However, what is likely is that you will finish your yacht rental vacation in the same location that you started. For example, the majority of  British Virgin Island yacht charters will begin and end in St Thomas, while for Antigua yacht charters , it'll be the iconic English Harbour.

The best time to visit the Caribbean is generally December to April, when it's a little cooler and less humid. But the best month to visit can differ depending on the island, budget and interests you have. For example, some yacht charter guests may decide to visit May to June and late November, when weather is still fantastic but there are fewer crowds.

We advise booking your Caribbean yacht rental at least three months in advance to ensure you get the yacht you desire. The longer you leave it, the fewer choices you will have to rent in the Caribbean.

For your Caribbean superyacht charter, you will need to provide a completed charter agreement and 50% of the charter fee as a deposit. This is payable once the contract has been signed.

When booking a Caribbean yacht rental, do keep in mind the costs that aren't included in the base rate, namely VAT and the APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance). The APA is usually paid in advance of the charter and is commonly set at 30% of the charter fee. This allowance covers expenses such as fuel, berthing, food and drinks, as well as any special requests.

The Windward islands

Windward Islands located at the southern end of the Caribbean island chain and stretch for over 300 miles to the south-eastern end of the Caribbean Sea. The Windward Islands are simply called so due to their position as they are exposed to the northeast trade winds. For experienced sailors, it can be right choice to sail among the four main islands: Martinique, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and Grenada. They lay far apart each other allowing open ocean sailing and while steady easterly trade winds, make passages north or south easy. With constant 12 to 25 knots wind, Caribbean sailing is among best in the world. In some cases trade winds look like refreshing tonic to the tropical heat. There is minor seasonal variation, although the second half of the year, the wet season, is slightly warmer and rainier. The best time for sailing in the Caribbean may be the first half of the year. At this time the temperatures usually range between 81°F (27°C) and 95°F(35°C). Annual rainfall averages about 40 to 50 inches (1016 to 1270 mm). Keep in mind, that nearly every island had been severely damaged by hurricane activity in its recent history.

English is the most widespread language all around the islands, plus many of the people speak French and Dutch on the St Martin Island. Both English-based and French-based Creole are also spoken. The prevailing currency is The East Caribbean dollar. But St Martin is odd man out again, circulating the Netherlands Antilles guilder in the Dutch area and the Euro in the French region. Nevertheless, the US dollar is widely accepted throughout the islands.

Besides, as in the rest of the Caribbean, music is also always a big part of local life. The Time of Year to Charter a Yacht in the Caribbean:

The main Caribbean sailing season runs from November through to July. The Caribbean primary high season is from mid-December to March, when the winter escapees from North America and Europe arrive in their greatest numbers. The hurricane season is from late July to early October, although hurricanes are in general rare in the southern Caribbean. Unfortunately, they can be prevalent around Cuba, Bahamas and the east coast of the U.S. every few years. This is the least expensive time for chartering in the Caribbean and there are some really good deals are available. However, as well as running the risk of storms, this time of year also tends to be associated with lighter (or non-existent) winds.

As with many boating locations the Caribbean shoulder season, in this case from April to July, is also a great time to charter a boat as there are less shore based visitors, some lovely settled sunny weather, and warm yet steady breeze. The Caribbean is made up of many different multi-nation (and multi-cultural) volcanic islands. There are amazing sailing grounds stretching from Cuba and Jamaica in the west, through the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, The Virgin Islands, The Leeward Islands and the Windward Islands, finishing with Trinidad and Tobago off the coast of Venezuela.

How to get to the Caribbean

There are direct flights from the UK and the US to Barbados, Jamaica, St Lucia and Antigua. Some Caribbean islands require a connecting flight as they have small airports which cannot handle large aeroplanes. Across the Caribbean, many islands have private jet facilities with fantastic runways.

What is the currency in the Caribbean?

Various currencies are used in the Caribbean. For instance, in Anguilla, Dominica, Grenada, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent, the Grenadines and Antigua, the East Caribbean dollar is the currency. Jamaica, Barbados, the Cayman Islands and the Bahamas have their very own currency. US dollars are accepted on most of the islands however the ATMs tend to have only the local currency.

Language spoken

There are four main languages spoken in the Caribbean, French, Spanish, Dutch and English. English is the first or second language and is mostly used when tourists visit. The official language of Haiti is Haitian Creole while Papiamento is used in Curacao, Bonaire and Aruba. Different creoles and local patois are also spoken on the various islands.

Time Zone in the Caribbean

Two time zones are used in the Caribbean. GMT -5 and GMT -4. Daylight saving time is implemented in many countries including Bermuda, Cuba, Haiti, the Bahamas including the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Visas and customs immigration

British and American tourists do not need visas if they are staying in the Caribbean for less than 90 days. It’s advisable to check the exact requirements for the countries you intend visiting. American tourists are still not allowed to visit Cuba although this may change in the future.

What to consider medical/health wise when chartering a superyacht in the Caribbean

There aren’t any extra medical issues for travelers in the Caribbean but check with your travel agent for any current warnings. The most common are complications form insect bites, jelly fish stings, cuts from coral and heart-related illnesses.

Caribbean Yachting Season

The Caribbean high season for yacht charters runs from mid-December to early May, with Christmas and New Year’s the most popular and busiest times of the year. But due to the islands’ locations near the equator, temperatures remain ideal throughout the year, making off-season charters just as enjoyable.

One of the lovely things about the Caribbean is that the temperatures remain consistent throughout the year; however, there are some other weather considerations that you will want to factor in when making your caribbean yachting vacation plans. Read More....

Vacations here are most popular between November and July.

If you are thinking of a megayacht, you will want to keep in mind that many of these private yachts which are Caribbean based in winter leave in the late spring and early summer months. They will return again in early winter; however, this does limit their availability. To charter a mega yacht, you will want to make sure that you do so well in advance.

Motor, sail, or catamaran yachts, on the other hand, often have selections available year round. Holidays like Christmas, New Year’s, and Easter do need to be planned for as early as possible as these are very popular charter times.

The best bet for island hopping in the Caribbean is going among the territories of the American, British and Spanish Virgin Islands, which are sometimes just a few miles away from each other, and even sometimes visible from another. The close to each other “Windward Islands” at the very eastern part of the Caribbean, which are mostly governed by the supranational federation of states called the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, the British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines, all of which use the same currency), are also known worldwide for their magnificent sailing possibilities. 

Fat fish and fast boats create happiness under, in, and on the water

In these waters, time is spent most felicitously when fishing, diving, swimming or surfing. The water in the Caribbean simultaneously provides nourishment, interest, sports and activities, and a comfortable cooling element when the heat gets to be too much. There are, for example, promising coastal areas and coral reefs off of the island Tobago, whose waters are so filled with life due to the warm Gulfstream and cool Atlantic current create the perfect conditions for the large fish varieties tarpon, bonefish, barracuda, marlin, mackerel, tuna, and swordfish. Los Roques, a 40-island and 200-sandbank Venezuelan archipelago north of Caracas, is home not only those fish varieties, but also duck fish, trumpet fish, crayfish, and sea urchins. However, the entire Caribbean Sea’s wealth of big fish such as sharks, marlin, sailfish, swordfish and tuna makes it a unique place for “Big Game Fishing”. An especially popular method of fishing is “chunking” or “chumming”, in which live bait, such as mackerel, is used to attract larger fish species. Guided deep-sea fishing charters with motorboats are offered from almost any island, but the Bahamas (Find a sailing route suggestion for Bahams here), Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic are particularly known for this activity. Divers have an equally large underwater playground with the Caribbean under their fins. In the Lesser Antilles and the so-called “special community” of the Netherlands, the waters around the 290 square kilometer island Bonaire, off the coast of Venezuela, have been known as a diving Mecca par excellence since the 1970s. The local Bonaire Marine Park has been a nature reserve since 1997, and its clear waters and healthy reefs attract 50,000 divers per year to the dive sites Angel City, 1000 Steps, and the Wreck of the Hilma Hooker. Also recommended for underwater excursions are the islands Grenada - Sailing route suggestion for Grenada , Sint Maarten, Saba, Sint Eustatius, Aruba, Curaçao, the Cuban Isla de la Juventud and Cayo Largo, and the Samaná Peninsula on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic.

Italian Captain Giovanni Soldini steers one of two tillers at the stern, always on the “uphill” side, as the boat heels over modestly. No wheel or even dual-wheel helm here. This is a full-on race boat with zero concessions to creature comfort, to the point where the carbon-fiber daggerboard under the central hull reverberates up through the cabin to the mast and over to the outrigger hulls. It first sounds like a whistle and then becomes a scream as our speed picks up.

Soldini’s crew of six, now making their third trip around the globe, needs to adapt to that tune to be able to sleep in the two tiny bunks below deck.

This Multi70 often wins the races it enters, but this year’s Transpac has posed more than the typical challenge of man against the sea, thanks to customs agents in Mexico who confiscated a shipping container full of equipment, including the racing foils and sails. With no hope of liberating the container before the race started for the big trimarans on July 1, Soldini and his crew had to set sail with delivery equipment only.

That kind of performance presents specific challenges solved in partnership with Maserati, a team-up that began 10 years ago when the late Sergio Marchionne, the auto titan credited with the turnarounds of Fiat and Chrysler, noticed Soldini setting transoceanic records. Marchionne offered a collaboration that helped this racing yacht become one of the fastest in its class.

“Maserati’s input has always been important,” Soldini told Robb Report. “We worked with them to solve a whole range of challenges, perhaps the most important one was aerodynamics.” The engineers at Maserati Centro Stile improved the trim of the three rudders, synchronizing the rudders to reduce water resistance and enhance performance. The sensors Maserati developed to facilitate the gains is the same technology the carmaker uses to dial in automotive steering and alignment.

The Multi70 also only weighs about 15,500 pounds, mostly because every ounce counts on an offshore racing machine. That’s despite a conversion to electric power that employs dense 15 kWh batteries developed at Maserati’s innovation lab in Modena.

On our sail, Soldini uses the electric motor to pull into and out of San Pedro in near silence, noting that the electric system has been much more reliable than old-school diesel engines. 

The yacht also has some other notable innovations. Three kilowatts of solar panels, built in Italy, double as grip tape on the Multi70’s slippery surfaces. They can replenish the 20 to 30 percent of charge that is used to pull out of a harbor in only two hours of sailing. A tiny wind turbine serves as a backup generator in case of darker days due to weather or low winter sun.

I am only there for the day, so experience just a small taste of what the race, a flat-out 24/7 experience, would be like for the team. Compared to the 42-foot Jeanneau and Hunter 410 monohulls I grew up sailing, the Multi70 builds up speed much more quickly. At the 16-knot speeds we’re experiencing, my childhood boats would be heeled to the extreme.

But this trimaran’s three adjustable hulls are rarely off level. That kind of impressive side-to-side stability then combines with a bow-to-stern length of 70 feet that lets the boat skate from crest to crest, over all but the deepest the troughs, keeping the sails perfectly positioned to maximize wind—even if the Los Angeles coastline’s idyllic conditions leave us wanting more speed.

With the crew working hard in preparation for the start of the Transpac, I help crank up the mainsail (and end up feeling it the next day). Despite the luxury connotations of the Maserati name, the cramped, spartan quarters mean everyone is always within earshot. Given the Maserati logos plastered everywhere, we joke about a lack of martinis or caviar.

For Soldini, the Maserati Multi70 is more than just about racing. He calls it a “permanent laboratory” that will continue to improve with innovations launched by the carmaker.

The one takeaway I have from the afternoon’s sail is that, despite its futuristic design, the boat still has to contend with the unknowns of ocean racing. If something goes wrong, it could happen hundreds of miles from the nearest rescuer. In that sense, this shares the same thrills and pitfalls as old-time sailing, but at much faster speeds.

Update: The Maserati Multi70 finished second for an elapsed time of 4 days, 23 hours, 55 minutes. It’s the eighth fastest time in Transpac history.

The ARKEA ULTIM CHALLENGE – Brest starts from Brest, France on January 7 and will be the first ever solo race round the world on giant Ultim trimarans, the biggest and fastest ocean-going sailboats in the world.

Unlike speed records which depart in ideal weather windows for a race against the clock, six solo skippers will push the boundaries of singlehanded racing with class boats that are a maximum length of 32 meters and a maximum width of 23 meters.

As a reference, the solo speed record was set in 2017 by François Gabart (FRA) on the 30m Macif trimaran in a time of 42d 14h 40m 15s for an average speed of 21.08 knots. This yacht has been rebranded and will be raced by Marchand.

Coville is the skipper who has completed the most round-the-world passages on a multihull. He competed in five, completed the loop three times and was once the record holder around the world (49 days and 3 hours in 2016).

“We need to find the right approach to sustain the right level on this unique and singular challenge,” noted Coville. “There is a very big psychological dimension. We are constantly seeking to work at or near our limits, to go beyond normal effort levels despite the accumulated lack of sleep, the risk, the frustrations, the anxiety, the ice.

“I like to tell myself that we are not racing but that we are on a tough expedition. There are days when you burst into tears, days when you scream, days when you go crazy. You end up being a mix between euphoria, exhaustion, and elation.”

Five rules from the Sailing Instructions: • The start line is kept open for 168 hours and the finish line is closed after an elapsed time of 100 days after the start time, that is to say 16th April 2024.

• The skippers can communicate and exchange with their teams on shore, so they have the freedom to get weather information and be routed by their team on shore and get technical help and advice to help with technical problems.

• The solo skippers can stop but there are two distinct operations. A technical stop is unassisted and requires the sailor to drop anchor, take a mooring, or tie up alongside an anchored or moored boat with no external help. There is no time penalty for a technical stop. But for a technical stopover (escale technique) where one or more crew or technical team come on board to help, there is a mandatory 24 hours minimum. This does not apply to the start port of Brest where all means are authorized to reach or leave the port within a radius of 50 miles.

• For the first time in ocean racing, zones where there are known to be a high concentration of whales and sea mammals are determined. Establishing these zones should both protect the marine wildlife and reduce the chance of a collision. These zones are around the Azores, the Canaries, south of South Africa, the Kerguelens, and parts of the Antarctic.

• There are ice exclusion zones to protect the skippers and their boats.

The massive macif 100′ trimaran.

Macif is one of several 100′ (30m) trimarans belonging to the unique Ultime class of yachts designed solely to smash ocean racing records.

In a 1956 movie, Phileas Fogg (played by the quintessential Brit David Niven) won a bet that he could travel “Around the World in 80 Days.” The “most punctual man alive” traveled by all modes of transportation, including trains, steamers, and even elephants. The challenge so intoxicated the sail-loving French that the Jules Verne Trophy was created, named for the author of the 1873 novel upon which the movie is based. Bruno Peyron first and narrowly accomplished the feat in 1993, aboard the catamaran Explorer , in a time of 79 days, 6 hours.

At least nine times this amazing record has been shortened, most recently in 2017 by Francis Joyon, who nearly reduced by half the elapsed time; he and his crew claimed the Jules Verne Trophy by finishing in 40 days, 23 hours. But as offshore sailors never shy from adding pages to the Guiness Book of World Records , that same year 34-year-old François Gabart ticked off 27,859 miles in 42 days, 16 hours—solo! This slashed 6 days and 10 hours off the solo record set by Thomas Coville a year earlier.

Macif employs hi tech for high speeds

Gabart’s ride is a member of the newly emerged Ultime class of 100 ‘ (30m) multihulls, whose sole purpose is to break more records (it grows tedious with times measured between hours of the clock, between the three great capes, and so on). Macif , named for the insurance company that paid the $25 million tab, was designed by VPLP (see “Flying Machines, Part II,” PBB No. 91) and built by CDK Technologies in France, in 2015. The boat, with wave-piercing bows, is carbon, cooked in a 35m (225 ‘ ) autoclave. The rotating wing mast can be canted to weather.

Check these stunning numbers, first of the yacht: LOA 30m/98 ‘ 5 “ , beam 21m/68 ‘ 11 “ , draft 4.5m/14 ‘ 9 “ , mast height 35m/114 ‘ 9 “ , displacement 14 tons, sail area upwind 430m²/4,628 sq ft and downwind 650m²/6,996 sq ft.

And now for her solo nonstop circumnavigation from November 4 to December 17, 2017: 42 days, 40 minutes, 35 seconds, max speed 47 knots, average speed 27.2 knots, max distance in a day 851 nm.

Of course, records are meant to be broken, and if the holder doesn’t improve, someone else will take over. Not wasting a moment, Macif underwent a six to seven months refit by CDK and its subsidiary in Lorient, Keroman Technologies . According to reports, and with the assistance of MerConcept , the company Gabart created to manage his and other campaigns, optimization included new foil casings, new rudders, new horizontal foils on all three rudders, L-shaped retractable foils on the floats, or amas, a modified centerboard, and a lighter-weight sandwich boom. Gabart, speaking to sail-world.com: “We realized that it is very interesting to sail the boat a little more ‘on its nose’ or flat when foiling. To achieve this, we moved the boat’s centre of gravity, by moving considerably heavy items, such as the engine for example…I think that it is going to improve our airborne performance.”

Back to the shop for upgrades

She was relaunched last July to compete in the Route du Rhum from France to Guadeloupe, in the Caribbean, losing to another Ultime trimaran, IDEC Sport , skippered by Francis Joyon, by 10 hours. So, after returning to France last January on a cargo ship, she went back into the yard for attention to some systems that had failed. Performance is a moving target.

Keroman’s facility has added a 40m x 10m x 7m (131 ‘ x 33 ‘ x 23 ‘ ) autoclave capable of heating to 120°C (248°F). The crossbeams were strengthened, an aerodynamic canvas added to the bow, and the appendage controls improved.

Next up: the double-handed Brest Atlantiques that begins November 3, 2019, and covers some 14,000 nm from Brest to Brest, rounding two islands in the South Atlantic, one off Rio de Janeiro and the other off Cape Town, South Africa.

What Is a Trimaran?

A trimaran is a multi hulled sailboat with three individual hulls; the main hull ( vaka ) and a pair of outrigger hulls ( amas ). These smaller outrigger hulls are attached to the main hull using beams. 

While trimarans have a rich history dating back nearly four millennia, these types of sailboats have only gained popularity in the late 1900s and early 2000s. 

Trimarans are primarily used as personal boats for sailing enthusiasts or racing. These sailboats draw their versatility from their lightweight design, making them faster and easier to handle at sea when compared to single-hulled boats (monohulls). Additionally, the three hulls also contribute to better stability, making it very hard to capsize (although more likely than a cat according to this study)

Trimarans come in various sizes, and some can be as small as 19 feet (5.8 meters) in length, while others go up to 60 feet (18meters). They’re also used for different purposes. Most trimarans are used for racing and recreational purposes, although some units are still used as ferries.

As with all things, to find out which is the best we need to understand what it will be used for. There is a big difference in requirements between a boat used for day sailing compared to offshore around the world sailing.

French yachtsman Franck Cammas’ high profile ocean racing exploits over the past two decades have made him a household name in his home country. Likewise, he earned himself a unique position in The Ocean Race annals when in 2011-12 he became the only skipper to claim overall victory in the crewed around-the-world race on his first attempt. After first starting sailing in a singlehanded Optimist dinghy, Cammas went on to train at the renowned French offshore training academy in Port-La-Forêt. In 1997, at the age of 24, he won the prestigious French Solitaire du Figaro solo offshore race. A year later – and with the support of what would become his longtime sponsor Groupama – he made the huge step up into the ORMA 60 ocean racing trimaran class. As well as winning the the doublehanded transatlantic Transat Jacques Vabre in both 2001 (with Swiss co-skipper Stève Ravussin) and in 2003 (with fellow countryman Franck Proffit), Cammas was crowned ORMA world champion on no less than five occasions. In 2010 he won the solo transatlantic Route du Rhum, as well as the Jules Verne Trophy for setting the fastest time for a non-stop fully-crewed circumnavigation of the world. In 2017 Cammas led the French America’s Cup challenge Groupama Team France in the Cup’s 35th edition in Bermuda. 2020 saw the French Sailing Federation name Cammas ‘French Sailor of the Decade’ in recognition of his achievements so far. In recent years – along with French yachtsman Charles Caudrelier – Cammas co-skippered Gitana Team’s 100-foot Ultim trimaran Maxi Edmond de Rothschild to victory in all eight of the races they competed in – including a comprehensive win in the 2021 Transat Jacques Vabre. Closeup: The Arkema 4 Racing Trimaran

During my transfer cruise of an Excess 11 catamaran from Les Sables to Le Havre we´ve had to make a stopover in Brest due to bad weather and a case of serious sea sickness within my crew. It was there when, on one day, wind was easing a bit for a tiny time frame of some 30 minutes and I was able to cast off from the fuel station where I found refuge (and a free berth) to land the cat vis-à-vis at a proper berth alongside, not blocking the fuel station anymore. When we got up the other day, looking out of the saloon windows, I saw a huge trimaran berthed right behind us. ARKEMA 4!

And it was not just limited to this one trimaran as over the day more and more of these racing machines began to dock alongside in Brest marina, which was fascinating and a great occasion to take a look at cutting edge sailing machinery. Now that I was acting captain of a multihull myself, doing my first miles on a twin-hulled boat , I found it very intriguing to see how far this concept can be pushed and where possible differences might be.

Meet ARKEMA 4, a 50 feet racing trimaran

After drinking my morning coffee and getting dressed finally, I swung out to the pontoon and strolled around the boat. There was buzzling activity as apparently the crew having arrived so late in the night left the boat and a new crew stored their luggage on the jetty to take over. It was a fascinating look.

The trimaran is very, very sleek. Measuring 50 feet in length, which is little more than 15 metres and a width of little less than 15 metres. A racing square. This cat has been built over a period of two full years which shows the determination and care that goes into a boat like this. ARKEMA 4 is skippered by Quentin Vlamynk, once the youngest skipper (28 years of age) in this sailing series, but a serious salt by himself. He is head of a pro-team consisting of a technical crew, staff, co-skippers and care takers as well as a media crew. ARKEMA 4 is part of the Ocean Fifty Pro-Sailing Series, formerly known as Multi50.

It´s a fascinating sight and so much to see. This is what I love about sailing in French waters: You can meet so many interesting people, see so many special boats and yachts and can start so exciting conversations with the guys sailing them. No matter if they are private circumnavigators doing their own business or the stars of sailing, like these guys. So I went over and asked if I could take pictures: “Be our guest!”, the boat captain told me and smiled. Now, let´s go!

Built for maximum speed

ARKEMA 4 is kind of a brand-new trimaran incorporating some nice new ideas which make it different to most of the other boats. What can be seen immediately are the two foils in the floats and a huge forward removable daggerboard. Both are retractable for reducing unwanted drag when necessary. I reckon these are made of carbon of course.

The ARKEMA 4 sports a classy rigging. I couldn´t spot any lines or blocks which would indicate a rotating mast-system but I guess a racing trimaran in this class would have one. Everything was faired in sleek, aerodynamic panels trying to even further reduce every bit of drag created by vortexes in high speed sailing mode. Look at the cockpit: It´s as low as possible to allow a low boom and increase mainsail area. Speaking of which this trimaran has plenty of.

I checked their website and there it is said that the cockpit glass is made of a new material, Shield up Flex PMMA glazing that can withstand even hardest pounding by hard hitting waves. Thinking back to the standard acrylic glazing of my old OLIVIA this is clearly is rocket science. The ARKEMA 4 also sports a quite interesting energy management system, which consists of photovoltaic modules allocated all over the trimaran and latest technology Lithium-Ion batteries, this boat can increase energy storage of up to 50% to a prior version making it self-sustainable and not emitting one gram of CO2.

High speed tri-racing: How is this feeling like?

That these behemoths are going fast like hell cannot just be seen by looking at the space-fighter design and sleek form of the boat. You can see the effects of high speed all over the boat: The foil covering the trimaran in their sponsor´s colors is peeling off at all frontal edges of the outrigger beams, large chunky of thick wrapping is simply torn off.

Well, no wonder: These trimarans go fast even in the slightest of puffs. High speed racing with up to 30 knots SOG are possible, at one occasion, as skipper Vlamynck tells, they clocked in at whopping 39 knots upwind (!) leaving Toulon. This is absolutely incredible! As generally speaking upwind performance in multihulls is considered being inferior to a mono, this figure is absolutely exciting showing the potential of such a boat.

Asking if I could come inside and take a few pics, the crew was very friendly, but refused. I knew that this answer would be coming before I asked, of course, as competition is tight and all crews want to protect their tiny secrets and tricks. It would have been very interesting to see the berths for the off-crew, the galley and the WC-arrangement as this is always very interesting. Fighter-Jet technology meets Viking-sailing

Anyway, what fascinates me most is the fact that sailing itself is a very old, almost ancient, technology. Man has been on the seas since he came into being and seafaring was, still is, the motor of our civilization. In this, one can still see the old Papyros-rafts of the Egyptians, the Latin-sail of the Venetians or the sleek lines of the Clipper Ships even in a high tech carbon-monster like ARKEMA 4.

It is still a crew of dedicated men and women working with their bare hands, pulling lines and ropes, running through pulleys and blocks. Ancient technology beamed to the 21 st century. Although I wasn´t allowed to get onboard and take pics from the inside, I managed to sneek into ARKEMA´s cockpit standing high up on the jetty (during falling tide). Thanks to the great zoom of my Huawei´s great camera I got a peak onto the large winches and the keyboard of the running rigging.

Amazing how I as a very, very ordinary sailor can almost instantly determine which line works which sail and where to pull and veer to trim the sails. Also something that fascinates me about sailing, this universal language, no words needed, just a look onto a rope, following its path up the mast to understand which function it has. In theory, anyone who can sail, would be sailing this trimaran too. Well … in theory. We all fly in planes regularly (well, not so much anymore apoparently …) but I reckon only a tiny percentage of us won´t be lost in the cockpit of an A350. Different in boats though.

We strolled over to the other trimarans of which the whole fleet was now mooring in Brest to try and spot some differences, like the steering positions which have sometimes been solved nicely (and quite protected from aggressive spray, sometimes not so much) and tried to figure out which of them trimarans would be our favourite.

Ocean Fifty Pro-Sailing Tour in Brest

Now back in Germany for some weeks I followed the Ocean Fifty Sailing Series and I am amazed seeing Skipper Vlamynck and his ARKEMA 4 team finishing the overall series in second place. Congratulations for that, quite a nice success for a young man like him, standing his ground in high seas high speed racing against a wolfpack of such names as Erwan Le Roux or Armel Tripon.

There is of course one name that turned out unbeatable, at last in this year´s edition of Ocean Fifty Pro Sailing Series and that is Sam Goodchild. The mastermind of LEYTON trimaran managed to outpace even ARKEMA 4 and is the overall winner. I had the pleasure of talking to Sam Goodchild some years ago about the Solitaire du Figaro , a fascinating legendary race and cradle of so many pro sailing stars in France and the world.

All of those seven teams I guess will now return to their sheds. Boats will be repaired, maintained and brought up to the next level with tweaks and new equipment to be ready for 2022 edition of the Ocean Fifty Pro Sailing Series. Now that I have seen these great machines with my own eyes, spoke to their crews (although just short, but nevertheless …) I will have an eye on this fascinating niche of the sailing sport for sure.

Inspirational …

Thinking back to this encounter with the three-hulled Formula 1-racers of the oceans I can remember that they inspired me in sailing “my” own catamaran which I was taking from the Les Sables d´Olonne to Germany. The next day it seemed that weather would be good enough to get out into the English Channel with a cruising catamaran and so we decided to take off. Looking on this picture and remembering that fateful early morning, still dark, 14-17 knots wind in the marina, rain pouring down … gives me shiver still!

This manoeuvre was and still is the most exciting, the worst in terms of tension, the most complicated in terms of wind, pressure and drift of my whole sailing career. In front of me a trimaran, behind me a trimaran, next no me vis-à-vis boats moored in second row, further minimizing space to steer my boat through. I cannot imagine the catastrophe if I would have hit one of these …

Chinese sailor Guo Chuan is planning to go through the North East Passage in the 97ft trimaran that Francis Joyon sailed round the world

What’s the ideal yacht for attempting to set a record transiting the North East Passage?

You might think a steel yacht, or aluminium perhaps, something that resists crushing by ice, a sturdy craft equipped sensibly, if not beautifully, with a pilothouse or other shelter on deck.

You mightn’t think: the best yacht would be a round the world racing trimaran.

But Chinese sailor Guo Chuan did. He has just bought has bought Francis Joyon’s 97ft trimaran IDEC. Surprisingly, he didn’t buy it to better Joyon’s lone round the world record – or at least not for now – but to set a record, the first officially recognised speed record, for going through the North East Passage.

Guo Chuan, former Volvo Ocean Race crew and the first from his country to sail solo round the world, took over the Nigel Irens-designed trimaran in La Trinité sur Mer last month and will train with Joyon throughout April before renaming the yacht Qingdao.

The project follows nearly two years’ research on the feasibility of attempting the North East Passage from Murmansk to Providenya. The World Speed Sailing Record Council has agreed to adjudicate on the first attempt of this world record challenge, skippered by Guo Chuan with an international crew from the UK, France, Norway and Russia.

After attempting to set a North East Passage record, Guo plans to sail along the maritime silk road from China back to Europe. His team says: “Guo has no plan to sail round the world with this boat yet, but we do have plans for the next three years.”

But going through the North East Passage is not guaranteed in one year. The route can often be impeded by ice, with every possibility of having to spent two seasons making the long journey through the Bering Strait. The map below shows the remoteness and length of this most difficult ‘sea voyage’.

Who is Guo Chuan?

Guo, 50, is an aeronautical engineer who got the bug for sailing back in 2000 when he joined friends from the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club for a day on the water. In 2008 he was picked to be the media crewmember on the Irish-Chinese Volvo Ocean Race entry Green Dragon and in 2012/3 he set a record as the first Chinese person to sail solo round the world, sailing a Class 40.

The passage from Novaya Zemlya or Franz Josef Land to the Bering Strait was first completed in 1878 by Swedish scientist Nils Adolf Nordenskjöld in the ship Vega.

The first modern yacht to do so was Apostle Andrew, skippered by Nicolai Litau from the Moscow Adventure Club in 1999, who sailed from Murmansk back to St Petersburg.

It is now commonly used by the people of Russia as the shortest water route between Russian ports in Europe and the Far East, and this passage offers a saving of 5,000 miles. It is, however, carefully guarded, and taking a Russian crew is often a precondition of gaining the necessary permissions.

Anthony Churchill, a co-founder of the race, passes away

Anthony Churchill, who helped to initiate the first edition of the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race in 1973, has passed away.

It was Churchill, himself an ocean racer and the publisher of Yachting and Boating Weekly, along with Guy Pearce, a race promoter, who came up with the concept of a fully-crewed around the world race that followed the traditional square-rigger routes.

Following the single-handed, non-stop, Golden Globe Race in 1969, Churchill and Pearce published a brochure and canvassed support in the yachting community for a fully crewed race that would start and finish in Portsmouth, England, with stops in Cape Town, Sydney and Rio de Janeiro.

Several skippers indicated interest but there was no sponsor, organising body or yacht club willing to take up the cause.

With the Royal Navy and British Army acquiring a fleet of offshore yachts at that time for adventure training, the Royal Naval Sailing Association would eventually decide to run the race, and was able to secure sponsorship from the Whitbread brewery.

A total of 17 yachts with 167 crew would take the start of that first race in September 1973, on the waters off Portsmouth, England.

Churchill would continue in his career as a publisher, including Seahorse Magazine. In a promotion for one of his books, “Winston’s Island”, he is described as a man of many interests and accomplishments.

Anthony was a history scholar at Cambridge University and early jobs included financial journalism. He founded a publishing company with titles including Ski, Tennis, Subaqua Scene, and publications on horses, powerboats, canoeing, windsurfing, mountains, films, and plays. His own sport was ocean racing and the magazine ‘Seahorse’ is even today that sport’s bible.

Whilst studying at Cambridge, he visited Moscow and its university, defending the Open Market, as Chair of the University Explorers and Travellers Club, and was a representative of the Ballet Club. He was also captain of College Squash. 

A Trustee of Dimbola Museum, and the World Ship Trust, he chaired the ASTO Cowes Race meant for handicapped and young people who had not sailed before, and held events for Shakespeare, Omar Khayyam, Burns, Betjeman and Elgar. He started the Ventnor Piano Fund, and was Trustee of Island Concerts, and helped fund the Sea Scout’s RIB ‘Grom’ (named after the destroyer, sister to the Cowes-built ‘Blyskawica’, renowned for ‘saving’ Cowes from enemy bombing in the war).

“Anthony initiated the world’s first true Round the World Race, the Whitbread – now Volvo – race, and others such as the Financial Times Clipper Race. Racing for UK, Swiss, and Hong Kong teams, he sailed with many Olympic medallists. He helped finance an America’s Cup bid, and raced a decade on Sir Edward Heath’s Morning Clouds, winning the Sydney-Hobart yacht race as navigator.”

We celebrate his vision for a race that continues to evolve and attract the best sailors and athletes to take on one of the biggest challenges in sport.

Celebrations like never before in Guadeloupe for the Olympic Torch, transported via the ocean!

This Saturday will be etched in the memory for a long time. For the first time in history, the Olympic Torch shone in Guadeloupe. The day began with a majestic arrival aboard the Maxi Banque Populaire XI trimaran which crossed the Atlantic Ocean after leaving Brest on 7th June. It was eagerly awaited on the ACTe Memorial jetty by Tony Estanguet, Chairman of the Paris 2024 organising committee, who had come to attend the Olympic Torch Relay in the West Indies. It then illuminated all Guadeloupe’s many attractions with the Olympic Torch Relay sponsors, Coca-Cola, Banque Populaire and Caisse d’Epargne, who came together to celebrate the magic and values of the Olympic s in an incredibly joyful atmosphere.

A memorable arrival

Today witnessed an adventure that has never before been accomplished since the Olympic Torch Relay exists. On 7 th June in front of thousands of spectators, the Olympic Torch was taken aboard a maxi-trimaran, Maxi Banque Populaire XI, which is currently one of the quickest and highest performance boats, brimming with technology and innovations. It was sailed by Armel Le Cléac’h, the Vendée Globe record holder, and Sébastien Josse, both of whom are renowned skippers. They were accompanied by four legendary ambassadors, all symbols of French excellence, who were able to experience the exceptional adventure of crossing the Atlantic Ocean!

Marie-José Pérec, a triple Olympic gold medallist and a symbol of the success of overseas sportspeople, and Marine Lorphelin, a former Miss France, doctor and ambassador for the Olympic Torch Relay, took their places on the boat with multi-award-winning director Alexis Michalik and two-starred chef Hugo Roellinger. They brought the Olympic Torch to Guadeloupe when they docked early in the morning at the ACTe Memorial, where the sailors celebrate their arrival on the Route du Rhum race every four years. The boat’s arrival gave rise to a particularly warm reunion between its crew and the spectators, who turned out in force, including a special guest, Tony Estanguet, who was there to celebrate this moving moment and take part in the day’s celebrations.

Pride of place for Guadeloupe’s nature and history

While the members of the crew returned to terra firma and a well-deserved rest, the Olympic Torch was on the move as soon as it landed. And it was worth it: the route, drawn up in conjunction with local and regional authorities, combined the emblematic sporting venues, heritage and magnificent landscapes that make Guadeloupe a special place in the hearts of French people. After setting off from the ACTe Memorial in Pointe-à-Pitre, the Olympic Torch headed to the Gosier sports and culture centre.

Afterwards, it journeyed to Saint-François and the Pointe du Châteaux cape, the most visited site on the isle which offers unbeatable views over the surrounding islands. The Olympic Torch also called in on Saint-Claude, Basse-Terre and Le Moule, which is famous for its carnival. It also stopped at the CREPS in Guadeloupe, a centre of excellence where young promising sportspeople can continue their studies.

They may become tomorrow’s champions, just like Laura Flessel, the fencing athlete after whom the sports centre in Petit-Bourg is named, to which the Olympic Torch Relay paid a visit. The next part of the journey took place in the Baie des Saintes bay, which is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site, during a spectacular sequence. Back on the main island, the relay headed for Baie-Mahault and the Amédée Detraux velodrome where the celebration cauldron was lit.

Following in Laura Flessel’s footsteps, fencing enjoys the spotlight

Like on each stage, the spotlight was shone on a specific discipline. Today, it was fencing, given that Guadeloupe has contributed to France’s success in this sport. Symbolically, the collective relay organised by the French Federation of Fencing took place at Baie-Mahault in the Palais des Sports Laura Flessel sports complex, with none other than Laura Flessel herself as captain! A former minister, she still is the most successful Frenchwoman in her sport.

This relay recounted each of the stages in a fencing athlete’s career, from their beginnings to Olympic victory, under the watchful gaze of the Chairman of the Paris 2024 organising committee, Tony Estanguet. Among the 23 torchbearers were young foil swordsman Owen Richardson, emerging athlete Ileana Nunes de Sousa Noronha, enthusiast Pierre Elias Nahas and former athlete but now national referee and coach in Petit-Bourg, Marine Horn-Cosaque.

In addition to the collective relay, 124 people carried the Olympic Torch throughout the day, including many Guadeloupean celebrities. Indeed, Marie-José Pérec was the first to carry the Olympic Torch on Guadeloupean soil. The spectators were also able to applaud local sportspeople: Paralympic shooter Yann Jacques, triathlete Patrice Palmont, judoka Angelio Courtois and coach Hugo Thelier.

Among famous names from yesteryear were Raymonde Nebot, who was selected for the Olympic Games in Moscow (in 1980) and Los Angeles (in 1984), Christine Arron, a medallist in Athens (in 2004, in the 4 x 100 m relay) and Mickaël Gelabale, a member of the French basketball team in London (in 2012) and Rio (in 2016). It was Véronique Vatran who lit the celebration cauldron in Baie Mahault. This BMX enthusiast is actively involved in developing the sport in Guadeloupe via a number of initiatives.

Like on each stage, dozens of members of the general public also carried the Olympic Torch. They all shared life stories and commitments that are dear to the values of the Olympics. Among them were Frédérique Merlin, a teacher of young people with disabilities who works to prevent dropouts from school and to protect the environment, as well as Nicole Tripoli, who is the chairwoman of an association that supports people suffering from illnesses affecting their immune system (“Lupus Guadeloupe”).

The smiling faces and the infectious joy of Frédérique, Nicole and the other torchbearers contributed to ensuring this was an unforgettable day for everyone who participated. The celebrations will now continue in Martinique. The Maxi Banque Populaire XI trimaran will take to the seas again and head to Fort-de-France with Tony Estanguet on board as well as a new crew made up of overseas sportspeople Laura Flessel, Coralie Balmy, Kéni Pipérol-Dampied and Thomas Debierre. The festivities in the French West Indies will therefore continue, with the assurance of experiencing some more unforgettable moments

New Ocean Fifty Arkema trimaran: a genuine ocean racing racer! The construction of the Ocean Fifty Arkema started in September 2018, and launched in September 2020. The most fabulous yachts to charter this summer

There are an estimated 6,000 superyachts — vessels that are more than 100 feet long — at sea in 2024

As summer reaches its peak across the Northern Hemisphere, it’s hard to imagine a better way of spending a vacation than channeling your inner ship captain and sailing across the ocean.

In recent years, yacht companies have reported a boom in sales — far from the decline that many in the industry feared, due to both the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic realities of the Russia-Ukraine War.

“I spent my days [in 2020] doing worst-case scenarios and drawing up the budgets to go with them,” Giovanna Vitelli, chairwoman of Azimut|Benetti, the world’s largest yacht manufacturer, told the Economist in 2023.

Instead, her company reported a 23% growth in production value in 2023 —a reality that is not unique to just one yacht manufacturer. The luxury yacht market is expected to grow in value from $7.67 billion in 2023 to $17.33 billion by 2032, according to a recent report from Fortune Business Insights .

Analysts attribute the ships’ rise in popularity to the increasing number of extremely wealthy individuals . Yachts have long been considered a status symbol — a reality that has only increased as wealth becomes concentrated in the hands of a small group of high status individuals .

There are an estimated 6,000 superyachts —vessels that are more than 100 feet long — at sea as of this year. This is nearly quadruple the number of yachts seen in the ocean just three decades ago, according to Bloomberg .

Aside from an increase in popularity, the yacht industry has seen other changes in recent years. Increasingly, those in the market for a luxury ship are turning to alternate means of powering their vessels, as critics point to the excess emissions traditional yachts produce simply for recreational use.

In their 2024 report, Fortune Business Insights highlighted the growing trend of electrification as a significant area of growth in the coming years.

“A tough regulatory environment for traditional yachts and rising fuel prices will pave the way for the solid growth of electric yachts in the future,” the report reads. “Huge investments from various manufacturers and government support measures will accelerate the demand for electric yachts.”

Carinthia VII

Originally constructed in 2002, the award-winning Carinthia VII was recently remodeled and reimagined specifically for private charters. The 319-foot ship spans six decks and can accommodate up to 12 guests in eight staterooms. Among the ship’s amenities are two bars, a fully equipped gym and an outdoor projection screen that allows for an “immersive cinematic experience like no other.” The cost of chartering the Carinthia VII is $1,525,700 during both the winter and summer seasons.

The Lady S yacht boasts a number of exciting water toys, including jet skis, water skis, wakeboards and kayaks for athletic guests on the 305-foot ship. For those who prefer more indoor-oriented activities, however, you can also catch a film on the ship’s IMAX Dolby cinema — the first of its kind on any yacht in the world. Accommodating 12 guests, in seven cabins, the cost of chartering the Lady S begins at $1,743,328 a week.

The interior of the Ahpo yacht seems more reminiscent of a luxury hotel than a simple ship. Accommodating 16 guests and 36 crew members, the vessel features a full-size gym, a winter garden and a spa complete with a Himalayan salt sauna. The 378-foot long yacht was first manufactured in 2021 by the German shipyard Lürssen. Excited sailors can charter the Ahpo from superyacht broker Edmiston, beginning at $2,833,376 a week.

500EXP Para Bellum

This 154-foot-long yacht can accommodate up to 12 travelers in its six cabins, along with up to 10 crew members. The ship was specially designed to enable “guests a 360-degree experience and relationship with the sea” through its unique stern and sundeck that allow travelers to safely stand “almost at sea level,” according to its Italian manufacturer San Lorenzo . Interested travelers can rent the ship for $359,609 a week.

The Renaissance

The Renaissance lives up to its grandiose name by going beyond traditional private yachts and bridging the gap between a personal vehicle and a full-on cruise ship. The 367-foot long ship features five decks and can accommodate 36 guests in 19 cabins. The Renaissance’s amenities include a 19-seat movie theater, a sushi-bar, and a full spa deck featuring a wellness area, plunge pools and a hair salon. The cost of chartering the ship from Burgess Yachts ranges from $3,269,280 to $3,814,160 a week.

$2 million worth of cocaine seized by U.S. Coast Guard off boat in Caribbean

MIAMI, Fla. (CBS12) — Around 170 pounds worth of cocaine was offloaded in Miami Beach on Monday.

The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) said the drugs were intercepted off a boat in the Caribbean.

The cocaine was estimated to be worth more than $2 million. The USCG provided photos of the haul.

The haul comes after the Coast Guard offloaded an additional half ton of cocaine and hundreds of pounds of marijuana on June 5.

Pirates of the Caribbean Under Fire Again After More Guests Offended by Ride

Disneyland Resort’s Pirates of the Caribbean ride is under fire again as some guests have been made uncomfortable by another aspect of the ride. The discussion popped up just weeks after Disneyland Park removed Captain Jack Sparrow from Fantasmic!, which recently reopened after a devastating fire.

Pirates of the Caribbean opened in 1967, 12 years after Disneyland Park . Walt Disney Imagineering has changed the Adventureland attraction multiple times in the decades since and replicated those changes in versions of the ride in Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort , Disneyland Paris , and Tokyo Disneyland.

In the mid-2000s, the  Pirates of the Caribbean  film franchise made its way into the ride that started it all. Walt Disney Imagineers installed Captain Jack Sparrow animatronics, modeled after Johnny Depp , throughout the attractions worldwide.

About a decade later, Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort announced the most controversial change to Pirates of the Caribbean thus far. They changed a misogynist bride auction scene, turning objectified female animatronics into independent lady pirates.

Nostalgic fans were upset at the significant change, while some progressive Disney Park guests felt Imagineers didn’t go far enough. Last year, one woman went viral for claiming that she felt offended and objectified by the male Pirates of the Caribbean animatronics.

“I just think this is kind of a weird ride,” she explained. “I don’t know… It’s just a little bit rapey.”

The Disney Park guest said she “loved” the ride but was uncomfortable with its implications for female guests.

Some Disney Parks fans agreed and called for the end of Pirates of the Caribbean. Others demanded the ride be left alone.

This week, another Disney Parks fan demanded that Disneyland Resort change Pirates of the Caribbean. This time, the guest claimed that the attraction is ruined in its current condition.

“The fact that boats are nose to tail disrupts the experience,” Redditor u/False_Celebration923 argued. “Bumping the boats in front during the jail/dog/key scene is a mood killer. They need to release boats less often, it’s a persistent issue.”

The Disney Parks fan added that Disney cast members must do more about unruly guests on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride.

“[I] can’t help but mention the numerous people that talk during the ride, it’s too high,” they said.

Other Disney Parks fans argued that slowing down the popular boat ride would do nothing but increase wait times.

“They don’t need to slow the ride down and make the line take even longer,” said u/tomandshell .

“This is how it’s been since 1968,” u/pquade added. “While some things have changed over the years, very little has changed to the actual flume or dispatch rates. There has always been a slow section with boats backed up starting at the jail and all the way to the lift. Boats have always been backed up there. At least at Disneyland.”

The historic attraction also wasn’t built to accommodate guests transferring in and out of mobility devices.

“Unfortunately older rides don’t have the special loading zones for guests that need to transfer so that just slows everything down,” u/trer24 explained. “And the way they’re built, there is probably no way to build them in. They didn’t foresee the number of people who use mobility scooters nowadays.”

“Same reason [Haunted Mansion] and [Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters] stop so much,” u/UnlikelyLeague8589 agreed. “Just a sign of the times as more people visit with a mobility device.”

Tragic Boat Fire Claims 40 Migrant Lives Off Haiti’s Coast

Port-au-Prince, 19 July – At least 40 migrants have died, and several others were injured after a boat they were travelling in caught fire off the coast of Cap Haitien, in the north of Haiti. On 17 July, according to the National Office for Migration (ONM), the boat, carrying over 80 people, departed from Fort Saint-Michel en route to the Turks and Caicos Islands, a 250-kilometer journey. 

Forty-one surviving migrants who were aboard were rescued by the Haitian Coast Guard and are currently receiving medical care, food, water, and psychosocial support provided by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in support of the ONM. Eleven migrants were taken to the nearest hospital for treatment, including burns. 

“This devastating event highlights the risks faced by children, women, and men migrating through irregular routes, demonstrating the crucial need for safe and legal pathways for migration.” said Grégoire Goodstein, IOM’s chief of mission in the country. “Haiti’s socio-economic situation is in agony. The extreme violence over the past months has only brought Haitians to resort to desperate measures even more.” 

The lack of economic opportunities, a collapsing health system, school closures, and the absence of prospects are pushing many to consider migration as the only way to survive. A 2023 IOM research found that 84 per cent of migrants returned had left to seek job opportunities abroad. For the vast majority of Haitians, regular migration is an extremely challenging journey to consider, let alone pursue, leaving many seeing irregular migration as their only option, a particularly life-threatening one in most instances. 

Since 29 February, Haitian Coast Guard in the north has observed an increase in the number of attempts and departures by boat. Coast Guards from countries in the region, including the United States, the Bahamas, the Turks and Caicos Islands, and Jamaica, have also reported a growing number of boats originating from Haiti being intercepted at sea. 

More than 86,000 migrants have been forcibly returned to Haiti by neighboring countries this year. In March, despite a surge in violence and the closure of airports throughout the country, forced returns increased by 46 per cent, reaching 13,000 forced returns in March alone. 

IOM is concerned about the high number of forced returns of Haitians during this current period of civil unrest and uncertainty. Forced returns must occur in a dignified manner. Many migrants forcibly returned, including unaccompanied and separated children as well as pregnant and nursing women, arrive in Haiti in highly vulnerable conditions, often with few resources. They urgently need humanitarian assistance after facing numerous health and protection concerns during their journeys.  

To meet these needs, working alongside the Haitian National Office for Migration, IOM provides tailor-made assistance upon arrival, including food and water during the registration process, unconditional and multi-purpose cash assistance, hygiene kits with dignity items for women and girls, and specific kits for babies. Additionally, first aid and medical referrals are available, along with psychosocial support and counseling from trained IOM psychologists. Family reunification for unaccompanied and separated children is also supported in coordination with local authorities.
