26° Captains' Forum

26th Captains’ Forum, man versus machine

Minimal White Logo

On Thursday 29 September 2022, from 9 a.m. to 12.30 p.m., the 26th edition of the Captains’ Forum, reserved for superyacht skippers, will take place at the Yacht Club de Monaco. The event is being organized by the Captains’ Club, which brings together 150 professionals with a Master 500 GT licence.

Man vs Machine: Captains’ Forum themes

Focus of the Captain’s Forum 2022 is the relationship between man and machine , with an unusual point of view: in fact, it starts in space and arrives on the sea. The man-machine relationship is a timeless topic, a conflict that is always evolving but which on this occasion is revisited as an opportunity to build and develop the yacht of the future.

The theme of the 26th edition has been developed in collaboration with insurance advisor Jutheau Husson, Dutch super yacht builder Oceanco and Spanish boat refit specialist Gruppo MB92.

Captains' Forum Scott E. Parazynski,

He is also a writer of best-sellers (The Sky Below) and a businessman: he founded Fluidity Technologies, a technology innovation company focused on redefining movement through three-dimensional space, for which he now serves as CEO. He is also often requested as a speaker at meetings dedicated to innovation, risk management, mentorship and leadership in extreme adversity. In 2009, he was the first astronaut to climb Everest, the world’s highest peak.

Space and sea in comparison

Scott E. Parazynski will give his view on the human aspect, drawing parallels between the professions of astronaut and captain, between shuttle and yacht, between space and sea: how do astronauts prepare, what level of commitment is required for their mission, how can superyacht professionals be supported to help them aim high and dream of an industry enormously improved by technology?

Discussing with the former astronaut at the 26th Captains’ Forum will be Captains Barry Sadler, instructor at La Belle Classe Academy, Craig Coker M/Y Skyfall (58m) and Luca Triggiani M/Y Roe (74m) who will give their views on training, ensuring an effective management and leadership method to improve the human approach to the industry in the future.

The machine, driver for the future

Man’s dependence on machines is increasingly evident, but their interaction is becoming easier and more intuitive. It is in this area that superyacht skippers are contributing to the design and construction of the yachts of the near future, because they are in the best position to understand and point out how technology can characterize super yachts, enhancing their appeal and image.

Leading the discussions on these topics will be Armelle Roudaut-Lafon, Director of Maritime Affairs of the Principality of Monaco; Snorre Halvorsen, Senior Executive Advisor of Norwegian Hull Club Risk, Norway; Matteo Morra, Area Sales Manager of Wärtsilä, Italy; and skippers Luca Mosca (M/Y Quantum Blue 104m) and Pierre Makdessi (M/Y Najiba 58m).

Superyachts: the global superyacht fleet numbers at the Captains’ Forum

super yacht captains forum

Boat sizes increase while the market shows stable outlooks till 2022.

A constantly growing fleet, their ships’ size ever-increasing, and a trend that not only shows a market upswing but growth signals and stability . This data is the starting point to understand what challenges and opportunities refit and aftersales companies are going to face in the future.

This was the main subject discussed at The Superyacht Captains’ Forum , held during YARE (Yachting Aftersales and Refit Experience) , the international meetup now at its ninth edition, completely dedicated to the yachting industry and organized at the “Il Principino” convention center in Viareggio till Saturday 23 March.

Over 350 guests were attending and were given a complete summary of what’s happening in the refit world. On stage, renowned personality in the nautical world Martin H. Redmayne , The Superyacht media group journalist and editor.

Vincenzo Poerio , YARE and Tuscany’s nautical, technology and port district president started the Forum with his speech, where he highlighted some important key points of the sector: “New buildings contracts have been signed till 2022 and the boats all have a bigger length” . He also confirmed that “ in the international theatre our Italian shipyards are the protagonists”. Sure enough, according to the rankings, eight of the best worldwide shipbuilders are Italian ( Benetti, Sanlorenzo, Custom Line, Azimut, Overmarine, Baglietto, Perini Navi and Codecasa ).

Looking at the data of the last ten years, exposed this morning at the Forum, the main numbers are about the global fleet’s exponential growth. From 3906 crafts in 2009 to 5646 in 2019 and 5789 are expected for 2022. About the length of those crafts, the increasing size of the commissions is evident: in 2009 there were 2626 (30 – 40 mt), 1055 (40 – 60 mt), 183 (60 – 90 mt), 42 (over 90 mt); in 2019 there are 3.553 (30 – 40 mt), 1.649 (40 – 60 mt), 355 (60 – 90 mt), 89 (over 90).

According to Redmayne’s forecast, this trend will keep its run until 2022 when there will be 387 yachts between 60 and 90 meters and even 97 in the over 90 class.

Other than the data on the existing global fleet, which of course needs constant and extraordinary maintenance, Redmayne called for “ the need of a new approach by shipyards, companies and most importantly from owners (both private and commercial) when it comes to refit operations ”. Business opportunities are still there since in 2019, from an international point of view, there are 847 yachts under five-years refitting plans and 1430 which need three years long operations. In this sector, where the offer from all the 190 shipyards in the world is sky-high, Italy stands among the first five countries for number of commissions.

In such a competitive environment, according to Poerio, “the Mediterranean must come back with a central and determined role. How? Widening the offer, quality, and choice through a nautical luxury tourism strategy which today doesn’t have a clear and defined personality.” Poerio’s idea is a cluster which brings together the main countries of the Mediterranean who operate in the refit sector with Italy, Spain, and France leading the group, something that will develop new targeted services in ports and relative cities where specific tourism is identified.

YARE will continue tomorrow – Friday 22 March – with B2C – Meet the Captain . A very appreciated format by both captains and companies thanks to an innovative app which carefully matches refitting needs and offers. This all-business day will end with the Captains’ Night , a captains only recreational and relaxing moment offered by NCA Refit Shipyard in their new NCA Village in Marina di Carrara.

Next Saturday 23 March , grand closing of the event, sports will be under the spotlight. The captains will be guested by Versilia Golf Resort in Pietrasanta for a thorough golf session for both beginners and veterans. Following that, a drink before the parting and best wishes for the next year’s edition.

YARE is organized and promoted by NAVIGO , innovation and development for the nautical sector and with the support of   Distretto Tecnologico della Nautica e della Portualità Toscana .

YARE is sponsored by Lürssen, Boero, Jotun, Felice Maritime Consulting and Yacht Management, Italia Super Yacht, Porto Mirabello and Orbis Yacht, NCA Refit, Lusben and Fincantieri

New to Yachting

  • Mar 27, 2023

The 27th Captains' Forum , organized by the Captains' Club at the Monaco Yacht Club , brought together yacht captains and industry professionals to discuss the future of yachting under the theme Superyacht Commitment: Management, Leadership & Mentoring. The event highlighted the importance of teamwork, communication and training of yacht crew on board and we are very proud that our industry-leading President, Laurence Lewis , participated as one of the panellists.

The discussion was opened and moderated by Paul Rose, a British TV presenter, explorer and environmentalist with a strong background in diving and underwater exploration. He emphasised the necessity of good working conditions and effective management for the success and safety of both crew and guests.

Yacht crew with common goal and values

Recruitment was one of the main topics discussed at the event, with Chief Stew Nicola Watton suggesting that a clear vision and a set of yacht values should be established from the recruitment stage itself. "It's important to find crew that are on board with those values, as well as having a mission statement we can all get behind. " she said.

Marianne Danissen , Director of Yacht Management at Camper & Nicholson , stressed the importance of making crew members feel comfortable and valued, advocating for more training opportunities to foster knowledge-sharing and collaboration, stating that "nobody is a natural leader; you have to learn how to be a leader. " She emphasized the importance of a core foundation and values in recruitment, encouraging crew to try swapping positions for a day to get a better understanding of each other's jobs.

Captain Mike Gregory discussed the importance of understanding each crew member's values and behaviors to ensure they fit within the culture of the yacht. He pointed out that investing in crew training has an immense impact on crew satisfaction and longevity and is more cost-effective in the long run compared to the expenses associated with frequent crew replacements.

Captain Peter Fielding shared his experience of encouraging crew members to take take part in the progress and the program of the yacht. "We ask for their opinions and we also have suggestion boxes. You really need to get everybody invested in the progress and the program you are doing. " he said.

Hiring diverse crew leads to increased efficiency

The panelists also discussed the benefits of having crew members with diverse backgrounds and experiences, with Captain Christophe Guégan of M/Y Mimtee stating that having crew members with diverse backgrounds leads to a more efficient crew: "Generally, people start in this industry in their twenties, without much experience, but it's also very good to have profiles with a solid professional career behind them. Everyone comes with their own skills which help develop the crew. It's all a question of balance. "

Laurence Lewis , President of YPI CREW , the leading yacht crew recruitment agency, emphasized the importance of attracting a new generation to the yachting industry and how the role of leadership has been rising significantly. "We are all here to build united high performing team that will give the owners of these yachts an amazing luxury experience and so more than ever we need to attract the new generation." she said.

The panelists urged the need to listen to crew members and address any arising issues, with Life after Yachting consultant Titta Vaisanen highlighting the importance of monitoring crew mental health.

The value of each individual crew member is crucial to collective success. Captain Greg Foster James of M/Y Symphony noted that captains must create the best environment possible for their teams to thrive.

Captain Chris Andreason highlighted the importance of consistency in retaining crew members: "Every time someone leaves, training starts all over again. Turnover is not irrelevant. "

The Captains' Forum underscored the importance of training and professional development for crew retention. The event served as a platform for industry leaders to share their insights and experiences, highlighting the crucial role of training centers like Yacht Club de Monaco's La Belle Classe Academy in shaping the future of superyachting.

The unspoken rules about how to behave on a superyacht

  • The superyachting world is very small, with only 5,800 yachts longer than 30 meters at sea.
  • That insularity has bred a specific etiquette, which is often hard for outsiders to know about.
  • These are the de facto rules of the most expensive billionaire toys, superyachts .

Insider Today

For the owners of superyachts , privacy is often the most valuable thing money can buy. It's one reason centimillionaires and billionaires pay eight or nine figures for a palace at sea, far from the prying eyes of land dwellers.

Even the most gossipy crew members should stay tight-lipped about the name of a former owner or charter guest, and many brokers shy away from answering benign questions.

That means that, aside from basic safety guidelines, most of the rules of superyachting are unwritten. The very few who need to know them — there are only about 5,800 yachts longer than 30 meters at sea, according to SuperYacht Times — already know them.

But if you do happen to be a lucky guest at a party on a billionaire's $500 million ship or find yourself included in a $1 million-a-week vacation, there are a few things you need to know.

After four days of touring superyachts that sell for as much as $75 million and chatting with the people who buy, sell, and work on them at the Palm Beach International Boat Show , Business Insider gleaned a few key edicts. Given the discreet nature of the industry, almost all the people we spoke with requested anonymity to protect their working relationships, but here's what they had to say.

Take off your shoes

While it's a basic rule for anyone in boating, it may come as a surprise to an outsider that no matter how rich you are or how expensive your heels are, in the vast majority of cases, you can't wear shoes on board.

It's partly for safety — you don't want anyone slipping on a wet deck — but partly to keep the yacht clean. So expect to see barefoot billionaires, and if you forgot to get a pedicure, bring a set of special boat shoes.

Don't make any assumptions about money — but know the signs

In the superyacht world, it's safe to assume almost everyone you meet is very, very rich, and many brokers and builders say you can't judge a book by its cover when it comes to prospective clients.

"It has nothing to do with how they're dressed," one broker told BI. "It's the biggest mistake you can make because a complete slobby-looking guy or couple could be a multibillionaire."

There are, however, a few clues. Watches are one; new footwear is another.

"Rich people always have new shoes," a superyacht expert said. But because of the shoe rule mentioned above, this tip probably applies only when they're on land.

Book your massage early

Wellness areas, including spa rooms with a massage bed or two and a professional-grade facial machine, are becoming must-haves on superyachts . Most have a customized spa menu and a crew member who doubles as a trained masseuse or beautician — and they're usually in high demand.

One captain said he'd implemented a booking system to ensure people weren't fighting for the same spots. A broker said sometimes masseuses would be so busy they wouldn't leave the small spa cabin for hours on end.

Related stories

So if you want to make the most of your relaxing time on board, reserve your pampering slot as soon as you get your welcome cocktail.

Pirates are more real than you'd think, and many superyachts have hidden safe rooms

While you might dress up as a fake pirate for an onboard theme party, there are very real ones — and other dangers — on the high seas.

In certain areas, including parts of the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden, pirates are a cause of concern . In the Red Sea, owners are concerned about the Houthis .

Superyachts can come equipped with sonic weaponry, lockdown systems, and anti-drone protection. Builders are even designing safe rooms — which are apparently just as plush as the rest of the ship.

The longer the boat, the closer to $1 billion

While you can't judge a buyer based on appearances, you can judge them on the length of their boat.

One rule of thumb: If someone has a brand-new 50-meter vessel, chances are they have $1 billion to their name. If it's over 100 meters, expect the owner to have at least $2 billion. And for a boat bigger than that — like Jeff Bezos' 127-meter megayacht Koru — it takes many, many billions.

Money can't buy you everything

The world's biggest, most expensive yachts are custom-built by shipyards that produce only a handful of boats a year.

But no matter how many tens of millions of dollars clients are spending, there are things to which builders will refuse to say yes.

"In the end, the boat has our name," an executive from one of the world's biggest shipyards told BI.

They recalled a client who requested a yellow hull to match his Lamborghini . The shipyard declined, steering the client in another direction.

"If I don't like it, I don't build it. I finalize two or three contracts a year," another builder said. "If somebody can say your vessel is ugly, my reputation is bad."

Yacht crews are trained to make the impossible possible. A guest requests fresh caviar flown into the middle of the Caribbean? No problem. Fresh flowers every day while at sea? It'll cost you, but it can be done.

But they can't time travel, and captains and crew members say the thing that causes the most friction is when a client or owner wants to go from point A to point B — right now.

"The hardest request is when they want the boat in a place — yesterday," one captain said.

The best person to know? A friend with a superyacht

Superyachts are expensive to build and expensive to maintain . According to the industry standard, owning a superyacht will cost 10% of its new-build price annually. For a $100 million yacht, that's at least $10 million yearly going to crew, regular maintenance, insurance, fuel, and dockage.

Chartering, too, is costly . Beyond the list price, which can be hundreds of thousands a week, guests must pay for provisions, which are pegged at 35% of the charter fee, and are expected to tip between 10% and 20%.

So the most important unspoken rule of superyachting is actually that the only thing better than owning a superyacht is knowing someone else who does — and invites you along, of course.

Hello everyone,

I'm planning on visiting Rostov over this following summer. However, knowing a current not stable situation around the world. Is it okay to visit city which located really close to border of Ukraine? Have anyone visited Rostov-on-Don in the past 12 month? Or any city which is close to the Ukraine border? I am a US citizen. Just trying to see if it will cause any issues when I will be flying back from Moscow after visiting Rostov.

Please, I'm asking you politely don't involve any hatred or political topics. (For people who against traveling)

Thank you in advance.

I would say that as long as there are no official US regulations forbidding visits to Russia and spelling out any potential impact of such a trip, then no.

However, and it is something we had here in Switzerland, the sheer visit, maybe in connection with the current situation, could land you on whatever list of whatever government agency.

I wouldn't go if the former were to apply. If only the latter, I don't really care.

Rostov in summer is great, Don river views, fish, Cossack heritage... Russian premier League plays there, why you should expect issues? Happy travels!

Steven - So that I understand you question better, why do you think visiting Rostov would cause issues and with whom? I have not been been to Rostov. Only to Moscow, and there are no problems that I am aware of, other than my western credit cards not working here.

Also, a few related explosions, sabotage actions and attacks have occurred in the city, and especially its oblast/region.

The city and region are moreover included in the martial law decree from October 2022, that is, the martial law 'light' version, allowing local authorities a bigger range of actions.

Thank you for the replies guys!

Vasily, no doubt it's out-standing over the summer. That's the reason why I planning to take a train and stay in Rostov for 3-4 days.

Thank you Matt for your reply as well. I was able to create tinkoff card, so the money is not really the issue here. I was wondering more because of being very close to border of Ukraine. I haven't found any online restrictions though, tourist's seems to be traveling around Russia often. But since I'm US Citizen, I'm not really suppose to be really close to that border line. It was personal concern to avoid misunderstanding from border control if they'll notice me buying ticket there.

Chances are that won't be able to fly so train is really the only option.

Being so close to the border I'd have concerns

Have you read your government’s travel advisory for Russia and in particular the area you seek to travel to?

Did you read & understand post #4?

Steven - I can't speak for the rest of Russia. I only have been to Moscow, but I did not experience any suspicion or hostility towards me. Enjoy your trip!

Colonel Andra Rostov better known as the Red Barbarian ascended to the rank of general in a Communist satellite country. He controlled a large spy network. After a group of his spies reported (and were beaten for) the failure to steal the plans for a weapon from Stark Industries , the Red Barbarian was confronted by another communist agent, the Actor . The Actor revealed his skill in disguise and impersonation, and the Barbarian sent him to replace Stark himself, to gain the plans.

The Actor did succeed in doing so, even learning Iron Man 's secret identity, but Iron Man stole the plans back and met with the Red Barbarian himself, posing as the Actor. Iron Man told him the briefcase was booby-trapped and couldn't be opened for another four hours, and then left, returning to the USA. The real Actor returned to the Red Barbarian, hoping his news of Iron Man's real identity would allow him to be forgiven for failing to gain the plans to the weapon. However, the Red Barbarian saw that the Actor didn't have the plans, and the Actor said nothing about the time locked briefcase. The Red Barbarian refused to believe the Actor and had him shot as a traitor. [1]

Winter Soldier [ ]

Colonel Andre Rostov was missing in action for many years, until he was revived. He worked as the warden at the gulag Bucky Barnes is serving time in for killing two Russian citizens many years back. [2]

Below Deck Season 11's Captain Kerry Reveals If He'll Ever Return To Below Deck Adventure

  • Captain Kerry Titheradge is currently busy in Below Deck season 11 but would love to continue on Below Deck Adventure.
  • Kerry's leadership style and hands-on approach to handling issues on board the yacht have been praised.
  • Kerry has proven to be very capable as the new Below Deck captain and has effectively handled crew and guest situations on board.

Below Deck star Captain Kerry Titheradge reacted to a fan's question about his future on Below Deck Adventure . Below Deck launched in 2013, with Captain Lee Rosbach at the helm of a yacht named Honor . Bravo created four spin-offs over the years, including Below Deck Mediterranean , Below Deck Sailing Yacht , Below Deck Down Under and Below Deck Adventure . The latter spin-off introduced Kerry as the newest captain. After Captain Lee left after 10 years , Kerry took over his role during Below Deck season 11 .

Captain Kerry is a "little busy" on Below Deck right now, but he would love to return to Below Deck Adventure .

There's only been one season of Below Deck Adventure so far. With Kerry moving over to the original Below Deck , there's been speculation over who will helm the spin-off if Below Deck Adventure season 2 is renewed, and Kerry finally gave a bit of insight into what the future might hold for him .

Twitter user @SophrosyneVibes asked Captain Kerry if he'll star on both Below Deck and Below Deck Adventure going forward. Kerry responded to the fan by noting he's " a little busy " with the original Below Deck series at the moment. However, if he's given the opportunity, he would love to return to Below Deck Adventure because he wants to " continue the ADVENCHAA!! "

Captain Kerry's Below Deck Leadership Explained

Kerry titheradge has been the perfect below deck season 11 captain.

The social media user replied to say that they are really enjoying Kerry on Below Deck because he's fantastic as a captain and takes a hands-on approach to dealing with issues on board the yacht. Kerry then reacted with the folded hands emoji to indicate his appreciation of the compliment. The Below Deck star is great at responding to fans on social media. After the most recent episode of Below Deck season 11 saw a charter guest request a bell, @PortPalsPodcast sent Kerry a screenshot of a wireless doorbell, and Kerry responded that he'll " get right on that ," with a winking face emoji.

There were big shoes to fill when Captain Lee left Below Deck . Fortunately, Bravo chose to bring Kerry over from Below Deck Adventure . He's proven extremely capable of leading the crew and handling various issues as they come up. In a recent Below Deck episode, he did the right thing by firing Jared Woodin. In the same episode, he was faced with stew Cat Baugh going through a mental health crisis. He handled the situation perfectly and worked diligently to get Cat home as fast as possible. Kerry's leadership style is very much needed on Below Deck .

20 Best Reality TV Shows Right Now

Each Below Deck captain has their own style they bring to the yacht. Captain Lee was grumpy and a curmudgeon, but he still commanded respect in a very admirable way; he was a great captain to have when Below Deck launched. Kerry, on the other hand, is far more approachable in the way he interacts with his crew without losing their respect or having them question his leadership. It would be great if he could star on both Below Deck and Below Deck Adventure , but if that doesn't happen, then at least he's on one show instead of none at all.

Below Deck airs Mondays at 9 p.m. EDT on Bravo.

Authorities seek to seize assets of super yacht captain linked to alleged $20 million cocaine haul

A man in sunglasses stands before a large boat on a sunny day

Authorities are seeking to seize any alleged proceeds of crime from a super yacht tour operator linked to a deadly $20 million cocaine haul in Newcastle.

Key points:

  • 62-year-old James 'Jimmy' Blee is facing drug importation offences
  • Mr Blee is the only person charged over a deadly drug haul in Newcastle
  • A diver died in the drug smuggling incident and two others are being sought by police

James 'Jimmy' Blee is the only person so far charged in relation to the alleged transnational drug shipment in May.

His Cairns-based super yacht company boasts luxury tours and an "intimate understanding of the Australian coastline".

Police discovered the Newcastle drug shipment after the body of Brazilian diver Bruno Borges, 31, was found floating in the Port of Newcastle.

They allege Mr Borges was left for dead when the mission failed and Mr Blee and another diver fled.

A young man, shirtless and tattooed, wearing dark sunglasses and smiling as he stands with his back to the ocean.

Fifty kilograms of cocaine were found near Mr Borges' body and police said an additional 50kg made it into the community, but some remnants were found.

Mr Blee was arrested in May while trying to board a plane from Cairns to Singapore, and faces criminal charges of importing more than 100 kilograms of a border-controlled drug.

He is also facing proceedings in the NSW Supreme Court, with the state's Crime Commission making a "proceeds of crime" application.

The NSW Crime Commission can sue people in the Supreme Court to identify assets and recover proceeds of crime, and does not require a criminal conviction.

The application, if successful, would remove any proceeds of crime from being available to him or any associates.

The application will be heard in the Supreme Court on September 19.

Mr Blee, who is currently in custody, is due to appear in connection to his criminal charges in the Downing Centre Local Court in Sydney on October 5.

An  Interpol alert is current for a second alleged diver, Brazilian Jhoni Fernández Da Silva, 32.

Security footage of a fit-looking man in his 30s with a shaved head walking down a street carrying luggage.

An unknown woman is also being sought and police have released CCTV vision of both her and Mr Da Silva.
