The new BAVARIA C46: The new sailing yacht of 2023

published on 11 November 2022

With the new BAVARIA C46, BAVARIA YACHTS announce an impressive addition to their C‐LINE sailing yachts for 2023. With the BAVARIA C38 and C42 already delighting their customers today, BAVARIA YACHTS is presenting the next evolution. For the new BAVARIA C46, the C‐LINE concept has been further developed and re‐interpreted in all areas. For example, the characteristic features of the hull design with the typical BAVARIA V‐bow and chines, which not only give the BAVARIA C46 impressive sailing characteristics, but also create more light space and living comfort below deck in the saloon as well as the cabins. The BAVARIA C46 sets a new standard in its class and is a yacht that combines long‐standing BAVARIA strengths with new features, thus finding convincing solutions for many customers and requirements. BAVARIA YACHTS will present further details about the BAVARIA C46 early next year at boot 2023.

The BAVARIA C46 sets new standards in the combination of ample room, excellent sailing characteristics and innovative solutions. Like all C‐LINE models, the BAVARIA C46 was created in cooperation between the BAVARIA development team and Cossutti Yacht Design and offers a convincing combination for the most diverse requirements on board.

The BAVARIA C46 combines the typical generous BAVARIA space on board and the proven Made‐in‐Germany solidity with even more sailing performance and greater comfort on board. The distinctive chines at the stern and the BAVARIA V‐bow have already given the BAVARIA C38 and C42 exceptionally good and fast sailing characteristics.

Cossutti Yacht Design has again successfully applied this design philosophy to the 14.86 meters long and 4.70 meters wide hull of the BAVARIA C46. As a result, the BAVARIA C46 possesses agile steering, converts the wind even faster into boat speed and, at the same time, allows for maximally large cabins in the stern and foreship. Thus, space and sailing pleasure are a winning combination on the BAVARIA C46.

"After the presentation of the C38 and C42, which was also named the 2021 European Yacht of the Year, our customers have very clearly signaled to us that they look forward to a quick continuation of the concept. Therefore, we have put all our energy into the further development of the concept and are now in a position to present our customers the BAVARIA C46 with its convincing solutions,“ explains Marc Diening, CEO of BAVARIA YACHTS.

Whether relaxed and safe sailing with a small crew, single‐handed sailing or cruising with a large crew with sporting ambitions – the BAVARIA C46 offers all the necessary options for pure sailing pleasure with six optional winch positions, well over 100 square meters of sail area on the wind and optional Gennaker and Code 0.

From the very spacious cockpit, the sun loungers on the foredeck or after a relaxing time on the large bathing platform, you can quickly get into the water. Heavy but useful water sports equipment is always stored within reach in the BAVARIA B-BOX, so that the hours at anchor or in water can be enjoyed in a relaxed way by the entire crew.

Decades of experience on coastal and long‐distance cruises have shaped further smart options on board. Customers can choose from various layouts ranging from 3 to 5 cabins, including a 4‐cabin layout with 4 in‐suite heads or a 3‐cabin layout with an additional separate room at the companionway. This can be used, for example, as a storage and tool room or as a directly accessible locker for wet oilskins. A full navigation station is always on board with the BAVARIA C46.

„The requirements for a sailing yacht around 15 meters are much more versatile today and can no longer simply be divided into classic categories such as performance or family cruiser, charter or owner’s yacht. During the development of the BAVARIA C46, the focus was solely on what offers our customers real added value on board. And when looking for the right solution, detail by detail, we were able to disprove supposed necessary compromises in many places. With the BAVARIA C46, we have found the balance that customers expect from a sailing yacht of this size with many well‐thought‐out solutions,“ reports Marc Diening.

In the first half of 2023, the BAVARIA C46 will do her first test sails. Further details about the BAVARIA C46 will be presented at boot 2023 in Duesseldorf from January 21 to 29.

Sailing the Bavaria 46 Cruiser: elegant, fast and great handling

  • Sailing the Bavaria 46 Cruiser: elegant, fast and great handling

One of our most frequently chartered boats, t he  Bavaria 46 Cruiser  sailing boat accommodates up to 9 crew members, and is frequently praised for its spaciousness and comfort, as well as its handling characteristics — something the manufacturer also promotes. But one thing is for sure, it is almost unrivalled when it comes to comfort, luxury and space.

Racing or cruising yacht?

Not only is this yacht in the cruiser category (think holiday boat), but it’s currently part of one of the largest one-design fleets in Croatia. This is why every year it is used at the infamous Yachting.com races — Easter Regatta and Palagruža Cup . Each year around 50 Bavaria 46 Cruisers meet at the start of the Easter Regatta and race along the  Croatian  coast from Murter to Dubrovnik and back. An additional gennaker can be rented from the charter company which means the boat can sail very fast despite not being primarily designed for racing.

Who are the designers behind the yacht?

The Bavaria 46 Cruiser , in production at Bavaria Yachts since 2014, is designed by the world-famous Farr Yacht Design (founded by Bruce Farr and Russell Bowler). Farr Yacht Design has been behind the design of nearly a hundred mass-produced vessels, among the most famous being, beside Bavaria, the Beneteau First 35, 36.7, 40.7, the racing boats Farr 30, 280, 400 as well as the Bavaria B/One.

What came before and after?

The predecessor to this Bavaria 46 Cruiser was a boat of the same name, designed by  J&J Design and is easily recognisable thanks to the blue stripe on the hull and across the classic oval windows that were typical of this generation of boats. Apparently, the Bavaria 46 Cruiser has been upgraded for 2022, so we look forward to trying this out as well.

Bavaria 46 older version.

How well-equipped is the sailboat?

As we previously mentioned, this is one of the most popular holiday boats in Croatia and rightfully won the European Boat of the Year in 2015 in the Family Cruiser category. What we appreciate the most is its incredibly comfortable and immense swim platform , which is easily big enough to dance on. And also worth a mention is the spacious, practically designed galley, where you can whip up proper meals just like you would at home. The seating under the spacious bimini and sprayhood is pleasant, providing shelter from the wind in the cockpit and the lamp on the cockpit table makes it wonderfully romantic in the evening.

How does the boat handle?

As this is a holiday cruiser, don't expect racing speeds and as it is a fairly heavy boat (over 12 tonnes), casting off and sailing in light winds can be a bit of a struggle. In powerful winds, however, the Bavaria 46 Cruiser heels quite well , doesn't spin out easily and the gennaker makes for a lot of fun. Just be aware that even though the sailboat does have a gennaker, it isn’t really designed to accommodate one due to the sharp anchor protruding from the bow. This means the gennaker could catch and tear on the anchor while tacking or as a result of a gust of wind. Better would be to move the anchor (not really recommended for safety reasons) or wrap it with cardboard, plastic or foam.

What sails is it equipped with.

Having a furling mainsail allows for easy raising, lowering and reefing of the sails, but makes advanced sail trim impossible. For upwind, the sail area is 107 m 2 whilst for downwind with the gennaker, it’s 206 m 2 .

In Croatia you will find the charter Bavarias are equipped exclusively with an in-mast furling mainsail.

How many cabins are there?

Available in three- or four-cabin versions, both include three full bathrooms with a toilet and a very spacious saloon where 2 more people can sleep. The galley is located along the port side of the boat.

Bavaria 46 Cruiser specifications

The specifications reflect the fact that the boat is classified as an offshore cruiser , where comfort, space and ease of operation are the main considerations.

The displacement of the boat is 12.6 t, 28 % of which is on the keel. The overall length of the boat is 14.27 m, with a waterline length of 12.74 m and its width is 4.35 m with standard draught of 2.1 m.

Powered by a 55-hp Volvo Penta saildrive engine, the boat is equipped with 2 steering wheels, 2 rudder blades and an L-shaped keel.  The diesel tank holds an impressive 210 litres and the water tank 360 litres.

Who do we recommend this boat for?

If you’re expecting great sporting performance, perfect upwind handling or speeds above the 12 kn mark, then look at other options. However, if you're looking for the ideal boat for a summer holiday and are more concerned about comfort, spaciousness and ease of handling , this sailboat is definitely worth considering and would make a good choice. Thanks to its sturdiness, space and weight, it will provide a feeling of security even under the worst conditions and with an electric swim platform over 2.2 m long and almost 1 m wide, this yacht offers luxurious levels of comfort when swimming and sunbathing . A sprayhood and large bimini covering the entire cockpit come as standard on every charter Bavaria 46 Cruiser and the spacious cockpit with its generously-sized table, provides the perfect conditions for dining during the summer months.

The first model in a second generation of Bavaria’s C-series yachts, the new Bavaria C46 offers plenty of internal volume and on-the-water performance

bavaria yachts 46

Product Overview

Maurizio Cossutti’s sixth design for Bavaria, the Bavaria C46, is the first model in a second generation of the German yard’s C-series, which was originally launched six years ago. The new boat offers significantly more interior volume than its predecessor, the C45 from 2018, yet also claims better performance.

What Bavaria now calls its V-bow – broad forward sections that taper to a narrower waterline beam – is balanced by distinct chines aft. The net effect is improved accommodation volumes and greater form stability, yet little extra drag in light airs.

Bavaria continues to offer a wide choice of accommodation layouts, including a four cabin/four heads charter model, and three-cabin/three head option with a big owner’s suite forward.

It’s also possible to substitute one aft head for a Pullman-style fifth cabin, or a multipurpose room that can be used for laundry, or as a workshop etc.

Contrary to many yards, Bavaria doesn’t believe dinghy garages are necessary for a yacht of this size. The pay-off is bigger 160cm-wide aft cabins that can be fitted with convertible twin/double beds. On deck the cockpit is 10% longer than that of the C45 and there’s stowage for plenty of watersports toys.

Options include retractable dinghy davits, 350W of solar panels on the bimini, plus – in a new move for Bavaria – lithium-iron phosphate batteries. The first boat is scheduled to be afloat in summer 2023.

First look: Bavaria C46 – proven concept, bigger size

  • Theo Stocker

The new Bavaria C46 follows hot on the heels of an impressive C38 and C42, and should deliver plenty of volume below without sacrificing sailing comfort

bavaria yachts 46

Product Overview

We tested the latest Bavaria C45 in 2018, which at the time was the first Cossutti designed Bavaria in that size range. Just five years later, Bavaria are bringing out a boat just one foot longer, although for the time being they say that the older boat will remain in the lineup.

The Bavaria C46 will follow in the footsteps of the Bavaria C38 and Bavaria C42 in maximising hull volume with full-length hull chines and a wide beam of 4.7m carried all the way aft. The hull is controlled with a single, deep and balanced spade rudder, and seakindliness is improved by a v-bow section in the forefoot – a concept that appeared to work well when I tested the C38, making the Bavaria C46’s smaller sister engaging and enjoyable to sail despite the large volume.

Where the new Bavaria C46 really shines, however, is the sheer amount of space and accommodation on board. The only fixed point of the accommodation is the saloon and galley, with C-shaped seating around a table to starboard with a bench seat amidships, and a large C-shaped galley along the hull side to port. Aft of the galley is a forward facing chart table – these are making their way back onto boats as remote working from on board is now commonplace.

bavaria yachts 46

Plenty of volume makes for a very spacious interior.

This is where the options kick in. The boat comes in three, four, or five cabin layouts, with either one or two double cabins forwards. The fifth comes from replacing the heads and shower compartment starboard aft with a bunk cabin, meaning two families of five could comfortably sail together.

For those looking to cruise without so many guests, the port heads and chart table can be replaced with a utility room, making space for washing machines and dryers, as well as ample stowage space for tools or as a wet locker.

If you go for the four double cabin layout, you can also have en suite heads for every cabin. Some of these layouts will appeal more for charter companies, but the drawings look like Bavaria have got the heart of the boat right, and highly practical.

On deck, the cockpit is wider than it is long, with L-shaped seats on either side around either one or two cockpit tables, which convert to sunpads. Most lines are led aft to the helm stations, though some options have coaming-top genoa winches. Genoa car tracks are mounted on the coachroof for a fine sheeting angle.

There isn’t an option to have boom-end mainsheet attachment sadly, but otherwise this all looks like a sensible and easily-handled boat.

Review – Bavaria C46 vs. Beneteau Oceanis 46.1

Monohull - sailing yacht review & comparison, in this review article, we compare two most modern midsized family cruisers from two of the largest series production shipyards and fierce competitors in both the private- and charter ownership segment of the leisure marine industry., when sailing is meant to be done in style and at ease, and where comfort and elegance comes together to create seamless harmony between simplicity and sophistication..

Embracing your unique needs and preferences is key to finding the perfect monohull for your cruising lifestyle. While comfort and performance can be subjective and relative, it’s important to trust your instincts and ask yourself the right questions as you navigate this exciting decision. Your journey is yours to define and with careful consideration, you’ll discover the vessel that will unlock your full potential as a seafaring adventurer. Let your passion for exploration guide you and embrace the freedom that comes with finding the perfect monohull sailing yacht. The adventure awaits!

And convenience is king! With automation and energy-saving tools, we can easily adapt to life at sea without having to sacrifice any of our creature comforts. And let’s not forget safety – after all, no one wants to be stranded at sea.

So, let’s hoist the sail, kick back, and enjoy the ride without having to worry about all the technical stuff. Aye, aye, captain!

The re-birth of the modern cruiser-performance sailing yacht

Following in the wake of the Oceanis 51.1, many of the production shipyards saw the continuum of wide stern hulls and full bow design with a long chine opening up for wider interior spaces and focus on ease of handling and more down-wind focused sailing and ease of movement on deck.

The modern cruising boat was born and more design aspects from reputable performance-orientated naval architects were being introduced as two of the largest production-orientated shipyards; the Groupe Beneteau and Bavaria Yachtbau, introduced a distinct design feature in their midrange ranges of sailing yachts – the Oceanis range for Benetau and the C-range for Bavaria.

The Beneteau Oceanis range was long a dual-purpose yacht as the Beneteau First range was set on pause for a while and clients were offered a First Line Package to “spruce” up the rather under-rigged and downwind-focused Oceanis to a more livelier and performance-cruiser orientated configuration. With the additional First Line package, the boat owner will receive a deeper, lead bulb keel, a taller mast and a genoa, which provides 28% more sail area. The Oceanis 46.1 is vintage Beneteau in terms of basic construction. The hull is moulded in polyester, while the deck is comprised of an injected fibreglass/foam-core sandwich, with a moulded-in anti-skid; the deck-stepped, double-spreader mast is aluminium; and both the shoal and standard-draft keels are cast iron

The Bavaria yachts had long ago forsaken the performance-focused market with its famous cooperation with FAAR and instead had launched arguably the most appreciated range of midsized sailing yachts and pure cruiser-focused range of yachts in their aptly named Bavaria Cruiser-line of sailing yachts. With the decision to modernize its range, they reached out to famous Italian naval architect Cossutti, with plenty of pedigree in the offshore racing and cruising world.

Elegant – Smart Living Spaces – Fast Cruising – Easy Sailing

The Oceanis 46.1 is in itself a design separate from the 51.1, with its design team Pascal-Conq given the task to mirror the sporty feel and large-yacht aspects of the 51.1 into the 46.1. The design team is no stranger to Beneteau, as they have designed most of the smaller range Oceanis from 24-36 ft before taking on the 46.1 and also famous for having introduced the twin-rudder concept into high-octane racing classes like the IMOCA. Both the Oceanis 46.1 and the Bavaria C46 use the twin-rudder setup to compensate for their wide stern and high-freeboard hull designs.

The first model in a second generation of Bavaria’s C-series yachts, the new Bavaria C46 offers plenty of internal volume and on-the-water performance. This is Cossutti’s sixth design for Bavaria, the Bavaria C46, is the first model in a second generation of the German yard’s C-series, which was originally launched six years ago. The new boat offers significantly more interior volume than its predecessor, the C45 from 2018, yet also claims better performance.

The Stepped Hulls vs. the V-Bow and Chines

What both these modern cruiser sailing yachts clearly have in common, is the incredible space and beamy nature of the yachts that create an incredible amount of roominess below deck and space and stowage and ease of movement deckside.

The Oceanis range with its “stepped” hulls and with a chine that runs from stern to bow in combination with its wide stern, creates a roominess and feeling you earlier only found on large cruiser sizes of +50ft and up. The owner’s cabin for example on the Oceanis 46.1 is comparable to the predecessor of the older design of the Oceanis 50 and the 55.

The Pascal Conq-designed Oceanis 46.1 features a “stepped” hull, in which the canoe body flares dramatically to a chine immediately above the waterline, thereby allowing Beneteau to maximize interior volume while maintaining a narrow entry forward. The new and more powerful hull shape of the Oceanis range, with a stepped or full-chined hull, with greater righting moment and the addition of twin rudders for added control.

Same principles apply with the new C-line design and characteristic features of the hull design with the typical Bavaria V‐bow and chines, which not only give the Bavaria C46 impressive sailing characteristics but also create more light space and living comfort below deck in the saloon as well as the cabins.

The slab-sided and modern design approaches to both these voluminous sailing yachts are aimed towards creating an experience like that of a modern apartment and maximising the use of the yacht at anchor – a static experience. The concept of “building inside and out” is not strange to the cruiser range of the shipbuilding industry, as most of the appeal and interest comes from the charter-industry that demands easier handling yachts and comfort at anchor and space to combine several layout options and configurations.

Is all this comfort then at the cost of a sailing experience? Yes, there is no denying that, albeit these naval yacht designer know their thing and looking at both hull designs their arguably focus on down-wind sailing and making it easy for crew and guests alike to be comfortable. However, with the First Line package offered for the Oceanis range and its famously slippery hull design and modern rigging from the Cossutti-designed Bavaria C-line, we are not surprised that they would rather be called performance-cruisers than just your average holiday-making cruiser and sailing yacht.

The opinions are divided on the matter of what entails an ideal live-aboard monohull sailing yacht: the strength of the design, construction and feeling at the helm of the performance-optimised monohulls such as the Italia Yachts, Grand Soleil, X-Yachts, J-Boats, or the luxury of the all-inclusive optimal holiday platform of the larger series production shipyards  such as the Oceanis range from Beneteau, Sun Odyssey from Jeanneau, C-Line from Bavaria, Impression from Elan, the Hanse or the Dufour range of cruiser sailing yachts.

We are not here to create division but rather to point out the why and how. For the yacht charter industry, the advantages are obvious and plenty. Most of the above-mentioned production series shipyards are closely tied or owned by the same group as the large global charter companies that offer yacht charter ownership programs and investments, such as the Dream Yacht Charter, Navigare Yachting, SunSail and Moorings.

For the charter industry, the advantages of this configuration are multiple:

  • Beamy design: create plenty of main deck space and seating/lounging arrangements, allowing for a larger side deck, cockpits and bathing platforms.
  • Volumuniuos hulls: increases the stowage -and payload capacity and width in the cabins.
  • Skipper cabins: as with most of these designs, even at 45 feet there is room to accommodate skipper accommodation.
  • Layout and Size: optimal cabin configurations and spacious double bed cabins cater for plenty of guests and even crewed charter.
  • Saloon Main Deck: focus on dining arrangements and entertainment with larger galley sizes. No need for a navigational station as most time is spent at anchor or navigating short distances and a professional skipper often manages boat.
  • Easy Push Button Sailing: usually underigged sailing yachts which are most pleasurable sailing “off the wind” and with most or all control and working lines drawn aft near the helm. Clear destination between guest areas and crew/helm area.

If you are unfamiliar with the two brands or the sailing yachts in question, here’s a brief introduction.

Bavaria Yachtbau

The Bavaria shipyard has been in the forefront of building sailing yachts on large scale for over 45 years. Today Bavaria Yachts is one of the most modern manufacturers of sailing yachts and motorboats worldwide. The shipyard has been known since its founding as an innovation leader in serial yacht manufacturing. Over 600 sailing yachts and motorboats are manufactured on the shipyard of BAVARIA YACHTS in Giebelstadt, near Würzburg in Germany. Four production lines, each 125 meters long, a carpenter’s workshop where the entirety of the yacht is constructed, two halls to manufacture hulls and decks, are accommodated on a large surface measuring 200,000 square meters. It’s needless to say – an impressive shipyard with a strong brand and almost a fan-based following in central and northern Europe.

From the Shipyard:

“The BAVARIA C46 sets new standards in the combination of ample room, excellent sailing characteristics and innovative solutions. The BAVARIA C46 possesses agile steering, converts the wind even faster into boat speed and, at the same time, allows for maximally large cabins in the stern and foreship. Thus, space and sailing pleasure are a winning combination on the BAVARIA C46.”

Groupe Beneteau

Groupe Beneteau is a worldwide market leader for boats and a European frontrunner for leisure homes. With its global production capacities and global sales networks, the Group employs 7,600 people in France, the US, Poland, Italy, Portugal and China. Since 1884, the Beneteau family boatyard has successfully evolved through the decades, from fishing to recreational boating and diversified itself. Today, Groupe Beneteau, through its brands and services, has developed unique skill sets and technical know-how in boating and leisure homes.

In 2021, the Beneteau Groupe was bought up (59%) by investment group PPF and is part of a drive towards creating an even more dominating presence in the yacht charter market with the acquisition of both Dream Yacht Charter and Navigare Yachting.

The Beneteau shipyard used to offer two lines of models for years, the Oceanis range and the First range. The biggest shipyard in the world had stopped with the sportive line of First sailing yachts until a few years ago when the group bought a small Slovenian shipyard with sportive sailing boats at the smaller end of the market. In the meantime, they were secretly planning their comeback in the performance cruiser market, until then dominated by Dehler and Grand Soleil. The option to upgrade the Oceanis line cruiser with the sporty FIRST LINE package is available for those boat owners who want to configure a boat for more thrilling and lively behaviour at the helm.

From the shipyard:

“The Oceanis 46.1 was awarded the European Yacht of the Year in 2019. The panel stressed the yacht’s high performance and the incredible sensations at the helm. The  Oceanis 46.1  won the  Family Cruiser category in 2019. The cruising yacht of world market leader Beneteau shows the same lines as the Oceanis 51.1, which was nominated last year – with one important difference: The 46.1 has more sail area, thus has even better sailing characteristics thanks to a finely balanced rig geometry and successful lift distribution. Below deck she offers up to ten berths in five cabins. The boat is highly customizable, modern and has an appealing design.”

Bavaria C46   The Concept

The new bavaria c46 is a perfect combination of german engineering and italian master-class design. .

A word from Dirk and Viktor (Yacht-Match Group co-founders):

bavaria yachts 46

“With the C42, Bavaria presented a convincing new edition of the upscale C-line three years ago. For its harmonious construction, particularly good sailing characteristics, and very homely and comfortable interior design, Bavaria’s new yacht was awarded the title of Europe’s Yacht of the Year 2021 in the category of cruising yachts. The latest model of Bavaria C-Line, a 14-meter, was presented as the world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2023 and was recently nominated for the 2024 European Yacht of the Year Award. According to the designer Maurizio Cossutti, the brief was clear but not easy: “- Bavaria wanted a larger, more comfortable boat but one that should look more elegant and slimmer a contradiction”, he explained to the German magazine Die Yacht in their latest test sail of the C46 in the fall of 2023. The German sheeting system, perfected by Bavaria, makes the new C46 particularly suitable for sailors who often travel with a small crew or even single-handed.”

Viktor van Savooyen & Dirk Agter

“The brief was clear but not easy: Bavaria wanted a larger more comfortable boat but one that should look more elegant and slimmer a contradiction”.”

MAURIZIO COSSUTTI

Cossutti Hull Design

The Bavaria C46 follows in the footsteps of the Bavaria C38 and Bavaria C42, maximizing hull volume with full-length hull chines and a wide beam of 4.7m carried all the way aft. The hull is controlled with a single, deep and balanced spade rudder, and sea-kindliness  is improved by a v-bow section in the forefoot. This concept truly puts the “ease” in easy sailing with a flat hull shape, rigging, and rudder all working together for an engaging and enjoyable to sail despite the large volume. The shapes and designs of Cossutti are well-proven in the offshore category and his latest smaller and larger models with the Bavaria C-Line.

Improved version of the C45 at every point.

Maurizio Cossutti’s sixth design for Bavaria, the Bavaria C46, is the first model in a second generation of the German yard’s C-series, initially launched six years ago. The new boat offers significantly more interior volume than its predecessor, the C45 from 2018, yet claims better performance.

The requirements for a sailing yacht around 15 meters are much more versatile today. They can no longer be divided into classic categories such as performance or family cruiser, charter or owner’s yacht. During the development of the C46, the focus was solely on what offers our customers real added value on board.

Larger and Better

Where the new Bavaria C46 shines is the sheer amount of space and accommodation on board. The only fixed point of the accommodation is the saloon and galley, with C-shaped seating around a table to starboard with a bench seat amidships and a sizeable C-shaped galley along the hull side to port. Aft of the galley is a forward-facing chart table – these are returning onto boats as remote working from onboard is now commonplace.

Sleek Hulls yet still larger interior volumes and cabins

What Bavaria now calls its V-bow – broad forward sections that taper to a narrower waterline beam – is balanced by distinct chines aft. The net effect is improved accommodation volumes and greater form stability , yet little extra drag in light airs.

Contrary to many yards, Bavaria doesn’t believe dinghy garages are necessary for a yacht of this size. The pay-off is bigger 160cm-wide aft cabins that can be fitted with convertible twin/double beds. On deck, the cockpit is 10% longer than the C45, and there’s stowage for plenty of water sports toys.

Beneteau Oceanis 46.1   The Concept

The beneteau oceanis 46.1 is a dual-purpose sailing yacht replacing a previous best seller. .

“Beneteau’s second addition to its range of Oceanis cruiser-performance yachts, the 46.1, was a highly-anticipated model that built on the success of the Oceanis 45, Beneteau’s most popular model to date in 2019. With over 800 units sold of the Oceanis 45, it’s easy to see why Beneteau intends to keep the same design combination of Finot Conq for hull lines and Nauta Yachts for styling and interior while adding several improved features. The design team aimed to maintain the primary features of sailing performance, a spacious cockpit, and interior volume while enhancing the hull shape to increase righting moment and improve control with the addition of twin rudders. The 46.1 boasts a variety of options, including a ‘First Line’ upgrade that maximizes performance with a taller mast and deeper keel. Beneteau’s innovation and attention to detail have resulted in a remarkable model that meets and exceeds the highest expectations of avid sailors.”
“…the Oceanis 46.1 is enhanced with cutting-edge technology. We have greatly improved hull stability and eliminated added resistance by digital tank-testing. We decided to give her a twin rudder to improve control under sail. As for the configuration of the First Line version, you might be tempted to beat upwind even on a cruise!.”

PASCAL CONQ

Unraveling the Design

The Beneteau Oceanis 46.1 boasts a modern design with undeniable appeal. Its spacious cockpit, well-planned interiors, and broad bathing platform are some of its distinctive features. The deck layout is designed to facilitate movement, ensuring the utmost safety for all on board.

Notable Features

The Beneteau Oceanis 46.1 is packed with notable features that enhance its appeal. Its spacious and well-protected cockpit with ample lounging areas makes it ideal for socialising. The intelligent use of space extends below deck, where the ample storage, fully equipped galley, and comfortable cabins ensure a pleasant stay.

Liveability and Comfort

The Beneteau Oceanis 46.1 offers unprecedented comfort for a yacht of its size. The clever use of space, abundant natural light, and ventilation make the interior feel spacious and homely. The main salon features a U-shaped seating area, a sizeable dining table, and a fully equipped L-shaped galley that makes meal preparation a breeze. The cabins, complete with ensuite facilities, offer privacy and comfort, ensuring you can rest and rejuvenate after a day of sailing.

Deck and Cockpit

The deck layout of the Oceanis 46.1 is designed with functionality in mind. The cockpit is spacious and offers a safe and comfortable environment for navigation. The twin wheels offer an unobstructed view of the sails and the horizon. The bathing platform, when lowered, serves as an excellent launching pad for water sports and makes boarding the yacht after a swim a simple task.

exterior design features and aspects

Bavaria C46   Exterior

Exterior design.

Sleek – Stabile – Balanced -Responsive; what else would you expect from a Cussutti designed yacht!?

But what do you with all of that extra space created by an new hull shape and design?

The cockpit is more wide than long and more room has been created for the very spacious cockpit, the sun loungers on the foredeck or after a relaxing time on the large bathing platform, you can quickly get into the water. Heavy but useful water sports equipment is always stored within reach in the Bavaria B-BOX, so that the hours at anchor or in water can be enjoyed in a relaxed way by the entire crew.

So you see, the new Bavaria C46 is really conscious effort by the yard and designer to carefully improve on every aspect possible and listen to its current boat owners to find a good balance between what is most important for practical use and to stay true to the C-Line DNA.

The layout in the cockpit provides for two U-shaped seating groups, plus two separate tables that can be lowered as an option. With additional insert cushions, two very spacious sun loungers can be easily installed in the cockpit. What’s more, the passage through the cockpit remains free.

With six optional winch positions in the cockpit, the deck layout of the Bavaria C46 can be tailored to different requirements, be it for cruising with the family or for sporting use with a crew. Similar to the larger models C50 and C57, all sheets, halyards and control lines are routed to the helm stations, leaving the cockpit and the entrance to the cabin free. This makes the Bavaria C46 particularly suitable for sailors who often travel with a small crew or even single-handed.

A well balanced yacht makes for easy sailing

The Bavaria Yachts perfected the German sheeting system and it goes without saying that the accolades and distinctive design features incorporated by Cossutti, brings together very easy and smooth sailing experience for anyone looking to both enjoy upwind sailing and also be comfortable operating the C46 singled handily or short-handed. All control lines are pulled aft and operated single-handily from the helm station which makes the joy and easy of sailing all the more easier with the standard self-tacking jib and in mast-furler system and integrated bowsprit.

Ease of movement and comfort at the heart

The clear pathways and uncluttered space around the helm station and cockpit leaves a well thought through division between guest area and helm area. Movement around the cockpit back aft to the bathing platform is made more easier on the C46 with the wider beam of stern section of the hull, and movement around the boat is made easier with flushed design of the sheeting system and the wide sidecks supported  by raised bulk wards and side shrouds to easy get from the cockpit to the bow of the yacht. The guests and captain can truly feel at ease on the C46.

Summary of the key exterior highlights :

  • Cockpit Layout: clear destination between guest and crew with plenty of room to move about and thanks to the flushed German sheeting there are no control lines in the way. Passage through the cockpit remains free.
  • Well balanced & Easy Sailing:  The mast, positioned further back, allows for a self-tacking jib, simplifying handling for short-handed sailing with all of the control lines drawn well aft to the two operating winches right next to the helm. The standard self-tacking jib in combination with an in-mast furler mainsail adds to this easy sailing. The hull shape of Cussutti design minimize wetarea and in combination with the single rudder setup, German sheeting, and a balanced rigging setup, is a far easier cruiser to sail both upwind and also in heavier weather as proven by the other C-Line models and Cossutti designed yachts.
  • Upwind capabilities:  the narrower and sleek hull shape and clever positioning of the full chine, allows you to sail comfortably upwind with a proven offshore capable design of Cossutti C-Line. In combination with a deeper single fin rudder system, it also ensures, that on a whole, that you have a more responsive feel at the helm and improved steering control, making for a much more pleasurable sailing experience and a easier handling.
  • Multifaceted Deck & Cockpit Area: faceted and perfectly integrated activity areas like the sunbathing area on the coachroof, seating in the pulpit or the large cockpit with lounge character, convertible into two big sunbeds.

Beneteau-46.1

Beneteau Oceanis 46.1   Exterior

The yacht’s exterior is a blend of style and functionality. The twin rudders ensure perfect balance under sail, while the full-length chine guarantees a stable and quick yacht under all conditions. The mast, positioned further back, allows for a self-tacking jib, simplifying handling for short-handed sailing.

A boat for in the sun

The Oceanis 46.1 boasts a sleek and contemporary design with a spacious cockpit that exudes a Mediterranean feel. The full-beam bathing platforms on each end of the cockpit provide added space for sunbathing and relaxation. Similar to other modern-designed performance cruisers of our age, the preferred set-up for the winches is far aft and out of the cockpit, leaving ample room for families to enjoy.

While its layout accommodates sailing with a small crew, it requires proper organization of running rigging. Fortunately, there is a locker for rope tails that has a mesh material base to allow easy draining. The helmsman can use the raised panel where the winches are mounted, which is broad enough to keep them dry. The large cockpit table provides additional slippage protection when heeled and sitting on the cockpit bench, accommodating an easily accessible liferaft beneath. The deep sail locker and quarter lockers provide additional storage for deck items.

  • Cockpit Layout: The forward part of the cockpit is clear of lines with plenty of lounging space. Its spacious and well-protected cockpit, complete with large lounging areas, makes it ideal for socializing. The beam provides room for an impressively large cockpit, complete with twin wheels and twin benches that are both plenty long and (equally important) well-proportioned for lounging.
  • Easy Sailing: The mast, positioned further back, allows for a self-tacking jib, simplifying handling for short-handed sailing with all of the control lines drawn well aft to the two operating winches right next to the helm. The standard self-tacking jib in combination with an in-mast furler mainsail adds to this easy sailing.
  • Fun Sailing: The twin rudders is necessary with such a wide stern and ensure that you can remain balanced under sail, while the full-length chine guarantees a stable and quick yacht under all conditions. With the First Line package, you can upgrade to a more performance-orientated version, with a full-baten main sail, deeper keel, different winch setup and even double hydraulic backstay and carbon mast and boom
  • Stability and Comfort: The clever hull design of the Beneteau Oceanis 46.1 ensures a smooth, stable ride, regardless of the sea state. Its easy to get around the side-decks with spread wide and raised bulwarks for better footing when heeled.

interior design features

bavaria-c46-interior-saloon-cabin-dining-bed-head (3)

Bavaria C46   Interior

New generation interior design.

On the C46, as accustomed on the new C-Line, Bavaria offer the Design package, which is a new and improved list options for interior fabrics and woodwork. This is a clear step away from the Cruiser Line and more simple finishing and classic options.  Fabric-covered panels on the main bulkhead and a linear lighting concept as well as leather on the stainless steel handles create a unique atmosphere in the salon and cabins. Teak or Esthec in the cockpit and the choice of the hull stripe color and many more details are also part of the package.

Interior Volume: but not at the expense of sailing capabilities

Where the new Bavaria C46 really shines, however, is the sheer amount of space and accommodation on board. The only fixed point of the accommodation is the saloon and galley, with C-shaped seating around a table to starboard with a bench seat amidships, and a large C-shaped galley along the hull side to port. Aft of the galley is a forward facing chart table – these are making their way back onto boats as remote working from on board is now commonplace.

Layout Combinations to suite everyone

Bavaria continues to offer a wide choice of accommodation layouts, including a four cabin/four heads charter model, and three-cabin/three head option with a big owner’s suite forward. It’s also possible to substitute one aft head for a Pullman-style fifth cabin, or a multipurpose room that can be used for laundry, or as a workshop etc.

Summary of the key interior highlights :

  • Various Layout Options: Various combinations for interior layouts with 3 up to 5 cabins and 3 up to 4 ensuite heads. Ideal combination for a private ownership with a charter management.
  • A navigation seat with ideal seat height and perfect viewing direction is included with every layout variant
  • New Generation interior design features and options
  • The large utility room to starboard, for all sailors who would prefer to be on board all year round. Just one of many possibilities for the configuration of a very individual BAVARIA C46.
  • Large bathroom and standing height
  • Large aft-cabins
  • Alone or as a couple, the aft cabin to starboard with two berths that quickly convert into a large double bed.
  • Good airflow in all cabins due plenty of hatches on and opening windows
  • Plenty of stowage possibilities

beneteau_oceanis_46.1_interior_saloon

Beneteau Oceanis 46.1   Interior

Step inside the Beneteau Oceanis 46.1, and you are welcomed by an ambient interior that is both luxurious and practical. Available in various layouts, including three to five cabins, the interior can be customized to suit your sailing needs. The use of brushed oak and mahogany highlights the elegance of the yacht, making it a floating home away from home.

Feels like a +50 feet

The Oceanis 46.1 shares similarities with the successful Oceanis 45, particularly on its deck layout. The designers focused on identifying areas where they could maximize space, resulting in a new hull shape. Despite being only 10cm longer than the 45 model, its maximum beam is carried further forward and higher up, significantly increasing internal volume. The chine allows for an additional 0.5m of beam, which is evident in the expanded saloon berths that extend 15cm compared with its predecessor. However, the forward cabin is where you can truly appreciate the difference, as it takes inspiration from the Oceanis 48, which serves as a testament to its ample volume.

The Owner’s Cabin

In the Oceanis 46.1 for instance, the added volume is most evident in the forward owner’s cabin, where to either side of the island queen berth there is room at the foot of the bed to stand, and outboard of that, there’s still more room for two sets of shelves by the in-hull ports. The cabin also features two hanging lockers and separate shower and head compartments, one to port, the other to starboard. The owner’s cabin on this yacht is truly impressive. The design incorporates separate shower and head compartments, creating a greater sense of space in the cabin and providing an effortless conversion into two ensuite cabins, ideal for a charter version.

The sense of space is also emphasized in the saloon and galley, making it an ideal space for entertaining guests. The addition of an inboard worktop section in the galley provides more serving space and a secure work area even when the yacht is heeling. With numerous layout options, including three to five cabins with two to four heads, there is also the choice of a longitudinal galley with a navigational station to starboard. Overall, this yacht is an ideal vessel for those who value comfort, space, and practicality.

The Beneteau Oceanis 46.1 offers an unprecedented level of comfort for a yacht of its size. The clever use of space, abundant natural light, and ventilation make the interior feel spacious and homely. The main salon features a U-shaped seating area, a sizeable dining table, and a fully equipped L-shaped galley that makes meal preparation a breeze. The cabins, complete with ensuite facilities, offer privacy and comfort, ensuring that you can rest and rejuvenate after a day of sailing.

  • Various Layout Options: ideal combination for a private ownership with a charter management.
  • Sensational use of extra interior space to create a luxurious feel and roomy saloon
  • Light and spacious and well-ventilated
  • Large after cabins thanks to removing quarter lockers in the cockpit
  • Plenty of handrails to move down the companionway and along the saloon
  • Many design features are taken from the larger luxurious Oceans Yacht 62, such as the bookcases built into the central bulkhead, the fabric linings and the indirect lighting.
  • Lounge and seating arrangements for large groups both inside and outside
  • Impressive owner’s cabin with a large island bed and good use of cleverly hidden stowage units and natural light.

Beneteau Oceanis 46.1   Pros- & Cons

  • The Oceanis 46.1 takes all the best bits of the excellent Oceanis 45 and makes them slightly better

  • Customizability: Dual Purpose boat for easy sailing or Performance Cruising,
  • Lack of galley stowage
  • Finishing detail
  • Exposed wiring
  • Helmseating/Position: The helmsman can share the raised panel on which the winches are mounted to keep a dry seat. However, it is too wide in the aft quarters to be able to wedge in there comfortably and still be able to reach the wheel.
  • Need to keep control lines & running rigging tidy: need to be well organized with the running rigging and keep control lines and rope tails tidy with the mesh bags and lockers.
  • Too narrow to use a winch between the primary and main winch each side (better to take the option of electric winch)
  • Squeaky and loose sole boards: the need rubber gaskets to stop the sound they make stepping on them.
