil and gas are a very disciplined area. Because of the accidents that have happened historically it has evolved to be very safety-conscious,” he explains. “It has given me a discipline to look first thing into the safety of anything and obviously safety comes along with environmental issues and sustainability.”

Aside from his oil and gas assets, he also has business interests in banking, insurance, engineering and hospitality. The latter includes several resorts in Oman. “I think there’s a similarity between building yachts and building hotels. A yacht is basically a floating hotel,” he says. One of his daughters looks after Dr Al Barwani’s hospitality business and his other children are also involved in different areas of MB Holding Group. “Some have more interest in the oil and gas and some take more interest in the shipbuilding.”

With the next generation continuing his legacy, at some stage Dr Al Barwani might finally find the time to visit his dream destination. “I have dreamt of going to Raja Ampat for a long time. I have read everything about it, I have watched all the movies about it. It is the place at the top of my bucket list,” he reveals. However, he has very set ideas on what type of yacht he wants to visit the Indonesian archipelago on, and it isn’t made of wood. “I want to go on a nice yacht built by one of my two shipyards,” he says. “As soon as I get my future yacht, I will be there.”
