Historical:

karenita yacht

Formerly owned by actor Errol Flynn as ‘Sirocco’, she hosted many famous names in the heyday of Hollywood, and more recently has been the flagship of the fashion clothing company ‘Blanc Bleu’.

Flynn and his buddies indulged in so many antics that they earned the reputation of being the most notorious, hard-drinking “hell-raisers” on the island. Nearly every weekend the men would race their yachts to Catalina – Flynn on his Sirocco, Weissmuller on his Allure, and Bogart aboard his Santana. All three would bet on the outcome.

One particular race between them has reached legendary status. Weissmuller won and promptly boarded Flynn’s yacht to collect his winnings. According to an account related by Johnny Weissmuller Jr., Flynn was “drunk and belligerent,” and responded to his loss by aiming a small cannon mounted on the bow of his yacht at Weissmuller’s boat. As he lit the fuse, he removed a cigar from his mouth and announced: “I’ll sink you, you sumbitch!” Weissmuller rushed to the cannon and kicked the barrel upward, launching the cannonball straight up into the sky. The men watched helplessly as the projectile plunged vertically and tore through the yacht’s upper deck, missing the two by only a few feet. After a few seconds, Flynn “burst into uproarious laughter.”

BARBARA ANNE TUCKERMAN – June 30, 2021

Who owned SIROCCO around 1972/73 ? I sailed on her (briefly) – in the South Pacific off Australia – Black Jack Mutton was a friend of owner –
The boat had been ‘restored’ in NZ I think Can’t imagine I’ll hear but hope to be lucky.
Many thanks.

Judy Colling – November 14, 2021

I was part of a crew that chartered Sirroco in 1965 and sailed to Tahiti. We spent Christmas in Tahiti and New year in Bora Bora. Sirroco was owned by a guy named Jack Belcher. Tony Carter captained the yatch. We where gone 5 months. What a blast. I was 19.

‘Errol Flynn the Seafarer’

The seafarers’ festival presents a special focus on.

The annual Seafarers’ Festival will celebrate the swashbuckling career of Errol Flynn in a jammed packed day on Sunday 27 October at the Bellerive Boardwalk.

Errol Flynn is much loved by Tasmanians for his work on the silver screen but he is not often recognised for his achievements as a seafarer. In his youth Errol Flynn was an avid sea goer with his father Theodore and in his early adult life he sailed to New Guinea aboard his beautiful yacht  Sirocco . There he managed a tobacco plantation and a copper mine amongst other things before forging his career as an actor of wide renown.

The  Sirocco,  which has hosted many famous names in the heyday of Hollywood and has been a regular sight at top Mediterranean venues for decades, will be a centrepiece at this year’s Seafarers’ Festival. To read more about the Sirocco click  here .

Supporting the glittering Hollywood theme, MC Ryk Goddard will bring all the elements of stage and water activities together with the panache of a Hollywood movie star. The cast from Big Monkey will present extracts from their performance of Robin Hood, there will be roving crusty pirates, and the University of Tasmania Fencing Society will present swashbuckling demonstrations.

There’s also a new water-sideshow-alley with the popular ‘dunk the pirate’, Fishcare fishing, ‘Fling a Fish’ and for the first time you can walk on water inside a fabulous water ball.

With over 40 stalls around the site you’ll find maritime and historic information intermingles with fine food stalls, a Moo Brew bar and a great stage program of music, dance and theatre.  The Bellerive Yacht Club will hold a Bosuns Locker Sale and the promenade will be buzzing with a range of fine arts and craft stalls.

This year the popular Betta Milk Raft Challenge will be judged by special guests and Frank and Nikki and there will be great opportunities for Festival goers to get out on the water aboard the Lady Nelson or the Huon Paddle Boats.

A full program will be available at the Clarence City Council website soon so please check www.cc… .au/seafarers for more information over coming days!

WHAT:            Seafarers’ Festival

WHEN:           Sunday 27 October from 10.30am to 4pm

WHO:         The glamorous Ryk Goddard

The alluring Big Monkey theatre troupe

                      The daring Frank and Nikki

                      The simply stunning Sirocco

Errol and his Yachts!

We all know that Errol had the two Siroccos of which the later Sirocco is really the 'Karenita' who is alive and well and the Zaca, but apparently so I heard, that he had a big range of boats, anything from 30' up. There was for instance the 'BARBARY' a 16 ton ketch and here are pictures of her – a nice little Beauty – and then read all about her in the link below!

It looks like most of his boat stood for something good, either before him or after him and for a good and famous cause! His choices of boats were great ones as he was!  And more important, they are still cruising on his beloved oceans and he is on them having a hell of a time!

Your and my job is now is to find the other boats Errol owned in his life, there supposed to be about 20 of them, large and small, so we have our job cut out and for something worthwhile and meaningful as we try to trace his life!

www.goseeaustralia.com…

Please keep searching and add them to his collection on this Blog! It would be great if all our Blog members would participate!  I know we have Master Sleuths amongst us!  I would love to hear from all of you and after this task I have a wonderful prize for you it will tickle you pink! Have fun! Tina

Errol's Yachts

She sails again!  Errol's “SIROCCO” under her original name “Karenita” is for sale!

This beautiful sailing yacht is of impeccable pedigree, and with a fascinating history. A proven race winner, she is perhaps not the ideal cruising yacht, having superb but limited accommodation, but any future owner can rest assured that he has one of the worlds' top classic yachts. Formerly owned by the actor Errol Flynn as 'Sirocco', she hosted many famous names in the heyday of Hollywood, and more recently has been the flagship of the fashion clothing company 'Blanc Bleu'. A regular sight at St Tropez, and other top Mediterranean venues, she is now looking for a new owner that will continue to look after her in a similar manner.

Brokerage Price: 1,550,000 EUR

Any buyers? Here is the link if you wish to make an offer? Give a little giggle! Very nice interior pictures to be seen  www.classicyachtforsale.com…

Here is a photo of the Sirocco taken in the late 1970s in the Grenadines.

A little History:

After being built under the signature of John Alden, American specialist, the 75' classic wooden ketch was launched in 1929 as “Karenita”, sold and became “Aviner” in 1930, “Simoon” in 1933, “Watchette II” in 1934 and named again “Karenita” in 1936.

Errol bought her in 1938 and renamed her Sirocco, after the first Sirocco.   He should have named her Sirocco II, but he did not.   Mariners actually do not believe in renaming boats, they feel it brings bad luck!

st1:*{behavior:url(#ieooui) }

She was restored by Bill Coffman and renamed to her former 1929 name “Karenita”, she was and remains an emblematic sailing boat off the Gulf of Saint-Tropez and she frequently takes part in regattas of ships in her category.

The “Beam Ends” Sirocco or Errol's first “Sirocco” in 1929.  There are several stories how Errol acquired the Sirocco, one says – his mother purchased her, one says – his father purchased her and Errol says, he won her in a card game!  I like to believe he won her in a card game – it is so much like Errol. What ever the story of acquisition –  here is a picture of the Sirocco, which he sailed to New Guinea through the Great Barrier Reef in 1930.
