We hired Mike to assist in selling our 1988 Catalina 36 foot sailboat. He had it listed and sold within 3 weeks! It was the easiest process I could have imagined. He took care of everything and walked us through all the steps. We would highly recommend Mike and Dorgan Yachts to anyone looking to sell their boat! We plan on going through him when we purchase our next sea lady!! Thank you so much Mike!

I met Mike Dorgan when we flew to San Diego to look at several boats. I have been looking at boats for over ten years, and have recently purchased my first sailboat with his help. Mike would be the only boat broker I will trust completely in the future. He is the best. Seriously. His practical knowledge and his personal experience from decades of sailing and brokering boats was an unbelievable boon to a client, especially a new sailor with new certificates and minimal voyage experience. I must admit, I am not an easy customer. The seller was not an easy seller either, and Mike's experience with the process helped close the deal through three counter-offers, sea trial and survey findings and final negotiations to get me a great boat for good value. Mike has a reliable network and the professionals he suggested were excellent in their fields. He then scheduled things for me very efficiently to take only one trip from out-of-state to complete the survey/sea trial and addressed my every concern, answered every question, and ran every test I asked for and needed. He was there every step of the way. He is honest, practical, caring, and went the extra mile (several times!) to successfully follow through to taking possession of my boat (and a previously unregistered dinghy) with complete paperwork for all loan, insurance and travel requirements. Mike is just a pleasure to work with, and I recommend Dorgan Yachts unhesitatingly to anyone.

I could absolutely ramble on for days about how happy I am with Mike Dorgan. I'll keep this simple and short. If I could leave a 10 star review, it would be closer to showing just how satisfied I am with Mike. Highly recommend.

Mike is the ultimate value add yacht broker. He seemed to pour his heart and soul into helping us purchase our first boat, a Beneteau 393. We were not the easiest buyers with lots of small (in hindsight nit-picky) issues that Mike never showed any irritation handling. No job is too small or too big for this professional. We also purchased the vessel while living in Seattle which added to the complexity. Could not have gone smoother and most importantly, we purchased feeling confident about the purchase having leaned on Mike's deep expertise. Thank you Mike and Dorgan Yachts for your terrific service.

We were very impressed with our experience buying our sailboat with Mike Dorgan! Mike was the listing broker for the Catalina 350 we were interested in purchasing. We felt he was very professional and fair in representing the interests of both parties. He helped us navigate through the buying process, purchase offer, sea trial, and survey. Mike was extremely knowledgeable about the features of the sailboat and provided very helpful advice regarding furling systems. We were especially impressed with how Mike went beyond the call of duty... When we were closing the sale, he informed us that he fixed a major item which we did not expect to be fixed. Because we lived at a great distance, Mike made sure the boat was in turnkey condition before we sailed our boat home. If you are seeking a knowledgeable boat broker with exceptional customer service, I would strongly recommend Mike Dorgan.

This is Nik; Shinsuke Nikaido, a senior sailor from Seattle. One day I found a 2011 Beneteau 40 on yachtworld.com. After searching a boat for more than three months, this boat looked very attractive to me. So same day I called to the listed broker, Mike Dorgan of Dorgan Yacht in San Diego. As my English is second language, I had not good experiences in talking with yacht brokers in Seattle, Florida and other cities. Soon after talking with Mike Dorgan, I felt very easy with his friendly way of talking. He explained about the boat carefully with lots of knowledge in professional way with simple clear English. So I made my first offer same day. At my third offer, I could made a deal with the seller. Mike's suggestions were very helpful and useful to get the deal. Later Mike told me he got four prospect buyers waiting after me. As I am away from San Diego, he prepared all most everything for me, papers works, lawyer, insurance, recording, haul out for boat survey, sea trial. Everything were really ready when I visited San Diego with my wife after 2 weeks sailing in Vancouver Island. My real reason to purchase this boat is to make my dream come true, sailing back to my homeland. However I have no experiences of crossing Pacific Ocean. Mike Dorgan has been so helpful to give me millions advises of sailing courses, ocean weather, equipment list, finding a dock, recommending to talk to his personal friends for my dream with his plenty of experiences and knowledge. Even I am away from California, he help me to grade up this boat in details. Without him, I could not prepare many thing ready for my plan to set sail on time. I will talk about good Mike Dorgan to my people when I will arrive in Japan. Nik : Shinsuke Nikaido

Caveat Emptor to the nth degree, especially if You are a Buyer using them as Dual Agency. Believe only what you can confirm not spoken words or "indications". Understand that they bid business rather than handle one deal at a time. So if someone else comes along that offers more or has different arrangements before your deal has closed you can bet yours will mysteriously expire with a vague explanation & no opportunity to respond. Only use a Buyer's Broker with them, make sure every i is dotted & T crossed. They do not use a standard contract ie; CYBA - again, not a level playing field.

We just bought a yacht from Mike Dorgan and are very happy. He went above and beyond the call of duty with organizing the sea trial, recommending great vendors and even helping us move the boat once the final paperwork was completed. I would recommend Mike to anyone that wants a thorough transaction.

San Diego Sailcast Episode Recap

dorgan yachts san diego

Episode 006 - Commodore Mike Dorgan

Commodore Mike Dorgan sat down with Alli Bell to discuss life as the 2018 SDYC Commodore, how he came to San Diego as a Star sailor back in the '80s, the growth of the local Finn fleet and more!

Mike Dorgan starts by summarizing the busy weekend at the Club including the cruising fleet cruise to Ensenada, the Taste of Point Loma and the International Masters Regatta. He talks about the history of the Masters regatta and tells us a little more about the races and friendly competition.

Dorgan came to San Diego from the Deep South, Alabama. He started sailing in Jacksonville, Florida at six weeks old and the love of sailing held on. He spent his childhood crewing for his father on a Thistle. He also sailied in Lasers and fell in love as an adult with the Star boat, which played a big role in bringing him to San Diego. He tells the story of coming to San Diego, meeting up with SDYC’s Eric Doyle, training for the ’92 Olympic Games, and crewing for Mark Reynolds and for Chick Rollins (a couple months after heart surgery).

On a 20-something adventure to Pacific Beach one night, Dorgan tells us the story of meeting and sailing with local legend Vince Brun. “The skippers would walk around the parties, look around and ask guys what they weigh,” he told us.

Commodore Dorgan met his wife over an onion cheeseburger at a local bar and grille. He tells the story of falling in love with Patti and how she changed his life. He continues about his children, their successes with sailing, SDYC and sailing against his son.

For many years, Commodore Dorgan was the only one with a Finn boat in the SDYC parking lot. He tells us about his experience building up the Finn fleet at the Club, and the reason why Finn’s are a great boat to sail. He reflects on last weekend’s Acapulco Challenge and the relationship that SDYC has with the Acapulco Yacht Club as well as the Puerto Vallarta races and Extreme Sailing Series.

Commodore Dorgan congratulates some of the SDYC members that are doing big things including Vince Brun (Sailing Hall of Fame), Tyler Sinks (Resolute Cup & Lipton Cup). He finishes by talking about his business, Dorgan Yachts, and how it’s more than a business to him. He explains some of the heart-warming parts of yacht sales. “I always say the best days of a sailor’s life are Saturday and Sunday.”

I have been a boater most of my adult life. My first slipped boat was a Santana 30 purchased in 1979 and ownership has been a part of my life since then. Due to a chance meeting with a friend, I learned about the opportunities in the boating industry and that led to a new exciting career in yacht sales in 2000 working with Tom and Brendan. I had actually known Brendan since 1986 when I bought a new Catalina 36 from him!

My first priority is to determine your boating wants and needs. I will take the time and effort necessary to find the best boat for you. I will use my experience as a boat owner and knowledge of the current market to be sure you get the best value in the boat you select. You can count on my dedication to help you through the negotiation process, sea trial, survey, slip selection and legal paper work. The ultimate goal is to help you become a happy and satisfied boat owner. Our relationship will continue past delivery day. The testament to this statement is the fact that over half of my business for many years has come from previous customers. My goal is to exceed your expectations! Bradley Avery

Hailing from Alaska, Bradley grew up around boats, beginning with lakes and then on Prince William Sound where the family had a 30’ Californian, The Great Escape. Years later, he experienced those same waters aboard the 53’ Delta Marine, Purse Seiner, F/V Alaskan Spirit, fishing for salmon out of Valdez. An obsession with waterskiing, despite the cold waters of Alaska, entailed many hours on and behind an assortment of water ski boats, over the years. This passion continued post college and after a short stint of competition skiing, in Florida, he joined Sea World of Texas, performing in water ski shows there. An offer to perform at a show in Germany allowed him to explore Europe. It was in Portofino, Italy, where he learned that many yachts cross the Atlantic to get to the warmer climes of the Caribbean, at the end of the Mediterranean Summer. He decided to forgo his plane ticket home and joined a classic 12 meter, Seven Seas, racing in the late summer classic series, held in various ports around the Med. After that he joined the ketch, Oceana, a 71’ Ocean, to sail across the Atlantic, to Antigua. That crossing gave Bradley the true taste of blue water sailing and he spent the next few years racing and delivering boats around the world. A trip across the Pacific allowed him to discover the beauty of New Zealand, where he jumped ship and for the next 17 years made the mountain town of Queenstown, his home.  Bradley now lives in Los Angeles, close to Marina del Rey, where he and his wife, Kismet, enjoy exploring Santa Monica Bay, on Saida, a Jeanneau 349, that they sailed down from San Francisco together, Bradley’s favorite passage of all. Beyond the water, Bradley’s experience as the Executive Producer/Owner of  one of the top international service production companies, in New Zealand and as a Commercial Real Estate Broker in Los Angeles, allows him to negotiate the process of buying and selling yachts seamlessly. Bradley can be found at the Marina Del Rey office located at 4655 Admiralty Way Suite 208, Marina del Rey, CA 90292 or can be reached via email at [email protected].

General Comments About the Website

FROM Donald:  " This is an awesome website. I found the information that I needed right away from one of the over 20,000 free articles that you provide as a public service. I'm surprised that so much if this site is free. But I still signed up so I could access the thousands of expanded pages, interesting articles, and dozens of valuable programs! The member's library of books, magazines and videos that I can view online is really terrific! I understand that you and your staff are all unpaid volunteers. Please keep up the good work. And I commend you for your plans to add another 10,000 free informative articles over the next year. I'm thrilled to support you in this endeavor with my small membership donation. Thanks again for all your hard work. "

FROM Huey:  " I agree with my Uncle, I too have found the articles to be very enlightening. They say that it will take about 100,000 articles to cover the full scope that they have envisioned for the website. They have over 20,000 articles so far and that's doing pretty well, but it could take several years to get the rest. I also noticed that many of the Main Topic Pages and some of the article pages are still in the rough draft stage. I guess that they will fill in as they can get volunteers to work on them. But what I can't figure out is why anyone would spend the time writing informative in depth articles just to give away free to this website for publication? What's in it for them? "

FROM Dewey:  " Well Huey, to me It looks like most of the articles on this website are written by very informed people, like boating instructors, boat designers, boat builders, riggers, electricians, fitters, marine repair technicians and marine surveyors. Writing such articles helps establish them as knowledgeable professionals. After all, this website was originally created by a school for marine technicians and marine surveyors. The website is growing in content every day. They even had to move to a bigger, more powerful server because the website's traffic has been growing exponentially. "

FROM Louie:  " I agree with everyone above. This site is quickly becoming the ultimate reference resource about every aspect of boats and ships for everyone from the beginning recreational boater to the seasoned professional mariner. I use the topic pages on the right sidebar to browse around the website. It's like a Junior Woodchucks' Guidebook for Boaters. Their Members' Library of over 300 popular and obscure books and over 200 magazine back issues that can be viewed online is fabulous. The Academy's magazine is especially informative. On top of that, there is the "Ask-An-Expert program for members where you can get an expert's answer to any of your boat questions. And a whole years membership is only $25. What a deal! I really love being part of this "Everything About Boats" community and help provide thousands of helpful articles free to the public. I think that I'll sit down right now and write an article about my experiences boating with my uncle. "

FROM Scrooge: " You rave about this website like it was the best thing since sliced bread. Well, I think it stinks. Sure, it has a lot of good information for boaters, and they're adding more every day, but it will probably never be finished. Furthermore, I don't even own a boat. And I wouldn't have a boat even if someone gave me one. Boats are a waste of money and time and energy and money! They're just a hole in the water you pour money into. If you gave me a boat, I'd sell it quicker then you could say Baggywrinkle. Then I'd lock up the cash with all my other money so I could keep my eye on it and count it every day. Bah humbug. "

FROM Daisy:  " I'm just so glad that Donald got the boat so we and the boys could enjoy boating — together. And of course all of the girls, April, May, and June, love to be on the water too, especially when that is where the boys are. Oh poor Scrooge, boating is more fun then you could possibly imagine. "

FROM Scrooge: " After seeing how much fun you all have on the water together, I regret that I didn't have that much fun when I was young. I've had a change of heart, and I'm giving each of you a Lifetime Academy Membership . "

FROM Editor:  " For those of you that have stayed with us this far, many thanks, and we hope that you found this little narrative informative.
