Can Anyone Explain the Forces on a Longeron?

Discussion in ' Multihulls ' started by Chotu , Jun 4, 2020 .

Hi, I’m looking at fitting a longeron to a 50’ catamaran. It’s currently without a forward cross beam at all. Nothing there. Can anyone take me through the forces from the forestay on a modern, 2 furler (screecher and working jib) headsail setup? 50’ very high performance and lightweight cruising catamaran. 60’ mast deck stepped. Need to account for anchoring forces as well, although the anchoring bridal will be attached to the bows. Considering doing something like the pic attached. Is the longeron taking any cantilever force or is it held completely by the guide wires running to the bows? Why the really high seagull striker? To keep loads on the bows in a more vertical orientation? Thanks!

Basically, to support the fore stay loads, a classic bowsprit is built as horizontal (or slightly steeved) mast with shrouds only on one side (the dolphin striker and bobstay) with guys either side . Because you can't fit a bobstay or dolphin striker to a cat bowsprit , the "seagull striker" compression post and its stays transfer the vertical forestay load to the amas, the higher the compression post the more shear as opposed to tension load on the amas. The bowsprit under the compression post is in classical compression against the fwd aka, both from the fore stay and the guys lead to each ama. FWIW, many modern cats are not rigged this way. They have a single forward tube similarly jumper stayed but to itself, making the load into the amas all shear. Fore stay loads can be calculated from GL Guidelines for Design and Construction of Large Modern Yacht Rigs.
Thank you for helping confirm and visualize the forces in this type of arrangement. I wanted to be sure I wasn’t missing any important concepts. Yes. The standard bow tube ( stayed to itself) with all loads in sheer on the amas is more common. I’ve seen these longeron-only type designs with some forestay force translated to tension in Morelli and Melvin designs and a few others, such as the example in the attachment. My thinking is it might be easier to put together this type of arrangement than a typical bow tube given the single attachment point. Also a bit more length is available to carry a larger screecher, since it extends past the bows a little. Does that seem reasonable? What are the advantages to this arrangement over the more traditional ones with a bowsprit added? Could I even use an off cut from a properly sized aluminum mast as the longeron? Since it’s all under compression, I’m guessing so. Am I missing anything in this decision?
Also, WOW. What a resource in the document you suggested for calculating the forestay loads! Thanks so much.

Wow, that render looks a lot like a beachcat with a bridle on the forestay. It doesn't look very practical for a cruising boat, what happens when you drop the rig?

McConaghy 52 Catamaran Review

Performance sailing catamaran: why we like it.

This is one of the first performance sailing catamaran designs that we feel excited about. While we admire other performance cruisers like the Balance, Outremer and HH, we have never really wanted to own one. Why? Comfort! These performance cats are all fast, they are interesting and fun to sail but the living areas are smaller than we would like to live aboard on ( check out our post on the cruising catamaran performance debate ).

The MC52 managed to overcome that hurdle for us and checks most of the boxes!

All the features we love on our current boat, the Bali 5.4 , are incorporated in this design, only more sleek, high-tech with a more luxurious interior in classic European style. And it is a windspeed boat! Which means she will sail roughly the same speed as the true wind, something that is always a negative on heavy cruising boats! Not only does this cat have the open plan living area that the Bali is famous for in the cruising community, it also has a spacious forward cockpit and a flybridge.

The MC52 is a high-tech performance cruiser but it doesn’t skimp on modern luxury features and more specifically, comfort. Comfort for cruisers is a big deal and McConaghy did not disappoint. Mark Evans says: “While yacht design company, Kerr Yacht Design from Australia, is very performance oriented, my directive to them was to draw the queen beds and design the hulls around them. There was no compromise on that”.

The outcome was walk-around beds and a lot more spacious hulls than the average performance cruiser. While this is not exactly the be-all for a performance cruiser, it definitely indicates how Mark and his team approached the design. They wanted to build a high performance catamaran without compromising on comfort. Each feature is well thought out. The elegant clean lines of the hull and fly-bridge, apartment-style living areas and open and modern platform simultaneously enables more comfortable cruising and better performance; a feat not yet achieved in any other line of multihull.

Performance Catamarans Hull Layouts Comparisons: 3-Cabin Owners Version

“Our continual innovation and investment in new materials and technologies, has allowed us to firmly establish our position at the forefront of progressive high-performance yacht building. We are constantly innovating, testing and improving our techniques, applying composite technology to new fields as well as refining the production, mechanical properties, and minimizing weight of composites in existing applications.” says Mark.

Elegant & Luxurious Interiors: Fujiki / Walnut / Oak

Main deck saloon layout: some highlights.

  • Tenderlift: Light weight hydraulic lift platform with max capacity 450kg (1000 lbs) – Hydraulic swim platform and tenderlift with remote control, Seasmart cleats, safety locks, and four folding padeyes.
  • Forward cockpit with opening front door
  • Doors and windows: Very light and fully retractable glass doors aft – Frameless, bi-folding, tempered safety glass doors between saloon and aft deck. The main salon side windows are electric sliding windows
  • The spacious saloon offers a versatile living area that is exceptionally light, and there’s direct access to the aft deck via full height glass doors.  The galley is arranged open-plan and the arrangement is particularly well suited to socialising and family living.
  • Two seating areas – Main seating area in the salon with dining table and lounge seating forward starboard with coffee table
  • Aft deck seating with dining table
  • Spacious dedicated navigation station forward port
  • Custom finishes and fabric choices
  • Carbon rig, furler running rigging, hydraulic aft platform, hydraulic centreboards, LI batteries and more are included in the base boat, price at USD 1.65m. This is a highly spec’d yacht that performs.
  • Flybridge with dual steering
  • Hydrolic centerboards with three presets

Mc52 Cabin Layouts

Mc 52 flybridge.

The MC52 has dual helm positions on the flybridge, allowing for unencumbered sight lines and an elevated operational position. The sloping coachroof design gives a feeling of not being high up on a flybridge and allows for great visibility forward. All lines come back to the flybridge cockpit for ease of sail handling. Twin McConaghy carbon fibre steering wheel positions allows for good visibility when underway and docking. A Full solar array is available and fitted on the sloping coachroof as shown on the diagram. The cockpit has a spacious lounge area with wrap-around seating. A hardtop composite bimini is option.

Centerboards

Unlike the other performance cats with daggerboards, the MC series is the only brand of catamaran with articulating composite centerboards that are hydraulically controlled.  There are three positions – the up position, which is flush with the hull for minimum draft of 1.35m (4ft5in). A middle position with a draft of 1.95m (6ft5in) and fully deployed position with a draft of 3.75m (12ft). These are three preset positions which are contr0lled by the press of a button. The centerboards are under the sole in the cabins with a safety shear pins in case of grounding.

Lifting platform / tenderlift

Lifting platform with 1000 lbs capacity. This is highly sought after feature on catamarans and the MC 52 is the only performance cat with the platform.

Integrated anchoring system in carbon fiber longeron

Construction.

McConaghy were one of the first builders in the world to apply prepreg carbon to sailing boat construction in the mid 1970’s. Built from materials previously only used in aerospace applications, the first prepreg carbon 18ft skiff, built by McConaghy, was a revelation and would set a performanc benchmark for years to come. They have a 50 year history of excellence in race boat and mega yacht building. Check out the video of their facilities.

Like the other models in the series, the MC 52 is constructed using a controlled vacuum infusion process and pressed panels of E-glass, carbon composite and Corecell for lightweight strength and rigidity.

MC 52 catamaran Polars

Engine power report.

Calm Water Speed

The chart shows the “sensible” maximum flat water cruising speed (ahead of the steep section) to be in the region of 8.0 to 8.5kt. At full power, the engine can power the boat at circa 9.5kt. With a headwind of 15kt and a representative seaway margin of 10%, the maximum speed drops to 9.2ft.

Fuel consumption and range

Reviewing the Yanmar propeller curves (see below), we have interpo- lated RPM, and fuel consumption values for each CFD processed speed, to determine the range of the boat at each speed. The fuel volume assumed to be consumed is to be the total available (i.e. 230 litres per hull).

Performance Catamarans comparisons

A fully spec’d out MC 52 comes in at 16.4t which is the heaviest of the performance cats in this comparison. With a flybridge, a forward cockpit and very spacious salon and aft cockpit, the MC52 has by far the most usable living space of any of the boats compared here. And unlike most performance cats, the entire interior of the MC52 is fitted out to mega yacht standards with luxurious liners and wall panels which results in a very luxurious look and feel. With all that, McConaghy has managed to create a great balance between quality, comfort, livability and performance and still delivers a boat capable of sailing windspeed. It is quite an impressive feat!

Born of an ambition

To design the ultimate performance cruising catamaran, every element of the new Cure 55 was designed not to reinvent the wheel but to raise the bar in every area that Catamarans in this class are judged by.

With a power to weight ratio that assures high performance but with a design philosophy focussed on safety, the Cure 55 was conceived to be able to cross oceans with speed and comfort whilst still being easily single or short handed.

Technology and process underpin any great project. Production of the Cure 55 catamaran has its foundations in the Designed For Manufacture principal and is underpinned and supported by some of the latest technology currently in use in Global boatbuilding.

Design of the Cure 55 catamaran was undertaken by Paul Bury with support from the in-house Cure Design team.

An absolute design focus on safety, performance and comfort has resulted in a vessel that redefines the way cruising catamarans are seen.

Seawind 1170 Catamaran

Available july 2024 introducing the brand new seawind 1170.

The incredible success of the Seawind 1370 has inspired Seawind to design a smaller version around 40 feet that carries similar styling lines to the 1370 and new modern hull shape, but with an interior layout more akin to their super popular Seawind 1260 that optimise space providing incredible value and comfort for live aboard cruisers.

20

Built to Sail

The Seawind 1170 is set up with a longeron beam standard with optional stayless carbon bowsprit. This allows you to run a self taking jib or genoa from the forestay, furling screecher from the longeron beam and spinnaker off the bowsprit. Plus a square top mainsail .

The hull shape features chines on the inboard and outboard hulls, providing both reserve buoyancy, interior space, yet keeping the hull shape efficient. The raked bows keep bouyuance forward while the new flat decks make walking the fore deck easier and converts to more internal volume, most noticeably in the forward cabins .

Modern Interior

  • Lightweight, modern interior design. Spacious galley with Polystone counter surfaces, timber accents.
  • Twin burner LPG stove & oven. Stainless steel pot holders. Flame failure device to shut off LPG immediately in event of flame going out.
  • Double bowl stainless steel sink.

Nominee Spotlight: HH Catamarans HH44

  • By Andrew Parkinson
  • October 4, 2023

Over the past several years, Jason and Nikki Wynn have become an internet sensation of sorts, documenting their ‘round the world cruising endeavors on their sailing YouTube channel “Gone with the Wynns,” which has grown to over a half a million subscribers, becoming the third most popular (and growing) sailing channel on YouTube today. Beginning this fall, they’ll be broadcasting their adventures from the decks of a sweet new ride—the eco-conscious and carbon-reinforced HH44 by HH Catamarans.

Poised to appeal to early tech adopters, world cruisers and serious sailors alike, the HH44 is a disruptive new entry in the catamaran market, and it’s ready to make waves as a strong 2024 Boat of the Year contender at its US premiere in Annapolis.

This new model from HH Catamarans is available in two versions: OC (Ocean Cruising) and SC (Sports Cruising). The HH44-OC is a fast, comfortable, family-friendly cruiser that skews toward ease of operation for bluewater cruising. It shares the same hull and interior fit and finish quality as the sportier HH44-SC but features an aluminum mast, e-glass longeron, white gelcoat finish and mini-keels as standard instead of daggerboards. The HH44-SC integrates the very latest in race boat technology but remains equally as comfortable as a family cruiser. This is a “no-compromise-boat” with C-shaped carbon daggerboards, a carbon rig, a painted hull finish, emissions-free motoring, cutting-edge solar integration and an EcoDrive as standard equipment.

Designed for hybrid propulsion and solar power, the HH44 was conceived from the ground up to work with a parallel electric/diesel hybrid, a 4,232 watt solar array on the cabin top and hydro-regeneration while sailing. HH’s EcoDrive provides all the benefits of an electric boat: silent fume-free motoring at 7.5kts, instant torque for maneuvering, and hydro-regeneration while sailing, while also providing the reliability of trusty diesel engines as a backup. For technology shy owners, traditional standalone diesel engines with shaft drives are also offered.

The 4,232 watts of custom integrated solar come standard, as does an electric parallel hybrid with shaft drives, folding transoms, dual swing helm stations, forward opening salon windows, line tunnels, EVA foam decking and carbon fiber design detailing throughout.

Steer the boat from the outboard position with the wind in your hair and increased visibility of your sail plan. A fold-down helm seat stows out of the way or easily deploys when needed. Or, rotate the helm(s) inboard and steer from the protection of the three-seat sofa on the aft beam.

An angular cabin allows the two large, forward-facing windows to open fully from inside the 187 square-foot salon. Ceiling height is over 6’6” throughout. Comfort underfoot has been enhanced with non-skid EVA foam decking as standard.

Carbon and epoxy construction creates the strongest yacht possible without adding weight. All lines run under the deck to create an uncluttered walkway. Stanchions are 900mm tall for safety underway, and a continuous, unbroken toe rail runs the length of the deck with all hull and deck-joints fused and hidden.

An emphasis on craftsmanship and fit-and-finish is evident throughout, with foam core furniture and meticulous joinery, top of the line fixtures and Bosch electric appliances standard. Cabinet locks are cleverly hidden in the modern design and an optional pocket TV can deploy and spin to face the viewer. Optional RGB rope lighting throughout can be dimmed or change colors depending on your vision needs while night sailing or for setting the mood at anchor.

McCONAGHY 90′ Catamaran

McConaghy 90 catamaran

Highlights of the McConaghy 90 catamaran

The McConaghy 90 is a true superyacht. She has a huge interior that can be customized to owner’s specifications. For discerning clients who seek an exceptional piece of maritime engineering, the McConaghy 90 catamaran should be on top of their list. Beautifully proportioned she embodies timeless elegance with just a hint of fighter jet aggression.

Thanks to McConaghy’s highly efficient production facilities the MC90 can be built in less than 18 months. Her specially controlled vacuum infusion process of E-glass/Epoxy, carbon-hybrid composite foam makes her much lighter than similar length catamarans. Consequently she is strong, safe and immensely stiff. The MC90 will sail at windspeed in light airs. Similar to the last generation of America’s Cup foiling catamarans, the McConaghy 90’s rigidity and full carbon longeron also allow for the elimination of the forward crossbeam, which further lightens this amazing yacht.

Sailing Sensations like a true Thoroughbred Yacht

The McConaghy 90 multihull, like high performance racing yachts, is helmed via twin pedestal steering stations positioned well aft. The elimination of the flybridge further reduces aerodynamic efficiency and weight – and at the same time lowers the stunning profile of this Grand Prix yacht. Expansive glass panels in the hulls and saloon slide open to create an inside/outside living space. The spacious forward cockpit is another key lifestyle defining feature of the MC90.

McConaghy 60 Multihull

Stunning Interior with Unlimited Options

Of course, the interior of the MC90 multihull is top class. Consequently the builder only utilizes the finest woods and hardware. McConaghy Boats custom builds every piece of furniture to uncompromising quality standards to the stylish interior design team of Design Unlimited. The timeless interior is constructed using a mix of hand-painted surfaces and lightweight, exotic wood laminates with soft fabric accents. There are a variety of layouts to choose from.

The McConaghy 90 multihull was born from the drawing board of illustrious naval architect Jason Ker. His name is associated with high performance racing yachts and the BAR Racing – British America’s Cup catamaran.

McConaghy Boats. One of the World’s Top Yards

McConaghy is not new to building the world’s most successful supermaxi racing yachts. The builder has crafted exceptional superyachts such as John Shuttleworth designed “ADASTRA” – a 140’ highly efficient power trimaran. She won both highly coveted 2013 Superyacht and Show Boat Design Awards. McConaghy Boats maintains high-tech manufacturing facilities in Hong Kong where they build the MC90 along side their model range of top end multihulls.

Configuration of our Carbon Longeron

Our carbon fibre longeron. Made from carbon fibre ex-America’s Cup mast sections. We recovered precut sections of carbon mast and replaced our aluminium forestay. The result is a much stronger and stiffer front beam and the addition of a carbon fibre longeron. This beauty has allowed us to change the way we sail our performance catamaran. We now have a bow pole to fly our fractional and masthead spinnakers from the centre of the boat. We have a very stiff, structural front beam without the need for whisker stays or any of the associated paraphernalia. We have a forestay attachment point which is super strong. And perhaps the biggest difference is the addition of the attachment point for the inner forestay which allows us to fly a storm sail or trinket.

54’ Ocean Renegade R5 - A Unique Solar Hybrid Electric Sailing Catamaran

54’ Ocean Renegade R5 Catamaran

A Unique Solar Hybrid Electric Sailing Catamaran

If you cross the pond and head south to a place feared by mariners for as long as the Cape of Good Hope has been mapped, you will find Ashley Dee. He is a yacht builder with a vision for the future and a zeal for fast sailing catamarans. He has constructed some of the most advanced carbon re-enforced, electrically propelled sailing catamarans on the market and he has expanded his build capability to satisfy the American market. Ashley led the construction the 2020 54’ Ocean Renegade R5 Catamaran named ‘Oxygen’ and with the assistance from Nova Luxe, the boat arrived in St. Petersburg, FL in October from Cape Town, South Africa. Alternating between thrill and relaxation with a sport-minded, hybrid sailboat. The Ocean Renegade series is as keen on seizing the winds as it is cruising independently while you entertain. The vessel is tightly engineered to fit all of the comforts of a live-aboard boat, but when you’re behind the helm, sails like a race boat. And like the rest of the NOVALUXE fleet, the Ocean Renegade series features emission free solar/electric technology that preserves places worth going, and gets you there without the need to stop for diesel. Local Captain Scott MacGregor with Redbeard Boatworks has had the pleasure to pilot this unique vessel on a number of charters around Tampa Bay “The boat is very responsive due to it being lightweight. It is a wonderful sailing vessel which smoothly slides through the water at almost wind speed,” says Captain MacGreggor. “The setup of the sailboat lends itself nicely to the operation with the center wheel that articulates so you can see the sails as well as the ease of the controls of the running rigging due to its location. The all electric engines make motoring quiet, quite a change from a diesel engine vibrating through the boat with the exhaust gases.” “The sail plan with the code 0 really helps move the boat along. It will sail very close to the wind and will reach back to about 120-130 degrees wonderfully. The self tacking jib makes tacking easy as well.” “In all, it is a well thought out platform and a very performance first catamaran sailboat. Long distance cruising aboard this vessel is easy and with the electrical systems the fuel dock you would not need to be a stop along the way!” To say that Oxygen is a well equipped boat would be a huge understatement. Launched at the end of 2020, she is the yard's third electric catamaran and without a doubt the most capable. Equipped with the Torqeedo Deep Blue system, the gold standard in electric yacht propulsion, and for good reason. This catamaran was built in epoxy eglass with extensive carbon reinforcing and construction, including the entire coachroof and all spars.

She has the galley and salon volume of a much larger yacht and with her twin forward sailing cockpit doors together with her large aft cockpit doors, she possesses amazing flow and energy as one moves fore and aft. Amazing views of what’s ahead and below from the overhanging unstayed carbon longeron down the center of her bow. Move aft via her secure sailing handling cockpit, all the way back to her huge "dock-like" stern scoops to enter the warm Florida waters.

Under sail she is a pleasure to manage from her secure sailing cockpit with the electric line driver and primaries making her capable of push button sail trimming of the Jib-sheet, main-sheet, and traveler at the same time, from one position. She can also be sporty and rewards an eager crew with a deck gear plan and extended longeron that is able to fly dual headsails. This is especially useful in light air.

The 54’ Ocean Renegade R5 Catamaran, Oxygen is an incredible yacht and available now, ready to cruise, with beautiful finishings and extensive cruising equipment.

Performance cruisers: the best new catamarans for racing and fast cruising 2018

McConaghy MC50 sailing

This is where the worlds of racing and cruising multis meet, where we see high-tech lightweight craft that use exotic materials and daggerboards to help produce electrifying sailing. Gunboat was arguably the first to identify this market on a luxury level, and has since been joined by HH, McConaghy, Ice Cat, and ITA.

And then there are the performance multis that are more minimalist and lean more towards the offshore racer than cruiser – like Marsaudon, Dragonfly, Banuls, Dazcat, and Rapido… fun factor guaranteed!

Just launched: McConaghy MC50

McConaghy MC50 on water

Fresh from the Australian composite wizards McConaghy, the MC50 is the smallest series catamaran in a new range that runs up to 90ft. Drawn by Jason Ker, renowned for his IRC winners, the MC50 has performance in her DNA, designed as a fast cruising cat, capable of crossing oceans. The MC line has incorporated input of experienced owners and sailors, and includes some impressive features. For example, the doors between the saloon and the cockpit concertina, while the saloon windows slide open electrically for al-fresco living. A skylight down the middle of the coachroof lets light flood in, and can be specced as a large ‘solar glass’ generator to keep batteries topped up. Then there is the standard cross brace between the bows, which has been eliminated by using a carbon fibre longeron down the boat’s centreline, tensioned with Nitronic rod stays. The first hull launched in time for La Grande Motte boatshow in April and the performance predictions are bold. Polars from McConaghy suggest speeds of over 10 knots in a stiff Force 6, at 30° off the true wind. Bear away onto a broad reach and she is expected to manage 21 knots-plus. Upwind performance is boosted by 3.5m-deep hydraulic daggerboards in each hull, which include a fail-safe in the event of underwater collision.
“We expect her to track upwind extremely well,” says James Kinloch
of McConaghy. And yet this is no pared-down raceboat. The saloon has deep seating to starboard and an extending table gives dining space for at least eight, and can convert into lounging room if you drop the table and install the fill-in cushion. The galley and island unit to port are more penthouse than deckhouse, with induction hob and moulded-in sinks. Sensibly, there is a navigation station at the forward end of the saloon, with good visibility ahead and access to all the systems. The styling was undertaken by Design Unlimited. “The concept was to create a penthouse apartment on the living deck,” says Ole John, director of McConaghy Multihulls Europe.
“The 35-40m2 of space must be the biggest for a 50ft yacht.”

First impressions

McConaghy MC50 cabin

The MC50 is a clever boat. A Ker/McConaghy project, it might be expected to be all about the performance. That has yet to be proved, but the first MC50 to launch stole the show at its La Grande Motte debut in April thanks to the sheer amount of open-plan living space it offers. The natural light and ventilation offered by using sliding doors and windows needs to be seen to be believed, and the general feeling is that of a condo/apartment on the main deck. The view from the helms on the aft flybridge is excellent, but I wonder how these relatively high positions will feel in a rolling sea. The most impressive aspect for me, however, is the engineering detail, something Ker is known for. It can be seen in the length to which he and the yard has gone with the mast base and bowsprit longeron supports, and the hydraulic centreboards that swing into the hulls. The latter offer a clever solution to the problem of providing the performance benefits of 3.5m-deep boards without swallowing excessive accommodation space. The boards have fail-safe pins that break in a collision without
risk of leaking hydraulic fluid; and they take just 12 seconds to raise. This is a boat that we are itching to sail.

Just launched: ICE Cat 61

Ice Cat 61 exterior

Italy’s ICE Yachts has been on the scene since the turn of the millennium, but it is only now making a foray into multihulls. And it is starting big, with a 61, and a 67 further down the line. Its calling card has always been style at the service of performance, and the cats will be no different. Enrico Contreas has designed a dashing hull with just a hint of reverse bow and a long, curved quarter. It’s stylish, but also practical. “Avoiding highly reversed bows allows for easy recovery of the mooring lines,” says Marco Malgara, ICE Yachts’ CEO. Likewise, the shallow curve of the coachroof is more than just a flick of the designer’s pen: it is intended to reduce windage and help the catamaran go to windward. This is one reason that she can reportedly manage near 30° true wind angles. Another is the manually-operated carbon foils that reduce her displacement by about 15 per cent, and the way the rig is designed. “The angle going to windward is almost like a monohull,” Malgara says.

ICE Cat 61 galley

The yachts are built using ultra-modern techniques. On the standard version, the hull and superstructure employ a mix of glass and carbon fibre vacuum-infused with epoxy to ensure that just 35-40 per cent of the final weight is resin. Everything on the boat is foam-cored. Customers have so far unanimously opted for the RS version of the 61, which uses all carbon fibre. ICE has tried to mitigate the handling of a large, technical boat with electric winches and a self-tacking jib. The sheets of both sails are on travellers, giving maximum sail trimming options and a tighter sheeting angle for better windward performance. The helms are towards the aft end of the cockpit, behind a pod-like console, giving the skipper more the sense of a monohull. Dispensing with a raised helm station keeps the boom and the centre of gravity low, making for a more comfortable ride and better performance, predicted at 25 knots. The interior is more architectural than your average luxury yacht. Expect more of a kitchen than a galley in the large open space of the saloon. The configuration allows for three, four or five cabins, including a compact crew berth in the starboard bow.

Coming up: HH50

HH 50 Exterior

HH Catamarans has been turning heads since 2012 with a line of sporty, high-tech boats that feature a luxury fit-out. What started off on the drawing board as a fast 48ft cruising cat has grown to 50ft in the building. “One of the biggest reasons was
the addition of a second helm station aft,” explained marketing manager
Will Hobbs. “That and, during the design review, we found we were able to increase sail efficiency by 6 per cent if we lengthened the hull.” The lay-up is all carbon, with twin bulkhead helm stations and long-skirted hulls. With a self-tacking jib and push-button controls at the helm station, she should be a breeze to sail short-handed. Her accommodation all looks very elegant – dark teak contrasting with lighter fabrics. The saloon windows are huge, letting light gush in, with a semi-horseshoe galley to starboard, a navstation forward and dining table to port. There are configurations allowing for three or four cabins. Morelli & Melvin’s design generally looks modern and aggressive (even if we question the aesthetics of the hard biminis above the helms).

Just launched: Marsaudon TS5

Marsaudon TS5 Exterior

Even if you haven’t heard of Marsaudon, you’re likely to be familiar with its work. The Brittany-based boatbuilder is responsible for some of the world’s biggest and fastest multihulls, including the trimaran IDEC 2, in which Francis Joyon demolished the round-the-world record in 2008. Operating out of an old U-boat pen in Lorient, France, this composite expert has only been crafting its own brand of cruising catamarans for a few years, but it has already become its mainstay. It began with the TS42, which has reached 10 units, then the well-regarded TS50. The new TS5 is a remodelled version of this, with all-new tooling and a length overall of 55ft. Even before the first one hit the water, half a dozen boats had been pre-sold, such is the reputation of this builder.

Coming up: ITA 14.99

ITA 14.99 Aft

ITA Catamarans is a new brand, but the team behind this 14.99 are no strangers to the trade and have experience from many of the major Italian shipyards. The naval architecture is by Francois Perus, whose Yacht Design Collective has worked with brands such as Catana and North Wind on their multihulls. The result is a sleek-looking craft with stylish dreadnought bows and refreshingly low-profile coachroof. This sets the tone for the boat, due to launch this summer, which is all about stellar performance within the envelope of a fast cruiser. Take the twin helm stations, for instance – they are perched on the aft coaming. This frees up the cockpit for socialising, without compromising the boat’s stability by putting the weight
of the helm on the coachroof. The result looks as if it could feel exposed in bad weather, although there is a wraparound seat, and the Jefa pedestal can swing inboard if necessary. The outer position gives you optimal views ahead and to windward. The dreadnought bows are designed to give extra waterline length for speed, while the long, fine underwater profile of the hulls is optimised for comfort through the waves. The flatter sections aft mean that she should plane at speed, and the winch-trimmed daggerboards improve performance to windward. High-tech foam sandwich lay-up and the use of carbon fibre in key areas keeps the hulls light and stiff.

ITA 14.99 saloon

There should be plenty of power from her fathead main and self-tacking jib. “Since most cruisers consists of one couple for sailing, the deck and running rigging had to be of a design so that one person can easily manage all sailing manoeuvres from the safety of the cockpit,” says Sonia Segato, head of marketing at ITA Catamarans. The mainsheet runs back to blocks on the aft crossbeam, where Harken 50 winches are within easy reach of the helm. It is a set-up that has worked well for monohull sailors, and this boat’s low profile coachroof makes it possible here too. The designer’s ambition is clearly bluewater, because the boat’s equipment and latest technology includes a Schenker watermaker and Oceanvolt electric propulsion, backed up with twin regenerating props that allow you to recharge the lithium-ion batteries as you sail. There’s scope for owners to choose their own interior design. “Nothing is set in stone”, says ITA. The heart of the boat is its comfy saloon, which has wraparound toughened glass windows, and the starboard hull is turned over to the owner’s suite. There are several configurations to choose from, including one with an office and another with bunks. Weight management is taken very seriously. The complete hulls weigh 2,250kg, and the whole boat is infused in one shot to come in under five tonnes. The first 14.99 will be shown
at Cannes, before the owner takes it
on a circumnavigation.

LOA: 49ft 2in (14.99m) Beam: 25ft 7in (7.80m) Draught: 1ft 10in-7ft 8in (0.57m-2.35m) Displacement: 14.5 tonnes Price: €890,000 Contact: Itacatamarans

Coming up: Gunboat 68

Gunboat 68 render

Gunboat is back to what it does best with a show-stopping design for a 68ft oceanic catamaran. An all-carbon build again, the new 68 has heavily reversed wave-piercing bows and super low-profile coachroof, giving it an elegant but muscular look. There’s something of Gotham City about this yacht. Gunboat, which is now under French ownership, has brought in VPLP design for the naval architecture. They are veterans of some of the world’s biggest, fastest racing multihulls. The design team has broadened the beam of the boat and moved the mast further aft to make her more stable and easier to handle. That said, she’ll be no slouch, particularly if you select some of the turbo options, including longer rig for bigger sails, lighter weight and longer daggerboards. Speeds in excess of 25 knots in a blow, and up to 16 knots in a Force 4 are predicted. Benoit Lebizay, Gunboat’s managing partner, says: “500 miles per day is an achievable target”.

Unlimited yacht c53.

Unlimited Yacht C53 aft view

Vittorio Malingri, Italy’s first Vendée Globe sailor, is the nautical brain behind a new fast cruising catamaran, christened the Unlimited C53. With no website, his is a stealthy operation, but the first hull is sold and already in-build on the Adriatic coast between Ancona and San Marino. The boat has been designed with an experienced navigator’s eye, so the beams connecting the two hulls are an unprecedented 1.3m above the waterline, to minimise slamming in heavy seas. Tankage and heavy equipment are all positioned low and in the centre of the hulls for balance. And there is a heavy longeron, which makes for a stiffer forestay and therefore better windward performance. The twin helms are on swinging pedestals, and the boat uses foils and T-shaped rudders to provide lift to windward. There are three broad specification levels, depending on budget, with the top spec including full carbon lay-up.

Dazcat D1295

Dazcat D1295 on water

Launched at the end of last season, the D1295 is a potent new addition to the cruiser-racer cat market. It is the smaller sister to the very impressive D1495 we tested two years ago and
leans on more than three decades of successful
offshore racing builds from this Cornish yard. These cats can outrun weather or look after
crew if caught out. Weight is kept low and central, including the engines, to create a fast smooth ride. It is also minimised wherever possible, with carbon used for the rudders, spinnaker pole V-striker, davits and bimini sections. “She points really high and is the fastest tacking Dazcat so far,” says Dazcat designer Darren Newton. “We did a two-second tack where she lost no momentum at all, which for a cruising cat is phenomenal!”

Balance 526

balance-526-16

Description

longeron catamaran

Daggerboards or Fixed Keels You can opt for either fixed keels or daggerboards (interesting in itself) and she is easy to sail short-handed despite a powerful sail plan.

Swing the helm up for a birds eye view in the sun, or swing it down and you are well protected under the bimini. They call it the Versa Helm – it’s probably this boat’s biggest USP.

This epoxy carbon reinforced racing cat is a beauty and very comfortable. You will need deep pockets and patience to buy a new one though.

The driving force for the Balance 526 came from the desire to design and build the finest performance voyaging catamaran for a couple or small family.

Multihull racer, author and designer Phillip Berman, naval architect Anton Du Toit, and reknowned catamaran builder Jonathan Paarman teamed up to develop this multihull which will take you to places in speed and comfort while retaining the ability to carry significant weight (translation: lots of toys).

You can also read our Balance 526 Owner’s Review from Tiffany and Frank on ‘Little Bird’.

  • A great balance between performance and comfort. The 526 aims high in both of these departments and delivers. She really does live up to that brand name.
  • She is able to soak up some weight, so you will get performance with all the creature comforts and toys that you need.
  • That Versahelm gives you the best of both worlds. Pop out of the coachroof when the sun is out, or head down into the aft cockpit when the weather turns for the worse.
  • Very high quality finish that is streets ahead of most production cats.
  • The 526 is a semi-custom boat so you can tailor it to your needs.
  • The visibility from both helm positions is good and obviously something that the designers worked hard on.
  • That huge shower and head in the Owner´s suite – that’s a real wow factor isn’t it?
  • I also like the orientation of the Owner´s berth: athwartships forward with good ventilation.
  • The Balance 526 is not a cheap boat. Sure, with production in South Africa you get good value for money for the spec, but this is a high end catamaran.
  • Those steps up from the hulls to the salon are pretty steep. You have to watch your footing in a seaway.
  • With slender hulls for speed, you lose space down below. That´s the compromise, of course, but it really comes into play in the guest hull, especially if you have gone for the daggerboard option. With fixed keels, you have more space in the hulls. The owner´s hull is very comfortable however and up top, the living space is extensive.

Other than this brand, we can only think of the Slyder 49 when it comes to achieving that balance between performance and comfort. But nobody pulls it off quite like Balance.

The design team of the Balance 526 has a lifetime of experience sailing, racing, cruising and building long distance blue water catamarans. Phillip Berman alone has sold over 500 catamarans through The Multihull Company. In short, these guys know their stuff.

longeron catamaran

A Powerful Sail Plan She sails at high speeds with ease: this is a boat that has been designed to clock off the nautical miles. Her rig, reefing systems and sheet handling are as simple as a charter cat- she´s a forgiving boat to sail despite her powerful sail-plan, her top speed, and the way in which she pulls the apparent wind forward.

Flexible Helm Position The self-tacking jib is efficient and all of the sail handling can be done at the helm: lines come back to a winch station just to the starboard side of her Versahelm in the “up position.” Or you can opt for lines to run into the aft cockpit- it´s customisable.

Another standout feature is the visibility. Someone has been doing some serious sight-line checking on this boat- even when sailing on autopilot, with the remote control in hand, the visibility is superb. Whether you are down below, up top, sitting in the saloon, or in the aft cockpit, the visibility is top notch.

And the finish of the interiors is high quality. She doesn´t quite hit the quality of something like the OC60 catamaran from Ocean Explorer, but that´s not a fair comparison. Value for money for the quality level you get, the Balance wins.

This is the area where the Balance 526 scores top marks. One of the philosophies behind balance was to achieve the optimum mix of performance and comfort. They have aimed high in both departments. One key objective for the designers and builders was to keep the weight of this yacht down to under 10 tons light-ship- this gives owners plenty of margin for extras and toys.

longeron catamaran

The build quality is high and the overall philosophy is to keep things simple, just in case something breaks in the middle of nowhere (as it will on a boat).

Sailing in the Teens The Balance 526 likes to sail in the double digits in a decent breeze. She should approach true wind speed, sailed well with the right sails up, and she gets going quickly in light winds. On a long passage, you´ll hit 20 knots and over.

Once you have 16 knots of wind or more, this boat really takes off and will average 12 to 15, and more down the waves. Upwind she will point from 31 to 34 degrees apparent, comparable to the the best monohulls. And all this while able to carry a significant payload.

Designed for Short-Handed Sailing The Balance 526 has been designed to be comfortably sailed by a couple, or even solo. She has two headsails on furlers, one being the self-tacking jib, and all the lines run back into the cockpit, so you can sail totally protected in bad weather (Versahelm down).

But the 526 is a semi-custom boat. Some owners handle their lines in the upper helm position alone, some have line handling, like the mainsheet for example, in the aft cockpit. Everything is very tidy with all the line ends tucked away in a big storage box .

The standard boat comes with an aluminum mast made by Southern Spars, but there is an option for a carbon spar, also by Southern Spars. The same goes for the fore-beam and longeron.

Polar Diagrams

Polars for Fixed Keels and Daggerboards. In the Daggerboard version, the polars map the speed achieved with the boards fully down. In reality, the speed will increase further off the wind as the boards are raised.

balance 526 polar diagrams

Under Power

The 526 comes with dual Yanmar 45s but everyone upgrades to the 57s as there is no weight penalty. They’ll shift you along at 10 knots when you are going full pelt. Motor her on one engine at a decent RPM (2300) and you’ll see 7-8 knots. She’s got a good range at this speed.

Both engines are housed in their own aft compartments, away from the living spaces with thick sound insulation, so she is very quiet under power.

longeron catamaran

The Best Shower on the Market? The owner´s hull shower and head (aft) is huge: something that was developed at Berman’s insistance.

The master suite has a queen-sized bed athwartships forward. This has allowed the designers to keep the hulls sleek for maximum speed through the water while keeping the comfort levels up.

In the guest hull, there’s a double in the aft cabin that runs fore and aft in the aft cabin. On the port side, the head and shower rooms are separate which makes it more comfortable when both cabins for and aft are occupied.

In the salon, there´s a cosy nav/office station with good views around and a U-shaped galley. A big sofa wraps around convertible tables, and the window aft is a slider to connect the salon with the aft cockpit. The whole area is well thought out for long distance live-aboard cruising, whatever the weather, highly finished and very comfortable.

Once you have experienced this boat, you will appreciate that the designers Berman and Du Toit have tapped into thousands of hours of sailing experience to produce this catamaran. She’s a real beauty.

How much is a Balance 526? Well, that depends on the options you go for of course, but prices start at $1,440,000 FOB from the  South African Factory. A fully cruise equipped model is approximately $1,650,000 FOB from the South African Factory.

Which is the better catamaran? The 526 with daggerboard or the 626 with fixed keels? You will achieve faster speeds to windward with less leeway with the daggerboard version, so if that if performance is a top priority, then that answers your question. But the difference is less than you might think – the fixed keel 526 is still a very fast boat and comes with some advantages – less complex to sail, less to go wrong, more room in the hulls amidships and so on. The main advantage with the daggerboards is in lighter winds.

Other Boats

The competition is hotting up in the 50ft performance catamaran segment. You’ll also probably want to check out our Seawind 1600 review and take a look at the HH50. The Balance is a tough boat to beat however.

Radiators fail once more: Moscow suburbs residents appeal to Putin

R esidents across the Moscow suburbs are besieged by a heating problem, for which they plead direct intervention from President Vladimir Putin. These individuals have yet to experience any semblance of home heating since winter started due to a dwindling supply of heating oil. The issue, one largely avoided by local authority communication, has left residents desperate to the point of directly appealing to the president.

While plots have been uncovered to disrupt Ukraine's infrastructure for a second consecutive winter, thus depriving civilians of heating, it seems Russians are now mired in their crisis. Irony drips from the fact that those under Putin's leadership are looking to cause turmoil in Ukraine, yet at home, they face a similar predicament.

Many dwellings within the Moscow agglomeration are presently without heat. The capital's residents are desperate, directly appealing to President Putin due to a perceived lack of alternate avenues for assistance. The absence of suitable heating functionality since winter commenced pushes them towards desperation with no relief in sight.

This seems improbable, but in Russia, it appears that anything can happen.

It remains uncertain if Vladimir Putin is actively addressing the heating crisis. Some experts suggest that Russia's heating oil reserves are depleting, which negatively affects residents' quality of life. Plagued by cold radiators and plummeting winter temperatures, these citizens have directly addressed their pleas to their head of state.

This heating crisis is happening in Elektrostal, a town approximately 71 miles from Moscow.

Ironically, Russia has constantly aimed to destroy the Ukrainian infrastructure since war broke out, deliberately trying to leave Ukrainians without heating during the harsh winters, aiming to break their strong will. It's an irony they now struggle with a domestic heating crisis, particularly near Moscow, their largest and most pivotal city.

Desperate individuals are reaching out to Vladimir Putin. They question his knowledge of the heating infrastructure conditions in the Moscow suburbs and the dire situations residents face there. Sundown brings no relief from the harsh Russian winter and without heating, their houses turn cold. With elections nearing, more and more residents find themselves reaching out directly to their president.

"Since winter's start, we've been without heating. This has been a yearly occurrence for the past three years. Despite paying for heating, we don't have enough. We implore you, help us!" - these are the desperate pleas from the heavily dressed populace dealing with the Russian winter conditions.

Experts attribute the heating oil shortage to international sanctions and surging demands for diesel fuel, pivotal to military operations. Russia now grapples with a dearth of raw materials essential for boiler and heating plant operation. As supplies dwindle, houses grow cold with little hope of any immediate corrective intervention.

It would be adequate if the war ceased, residents were prioritized, and attention accorded to their welfare.
