Manukau Yacht and Motor Boat Club

Interested in sailing, or wanting to know more about cruising on the Manukau Harbour?

The Manukau Yacht & Motor Boat Club currently sails Hartley16 trailer sailors (seniors), and Optimists, (juniors) almost every weekend when the tide is right. The Club welcomes new members (with or without boats), and provides junior and intermediate sailing lessons in Optimists. While the Club's main fleet consists of Hartleys (TS16) and Optimists, all types of trailer sailers, sailing dinghies or multi-hulls are welcome. We sail socially, and compete throughout the year, with more than 30 race days (both seniors and juniors) planned, with only a small (non-sailing) break in September and early October. Anyone wanting to sail on the Manukau Harbour will find that the Club has great access to the water with 2 main ramps for trailer access, and a third one for smaller dinghies. There is ample parking for cars and trailers, and the waterfront offers lots of relaxing opportunities for the non-boaties in the family. Bring a picnic, play sport or go for a walk in Ambury Farm Park/ feed the animals.

What to do in Mangere

Māngere is a large suburb in South Auckland and is split into Māngere Bridge and Māngere East.

Massey Homestead Located along Massey road in the centre of Māngere East, Massey Homestead is a popular spot for weddings, birthday celebrations, weddings and other events. Surrounded by a lovely park with plenty of old and tall trees, there is plenty of shadow on sunny summer days. There is a dairy located on one side of the road and a supermarket around the corner, allowing you to buy everything you need for a family BBQ. More info on their Facebook page.

Walter Massey Park Walter Massey Park is conveniently located next to the Public library and supermarket in Māngere East. It features exercise equipments, a rugby field, a large playground and public toilets among other things. It can get busy on the weekend with locals making use of the facilities.

Māngere East Library One of Auckland’s many public libraries, the Māngere East Library is located in one of the public centres of Māngere East. Close to the supermarket, community hall and other amenities, there is plenty of public parking, making it easy accessible via Massey road. More info on their official website.

Mangere East Community Centre The Māngere East community centre can be found along Massey road in the centre of Māngere East. Together with the Massey Homestead, Walter Massey Park and public library next door, it is one of the main gathering areas in this vivid neighbourhood. Almost every weekend the centre is used for public or private events. More infos on their website.

Aorere Park Aorere Park is tiny park in Māngere East and one of the hundreds of similar sized small parks and reserves in and around Auckland.

Strawberry Farm One for the kids and families, the Strawberry Farm located on the outskirts of Māngere East is fantastic seasonal location for all strawberry fans. Not much to add, visit, take some cream with you, pick your strawberries and enjoy. More info can be found on their Facebook page.

Puketutu Island

The former scoria and basalt rock quarry is currently blocked for public access while it is being restored and turned into a reserve. Visitors are only allowed during the annual treatment plant open days, which take place in spring every year. Once the restoration project is completed in 2024-25 the Island also known as Known as Te Motu a Hiaroa to Mana Whenua, will be once again open for public.

Royal Auckland Golf Club

Mangere Centre Park

The Mangere Centre Park is large green field surrounded by and dotted with large old trees and located in the centre of Mangere. It tis a good spot for family picnics or weekend BBQs. As the home of the local sports association it is also a prime location for a game of cricket or rugby.

Watercare Coastal Walkway (Mangere Bridge)

One of the many walkways in the vicinity of Auckland city, the Watercare Coastal Walkway is located in Mangere Bridge, not far from Puketutu Island. As part of the Mangere Ihumatao foreshore the walkway runs along beaches and through wetlands full of native birds, with Mangere Mountain always close by. The walk can be started from either Ambury Farm Park or Otuataua Stonefields.

Mangere Mountain (Mangere Bridge)

Located in the centre of Mangere Bridge, Mangere Mountain has one of the best preserved volcanic crater cones in Auckland. The mountain is a great leisure time location, with hikers, mountain bikers and runners equally enjoying the track leading around the crater all the way up to the top edge. It is one of our favourite spots to watch the sunset with Auckland skyline in the background on one side and the ocean and Puketutu Island on the other.

Mangere Bridge Boat Ramp

Great spot for onshore fishing. Especially with incoming and outgoing tide. Make sure to be there on time to secure yourself a good spot. It is a popular place for inner city fishing.

Kiwi Esplanade (Mangere Bridge)

The Kiwi Esplanade leads along the Mangere Bridge waterfront, all the way to the start of the Ambury Regional Park. It is one of our favourite little weekend walks, which we usually start off with a nice breakfast or brunch at the Mangere Bridge town center.

Mangere Boating Club Playground (Mangere Bridge)

This play ground is halfway between the Start and End of the Kiwi Esplanade. Great for a weekend picnic with plenty of room for kids to play and public bathrooms on site.

Can conveniently combined with a walk along the Kiwi Esplanade and a visit to Mount Mangere followed by a brunch at Mangere Bridge towncenter. Gareth Insley is the commodore Manukau Yacht & Motorboat Club, that he as child also learnt to sail at. I as his wife is nominating him, as it is small sailing club that it gives so much. The racing calendar runs summer and winter dates and includes Yachting NZ learn to sail program, to volunteer & to train juniors in holiday programs at MYMBC in Mangere Bridge. The racing calendar includes hosting all surrounding yacht clubs to compete in Manukau harbour in one of calendar dates. Gareth is also president of NZ Hartley 16 trailer sailor Association that has two regattas at Manukau yacht & Motorboat club that brings competitors to the Mangere Bridge community that utilise accommodation & cafes/bakeries. The Hartley 16 class competes also in Napier, New Plymouth, Lake Ngaroto, Lake Rotoiti. The behind scenes management of MYMBC to keep it operating which includes him as Bar Manager of Club for events. He regularly is communicating to wider community via @ www.facebook.com... & @ m.facebook.com... plus membership emails. He is welcoming face to yacht club, and successfully brought home the North Island championship trophy. He has trained additional as coach at Onehunga Mangere Football club for two seasons, this taking two training evening and Saturday football game all winter season, which this 2019 he was selected by Auckland Football Federation, as a candidate of coach of year. He is super kind!

In Moscow, Team Monaco Defeats Israelis

The 10th Slava Memorial Cup was held at the Moscow City Golf Club from Feb. 17 to 19.

The tournament is named in memory of Slava Grinuk, a promising Russian player who died at the age of 28 in 1999. There were two events: Top 8 and Top 40.

The 32-board final of the Top 8 teams was between four young Israelis: Eldad Ginossar, Ron Pachtman, Ilan Herbst and Yaniv Zack, and Team Monaco: Pierre Zimmermann, Franck Multon, Fulvio Fantoni, Claudio Nunes, Geir Helgemo and Tor Helness, all world champions.

The match started well for Team Monaco, the diagramed deal being the first board.

At the other table Zack (South) and Herbst (North) had an uncontested auction: one club, one diamond, one spade, one no-trump, two no-trump, pass.

Zimmermann (East) led his club five. If declarer had won with dummy’s (South’s) king and played a diamond to his nine, he would have made his contract, but he understandably played low from the dummy. Now, though, Multon (West) won with his queen and shifted to the heart six. When East won with his ace and returned the suit, the defenders took the first six tricks.

In the given auction the one-heart overcall by Pachtman (West) was debatable with a hand full of “quacks”: queens and jacks. One spade by Nunes (North) was a transfer, showing a normal one-no-trump response. The double by Fantoni (South) was for takeout.

Against three no-trump West led the heart queen. However, given the two-heart raise by Ginossar (East), a low-heart start was surely better and would have been much more successful.

East won with his ace and returned the heart five (the higher of two remaining cards), which West ducked to dummy’s seven to retain communication with his partner.

South played a club to his ace, followed by a diamond to dummy’s nine. When that held, declarer led a club to his ace, cashed dummy’s three diamond winners and exited with a heart.

West took three tricks in the suit, but then at Trick 12 had to lead a spade into South’s ace-queen.

Fantoni was disappointed to see that East had the spade king but was happy to have won nine tricks: two spades, one heart, four diamonds and two clubs.

Plus 50 and plus 400 gave Team Monaco 10 international match points en route to victory by 96 imps to 52.

The Top 40 pairs was won by two more Israeli juniors, Lotan Fisher and Ron Schwartz. They finished 71 victory points ahead of Yury Andreev and Sergey Kozlov from Russia. Third, another 2 victory points back, were Larisa Panina and Michael Rosenblum, also from Russia.
