Kenshō wins Motor Yacht of the Year at the World Superyacht Awards

Kenshō wins Motor Yacht of the Year at the World Superyacht Awards

The 75-metre Admiral superyacht Kenshō has been named Motor Yacht of the Year at the World Superyacht Awards.

A secret ballot by the independent panel of judges revealed the flagship of the Italian Sea Group as the winner by a healthy margin, chosen from among the eight individual winners of the Semi-Displacement and Displacement Motor Yacht classes.

Kenshō –  a Japanese word meaning “seeing one’s true nature” – took six years to create from 2016 when the initial foundations were laid through to her delivery and debut at the Monaco Yacht Show in 2022. Her flowing lines and green-blue metallic paint inspired by a Ford Mustang colour from the 1960s are eye-catching, but it was her owner-driven attributes that tipped the scales for the judges.

The owner visited around 100 of the world's landmark yachts to draw up a list of what he wanted in the vessel: high deckheads and minimal side decks; efficient interaction between crew and guests; large, calming volumes; and no main saloon. Designers at Netherlands-based   Azure Yacht Design and Naval Architecture and Germany-based archineers.berlin developed the naval architecture and exterior design.

Nature is a theme that is seen continuously throughout Kenshō . Her exterior is said to represent the curves of a pebble shaped by the forces of nature over time, while the stairs of the pool deck have been designed to look like they were carved out by the sea. The same feeling is captured inside too thanks to Parisian design studio Jouin Manku , who created a palette of soft natural tones in leather, teak, metal and glass  – it was the studio's first yachting project.

Kenshō ’s diesel-electric propulsion system with twin Veth azimuth drives, driven by Danfoss electric motors, draw their exact power needs from five variable-speed generators to help minimise her footprint.

This is not the first piece of silverware the vessel has collected since her launch. She was awarded a Neptune at the 2023 BOAT International Design & Innovation Awards for Best Interior Design in the Motor Yachts 500GT and Above category.

Kenshō flows. Maximum expression of the intuition of her Owner who directly oversaw the project in every detail. Kenshō redefines the boundaries of space, distribution and luxury on superyachts, the emblem of something new, personal and revolutionary. M/Y Kenshō has an innovative “diesel-electric” propulsion system, which has given it the “ECO” notation of the Classification Body. Kenshō integrates the best ideas of residential design and marine design to create a new quality of life at sea.

Kenshō was born from the hand of the Owner who drew in a pencil sketch consisting of 12 lines, in the winter of 2016, the symbolic and concrete union of form and function. The Owner’s intuition has also been able to unite a strong team made up of naval architects and designers AZURE (Netherlands) and the design studio archineers.berlin (Germany) constantly followed in the technical part by Technical Marine UK and Trappmann Consulting, who have been able to transform that which was a simple design in a variety of generous outdoor spaces, and unique features.

Forget about the traditional layouts, Kenshō has state-of-the-art features such as a single crew corridor and gangways only on upper deck – optimizing the volume for luxury guest areas. Full height glass where possible and lowered bulwarks are the ingredients for mesmerizing outboard views like a sailing yacht’s experience. All outside decks with their own specific functionalities making Kenshō’s platform complete and efficient. Spaces are large, high-class and comfortable. Azure Yacht Design and archineers.berlin redefined what used to be called impossible, fusing aesthetics and technical feasibility. Together they designed an exciting exterior schema that pushes at the edges. The elegant and soft exterior lines embrace all the purest forms of functionality. No exterior item has been compromised to make room for the technical outfitting of the yacht. Her unparalleled organic shapes seem to come from an unexplored underwater world.

With their experience and the youthful enthusiasm of fresh eyed newcomers, Patrick Jouin and Sanjit Manku (Agence Jouin Manku) approached the design of KENSHŌ’s interiors by posing some fundamental questions that challenge naval tradition. KENSHŌ synthesises superior solutions from residential and naval architecture to trace new lines for quality living at sea. Generous high ceilings, panoramic views, intelligent and modular configurations that adapt to enhance space, intimacy and comfort. The lighting, curated by “ Voyons Voir - Lighting Design ”, recreates a soft environment recalling the lighthouse that gave hope to the navigators of the past were at sea. Noble materials are artfully transformed into rounded and organic forms. Teak, marble, onyx, silk, wool, bronze and glass - a diverse material palette deployed in a deeply personal and poetic expression of design. Boat of the Week: Inside a Rule-Breaking 246-Foot Superyacht That Bucks Traditional Design

Admiral Yachts' Kenshō 246-foot superyacht

Superyacht design is far from formulaic, but there are guiding principles that most boats follow. Typically, the captain’s bridge, which needs clear visibility, is on the upper deck forward, while the bulky, heavy engines are found aft in the lower deck.

Sitting pretty at anchor just outside of Port Hercules during the Monaco Yacht Show, the 246-footer was the talk of the event, not least because its reflective turquoise-hull and matching tender penned by Azure Yacht Design and Archineers.Berlin seamlessly blend in with the ocean. The name Kenshō is a Japanese expression for being at one with nature, and the owner’s love of Asia is clear throughout the yacht.

Stepping on to Kenshō from the stern, the first major difference is obvious. Five of a total of eight guest suites (which accommodate 12 owners and their guests as well as four of the owner’s staff) feed off a long corridor beside the lower deck beach club—where the engines and water toys are usually located. The design team created a “tank” deck below this one to house the engines and moved the tender garage to the front of the boat. This layout gives guests direct access to the outdoors with views of the glass-encased sea-level pool and the surrounding water. Two additional twin cabins for the owner’s staff are also on the lower deck, as is the gym. Two VIP-sized staterooms are located on the main deck above.

Other owner-specified differentiators include loft-like ceiling heights in all guest areas, and the guest cabins feature open-plan layouts where the bathrooms are on display. A sliding door provides extra privacy when needed.

246-foot Admiral Yachts Kensho master suite

Co-founder Sanjit Manku ditched traditional yachting layouts for high-volume spaces and vast sea views. “While the owner likes boats, he has always been disappointed with what he found,” Manku told Robb Report . “He believed that there are things we could do that haven’t been done before.”

246

The biggest change is the relocation of the bridge to the main deck forward, which allows the owner’s main salon—more akin to an observation lounge—to live on the upper deck forward where the captains’ wheelhouse would usually be. Dramatic full-height windows and motorized sofas that rotate to face the sea, point to the horizon. The carpet and ceiling mimic the contours found on nautical maps.

“The owner questioned why the captain has the best view on board,” said Manku. “He said, ‘I don’t want to always be facing backwards. I want to see where I’m going.’”

The owner’s vast, upper-deck suite, comprised of four interconnecting rooms, contains silk-embroidered panels in the dressing room, shoji-style Japanese partition doors in the private living room and a bath sculpted from a single block of Carrara marble. Throughout the yacht, luminescent jellyfish and abalone ceilings nod to an Asian-spiced marine exhibition. “We let nature have a voice in the design,” said Manku.

New 246-foot Admiral Yachts Kensho superyacht

The interior spaces are airy, light and curvaceous. Pops of color and hand-painted scenes bring even the day heads to life. The dining room has display cabinets to be filled with artifacts from the owner’s travels. Two tables slide together to seat larger groups. At the center of each table, cast-glass lighting adds a new dimension at night.

The interior drills down on custom details, from the bronze and leather door handles and bespoke smart lighting to the interior doors that slide at the push of an abalone button. The design is characterized by wide walkways and outdoor living, with al fresco dining and lounging available on every level.

246-foot Admiral Yachts Kensho superyacht office

On the sun deck, crowned by a skylight, a glass-fronted Jacuzzi and island bar bring on the sociability. Glass windbreak doors shut off the sea breeze, making it a space to enjoy in just about any weather.

But what the boat’s unusual layout gains in creativity, it lacks in comprehensive flow of movement. Quick service from the galley is compromised by a labyrinth of stairs and corridors, while accessing the bow from the interior requires serious detective skills.

What Kenshō does bring, though, is a new take on an old design formula—a trend that is happening more often these days.

Admiral Yachts' impressive 75m (246ft) superyacht KENSHÕ is showing off her sleek silhouette and beautiful Zen-calm interiors to full effect in the new promotional video recently dropped by the flagship yard’s company The Italian Sea Group.

Delivered to her owner in July 2022, superyacht KENSHÕ made a star appearance at this year's  Monaco Yacht Show where her striking reverse bow and eye-catching metallic hull was on display whilst on anchor just off the coast of Monaco , wowing lucky show-goers able to step aboard during the prestigious event.

Prior to delivery, it was also announced she would be available for private yacht charters , and marked her debut onto the fleet around the celebrated destinations of the Mediterranean this summer.

Built around the owner’s love of the ocean, the motor yacht ’s spacious decks and zen-calm Asian-inspired interiors with lofty ceilings and full-length windows have been meticulously designed to harmoniously connect to her surroundings.

Standout features include a swim deck level featuring a 6-meter glass-fronted swimming pool, with steps leading to a waterside beach club and swim platform for easy access to the sea and onto the yacht’s water toys, including the ever-popular electric foiling boards and raft of inflatables.

Relaxation and entertainment opportunities continue up on her sundeck, featuring an additional glass-fronted pool, convenient island bar and shaded areas that can be closed off to the elements or left open for a welcome breeze.

6 Architects That Are Now Creating Designs for Superyachts

Exciting yacht design doesn’t require reinventing the wheel. But a fresh view always helps. That’s why more yacht owners are looking for land-based architects and designers for their new build and refit interiors, preferring a cross-pollination of ideas over the tried and true.

The first owner to shy away from the traditional yacht designer set was billionaire Lukas Lundin, who tasked Italian architect Cristina Gherardi Benardeau to design the interior of the 274-foot Savannah. The Feadship, launched in 2015, is largely remembered as the first superyacht with a hybrid propulsion package. But the interior is just as radical.

Benardeau, a designer of retail space for Giorgio Armani and Christian Dior Couture, gave the 262-foot yacht the world’s first “Nemo lounge,” or a bubble in the hull where the owners and guests could see underwater.  It also featured what looked like a floating superstructure, employing long strips of tinted glass inspired by skyscrapers. (The same visual trick was employed later in Oceanco’s 361-foot Jubilee.) Savannah was the first boat to receive full metallic exterior paint job to blend in with the ocean surroundings—an idea later seen on superyacht Kensho, when it delivered in 2022.

Since then, a number of owners and boatbuilders have employed residential architects to do interior designs, as well as offer exterior flourishes (though naval architects complete the structures and running surfaces.) Rome architect Achille Salvagni has done projects for Rossinavi and Azimut, Lord Norman Foster created a series that later became the YachtPlus fleet, Lazzarini & Pickering designed the Benetti Motopanfilo 37M, and next year, Matteo Thun & Antonio Rodriguez will show their talents on Azimut’s SeaDeck Series.

Even residential stalwarts like Zaha Hadid Architects can’t help but experiment with nautical projects. Following the 2016 reveal of the firm’s Unique Circle Yachts series, the studio collaborated with Vitruvius Yachts this year on Britain’s new “royal yacht” project. And more recently, the architects unveiled concept renderings for Oneiric, a proposed catamaran in collaboration with Italian shipyard Rossinavi.

From skyscraper to sea, here are six yachts designed by mainstream architects.

<p>Architect Roberto Palomba has been designing houses for decades. His Milan-based studio, Palomba Serafini Associati, includes the Italian Consulate in Detroit, home décor and even tableware, among its past projects. His first yacht is the <a href="https://robbreport.com/motors/marine/amer-41-explorer-superyacht-cool-innovations-1234794265/">Amer</a> F100, which features a unique “Glass Cabin” as the main salon. It was designed in partnership with Ludovica Serafini. “My aim was to change some standard boat elements to create something completely different,” Palomba told <em>Robb Report</em> during the yacht’s world debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival. “Certainly, our perspective offers a fresh look, an architectural vision rooted in the world of architecture and interior design, translated into the realm of yacht design.” The Glass Cabin is an architectural glass box that encases the main salon and formal dining area with windows that are larger than other yachts with similar dimensions. The garden creates openness, light and a continuous connection with the sea. Continuing the theme, reflective surfaces are used on the walls and ceiling across all social areas to bring more light in, while stairs joining the main deck to the bridge are topped by more glass, opening the heart of the yacht to blue skies.</p>

<p><a href="https://robbreport.com/motors/marine/admiral-yachts-246-foot-kensho-new-design-features-1234763352/"><em>Kensho</em></a>‘s owner was a first-time yacht buyer who wanted a one-of-a-kind vessel. He looked beyond the pool of yachting talent for a designer who could create a signature statement inside the 246-foot Admiral. The owner eventually decided on Paris design house Jouin Manku, an experienced architecture and industrial design studio, without a single yacht to its name. Co-founder Sanjit Manku took the design brief and ran with it, eschewing traditional yachting layouts for high-volume and big sea views. Variations on the established interiors include lofty 8.9-foot-tall ceilings, open-plan cabin layouts (where the bathrooms are on display) and locating the owner’s salon—more akin to an observation lounge—to the upper deck where the captains’ wheelhouse is traditionally located.  “We drew on our restaurant design experience to create an ambience and furniture that is practical yet opulent,” Manku told <em>Robb Report</em>. “The dining chairs have ski feet that make it easy for guests to slide in and out, and we incorporated flattering lighting rather than ceiling spotlights.” The end result is a stunning, personalized interior that is unique in yachting. </p>

<p>Refits are also getting design overhauls by non-yacht designers. Lürssen’s 318-foot <a href="https://robbreport.com/motors/marine/superyacht-carinthia-vii-refit-lurssen-1235333612/"><em>Carinthia VII</em></a>, first delivered in 2002 and designed by Tim Heywood, was sold in 2022 to a new owner. He called on Italian studio Bizzozero Cassina Architects for what turned out to be a major refit in a nearly record 300 days. The architectural studio is experienced in real estate, including a few of the owner’s private properties. But yacht refits are a recent addition to its portfolio. “The key to any project’s success is to know the person, their lifestyle and the way they think,” architect Paolo Bizzozero said. “Only with these three ingredients can you remedy a truly bespoke environment that works for them and for their life.” Key additions include a 1,334-sq. ft. sundeck, with a large dining table and teppanyaki grill. Equally impressive was the 39-foot-long glass-paneled swimming pool on the main deck (with two large televisions to view live sports), and a 968-sq. ft. air-conditioned gym on the bridge deck that also serves as a winter garden.</p>

Bespoke one-offs include a bar and vanity unit, the captain’s chair and “Egg” table, and a sofa which was hand-built at Bentley’s engineering facility and finished in its signature trim. The brand’s iconic diamond-quilted hides were also included across entire yacht interior. $1 million, 80-foot luxury Sunseeker Atlantis yacht sinks off Florida coast. Photos, what we know

kensho superyacht owner

Two people were rescued off the Florida coast Saturday when an 80-foot luxury sports yacht began sinking according to a release from the U.S. Coast Guard in Jacksonville.

Unlike other recent incidents in other parts of the world, no orcas were involved in this yacht going down. The operator reported that the boat hit something in the water.

At 11:37 a.m. the operator of the yacht radioed that they were taking on water three miles off the coast of St. Augustine Beach. Multiple agencies responded, the Coast Guard said.

When marine units from St. Johns Sheriff's Office and St. Augustine Police Department arrived, the boat was already partially submerged. Two people were safely removed.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our partner agencies for their invaluable assistance during this case," said U.S. Coast Guard Senior Chief Petty Officer Ricardo Santacana. “With the weather improving and mariners heading out onto the water, it's imperative for everyone to verify the presence of all necessary safety equipment aboard their vessel. This ensures that responders, as demonstrated in this case, can swiftly locate you and render assistance when an emergency arises.”

Here's what we know.

Why did the Sunseeker Atlantis yacht sink off the coast of Florida?

According to the operator of the boat, it struck something.

St. Johns County Fire Rescue reported it was a dredge pipe piling and a photo of the piling shows a bent sign.

Was anyone hurt when the Sunseeker Atlantis yacht sank?

One person suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital in stable condition, St. Johns County Fire Rescue said in a Facebook post .

What kind of yacht sank off the St. Augustine Beach coast?

The boat appears to be a Sunseeker Atlantis , built in the United Kingdom and delivered in 1999, according to Boat International.

The motor yacht is one of 21 Predator 80 models. It has two Caterpillar diesel engines, a top speed of 45 knots and a cruising speed of 40 knots, with room for up to six guests in three staterooms, plus two crewmembers.

The yacht was designed by naval architect Don Shead, with interiors from designer Ken Freivokh, Boat International said. Similar Sunseeker Predator 80 yachts have been listed for around $1 million.

Miami Yacht Owner Denied Insurance Payout for Fire Loss

By Olivia Alafriz

The owner of a yacht that burned in a fire will have to eat the loss because his insurance policy was based on an inaccurate valuation of the boat and thus void, a federal judge ruled.

Diego LePage owned the boat via Musashi AZ LLC, of which he was the sole member, and the boat was the sole asset. Accelerant Specialty Insurance Co. issued a marine insurance policy to LePage based on information provided by the previous insurer, which described the purchasing price as $2 million.

LePage actually bought the yacht for $1,575,000, making it overinsured without Accelerant’s knowledge and ...
