WinWin and Visione battle it out at the St Barths Bucket
27 march 2023.
In a hotly-contested St Barths Bucket regatta sailed in big Caribbean breezes, the fight for class honours between the evergreen Baltic 147 Visione and the newly upgraded Baltic 108 WinWin went down to the wire in a last race showdown in which the winner took all.
Both yachts went into the last of the three-race series with a 1 st and 2 nd apiece, but at the denouement it was the Javier Jaudenes-designed WinWin which came out on top, sailing a clean, fault-free third race to keep the hi-speed Visione at bay and take Les Gazelles Class with a 2,1,1 scoreline.
With the owner at the helm, Irish Olympic Finn sailor Tim Goodbody orchestrating tactics and Vendee Globe veteran Jonny Malbon navigating, WinWin’s well drilled crew were keen to see how effective her new Doyle Structured Luff technology would be in the boisterous Caribbean trade winds which hit the high 20-knot mark regularly throughout the regatta.
Baltic 108 WinWin
Structural changes in the bow area to take the additional load of WinWin’s new Doyle headsail, which drives the luff to weather to dramatically reduce luff sag, had caused a hiatus in the yacht’s highly successful race programme, but she returned with real intent at St Barths this year.
Visione, incredibly in her 21 st season since her launch in 2002, showed remarkable downwind speed in the high teens in race one and eventually overtook the Swan 115 Jasi before catching WinWin right on the line. The signs were looking ominous for anyone trying to unseat this iconic yacht which continues to impress on the world’s race tracks.
In the second pursuit-style race, WinWin’s lightening downwind speed in the strong 28-knot breeze and her new-found upwind ability was enough to keep Visione at bay taking the winner’s gun to set up an exciting final race.
Baltic 147 Visione
With all to play for, the St Barths Bucket fleet was sent on what is affectionately known as ‘The Wiggly Course’, race officer Peter Craig keeping the 25 superyachts in the lee of the island of St Barths to shelter them from the persistently high winds and big sea running on the windward side. Normally a clockwise circumnavigation of the island would deliver the finale, but sailing The Wiggly Course in reverse proved equally challenging.
In a tense pursuit race between Visione, WinWin and Jasi, it was WinWin who showed the competition a clean pair of heels getting home comfortably ahead of Visione. Skipper Will Glenn, said: “Visione is an iconic boat with an incredible history, a great crew and a super competitive owner so we knew it wasn’t going to be easy. We just wanted to sail clean and put into play what we have been practicing as a team, and it went well! No mistakes and that was our mantra today – keep it simple!”
Elsewhere in the Bucket fleet Baltic 117 Perseverance, launched in 2021, voted Sailing Yacht of the Year in 2022 and competing in her first big regatta, fought hard for an impressive 3 rd place in the seven-boat L’Esprit 1 Class.
Baltic 117 Perseverance
The St Barths Bucket was won this year by the Ted Fontaine-designed Nakupenda, built by Danish Yachts, whose 4,1,1 scoreline was impressive in a particularly competitive class. And no report on this year’s event should be without a mention of the absolutely superb Columbia, a steel-hulled replica of a 1920’s Newfoundland Grand Banks fishing schooner which was a sight to behold. She scorched round the courses revelling in the big conditions to post a 1,1,1 scoreline in the L’Esprit 2 class.
There will be a chance to see WinWin and Perseverance in action later this summer when they attend the Baltic Yachts’ 50 th Anniversary Rendezvous Regatta in Sardinia which runs from 14-17 September.

It’s always nice when a superyacht packs a few surprises. Case in point: Too Design’s newest concept . The unassuming 186-footer is full of interesting features that only become apparent upon closer inspection.
The futuristic, eco-friendly vessel, which has been dubbed VisionE, was penned by the studio’s founder and veteran designer Marco Casali , with the goal of creating a more sustainable way of living and yachting.

“The name, which is Italian for “vision,” stands for a yaching evolution; an ecological, electrical, environmentally-friendly vision—our visionE,” Casali told Robb Report.
Most notably, VisionE is fitted with a retractable solar roof that opens up to reveal a sprawling 1,600-square-foot sun deck with a spa pool, alfresco dining area and lounge. Think of it as the marine equivalent of a Kinder Surprise Egg. Beyond the cool mechanics, the roof’s solar panels can harness up to 62 kW of energy from the sun, which is then stored in the large battery pack on board and used to power the yacht.

Speaking of power, Casali partnered with Francesco Rogantin of Names Studio on the superyacht’s propulsion and engineering. VisionE has been equipped with a hybrid diesel-electric system capable of pushing her to an estimated 14 knots, but could eventually run purely on clean, green electricity or even hydrogen. In order to further increase efficiency, VisionE sports a sleek aluminum hull and sharp bow specially designed to reduce drag.
The aft deck can be used as an outdoor cinema. Too Design
In addition to the nifty hydraulic roof, VisionE’s seven staterooms each feature balconies that automatically fold down to give the 14 guests direct (and private) access to the ocean. The aft bulwarks can be extended, too, in order to create a massive deck by the water’s edge. At the center of this multi-purpose area is a section that can be opened up to create a saltwater swimming pool in the sea, or a garage for the tender. The section can also be covered to create a basketball court or outdoor cinema.
As for the 499 GT interior, it offers an open-plan layout geared toward entertaining, and can be customized to the owner’s taste. You’d better believe there will be a few surprises, though.

Sailing Yacht VISIONE Wins the 2015 St Barths Bucket Regatta

By Editorial Team 26 March 2015
Providing thrilling racing from 19 to 22 March, the 2015 St. Barths Bucket Regatta came to a close earlier this week with 45m sailing yacht VISIONE announced as overall winner of the event.
Four classes of yachts took part in the regatta - including Gazelles, Elegantes, Mademoiselles and Grande Dames - with medium winds experienced by the 35 participants testing their sailing skills around a "wrong way around" course by taking a clockwise tour of St. Barthelemy.
This year's St. Barth's Bucket saw 38m Perini Navi charter yacht P2 and runner-up 33m Vitters yacht I NOUI provide stiff competition for Baltic Yachts build VISIONE, who has competed in six Buckets since making her debut at the event 11 years ago.
Commenting on the final day of racing, VISIONE's tactician, Jens Christiansen, commented that "The 10-11 knot winds suited us well. We were sailing very fast on the long beat, going farther out because we are that much faster than anybody else and staying clear of other boats in other classes so as not to get entangled in them tacking on each other."
Built before many of the other participants in the regatta in 2002, she continued "We are the fastest, and we always start last. With the old rating, however, we always had to sail more than a perfect race to be able to win. We've been close by finishing second overall once or twice, but never winning. Now with the new rating system (captured within the new ORCsy rule), we can win."
The event came to a close with a laid-back prize-giving ceremony, where S/Y Visione accepted her award for first place in the Gazelles class, 52m Pendennis S/Y Adela and 52m Royal Huisman S/Y Elfje picked up joint first prize in the Elegantes class, 30m Southern Wind S/Y 'Cape Arrow' (charted for the event) took the Mademoiselles class and 37m Palmer Johnson S/Y Axia won in the Grand Dames. The Visione team also celebrated taking overall honours by winning the prestigious 'Bucket.'

Perseverance 1: On board BOAT International's Sailing Yacht of the Year 2022
A classic profile belies the immense technical innovations found on board this award-winning sailing yacht. Risa Merl peeks inside Perseverance 1
When it comes to Baltic Yachts ’ 35.8-metre Perseverance 1 , what you see is not entirely what you get. Beneath her classically inspired yet restrained exterior is a wealth of high-tech innovations aimed at maximising performance and reducing energy consumption. She epitomises a winning blend of style and substance – so much so that she has earned multiple accolades, including being crowned Sailing Yacht of the Year at the 2022 World Superyacht Awards .
The owner’s previous yacht was a Dykstra 60, an 18-metre pilot cutter designed by Dykstra Naval Architects and launched at Claasen Shipyards in 2013. The brief for this smaller Perseverance was for a comfortable performance yacht with traditional exterior lines. The yacht was made to sail easily with minimal crew, and the owner, who has a passion for technology, also wanted to be able to easily carry out maintenance on all onboard systems himself.
The new yacht levels up these aims inside a much larger envelope; the owner stepped up nearly 20 metres in length. “The brief was to upscale the previous Dykstra 60 to a more modern, lightweight, high-performance superyacht, with an in-depth focus on and attention to energy consumption on board,” says Ryan Taylor, Perseverance 1 ’s captain.
The design was very much owner-driven. The owner is an experienced yachtsman who chartered several larger sailing yachts to gain insight into what he liked before embarking on the new build.
“The client knew exactly what he wanted to achieve – this made for a very clear design brief from day one,” says Erik Wassen, senior designer at Dykstra Naval Architects. The owner, he continues, wished for “a very functional sailing yacht that would be responsive in light [Mediterranean] conditions but suitable for passagemaking worldwide, with easily adjustable sail configurations to match changing conditions. The exterior was to be classically elegant – pilot cutter-style with restrained looks, but a bold edge.”
The owner made it clear at the time of the Dykstra 60’s launch that, if he were to build another yacht, he would use the same design team, and he was true to his word for his first foray into the superyacht sphere. Dykstra penned the exterior and provided the naval architecture, while deVosdeVries Design once again created the interior. The two teams worked in concert on the general arrangement, space planning for long-range trips and the ability to charter. The band was back together, with the addition of a new member – Finland’s Baltic Yachts was chosen as the builder.
“Dykstra had several designs of varying sizes on their drawing board from which we started our discussions, which were quite technical from the start. [The owner’s] maritime and engineering background meant there was a lot of technical interest and knowledge brought to the project,” says Henry Hawkins, executive vice president of Baltic Yachts. “Built for a true sailor, the boat had to sail well and be easily driven. Energy efficiency was a key topic also.”
Of course, sailing yachts are already a greener option than motor yachts but Perseverance 1 ’s owner wanted to push the eco-friendly limits further and reduce engine dependency as much as possible. As a result, the yacht has a diesel-electric propulsion train with high voltage battery banks that can be charged when sailing by turning the propeller. Electricity can be regenerated while under way, and in suitable conditions – 12-plus knots of breeze – regeneration alone will meet the yacht’s entire energy demands. “It also provided proof that these types of systems can be retrofitted into existing yachts,” says Hawkins.
Perseverance 1 distinguished herself in the 2022 World Superyacht Awards, winning in her category – Sailing Yachts 30 metres to 39.9 metres – and taking the Sailing Yacht of the Year title. The judges praised her efficient diesel-electric propulsion system and well-integrated technology that takes her batteries to full charge in just 4.5 hours and permits eight to nine hours of silent running at anchor.
“We have been able to efficiently regenerate power over an average of 20 to 25 kilowatts in about 16 to 20 knots of wind while still managing 12 to 14 knots of boat speed,” says Captain Taylor, who served as build captain. He joined the team in 2020 after finishing a seven-year stint on another Baltic, the 33-metre WinWin . Taylor also completed the build as engineer/mate of WinWin , so he was well rehearsed in the way Baltic operates, which was an asset to the Perseverance 1 project.
The owner sought to reduce energy consumption in other ways. He pushed for a seawater cooling system using only one controllable, variable-speed pump as opposed to pumps for each piece of equipment, which resulted in considerable energy savings.
“The owner was very keen to minimise the yacht’s footprint in the operational conditions as well,” says Wassen. To achieve this, sensors were installed to set the interior temperature based on whether the owner’s and guest cabins are occupied. When a cabin is not in use, the temperature threshold automatically adjusts to minimise energy demand.
Perseverance 1 ’s hull is of a modern design that was optimised by computational fluid dynamics calculations to minimise drag. The hull is equipped with a high-aspect rudder and lifting keel to enhance sailing capabilities. She performs well in light air, owing in part to her carbon-fibre spars and advanced construction materials. With an oversized rig and sail inventory that can make the most out of any wind speed above eight knots, Perseverance 1 is very efficient when under sail. “The other philosophy for the design that was originally requested was that she could easily sail at full power in 10 knots with little effort,” says Captain Taylor.
Perseverance 1 sails with an exceptionally light helm feel and a fast response. “My personal favourite space on board is behind the steering wheel as it is a real joy to helm the boat and feel the response of every change you make to sail trim or course,” says Wassen. Her sailing attributes were recognised during the Boat International Design & Innovation Awards where she won the award for Best Naval Architecture in the Sailing Yachts category. She scored points for a rig geometry that allows for quick sail adaption to match environmental conditions, enabling her to sail for long periods.
Along with high performance, she is comfortable while under way. High bulwarks and deep cockpits keep guests and crew safe and dry. Notably, the bimini top over the guest cockpit can be raised or lowered while sailing to adjust to the circumstances. The bimini can be set at a position aligned with the deckhouse, which provides a nice, sheltered area for guests when under way while, in adverse conditions, it can be lowered entirely to form a lid on the cockpit coaming and protect the seat cushions.
The challenge came in fitting all the technical achievements and modern deck equipment into a minimalist exterior design. “As always, with low-profile yachts the space in the engine room was tight, meaning everything had to be carefully planned,” says Hawkins. Perseverance 1 fits into the Baltic philosophy in terms of being a lightweight, easily driven and highly innovative sailing machine, but she stands apart from the yard’s recent launches by way of her classic lines.
Classic, however, does not mean overly fussy. Dykstra was able to distil the lines of a Bristol pilot cutter, popularised in the 19th and early 20th centuries, down to its purest form. “Uncluttered, clean with understated elegance,” is how Wassen describes Perseverance 1 . Her two low and long deckhouses are wood-clad to resemble traditional construction methods. The wood is saturated with oil to have the warm glow of the grain without the gloss of varnish. Metal parts are bead-blasted rather than high-gloss, adding to the overall feel of understated elegance. “While looking classic, the transom is larger – and more modern – than on many comparable yachts,” he adds.
The owner’s previous yacht served as the starting point for the interior decor. “The brief for the design was relatively open,” says Michiel de Vos of deVosdeVries Design. “They liked the airy feel created by the contrast between veneered areas and painted upper bulkheads. Leather had to be incorporated into the detailing, and we had to make sure that there would be no large contrast between interior and exterior spaces.”
Though the interior is more modern than classic, what the exterior and interior share is a minimalist, unfussy sensibility. The decor is understated, with sharp lines, grey tones and subtle detailing. De Vos calls the motif “industrial chic”. The main furniture and wall panelling is in a whitish-grey stained oak, while floors are in a durable dark-grey stained maple, which is also used in joinery details and wall recesses. Saddle-stitched leather is used on the bed surrounds, handrails, wall panelling, and cabinet and door handles. Hardware is in a dark matt vintage patina with knurled surfaces.
“All materials, veneers, colours and hardware were to be robust but cool,” says de Vos. “The detailing is delicate, tactile but not outspoken, with slightly angled floor margins, nicely veneered grab rails and a curved oak cornice detail, where you can really see the craftmanship of the carpenters at Baltic Yachts.”
Perseverance 1 ’s double deckhouse design helps define the divide between guest and crew areas. Guest cabins are set forward on the yacht, while the crew areas extend aft to the crew deckhouse. The main deckhouse hosts the upper saloon, with its large dining table. The custom light fixture and corresponding wall sconces were developed and built by the owners themselves. In keeping with the yacht’s traditional exterior, individual rectangular windows are found on all sides of the deckhouse rather than a swath of continuous wraparound glazing, but the sightlines are still tremendous.
All of the guest cabins are found forward of the amidships engine room. The owner’s cabin is set in the bow, with a lobby connecting it to a private starboard side en suite. A further three guest cabins include a children’s bunk bedroom and double guest cabin to port, while a twin cabin is starboard. Each have their own bathrooms with custom-shaped Corian washbasins.
Both de Vos and Hawkins name the lower saloon as a favourite spot. A few steps down from the upper saloon, towards the aft, it can be used as a lounge, dining area or cinema, and even augmented to be shared between guests and crew. A television on a lift separates the saloon from the galley to port. When lowered it opens up the space, creating a buffet-style countertop. “This area has been designed as a multifunctional space where guests can enjoy a movie at night, but also have breakfast or dinner,” says de Vos. “It’s a really practical area where guests and crew can come together, especially on the longer charter trips.”
In less than a year after delivery, Perseverance 1 had already worked her sea legs, putting them to the test in the shakedown cruise alone. “We have travelled and sailed more than 6,500 nautical miles with the delivery from Baltic Yachts in Jakobstad, Finland, down to Malta, via Norway, the Netherlands and southern Spain,” says Captain Taylor.
“The departure from Kristiansand, Norway, was certainly timed well as we departed early morning to a building easterly breeze of around 18 to 22 knots on the planned route to Amsterdam with a true wind angle of around 120 to 130TWA. One reef in the mainsail and unfurling the Code 0, and we were off sailing at speeds well in excess of 15 knots, seeing over 20 knots quite a few times.”
Wassen refers to Perseverance 1 as wearing a “bespoke costume” – a fitting description as the yacht is dressed in an exterior that implies a historical nautical past while concealing her future-forward underpinnings.
Energy efficiency, regenerative power, high-performance sailing, long-haul capabilities and comfortable living are all encased in a classic-looking yacht. There is certainly more to Perseverance 1 than meets the eye.

VIVA: The $250 Million Superyacht Of UFC Owner Frank Fertitta III
From his current position as CEO of Station Casinos to how he – alongside brother Lorenzo and childhood friend Dana White – transformed the UFC into a multi-billion-dollar promotion , there’s virtually endless information about how Frank Fertitta III made his fortune. How he chooses to spend said fortune, however, is a little more mysterious (at least for the fun stuff). One such indulgence we know the elder Fertitta brother has treated himself to is the ultra-luxurious Feadship-built superyacht known as Viva, which comes with an eye-watering price tag of US$175 million / AU$252 million.
Conceptualised by Azure Yacht Design & Naval Architecture in collaboration with De Voogt Naval Architects, while also showcasing interiors accomplished by Peter Marino, Viva was only completed in the Netherlands last year and delivered shortly thereafter.

Back to the matter of Viva, it boasts an overall length of 308 feet / 94 metres with a 13.6-metre beam and gross tonnage of 2,999 – making it the 85th largest superyacht in the entire world; seventh largest ever constructed by Feadship – and can comfortably accommodate 14 guests across seven cabins alongside a capable crew of 18.
Viva has been called the “most environmentally-friendly luxury vessel of its kind” due to it featuring a hybrid propulsion system that allows the boat to cruise using diesel-electric power, as well as a waste treatment plant and heat recovering systems.

$175 million superyacht viva moored off nantucket.
Jason Graziadei • Jul 06, 2022
If you’ve arrived or departed from the island by boat over the past few days, you couldn’t have missed the gargantuan visitor lurking just offshore.
The 308-foot superyacht Viva was moored off Nantucket earlier this week, just outside the jetties, as the massive vessel was too large to navigate into the harbor. It departed for Martha's Vineyard Wednesday night.
The $175 million Viva, which was built by Feadship in the Netherlands and completed just last year, features its own helicopter which has been spotted circling around the island this week. It is the 85th largest superyacht in the world, and is believed to be owned by billionaire Frank Fertitta III , the CEO of Station Casinos in Las Vegas and founder of Zuffa LLC, the parent company of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
The yacht’s helicopter sports the tail number N702FF, which was believed to have been chosen for Fertitta’s initials.
"That's definitely one of the biggest vessels I've seen around Nantucket in my 20 years here," Harbormaster Sheila Lucey said on Wednesday.
The yacht has been called the “most environmental-friendly luxury vessel of its kind” as it features a hybrid propulsion system that allows the boat to travel at 12 knots under diesel-electric power, as well as a waste treatment plant and heat recovering systems on board. Its annual running costs are reported to be in excess of $17.5 million .
Viva has a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure. Among its many amenities are a cinema, a beauty salon, a gym, and, of course, a helipad on the upper deck.
Following its construction in the Dutch shipyard, the massive yacht had to squeeze through narrow canals to make it out to sea, as documented in these photos shared by CNN last year.

Why were so many metro stations in Moscow renamed?
Okhotny Ryad station in Soviet times and today.
The Moscow metro system has 275 stations, and 28 of them have been renamed at some point or other—and several times in some cases. Most of these are the oldest stations, which opened in 1935.
The politics of place names
The first station to change its name was Ulitsa Kominterna (Comintern Street). The Comintern was an international communist organization that ceased to exist in 1943, and after the war Moscow authorities decided to call the street named after it something else. In 1946, the station was renamed Kalininskaya. Then for several days in 1990, the station was called Vozdvizhenka, before eventually settling on Aleksandrovsky Sad, which is what it is called today.
The banner on the entraince reads: "Kalininskaya station." Now it's Alexandrovsky Sad.
Until 1957, Kropotkinskaya station was called Dvorets Sovetov ( Palace of Soviets ). There were plans to build a monumental Stalinist high-rise on the site of the nearby Cathedral of Christ the Saviour , which had been demolished. However, the project never got off the ground, and after Stalin's death the station was named after Kropotkinskaya Street, which passes above it.
Dvorets Sovetov station, 1935. Letters on the entrance: "Metro after Kaganovich."
Of course, politics was the main reason for changing station names. Initially, the Moscow Metro itself was named after Lazar Kaganovich, Joseph Stalin’s right-hand man. Kaganovich supervised the construction of the first metro line and was in charge of drawing up a master plan for reconstructing Moscow as the "capital of the proletariat."
In 1955, under Nikita Khrushchev's rule and during the denunciation of Stalin's personality cult, the Moscow Metro was named in honor of Vladimir Lenin.
Kropotkinskaya station, our days. Letters on the entrance: "Metropolitan after Lenin."
New Metro stations that have been opened since the collapse of the Soviet Union simply say "Moscow Metro," although the metro's affiliation with Vladimir Lenin has never officially been dropped.
Zyablikovo station. On the entrance, there are no more signs that the metro is named after Lenin.
Stations that bore the names of Stalin's associates were also renamed under Khrushchev. Additionally, some stations were named after a neighborhood or street and if these underwent name changes, the stations themselves had to be renamed as well.
Until 1961 the Moscow Metro had a Stalinskaya station that was adorned by a five-meter statue of the supreme leader. It is now called Semyonovskaya station.
Left: Stalinskaya station. Right: Now it's Semyonovskaya.
The biggest wholesale renaming of stations took place in 1990, when Moscow’s government decided to get rid of Soviet names. Overnight, 11 metro stations named after revolutionaries were given new names. Shcherbakovskaya became Alekseyevskaya, Gorkovskaya became Tverskaya, Ploshchad Nogina became Kitay-Gorod and Kirovskaya turned into Chistye Prudy. This seriously confused passengers, to put it mildly, and some older Muscovites still call Lubyanka station Dzerzhinskaya for old times' sake.
At the same time, certain stations have held onto their Soviet names. Marksistskaya and Kropotkinskaya, for instance, although there were plans to rename them too at one point.
"I still sometimes mix up Teatralnaya and Tverskaya stations,” one Moscow resident recalls .
“Both have been renamed and both start with a ‘T.’ Vykhino still grates on the ear and, when in 1991 on the last day of my final year at school, we went to Kitay-Gorod to go on the river cruise boats, my classmates couldn’t believe that a station with that name existed."
The city government submitted a station name change for public discussion for the first time in 2015. The station in question was Voykovskaya, whose name derives from the revolutionary figure Pyotr Voykov. In the end, city residents voted against the name change, evidently not out of any affection for Voykov personally, but mainly because that was the name they were used to.
What stations changed their name most frequently?
Some stations have changed names three times. Apart from the above-mentioned Aleksandrovsky Sad (Ulitsa Kominterna->Kalininskaya->Vozdvizhenka->Aleksandrovsky Sad), a similar fate befell Partizanskaya station in the east of Moscow. Opened in 1944, it initially bore the ridiculously long name Izmaylovsky PKiO im. Stalina (Izmaylovsky Park of Culture and Rest Named After Stalin). In 1947, the station was renamed and simplified for convenience to Izmaylovskaya. Then in 1963 it was renamed yet again—this time to Izmaylovsky Park, having "donated" its previous name to the next station on the line. And in 2005 it was rechristened Partizanskaya to mark the 60th anniversary of victory in World War II.
Partizanskaya metro station, nowadays.
Another interesting story involves Alekseyevskaya metro station. This name was originally proposed for the station, which opened in 1958, since a village with this name had been located here. It was then decided to call the station Shcherbakovskaya in honor of Aleksandr Shcherbakov, a politician who had been an associate of Stalin. Nikita Khrushchev had strained relations with Shcherbakov, however, and when he got word of it literally a few days before the station opening the builders had to hastily change all the signs. It ended up with the concise and politically correct name of Mir (Peace).
The name Shcherbakovskaya was restored in 1966 after Khrushchev's fall from power. It then became Alekseyevskaya in 1990.
Alekseyevskaya metro station.
But the station that holds the record for the most name changes is Okhotny Ryad, which opened in 1935 on the site of a cluster of market shops. When the metro system was renamed in honor of Lenin in 1955, this station was renamed after Kaganovich by way of compensation. The name lasted just two years though because in 1957 Kaganovich fell out of favor with Khrushchev, and the previous name was returned. But in 1961 it was rechristened yet again, this time in honor of Prospekt Marksa, which had just been built nearby.
Okhotny Ryad station in 1954 and Prospekt Marksa in 1986.
In 1990, two historical street names—Teatralny Proyezd and Mokhovaya Street—were revived to replace Prospekt Marksa, and the station once again became Okhotny Ryad.

“Zefira, a magnificent, lean aluminium and carbon 50 metre yacht. A project in which, together with our designers, we put our heart”
Experienced european owners brought together a top team of Dubois, Fitzroy and Tessier to produce their dream yacht: sleek, sophisticated and impressive under sail.
The push for a single level between bridge, saloon and cockpit, combined with ultra-sleek aesthetics, nudged the Dubois design team into new territory. “To get good visibility from the helmstations we had to work hard to lower the accommodation as much as possible, while keeping an open feeling” adds McKeon.
The interior, styled and drawn by Remi Tessier , features a combination of bleached timbers and white leather which results in clean modern lines and provides bright comfortable living areas.

Fitzroy Yachts Zefira
The sea trial was pubblished on Superyacht 31 – spring 2012
Zefira S/Y is one of those few yachts that became an attraction for yacht enthusiasts and professionals well before she hit the water.
This yacht was designed and built with the experience and passion for sailing boats her owners demonstrated from the start as well as a naval engineering and a project design team from Ed Dubois studio for the exterior, while Remi Tessier was responsible for all the interiors. Zefira was built in a yard which enjoys a worldwide reputation for the construction of large sailing yachts.
With such an opening introduction one can expect nothing less than something absolutely extraordinary, where the term used must be read in its best meaning to underscore something that has really nothing of the ordinary. We had the pleasure of talking with the owners who are currently sailing on their yacht after they had carried out important work in the design phase with the project team to define specific guidelines and details.
Beyond the highly involving dialogue which ensued with flowing examples of their own sailing experience and passion, we managed to grasp and better understand the idea behind the project which began with a seven metre sloop and gradually developed in the course of the following 40 years of which many were spent at sea. Putting words to emotion and feelings is never easy to do and more so when they are other people’s. In this case however everything was a lot easier for us thanks to our interviewee’s eloquent communicative capability.
The first point our attention was brought to was that Zefira is the largest sailing y
acht ever designed by Dubois with no fly bridge and built by Fitzroy Yachts in New Zealand. This may strike our readers as a mere detail, but it is in fact one of the principal fundamentals outlining this project because it translates into flowing external lines and a unique profile when observed sideways on.
The choice of doing without a fly bridge is somewhat unusual since up until recently a “fly” had been widely accepted as a run of the mill thing to have on a sailing yacht beyond a given size, but which nevertheless, Zefira is proud to do without giving cause for, among others , the following comment volunteered by some of the designers not involved in the project: “The world of sailing now stands divided between before Zefira and after Zefira”.
Naturally enough this comment in particular is aimed at the yachts’ profile, which brings to a standstill what had become a consolidated practice on yachts this size. Aesthetics is principally why the owners decided to do without the fly option as well as for practical reasons they eloquently highlighted: without one on a 50 metre sailing boat there’s a complete total view of both what lies ahead up to the horizon and of the sail plan.
Moreover using a higher windswept and sun scorched horizontal plane rather than the main deck itself is by its very nature something destined to be exploited only sporadically and quite correctly in their opinion doesn’t justify having one.
The thought behind the whole project as the requests submitted to both designers and yard indicated, were to enjoy a pure thorough bred for its performing lines and technical contents, capable of offering the sort of space and commodities expected when cruising extensively in all weather conditions. At a first glance the goal seems to have been easily achieved, but if we then go into an in-depth analysis, the comments volunteered by project designers earlier seems surely appropriate. The husband and wife team (the owners) followed up on construction work from the initial stages to completion, working through the more important phases in close contact with the professional teams involved.
According to the owners the best part was witnessing the step by step progress of such an enterprise. We can understand the reasons why and genuinely hope that in the future such desire will generate the construction of other such extraordinary ships.
Several International prizes for design and technical contents have been awarded to Zefira. Dubois Naval Architects’ studio is proud of the recognitions bestowed since this is the largest sailing yacht project without a “fly” they’ve ever made so far and also for the passion and creativity expressed time and time again by the owners who incidentally had been the previous owners of another Dubois project built by Alloy Yachts: Kokomo of London (now Nubero Blau). The challenge taken on by the studio was one that meant blending the huge experience acquired by the owners to innovative aesthetics, with a hull capable of delivering the sea-keeping qualities and performance requested.
The owners wished for a boat that could be another home from home: spacious, with a project design that looked ahead into the future. For this reason the design team was invited by the owners to pay them a visit and to take a look at their house to better understand what they wanted.
The choice of the yard was principally dictated by delivery times even if Fitzroy Yachts had been chosen also in function of preceding work carried out from Dubois projects.
Among some of the clever solutions highlighted by the owners in the course of our conversation we wish to mention the ease in steering they experienced and handling the yacht, of course aided by electronics and important data communication systems capable of monitoring and performing many of the required manoeuvres without hindering visibility.
The rig which is capable of carrying up to 3,000 square metres of canvass is per se a very interesting technical achievement inasmuch as it sports a 63.50 metre mast and can still be defined as being “light”. Obviously there’s a carbon fibre mast and boom, as well as fibre stays that have been purposely chosen to reduce weight high above the waterline which translates into less draught and better performance in breezes.
All of the choices adopted for Zefira mean she is very competitive on the race track even against racers and in spite of the many commodities she carries with her. As for the interiors and much of the work put in by Remi Tessier designer and the co-owner they enhanced an undoubted feeling of both tranquillity and elegance.
Gauged chromatic variety meets the discerning eye as it takes in lighter and darker shades of handcrafted woodwork placed without ever causing excessive contrast, followed by polished steel elements and ad hoc lighting which enhances relaxation throughout every area. The space chosen to house each piece of furniture, is fruit of careful study that has contributed into ensuring an uncompromised degree of comfort in the owners’ suite which is situated in the stern and in each of the three guest cabins as well.
One is a twin while the other two are double each one of them sports its own private bathroom. The crew quarters are situated in the bow area and with space for a lounge and crew mess room, which translates into staff’s quality living standards on board. The yacht’s convivial areas are also well distributed and large to ensure adequate privacy to guests and owners alike.
The electronics and navigation aids installed are the most modern on the market, with data and alarm control systems and displays in each of the two external command /control stations as well as on the bridge deck as can be expected on a state of the art ship such as this. Dictated by reasons of space we have to limit our text to that which has so far been described even when the meeting with Zefira’s owners was so stimulating we were prompted to go further.
Since both of them described Zefira as being a point of arrival but of departure too, we wish them to continue their research work in the yachting field and to offer us, who knows what other input and ideas in the future. For further information please contact: Angelo Colombo
