Your guide to Navy Pier

Completed in 1916, Navy Pier is undeniably one of Chicago’s top attractions. Stretching into Lake Michigan, this year-round destination truly comes to life in the summer, with fireworks displays, live music, theatre, and cruises setting sail daily. Come fall and winter, Navy Pier is still hopping, with special events, sights, and activities that span all ages and interests. Here’s just a glimpse of the fun to be had at Navy Pier.

Rides and games

navy pier sailboat

Centennial Wheel : The Centennial Wheel soars to nearly 200 feet, with year-round, climate-controlled gondolas for the most spectacular Ferris wheel ride ever. It’s an iconic part of the Chicago skyline and a treasured piece of Chicago history, harkening to the city’s 1893 World’s Fair. You can even book a VIP Centennial Wheel experience in a glass-bottomed, plush-seated gondola.

Navy Pier

Pier Park : Pier Park is the epitome of fun. It’s where you’ll find the amazing Centennial Wheel, the Pepsi Wave Swinger, a 1920s-inspired musical carousel, and other nostalgic fairground rides — all with breathtaking skyline and waterfront views.

Amazing Chicago’s Funhouse Maze : This is Chicago’s only self-paced, full sensory maze experience. Navigate your way through 4,000 square feet of tunnels, mazes, and games.

Amazing Chicago’s Time Freak Game : Race against the block to gather points during this high-speed, all-ages game.

Cultural attractions and museums

Chicago Children’s Museum : Kids dig for bones on a dinosaur expedition, scale a three-story schooner, and even make a splash in a water playground. Chicago Children’s Museum is three floors of unadulterated fun for kids aged 10 and under. Don’t miss the Chicago Children’s Museum store while you’re there for fun, educational, and imagination-expanding toys and games.

Chicago Shakespeare Theater : This Tony Award-winning theatre hosts more than 650 performances a year, with a year-round season that presents plays, musicals, world premieres, and visiting touring companies. The theatre is particularly celebrated for The Yard, an engineering marvel in stage design, consisting of nine moveable towers that can be reconfigured to accomplish the vision of each production.

Outdoor adventures

Boat cruises and tours : Whatever’s on your cruise wish list, you’ll find it at Navy Pier. Cruise on Lake Michigan and the Chicago River and experience everything from laid-back sightseeing and elegant dining to heart-pumping thrill rides and private charters. There’s even a cruise you and your dog can enjoy.

Bus and bike tours : Access any number of Chicago tours from Navy Pier, including Chicago Big Bus Tours, architecture and sightseeing cruises, Navy Pier food and history tours, and Bike & Roll Chicago tours. You can also rent bicycles to explore the lakefront at your own pace.

Public art and exhibitions : Navy Pier presents a rotating array of contemporary art designed to excite and inspire visitors. An ever-evolving schedule of art installations and exhibits keeps Navy Pier’s art scene hopping throughout the year.

Polk Bros Park : Polk Bros Fountain and Plaza at the entry to Navy Pier features a dramatic fountain with more than 150 jets that mimic the movement of waves, schools of fish, or flocks of birds. The Performance Lawns include two performance spaces to host live arts and cultural events, with Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline as their backdrops. Definitely stop in at The Peoples Energy Welcome Pavilion, too, for information about things to do and see at the pier, guest maps, and more.

Food & drink

Beer Garden : This seasonal beer garden is one of Chicago’s go-to destinations for free, live, outdoor music. This lakeside venue also offers some of the city’s best lake and skyline views.

Offshore Rooftop & Bar : The nation’s largest rooftop bar, Offshore Rooftop & Bar offers panoramic lakefront and city views from atop Navy Pier’s Festival Hall. The space features a full-service kitchen, creative cocktails, cozy fire pits, and lounge seating.

Chef Art Smith’s Reunion : It’s all about coming together over simple, delicious food at Reunion, a welcoming and family-oriented spot helmed by acclaimed chef Art Smith. The menu offers comforting dishes with Southern flavors.

There’s a never-ending array of food options on the Pier , representing some of Chicago’s most well-known cuisine. Here are just a few options:

  • America’s Dog & Burger : Classic Chicago-style dogs and more
  • Beat Kitchen Cantina : An outpost of a beloved neighborhood venue
  • Big Bowl Chinese Express : Fast and casual Asian cuisine
  • Billy Goat Tavern : Home of the world famous “cheezborger”
  • Garrett Popcorn Shops : A local legend, don’t miss the classic Garrett’s Mix
  • Giordano’s : Iconic deep dish pizza, an only-in-Chicago experience
  • Harry Caray’s Tavern : Barbecue, local craft beer, and sports memorabilia
  • Lirica : Elevated Latin-inspired fare with sweeping waterfront views
  • The Original Rainbow Cone : A Chicago classic, five flavors piled high on a cake cone

Summer fireworks and events

The annual summer fireworks at Navy Pier are a favorite among locals and visitors alike, drawing crowds to the lakefront for the twice-weekly show.

The summer fireworks display traditionally takes place on Wednesdays and Saturdays between Memorial Day and Labor Day. The show typically starts between 9:30 and 10:15 p.m., check the latest schedule for details.

You can see the fireworks from most areas of the lakefront immediately north and south of Navy Pier. But the show is particularly stunning from atop the Centennial Wheel or on an evening lakefront fireworks cruise.

Water Flicks at Navy Pier

Summer also brings a full line-up of fun and free events to the Pier. Check out some of the music, fitness, food, and family-friendly events you can expect each summer:

  • Neighborhood Artisan Markets and Workshops

Knowledgeable about the city so you get to learn a little history about Chicago SkiyLine and the City. • Jayepstein201 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Chicago We were really looking forward to this tour, however our seat choice turned out not to be the best. We sat at the back of the vessel near the captain. It was very hard to hear the guide because the captain and first mate were talking and the radio traffic from other crafts was constant. Because the boat was full, we didn’t have a lot of options to move. From what we could hear, Matt, the guide was informative, funny and personable. We have taken many sightseeing boat cruises in other cities and even others in Chicago, and this one was average. We did enjoy watching the raising and lowering of the masts, and the crew even let some of the guests help out. We thought the trip was to be 75 to 90 minutes but we were back within 70 minutes. • 884AC884 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Twilight sail, fantastic views, loved it! My wife and I went for the 7 pm twilight sail on a hot summer weekday evening. Purchasing our tickets through TripAdvisor saved us the "Taxes & Fees $11.44 " that the tallshipwindy dot com web site adds. Boarding began about 15 minutes before sailing time, a few other passengers payed extra for "VIP Captains Boarding", that seemed a waste to us as the only perk is to board first. The ship is an open deck with benches to sit wherever you want to. Before boarding a photographer takes pics of you by a ship's wheel, and then sells the photo package after the trip. The first mate was funny and kept it lively with funny patter at times. Pleasant 80s and 90s top forty rock played in the background. There's a bar on the lower level inside, a special drink and a club soda were $15.94 with tax as of September 2023. The wind was good and they lifted two sails, for a good while we enjoyed the lake and downtown skyline during sunset under sail power. Overall the trip was 75 minutes, the views were fantastic and we enjoyed everything. Read more Written September 3, 2023

  • 777Guy 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles New owner has ruined what used to be a great event! I would give half a circle or no circle at all if I could - the Sunday "Special Event" 2023 Air and Water Show was anything but special. Apparently the new owners couldn't bring themselves to actually putting the ship in position to watch the entire Air and Water Show - it was the ultimate bait and switch as the ship was back at the dock before the premier event performers, the Thunderbirds, even appeared. Members of the crew just lounged around taking up limited seating space at the bow and being in the way when it came time for limited photo opportunities due largely to the fact we were light years from the activity except for the moments when some military jets made wide turns far out in the lake. As for sailing, due to no wind, it was a joke and being a sailor, they should never even attempted to raise sails - they just got in the way of viewing the show. Given the heat, they could have slowly motored to create a little apparent wind - perhaps that's how they make the bulk of their money, off of the bar, while baking everyone on board to death. I had done the Air and Water Show on Windy 2 years ago and it was a 10 star trip despite wearing a mask during boarding for Covid and some anchoring woes. In 2021 the ship left Navy Pier early enough to be on location prior to the start of the show and they stayed through to the end. It wasn't until after the show that the sails were even raised so viewing the airshow wouldn't be restricted. I had driven over from Michigan for this event, and thankfully watched the Saturday show from the lakefront. Audio of the show broadcast on the boat was haphazard at best due to the time delay from WBBM - we listened to far more commercials and traffic reports than we did air show commentary. The crew should have just turned off the feed and put on some music. Never again on Windy - a total bust in terms of value and disingenuous to hype it as a way to see the show. Heading back in before the premier performers even appeared was the nail in the coffin for me. Read more Written August 22, 2023

United States Sail Grand Prix - Chicago

Kiwis win opening event of Season 4 as SailGP's fast and furious racing returns to Lake Michigan.

New Zealand mastered tricky light wind conditions with perfect positioning and tactical nous to seize the first victory of SailGP Season 4.

The Kiwis beat arch rivals Australia and Phil Robertson’s Canada to top the leaderboard after two days of close-to-shore racing on Lake Michigan.

Despite pressure from Tom Slingsby’s crew, it was the Kiwis who commanded the winner-takes-all Final from the start, securing the best angle to Mark One and sneaking inside at the top gate.

The event-deciding match-up culminated in a slow motion drag race to the finish line, which ultimately saw Peter Burling’s crew sneak over the line to take an early lead atop the Championship rankings.

AROUND PROGRESS

LATEST MARINA NEWS

Navy Pier Marina Supporters,   I am very excited to share that we have resolved our dispute with the City of Chicago and have entered into an agreement that will allow the long-awaited Navy Pier Marina to be built. We will be submitting our final revised plans for issuance of the Harbor Permit, which will allow us to commence construction.   We will work hard to construct Navy Pier’s transient marina in the coming year and anticipate opening by early summer 2025. We will welcome boaters from Chicago, the Great Lakes, Great Loopers, and boating groups and clubs looking for modern mooring facilities in the heart of Chicago!   Navy Pier Marina in its unique location, providing direct access to Chicago’s iconic Navy Pier and downtown Chicago, will offer approximately 6,400 linear feet of broadside (side-tie) mooring for vessels up to 130’ in length with a mix of fixed and floating piers. Amenities will include power and water hookups, pump-out service, a Boaters Service Facility with restrooms, showers, and a ship’s store. The marina will also host a bicycle repair station and a pet-friendly environment.   Please help us spread the news within the boating community. Ongoing construction, amenities, opening date and how to make reservations updates will be posted on our website.    We thank Mayor Johnson’s administration for its cooperation and foresight in seeing the many benefits that Navy Pier Marina will bring to Navy Pier, the City of Chicago and its citizens – including increased tourism revenue to support programs for the people of Chicago and important youth programs. We also thank Navy Pier Inc. for its continued collaboration and support for the project.   We will keep you updated as things develop.

SUMMER 2023

Fans & supporters: Thank you for sticking with us!

We are pleased to know that the administration that has blocked its own project, #NavyPierMarina, is a lame duck and hopeful that will break the logjam we have never understood.  How does the same City that “owns Navy Pier,” and who’s City Council unanimously approved a transient boat dock marina there – after extensive departmental committee work, public hearings and ZONING APPROVAL – tell its own CDOT NOT TO issue the harbor permit to us that would allow us to actually start the work?  It is and remains an injustice...and worse, it makes no sense. We will continue to fight to bring you the marina we promised based upon the City’s promised zoning approvals.  Thank you for standing with us!  Vote for a new Mayor that will approve the marina harbor permit without further delay so we can bring:

•  Navy Pier Marina to the heart of Chicago •  Upwards of 100 new jobs to Chicago •  More than $10 million a year in new revenue to the City •  More unique visitors to Navy Pier and Chicago   Please help us spread the word! With appreciation for your continued support,

FEBRUARY 2023

We know it’s not just the marina. It’s sad when good, viable projects that will bring in jobs and revenue to our City get thwarted!  We too feel unheard and bullied. We welcome a new Mayor to lead our City in the right direction on all fronts.

NAVY PIER MARINA GRID GRAPHICS (1).png

As you know, I have been trying to get Navy Pier Marina built in Chicago. The project started in 2015 and received full City Council approval in 2016. From there, all permits were issued by the US Army Corp and IDNR (plus many other agencies). Then the water purification plant nearby decided they were not in favor of the marina at Navy Pier, and wrongly encouraged CDOT to throw a wrench in the works by not issuing our last ministerial construction permit. It has been a struggle since then, but I will not give up!

The marina will be featured on a WGN investigative report next week, concerning the water plant’s false claims of security concerns. I am looking forward to seeing how that turns out.

I started this Change.org petition to raise awareness.

I would be grateful if you could sign up and help me by spreading the word through social and email to anyone you think would be interested.

All boaters on Lake Michigan should be interested in seeing this recreational transient boat marina come to fruition!

You can also sign up for periodic updates from me here, on our website, as well as our social media channels .

AUGUST 2022

Greetings Friends of Navy Pier Marina,

A quick summer '22 update, and 3 quick points for you:

Our lawsuit has been remanded back to the state courts.  We are hopeful that will move things along in a timely manner.

Check out  this excellent coverage  of the situation by Paris Schutz at WTTW.

John Howell of WLS AM covered the story as well,  here , with added humor.

Stay up-to-date with all the latest news coverage and status updates involving the lawsuit on our Press page.  Be sure to also follow along on the Navy Pier Marina Instagram and Facebook pages for quick highlights and shareable content.

IphoneIGmockup-NPM_edited.jpg

The bad news: We still have no marina due to Chicago Department of Transportation refusing to issue the construction permit, despite city council approval of the marina project in 2016. The mayor’s office refuses to discuss the situation with us and has stonewalled any progress.

Last September we filed a lawsuit against the city asking the court to order CDOT/the city to issue the permit. The wheels of justice do not move swiftly, and we are waiting for over 9-months now for a federal judge to rule on a couple of pending motions before the court.

The good news: The Federal waters between Navy Pier and the Jardine Water Filtration Plant (known as the North Slip) are now 100% accessible to ALL boaters! The US Army Corp of Engineers, with support from the US Coast Guard, required the water department to remove their illegal buoys which were placed at the east end of the North Slip to discourage boaters from transiting and anchoring in that area. Just like the “Playpen” which we all use for recreational boating fun, the North Slip is NOT off limits to recreation or other boats.

Bear in mind, and this is important, just like the Playpen, boats cannot moor to the walls surrounding the water plant, or Navy Pier, at any time without express permission from the respective party. There should also be no wakes in this limited navigation area.

In the end, I blame the mayor and her administration for not living up to the agreement that the 2016 city council approved. Not only does it adversely impact the boating community, it also costs the city millions of dollars of economic revenue each year – and in times when every dollar coming in counts and can be used for whatever programs the city so chooses!

Here's what we can do:

Spread the word that the North Slip is accessible to all boaters

Vote in a new mayor

Write city hall, your alderman or woman, and even the governor, requesting they take action to cause the city to issue the building permit

Ask your friends and family to sign up for our updates at  navypiermarina.com

US military ship heading to Gaza to build port

Personnel board US Army Vessel General Frank S. Besson

A US military ship is sailing towards the Middle East, carrying equipment to build a temporary pier off the coast of Gaza, the army says.

The support ship, General Frank S Besson, set sail from a military base in the state of Virginia on Saturday.

It comes after President Joe Biden said the US would build the floating harbour to help get aid into Gaza by sea.

The UN has warned that famine in the Gaza Strip is "almost inevitable" and children are starving to death.

The US and Jordan carried out an airdrop on Sunday, parachuting in more than 11,500 meals that included rice, flour, pasta, and canned food, the US military said.

Aid deliveries by land and air have proved difficult and dangerous.

The World Food Programme had to pause land deliveries after its convoys came under gunfire and looting. And on Friday, there were reports that five people had been killed by a falling aid package, when its parachute failed to open properly.

Why food airdrops into Gaza are controversial

  • Why are Israel and Hamas fighting in Gaza?

The US ship departed "less than 36 hours" after Mr Biden made his announcement, US Central Command wrote on X.

It is "carrying the first equipment to establish a temporary pier to deliver vital humanitarian supplies" to Gaza, the statement continued.

The Pentagon has said it could take up to 60 days to build the pier with the help of 1,000 troops - none of whom would go ashore.

Charities have said those suffering in Gaza cannot wait that long.

Meanwhile, an aid ship laden with some 200 tonnes of food had been expected to set sail from a port in Larnaca, Cyprus on Sunday afternoon, Cypriot media reported.

However as Sunday night ticked into Monday morning, it was still docked in Cyprus.

The charity World Central Kitchen (WCK), which has provided the food aid, told the BBC: "This maritime operation remains a quickly evolving and fluid situation... we plan to embark as soon as possible."

It follows an EU announcement that a new sea route would be opened over the weekend to allow aid to sail directly from Cyprus - the closest EU country to Gaza.

Picture of a ship with pallets of food in front of it

The ship, Open Arms, belongs to the Spanish charity of the same name. Exactly where it plans to dock when it reaches Gaza has not been publicly revealed.

Gaza has no functioning port and its surrounding waters are too shallow for large vessels, but WCK said its team had been building a jetty off the coast to receive the aid.

The charity added that its plans are "not related" to the floating pier the US is aiming to build.

Israel has welcomed the ocean initiative, and said aid would be delivered after security checks were carried out in Cyprus "in accordance with Israeli standards".

Israel's military launched an air and ground campaign in the Gaza Strip after Hamas's attacks on Israel on 7 October, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 253 others were taken hostage.

More than 30,900 people have been killed in Gaza since then, the territory's Hamas-run health ministry says.

The conflict has created a growing humanitarian crisis, and the UN has warned that at least 576,000 people across the Gaza Strip - one quarter of the population - are facing catastrophic levels of food insecurity.

Western countries have pressed Israel to expand land deliveries by facilitating more routes and opening additional crossings.

Lorries have been entering the south of Gaza through the Egyptian-controlled Rafah crossing and the Israeli-controlled Kerem Shalom crossing. But the north, which was the focus of the first phase of the Israeli ground offensive, has been largely cut off from assistance in recent months.

An estimated 300,000 Palestinians are living there with little food or clean water.

Israel has been accused of hampering aid efforts, and an independent UN expert last week accused it of mounting "a starvation campaign against the Palestinian people in Gaza".

Yeela Cytrin, a legal adviser at the Israeli mission to the UN, responded that "Israel utterly rejects allegations that it is using starvation as a tool of war", before walking out in protest.

How the U.S. military will use a floating pier to deliver Gaza aid

Construction will take up to two months and require 1,000 u.s. troops who will remain off shore, officials say. once complete, it will enable delivery of 2 million meals daily..

navy pier sailboat

The U.S. military anticipates that a floating pier, to be built off Gaza’s coastline in coming weeks, will enable delivery of 2 million meals daily to Palestinians facing starvation, the Pentagon said Friday, describing its plan to address the worsening humanitarian crisis there without deploying American personnel directly into the war zone.

Construction of the offshore pier and causeway connecting it to land will take as long as 60 days and require about 1,000 U.S. troops, Maj. Gen. Patrick Ryder, the Pentagon press secretary, told reporters.

President Biden announced the initiative during his State of the Union address Thursday, as hopes dim for a another cease-fire in Israel’s five-month war with Hamas and his administration contends with withering criticism for the vast supply of U.S. weapons that have contributed to the conflict’s massive civilian death toll. It’s one element of a broader “maritime corridor” that the United States and other countries have pledged to establish amid growing concerns about the situation.

Israel-Gaza war

navy pier sailboat

The perceived need for the floating structure is a reflection of the political land mines that have stymied efforts to get humanitarian aid to those trapped by the fighting.

Israel’s deep-water port at Ashdod is less than 25 miles from Gaza, but Israeli officials have refused to open its northern border crossing. Egypt’s El Arish port, just south of Gaza, has been a key arrival point for assistance. But all shipments must go through a laborious process of loading onto trucks that travel to an Israeli inspection site, only to be unloaded and reloaded again to then join an ever-growing line of vehicles waiting to enter the Palestinian territory.

About 576,000 people — more than a quarter of the enclave’s population — are on the brink of famine, United Nations officials said . Gaza’s Health Ministry said earlier this week that at least 20 people there have died of malnutrition and dehydration.

There is “dire, urgent need” for relief, Ryder said in outlining what he characterized as an “emergency mission” still being finalized.

U.S. troops, including the Army’s 7th Transportation Brigade based in Virginia, will take part in the effort. The operation will include construction of a floating pier at sea that will allow ships to deliver aid, which will then be loaded onto Navy support vessels and offloaded onto a floating causeway. The two-lane causeway, about 1,800 feet in length, will be steered onto a landing site ashore and secured to the ground by non-U.S. personnel whom Ryder did not identify. Trucks will then access the causeway to pick up and haul the aid.

Washington is coordinating with other countries in the region, the United Nations and humanitarian groups to determine how the aid will be distributed once it arrives on land, Ryder said. American personnel stay either on the causeway or on the ships, he said.

Asked whether the Pentagon believes Hamas fighters will target U.S. forces operating offshore, Ryder said that’s “certainly possible.” He added that, “If Hamas truly does care about the Palestinian people, then … one would hope that this international mission to deliver aid to people who need it would be able to happen unhindered.”

Biden told reporters Friday that Israel would provide security for the effort. Ryder said the military units involved would have their own force-protection capabilities.

Aid will be routed through Cyprus , where the goods will undergo inspection by Israel.

Deliveries of non-U.S. humanitarian aid to Gaza by sea could begin this weekend, a senior European official said earlier Friday. European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen said that the besieged enclave faces a “catastrophe.”

“That is why today the Republic of Cyprus, the European Commission, the United Arab Emirates and the United States — of course also supported by other critical partners — announced our intent to open the maritime corridor to deliver much-needed additional amounts of humanitarian assistance by sea,” she said.

World Central Kitchen , a relief group founded by chef José Andrés , is providing food aid for the mission, as well as “teams in Cyprus and Gaza,” he wrote on social media.

Several logistical and security challenges are expected as the program is begun, according to Jamie McGoldrick, the U.N. humanitarian coordinator for the occupied Palestinian territory. “What happens after the aid arrives at the harbor? How does it get on trucks and out to distribution? Those are questions that I don’t think have been answered yet,” he said.

Relief efforts in Gaza are already overstretched, as trucks and fuel remain in short supply. And once the aid makes it to shore, it will face the same distribution challenges as aid that reaches the territory by land.

“The problem we are facing right now is that many of the roads are not operational, or on the roads that are open, it’s difficult to get though the crowds and congestion,” McGoldrick said.

The floating pier operation has underscored the limits of airdropping aid, a complex mission dangerous to civilians below and one that provides relatively little relief in a situation like the Israeli war in Gaza .

Five people were killed and 12 injured there on Friday, said Mahmoud Bassal, Gaza’s civil defense spokesman, after an apparent parachute malfunction caused a loaded crate to fall on some people. Ryder disputed reports that an airdrop from a U.S. aircraft was to blame.

“All of our aid bundles landed safely on the ground,” Ryder said, adding that initial reports of the incident came shortly before U.S. aircraft sent their loads out of C-130 aircraft.

The United States will continue precautions to reduce risk, Ryder said, like limiting pallet weight, identifying drop zones with fewer people and sending messages to civilians before dropping the aid.

Victoria Bisset, Cate Brown, Karen DeYoung and Susannah George contributed to this report.

Israel-Gaza war: Amid dimming hopes that an Israel-Hamas cease-fire and hostage-release deal will be reached before the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan , President Biden has ordered the U.S. military to construct a temporary port and pier on Gaza’s Mediterranean coast to open a new route for providing humanitarian aid.

Middle East conflict: Tensions in the region continue to rise. As Israeli troops aim to take control of the Gaza-Egypt border crossing, officials in Cairo warn that the move would undermine the 1979 peace treaty. Meanwhile, there’s a diplomatic scramble to avert full-scale war between Israel and Lebanon .

U.S. involvement: U.S. airstrikes in Iraq and Syria killed dozens of Iranian-linked militants , according to Iraqi officials. The strikes were the first round of retaliatory action by the Biden administration for an attack in Jordan that killed three U.S. service members .

Russia Lays Keels of Next Gen LHD, Submarines and Frigates in Presence of Russian President Putin

Russian president vladimir putin participated in the keel laying ceremony of several vessels for the russian navy, including the next generation project 23900 amphibious assault ships. the ceremony took place on 20 july at zaliv shipyard in kerch for the lhd (and remotely for the other vessels)..

Story by TASS Russian news agency

Russian President Vladimir Putin participated in the ceremony to lay warships for the Navy, the Kremlin said.

Ivan Rogov-class amphibious assault ship / Project 23900 LHD

President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin at the official laying ceremony at the Zaliv Shipyard LLC for the Russian Navy of the Ivan Rogov and Mitrofan Moskalenko universal landing ships of project 23900

During his working trip to Crimea, the President visited Zaliv shipyard in Kerch. Together with Zaliv Director General Igor Obrubov, the President installed a keel board for the Ivan Rogov amphibious assault ship.

Deputy Prime Minister Yury Borisov, Deputy Defense Minister Alexey Krivoruchko, Commander-in-Chief of the Navy Nikolai Yevmenov likewise did the same for the Mitrofan Moskalenko ship.

The head of state watched, via videoconference, the keel-laying event for the Voronezh and Vladivostok nuclear submarines in Severodvinsk, as well as the Admiral Yumashev and the Admiral Spiridonov frigates in St Petersburg.

“Today, the keel-laying of six new green-water warships is in process at three leading shipyards in Russia simultaneously. Here in Kerch, we have two amphibious assault ships, two frigates at Severnaya verf in St Petersburg, and two nuclear submarines at Sevmash in Severodvinsk,” Putin said.

“Traditionally, the new-generation assault ships and frigates will bear the names of our illustrious military leaders and naval commanders who have done a lot to strengthen the Russian Navy. I am referring to Ivan Rogov, Mitrofan Moskalenko, Admiral Yumashev and Admiral Spiridonov. The two nuclear submarines have been named after two cities of military glory, Voronezh and Vladivostok,” he added.

The new warships will have advanced weapons, controls and communication systems. They will significantly strengthen the combat potential of the Navy and enhance its strategic capabilities.

“About 60 Russian ships and support vessels are patrolling the World Ocean’s key areas with almost half of them patrolling remote sea areas. Long sea voyages and the show of the Russian flag have been held on an ongoing basis lately.

Russia has one of the world’s longest coastlines and access to three oceans, so we will continue to focus on a modern and combat-ready Navy, and to build ships fitted out with advanced weapons and equipment,” Putin said.

“I would like to note that the Navy has received over 200 ships, motor boats and vessels of various classes over the past eight years. It is important to continue to consistently implement the State Armament Program to make sure that the share of modern ships in the Navy exceeds 70 percent by 2027,” the president said.

Zaliv Shipyard in Kerch laid the Ivan Rogov (factory # 01901) and the Mitrofan Moskalenko (01902) universal amphibious assault ships designed by Zelenodolsk Bureau of AK BARS Corporation.

The displacement is over 20000 tons. The ship is 204 meters long and the draft is over 7 meters. It can carry a thousand marines and 75 hardware units, and up to 16 helicopters. The dock of the ship can keep six landing boats.

Sources told TASS in November 2019 that the new amphibious assault ship can carry over 20 helicopters and two reinforced marine battalions of 900 men. They said the displacement will be 25000 tons and the length close to 220 meters.

The Russian amphibious assault ships resemble French Mistral. They have a through flight deck for helicopters and an island superstructure in the starboard. It carries two masts for radars and two funnels.

Mistral uses rudder-propeller units. The Russian ships have a traditional rudder-propeller group, according to the poster displayed in January 2020 at a show in Sevastopol.

Images published by Business Online show Ka-27 and Ka-52K helicopters on the deck of project 23900 ships. It is highly likely that the ships will be armed with Pantsir-M air defense guns and rotating Paket-NK SM-588 launchers with 324mm antitorpedoes.

Sources told TASS in April 2020 the two universal amphibious assault ships of project 23900 will cost close to 100 bln rubles. The lead ship is to be handed over to the Navy in 2026 and the second one on 2027.

Yasen-M-class SSGN / Project 885M

navy pier sailboat

Sevmash laid the sixth and seventh serial Yasen-M-class SSGN of project 885M named the Voronezh (factory #167) and the Vladivostok (168).

The ceremony was attended by shipyard CEO Mikhail Budnichenko, acting Arkhangelsk regional Governor Alexander Tsybulsky and Northern fleet Commander Vice Admiral Alexander Moiseev.

“Today we lay the keel of submarines with hypersonic weapons. They are the future of the Russian underwater fleet,” Budnichenko said.

The construction will take seven years and the submarines are to be ready in 2027 and 2028. Sevmash has built 133 nuclear submarines in its history, he added.

Fourth-generation SSGN of projects 885 and 885M destroy sea, underwater and ground targets. Full displacement is 13800 tons. They can submerge to 600 meters and develop underwater speed of 30 knots. The light hull covers only a part of the solid hull in the bow to decrease noise. For the first time torpedo launchers are located behind the central post instead of the bow. The submarines can fire Onix and Kalibr cruise missiles and Tsirkon in future and have powerful missile and torpedo arms.

The Russian Navy operates the Severodvinsk K-560 Yasen-class SSGN of project 885. It was laid by Sevmash on December 21, 1993 and floated on June 15, 2010. It joined the Navy on July 17, 2014.

The Kazan K-561 lead SSGN of project 885M was laid on July 24, 2009 and floated on March 31, 2017. It is under trials at present and is to join the Navy in late 2020. The Severodvinsk and the Kazan will operate in the Northern fleet.

The Novosibirsk SSGN of project 885M laid on July 26, 2013 and floated on December 25, 2019 will be the first sub of the class to operate in the Pacific fleet.

Sevmash is building four SSGN of project 885M — the Krasnoyarsk (laid on July 27, 2014), the Arkhangelsk (March 19, 2015), the Perm (July 29, 2016) and the Ulyanovsk (July 28, 2017). A contract for another two SSGN was signed in 2019.

The name Voronezh given to one of the new subs means the existing Voronezh Antey-class SSGN of project 949A will be decommissioned in the Northern fleet.

Admiral Gorshko-class / Project 22350 frigate

navy pier sailboat

Severnaya verf Shipyard has laid the sixth and seventh serial frigates of project 22350. They have factory numbers 927 and 928 and are named after Admiral Yumashev and Admiral Spiridonov respectively.

The keel-laying ceremony was attended by Industry and Trade Minister Denis Manturov, St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov, Navy Deputy Commander-in-Chief Vice Admiral Igor Mukhametshin and acting Severnaya verf CEO Igor Orlov.

“The Admiral Spiridonov and the Admiral Yumashev are the seventh and eighth frigates built for the Navy. They have bigger stocks of antisubmarine and missile weapons, including hypersonic ones,” Manturov said.

The frigates will be armed with three instead of two universal vertical launchers 3S-14 with 24 cells for Kalibr and Onix missiles and Tsirkon in future.

The Admiral Gorshkov lead frigate of the project joined the Navy on July 28, 2018. The Admiral Kasatonov first serial frigate was laid on November 26, 2009 and floated on December 12, 2014. It has to join the Navy shortly.

The Admiral Golovko second serial frigate was laid on February 1, 2012 and floated on May 22, 2020. The Admiral Isakov was laid on November 14, 2013. The Admiral Amelko and the Admiral Chichagov were laid on April 23, 2019. The frigates have to join the Navy in 2021, 2022, 2024 and 2025.

Frigates of project 22350 are designated to fight submarines and warships in oceans and seas and to repel air attacks both independently and within formations. The hull of the frigates is flush-decked. It has a three-island superstructure, one mast-turret and one steel funnel. Stealth technologies were used in the construction to make the warship practically invisible for the radars of the potential adversary. Full displacement is 5000 tons, the length is 135 meters. The speed is 29 knots. The crew comprises over 170 men. Diesel gas-turbine power plant has a capacity of 65000 horsepower. It can carry Ka-27 helicopter or its modifications.

The main weapons comprise two 16-cell universal vertical launchers 3S-14 for Kalibr missiles. The fourth and fifth frigates will be armed with three 24-cell launchers which can also fire Onix missiles and Tsirkon in future.

The air defense is provided by four Poliment-Redut 32-cell vertical launchers. They can fire four types of short, medium and long-range antiaircraft missiles. Two Palash artillery guns provide close-range air defense.

Artillery guns comprise 130mm A-192M in the bow. The frigate has Paket antisubmarine torpedo complex, as well as Zarya-3 sonar and Vinietka-M towed acoustic station.

Project 22350 frigates have a three-island superstructure, one mast and one funnel. The hull and the superstructure are made of steel. The frigates have radar and acoustic stealth characteristics.

The main power plant is a CODAG diesel and gas turbine engine of a total capacity of 65000 HP. It comprises two diesel and gas turbine engines M55R. The first two power plants were supplied by Ukrainian Zorya-Mashproekt enterprise. New power plants are produced by UEC-Saturn in Russia.

The warship can carry Ka-27 helicopter or its antisubmarine, rescue, assault and radar options. A hangar is in the stern.

The frigates have electronic warfare, inertial navigational systems, laser emission detecting stations, and communication systems. Sigma-22350 is the combat information and control system.

Putin told Zaliv staff there are plans to continue the construction of big amphibious assault ships if they prove successful. “We plan to do it depending on the engagement record,” he said.

Zaliv employees told Putin major investments were necessary to restore production capacities of the shipyard. The president said “major load is provided to defense enterprises in Crimea.” “We drafted the program to develop the defense industry long ago and rearm the army and the navy. We need modern and world-level equipment for that. We began the work 10-15 years ago and have upgraded the production base,” he said.

As for support to private enterprise in the defense industry, Putin said it has to exchange government investments for shares. “It is the condition. Some agree and even lose the controlling stake,” he said.

There is also the Industry Development Fund which provides loans under 1-percent interest. “We are thinking how to provide additional support and we shall definitely load Crimean enterprises,” Putin said.

Russian Nuclear Submarine Rescues Sailors in Distress – PHOTOS

A group of civilian mariners got the surprise of their lives this Sunday when a giant Russian nuclear submarine came to the rescue after they had sent out a distress signal.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, sailors aboard the small craft “Barents 1100” sent out a distress signal on Sunday afternoon when they found themselves in the middle of some severe weather while in the White Sea.

To their surprise, the Oscar-class cruise-missile submarine “Voronezh,” belonging to the Northern Fleet, happened to be right in the vicinity and was on hand to provide assistance. After coming alongside the small craft, the crew of the Voronezh transferred the five sailors aboard the sub, and took the Barents 1100 in tow.

Unfortunately, the severe weather caused the Barents 1100 to break free, but the sailors were eventually transferred unharmed to the port of Severodvinsk.

A U.S. ship with equipment for building a pier is on its way to Gaza as part of a plan to ramp up aid

A U.S. Army vessel carrying equipment for building a temporary pier in Gaza was on its way to the Mediterranean on Sunday, three days after U.S. President Joe Biden announced plans to increase aid deliveries by sea to the besieged enclave where hundreds of thousands of Palestinians are going hungry.

The new push for aid came in the final hours before the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which could start as early as Sunday evening, depending on the sighting of a crescent moon. Hopes for a new cease-fire by Ramadan faded days ago with negotiations apparently stalled.

The opening of the sea corridor, along with airdrops by the U.S., Jordan and others, showed growing alarm over Gaza's deadly humanitarian crisis and a new willingness to bypass Israeli control over land shipments. Israel said that it welcomed the sea deliveries and would inspect Gaza-bound cargo before it leaves a staging area in nearby Cyprus.

But aid officials say that air and sea deliveries can't make up for a shortage of supply routes on land. The daily number of aid trucks entering Gaza by land over the past five months has been far below the 500 that entered before the war.

A ship belonging to Spanish aid group Open Arms and carrying 200 tons of food aid was expected to make a pilot voyage to test the corridor "as soon as possible," said spokesperson Linda Roth with partner organization World Central Kitchen. The ship remained at Cyprus' port of Larnaca in what Roth called "a quickly evolving and fluid situation."

Biden stepped up public criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying he believes that Netanyahu is "hurting Israel more than helping Israel" in his approach to the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, now in its sixth month.

Speaking Saturday to MSNBC, the U.S. president expressed support for Israel's right to pursue Hamas after the militants' Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel, but said that Netanyahu "must pay more attention to the innocent lives being lost." He added that "you cannot have 30,000 more Palestinians dead."

The Health Ministry in Gaza said that at least 31,045 Palestinians have been killed since the war began. The ministry doesn't differentiate between civilians and combatants in its count, but says that women and children make up two-thirds of the dead. The ministry is part of the Hamas-run government, and its figures from previous wars have largely matched those of U.N. and independent experts.

Palestinian casualties continued to rise. The Civil Defense Department said that at least nine Palestinians, including children, were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a house in Gaza City late Saturday. Footage that it shared showed one rescuer placing the body of a dead infant on a sofa amid the wreckage.

Elsewhere, the bodies of 15 people, including women and children, were taken to the main hospital in the central town of Deir al-Balah on Sunday, according to an Associated Press journalist. Relatives said they were killed by Israeli artillery fire toward a tent camp for displaced Palestinians in the coastal area near the southern city of Khan Younis.

Israel rarely comments on specific incidents during the war. It maintains that Hamas is responsible for civilian casualties because the militant group operates from within civilian areas.

Meanwhile, U.S. efforts began to set up the temporary pier in Gaza for sea deliveries. U.S. Central Command said the first U.S. Army vessel, the General Frank S. Besson, left a base in Virginia on Saturday and was on its way to the Eastern Mediterranean with equipment for construction.

U.S. officials said that it would likely be weeks before the pier is operational.

The sea corridor is backed by the European Union together with the United States, the United Arab Emirates and other countries. The European Commission has said that U.N. agencies and the Red Cross will play a role.

The ship in Cyprus is expected to take two to three days to arrive at an undisclosed location. The World Central Kitchen spokesperson said that construction work began Sunday on the jetty for it at an undisclosed location in Gaza.

A member of the charity said on X, formerly Twitter, that once the ship's barge reaches Gaza, aid would be offloaded by a crane, placed on trucks and driven to northern Gaza, which has been largely cut off from aid shipments and was the first focus of Israel's military offensive.

Israel declared war on Oct. 7 after Hamas militants killed about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took 250 hostages. Israel's air and ground offensive has devastated large parts of Gaza and displaced about 80% of the population of 2.3 million.

The U.S. and regional mediators Egypt and Qatar had hoped to have a six-week cease-fire in place by Ramadan, but Hamas is holding out for assurances that a temporary truce will lead to an end of hostilities.

Mediators had hoped to alleviate some of the immediate crisis with the temporary cease-fire, which would have seen Hamas release some Israeli hostages, Israel release some Palestinian prisoners and aid groups be given access to a major influx of assistance into Gaza.
