CLIENT TESTIMONIALS

GREAT OUTFIT!

In short order the sales team of Sean Fenniman and Nicole Drost convinced me Allied Marine was the best choice over all other brokers.

Their attention to detail and prompt service outmatches their competition. They literally outworked other brokers and secured me as a loyal customer. What a relief to receive paperwork quickly and as promised. Would not hesitate to recommend this duo. ~Brian K.

PROFESSIONAL AND GREAT ATTENTION TO DETAIL!

I have purchased two boats from Sean Fenniman and Allied Marine in Stuart, FL. Both experiences were handled professionally and with great attention to detail. Making such a large purchase is stressful, however, this team understands those stresses and allows the purchaser to go through the process in their time, without any pressure or judgement. I give this group the highest recommendation. They have made my family's dream come true - twice! ~William W.

7 TRANSACTIONS (BUY AND SELL) IN THE PAST 7 YEARS ON BOATS WITH THEM!

I can't say enough about these people. I've had 7 transactions (buy and sell) in the past 7 years on boats with them. Every promise made was kept with special help like ... Sean Fenniman stayed up most of the night once working with a mechanic to address some survey issues that arose last minute to save the sale that would have fallen apart... Sean swapped a Garmin from his personal boat for my new faulty one so I could start my trip north once ... he personally cleaned a boat prior to a showing due to the vendor canceling the last minute. His Wife Tina helped me totally renovate 2 yachts, coordinating countless vendors. Tina offered to run to the registry in Florida for me when I was having an issue renewing online and followed up after to make sure I was okay. Nicole Brova Drost provided painless closings each time, chasing down issues before I even heard about them. I have too many examples to share here. They are without a doubt ... "super stars" ~William V.

ATTENTION TO DETAIL AND PROFESSIONALISM MADE THE DEAL COME TOGETHER EASILY!

I was in the market for a larger Sportfish and called Peter for additional information on his listing. Although the listed boat was under contract, Peter found one a little better equipped in the same price range. Sensing we should move quickly, Peter suggested we board right-away. We had only worked (together) a short while but Peter's understanding of the build, attention to detail and professionalism made the deal come together easily. We worked with the seller directly and carved out a deal during the showing that made sense. ~Pam E.

FUN PROJECT

From day one, Peter provided us with a great experience. Knowledge, foresight, comrade, and professionalism all made for a fun project acquiring our larger boat. At the onset of our relationship and vessel search, Peter stated, "This is a marathon not a sprint." With his help we won the race. Peter Kurki and Allied Marine made for an enjoyable experience purchasing our new vessel. We love our new boat. ~ Fred - Atlanta, Georgia

VISITED VESSELS BEFORE ENDORSING

Living in North Carolina we did not have direct access to the inventory of listings found in South Florida. Peter maintained a vigil on vessels he thought we would like in the South Florida market, visiting them for us before endorsing. Peter's knowledge and understanding of manufacturers, systems and performance made for a comfortable purchase. After a life-changing event, Peter then subsequently represented our vessel for sale and found us the buyer that was "meant to be." We had a pleasurable experience with Peter Kurki and Allied Marine, we would recommend to anyone who is in the market for a new or pre-owned vessel. ~ Lynn and Susan, Wilmington, North Carolina

DOCKED THE BOAT AT MY HOME

My career in law enforcement with Miami/Dade Marine Patrol provided me with many years of enjoyment on the water. When it was time to purchase my personal vessel I had the great pleasure of meeting Peter through social connections. We subsequently had a great time finding the vessel that suits me best. We saw a bunch of listings and worked with a strategy and plan to secure what was best. Peter returned all my calls, was always present and accounted for through the survey and closing. Peter then helped me personally to bring the boat home, docking her for the initial time. From beginning discussions of ownership to securing the lines on my home dock, Peter Kurki was an asset. Knowledgeable on boats and procedures and yachting culture, I felt comfortable with all his work. Peter is awesome, I'm confident people don't know how much heart he puts into making his clients happy! ~ Kevin D. - Stuart, Florida

Focus-driven purpose helps a buyer when she knows what she wants. I now have the boat I've dreamed of and a broker who delivers on his promise. ~ Pam - Wilmington, North Carolina

Navigating The Yacht Brokerage Market

  • By Kim Kavin
  • January 5, 2022

The pandemic caused a rush on a lot of things: toilet paper, cleaning supplies, n95 masks. And when the masses came for the boats, the brokerage market took off. “People realized that boating and yachting was one of the really great things that you could get out and do and be safe with your family and friends away from crowds and all the restrictions,” says broker Michael C. Galati with Galati Yacht Sales. “It took a few months, but by the third quarter of 2020, sales had picked up quite a bit. By the end of the year, all of the inventory that was desirable was sold. Brokerage and new boats—anything late model or new that was priced competitively—all of those boats were sold. Then the calendar turned into 2021, and we started to experience a shortage.”

That continuing shortage is the reason why, as you walk the boat-show docks this fall, they look a bit like the picked-over supermarket shelves from early 2020. Fewer brokerage boats are for sale than usual across all market segments, from center-consoles to sport-fishermen to superyachts.

HMY Yachts, one of the largest brokerage companies in the United States, usually brings 35 brokerage boats to the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in Florida. This year, less than two months before the show, the company was hoping to have 25. Worth Avenue Yachts, which specializes in yachts 80 feet and larger, booked 12 slips for the show. It had four boats to put in those slips as of September and expected two of them to sell before the gates opened.

Tim Derrico, director of sales at HMY, says the current state of the brokerage market is forcing would-be buyers to shop in ways that can feel just as shocking as what all of America experienced during the pandemic’s early supply-chain disruptions: “You better be quick on the draw. If you hesitate, somebody else will step in and buy it. If you wait a day or two, forget it.”

The New Normal

Get used to the current market conditions, experts say, because things may not equalize anytime soon.

The shortage is a result of numerous factors, starting with the type of people who led the recent boat-buying craze. Yes, there were longtime boaters in the mix, but a lot of the buyers were new to boating, including an unusual number of people so stunned by skyrocketing prices for homes on land that they turned their attention from the waterfront to waterborne.

“We normally would’ve seen people buy condos or houses, but all they can get right now is a shanty on the water,” says Jimmy Rogers, a broker with OneWater Yacht Group. “In the boat market, if they can find it, they can get a nice 60-foot boat. I think the craziness in the real estate market is driving the craziness in the boat market.”

At the same time, longtime boaters who normally would have put their rides on the market to trade up decided instead to hold pat.

“You have people who went to their boats because it’s safe,” says Westport Yachts sales broker Alex Rogers. “They could control what happened there to the point that they had their crew sit on the boat and not leave, and had things brought to the boat. In the Bahamas, they’d have seaplanes fly in with food—just crazy stuff. And that has continued.”

And longtime boaters couldn’t trade their boats for newer models because of jams in the new-boat supply chain as well. Brokers and dealers say sales closing now on new boats are for 2023 or 2024 deliveries. Some superyachts are being ordered for delivery in 2026.

The backup is so intense, Galati says, that brokerage buyers are now looking to sign deals for existing boats, with a handover whenever the owners become ready to sell them.

“We call them ‘future availables,’” he says. “Say the owner has signed a contract to buy a new boat and trade it in. Well, he’s not going to give up that boat until his new boat is ready, but we can sign the contract now for the sale later.”

Dizzying Speed

The result of all these pressures is that when boats do come up for sale, they’re finding buyers incredibly quickly, often even faster than the brokers can make the listings available. Brokers advising clients to move ultra-fast these days really mean it.

“Right now, our best advice seems like a sales pitch, but it isn’t,” says Chuck Cashman, chief revenue officer at MarineMax. “When we say that boat is going to sell overnight, it’s actually happening.”

Prices are only slightly up—buyers haven’t lost their fiscal minds—but the new currency of value is the knowledge that a boat is about to go on the market, so you can make an offer before anyone else even knows it’s available.

“I just listed a 1990 36-foot Sabreline Fast Trawler in the Florida Keys, and in two days, I had three offers,” says Curtis Stokes, president of Curtis Stokes & Associates. “We put it under contract for full asking price, and the seller cut off the bidding. Normally, that would have taken six months.”

Do you think that sounds fast?

“We just sold a Garlington sport-fish the other day. I think we sold it in 20 minutes,” says Jon Burkard, president of Allied Marine. “That’s an exaggeration, but definitely within a couple days. The rise in demand has actually been breathtaking.”

In years past, it would take six to eight months to sell a motoryacht big enough to require a crew, says Brian Tansey, co-founder of Worth Avenue Yachts. “We had a brand-new boat that was a 100-footer,” he says, “and in 60 days, it was gone.”

How To Get In

Trying to buy a boat in this type of market can be challenging. And part of the problem is not the actual marketplace but the way so many of us now think about how to shop.

Back in the olden days—before social media and online boat listings—the way you found a great brokerage boat was by working with a knowledgeable broker. You’d look through classified ads in a magazine like this one, call a broker and ask about a listing that tickled your toes, and pick his brain about what other boats he knew about that might suit your needs. That broker, in turn, was using every one of his personal relationships to learn not only about boats for sale now but also about boats that might be coming up for sale soon. Having a broker who was “in the know” was an indispensable asset.

Then came the World Wide Web. Nowadays, buyers are using the internet to learn about boats coming onto the market for sale and then clicking to buy them.

“The broker’s participation in a boat deal went down to nil,” Alex Rogers says. “All they did was the paperwork, to the point that Yachtworld now has a make-an-offer button where you don’t even need a broker.”

That type of shopping strategy—which permeates modern society for all kinds of products—is the last thing a buyer should be embracing in the brokerage market right now. Instead, experts say, what’s often required in order to learn about—and make a successful offer on—a brokerage boat these days is having a relationship with a connected broker who can get you into the mix on a deal before the boat even hits other people’s computer screens.

“There’s no question about it. If you want a brokerage boat, you need to associate yourself with a salesperson from a large firm that handles multiple brands and has lots of inventory,” Derrico says. “Unless you’re dealing with somebody that’s in the know, that sells a lot of those boats, you’re never going to hear about it. A small-time broker that works out of his car? Forget about it.”

Not every yacht broker has those kinds of deep relationships, Alex Rogers adds, meaning that buyers would be wise to interview potential brokers about not just their current sales listings but also their connections. A broker should be able to explain, in this market, how he intends to help you find a boat that will suit your needs.

“The new brokers who just came into the business can’t do that,” he says. “All they have is the internet.”

Cashman also suggests that clients ask brokers to explain their sales from the past six months. “We’re at a historic level of business. Show me your results,” he says. “Make sure you’re dealing with somebody that has a track record of getting things finished.”

Juan Bernabeu illustration

Be Ready To Pounce

Another thing buyers can do to increase their chances of success is having all their paperwork in order. If you’re going to need a loan to pay for the boat, then get preapproval from the bank. Most brokers won’t even bother making an offer right now that’s contingent on securing financing.

Insurance also needs to be considered well before you know which boat you want to buy.

“Insurance has changed our business in the past two years almost as much as COVID,” says broker Jeff Stanley at Gilman Yachts. “There’s so much business that the insurance underwriters have tightened who they want to insure. They’ve raised the bar.”

A buyer who has never owned a boat, or only owned smaller boats, and who doesn’t want to pay $75,000 a year for a captain on a 60-footer he’s looking to buy? Slim to no chance of getting insured. An experienced boater who thinks the insurance company will follow the normal pattern of waiting for a survey to determine a boat’s value? Think again.

“I just did a deal on a 2006 65 Marquis,” Stanley says, “and the insurance underwriter was telling the buyer what the boat was worth before there had even been a survey or an offer.”

Jorge Pecci, the CEO of SafeWaters Underwriting Managers, says insurers absolutely look at more than the boat itself. To determine risk, they consider the boat, who will be driving it and where it will cruise.

“This includes years of experience in general and on similar boats in the intended navigation waters, as well as what kind of training the operator had,” Pecci says. “US Coast Guard licenses are preferred.”

As with finding a top-notch sales broker, finding a top-notch insurance broker can also help.

“Avoid using generalists,” Pecci says. “When dealing with a brokered boat, you want a specialist, someone that understands boats. He or she will ask the appropriate questions to obtain a competitive outcome when looking for insurance on your behalf.”

Be Flexible

Many buyers—given that the market has been in this state for the better part of a year—have learned that insisting on a specific model, features and build year is probably not the best approach. Flexible thinking, brokers say, is a better tactic.

“People are calling us that don’t necessarily want what everybody else wants, and maybe they’re willing to be less particular than they would’ve been, so we can find something that suits their needs,” Burkard says. “Enough of the clients know that stuff just isn’t out there, so they’re thinking of other ways to go boating. They change their plan. Maybe they wanted a sport-fisherman and they move to a big center-console for a while. Or maybe they adjust and get a motoryacht.”

Others are shopping in creative ways. Galati and Tansey say they’re selling boats after virtual tours on FaceTime or Zoom. To beat the crowds of buyers, the broker goes to the boat, loops in his client on a video call, and has a surveyor on standby. “We’ve had clients buy boats without actually touching the boat,” Tansey says. “We did that with a 56-meter [184-footer]. They did not see the boat until it landed in the United States.”

Stokes is encouraging clients to go to boat shows, but also to leave time to visit boats beyond the show docks.

“My advice to people going to boat shows is: Go. Enjoy the atmosphere, and look at all the parts and supplies, but hire a buyer broker to represent you well in advance, to scout out what boats are for sale in the general area of the boat show. You can look at boats that are for sale by owner or listed but not in the show, and then go the show for a day.”

Cashman also is urging clients not to wait until the shows to make an offer.

“I believe the premium, properly priced boats are going to be under pressure before the show,” he says. “That doesn’t mean there won’t be a good deal at the show…but if I was in the market to buy a boat, I would try to do it before the show. Get it off the market.”

Most of all, yacht brokers say, be patient. Nobody knows what will happen next. People who were new to boating in 2020 may sell in 2022, having had a taste of operating costs or deciding they want a different ride. People who fear an economic downturn may sell boats to get cash on hand.  All of that could bring more boats into the market.

The one thing everyone agrees on is that, eventually, the market will change.

“This is not going to keep going forever,” Derrico says. “I’ve never seen an upcycle last this long. At some point in time, it’s going to stabilize.”

Juan Bernabeu illustration

Broker Jimmy Rogers at OneWater Yacht Group says sellers are reluctant even to list boats until they find something new. “It’s just more buyers than there are sellers and not a lot of inventory out there. It’s a more challenging environment, and it may be getting more challenging.”

A Long Line

Sales broker Michael C. Galati of Galati Yacht Sales says his firm developed a yacht-shopping tool on its website to help would-be buyers receive the most up-to-date, publicly available information the moment it comes online. So far, according to the company, more than 3,000 would-be boat buyers have signed up. “It’s like Zillow,” he says. “You put in your parameters, and when that hits the market or there’s a price drop, you get notified with an email. Anyone can sign up.”

Brand Demand

Tim Derrico at HMY Yachts says there is such pent-up demand right now for certain boat brands that listings sometimes don’t even make it online. “Being the biggest Viking dealer and the biggest Princess dealer,” he says, “if we come up with a late-model Princess or Viking, we can usually sell it with a couple of phone calls.”

This Is Different

Broker Curtis Stokes says previous buying sprees don’t compare to what’s happening now: “In 2007, just before the recession, it was a phenomenal year for sales but…there was more inventory; people could get into a boatyard and fix it. Now, I sense a lot of frustration among new buyers. They want to get on a boat and go, or update it, and they’re struggling to find the inventory. When they do find it, getting upgrades done and getting supplies or repairs is also hard. For someone brand-new to boating, it’s been a little frustrating.”

It’s Everywhere

The brokerage inventory crunch extends beyond the United States, says Alex Rogers of Westport Yachts: “A lot of the brokers I’ve spoken to over the summer have customers in tow. They put together a list of boats stateside and [in] the Med, they book the ticket to fly to the Med, and before they get on the plane, half the boats have sold. It’s in a matter of days.”

Don’t Overpay

Often in a sellers’ market, brokerage boats will be listed at sky-high prices that bear no resemblance to actual value. That’s not happening now, brokers say, so don’t overpay—no matter how many times you hear that the market is red-hot. “After sellers have heard this enough times, they think their boat is worth a lot more,” says Jeff Stanley at Gilman Yachts. “I don’t think it is. I just think it sells more quickly than it would have a few years ago.”

“Also, successful brokers have repeat customers. There are a lot of guys that are one-and-done. They slam a customer into a boat and they don’t see past that closing date or that paycheck. I’ve been in the business 21 years and I’ve had customers buy seven, eight, nine boats with me in a very short window of time. So you want to look at somebody who has relationships and don’t be afraid to ask for referrals. Have a conversation, especially if you’re purchasing a larger asset. You want to understand other people’s experiences that have worked with that broker before.”

“There’s a lot of confusing information. They’re going to get a lot of opinions from a lot of different people and I’d say just do their homework. They can check on the internet, they can look up a broker online. They can check client reviews of that broker. It’s all pretty public. You can find out if that broker has ever been sued, let’s say for bad practices.”

The vetting should also go further than just the broker–the brokerage firm can speak volumes as well. A client should also keep in mind what types of boats certain companies represent. “There are small, mom-and-pop companies that specialize in certain size range of boats, but if you’re looking at a certain size vessel that those mom-and-pops are not used to handling, don’t go to a small firm that sells small boats to buy a big boat. The boat will determine the broker and the firm that are looking out for your best interest. I have the ability to work wherever I want and I’ve chosen to be with Denison for 12 years.”

Denison broker Brian Nobles at the 2024 Miami Boat Show

Denison broker  Brian Nobles has been with the company for 11 years, and has seen his fair share of deals. “The biggest thing that I’ll do is try to pre-qualify somebody and vet the client,” he says. “It’s good to ask pre-qualifying questions like: are you looking to buy this season or next season, do you currently own a boat, what kind of boat do you have? Once you talk about what their perfect day on the water is, whether it’s with friends, family, etc., you break down those barriers and build rapport, you can ask them how they plan to pay for the boat, and see if putting 20% down is an issue, to really get the ball rolling. Find out where they plan on docking the boat. You need to find out if it’s the right boat for them. That’s what makes a broker really good at boat shows, is that you have a limited amount of time. You need to stay quick on your feet and ask the right questions.” Vetting a client can help a broker not only understand if a buyer is ready to purchase a yacht, but what boats will fit their preferences and be the right fit.

Denison broker Jon Plewniak at the 2024 Miami Boat Show

Denison broker Jon Plewniak shared his opinion of what a good broker does. “One of the biggest things, which is why I share weekly newsletters, is that people that are active in the industry. Some brokers are captains or work in the marine industry They go to events, network, and find boats that are off-market that are available for sale before they actually go on market. Somebody that can stay on top of the market and knows market pricing and what’s moving and what’s not (which is what brokers are here for).”

“After that, I’m guiding you through everything,” he shares, “Sea trial and survey, the process of buying a boat, the negotiations of it. There’s going to be key processes and if a broker doesn’t know the mechanical sides of the boat and things like that, that’s important. Because anyone can look at a survey and say it looks good, but being able to know what it is is important.”

“With a good broker, a broker isn’t going to be there just for the sale of the boat, but they’re going to be there for the whole ownership of the boat. When it comes to finding dockage, finding a mechanic, finding good detailers–anything in the marine industry–that they’re well-rounded to get you information and they stay in touch the whole time. It’s a relationship and friendship for that whole time.”

Denison broker Aderbal Coelho Jr. at the 2024 Miami Boat Show

Denison broker Aderbal Coelho Jr. discusses the frequent difficulty to find the “right boat” for clients when they are looking to trade in, citing the fact that it means that “they want to get out of their original boat and buy the new boat”, which can prove challenging because “they want to sell their boat for more money” and that is often not possible. Generally, he says that clients need a lot of attention now, and it is important to provide it. “The biggest thing is just spending time with them and figuring out what is the best fit.”

Broker Jordan Preusz shared a similar sentiment to many other brokers in the company. “A good thing that I would want a broker to look out for would be like finding off-market deals. Maybe things that aren’t in the show, that aren’t online. For example, at the Fort Lauderdale show, I had clients that ended up buying an 88 Azimut. The boat online was listed as in Rhode Island, and it happened to be right next to the boat show and the broker jusr didn’t change the location. So I called him to see if it was available and he said that it was available, it was around the corner. They ended up buying it. So, basically, knowing the ins and outs. Having the insider details. You know, actually calling the listing agents. Doing the work.”

Denison broker Jake Garber at the 2024 Miami Boat Show

When asked how to vet a broker, Jake Garber says one word: honesty. “Honesty is everything for a broker. What I would look for as a buyer, if I was with a broker, is if he walks me on a boat, I look at it, I love it, but in the back of my mind, I know that’s not a quality boat. He should tell me. Don’t sell your client a boat that you wouldn’t like yourself. The brokers who sell their clients an expensive boat that’s not a quality boat, that maybe has gremlins on it, they lose that client on the next sale because the client hates it.” In Jake’s opinion, a broker who isn’t just trying to make a sale will get repeat customers.

Denison brokers Natalia and Alex G. Clarke at the 2024 Miami Boat Show

Superyacht broker Alex G. Clarke argues that there is a longer process for clients to discover what they want when searching for a yacht, even before choosing a broker. “Many clients attend yacht/boat shows to not necessarily buy something but rather to educate themselves on what the market has to offer. Prior to arrival, they will do their research, check market conditions, communicate with brokers (many times engaging with multiple brokers), and then walk the docks with the goals of getting onboard as many yachts as possible to gage the interior and exterior deck spaces and appealing features found onboard different models and brands. During this research stage, a client will often form a relationship with a broker with whom they feel comfortable. To form this relationship, the broker needs to obviously be knowledgeable, experienced, and give proper advice to a client. It is very rare for a client to show up to the show without a broker whom they are working with or have worked with in the past.”

“Most clients, after touring multiple yachts with ‘their broker’ during the show,” he continues, “depart having a better understanding of their options and then move to the next step of making a more educated decision on what the right yacht is for their family. The key for the broker is to spend valuable time with the client in person during the show so that they create a strong bond based on trust and knowledge. That face-to-face time is invaluable–go to dinner with the clients, walk the docks with them, and hopefully, the end result is a lifelong relationship with multiple sales in the coming years.”

Denison broker Jerry Gilpin at the 2024 Miami Boat Show

Denison broker Jerry Gilpin has a lot to offer in regards to best practices for brokers. “What a broker should be teaching a client about is really diving into the records,” he says. “Product knowledge is key and a lot of that just comes from experience selling a lot of boats or being involved in the industry in one aspect or another, whether you’re in service or as a captain or a concierge service or whatever…but you should be able to lead your clients to a boat that fits them properly. We’re not in it just to make a sale, we’re in it to actually educate our clients because we want them coming back. We want to make sure that they think of you the next time, when they want to sell their boat and everything like that.”

“I think it’s special, the first encounter you have with a client is the best encounter because that’s going to be the most memorable one that will, one, ultimately get you a referral, hopefully, and then the second, obviously, is them coming back. If I put myself in that situation as a consumer, like when I’m making big purchases, I always look for referrals. I look for ratings. I think most people will Google reviews and see what kind of information they can find on someone.”

Denison broker Juno Prudhomm at the 2024 Miami Boat Show

Juno Prudhomm finds it important that brokers come prepared to boat shows. “A good broker sets up a prior appointment with the listing agent at a boat show (if they have a boat in the show), with specification on which date and time beforehand. That way, that broker knows when the client comes up and the broker is there it’s not such a hassle of checking in, it’s just an easier process of them getting on and off.”

“A big part of picking a good broker really is just the gut feeling and the intuition, as well as just the relationship and the synergy that they feel from you,” Juno shares. “How educated you are in speaking about the product and not forcing them into something that they don’t really want. I think you feel a connection there of qualifying questions; you’re really building a rapport. I think that’s what a client has to feel when they’re buying a boat. That’s what happened when I sold my 85’ Azimut. The client’s son loved the boat. I was focused on his son, and I told him he could be the captain, asking the son what he likes. And the client was telling me how much his sons love boating and what he likes to do with his son. You’re building a relationship and rapport. Like if they have a dog, mentioning how much they would love the boat and how much space there is to run around. It’s just building trigger points for them on what they’re really looking to do on the water, and meeting their needs.”

Denison broker Paul Denton at the 2024 Miami Boat Show

Paul Denton agrees with other Denison brokers that industry experience is a big tell if a broker will know his stuff. “I would say longevity in the industry regarding if they’ve worked a ladder, if they’ve been in the boating industry or yachting industry, how long they’ve been in it. Furthermore, their education on mechanicals, on electronics, cost to get these items replaced or repaired.”

“I, number one, work off this industry for the relationship,” he shares. “First thing I do is sit down with a client and spend maybe 30 minutes to an hour discussing what their plan is with the boat. If they want to do long trips to the Bahamas, or they want to do Med trips, or they want to do weekend trips. With that information, I can dial in where their budget, with their budget in mind, where we should be looking. If they want to owner-operate, if they want a captain, how many crew or staff they need onboard. With all that information put together, then I can put out a good game plan or structure of what boats we should be looking at that fits their lifestyle and their expectations.”

Paul highlights how important it is for a good broker to do his due diligence when looking for the right boat for his client. “Number one thing a lot of brokers do in this industry that they get lazy on doing is previewing boats. So, I delegate a lot of my time before wasting a client’s time by going to look at an asset because, as we all know, planes and yachts are the most photogenic things. With that information, I’ll go and give them transparent feedback on what the boat needs in regards to upholstery, in regards to updated electronics, in regards to teak deck, in regards to maintenance on the engines, generators, do they want stabilization or not. If so, we’re looking for Seakeepers, we’re looking for fins, and also maintenance records on those same items.”

Denison broker Richard Glazer at the 2024 Miami Boat Show

Denison broker Richard Glazer finds that listening is key. “What I would look for in a broker is a broker who, I know it sounds cliche, but who really does a lot of good listening and observing. We tend to try to sell somebody without knowing what it is that they’re trying to buy. And we presume that the boat’s going to fit what they want. What we really have to be keen about is to be able to…when I say listen, it’s just not listening, it’s observing, it’s gauging their reaction to what they’re seeing or what they’re saying. And to be able to point them in the direction of what boat features are important to them on the boat. And not just walk on the boat and say, ‘oh look, you know, there’s a big beautiful kitchen’. ‘I don’t cook.’ If you don’t know that they don’t cook, it’s not important to them. So it’s really getting to know them too, is what they mean. It’s really gaining an understanding of what’s in their mind, in their head, and what’s practical, what’s going to fit for them. And guiding them onto that boat. What I do is when I get on a boat with people is I watch them. I try to talk less. You really have to just watch them react to the boat. You can gauge their body language, you can gauge their reaction. Somebody walks by and touches something kind of nicely and you can kind of see in their face or their reaction that this feels good. It’s something that’s practiced.”

“We can spend a lot of time selling the wrong thing and making mistakes and not gaining the confidence of the buyer,” he continues. “The main thing is, you know, listen and understand what it is they want to buy. It’s not quick. It can take getting on and off a number of boats. It really takes good observation skills.”

“At least for myself, the way I picture it is that when I want to buy something, I want to formulate in my own head what my thoughts are. And if somebody’s in my ear telling me how to think or feel, it’s just a hindrance. So I try to spend a lot of time just watching and let them, you know, if we walk on a boat, I’ll let them walk in and I’ll reinforce some of the positives. Or if I know the things that they are looking for and they miss it, I may point it out. Let them go experience the boat.”

Being a broker takes a good mix of industry experience, sales experience, people skills, knowledge, and intuition. There are many important steps in helping a client find the right yacht for them, or sell their current boat. Denison offers over 100 licensed and certified brokers with years of experience and a wide range of resources at their hands.

Vicem Yachts Vintage Line is built using the cold-molding process. A construction technique which embodies all the construction methods of the Turkish historical marine tradition; a modern procedure different from traditional boat building. Based on engineered wood construction, cold-molding uses laminated mahogany and a specific formulated epoxy resin to create the hull, decks and principal superstructures. This results in a strong vessel with a smooth ride, and natural insulation from humidity and noise.

47m Mengi Yay motor yacht Ancora for sale

The 47.3-metre Mengi Yay motor yacht Ancora has joined the market and is listed for sale with Alain Auvare and David Legrand of Fraser .

Built of steel and aluminium in Turkey and delivered in autumn 2023 by Mengi Yay, the brokers said she is "the latest addition to the prestigious Virtus 47 series".

Her exterior was conceptualised by Paolo Dose of VYD Studio and her interior design is by Robert Trown & Associates . Naval architecture is by Ginton Naval Architects.

Accommodation is for 10 to 12 guests in five cabins, the master stateroom benefiting from a fold-out balcony, dressing room and office. The four guest cabins, comprising two doubles and two convertibles, are located on the lower deck. Quarters are provided for a crew of nine in five cabins.

Floor-to-ceiling windows allow for excellent views out of Ancora's saloon and the dining room, the latter also sporting a fold-down balcony, giving a connection with the surroundings. One level up, the "expansive" sky lounge opens out to an al fresco dining table.

Down at water level, the beach club features both side and transom openings and the Castoldi Jet Tender is stowed in the enclosed garage space. A hot tub is positioned up on the sun deck for privacy and panoramic views.

The 496GT yacht for sale has a top speed of 16 knots and cruising speed of 12 knots under her twin 1,450hp Caterpilllar engines. Range is specified at 4,100 nautical miles at 10 knots. The brokers pointed out that the RINA-classed vessel comes with a two-year warranty on her hull and machinery.

Lying in West Palm Beach, USA, Ancora 's price is upon application. She is on display at the Palm Beach International Boat Show.

Woman takes father’s Auckland yacht brokerage firm to task over employment dispute

A large yacht brokerage firm has been challenged by the daughter of its sole director in an employment dispute she partially succeeded in getting over the line.

Tobie Erceg worked for Yacht Finders Global, an Auckland-based brokerage run by her father Gary Erceg, but two months after starting she quit and lobbed a missive at the firm over the way she claimed to have been treated.

The investigation has revealed “under the table” wage payments in cash to avoid harming her Work and Income benefit payments.

The Employment Relations Authority said in its decision this month that Erceg succeeded in proving she was an employee at the brokerage, despite the firm’s claim she was engaged as an independent contractor.

Authority member Alex Leulu said the test was finely balanced, given the evidence showed there was an intention to pay Erceg for her work but did not determine any intention to create an employment (or contractual) relationship.

Erceg’s claim for unjustified disadvantage was also established when the firm changed her job title from operations director to customer co-ordinator at a meeting when she wasn’t present.

She was awarded $5000 compensation for the hurt and humiliation caused by what she said was a demotion.

The authority said the “unilateral decision” to change the job title without consultation was unreasonable, but her claim for constructive dismissal was unsuccessful after it was found her resignation was due to the actions of Yacht Finders Global towards someone else, rather than her.

Erceg, who represented herself, had claimed $50,000 compensation for both grievances.

The authority found no evidence to back her claims of bullying, that Yacht Finders Global had breached its Covid-19 commitments to her, that her claim for bad faith negotiations stood up, or that she had worked “unreasonable hours”.

Much of the alleged behaviour was attributed to Erceg’s relationship with her father and their “usually informal” style of communication, the ERA said.

Tobie Erceg’s role was described as an integral part of the business and she was represented to stakeholders as a senior member of the organisation.

  • Business owner tells Employment Relations Authority ...
  • KFC employee not bullied: Employment Relations Authority ...
  • ERA ruling: Ex-couple’s business dispute ended in biting, ...
  • What does it take to fight your employer in New Zealand? ...

She was engaged by the firm in October 2022 but since April that year she had helped her father with various administration tasks, which she continued to do until December, when she resigned over a workplace dispute involving her friend Aidan Harvey.

He had been introduced to the firm, allegedly as a prospective business partner, but the relationship between him and Gary Erceg soured and in December 2022, after a dispute, Yacht Finders Global ended its work agreement with Harvey by email.

Further communication continued between the Ercegs, including what the authority described as unsuccessful attempts to mend their familial differences.

In February 2023 Tobie Erceg and Harvey jointly lodged a statement of problem against Yacht Finders Global but Harvey later withdrew his claims against the firm.

Gary Erceg declined to comment when approached by NZME. Efforts have been made to reach Tobie Erceg via social media.

In establishing whether Erceg was an employee, the authority found there was no written employment agreement or contract, with most of what was agreed to arising from a meeting at an Auckland restaurant in September 2022.

The work arrangement’s aim was for her to be introduced further into the brokerage business, leading to a possible partnership role.

Tobie Erceg understood her work was to be a continuation of the previous arrangement, the nature of which appeared to consist of irregular work when she was needed.

Before she started in a paid role there was no discussion about her work hours, payment of tax or whether she was entitled to holidays and sick leave, the authority said.

Yacht Finders Global argued that Erceg was engaged as an independent contractor, under an arrangement described as a father helping his daughter.

For this reason, the firm said it arranged Erceg’s hours at one hour a day so it would not impede her childcare responsibilities; and that her pay was treated as payment “under the table” to avoid a clash with her Work and Income benefit payments.

To facilitate this, the firm paid her through a debit card which would be topped up with each pay.

Despite initial allegations that no tax had been paid, evidence showed tax had been deducted by the payer.

Tobie Erceg said she was required to work “all hours” as required, and not the one hour as stated.

Her closing submissions referred to further claims against the firm, but they weren’t considered in the authority’s decision.

"OSPREY"

Hunt Yachts Harrier 26-2016-OSPREY Wilmington-North Carolina-United StatesOSPREY 3234641

DETAILS ABOUT THIS BOAT

OSPREY is a fine example of a very hard-to-come-by 2016 Hunt Harrier 26 powered with the optional Yamaha 300hp outboard motor with only 215 hours. Lift-kept with custom sun covers, she shows beautifully with her Stars & Stripes blue hull, Oyster White boot stripe and black bottom. In 2018 the Yamaha outboard motor was painted to match the gelcoat and a faux teak transom was applied, nice custom touches done by the Hinckley Company. Properly maintained and serviced (full outboard motor service, with computer check and compression test, March 2022) make OSPREY a true ‘turn key’ offering. This is a great opportunity to acquire a nearly-new Hunt Harrier 26 in time for Spring!

“Zefira, a magnificent, lean aluminium and carbon 50 metre yacht. A project in which, together with our designers, we put our heart”

Experienced european owners brought together a top team of Dubois, Fitzroy and Tessier to produce their dream yacht: sleek, sophisticated and impressive under sail.

The push for a single level between bridge, saloon and cockpit, combined with ultra-sleek aesthetics, nudged the Dubois design team into new territory. “To get good visibility from the helmstations we had to work hard to lower the accommodation as much as possible, while keeping an open feeling” adds McKeon.

The interior, styled and drawn by Remi Tessier , features a combination of bleached timbers and white leather which results in clean modern lines and provides bright comfortable living areas.

Fitzroy Yachts Zefira

The sea trial was pubblished on Superyacht 31 – spring 2012

Zefira S/Y is one of those few yachts that became an attraction for yacht enthusiasts and professionals  well before she hit the water.

This yacht was designed and built with the experience and passion for sailing boats her owners demonstrated from the start as well as a naval engineering and a project design team from  Ed Dubois studio for the exterior, while Remi Tessier was responsible for all the interiors. Zefira was built in a yard which enjoys a  worldwide  reputation for the construction of large sailing yachts.

fitzroy zefira

With such an opening introduction one can expect nothing less than something absolutely extraordinary, where the term used must be read in its best meaning to underscore something that has really nothing of the ordinary. We had the pleasure of talking with the owners who are currently sailing on their yacht after they had  carried out important work in the design phase with the project team to define specific guidelines and details.

Beyond the highly involving dialogue which ensued with flowing examples  of their own sailing experience and passion, we managed to grasp and better understand the idea behind the project which began with a seven metre sloop and  gradually developed in the course of the following 40 years  of which  many were spent at  sea. Putting words to emotion and feelings is never easy to do and  more so when they are other people’s. In this case however everything was a lot easier for us   thanks to our interviewee’s eloquent communicative capability.

The first point our attention was brought to was that Zefira is the largest sailing y

acht ever designed by Dubois with no fly bridge and built by Fitzroy Yachts in New Zealand.  This may strike our readers as a mere detail, but it is in fact one of the principal fundamentals outlining this project because it translates into flowing external lines and a unique profile when observed sideways on.

The choice  of doing without a fly bridge is somewhat unusual since up until  recently a “fly” had been widely accepted as  a run of the mill thing to have on a sailing yacht beyond a given size, but which nevertheless, Zefira is proud to do without giving cause for, among others ,  the following comment volunteered by some of the designers not involved in the project: “The world of sailing now stands  divided between before Zefira and after Zefira”.

Naturally enough this comment in particular is aimed at the yachts’ profile, which brings to a standstill what had become a consolidated practice on yachts this size. Aesthetics is principally  why the owners decided to do without the fly option as well as for practical reasons  they eloquently highlighted: without one  on a  50 metre sailing boat  there’s a complete total view of both what lies ahead up to the horizon and of the sail plan.

Moreover using a higher windswept and sun scorched horizontal plane rather than the main deck itself is by its very nature something destined to be exploited only sporadically and quite correctly in their opinion doesn’t justify having one.

The thought behind the whole project as the requests submitted to both designers and yard indicated,  were to enjoy a pure thorough bred for its performing lines and technical contents, capable of offering the sort of space and commodities expected when cruising extensively in all weather conditions. At a first glance the goal seems to have been easily achieved, but if  we then go into an in-depth analysis, the comments volunteered by project designers earlier seems surely appropriate. The husband and wife team (the owners) followed up on construction work from the initial stages to completion, working through the more important phases in close contact with the professional teams involved.

According to the owners the best part was witnessing the step by step progress of such an enterprise. We can understand the reasons why and genuinely  hope that in  the future such desire will generate the construction of other such extraordinary ships.

Several International prizes for design and technical contents have been awarded to Zefira. Dubois Naval Architects’ studio is proud of the recognitions bestowed since this is the largest sailing yacht project without a “fly” they’ve ever made so far and also for the passion and creativity expressed time and time again by the owners who incidentally had been the previous owners of another Dubois  project built by Alloy Yachts: Kokomo of London (now Nubero Blau). The challenge taken on by the studio was one that meant blending the huge experience acquired by the owners to innovative aesthetics, with a hull capable of delivering the sea-keeping qualities and performance requested.

The owners wished for a boat that could be another home from home: spacious, with a project design that looked ahead into the future. For this reason the design team was invited by the owners to pay them a visit and to take a look at their house to better understand what they wanted.

The choice of the yard was principally dictated by delivery times even if Fitzroy Yachts had been chosen also in function of preceding work carried out from Dubois projects.

Among some of the clever solutions highlighted by the owners in the course of our conversation we wish to mention the ease in steering they experienced and handling the yacht, of course aided by electronics and important data communication systems capable of monitoring and performing many of the required manoeuvres without hindering visibility.

The rig which is capable of carrying up to 3,000 square metres of canvass is per se a very interesting technical achievement inasmuch as it sports a 63.50 metre mast and can still be defined as being “light”. Obviously there’s a carbon fibre mast and boom, as well as fibre stays that have been purposely chosen to reduce weight high above the waterline which translates into less draught and better performance in breezes.

All of the choices adopted for Zefira mean she is very competitive on the race track even against racers and  in spite of the many commodities she carries with her.  As for the interiors and  much of the work put in by  Remi Tessier designer and the co-owner they enhanced an undoubted feeling of both tranquillity and elegance.

Gauged chromatic variety  meets the discerning eye as it takes in lighter and darker shades of handcrafted woodwork placed without ever causing excessive contrast, followed by polished steel elements and ad hoc lighting which enhances relaxation throughout every area. The space chosen to house each piece of furniture, is fruit of  careful study that has contributed into ensuring an uncompromised degree of comfort in the owners’ suite which is situated in the stern and in each of the three guest cabins as well.

One is a twin while the other two are double each one of them sports its own private bathroom. The crew quarters are situated in the bow area and with space for a lounge and crew mess room, which translates into staff’s quality living standards on board. The yacht’s convivial areas are also well distributed and large to ensure adequate privacy to guests and owners alike.

The electronics and navigation aids installed are the most modern on the market, with data and alarm control systems and displays in each of the two external command /control stations  as well as on the bridge deck as can be expected on a state of the art ship such as this. Dictated by reasons of space we have to limit our text to that which has so far been described even when the meeting with Zefira’s owners was so stimulating  we were prompted  to go further.

Since both of them  described Zefira as being a point of arrival but of departure too, we wish them to continue their research work in the yachting field and to offer us, who knows what other input and ideas in the future. For further information please contact: Angelo Colombo
