Russian billionaire's superyacht makes waves in London
Andrey Melnichenko’s eyecatching £225m Philippe Starck-designed boat moored next to D-Day warship HMS Belfast on Thames
One of the world’s most famous superyachts has arrived in London , mooring up alongside a historic British warship on the Thames in the centre of the capital.
There was no mistaking Motor Yacht A, owned by Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko, as it sailed into the heart of the capital at the weekend, mooring next to the D-Day warship HMS Belfast by Tower Bridge.
Over the years, the £225m yacht, which is 119 metres (390ft) long and boasts three pools and seven luxurious cabins, has been spotted in the playgrounds of the rich and famous and was reportedly put up for sale earlier this year by the wealthy industrialist.
Melnichenko, 44, listed by Forbes magazine as one of Europe’s youngest billionaires with a fortune estimated at $11.4bn (£8.6bn) is said to have made his money through investments in coal, fertilisers and banking.

Melnichenko, whose 39-year-old wife Aleksandra is a former model and pop singer from Serbia, has reportedly commissioned the even grander Sailing Yacht A from the same designer, Philippe Starck.
Motor Yacht A boasts an unusual upside-down hull among its range of features, which also include three swimming pools that create currents to swim against, with a glass roof looking up into one of the pools, according to superyachts.com .
The vessel has a helipad and master suite encased in bomb-proof 44mm glass, and can accommodate 14 guests and up to 37 crew.
The yacht was named A in order to make the vessel appear first on shipping registries.
When completed in 2008, Motor Yacht A was the sixth-largest privately owned motor yacht in the world, though now is lower down in the top 25.

Residential & transferable moorings in London
Dreaming of a lifestyle change that doesn’t involve leaving the big city behind? Whether you’re seeking a slower pace, beautiful views or an easy commute, swapping the bricks and mortar for a gleaming houseboat on the London waterways could be the answer!
Buy a boat with a transferable residential licence at one of Aquavista’s beautiful Central London residential moorings. Wake up to the sound of ducks, chat to like-minded neighbours, and cycle to work along a quiet towpath.
Facilities like Wi-Fi, showers, electricity and water means you won’t be going completely off-grid. And with two great locations in the heart of the city, you’ll be able to dip in and out of the hustle and bustle of the capital whenever you wish!
In this guide, you will learn about the benefits of buying a boat with residential moorings in London, and how Aquavista’s marinas at Limehouse and Poplar can help turn your dream city lifestyle into a reality.
Securing a London residential mooring can be one of the biggest challenges for boaters hoping to start a live-aboard lifestyle in the capital. Gated and secure, marinas are always a popular choice for boaters in the city. However, most residential berths are already full to capacity and some marinas have waiting lists of up to 10 years’ long.
However, there is a way to jump the queue. Buying a boat with a transferable residential licence can get you the vessel of your dreams in a prime location, right in the heart of the city.
But, for those who want to live in a marina in central London, it’s more than just a desirable option. Buying a boat with a transferable licence is now the only practicable way to secure a residential mooring.
How does a transferable licence work?
When you buy a boat at a London marina, you’ll be told if it comes with a transferable licence as part of the deal.
If it does, you’ll get the boat plus the mooring. This will also be transferred into your name. However, it is important that you check the small print because transference of the mooring right is not automatic. You must obtain the written agreement of the site operator.
Luckily, when you buy a boat from one of Aquavista’s London marinas, our brokerage service makes this easy. Boats for sale in our London marinas at Limehouse and Poplar are sold with a transferable licence to moor, subject to a successful application. In these marinas, additional charges will apply to transfer the berth into your name, whether you choose to buy your boat through Aquavista or a third-party broker.
Are there any downsides to buying a boat with a transferable mooring?
While it’s possible to buy a boat relatively cheaply, vessels that come with a London residential mooring usually sell at a premium. But, remember that this works both ways. Having a residential berth in a desirable London postcode will make your boat a more attractive proposition if and when you come to sell!
Why choose one of Aquavista’s London marinas for your residential mooring?
Choosing an Aquavista marina means a full array of brilliant basics comes as standard. You’ll find amenities such as:
- Secure moorings
- Well-kept environments
- Shower, toilet and laundry facilities
- Working pumps and lighting
- Excellent customer service
In short, we offer everything you’d expect from modern waterside living.
What are the benefits of a residential mooring at a London marina?
If you plan to live on-board your boat full-time without securing residential moorings, your only other option is to continuously cruise the waterways. As part of the terms of your continuous cruiser licence, you’re committed to moving your boat every two weeks.
It sounds romantic, but for those tied to an area for work or school, this nomadic lifestyle may not be feasible. With a large number of boats competing for mooring space it can be stressful, especially in winter. Even if you do find a space to moor your boat, there’s no guarantee you’ll have easy access to water and electricity and a lack of postal address means you won’t be able to sign on with a GP.
The main benefit of a London mooring is that you have reliable access to electricity, water and Wi-Fi. Additionally, you can live on your boat without losing the convenience of being on land. Many of our Aquavista facilities include showers and laundry, plus you’ll get a postal address which means you can go on the electoral roll, and sign on with a GP.
Sense of connection
Take up a residential mooring at a London Aquavista marina and you’ll become part of a close-knit community of like-minded boat owners. Our London marinas attract residents from a wide variety of careers, from artists and actors to doctors and engineers.
Everyone in the community is invested in their environment and can share in the joys and adventures of living on the water. This gives you an instant sense of connection that is rare to find in a big city like London.
Close to nature in the capital
Both Poplar and Limehouse Waterside & Marinas are little pieces of natural wonder in the heart of the city and living on your boat gives you a direct connection to a whole host of wildlife.
Nothing beats feeding the ducks your leftover toast crumbs in the morning and catching a glimpse of herons, carp and waterfowl. London’s canals are true wildlife corridors and high in ecological value, offering the kind of tranquillity that city-dwellers crave.
Incredible locations
A residential mooring at one of Aquavista’s London marinas gives you the best of both worlds; a tranquil waterside location within a well connected area.
Limehouse is ideally located between the City of London and Canary Wharf, just a short walk from Limehouse Station. Poplar sits just east of Canary Wharf, with central London just minutes away on the Jubilee Line.
Healthier lifestyle
London’s boutique gyms can be pricey but who needs a membership when you live at an Aquavista marina in the capital? Getting outdoors in the fresh air and sunshine comes as standard when you live on a boat.
At Limehouse, there’s an 11-mile traffic-free towpath that takes you to Regent’s Park, perfect if you love to cycle. Poplar offers Canary Wharf, Greenwich and green spaces like Mudchute Park and Farm.
Facilities right on your doorstep
Our Waterside & Marinas at Limehouse and Poplar may feel like an oasis of calm but the buzz of London is just minutes away. Foodies are spoilt for choice at Limehouse, where the world’s cuisine awaits them on Narrow Street, just beyond the marina gates. Explore local pubs with riverside views within a five-minute walk.
At Poplar you’ll find Billingsgate Market and an array of pretty shops and restaurants in Greenwich. This is all just a half an hour stroll through the Isle of Dogs and across the river.
In need of some retail therapy? It takes less than 20 minutes to walk to Canary Wharf from both Limehouse and Poplar Waterside & Marinas , where you can shop (and eat!) until you drop.
Want to find out more about buying a boat with residential moorings in London?
At Aquavista, we’re here to lend a hand with every step of your boating journey and the first step is finding the boat that’s right for you. Visit our buy a boat page to view everything on offer at Limehouse or Poplar . You can also filter by boat type if you’ve got something particular in mind.

A Russian businessman's $50 million superyacht was seized by the UK after mooring in London for an awards ceremony, government says
- The UK government said it seized a Russian-owned, $50 million superyacht on Tuesday.
- The yacht Phi is registered to a Caribbean firm and carried a Maltese flag "to hide its origins," UK crime agency said.
- The government opened an investigation after it was identified as potentially being Russian on March 13.
A Russian-owned, $50 million superyacht was seized by the United Kingdom on Tuesday, the government said.
It's the first superyacht to be detained in UK waters, according to the National Crime Agency, which worked with the government to detain the ship.
The 192-foot vessel, called Phi, was detained by authorities in Canary Wharf, a business district in east London, according to a government statement sent to Insider. Phi was in London for a superyacht awards ceremony and was planning to set sail at midday on Tuesday, the government said.
The UK government didn't reveal the name of the owner – apart from mentioning the person was a Russian businessman and saying that the yacht, valued at £38 million ($49.9 million), was impounded as part of sanctions against Russia.
The NCA said in a statement on Tuesday that Phi's owner was "deliberately well hidden" and the person hadn't been sanctioned by the UK.
Related stories
According to documents seen by The Financial Times on Tuesday, the yacht is owned by Vitaly Vasilievich Kochetkov, the founder of mobile network Motiv Telecom.
Motiv Telecom didn't immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
Kochetkov also owns two other superyachts, Aurelia and Phi Phantom, per the documents seen by the FT. These yachts are both docked in the port of Imperia in Italy, a person familiar with the matter confirmed to Insider.
The NCA said Phi was registered to a company based in Saint Kitts and Nevis in the Caribbean, and it carried a Maltese flag "to hide its origins."
—Rt Hon Grant Shapps MP (@grantshapps) March 29, 2022
Phi was initially identified as potentially being Russian on March 13, the government said, adding that a subsequent investigation resulted in the yacht being seized.
The superyacht, built by Dutch boat builder Royal Huisman, can accommodate a total of 23 guests and crew, according to SuperYacht Times . It has a fresh-water swimming pool and a wine cellar, the UK government said.
"Today we've detained a £38m superyacht and turned an icon of Russia's power and wealth into a clear and stark warning to Putin and his cronies," UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said in the statement.
"Detaining the Phi , proves, yet again, that we can and will take the strongest possible action against those seeking to benefit from Russian connections," Shapps added.

What's the Cheapest Mooring in London? (3 Surprising Places)
You might be surprised to know that there are a few hidden gems around London that offer some of the cheapest mooring rates in the city. In this article, we'll introduce you to three of these places where you can moor your boat, either permanently or just for the weekend, without spending too much.
Limehouse Waterside Marina offers mooring for as little as £15–£20 per day, while Little Venice in West London is a popular spot for Dutch barge owners and offers mooring for as little as £12 per day. Another option is the Brentford Dock Marina, where visitor mooring rates only range from £15 to £20 per night.
Besides the mooring fee, there are other expenses associated with mooring a boat in London, such as electricity and water usage, pump-out services, insurance, and even council tax. Let's discuss each one below and how they add up to the overall mooring costs.
15 of the Most Fun Sailing Towns in the UK (and why)
- While there are places that offer cheap mooring rates in London, living aboard your boat can still add to the overall costs. It's best to do your research and consider factors such as your boating style and preferred pace.
- The cheapest mooring rate is offered by Little Venice in Central London, plus it comes with a picturesque view of the city.
- The good thing about mooring spots in London is that they all offer basic amenities such as electricity, water, and waste disposal. They also have tight security measures, and most of them are located near transport lines and main roads.
On this page:
Three places with the cheapest mooring fees in london, breakdown of mooring costs in london, facilities and services at mooring spots in london, is mooring in london for you.
Here is a table of the three of the cheapest mooring spots in London and their mooring costs:
The Limehouse Waterside Marina offers various mooring options
If you're looking for a permanent waterside living spot, the Limehouse Waterside Marina has residential mooring rates starting at just £9,000 per year , which includes water, electricity, and Wi-Fi.
For leisure moorings, the rates start at £2,500 per year, and for winter moorings, the rates start at £2,000 for a 6-month stay. For visitor moorings, the rates range from £15 to £20 per night, depending on the size of your boat.
Limehouse Waterside Marina is a popular mooring location in London for several reasons. Firstly, it is located in a prime location, just a short distance from Canary Wharf and the City of London. This makes it an ideal location for those who work in these areas, as well as for those who want to enjoy the many attractions that London has to offer.
Secondly, Limehouse Waterside Marina is a modern and well-maintained marina, with excellent facilities and services. It has 24-hour security, CCTV, and on-site staff to ensure the safety and security of boats and their owners. The marina also has electricity, water, and pump-out facilities, as well as a fuel station and a chandlery.
Thirdly, Limehouse Waterside Marina is situated on the Limehouse Cut , a historic waterway that connects the River Thames to the River Lea. This provides boaters with easy access to the River Thames and the many waterways of London and beyond.
Lastly, this marina is surrounded by a vibrant and diverse community, with a range of shops, restaurants, and pubs nearby. This makes it a great place to socialize and meet other boaters, as well as to explore the local area.
The Brentford Dock Marina offers some of the cheapest mooring spots in London
Brentford is a suburb located in West London that offers some of the cheapest mooring spots on the River Thames. The Brentford Dock Marina is one such spot that offers affordable mooring options. The marina offers mooring for as little as £10 per day, and they also offer long-term mooring options for those who need it.
Their residential mooring rates start at £5,000 per year, which includes water and electricity. They also offer a 20% discount for continuous cruisers who stay for more than 6 months. For leisure moorings, the rates start at £2,500 per year, and for visitor moorings, the standard overnight mooring charge is £20 per night.
Brentford Dock Marina is a popular mooring location in West London for several reasons. Firstly, it is situated in a tranquil and picturesque location, surrounded by green spaces and nature reserves. This makes it an ideal mooring location for those who enjoy a peaceful and relaxing environment.
It is also situated on the Grand Union Canal , one of the longest canals in the UK, providing boaters with easy access to a wide range of waterways. This makes it a great location for those who want to explore the many canals and rivers of the UK.
However, before sailing through the different channels, you might want to make sure that your boat will fit the canals. For this reason, you may read this article to find out the average canal lock size in the UK.
This marina is also closely located to a number of transport links, including the M4 motorway and several train stations, making it easy to access from other parts of London and beyond.
The Little Venice offers cheap mooring rates with breath-taking views
Little Venice is a picturesque waterway in central London, and it's one of the best places to moor your boat. It's a great location for boaters who want to explore the city and enjoy its nature. The rates for mooring in Little Venice are some of the cheapest in London, making it an ideal destination for budget-conscious boaters.
The cost of mooring in Little Venice is around £10 - £12 per night per boat, which includes access to electricity, showers, and water. If you're a continuous cruiser, you can moor for up to 14 days in a 28-day period. After that, you'll need to move your boat to a different location.
In addition to mooring fees, you'll need to pay for storage if you want to leave your boat unattended for more than 48 hours. The cost of storage is £8 per day. You'll also need to pay a £20 deposit for a key to the lock that secures the mooring.
There are many reasons why you should choose Little Venice as your mooring location. First of all, it's a beautiful and peaceful area that's close to the city center. You'll be surrounded by nature, and you can enjoy a relaxing stroll along the canal. It's also a great location for boaters who want to explore London's many attractions.
Another advantage of mooring in Little Venice is the cost. As mentioned earlier, the rates are some of the cheapest in London. You'll get access to electricity, showers, and water, which can save you money on other expenses.
When it comes to mooring your boat in London, there are a few costs to consider. These include:
- Mooring fees: The cost of renting or purchasing a mooring spot.
- Electricity: The cost of using electricity to power your boat.
- Water: The cost of using water for your boat.
- Pump-out: The cost of emptying your boat's waste tank.
- Council tax: The cost of paying council tax on your boat if it is your primary residence.
- Insurance: The cost of financial protection that helps cover the costs associated in case of damage to your boat, theft, or liability for any accidents that may occur.
The cost of each one is estimated as follows:
The total estimated cost for mooring a boat in London can reach up to £3,520 - £19,025 per year, depending on boat size, location, and usage.
To know more about the costs of different mooring types in the UK, you can read this article .
When choosing a mooring spot in London, one of the many things you may want to consider is the facilities and services that are available to you. Here are some of the things you can expect at mooring spots in London:
All mooring spots in London have basic amenities
All mooring spots in London offer basic amenities such as electricity, water supply, and waste disposal facilities. Some spots may also provide gas and fuel services for your boat.
Security measures are very tight in mooring spots in London
Security is a top priority at mooring spots in London. Most mooring spots have CCTV cameras and security personnel to ensure the safety of your boat. Some mooring spots also have gated entrances and require keycard access for added security.
Mooring spots in London are placed near public transport and main roads
Mooring spots in London are conveniently located near public transport options such as the underground and bus stops. Some mooring spots also offer bike racks and cycle paths, making it easy for you to get around the city.
Lymington, a town in England, can easily be accessed via direct rail links to London Waterloo, making it an ideal location to take a break from the city.
Now that you know about the three surprising places with the cheapest mooring in London, you may be wondering if mooring in London is for you.
First, you may need to consider your boating style. If you are a continuous cruiser, you may find it challenging to find a permanent mooring spot in London. However, if you can establish a home mooring, you can enjoy all the benefits of living on the water while still being close to the city's amenities.
Second, you may want to think about your pace. If you are looking for a quiet and peaceful spot, you may want to consider mooring outside of central London. However, if you enjoy the hustle and bustle of city life, you may prefer a mooring spot in the heart of London.
You might also need to consider the cost. While the three places we've mentioned offer affordable mooring options, the cost of living on the water can vary depending on your location, boat size, and lifestyle.
Living on the water can be a unique and rewarding experience, but it's not for everyone. If you're considering mooring in London, take some time to research your options and consider your boating style, pace, and budget. With the right information, you can make an informed decision and enjoy all that London's waterways have to offer.

British Waterways is inviting interested brokers, owners, and ship’s agents to submit expressions of interest for superyacht berthing locations in the docks and waterspace it manages in and around the Canary Wharf and London Docklands during the Olympic summer period.
British Waterways anticipates that during summer 2012 there will be significant demand for the use of its unique, large berths in the prestigious London Docks, situated in the heart of the Canary Wharf financial district and within two miles of the Olympic Park.
Gareth Stephens, British Waterways’ Harbour and Waterspace Manager explains:
“British Waterways manages 110 acres of waterspace in the heart of Canary Wharf. We play host to visiting vessels from around the world every year, including super yachts, cruise ships and official naval visits.
“The waterspace here at London Docklands offers a unique and unparalleled facility in the heart of the city, just two miles from the Olympic Park.
“The Docks are a transport hub, enabling easy access to central London, and the Olympic Park, with river services, tube, DLR and road connections, plus the bars, restaurants and shops of Canary Wharf are also on-hand for visitors.
“We’ve already had significant interest about mooring opportunities during the Olympic summer. Now we are inviting owners, brokers and ship’s agents to formally register their interest for berthing during summer 2012.”
London Docklands offer a variety of services to visiting vessels and superyachts:
• Deep water berths • West India Lock can accommodate vessels up to 165m in length and 23.5m in width • Full servicing facilities (water, sewage, bunkering and refuse) • Unlimited air draft • A range of berths close to Canary Wharf, London’s financial district • Ease of access to the Olympic Park, situated just two miles from London Docklands, and easy access to other Olympic venues, particularly Greenwich Park, one mile away and the 02 arena • Tube, DLR and River Boat service connections
To formally register interest in berthing at London Docklands, and to find out further details, please contact Gareth Stephens, British Waterways’ Harbour and Waterspace Manager.
British Waterways cares for Britain’s 200-year old network of historic canals, rivers and docks, which attract over 13 million people each year for walking, cycling, angling, boating or simply the peace and quiet. The Government has backed British Waterways’ plans in England and Wales for the canals and rivers to leave state control to become a ‘national trust’ for the waterways. This exciting new charity, which is targeted to be up and running by April 2012, will attract greater investment and give local people a greater role in how their waterways are run.
