Riverboats Music Festival

Amidst the historic paddle steamers and the serene meandering of the mighty Murray River, Echuca, a charming port town in Victoria, played host to the Riverboats Music Festival 2024. As the waters whispered ancient tales, the festival breathed life into the town with harmonious melodies, turning Echuca into a musical haven for three unforgettable days.

Historic Setting, Contemporary Rhythms

The Riverboats Music Festival seamlessly merged Echuca's rich riverboat history with the modern pulse of music. The iconic paddle steamers, once the lifeblood of the town, provided not just a picturesque backdrop but also became interactive venues for intimate performances, making every song a journey through time.

Eclectic Musical Tapestry

The 2024 edition of the festival curated a diverse lineup of artists. From indie rock and soulful blues to authentic Aboriginal performances, the Riverboats Music Festival ensured that every attendee found their rhythm. The stages echoed with both the powerful voices of Australian music legends and the fresh tones of emerging talents.

Dancing Under the Gum Trees

Amidst ancient red gums, festival-goers swayed, tapped, and danced. Whether it was the lively beats of folk music or the soothing notes of a ballad, the open-air setting under the vast Australian sky made every performance feel personal and immersive.

Gourmet Delights by the River

Complementing the auditory experiences, the festival tantalized taste buds with a spread of gourmet offerings. Local chefs and food trucks served an array of dishes, celebrating Australia's rich culinary heritage. Fresh catches from the Murray, paired with wines from nearby regions, ensured a feast for all senses.

Beyond the Music: Cruises and Stories

Unique to the Riverboats Music Festival were the river cruises, where attendees could board historical paddle steamers, listening to tales of the river's past while enjoying acoustic performances. These cruises were a reminder of Echuca's significance in Australia's riverboat history.

Sustainability and Community Engagement

In an effort to harmonize with the environment, the festival championed green initiatives. From eco-friendly transportation options, like bicycle parking zones, to waste reduction measures, the festival highlighted its commitment to the land. Moreover, collaborations with local businesses and community groups ensured a holistic integration of Echuca's residents.

Echuca's Melodic Voyage on the Murray

The Riverboats Music Festival 2024 was not merely a celebration of music; it was a symphony of history, nature, and community. As the final notes faded and the paddle steamers retreated to their nocturnal silhouettes, attendees carried with them melodies intertwined with memories of the Murray's gentle flow. Echuca, with its historic charm and musical heartbeat, etched itself into the hearts of all, promising more tales and tunes in the years to come.

Missy Higgins, Peter Garrett and many more headline Riverboats Music Festival line-up

Riverboats will rock again, with some massive acts confirmed for the music festival’s return to the Aquatic Reserve in February.

Hold tight - we’re checking permissions before loading more content

Released on Monday, the lineup includes seven-time ARIA award winner Missy Higgins – back for the first time since 2016 - Australian rock legend Peter Garrett with the Alter Egos, country music superstar Kasey Chambers and popular rock band Regurgitator.

The February festival will be the 12th edition of Riverboats, and festival director David Frazer said it might be the biggest yet.

“I would say it’s our biggest lineup ever,” Mr Frazer said.

“To have the likes of Missy Higgins, Peter Garrett, Kasey Chambers, and Russell Morris on the one bill is a huge coup, and I hope that we can fill the town and put on a good show.

“To present artists of the calibre of Peter Garrett, who recently came off a farewell tour with Midnight Oil.

“This will be his first outing since that tour wrapped up. He’s going to play a bunch of Midnight Oil songs throughout his set as well.

“Regurgitator are a band a lot of our audience have grown up with. They packed out three nights at the Forum.”

The PS Pevensey will again put the boat in Riverboats with four acts set to take place on the iconic paddlesteamer, featuring performances by First Nation’s artist Kee’ahn alongside Minor Gold, JAZZPARTY and Sweet Talk.

The floating shows are one of the more unique aspects of a music festival you’ll find anywhere.

“Echuca Paddlesteamers have got behind us again, and we’re doing four shows on the Pevensey across the weekend,” Mr Frazer said.

“Those tickets are already about half sold. It’s the only festival in Australia you can do that.”

The festival is poised to return to its spiritual home in the Aquatic Reserve after last year’s event was forced into a relocation to Victoria Park due to the floods.

Riverboats has endured a mix of COVID-19 disruptions and inclement weather since 2021, and Frazer said it will be a thrill to return to the reserve with some redevelopment works at the site set to be complete in the next month.

“Last year was a wonderful event at Vic Park, but it was something that was certainly unplanned,” he said.

“We didn’t launch until mid-November last year; two days before we were due to launch, the water spilled over the amphitheatre.

“The local shire has been doing a fair bit of redevelopment down there at the moment. That’s all going to be completed by the end of next month. With that in mind, we’ve been working on a number of improvements to the overall festival experience.

“We’ll certainly have better access this year. They’re removing a large part of that creek and bridges down at Aquatic, so you’ll be able to move around easier.”

Brian Nankervis also returns as MC of the event, the 11th time he will do so.

Riverboats Music Festival will occur from February 16-18 at the Aquatic Reserve in Echuca.

Music Festivals in St. Petersburg

There’s just something “special” about a live musical performance, which explains why St. Petersburg music festivals continue to grow in popularity every season. Allowing musicians, fans, and critics alike to congregate in one setting to hear their favorite artists or genres on display allows everyone to discern where the music is headed, as well as introducing them to styles and artists they may never have heard of prior. Music festivals now regularly attract crowds that number into the hundreds of thousands, and occasionally even surpassing the one million attendees mark.
