Mackinac Island Yacht Club

History The Mackinac Island Yacht Club was founded in 1937 with the acquisition of the former George Sweeney home by the original club members. the first Commodore of the Club was J. E. Buker. Members own the clubhouse and lease the land on which the clubhouse stands from the Mackinac Island State Park Commission. Although the club grew steadily throughout the 1940s and 1950s, the house itself fell into disrepair. W. F. "Bill" Doyle, elected Commodore in 1955, undertook a project of restoring the house and adding a burgee room on the east side of the original building. In 1985 the club enlarged that room into the present dining room and added two additional sleeping rooms to the second floor.

Mackinac Island hotel rooms already selling out for one special week in July 2024

Hotels on historic Mackinac Island are already filling up for an especially big week next July.

Why? The countdown has begun for the 2024 Port Huron to Mackinac 100th anniversary sailboat race.

At 202 pre-registrations, more race boats have signed up for next year than raced a month ago, according to Bayview Yacht Club . Organizers are expecting up to 250 entries.

They're coming from North Carolina, Ohio, Florida, New York, Minnesota, Illinois, Texas, Wisconsin and Arkansas. Plenty of sailors from Ontario, Canada, are registered, too.

This is one of two back-to-back races to Mackinac Island; Chicago to Mackinac on July 13 and Port Huron to Mackinac on July 20. The races can last days. And the experiences are the stuff of movie scripts .

When sailors get to the island, it's a long-lasting party. Non-sailors are actually warned prior to visiting the island during race weeks that the celebration is, well, significant. Eating, drinking, dancing and grooving night after night at Horn's and the Pink Pony.

Hotel rooms are often booked Sunday through Tuesday during Mackinac, as family members wait on the island to cheer arrivals, which happen anytime from Sunday through Tuesday. With racers crossing the finish line at all hours, day and night, cocktail hour never seems to end.

Sailors from around the country see old friends and familiar faces . People from all over Michigan run into high school classmates. The event ends with an awards party on the lawn at Mission Point with the Endless Summer band. The ferries fill up as the island empties of sailors by Wednesday after the race. Many boaters sail their vessels home while others carpool.

Apart from sailing, Mackinac is beloved for its horse-and-buggy taxis, and bicycling around an island filled with historic hotels and restaurants. No motor vehicles are allowed on the island.

Some crews celebrate victory, other racers celebrate the goal of just crossing the finish line.

"There is already so much buzz out there for next year's big anniversary," Tim Hygh, executive director of the Mackinac Island Tourism Bureau, told the Detroit Free Press. "Any event that can last 100 years shows just how significant and important it is. We look forward to welcoming all sailors back next year for the big celebration."

He surveyed hotels to learn who is booked, who has room and who might make room on Mackinac Island during Bayview Mackinac race week:

Organizers behind the scenes

Mike Helm, 2024 Bayview Yacht Club commodore, will oversee the centennial event that attracts professional sailors and amateurs. Many racers try their whole lives to make the podium.

The 2024 Honorary Race Committee consists of these Michigan natives with longtime ties to Bayview, according to the club on the Detroit River:

Stuart Argo Jr. , has been part of seven America's Cup campaigns including winning the America’s Cup XXVIII in 1992, aboard America3.  He won the 1988 Canada’s Cup aboard Challenge 88 and competed in several other Canada’s Cup campaigns. Argo has 65 combined Bayview and Chicago Mackinac races.

David and Peter Askew won the World Sailing Team of the Year after winning the Caribbean 600 in 2019;  and by being the first American boat in more than 30 years to win the Rolex Fastnet Race on their Volvo 70 Wizard , winning the race overall. (It starts near the Isle of Wight on the south coast of England, crosses the Celtic Sea, rounds Fastnet Rock off the coast of Ireland and finishes at Cherbourg, France.) That same year, they also won the 3,000-mile Transatlantic Race and Pineapple Cup from Miami to Montego Bay, and in 2018 won the Sydney to Hobart Race.  Other offshore wins for the Askew brothers include the Transpac and Newport Bermuda Race.

Bruce Burton served as commodore of Bayview Yacht Club in 2010 and went on to serve as U.S. Sailing president and the U.S. Olympic sailing chair. He is a back-to-back world champion in the Etchells class.

Bora Gulari, the 2009 Rolex Yachtsman of the Year, has won championships in various classes, including the International Moth (two-time world champion); Melges 24, and he represented the U.S. in the 2016 Summer Olympics. He often sails on the PAC 52 Natalie J owned by Phil and Sharon O'Niel.

Bill Martin has served as president of U.S. Sailing, the U.S. Olympic Committee and as athletic director at the University of Michigan. He was inducted into the US Sailing Hall of Fame in 2017.

Dawn Riley sailed as part of the first all-female crew in both the Whitbread Round the World Race and America's Cup. Now she is executive director of New York-based Oakcliff Sailing , a national training organization. She is the youngest and first female to become a ‘dual famer’ at the National Sailing and America’s Cup Halls of Fame.

Shepler's Ferry to Mackinac Island postpones plan to add fee, RFID luggage tracking

mackinac island yacht club rooms

Shepler's Ferry service to Mackinac Island, which has been exploring the idea of implementing luggage fees for visitors, confirmed this week that the plan is on hold.

Chris Shepler told the Detroit Free Press late Monday that after extensive discussion of the controversial idea with the Mackinac Island Transportation Authority, local elected officials and island hotels, there will be no such fees this year. The cost would have been $4 per bag for visitors and no charge for island residents.

"The idea has been scuttled for the 2024 season" that runs from April to October, said Shepler, president of the company in operation and grandson of its founder who began service in the 1940s.

The bag fees would pay for technology used to tag and track luggage loaded on and off the ferry boats, which serve an estimated 650,000 passengers annually. The newest ferry, launched in 2020, cost $5 million and carries 210 passengers. Shepler's employs an estimated 200 workers in the summer.

At issue, Shepler said, is that the ferry company for years has spent hours tracking luggage for customers who get frustrated about its location. Luggage is loaded onto the ferry, then unloaded, put onto a courier bicycle or horse-drawn carriage , sent to a hotel and then to a room where the guest is registered, Shepler told the Free Press.

Luggage fees would help offset the costs of radio frequency tracking devices, known as RFID technology, which reads information contained in wireless devices without making physical contact or requiring a line of sight, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security website .

Currently, island visitors get little slips of paper that match their luggage and pray everything goes according to plan. As Mackinac Island continues to see increased tourism, challenges grow, Shepler said.

"We want to always try and increase our service to visitors on Mackinac Island, whatever that is," he told the Free Press. "We take that very seriously."

On Monday, Shepler's posted on its Facebook page the latest status of its plans: "Shepler's Ferry has decided to postpone the launch of our luggage tracking system, originally scheduled for April 2024. We are also postponing our new luggage fee schedule. So it's 'business as usual' in 2024. Thank you for your understanding and continued support."

The post had 393 likes by Tuesday morning, 58 shares and 77 comments. Responses ranged from criticism about corporate greed and a desire to travel with competitor Star Line ferry to feedback from a passenger who said she lost a bag and contents worth at least $500 last season while visiting the island.

"We spend 40 to 50 hours a week looking for misplaced bags," Shepler told the Free Press. "Sometimes those bags are merely on the next vessel, but we don't know that, and the concern of the guest comes from having to catch a flight or wanting to get home. So the first phone call goes to St. Ignace, the second call goes to the hotel, the third call goes to Star Line. We’re making 30 phone calls off that one trip."

Being able to track luggage would save Shepler's and their patrons time and help eliminate any angst, Shepler said.

Jason Wiley, Shepler's director of operations, told the Free Press that the company has invested more than half a million dollars in the new technology.

The Mackinac City Council had scheduled a public hearing for late March.

The Mackinac Town Crier newspaper ran the headline recently, "New ferry luggage fees spur backlash." It said Mayor Margaret Doud and Mackinac Island City Council officials opposed the fee plan and would consider its regulatory authority allowed by city charter. The Free Press left messages for the mayor and city council seeking comment.

Council Member Brian Bailey, general manager of the Chippewa Hotel on Main Street, told the Free Press on Tuesday, “We are very happy to hear Shepler’s Ferry has decided not to move forward with their proposed baggage charge as we on City Council felt it is an unnecessary and unsubstantiated fee to our guests of the Island.”

A ferry boat service is a franchise and must pay franchise fees. The city charter grants the city the power to authorize, license and regulate ferries to and from the city and to regulate and prescribe, from time to time, charges and prices for the transportation of persons and property.

The charter says : "No ferry boat company shall make any unjust or unreasonable discrimination in rates, charges ... however, this shall not be deemed to prohibit the establishment of a graded scale of charges and classification of rates to which any customer or passenger coming within such classification shall be entitled."

Island leaders have talked privately and publicly about their concern related to luggage fee costs. Last month, the City Council passed a resolution from Council Member Anneke Myers calling the luggage fee unjustified, saying a $4 fee per bag would impose a "financial burden" on visitors and impose an 11% cost increase on a $36 round trip ferry ticket.

In addition, implementing the proposed fees, "in their current form," would jeopardize the financial stability of lodging facilities, according to a letter signed by the Mackinac Island Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Mackinac Island Tourism Bureau.

Early Tuesday, Tim Hygh, executive director of the Mackinac Island Tourism Bureau, told the Free Press that Shepler's luggage fee postponement "is great news and the timing couldn't be better as we put the final touches on what promises to be another incredible season."

Michigan State Police praise tech tracking system

Meanwhile, Matt Helmkamp, strategic intelligence unit manager at the Michigan Intelligence Operations Center of the Michigan State Police, wrote a letter in support of the luggage tracking system after being consulted by Shepler's.

"Characterized by its ability to monitor luggage in real-time, this system ensures a secure, transparent, and efficient travel experience for passengers and plays a vital role in safety and security," Helmkamp wrote in the letter provided by Shepler's to city officials and hotels, and obtained by the Free Press.

"The role of the Intelligence Operations Center involves thorough assessment of critical infrastructure and proactive measures to ensure the safety of all Michigan residents. This includes identifying vulnerabilities, coordinating with relevant agencies for robust security, and continuously monitoring threats to mitigate risks efficiently," he said. "The adoption of this technology is not merely an enhancement of security measures; it revolutionizes the way luggage is managed and monitored throughout its journey. By providing real-time data on each piece of luggage, the system substantially reduces the risks associated with lost or tampered items and acts as a robust deterrent against potential security breaches."

Data captured by the RFID system can help police if needed, providing detailed logs of luggage movement, Helmkamp said in the letter. "The implementation of this RFID luggage tracking system aligns Shepler’s Ferry with national best practices in transportation security, setting a standard for safety and operational excellence."

Shepler's Ferry has not permanently abandoned the idea of a tracking system, Shepler told the Free Press early Tuesday. "We think the system is the right way to go. We brought it up to the island hotels back in September. I thought we were out in front of it. We're going to continue to work with city officials and hotels to evaluate how this system can be used in the future."

Florida billionaire continues investing in Michigan businesses

Shepler's sold in 2022 to a self-made billionaire from Naples, Florida, who learned his work ethic making early morning deliveries door-to-door with his milkman father in tiny Washington, Missouri.

While David Hoffmann didn't make the highest offer of 40 potential buyers, he runs the multibillion-dollar Hoffmann Family of Companies with his wife, Jerri, and sons Geoff and Greg, and that appealed to the Shepler family.

The Hoffmann family has a presence in 27 different countries, including Europe, China, Latin America and South America, Hoffmann told the Free Press at the time of the purchase. He is the biggest real estate owner in Naples, Florida, Hoffmann confirmed. His family has renovated downtown Naples, Winnetka, Illinois, on the north shore of Chicago, and Avon, Colorado, the base of Beaver Creek Ski Mountain, Hoffmann said. And their  vineyard investment in Augusta, Missouri, has generated attention .

Last year, the Hoffmann Family of Companies purchased Maurer Publishing, LLC, publisher of the Mackinac Island Town Crier and the St. Ignace News, and a printing shop in northern Michigan, according to the April 3 edition St. Ignace News . All editors, writers and employees remained amid plans to keep the print products and expand into digital operations.

Mackinac Island is gearing up (and hotel rooms are selling out ) for the 100th consecutive Bayview Mackinac Race in July, from Port Huron to the island. A record number of sailboats, exceeding 316, have already registered, according to a Bayview Yacht Club spokesman.

Nightlife City Guide

Moscow nightlife beautiful girls

Moscow: nightlife and clubs

Moscow nightlife: despite the freezing weather, the Russian capital gets hot as the sun goes down. Between discos, luxury, exaggerated parties and beautiful Russian girls, the Moscow nightlife offers everything you need for memorable nights.

Moscow nightlife

The city of Moscow is definitely one of the most interesting European cities: the stories about underground lines and secret bunkers, the architecture of its buildings, from the Kremlin to St. Basil's Cathedral, up to the Soviet style of the Seven Sisters and modern skyscrapers, make the Russian capital is a unique and fascinating city.

Moscow nightlife by night

One of the many things that Moscow is famous for is its wild nightlife . Moscow never sleeps. If there is anything true about Russians, it is that they love to party! Despite its freezing weather, Moscow turns out to be a hot city with endless fun, hip nightclubs, extreme luxury, beautiful Russian girls and lots of booze when night falls!

Moscow Russian girls nightlife

In fact, in recent years, the Russian capital has definitively abandoned the gray period of communism and its inhabitants have given vent to their desire for fun. As you might expect in a city of over 12 million people, Moscow has an amazing array of nightlife options and a huge choice for all tastes, whether you are a jazz fan, hardcore clubbers or just plain old alcoholics. The nightlife in Moscow winds through a multitude of alternative and transgressive nightclubs where the watchword is to meet new people and spend a night of unbridled and uninhibited fun . In addition to the numerous discos, in the Russian capital there are also 20 casinos open until dawn. For those who want a break of intriguing relaxation, in the city of Moscow there are also numerous massage salons .

Moscow nightlife

Most of Moscow's nightclubs contain a restaurant, a bar area and a nightclub (the larger ones also have bowling alleys, billiards and a casino!). Perhaps because Moscow is such a large metropolis with very cold temperatures and taxis are so expensive that the owners of the bars and clubs want to offer their customers an all in one place for night entertainment.

So, in other words, Moscow is not the best city in the world for bar-crawling, especially bearing in mind that these multipurpose venues often charge entrance, but rather it is better to carefully choose the club where to spend the night.

For a quieter and more sober evening, head for an evening stroll along the Via Arbat or the Red Square to be fascinated by the lights of the city and the grandeur of the buildings, and admire the shops and street artists. An alternative to experience Moscow's nightlife is to spend an evening of lyric, ballet or opera. The Russian capital is home to around sixty theaters, the most famous of which is the world-renowned Bolshoi Theater (Theater Square, 1, Moscow).

Moscow nightlife Bolshoi Theater

Moscow nightlife districts

Moscow's nightlife is not concentrated in a single district but is scattered throughout the city. However, there are areas with a greater concentration of bars and nightclubs .

The Krasnij Oktjabr (Russian for "Red October") complex, a red brick building located on the island in the center of the Moscow River that once housed a chocolate factory, is dotted with numerous trendy nightclubs and offers spectacular views of the river and the symbolic places of the Russian capital. This is where the most glamorous parties in Moscow take place, there are numerous bars, restaurants and art galleries.

Nightlife Moscow Red October Krasnij Oktjabr

Other neighborhoods with good nightlife are the old manufactory area near the Russian government building which houses some bars, the area around the Trubnaya metro and around Kuznetsky Most , while the Kurskaya groups the clubs with electronic music. We can also mention the area of the Patriarch's ponds, an area that is teeming with quiet bars.

Clubs and discos in Moscow

fb_icon_tiny

The crowd is very mixed. Students, young professionals, techno lovers, tourists all gather at Propaganda. Everyone comes to enjoy the music and have fun. It is one of the few clubs where the dancefloor dominates and there are hardly any tables, apart from a few that overlook the entire space. Propaganda is a restaurant until midnight. You can come earlier for dinner and stay for dancing. After midnight, the staff clears the tables from the dance floor and the whole place turns into a club. The place is different from the usual Moscow restaurant / club hybrids, however, because the atmosphere changes completely from "relaxed restaurant" to "underground electro club". Not to be missed.

Moscow Nightlife Propaganda

There are more areas with different music. In the first area, expect a mix of traditional music and Russian pop songs. In the second, slightly larger area, there is live Russian pop music until 2am. After that it is mostly some kind of electronic music. The club is frequented by beautiful Russian girls around 18-25 years old, stunning students or models, and of course there is a good deal of young Russians, middle-aged men and foreign tourists trying their luck! Unlike many other nightclubs, the Icon is a pure nightclub and not a club turned into a restaurant. In any case, if you like to party in a big club and want to savor the typical Moscow nightlife , this is the perfect solution.

Moscow Icon Club nightlife

The crowd is the same as in other high-end Moscow clubs. Men are rarely under the age of 35 and are committed to giving the impression that money is not an issue. The women are amazing even by Moscow nightlife - if you want to meet Moscow's super models, this is the place! Ideal if you want to toast with the Moscow elite.

Moscow Siberia nightlife

The club is located on two floors. The lower floor is mainly frequented by people hanging out at the bar and is good for conversation. The narrow stairs that perfectly fit the student atmosphere of the club take you to the main floor where the real party takes place, complete with a bedlam and girls dancing on the bar counter. In the summer months there is also an outdoor terrace. The place is always crowded and bouncers unnecessarily queue people - having a table or someone inside can be the key to skipping the queue. Otherwise, you might end up waiting half an hour or more. Come early or come back late if you want to avoid the crowds.

Moscow nightlife Rolling Stone Bar

The crowd that frequents this club is quite mixed. People are less trendy and more underground. The place is suitable for afterhours, so most people arrive from 3am onwards.

Moscow Gazgolder nightlife

Immediately upon entering, you will have the feeling that you have come to the local high school graduation prom instead of a real Moscow nightclub. There is no real interior design, but basically just a large hall with a stage and a bar. The crowd is almost entirely made up of teenagers and young people. Not many of the teens speak English, but it probably doesn't matter after all the alcohol. The music ranges from Russian pop and hip-hop to the most famous international hits. Perfect if you want to party and drink alcohol in one of the cheapest clubs in Moscow .

Moscow Tipsy nightlife

Here too, it's full of beautiful girls and it's also a great place to hit them off, as those who come here are notoriously more approachable. The advice is to be very firm with the girls who approach and to make your intentions clear. If you want to be 100% sure to get in, come at 2am when the club is still uncrowded.

Moscow nightlife Miks Afterparty

Oblaka plays a mix of Russian and international pop music. Occasionally, as in many other clubs, there are performances by Russian pop singers. As is often the case in these types of clubs, the music and DJ are not the best but the guests don't seem to care.

Moscow Oblaka nightlife

Moscow's bars and pubs

The bar looks similar but still distinctly different than regular Moscow posh clubs. Most of the people who frequent this place are over 25, and you can find everything from young professionals to creative types to self-proclaimed models. Great if you want to see the "real Muscovites" celebrate without the overblown flashes of wealth. The proposed music is a strange mix of old and new commercial songs and Russian pop.

Moscow nightlife Bar Klava

Downstairs is a large open space that opens its doors wide in the summer. The interior is rustic, yet elegant, with wooden furnishings and plenty of seating. The interior combined with Ugolek's popularity creates a crowded yet intimate atmosphere, especially on weekends. People come to chat, drink and eat. The upstairs bar has a more welcoming atmosphere. It is smaller, with soft lighting and armchairs to be able to relax. On weekends there is a DJ who mixes electronic music and transforms the bar into a relaxed place, ideal for the pre-party.
