Just as a captain on a plane has the final say, so does a captain of a boat.

CARIBBEAN CATAMARAN BAREBOAT CHARTERS:

For seasoned sailors, it is thrilling to sail among the four principal islands: Martinique , St. Lucia, St. Vincent and Grenada . With constant 10- to 25-knot winds, the sailing is among the best on the planet. Anchoring nightly in peaceful and safe anchorages gives sailors liberty to explore and soak up British and French isle culture.

7 DAYS SAILING ITINERARY IN THE BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS:

Day 1st – Depart Roadtown, Tortola for The Bight, Norman Island  You can stop at the entry of Normal Island to snorkel the Caverns. The sea life isn’t really vibrant, but it’s exciting to snorkelling into some of the caverns, which are not rather deep. Pick up a mooring buoy in The Bight. The William Thornton called Willie T is the pirate ship that is floating /restaurant you can’t miss. The feeling is fun and the food is rapid. Ashore is the Pirates Pub bar & grill where you will generally hear live music, pleasure. Beware of the barrelled pirate rum!

Day 2nd – Depart The Bight, Norman Island for the Indians Pick up a mooring buoy. The Indians is mainly a dive and snorkel spot. The stone are dark coloured as they protrude above the waterline, but under the waterline is a view that is completely different! The reef is like a wall of tropical fish, sea fans and brilliant coral.

Day 3rd – Depart the Indians for Cooper Island and Salt Island Cooper Island has a restaurant ashore for dining and a white, palm fringed beach for exploring. The scenery is quite unique from the other islands as it is more open, yet very well protected. At nighttime you’ll be able to see across the Sir Francis Drake Channel and occasionally can catch a glimpse of a 200’ schooner with lighted sails. This is a great area for the children to a little fun on the dinghy. And, one of the finest characteristics it the sunset! It’s certainly fantastic…colours like you haven’t seen! Pick up a mooring buoy. Salt Island is the well known place of the Wreck of the RMS Rhone. This is an excellent location for the divers in your group to take their first dive. It’s possible for you to rent dive equipment to take onboard or you can set up a rendezvous ahead of time. Salt Island is, in addition, great for exploring. Ashore are three salt ponds which belong to the British Crown, but are managed by the local people. You can purchase salt that is picked, research the shore to find several shells, numerous kinds of stone and sea glass.

Pick up a mooring buoy for your overnight stay. Trellis Bay is famous for full moon celebrations, which bring a fantastic celebration with a delicious BBQ, mocho jumbee stilt dancers, fire jugglers, live music and astounding fireballs! Besides the monthly full moon parties, Trellis Bay is also a very energetic bay decorated with tons of local artwork created by Aragorn who owns the art studio in Trellis Bay. The fresh baked bread loaves are delectable!

Day 4th – Depart Trellis Bay for The Bathrooms  Leave early so you can fix a prime mooring buoy at the Baths! The Baths are unbelievable with enormous boulders (house sized) actually piled in addition to each other. There are several routes through the boulders that lead from one amazing shore to the next. There’s a pool, and a restaurant for an enjoyable lunch with an amazing view at the top at the Baths.

The hi-light of the bathrooms is undoubtedly the rock climbing/exploring (there are ladders, platforms and ropes to assist), but the snorkelling is, in addition, awesome. It is simple to spend all day here!

Day 5th – The Baths for Gorda Sound You should depart by early day from the Baths to pick up an overnight mooring ball in Gorda Sound. There are several places to go and explore. Eating at Saba Rock isn’t recommended, but you should truly see with Saba Rock where you are able to walk around the back side of the isle in the Saba Rock Gardens – the landscaping is beautiful and encompassed completely with conch shells. There are hammocks to relax in, a gift shop, a game room and you’re sure to find huge tarpon at the pier after sunset. The Bitter End is, in addition, excellent for night time fun.

This is mainly a snorkel and dive stop. The reef is huge, incredibly vibrant and dynamic. This would be a great location for a dive. Great Harbour is home of the infamous Foxy’s. Really dynamic parties can be discovered several times a year. Foxy frequently plays his guitar live adlibbing tunes as he goes – typically humorous songs about anyone in his presence, when the enormous bash isn’t happening. It’s a good time. The BBQ dinner is really great. There is usually a friendly, crab-chasing gold Labrador on the seashore. You can cool down with a delicious ice cream at the store just a brief walk down the shore.

Day 6th – Green Turtle Cay You’ll drop anchor at Sandy Cay or pick up a mooring buoy at Green Turtle Cay. Both offer white sandy, deserted isles with snorkelling, exploring and swimming. This would be a great time for a picnic lunch! 

Cane Garden Bay is completely seashore ashore with water sports and restaurants. Quito, a well-known local vocalist is excellent for night-time enjoyment (at times isn’t overly good for children), but the best food is found at Myett’s Garden Inn and Grille (highly recommended.) If you’d like to do some exploring Callwoods rum distillery is also found at Cane Garden. There is some snorkelling, but Cane Garden Bay is best for relaxing on the beach. This is a terrific place to rent a water bike or a kayak if you don’t lease any water playthings for your yacht. You will comprehend the infamous tire- swing ashore whose image is used in several magazines that are Caribbean.

This was the holiday of a lifetime. When we returned, we immediately got off the boat and walked straight into the office to book again for the following year.

We had an absolute blast. And really the boat was the centre piece of that. It was everything we could have asked for; spacious, luxurious, comfortable, plenty of water storage and fridge/freezer space, room to spread out, great cooking facilities, plenty of lounging areas and a hot shower and comfy bed at the end of every day.

Perhaps most importantly it allowed us to ‘choose our own adventure’! This holiday had it all…. turquoise waters, swimming, snorkeling, fishing, isolated beaches, white sand, incredible walks, beach combing, whales, dolphins, turtles, tropical fish, and some high sea adventures! It’s one thing to visit the Whitsundays, it’s another altogether to holiday ON the Whitsundays. Being on the water 24/7 is an experience unlike any other… it was pure joy!

We loved being on our own (the perfect covid safe holiday really!), enjoying each others company and everyday being an adventure. Not to mention relaxing and unwinding with the most amazing scenery and sunsets. This is a holiday you and your children will remember forever!

Thank you again to the Whitsunday Escape Crew for another amazing experience in the magnificent Whitsundays. We had a wonderful 10 days onboard the Seawind 1260 Volare, which kicked off with a great brief by Amee who was very thorough and very knowledgeable about operating Volare safely.

Throughout the charter the support from the ops team is first rate. Whether you want to know where the best place to overnight for the conditions, or if you need some advice about the boat, they will always go the extra mile to ensure you have the best holiday possible. Shoutout to Jordans mobile outboard repairs that paid us a quick visit in Stonehaven to help sort us out.

The absolute highlight for this trip was the time we had all of Whitehaven Beach entirely to ourselves for a few hours on a sunny afternoon. A magical moment that is unlikely to be repeated.

We’re already booked in for our next charter with Whitsunday Escape over Christmas and can’t wait to get back up there.

Doris and Steve in Yugoslavia 1989

In 1972, Steve and Doris Colgate introduced “flotilla cruises” to the United States market. After leading more than 70 flotilla sailing cruises worldwide with Offshore Sailing School alumni participating, the Colgates started a program called Colgate Sailing Adventures®. They turned the flotilla cruise helm over to longtime cruising sailors Heather and Nate Atwater. Since 2016 the Atwaters have hosted and led most Colgate Sailing Adventures® flotilla sailing holiday cruises in Italy, Greece, Croatia, Thailand, the Seychelles, Tahiti, Bahamas, Belize, British Virgin Islands, and all over the Caribbean. Who Should Participate in a Flotilla Cruise:

Offshore Sailing School encourages everyone who loves to sail, especially those who have earned US Sailing Bareboat Cruising Certification, to purchase a cabin as a single or couple and join these hosted sailing trips. It is important to realize, however, that the boats you sail on are not cruise ships. There are no elevators, medical facilities, and captained launches that take you to shore and back. You will sail with others on 40′ to  50′ monohulls and catamarans that require a certain level of physical ability and the desire to participate in handling the boat. Check out our Flotilla Cruising FAQs , and note these points below:

• Flotilla cruises are hands-on activities that require unaided mobility, getting on and off boats, dinghies, and docks.
• All participants must complete a Sailing Resume before being confirmed for the trip.
• A Skipper and Mate are assigned to each boat based on the completed Resumes. In certain countries, each Skipper must have the International Proficiency Certificate, which is easy to get if you have US Sailing Bareboat Cruising Certification. Learn more about the IPC here .
• All participants are expected to trim sails, steer, anchor, dock, pick up moorings, cook, and clean up.

Colgate Sailing Adventures® flotilla cruise sailboat vacations are for sailors who enjoy the company of other sailors.  As stated earlier, each boat must have two bareboat cruising certified sailors aboard (the designated skipper and mate). Still, all participants should have minimum certification at the Learn to Sail level on boats of at least 26’ in length.  The minimum age for participating in our sailing vacations is 18. With easy access from the mainland airport of Athens, Zorba Cat will set the sails and head straight for the Saronic Islands as you spend the next week under sail, discovering all the islands offer. Your route will entirely depend on the wind and weather and also the feeling of all the guests onboard. Aga will help guests plan their connection from the airport to the island of Salamina, where you will meet the boat. Full details of this will be given upon booking – all you have to do is get to the airport!

As well as a plethora of uninhabited islands that make for great remote escapes off the beaten track and away from the tourist hustle and bustle, the islands also consist of the inhabited main islands of Salamis, Aegina, Agistri and Poros. The island of Hydra is sometimes added to the Saronic’s list and, as long as the winds permit, is one of Aga and Greg’s favourite places to take guests.

From afternoon anchorages on remote islands perfectly lined with crystal coves for swimming and snorkelling to the very best, tried and tested tavernas on the main islands, there won’t be time to see it all, and you’ll be longing to return before you’ve even stepped foot off the boat. There is something for everyone sailing with Zorba Cat, from relaxing on the sun deck to learning the ropes under the guidance of Greg; the experience really is yours to make.

Every Greek island has its unique personality, and although they all offer the best of Greek hospitality, they cater to people of all ages and interests. One place that should be on everyone’s bucket list is the UNESCO heritage site of the ancient theatre in Epidavros . We highly recommend visiting this site. While you’re on this coast, you shouldn’t miss out on the sunken city of Epidavros, which offers an unforgettable snorkelling experience.

We will meet on the pistachio island of Aegina in the bustling waterfront port where tavernas line the shore and boutique shops dot the charming back streets. Perhaps take a taxi to explore the architectural wonders of the ancient city of Temple of Aphaia, which is impressively built on the hill. Aga and Greg’s favourite harbour on Aegina is the quiet  fishing village of  Perdika where you can find the “nicest people in the world”! 

The Saronic showpiece has to be Hydra , with its ancient port carefully lined with well-preserved stone houses rising from a chic, history-charged harbour. Known as the jewel of the Saronic,  Hydra   has no car traffic, so donkeys are the best way to get around!

In the south of the Saronic’s sits the chic Poros harbour   and the tiny fishing village on Methana . Poros offers impressive views from its clock tower on top of the hill while white-washed, tiled roofs tumble down to the waterfront, lined with authentic tavernas, often playing local music in the evenings. Methana is the perfect overnight stop for reaching Aga and Greg’s friends, who own an authentic Greek vineyard in the hills. Aga can help to arrange a vineyard tour and dinner here if guests wish – (please ask her once you have boarded!)

Zorba Cat is a large modern Fountaine Pajot Eleuthera 60ft catamaran. She has four private ensuite cabins for guests: two master aft ensuite cabins (that can be split into a twin if needed) and two double forward ensuite cabins. All cabins are complete with modern push-button toilets and wet room-style showers.

With a generous saloon and a well-equipped galley, Zorba Cat was built with charter and guest comfort at the forefront of her design. She has two dropped transoms with swim ladders making easy access into the water and cushioned nets to lay out and relax at the bow. Whether you’re a family, couple, or solo traveller, there’s something for everyone with Zorba Cat’s charters. Expect an unforgettable sailing holiday with her!

Authentic Greece

During all of Zorba Cat’s voyages, the main aim is to avoid tourist crowds and instead opt for small harbours or anchorages next to deserted islands. Each day, guests stop for a swim in beautiful bays, some of which are wild, while others have a small taverna serving fresh fish and seafood for lunch, often taken out of the water before their very eyes. Guests have the opportunity to jog or practice yoga in the morning, enjoy organic healthy food on board, and experience a healthy lifestyle close to nature. Friendly locals, as well as delicious food and wine, are common features on all the islands that Zorba Cat visits.

All Zorba Cat voyages offer a perfect balance of relaxation, sightseeing and sailing! Depending on the itinerary, Aga and Greg recommend and help to organise excursions to historical sites and other places worth visiting.

A Typical Day

After a peaceful night’s rest, you can start your day by indulging in a wholesome breakfast, take a leisurely stroll ashore and savour a delicious cup of coffee while admiring the scenic surroundings.

We usually sail for a few hours each day until we arrive at a stunning bay with a deserted beach. There we have plenty of time to enjoy activities such as snorkelling, swimming, sunbathing, exploring the island or bay, and reading books. Together, we prepare a light lunch, and the Greek salad seems to be an ideal choice for a hot day. After lunch, we take some downtime, and maybe even a little siesta or a swim before setting sail again.

Zorba Cat has stand-up paddle boards, a double kayak, water skiing, inflatables and snorkel masks for guests to use included in the ticket price.

In the afternoon, we’ll set the sails again to a new location. If you’re interested, you can learn how to steer, tie knots, and pull ropes. Alternatively, you can simply relax and sunbathe on the deck. Before the evening arrives, we will arrive at a new island and dock in a charming little village. There, we will explore the area and enjoy the beautiful sunset, which is rumoured to be even more impressive than the one in Santorini!

In the evenings, our main focus is to unwind and take things slowly. We usually head to a traditional Taverna to sample some amazing local food and delicious Greek wine while enjoying live music and dancing some Zorba. “No hurry” is our motto for the night.

The ticket price includes breakfast and lunch, and Aga will be your host and main chef on board Zorba Cat. However, guests are welcome to participate in all aspects of life on board and often assist with food preparation and cooking. Aga plans to go shopping on the first day so that everyone’s preferences can be considered (if  guests would like to join her, they are welcome)  The evening meals will mainly consist of dishes from Aga & Greg’s favourite Greek tavernas. Local cuisine, fresh fish, and seafood can be purchased at a relatively low cost of about 30€ per person, which includes wine.

Aga and Greg have spent many years exploring this region of Greece, and they believe that to experience authentic Greece truly, guests should have the opportunity to dine in Greek tavernas. If spending a night on a remote anchorage is a priority, dinner will be prepared communally aboard.

Sleeping and Relaxation

Zorba Cat is a custom-built charter catamaran, so all her communal spaces and cabins have been well-considered and are generously proportioned.

There are two primary dining areas on the yacht – one in the spacious open saloon and the other on the stern of the deck, where you can enjoy alfresco dining under a canopy cover. You’ll find numerous spots to read a book or soak up the sun, both on the decks and across the bow nets (both areas are fully cushioned). The dropped transoms are perfect for easy access in and out of the water with swim ladders and fresh water hose showers.

Zorba Cat has two master ensuite cabins and two forward double ensuite cabins.

The Master cabins are at the rear and on either side of the catamaran with oversized standard double beds and plenty of storage and hanging space. In one of the cabins, the bed can be split into two single beds. The ensuite is a modern push-button flush toilet with a wet room-style shower.

On each bow of the boat, there is a double ensuite cabin complete with a double bed. The ensuite is a modern push-button flush toilet with a wet room-style shower.

The price also reflects the half-board nature of this holiday, as explained in Zorba Cat’s life on board section . Breakfast and lunch are included, but you will dine out in traditional tavernas for your evening meals. This is at the guest’s expense, but you’ll find a delicious local spread for as little as 30€ per person – including the wine! There is also board cash of €3000 per charter payable upon arrival that covers fuel, marina fees, water and air-conditioning. This is reflected in the ticket price advertised and is based purely on the economics of Greece, which is still such a cash-based society.

Zorba Cat has lots of space for possessions but please be considerate and travel with rigid cases, only in soft bags or wheelie cases that are only hard on one side.

We recommend a travelling light principal with lots of lightweight, easy-drying layers. Below is a list of recommended items, these are not mandatory and those that have sailed before may have their preferences!

• Light shoes/trainers (with good grip)
• Flip flips, sandals OR Crocs
• Swimsuits and a swim towel
• Wash towel – micro fibres are great for lightweight and quick-drying

It can be quite a few degrees colder out at sea so please bring layers in the spring and autumn even if the forecast seems like a warm week!

ZorbaCat is sometimes at anchor so you'll need to be comfortable climbing in and out of the tender dinghy. She has dropped transoms with steps and swim ladder so getting on/off the boat is fairly easy. When she's docked, there's a simple gangplank.

No experience needed to join this boat.

Some snorkel gear, 2 x SUPs and 1 x Kayaks, water-ski and inflatables. (Please note, prior experience of water-skiing is needed)

Catamarans are generally very stable so it is rare that guests get seasick. Everyone reacts differently, but we recommend ginger tea or ginger biscuits and peppermints on board. It will pass in 24 hours.

Please check with the office for under 4, but we do require a 1:1 ratio with children. There is no limit for private charters but we recommend that children can swim. No maximum age limit exists as long as guests are fit and mobile.

GETTING THERE

Aegina, saronic islands, greece.

Flights go direct to Athens International Airport from London Standsted with Ryanair, and London Gatwick with Wizz Air, British Airways and easyJet. You’ll then need to take a taxi from the airport to Piraeus port and take a ferry to Aegina port, which takes about 40 minutes to 1 hour.

There are many different ferry options which run throughout the day, please use Ferry Scanner t o find timetables. We recommend guests to pre-book tickets ( this will still require picking up a physical ticket from the kiosk on the front ) as peak times can be busy.

( The Flying Dolphin and/or Hellenic offer a faster transfer than the larger Blue Star Ferry . )

Zorba’s crew can assist you in arranging an airport/hotel transfer to take you to the Pireaus (this is not included in the ticket price but they have a good local contact) Please contact Aga the week before your voyage if you need this service.

Depending on berth availability, Zorba Cat will either be in Aegina port (a 2-minute walk from the ferry) or Perdika (just along the coast). If the boat is in Perdika, Aga will arrange for a taxi (€15pp) to pick you up at Aegina port and take you to Perdika.
