Cowes Week 2024 27th July – 2nd August 2024

Cowes Week is returning to the Isle of Wight, so don’t miss your chance to catch all the action from the edge of the racetrack. Solent Superyacht Charters can provide luxury travel and on-the-water spectating, as well as week-long accommodation for up to 8 guests.

To find out more about our services or to discuss your requirements, get in touch and call our friendly team today on  +44 (0)7836 204105 .

Thrilling On-The-Water Racing Since 1826

As one of the longest running events of the social season, the world-renowned Cowes Week is an institution for sailors and sailing fans the world over. Up to a thousand boats take part in this historic regatta, with 40 exciting races held every day of the week.

Amateurs, professionals and world champions alike compete for glory – and even if you don’t have a boat, you can still get in on the racing action by joining an existing crew. Offer your abilities on the crew forums or keep an eye out on social media for other sailors in need.

If you prefer to be spectating rather than competing, Cowes Week still has plenty to offer. As well as thrilling races from a wide variety of boat classes, there’s also sailing talks, music performances, cocktail parties, afternoon tea and perhaps a celebrity appearance or two.

Luxury Travel to Cowes Week

Make a glamorous entry to the Cowes Week regatta with motor yacht charter services from Solent Superyacht Charters. Our experienced crew can pick you up from any location on the South Coast and take you directly to the event, allowing you to relax with a glass of champagne and watch the waves go by.

You can even watch the races from the water, and if you fancy staying for the whole week, accommodation can be provided for you (either at one of the island’s top hotels, or on board the boat with its 4 luxury ensuite cabins).

Racing Yacht Charter

The eight day racing programme starts on Saturday 27 th July and finishes on Friday 2 nd  August 2024. Usually there is one race per day typically lasting between 2.5 – 4.5 hours, depending on the tide, weather conditions and course set by the race officers from the Royal Yacht Squadron.

Sail GP

Novices or experts alike

The yacht you charter is crewed with a minimum of a skipper and mate, thus enabling a complement of complete novices to take full part in the racing. More typically, crews have a mixed range of experience and we are used to accommodating all skill levels. No experience... no problem!

One day or several

Many of our clients take part in a single day's racing whilst others will book consecutive days and then host their own clients racing with a different crew of guests each day.

Race prepared boats

We have a range of top class race prepared boats available and will find the best fit for your crew, objectives and budget. Whether you’re just looking to take part or are after a racing machine for a podium position, we take care of all the details. The precise sail wardrobe and use of spinnakers will be at the skipper's discretion according to conditions and crew experience.

The social side

If staying overnight to soak up the social side, let us find accommodation and book the best social events. Inevitably many venues are ticket only and this is where our expert local knowledge comes in.

Book early!

The key pointer for Cowes Week is to book early!! With nearly 190 years of history and well publicised dates, those in the know book early and enjoy the widest choice.

Our skipper - Colm - was also incredibly professional, friendly and experienced. A really great and excellent experience overall! We will definitely book again.

Our skipper and first mate were fantastic. We were on the spectator boat and we had the right amount of learning without it being too overwhelming as we all had little to no experience.

Charter in Cowes

Sitting on the entrance to the river Medina, Cowes has a long sailing and boating history. Indeed it can almost lay claim to being the birthplace of yacht racing. These days a visit to Cowes during your Solent boat charter is pretty much essential.

If you speak to any yacht crew throughout the world the chances are they have visited Cowes at least once and will have fond memories. It holds a prime location in the Solent sitting pretty much central and is passed by all the shipping as it enters or leaves Southampton. This of course includes the many cruise ships which visit the London cruise terminal Southampton.

Split in two by the river Medina West Cowes is where the action is to be found. During Cowes week the area around the town quay and Cowes Yacht haven is transformed into party central with bars, live bands, stalls and of course the huge beer marquee where tales of racing prowess and near misses carry on into the small hours. Around 1,000 boats and 10,000 crew take part in Cowes week annually. The round the Island race is another fixture which participants of all shape and size eagerly await.

For the rest of the year the town plays host to a myriad of old English pubs and great restaurants, many of which are legendary in boating circles. We can help you as much or as little as you wish in selecting where to eat, drink or generally relax. There is a range of predominantly boating based shops selling clothes, household items and specialist foodstuffs.

Cowes is also home to powerboat racing with the Cowes Torquay Cowes powerboat race held each year in August. This 165 nautical mile epic departs from the Solent and runs along Dorset’s Jurassic coastline passing Portland Bill, crossing Lyme Bay before turning round and heading back for home. The sea is not always glassy over the course once the protection of the Solent has been forfeited so it really is a race which sorts the men from the boys and the ladies from the girls. In the history of the race boats such as the mighty Cinzano have attained legendary status but there are a number of worthy challenges mounted by teams such as Powerboat Asia.

East Cowes is home to Osborne House created by Queen Victoria and a place she referred to as being impossible to imagine a prettier spot. It was here that she finally passed away in 1901. Today visitors can explore not only a magnificent royal summer palace from the mid to late 18th century but also the stunning gardens. Prince Albert was a keen horticulturalist.

Further upstream from Cowes is the Folly Inn. Anyone who has been boating on the Solent has, at some time, visited the Folly Inn for lunch or an evening meal. At weekends it has been known to get a little lively there and the tables aren’t always used solely for eating!

So whether you want to wander the narrow streets, walk along the Solent promenade, enjoy fine food, experience a traditional English pub or just have a little retail therapy, Cowes is an excellent stop off during your private charter with us.

TESTIMONIAL - WHAT DO THE SALAMANDER SAILING ADVENTURE GUESTS SAY ?

"A wonderful day out with great hosts!"

"I went out on a day-cruise on the Salamander to watch the J-class boats. We had a wonderful day. The Salamander is roomy and comfortable (even when the weather is not cooperating too much.) The boat is beautifully laid out and exceptionally well-maintained - and for a lubber like me it felt very stable and sturdy.

Chris and Sue are perfect hosts - gracious, funny, invariably cheerful and helpful without being intrusive. Ask them about their round-the-world sailing adventures though - fascinating stories.

I would highly recommend Chris and Sue and the Salamander for any adventure they put their minds to."

Cowes Week Client

I felt like a rock star! I only realised I wasn't when I had a few drinks and realised I wasn't! Thank you for all your organisation, expertise and advice. It was very clear from our enquiry we had the best event company looking after our event at Cowes week. Our clients have been talking about our day and asking for the same boat and same format for next year. We will be back again.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if its raining on the day.

We will still head out on the water if it is raining. There is plenty of space inside the boat to get comfortable and still enjoy the day. The only reason we would cancel / postpone is if the wind is too high and therefore deemed unsafe

Can we take more than 12 guests on board?

Sadly not. The boat has a marine coastguard agency license to charter and is only up to 12 guests. You can however book a RIB alongside or another boat to take larger groups.

Do you have other similar sized boats?

Yes. We have a few other large boats subject to different costs. We recommend  booking early if you require more than one boat.

Can we book for the whole week?

Yes absolutely. Booking a week of consecutive days is a great way to entertain more guests at Cowes week.

WHAT CLIENTS SAY

This is truly a 5 * service. The team really looked after us both ashore on arrival and also while at sea. We were a relatively inexperienced crew but always felt the team ashore had our backs. Thoroughly recommended.

I just wanted to say Thank-you very much for the weekend charter. It was exactly what we were after (albeit cold!) plus Andy was an awesome teacher and great company. We’ll definitely be keen to book again soon!

We had a fabulous four days. Marina is ideally placed for the Solent, boat was in great condition, well equipped and a joy to sail. We were well briefed and the shore side team including the dog very friendly.

We charted one of the sailing yachts for a fantastic weekend cruise in the Solent. The boat was in superb condition and well equipped, the staff was very helpful explaining how things work on the yacht and there was also a video available with all the important information. 10/10 would recommend!

Had a fantastic week chartering Blue Otter, Alex was incredibly helpful and sent loads of information and date checking prior to booking. There was a handover video and both the handover and return were really smooth. The boat was lovely and well maintained and Lee was really helpful in recommending places to visit (and helping identify the steering issue as an autopilot takeover - doh!). Definitely will be back and would fully recommend!

Just back from a lovely week in the Solent. Great service from HPYC from first inquiry through to return handover. Very straightforward to deal with, and the yacht was in excellent condition. We've chartered from many companies in the UK and abroad and the attention to detail (and flawless inventory!) was second to none. Everything about the yacht and equipment had clearly been well looked after and was in immaculate condition. Great service, will use again.

Always very friendly service, and well-maintained yachts. Easy check-in and checkout. Will be back...

We had a great time and were very happy with everything. Your team were genuinely friendly and were very helpful when we needed it. Is a big contrast to many charter companies I have dealt with in the past.

Watching the sun go down with a glass of bubbly on the deck of a sparkling yacht was unbelievable. What a treat, and a much needed change of scenery in these troubled times. We will be back for sure

Fab service, nothing too much trouble, including my daft questions. I'll be a repeat customer for sure!

We had a great time sailing with Lee for a few days at the beginning of September. Hamble Point Yacht Charters supplied us an impeccable 45 ft Hanse yacht, which was handled with complete mastery by Captain Lee.It was a privilege to sail with Lee, who is clearly a highly skilled professional taking great pride in his work ... but who is also a fantastic character with a great sense of humour and plenty of fun stories to keep the whole family entertained. He balances the serious side of safety and learning about sailing with a whopping dose of amusement and good cheer. We sailed the Solent in some decent seas, visited Bucklers Hard on the banks of the Beaulieu River and learned lots about British nautical history. Our boys started somewhat of a fishing trend catching bass off the back of the boat in Portsmouth and we would love to sail with Lee again in the future. The man truly knows his stuff, maintained the boat impeccably and went to every effort to ensure that we had a great time. Many thanks to “Shippers” and Hamble Point Charters. We’ll be back.

Chartered bareboats with HPYC on numerous occasions most recently in Sept 2020. Always helpful and accommodating. Highly recommend.

We had a fantastic weekend sailing on Loxley B. Boat in super condition and spotlessly clean, Alex. and the team very thorough and always on hand to answer any questions. A great experience. We will be back. Thank you!

Lots of information from office with a friendly service. We selected a one of the cheaper yachts and was please with find everything work and was cleaned and tidy. We will definitely be back

This was the first time we had tried chartering and as experienced racing sailors we didn't know what to expect. Covid has closed down all our events this year so this was a chance to get afloat at least once in 2020. What a great experience and Alex and all the Hamble staff could not have been more friendly or helpful. We had a great three days and we will be back !! We would have no hesitation is recommending Hamble Point Yacht Charters.

About the Cowes Week Regatta | Chartering a Yacht for Cowes Week | Crewing Aboard a Racing Yacht  |

About Cowes Week

regatta,sailboat race,cowes,sailing event

Cowes, located in the Solent area of the South of England , has long been considered the home of sailing and international yacht racing. Since its creation in 1826, the Cowes Week Regatta now boasts a more than 1000 yachts and 8500 competitors racing every day for 8 days. It is the longest running and largest sailing regatta in the world.

This tradition of being held in the first week of August has continued annually to the present day, with the exception of during the two World Wars.

The event sees a racing fleet of around 1000 yachts competing together with thousands of professional and amateur sailors hailing from all over the world. Olympic sailors, corporate groups, family crew, yachting enthusiasts - anyone who loves being on the sea alongside (or preferably in front of) fellow sailing enthusiasts!

Skandia Cowes Week has customarily attracted the rich and famous, including members of the Royal Family, as well as a wider audience, perhaps due to the fact that it ties in so perfectly with the quintessentially English summer social schedule.

The regatta incorporates an extensive social programme organized by the various clubs and committees associated with the racing. So there is something for everyone – hardcore race sailors, convivial yachties, and those seeking to enjoy the party atmosphere and carnival spirit ashore – great cafés, cocktail parties, yachting balls, top class restaurants, and the world-renowned Cowes beer tent which has up to 4000 revellers a day enjoying the festival!

Chartering a Bareboat to Race (With or Without Skipper and First Mate)

The boats that we offer are First 40's that have been modified so that they are suitable for racing. There is the option of chartering your First 40's as a bareboat, for which you are required to have over 1,000 nautical miles of skipper experience in tidal waters - your first mate is required to have the same experience on the water.

If you race competitively but have little experience as a skipper, we would recommend hiring a skipper to assist and give you top tips throughout the week. There is also the option of chartering as a skippered race, which allows you to still be part of the crew but takes away the risks often involved with racing.

Take a Day Sail at Cowes Week

If you want to be part of the crew, we can place you on a competitive racing boat for the day, so you can be in the thick of the action. This also means you will be involved in the evening activities which are some of the most well-regarded in the UK.

Chartering a Yacht to Race In Cowes Week

Cowes week is one of the world's best sailing spectacles. If you're not a sailor, no problem, the Cowes Week provides the perfect setting for an Event, Corporate Entertainment or just to be a spectator and enjoy the atmosphere.

If you would like to charter a motor, sail or even a RIB to see the races up close and enjoy the festivities, feel free to contact us . We have many boats available of all sizes and can find the right one for your needs. Click here to see a selection of our Solent Charter Yachts .

AAM Cowes Week

Cowes Week Sailing Regatta

Cowes regatta has a long, proud and glorious history, which continues to this day. It has taken part every year since 1826 (with the exception of the two World Wars and 2020 due to Coronavirus).

cowes week yacht charter

It started as a single race and a £100 prize (the equivalent of around £10,000 in today’s money) which was raced for by seven boats from the Royal Yacht Squadron. The race attracted the eye of a young Prince George , who was an avid sailor himself, and he presented a Gold Cup to the winner of the race (in addition to the prize money). There are no records of who won the first race, but it is safe to say that the whole sailing community won, because a sailing institution was born.

The number of races continued to grow, and by the 1900’s the celebration of sailing lasted for three or four days, and attracted royalty from around the world – including the British Queen Victoria and King George – as well as top class and Olympic sailors – as well as amateur sailors who enjoy pitting their wits against the very best.

In addition to the main race, other Cowes sailing clubs stared to run races around the same dates, or a couple of days before or after, the official Royal Yacht Squadron – and so the event began to grow. It all got a bit complex as there were as many as seven different competing race organisers , each with their own start and finish lines, their own racing rules, competing boats, and racing marks, so in 1964 the ‘Cowes Combined Clubs’ was formed as a single entity to manage and co-ordinate ALL of the races, which led to the event becoming an 8-day celebration of sailing.

cowes week yacht charter

For sailors, part of the romance of Cowes week is that it continues to attract a very wide range of competitors – including famous yachtsmen from around the world – and because it has very diverse set of races: there are races for over 40 categories of boats, from old wooden boats to ultra-modern foiling catamarans.

For non-sailors, there is a wonderful shore-side festival atmosphere , with lots of land-based entertainment and events to keep over 100,000 spectators entertained (when they’re not watching the racing). There’s also ‘spectator boats’ out on the water which offer a prime spot for viewing the action.

Cowes is more than just a sailing regatta . People come here year on year, and it is often the first date that people note in their diaries. There is always a fire-work display on the second Friday to round off the week, and in odd-numbered years, there is also the infamous biennial Fastnet race which also starts from Cowes and takes place on the Sunday after Cowes week.

Press release

Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week Daily Round Up Day 8 By Rupert Holmes / CWL

Newsflash header image

High pressure, brilliant sun and a solid westerly breeze again delivered perfect conditions for the final day of Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week. The wind dipped briefly in strength to around 10 knots as a belt of thin cloud moved across the Solent around midday, before increasing to 15 knots with stronger gusts when the sun returned 30 minutes later.

The bulk of the White Group dayboat classes completed their series today. Nigel Grogan’s Rehydrated had already won the Squib class with a day to spare, counting seven points from six races, a performance that also saw him win White Group overall. Emma Baker’s Buccaneer won today’s race, lifting her up to sixth overall, while a second and fourth for Duncan Grindley’s Surprise and Martin Harrison’s Hussar cemented their overall second and third places respectively.

“I am absolutely delighted and feel really proud to be taking the trophy back to Burnham-On-Crouch,” Grogan said. “We had a bit of a shaky start to the week with an OCS on the first day, which put us under a bit of pressure, but from there on we sailed well and managed to gather a string of useful results. It was however, as always in the Squib class, exceptionally close racing throughout.”

The larger boats dominated the Sportsboat class results, with Malcolm Wootton’s Farr 30 Pegasus Dekmarx winning with a day to spare. A win in today’s race helped seal second overall for David and Kirsty Apthorp’s J/88 J-Dream. Lloyd Thornburg’s Farr 280 Fomo took third overall, four points behind J-Dream. Rob and Lucinda Mclean’s Spider Pig headed the smaller boats in Sportsboat Division 2, ahead of two other 1720s, Tom Richardson’s Premier Cru and Stephanie Merry’s Midnight Cowboy.

cowes week yacht charter

YETI, J/70 – Copyright Paul Wyeth / CWL

Jack Davies’ Yeti won today’s race for the J/70 class, winning both his class and the Under 25 trophy. Fourth place today was just enough for Ali Hall’s J Curve to retain second overall, one point ahead of Claire Lasko’s Elizabeth. David Atkinson’s Sweaty Betty won the SB20 class with two days to spare, with Robert Corbally and Joe and Tom Hemmant’s L.O.S taking second overall, ahead of Roger Harford’s Red Kite.

Nick Stagg’s China Wight led the Etchells fleet into the start line today, but lost out by having to slow down to avoid being OCS. The class started in such a tight bunch that China Wight was almost spat out the back of the fleet, while series leader Andrew Cooper’s Ice was a nose ahead of half a dozen other first-row boats. He also led at the finish, taking his second win of the week to win the class overall on 11 points. Shaun Frolich’s Exabyte 7 took second overall on 13 points and Rob Elliot’s Bon Vivant third on 15 points.

Only two points separated the top three boats in the Daring class going into their final race, with Giles Peckham’s Dauntless on 16 points and John Corby’s Doublet and Andrew Norton’s Decoy both tied on 18 points. O Laughton-Scott’s Darius looked best placed at the start of today’s race, with Kim, Laurence and Tristan Orchard’s Dancer inshore and Decoy at the outer end of the line also looking good. However, neither Peckham nor Corby were in the front row. The latter was one of the first boats to tack onto port, while Peckham continued on starboard for longer, gradually clawing his way up through the fleet.

Peckham notched up another win, his fifth of the regatta and with another discard kicking in was able to drop the 10th place he picked up on Wednesday to win the class counting only seven points. However, it was a bad day for Corby, who had to count his seventh place today, leaving him second overall on 15 points, one point ahead of Norton.

NAIAD, CHRISTIANNA, Dragon – Copyright Paul Wyeth / CWL

Jenny Stutley’s Chime led the Dragon fleet into the outer end of the line this morning, but had to hold back to avoid starting prematurely, handing an advantage to Martin Makey’s Ganador and Gavia Wilkinson-Cox’s Jerboa. Further inshore Eric Williams’ Ecstatic established a two-length lead on Oliver Morgan’s Christianna, however when they crossed tacks a few minutes after the start the offshore group was ahead. Simon Barter’s Bertie won today’s three-hour race – his first win of the week – nine seconds ahead of Martin ‘Stavros’ Payne’s Bear, with Graham Bailey’s Aimee third. Bailey again won the class overall, on 13 points, ahead of Payne and Wilkinson-Cox.

In the Sonar class David Peerless’ Pisces and Alistair Barter’s (Dragon sailor Simon’s son) Bertie established an early lead off the start line, with Barry Byham and Simon Clark’s Dolphin also getting away cleanly. Today provided a double win for the Barter family, with Alistair leading Dolphin at the finish by 36 seconds, while Peerless took third place. This left Bertie and Dolphin tied on 15 points, with the count back in Barter’s favour thanks to his four race wins.

Sam Jenkin’s Swallow Svala was the best placed boat at the outer end of their start, tacking immediately onto port, leaving Anthony Lunch’s Solitude and Charles Fisher, Richard Thompson and Nigel Glennie’s Migrant leading the starboard tack group away from the line. Migrant went on to win today’s race, his fourth of the regatta, which he finished counting eight points. John Houghton’s Avocet took secured second overall thanks to a second place in today’s race. Solitude and Malcolm Green’s Archon finished the series tied on 14 points, with the count back for third overall resolved in favour of Green thanks to his two race wins.

Jonathan Nainby-Luxmoore’s Redwing Snowgoose 2 started the day with a commanding points lead. However four boats were only two points apart in the race for second overall. Today the fleet was noticeably closer to the line than previously classes in the final 30 seconds before their start. The two boats at the outer end of the line were both OCS, including Snowgoose 2, leaving a tight group of boats, including Nick Rowton-Lee, Rory Morrison and Paul Lacy-Smith’s Banzai ll, Colin and Becky Samuelson’s Toucan, Nicholas Robertson and David McCue’s Musicus and Nick Woolgar and Olav Cole’s Goose, all in the first row. James Wilson’s Quail won today’s race, lifting him up to fifth overall, while third place for Banzai ll secured her position second overall, three points ahead of John Raymond and Christopher Hill’s Harlequin.

The Flying 15 class was again won by John and Rupert Mander’s Men Behaving Badly, who won with two days to spare and took the runner’s up spot in White Group overall. However, the day started with three boats in close competition for second place. Nick Clarke’s Black enjoyed a two point advantage on 16-year-old Will Heritage’s Freddie Flintoff, who in turn was one point ahead of Richard Drabble’s Fram Freyr.

With the wind increasing, Andrew Rutherford’s Double Trouble was early leading into the line, luffed above the outer distance mark, before ducking back to make a perfect start to windward of Black. Fram Freyr also had good speed off the line, popping out in third place right behind the two leaders. Heritage won today’s race, nine seconds ahead of Andrew Millband’s Fifty Fifty, with Black taking third 33 seconds later. Heritage therefore took second overall, three points ahead of Clarke.

In the Mermaid class William Edwards’ Annabelle started closest to the outer end of the line, a length ahead of Guy Mattinson’s Adastra before making an early tack offshore. Noel Dobbs’ Scuttle was also looking well placed, a length ahead of a larger group of mid-line boats. Dobbs was almost 30 seconds ahead of Mattison at the finish today, with Ben Few Brown’s Sheen in third place. Dobbs’ win today, his third of the week, sealed his third place overall, while Mattison wins the class, one point ahead of Few Brown.

LASS, XOD – Copyright Paul Wyeth / CWL

The final start of the day was for the XOD fleet. Series leader, John Tremlett’s Lass responded to the individual recall signal, eventually crossing behind the entire fleet, with the exception of a handful of back markers, on port tack. This left Simon Russell’s Swallow, Neil Payne’s Sirena, Roger Yeoman’s Xcitation and Rory Paton’s XL as the best placed boats, with Michael Martell’s Astralita and Nik Froud’s Venus also looking strong.

Lass worked back up the fleet remarkably quickly, keeping clear air in the big fleet as the fleet tacked past the throngs of spectators on the Green to the west of the Royal Yacht Squadron. At the end of today’s two-hour race Payne held a 12 second lead on James Meaning’s Gleam, with Swallow taking third place 36 seconds later. Lass was able to discard her seventh place to take another overall class win, while Xcitation similarly discarded a disappointing 23rd place to retain second overall. Meaning’s second in today’s race sealed his position in third overall.

Black Group

With the main series for Black Group yachts having concluded yesterday, today’s racing was for individual class trophies. James Gair’s Mills 39 Zero ll was victorious in IRC Class 1, while Jonathan Gardiner’s First 40 Minx 3 won IRC Class 2, and Frank Lang’s X-40 Optim’X IRC 3.

Oliver Legrain’s A35 IBA Sailing Team won IRC 4, while Rob Salter’s J/92 Jackdaw takes away the silverware in IRC 5. In IRC 6 Samantha Flint and Olly Love’s Impala 28 Too Frank took their second win of the week, while Paul Dunstan’s Folkboat Mandarin was victorious in IRC 7

In Cruiser Division A Rob Denning’s Swan 46 Bewick of Cowes led the fleet away from the start, with Phil Munday’s Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 52.2 Great Escape of Southampton a little to leeward. Munday took line honours at the end of the three-hour race, 30 seconds ahead of Denning, but was not able to save his time against the lower rated boat. Simon Grigg and Anne Jackson’s Arcona 370 Arcadian took third place on corrected time, less than two minutes behind Munday.

In Cruiser Division B Janet, Lionel and David Miller’s Swan 38 White Heather took both line honours and first place on corrected time, ahead of Jonathan and Pippa Wallis’ Swan 36 Sheeva and Keith Harding’s Sun Odyssey Reach 4 the Wind.
