Royal St. George Yacht Club

The Royal St. George was founded in 1846, or, rather, it would be more correct to say that the Royal Kingstown Yacht Club was formed in that year, and afterwards changed its name to that by which we know it to-day. Before the date referred to there was a Royal Irish Yacht Club in Dublin, formed in 1838, which must not, however, be confused with the existing club of that name. It was upon the dissolution of that organization that the Kingstown club was formed, so that the St. George may be said to have descended from the original Royal Irish, and to have had an almost continuous history from 1838.

Its quarters are situated at Kingstown, inside the harbour. To see anything of the big-class racing from the club-house it is necessary to ascend to the top of the building, but those who wish to follow it closely usually betake themselves to the end of the outer arm of the breakwater, the fort at the end of which is used by the officers of the day. The harbour entrance forms the starting and finishing line. The club-houses of the St. George and Irish are almost adjoining, and the two clubs work in perfect harmony, and give their annual regattas alternately. It is the custom amongst Irish clubs, and an excellent one, to make the annual regatta the occasion of a big social function, and the Royal St. George is no exception to the rule. As some compensation for not being able to obtain an uninterrupted view of the big vessels from the club precincts, there is always a series of aquatic sports provided for the amusement of visitors, immediately in front of the club, which is always crowded on these occasions.

Sailing champions to be decided in unique events that can produce an outright winner for the year

Autumn season brings a conclusion to the main sailing season where dozens of championship events have been decided for 2023.

In a quirk of an already quirky sport in Ireland, overall champions will be decided in the coming weeks for junior and senior classes in unique events that roughly produce an outright winner for the year.

Both the junior and senior classes draw their champions from all coasts of Ireland plus inland waterways but Wicklow is possibly emerging as a front-runner for wins in both events.

As usual, the younger sailors will compete in Schull, west Cork using the locally built dedicated fleet of TR 3.6 team racing dinghies over two days this weekend.

While the Royal St George Yacht Club (RSGYC) will have four sailors competing, several other clubs have two sailors competing, notably Blessington Sailing Club.

This Wicklow venue was the original place where Rio 2016 Olympian Finn Lynch first started sailing as the closest place to Carlow. Though he now declares for the National Yacht Club in Dún Laoghaire, he is never shy about acknowledging his roots there.

Lynch has been nominated to the senior event that will be sailed at Foynes Sailing Club next month.

At the Limerick venue, Lynch will face off triple Olympian Ger Owens, the defending champion from 2022 when he added his name for the third time to the famous silver salver, a feat only previously accomplished by a handful of people.

While many of the sailing household names on the trophy appear twice, Mark Lyttle and Tom Fitzpatrick are the others to appear three times with Nicholas O’Leary the only person to achieve a hat-trick of consecutive wins.

Owens, meanwhile, has changed his long-term allegiance from the RSGYC in Dún Laoghaire to Wicklow Sailing Club and on paper at least, the outcome of a battle between these two front-runners could link the garden county to overall victory.

Except that another quirk of this event comes into play as each year the senior event switches to a different host class.

This year’s event will be sailed in the historic Dublin Bay Mermaid class, a 91-year-old John B Kearney design that races with a crew of three.

Much will come down to boat-handling so Jim Carthy of Rush Sailing Club, the host nomination for the event will surely have an added edge.

Other surprise finalists could be drawn from the team-racing champions in the 18-strong list of finalists such as Trinity’s Helen O’Beirne who won the Colours team racing event or Baltimore Sailing Club’s Johnny Durcan who captained the winning University team racing championship.

ILCA7 national champion Jamie McMahon will be competing raising the prospect of Lynch facing an up-and-coming contender and possible rival in a boat with which neither of them will be familiar.

Meanwhile, this weekend’s junior champions cup can look forward to breezy conditions in the sheltered waters of Schull Harbour.

ESTABLISHED IN 1838

The Kingstown Boat Club, from which the Royal St. George Yacht Club evolved, was founded in 1838 by a small group of boating enthusiasts who had decided that ‘the (River) Liffey was every year becoming fouler and less agreeable for aquatic pursuits’.

One of these was the Marquis Conyngham, who used his influence with Queen Victoria to have the privileges of a Royal Yacht Club conferred in 1845. The Club flag was to be “the Red Ensign with a crown in the centre of the Jack” and the Burgee was red with a white cross with a crown at the centre. This, of course, is the St. George’s Cross, and is quite possibly the reason why, in 1847, the Club became The Royal St. George’s Yacht Club, although this has never been established. It subsequently became the Royal St George Yacht Club; it is referred to by all who know it, as simply ‘the George’.

The new clubhouse was the first custom-built clubhouse in the ancient seaport of Dun Laoghaire (or Kingstown, as it was known from 1821 to 1920).

THE CLUBHOUSE

The clubhouse was designed by Mulvany, a follower of Gandon, designer of the Custom House in Dublin, and he produced a beautiful miniature Palladian villa in the neo-classical style.

The builder was Masterson, who built many other beautiful houses in the neighbourhood, including Sorrento Terrace, Dalkey. Work was completed in 1843, but, incredibly, such was the growth in membership, that the clubhouse was already too small. Permission was granted by the Harbour Commissioners in 1845 for an extension of the original façade, which involved clever duplication of the existing Ionic portico with the erection of a linking colonnade between. The symmetry and classical grace of the clubhouse was thus preserved in the new building.

The George has a long tradition of racing and cruising, and members have, from the start, made their mark in home and international waters. In 1851, the Marquis Conyngham, Commodore, competed in his 218 ton yacht “Constance” in the Royal Yacht Squadron Regatta. An American yacht called “America” won the race! In 1893 William Jameson, of the eponymous distilling family, was asked by Edward, Prince of Wales, to be sailing master on his new yacht “Britannia”. He won 33 out of 43 starts in her first season.

In 1963 a major restoration project was undertaken to repair and update the Club’s facilities, and this attracted a large number of new members who were ultimately to pave the way for the later developments, including a much-envied multi-purpose club room, a state-of-the-art forecourt extension for dinghies and keelboats, and a fully-equipped dock.

2008 saw the culmination of five years of planning and building when the new sailing wing was opened for use. Consisting of a new junior room, racing office, committee room and administration office this area is joined to the older building with a lovely light-filled atrium. Stylish and functional changing facilities for the ladies and upgraded male changerooms have increased the club’s capacity to accommodate larger numbers of sailors for world-class events. A refurbishment of the Clubroom further complimented this full-service sailing section and has elevated the Club’s status resulting in it being chosen to host the 2012 ISAF Youth World Championships, Laser Masters Worlds, 2016, Laser Youth Worlds 2020 and  Dun Laoghaire Regatta 2023 (combined classes of 400 boats).
